Hello I want to ask how do you write characters without ooc cause I always can't handle their personality and make everyone sounds the same

content warnings: this does not apply to those who are sure that their character is canonical, or to those who want to keep as canonical an image as possible, because I, uh, don't do that.

me? without ooc? honey, I don't think we're talking about me /playful

but seriously, as soon as you stop worrying that the characters look "the same", it will be a good step. because, whether we want it or not, our characters will always be different — only the creators can describe them without changes in character, and then not always.

but I think the problem is more that "they sound the same". this is due to the "one-face syndrome", when all the characters, starting from the oc and ending with the canon, do not differ from each other except in little things like appearance and names.

If I'm right, then I understand what you're talking about, I have this happening regularly.

[of course, I cannot give exclusive advice, because such things are purely individual and it is difficult to find the reason without independent analysis.]

a. recreating and filling in.

all your characters are different people. when you notice that everything repeats, you start over — or edit. the easiest thing is to get them to interact with each other.

and do it your way.

give them the traumatic situations that you have. give them the obsessions you once had. give them those interesting things that you would like to write about.

wow, if this character has good hearing and emotionality, then let them have talent in art! hmm, this character is very quiet and loves silence, why wouldn't they love board games? or maybe they are quiet because they lack emotions — which means they probably like passionate events, like concerts or parties, even if they are uncomfortable being there.

yes, it wasn't mentioned in the canon, but, listen, you're not writing for the canon — you're writing for yourself and for readers. "conform to the canon" is a bit boring, especially if this canon is not so character-oriented.

the "why" exercise helps me if I feel that the character is very lacking in depth. there's nothing wrong if you do more here and there without breaking.

if your character gets along well with dogs, then why wouldn't they want to have a dog? maybe they would also like to do morning runs. after all, dogs need to be walked — and this will help them take care of themselves. if they take care of themselves through physical exercise, then maybe they have a preference in sports. what exactly are their preferences? how did they appear? maybe they were pugnacious as children, or they had an authoritative figure in sports, or they had to defend themselves from something. but what to defend against? or how did this authoritative figure influence them? why were they pugnacious? and etc.

of course, it's good if the characters already have everything described in detail — but this is a huge rarity; especially if you write au. it is recreating the past or combining it with your headcanons and bringing it to a personality that has already been formed by the canon that helps to best understand the character.

in order to understand someone and predict their behavior, you need to know everything about them — or make sure that you know.

it is not necessary to write about it openly or explain something to someone if there is no desire, but such an analysis helps me if I feel drowning.

also, you can imagine the reaction of the characters who find themselves in the same situation. usually it is the most dangerous and most peaceful times that reveal the identity.

you can fantasize about their dream. how they calm themselves down. what they do when they are alone. what is their motivation, what they strive for and what they are ready to do. if you are interested in mbti, enneagram and similar things, then this can also help.

b. writing personality characteristics.

it can be a summary, templates, some features from the generator, lines from other people's works, quotes, a selection of music, a selection of feelings, your associations — everything that will make you remember the character.

sometimes, we get lost because we have too many thoughts in our head and the need to think about a large number of characters in addition to thoughts related to work or not related to it even more. sometimes we just don't know how to create a connection with a touchy character. sometimes it seems to us that the character simply does not vibe.

as a thinker, it helps me to create a document where I write down the traits of a character — what their past seems to me, what family they came from, how their childhood passed, whether they were loved or not. even if it's just your headcannons. in the end, you write it for yourself and for your view of the character. it also helps to find an explanation for the character's action and reaction, or to make a reference in the work itself.

the creators always miss details here and there, and readers come to see which character they will like the most — that's why situations occur "I didn't like character x before, but because of your work I fell in love with them."

they love the way you portray them, not what they are in the canon. that's why moderate addition of your headcanons to the character and filling in empty spaces is good, even if it's ooc.

not everyone will understand what character I'm talking about, but those who have been reading me for a long time will immediately realize (i think). not because this character is an oc, but because I talked about all this in the works. the character of the canon is not the same as I described — but people, when they read this description, imagine him.

