A Sequel to this
@kivrin For you, as you asked about Rosalind in the circumstances that Sam can see and, up to a point, communicate with ghosts
1947
It was a collision of unfortunate circumstances that led to her being invited further than the hallway of Mr Foyle's house. Chosen for undercover work - by means of being the only WPC on Hastings books, she'd gone up to Steep Lane for final approval of her appearance. And enroute the rain had come, attacking her brolly-less self. She didn't have an umbrella smart enough to go with these clothes, just an everyday one
Mr Foyle opened the door, took what could only be a half-look at her and stepped back
"Inside, now. "
Sam was not about to disobey him, and fairly lept into the hall, the safe dryness of the hall. Mr Foyle strode through another doorway, and the slight sweep of his arm indicated she was to follow. She trotted after him, through a smart lounge that blended into a smaller room with a table in the centre and then hurrah hurrah through another doorway a door into a smaller and wonderfully warm kitchen.
"You- m should dry off alright if you stay next to the oven there." Mr Foyle volunteered, and she tucked herself near the white square, and felt the waves of warmth soak into her.
She was being watched. It wasn't Mr Foyle, he'd busied himself back at the sideboard, a bit further along this wall, cutting something.
At the other end of the table diagonally across from her, not one but two figures stand, looking at her. One, shirtsleeves and unbuttoned jacket, the easy smile she'd just seen a flsh of last time they'd met - Andrew Foyle, DCS Foyle's son, killed in the war. The other, a woman of nearly the same height, wearing some sort of smock thing with odd splotches on it. Oh someone could have made terrible ideas out of that, but there’s a similarity in the shape of the face, the eyes which clues her im. Andrew raises his hand, starts to visually beat out the Morse on a raised arm. M-O-T-H-E-R. R-O-S-E
“Why didn’t they give you an umbrella, Stewart?” Mr Foyle asks. She quickly looks along to where  he moves something from board to bowl. “Or take one yourself?”
“Mine’s not good enough for this Sir, it would show me up like a sore thumb. And I don’t think they thought it would rain until later.”
“Mmm” Mr Foyle responds in his usual taciturn way. The colour of the little painting, hung, of all incongruous places above the cooker.
“That’s very pretty Sir, the painting, is it yours?” She asks, even though she’s pretty sure she knows the answer.
He stops and looks up at it, and his face seems both more pained and more alive as he does so. “No, my wife painted them.”
A painter’s smock, with paint on it, then. She glances over, and the woman nods once. But almost all the ghost’s, Rose’s, attention is on her Husband, watching him with both great love and sadness on her face.

[fanfic] I Will Be Your Wings:  Chapter 6
Yubel folded their wings as they came to rest on one of the perches close to the palace. They studied it for a few moments, chewing on one finger.
I shouldn’t go back. I really shouldn’t. They knew that. They’d always known that. They could even see guards flittering here and there, and a few taking ground routes, Flighted and Flightless both. The king and queen did their very best to protect their home. Yubel couldn’t blame them.
But that protection made it so difficult to get in there when all they wanted to do was meet him again. To see those warm eyes turned toward them again, to speak with him. To find out if what they’d thought about him was true.
As much as Yubel knew that they shouldn’t, that didn’t mean that they didn’t want to, or that they didn’t come by here every few days, fighting all reason with the burning desire to just flit in and search him out.
They rested a hand on the perch and forced their head away. This was a good spot to see the rest of the city from.
Has he ever been up here and seen it? Yubel added that to the list of questions that they would ask him when the time came. Because it would come; sooner or later. Somehow. Yubel didn’t exactly know how, but the more time passed, the more certain they became of it.
Somehow, they would meet him, and they would be able to ask all they wanted and answer all that he wanted. Surely he had questions too. Surely he felt the same way that they did, that they were drawn to one another.
Yubel didn’t know what the word for such a feeling would be. It had to exist; they just didn’t know what it would be. And whether or not they could name it, that drawing hummed under their skin and raced along with their blood, spun through their feathers and their hair, and sang in perfect time with every breath that they took.