... do you understand, my dear?

my interpretation is considered not just my whims, but part of the character's personality — since I repeat it everywhere that some readers feel slightly confused if they read a work where the character is not like mine, even if he's more "canonical".

that's how fanon works.

c. replay.

go through it all over again. re-read the book again, re-watch the movie again, re-read the manga again, re-watch the anime again, re-try the game. you can notice what features the characters have.

bonus: get acquainted with various interesting facts, look for character analysis.

it helps me to read criticism about a character or a title, as it helps to notice flaws that I didn't see because of immersion — but I don't advise doing this if it hurts you.

maybe read a work that you really don't like and do the opposite. to do work with a hyperbolized personality. get acquainted with the fanon. art and fanfiction can help you realize which features you haven't noticed before.

even the smallest details can help you understand better.

d. little role play.

also an option! why not? imagine yourself as some kind of character to understand how you would act. it helps if you're more feeling-er.

to feel the same thing that the character felt, since everyone's actions and behavior depend primarily on upbringing and experience. if everyone has abandoned you, then in any case you are afraid of another loss — but avoiding losses can look different.

or if you got hurt. you can pretend not to be hurt, you can cry, you can ignore, you can hurt in response — this all characterizes the personality and helps to understand better.

you become a character, but the character doesn't become you — now you have to react the same way as they do and feel/understand why this is it. most often in such cases, general headcanons, fanaccounts about some character and the like help, because no one explores a character more than those who dedicate similar things to them without admixture of the reader or other characters.

alas, not everything is possible for a researcher alone — but we can always politely or impolitely spy on how others feel /hj

yes, it was worth writing about it at the very beginning, but I wanted to have to go through the most thorny paths to this obvious and well-known thought.

some characters we can't describe, not because we don't understand them, but because we're just not used to writing.

unfortunately, some things can be understood only by feeling them on yourself for a long time, no matter what kind of research you do or how many analyses you reread.

some characters may remain cardboard if you haven't formed a connection with them and don't understand them while others behave like they are alive.

this is only possible when you get used to the characters and give them your own spark. all the characters are fictional, but they become alive if you animate them with letters and thoughts. first the character comes to life in your head, and only then in your work.

I can say many more such cheesy things, but the meaning is the same: experience and experience, experience and experience. genius is a refinement to such a state that others cannot believe that it was created independently, but only by higher forces or bestowed by nature.

undoubtedly, there will be characters who will breathe under your hand, and those for whom you will rewrite the part again and again until they become natural — but this is the price that must be paid, my my.

Meeting Neon Glow Part 2

We waited and waited for a few minutes for the hostess to show up.

I sighed in disappointment and looked down at the floor. "She's probably sick today and won't be here for a while. Let's head back to the TARDIS," I said. I got out of my seat and headed for the door. "We can visit another time."

Before anyone could say anything, a mare then approached the station.

"Sorry I'm late. I was taking a long break," she informed.

My hoof was only a few inches from the doorknob as I turned my head and saw the hostess. I was surprised to see who it was.

"Neon Glow," I said.

It was actually Neon Glow herself. She looked kind of bored and not her cheery self that is usually on her blog on Tumblr.

Heartbreak had gotten off of her spot on the seat. "Wow. So, this is Neon Glow?" she asked. Heartbreak then looked at me and grinned. "Well, you finally meet her face-to-face, Lemon."

I smiled. "Yeah," I said. I approached Neon Glow. "Hi, my name is Lemon Spark, and I am such a huge fan of your work."

She rolled her eyes. "Ugh. Great, another one of you," said Neon Glow, groaning.

What she said had instantly made my smile shrink. "Um, what?" I said.

"Look, I don't need any fans coming to my place of business or even my home bothering me for an autograph, a picture, a hoofshake, or a collaboration. None of you are special at all," she said, complaining. "You're more like annoyances."

During while Neon Glow was talking, my smile was gone and instead I had a frown on my face. Doctor Whooves and Derpy felt bad for me while Heartbreak was getting angry as her hair curls started moving around.

Neon Glow continued on. "I don't even need any of you to sell my art. I can just paint, and it'd be called a masterpiece," she said. "Then, I'll put it up for auction and there'd be tons of buyers lined up, wanting what I make. It's simple as that."

That was it for Heartbreak. "Hey! You can't talk to him or any of your fans like that!" she shouted. "Art is meant to inspire and move everyp-p-ponies' souls!"

Heartbreak would have said more, but then I stopped her. "Heartbreak, it's okay. Let's just go to another restaurant," I said.

Heartbreak turned towards me. "B-but she-" she said, interrupted.

I had a stubborn look on my face. "Let's go, already," I said.

I went to the door and left out before any of them could stop me.

Heartbreak looked back at Neon Glow with a scowl. "Enjoy your fame while you still can," she warned.

Heartbreak went to the door and waited for either Doctor Whooves or Derpy to open it for her. Derpy opened the door for Heartbreak, who then left while the two followed after her. I had a straight expression on my face as I was waiting by the door.

She looked up at me. "Lemon, Are you okay? You don't have to listen to her," said Derpy. She had an angry look on her face. "That mare's just greedy for money."

I nodded. "I'm okay," I said. I looked at Doctor Whooves. "So, can we head back for the TARDIS now? I'd like to head for the next universe, please."

He nodded his head. "Okay," said Doctor Whooves.

I was silent the entire time as we headed back for the TARDIS, ignoring the others' concerned looks. Once we made it to the TARDIS, the Doctor unlocked the door, and we went inside. The TARDIS made the same unknown sound that came from the alley as it began fading away.

Neon Glow's universe is currently on Episode 8 of Season 4, "Rarity Takes Manehattan".

Developer Update #3

DISCLAIMER: Hot Hooves Gaming is an indie game developer with no ties to Hasbro or any of its properties. We don’t own any of the characters featured therein, save for the individual Original Character (OC) who has been created for this non-profit fan-made game project.

Wow! April has come and gone in a big way, and I can hardly believe that May is already here. The best part of all this is that classes are over for me and my next semester doesn’t kick in for another few months. Things have been moving particular slowly this month due to class projects and exams, but I’m hoping that May, June and July will be big productive months for our My Little Pony Visual Novel project. Moving on into the update, let’s go! ^_^

Script

We had mentioned that during March, we would be progressing with the story lines for Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack. In a rather unfortunate way, this has proven to be a very slow process due to the complexity of the first arc we began tackling: Rarity’s romance arc.

This is arguably going to be one of the longest set ups in the game, as far as the romance arcs are concerned. You see, the way that the romance arcs work is that they are fan fictions within the game that advance the plot in one way or another. I wasn’t satisfied with saying, “This is going to be the romance arc for _______. The focus of this story is going to be choosing correct dialogue options that will eventually win the heart of the fair pony by the end of the arc, and they’ll have hearts in their eyes the rest of the story from that point on.”

LAME. And without proper context. So it’s easy to make the main character a lovable dork who gains the interest of all the girls simply because he’s the new colt, or because he is the one who will save the world. Or maybe he’s the main character of the visual novel and he’s supposed to get the girl, right? Well... technically he is. It’s built into the plot that after spending time getting to know the mane six - hey it would make sense to feel impassioned about one of them right?

But what about the mane six? As far as I know, they are not ones to embrace feelings of love toward another colt - in the romantic sort of way. The build for the girls in the visual novel is going to be slow and subtle, to the point that it should feel more natural for the girls to accept that they’ve fallen for the main character who wasn’t just saying the right things all the time, but who was interacting with them constantly and helping them with internal and external issues. “Dusk” tags along with the girls so he can get to know them, and as things spring up as a result of the Crystal Crisis, the girls find that having Dusk around is a much bigger deal than simply having Twilight, or Applejack as their companion when they set off on a trip.

What does this mean for Rarity’s romance arc? I mean to say that it’s going to be much more in depth than a simple scenario where Dusk and Rarity chat for a while and eventually return to Ponyville having grown a little closer after spending quality time together. There’s going to be more to it than that. Mystery. Intrigue. A change of clothes to fit the situation and the genre for the specific situation. It’s something we’re hoping ya’ll will be able to enjoy as a side story within the main campaign of the game. 