Yubel leaped forward. There wasn’t any thought involved with this. The time was now and they took it. They spread their wings, darting too fast for most of the guards to realize they’d even been there. Timing was everything.
They knew where the gaps in the spell-crafted defenses were. They dodged through them quickly. Yubel had always been able to see magic, but hadn’t ever tried to weave it. One needed a proper teacher for that, and teachers required payment. Just getting money to eat and have shelter and clothes was enough of a struggle. Having money for a teacher for a gift that might not even be worth the effort? That was worth a laugh.
But now they flittered through the tiny gaps, resting where they could to avoid the eyes of the guards. They’d done this once before. But Yubel wasn’t foolish enough to think that he would be in the same place as before. It wasn’t the same day or even the same time of day and very few people’s schedules were that strict.
So they searched, taking time to watch for guards and for places they could move through the web of spells, and listened and watched for any sign of him. There weren’t so many Flightless here, were they? They could find him. They would always find him.
There were perches inside the palace grounds, Yubel discovered, ones of far finer make than those out in the city. Those were good enough, but these were far better, crafted of rare woods polished to a mirror shine, frequently littered about with couches and chairs that one could rest in.
Yubel could even see some of the nobles lounging on one or two of the perches. They made certain not to perch too near in those cases. If someone got too good of a look, it would be easy to identify Yubel as an intruder. The clothes alone – tattered tunic and sandals that didn’t fit nearly as well as they had when Yubel first found them – made that obvious.
So they stayed at a distance and did their best to blend in, staying slumped and looking away, as if a simple servant. Yubel didn’t think they would notice a servant.
“You!” A voice cracked out and Yubel leaped up at once, eyes darting around in search of a way to escape. Before they could, though, a tall man with insectoid wings landed in front of them. “Where do you work at?”
Yubel’s lip quivered; this was it, they would be taken to the dungeon and never again see the light of day or the rising of the moon, never again fly or dance with the wind. Even worse, they would never see him again.
“Oh, I don’t care.” The stranger glowered down at Yubel. Yubel noticed they weren’t as finely dressed as nobles or royalty would be, though they certainly weren’t as poorly clad as they were. “I guess you’re new. You don’t have a uniform yet?”
Yubel clung to that. “Yessir. I mean, nosir. I don’t.” It wasn’t in all technicality a lie. This was only their second time in the palace environs and they didn’t have a uniform – would likely never get one. But that wasn’t what had been asked.
“Come with me.” He turned and fluttered back into the air, Yubel following nervously. Surely he would figure out that they didn’t belong and then they would be sent to the dungeon?
But if this stranger, whoever he was, guessed at what Yubel feared, he made no mention of it. Instead, he guided them to a bathing area and gestured in.
“Go clean up. I’ll have a uniform ready when you get out. And hurry it up. The prince needs his lunch soon.”
Yubel almost froze on the spot. Could it really be? Had they somehow stumbled into that much luck?
The only thing that kept them from freezing altogether was the stranger pushing them into the bathing area and then stalking off. Yubel stared around in surprise, brain slowly unsticking, then one clear thought burst in.
I can see him again! And maybe this time they could actually talk to him.
Yubel hadn’t ever really wanted to take up a servant’s position. Or in truth, they’d never considered that they had the chance. Servants in the royal palace were almost considered royalty themselves, of a different sort. Frequently the position passed down from one generation to another. At least Yubel heard things like that, though it couldn’t be entirely true, not if this person thought Yubel was a new servant.
But if it gave them that chance to see him and talk to him, then Yubel would gladly be his servant for all of their days.
Quickly they stripped and plunged into the waiting tub of hot water, scrubbing until their skin turned red. Keeping their wings out of the water turned out a touch more difficult than expected, but Yubel managed it. There were combs and brushes to settle their hair and feathers into place – though they couldn’t be as well groomed on the wings as they liked. Reaching them remained difficult.
The stranger – Yubel guessed that he was someone in charge of the servants - threw the door open and stalked in, carrying a supply of clothes that he dropped onto the nearest table.
“Don’t take much longer. He’s almost finished his morning lessons and he’s going to need his lunch,” he warned before stalking back out again.
Lunch. Lessons. Yubel couldn’t yet wrap their mind about those things, let alone that they might bring him his lunch. But they carefully started to pull the clothes on anyway. Seeing would be believing.
The uniform fit better than Yubel would have presumed without some kind of measurements being taken. It was all in dark gray cloth, soft to the touch, with elegant embroidery around the neck and sleeves and the wing-openings. Yubel slipped their wings through the holes then spread them out for a few moments before refolding them, then reached to get the new shoes provided. Real shoes, not sandals that they’d outgrown far too quickly.
One side of the room had been made out of something reflective. Yubel stared at their own image for a few heart-stopping moments. Never before had they seen something like this – had they seen themselves like this. But there they were, dressed in clean and whole clothes for the very first time in their lives. What would be next, some kind of meal?
No, that couldn’t be, not when they were supposed to be taking the prince his meal. But Yubel shivered at that thought as well.
“Good, you’re ready. Come on.” The senior servant beckoned from the door and Yubel followed, hurrying in his wake as he hurried through the corridors. “What’s your name?”
“Yubel, sir,” Yubel murmured, more worried with each moment that they would say or do something that would reveal they weren’t really a servant to this man. Once that was out, Yubel just knew it would be the dungeons for them. Or worse. Suspected of trying to bring harm to the prince or the king and queen? Execution?
Yubel tried to keep breathing at that. They’d never met them and never thought of any harm to come to them. But would anyone believe them?
He repeated the name to himself a few times, frowning, before he shrugged and stopped before a door. “I can’t be expected to remember everyone,” he muttered, so low that Yubel almost didn’t hear him, before he opened the door and let out some of the most amazing scents that Yubel had ever encountered in their entire life. Their stomach roared at once, ignoring how nervous Yubel was in exchange for demanding some of that food.
The servant looked down, a frown twisting his lips. “You should have already eaten your lunch. If you skipped it, you have to wait until dinner. Understood?”
Yubel gulped and nodded. They had eaten lunch, but lunch had been a half of an apple and half a bowl of soup bought from a street vendor. It would have sufficed for the rest of the day until some dinner could be scrounged somewhere, if all of this wonderful food hadn’t presented itself. Now that it had, Yubel knew they were hungry. Very hungry.
The servant called into the room and someone else brought a tray towards them, holding it towards Yubel, who took it gingerly. The tray itself was cool but the plates on it steamed deliciously. Yubel recognized meat and vegetables and what was probably watered wine of some sort – Kuragari was the wine center of the world, after all – but couldn’t have named any specific dishes.
“Go that way,” the senior servant instructed, gesturing towards another hallway. “Take the third corridor, go up two flights of stairs, and then the second hallway after that. The prince will be in the second room on the left. Come back right away or when he dismisses you, whichever comes first.”
Yubel nodded and hurried away, repeating the directions silently as they did. They weren’t going to go wrong here. A chance like this could never come again.
Third corridor. Yubel counted as they passed them, wondering what lay down the first and second. I won’t find out. I can’t stay here. It would be too risky. This was the royal palace. They didn’t hire scruffy little nothings like them to work here. This was all a glorious mistake and the best thing to do would be to get out after actually being blessed enough to meet the prince. But they weren’t going to push their luck.
Yubel spied the first flight of stairs and headed up there. One good point about all of this was that the whole palace had clearly been designed for use by those with wings, even the servants. The steps were wide and easy to climb, and if Yubel had dared, they could have flown up them. Carrying the tray made it more difficult, though, so that was a chance Yubel didn’t take.