It all culminates in the main campaign when Dusk has interacted with everyone and he has forged wonderful bonds that will sustain him for the rest of the story. Oops... at least... that’s what we want you to think anyway. >_o

Cliffnotes: Rarity’s story is still being scripted, so we’ll be working on that immediately! XD XD

Art

Art actually took a lot of attention during the month of April, thanks in part to some advice that we received from a follower on Tumblr. The gist of the conversation was spearheaded by the notion that we needed to get our artist and his respective works “out there”. Credibility, reputation, a following - these are very important factors that could make or break HHG if not handled sooner rather than later.

So during April, we released our Spring Heat Art Pack which featured six fan art pieces for MLP characters enjoying themselves in the warm Spring season. It was a great bit of practice for us, and a challenge to complete a couple of pictures a day during our Spring Break week.

We have also been working on sketch bases for characters who will be appearing in the visual novel including, Shinning Armor, Vinyl Scratch, and Octavia. 

Working on other pieces of fan art, some of which will soon be featured in a future post has also lead to a great deal of practice and increased morale among the group. Some healthy, petting to our collective ego to let us know that we are not the only ones who think that our art is improving as time goes on, and that in the context of the full visual novel - many will be able to appreciate the final product when it finally manifests. ^_^

Programming

Not too much time has gone into programming or planning anymore parts of the visual novel game. We’ve already done a fair bit of experimenting using Tyranno Builder as our visual novel engine. We feel that the prototype menus are a great start to something that could become a little more sophisticated in the future.

However, we are still focused on the scripting phase of our pre-planning process in order to better understand what the game will end up looking like at the end of the production process. By doing more research into the way that other visual novels present themselves, we’re hoping we can come up with an aesthetically pleasing way of presenting our game. When the script is finished, it will be much easier to build the game according to the dialogue and narrative content.

Our main focus for this month is going to be completing the romance arcs for all of our characters in the story. That is, to finish the stories beyond the half way point that we have set up for each of the Mane 6. Twilight, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie have half of their arcs complete - next up will be the first half of Rarity, Rainbow Dash and Applejack. After ward, Dusk will take a full day to complete the rest of the romance arcs for all of the girls.

The main campaign will then continue with a very exciting revelation that will turn our main character’s world upside down. O_O

That’s going to wrap up this month’s Developer Update for the month of April (in May) XD. Class made things a bit slow for the month of April, but with May on the horizon, we hope to finish a lot of content in order to move the project ahead.

Well, I’m back again with my second review and to be honest, this kid is a Gary-sue.

No, I’m not holding back. Anyway, let’s get started.

Look whatever, Japanese names are whatever. But in this context, it doesn't make much sense for tons of Japanese named characters. Like, doesn't the AoT universe take place on an island that looks strikingly like Madagascar?

Now, if this theory is right, let’s look at the percentage of Asian people in Madagascar.

I’m not saying it’s illegal to make an Asian AoT oc, but it would make them a minority. I’m just saying, it would be more of a rarity.

This is more of a loose cannon since obviously, the AoT world isn’t identical to the real world but I digress.

Also, the meaning of his name is devil displeased?

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

As we already know, according to the creator of the oc, both Manuyo and Kenny are gay. So that makes the legal age of consent now 21.

According to my very smart friend, Kenny looks as if he’s in 40s, which I agree with. So that makes their relationship an example of rape (statutory rape). Which is just kind of sort of illegal. Look as mentioned before, the AoT universe isn’t a carbon copy of the real world. But keep in mind, this ship is a 15 year old boy paired with a 40+-year-old man. It’s just not right, ok?

Skin Tone: i dunno how it says but, it's like Eren.

Body Shape/Build: Like Eren.

“Like Eren” is not a valid description, it makes him look like a copy or wannabe Eren. I’m just saying, it’s not the best idea. Here are some better descriptions to use.

Body build: Skinny, yet muscular

Mental (Any problems? Example: depression): Blocking emotional, split personality, he got second personality's evil, sadistic or crazy, "twisted".

MPD FASCINATES ME

So I know exactly what causes it:

Past

Most if not all cases of MPD are caused by horrible childhood events such as rape, abuse, or neglect. So let’s skip ahead and see what his past is like:

Manuyo's mother didn't want him because of his sickness (schizophrenia),

so his mother forced him to carry the star on the brassieres and to have papers, when they see a grade, his parents go to see something and leave him alone

One day they denounced it to be a mahr so they threw it from the wall.