Instead, they just hurried along, trying to get there before the food got cold. Though a careful look at it showed that wasn’t a problem either: enchantments had been set on it that were likely there to keep the food hot. Yubel could see magic. Yubel didn’t always know what the magic had been cast to do.
The closer they came to where the prince was supposed to be, the more nervous Yubel grew. The tray was heavy, though not so much that they couldn’t carry it safely, but it seemed to get worse with each moment anyway. Yubel didn’t know what could be nerves and what could just be the tray itself.
A guard stood outside the door and the moment she caught sight of Yubel, she raised her weapon to bar the way.
“Your purpose?”
Yubel tensed, a ripple of worry flickering through their wings. Magic flowed all around this guardswoman, bright red like fire. Yubel swallowed. More truth, just a little shaded.
“I’m bringing the prince his dinner,” they said, holding up the tray. The guardswoman gave it a careful look, then stepped aside, opening the door.
“Go on, then. You’re new, aren’t you?”
Yubel wondered how often they would be asked that before they could get out of there. But for now, they just nodded, and hurried into the room.
And just like that, he was there. The room itself had two exits, the door Yubel came in by and one other one. Someone wrapped in magic, with poorly kept wings, stood near that door, but all of Yubel’s attention remained focused on the prince.
To most eyes he would have been sort of dull. Ordinary brown hair and eyes, a little thin compared to most Fliers of his age, though very well dressed, as befit a prince. To Yubel, he glowed with an inner strength that made them want to stay by his side forever.
He looked toward them as they entered, and Yubel ducked their head down on instinct as they carried the tray to the table in front of him. He said nothing at all and Yubel focused on setting the food before him instead of anything else. They were posing as a servant. That was what a servant would do.
Then the food was there and he hadn’t said anything, and Yubel began to take a step back. It had all been inside their own head and he’d never felt anything, never knew, never guessed…
They turned toward the door.
“Wait.”
Yubel froze. The prince rose up and stared at them, until without warning, his entire face lit up in sheer joy.
“It’s you!”

Residenza Q in Abruzzo
22 Nov 2020
Residenza Q
Design: Architect Valeria Aretusi
Location: Abruzzo, Italy
In Abruzzo, halfway between sea and olive trees, a ruin had been transformed by architect Valeria Aretusi into a villa with a clean and Nordic design, flooded with light and blue, fragrant of wood and salt.
“To me, Residenza Q is the scent of wood, the emotion of blue and the balance of form, all overlooking the sea”.
“An organic dialogue between inside and outside, the villa and the surrounding landscape, the olive trees, the hill, the Adriatic Sea”.
“In this project I combined the geometric and neat design of Northern Europe, which I am fascinated by, with a touch of Morocco, coming to life in a small and secluded conservatory as an homage to the Majorelle Garden, which the owners would have loved to bring back from their travels”. Arch. Valeria Aretusi
Residenza Q is a villa surrounded by olive trees on the hills of Abruzzo, resulting from the demolition and enlargement of a ruin located on top of a hill overlooking the sea, on the slopes of the village of Montepagano.
Q is the letter chosen by the architect Valeria Aretusi for the owners: the master pastry chefs of the Ferretti family. The Q represents a closed nucleus, symbol of the house, with a descending curve which simulates the incline that leads to the coast, since the house was built on a soft hill facing the Adriatic Sea.
A project with minimal architecture, Scandinavian style and a solid eco-sustainable foundation, which has an area of 120 square meters for each of the two floors. The ground floor of the module on the southern side consists of a living room with fireplace, kitchen, study room, utility room and bathroom, while the attic houses two bedrooms with private bathrooms and a solarium. The module on the northern side, instead, is a large open space with attic, bedroom, bathroom and solarium.
Residenza Q has a gabled roof which – shifting on the main ridge axis – allows the two units a staggered placement. This choice gives privacy to each of the modules, thus maintaining the identity of a single dwelling surrounded by greenery.
The clean and geometric design, reminiscent of Danish and Norwegian homes, is surprising for the warmth of its interiors, thanks to the use of wood, the exposed beams in the sleeping area and the window/floor surface ratio. The front door frames the sea, the first element in perspective that can be perceived as soon as you enter. The windows are designed to have specific points of view towards the outside and the surrounding nature, without visually interfering with pedestrians, cars and the property nearby. To enhance privacy and give color to the light of the interiors, the architect created a conservatory with coarse-grained blue plaster, inspired by the Majorelle garden in Marrakech. The courtyard of the conservatory – rich in succulent plants – is overlooked by large rough-cut wooden beams, designed to filter daylight without obscuring it. Here the inspiration comes from Luis Barragàn: from the blue courtyard the light flows through the interiors acquiring a new dimension, creating a state of mind.
The rhythm of the façades is marked by the verticality of the cladding staves, and interspersed with the free positioning of windows and French windows. On the east façade, instead, there is a return to geometry, thanks to a couple of specular sliding windows, of about 8 meters each, facing the sea.
The structure has a linear shape with two pitches that converge with the perimeter walls, without overhangs, thus respecting the minimal style of the project. The roof is covered with matte grey sheet metal with a retractable rainwater collector. The same invisible system was also used for the terraces.
The eco-sustainable approach of the building is highlighted by the use of the biological system with aerated percolation: a purification system that allows to transform and recover water for the irrigation of the garden and vegetable garden. Moreover, the residence is realised with ecological materials and technologies – X-Lam wood structure, covered in Déco – and both internally and externally uses shades of a grey palette. The external covering is vertically assembled to match the linearity of the project, while the grey tones on the wood grain are used to enhance the texture of the construction. The variation of the sunlight affects the perception of the color on the surfaces, according to a chromatic range that goes from dark tones to dove grey and light grey.
The material used for the exterior is a natural composite wood – WPC (wood polymer composite) – assembled as a ventilated wall: an effective coating to solve the problems related to the protection of buildings from humidity and atmospheric agents, while improving the thermal and acoustic insulation.
If the exterior has a compact and monolithic appearance, the materials chosen for the interiors give warmth to the setting: natural larch wood and umber oak wood, glazed brass details, mud flat lacquered carpentry, terrazzo effect quartz tops and herringbone oak parquet.
The kitchen, which naturally develops from the living room, is the space that best emphasises the harmony between the house and the nature of the surrounding environment: the conservatory is, in fact, fully integrated structurally and visually in this room.
For the back wall of the kitchen, moreover, a smoked reflective background in a bronze tone has been chosen to evoke the gleaming sun on the sea, while the blue Majorelle of the winter garden, in Moroccan style, creates a dialogue with the view of the Adriatic Sea.
The staircase, made of anthracite-colored bent iron sheets, is light and veiled by the wall of cross perforated sheet. The velvets in primary colors which embellish the interior were also used for the restoration of Chiavari chairs in wood and brass.
The interiors of the house also boast prestigious names: Ernestomeda’s kitchen, specially designed for this villa, is Riflessi Mare on a Bavuso design model, the wallpapers are by Cole & Son and Gucci, while the fabrics are by Morris & Co. and Gastón y Daniela.
Residenza Q in Abruzzo, Italy – Building Information
Project: Architect Valeria Aretusi Location: Roseto degli Abruzzi (Teramo), Piana Grande area Property: Ferretti family – (owners of the historical Ferretti Pastry Shop, Academy of Italian Master Pastry Chefs)
About Valeria Aretusi Valeria Aretusi – born in 1983 – is an architect with a penchant for wooden houses and vertical gardens. She lives between Livorno and Abruzzo, working all over the Italian territory. She trained in Rome and Paris, where she studied architecture while starting a career as a DJ at the same time. She worked for several years with the Claudio Nardi Architects studio in Florence, dealing mainly with retail, residences and large-scale commissions. She currently focuses her work on private projects related to eco-sustainable wooden houses and renovations of apartments and houses in Nordic style, with a particular attention to the past and memory through the recovery of abandoned urban and architectural spaces.