Around 12 years, he chooses to go in the training corps and then go into the Survey Corps or Military Police, he makes some friends like Searlait, Kuklo.

Also, he says to have been in an orphanage to the south of the wall not to awake suspicions.

It’s vague, ey? But it shows that his parents just sent him away. That isn’t as intense of the usual causes of MPD. MPD is literally the brain making a new persona for the person as a coping mechanism. To repress memories. Yeah his backstory does not cut it for “extremely tragic”. Look, either keep the MPD and make his backstory more intense, or just get rid of the MPD. Also, this kid is in the military mind you, they don't usually want mentally ill people fighting for them.

Also the personality itself.

What are their names?

What are their ages?

MPD personalities almost always have a different name and or age from the host. Also, most have more than two personalities. It’s very rare for a person with MPD to only have one other personality.

Now for the personality's personality.

That is so cliche! All “bad” ocs have an unexplainable “crazy/twisted side”. Look insane ocs are cool if they are fucking explained. This is making me mad for two reasons. One it’s not explained and two it helps boost the stereotype that all MPD sufferers are insane and crazy. Which isn’t true! Not all MPD sufferers have some crazy dark side that commits crimes. Actually, most of them don’t! Anyway, enough with the psychology stuff!

The stats are actually not horrible.

3D Maneuvering Gear:8- he learned to use his 3dmg, he at immediately love having to use his 3dmg.

Intelligence:7 - he read many books.

Martial Arts:8 - he trains with Reiner, Bertholdt and Eren.

Battle Skill: 8-

Agility:7 - he's quick.

Strategy: 3 - he needs teammate for strategy.

Teamwork:5 - he work sometimes alone but also he need help.

Passion:7-

Not too low, not too high. Seems fine to me.

MY VERY FIRST PONY OC! WOW AM I HAPPY WITH HOW IT TURNED OUT XD had to make the background somethin other than white to show her horn

Name: Dull Pastel

Nicknames: Dully, Dark Glass, Queen of glass

Species: Alicorn? (she is actually a pegasus, but due to people making stories and twisting her looks with their stories people think she is an alicorn or a “queen of glass” read the back story for details ;3 )

Gender: Female (or mare)

age: was sixteen but people are very confused after the accident as to what her age is now

height: average mare

weight: very light and skinny

special talent: somehow she can use her glass “horn” and is able to use magic, its very weak however, she usually sits by herself in her room drawing on the walls, when she runs out of room she uses another color and is in a loop of using only two colors, a weird purple ink and black. (sorry needed to add that - -” idk why....) she uses her horn and uses what ever she can feel as a canvas, her magic is weird and no one has seen it.

Backstory:

with a slow limp walk and a dead black souless stare she is the “outcast” and halloween “foal-tale” of ponyville. her original name not changed he was a very bright artist for her name, being bright and bubbly in personality, she kept her hair up most the time to keep it from getting dirty during her times of art, she was a very kind and helping pegasus always teaching fillies about art and maybe helping them find their destiny, little Dully was very... “normal” she always had one fear though, mirrors, none of her friends knew why, they would never be able to get her to go to the crystal empire due to the crystals being very clean and shiny, “she is scared of her own refletion” ponies would say, she would never have any mirrors, windows were different cause they were clear and she could see behind it, she had this fear because of a dream when she was a filly, in the dream she looked into a mirror and had to get a new one due to the grimeyness, unable to clean it for some reason. When she removed the glass to replace it she saw her own dead body, dead eyes and stitches as if she was a rag doll, after she woke up with a scream she ordered her family and friends to get rid off all of the mirrors. She never wanted to see one after that. after a while she finally decided to face her fear. she went to raritys and looked directly into the mirror as rarity dressed her, she never spoke a word, rarity went to grab some ribbon and heard a loud SMASH! she ran and saw a trail of inky hoof prints on the ground leading outside, the dress ripped off of Pastel It seemed. now in the everfree forest she lives alone in an old home, painting to herself. no friends, no destiny it seems. ponies discribe her to have no mouth and black eye sockets, when she is to a certain point she can open her mouth, more like tear her flesh away into a black abys, ink spilling out of her eyes and mouth, stitched ears and a heart stitched into her cheek, just like in her dream.