In 2017 she founded the street art gallery Uovo alla Pop in Livorno, a dynamic exhibition space and home of her personal studio. She is the curator of the settings and installations of the gallery. Moreover, with the rest of the team she creates educational projects and public art initiatives aimed at urban regeneration, by merging art and architecture.
Respecting nature – and connecting to it – is essential for Valeria’s work, having the mission to lead the client towards this research. Therefore, in her projects we find great attention to the use of light or the development of vertical gardens for those who live in small spaces.

[fanfic]  Captured & Confused:  Chapter 13
Offmon refused to do anything but stare at the wall that turned into a door whenever someone from the outside came near it. He was alone. He’d been alone here since Charismon reached in and grabbed hold of Yuujin.
They’ll bring him back. They have to.
Offmon reminded himself of that as often as he started to worry that he might not see Yuujin again. That was more times than he wanted to think about.
He’d been alone almost his entire life, ever since offline games were a thing. Now he had Yuujin and he didn’t want to ever not have Yuujin.
So if anything happened to him, Offmon promised himself that he would do something to put it right. Exactly what he would do he hadn’t made up his mind yet. If he couldn’t become Shutmon without Yuujin, then he would find a way around it.
He didn’t like the way he wanted to destroy everything as Shutmon. Only Yuujin kept him calm when he was at that point. So if the Ultimate Four and Leviathan took Yuujin away from him? They would pay for it.
The longer Yuujin wasn’t there, the more Offmon wanted to be able to become Shutmon and just start shutting everything down. What were they doing to him out there? Why did they do anything that they couldn’t do in here?
None of this made any sense and Offmon above all else wanted it to stop so they could go home and have a good dinner and sleep.
Yuujin had made a comfortable bed for him at home. It was better than any other place to sleep Offmon had ever encountered: a basket just a little bigger than he was, with a comfortable cushion on the inside, and a warm blanket on top that Yuujin always made certain to tuck in over him when they went to sleep. The first time he’d seen it, Offmon wasn’t ashamed to admit that he’d happily squealed.
“This is mine? Really?”
Yuujin’s smile warmed him from the inside out. “Of course it is. Let me know what else you’d like.”
Offmon wished he had the basket with them right now. The room itself was barely big enough to take half a dozen steps in all the way around, and while cuddling up to Yuujin remained pleasant, especially since it seemed to comfort his buddy as well, it wasn’t at all like being at home.
The basket wasn’t even close to everything that Offmon wanted. A good meal for both of them and being let out of here remained at the top of the list. To never see any of these bad Appmon again came right underneath that.
The door opened. Yuujin stood there. Offmon got up, thrilled to see him again, and froze where he was. Yuujin didn’t look right. He stood stiff and unmoving, and his eyes...they weren’t like the usual warm Yuujin eyes. They were distant and emotionless, with a tiny flicker of red.
Then the door closed and Yuujin blinked, focused on him, and he smiled. Just like Yuujin always smiled.
Offmon didn’t know what to think. Were they doing things to him? Had they done something to him?
But for now he didn’t care; he’d work it out later. He glomped onto Yuujin’s leg, too glad to see him back for anything else to matter.
Soon enough they were both cuddled on the floor again. Offmon noticed that the sounds of Yuujin’s rumbling stomach from earlier weren’t there anymore.
“Did they feed you?” Offmon wondered. Humans needed food a lot more than Appmon did. If he didn’t eat, he’d just go back to his chip form. Humans couldn’t do that.
Yuujin frowned, eyes closed in thought for a few moments. “I think so. It wasn’t really good, though. Some kind of a gruel.” He cracked his eyes open to look down at his stomach. “I hope mom doesn’t worry too much.”
“Haru probably told her something?” Offmon suggested, wanting to cheer Yuujin up. “She’ll be all right and we’ll be out of here soon.”
Offmon wanted to believe that with every scrap of his heart and he knew Yuujin did too.
So they waited.
