Book Gist: Wade is growing up in 2045, with nothing and no one to his name. His saving grace from a life of boredom and loneliness: The Hunt. The creator of the most used product in the world, The OASIS, left behind a challenge when he died 5 years ago that whoever can solve all the clues, pass every challenge, and collect every key will win his Easter Egg, which will make the winner richer than their wildest dreams, and give them full control over the OASIS. Wade isn’t the only one searching, millions of OASIS users have had their hands in the hunt, but the most dangerous is by far the Sixers of IOI, the quickly-monopolizing second tech company that will corrupt and destroy the sanctuary that Halliday built in the OASIS to turn it into another capitalist endeavor. Wade is trying to win it before IOI can, but if he is so poor he can’t even leave his school’s planet, how is supposed to solve anything?

Overall Review:

Pre-read:

The movie is by far one of my most favorite films of all time. I can pick it up at any point and immediately start quoting word for word. It’s my comfort film.

That being said, this read was highly anticipated, and I have not circled back yet to read Ready Player Two (though it’s on my list for next month because I am very excited that the sequel film was green lit).

Plot:

And, I think because I’ve lived the movie for years, I wasn’t made about how different the book was, BECAUSE my source material was the film, knowing the film was adapting the novel. I wasn’t attached one way or another on seeing parts of the book in the film. And because I have a mind for film, and how adaptions work, I could recognize why such significant parts of the story had to be changed, like the fact that there are 6 challenges (one per key and one per gate), or Daito and Sho being related, or iROK’s entire character (he drove me crazy tbh). To bring that to film would be such a struggle, because it’s so well layered and incorporated in the novel, with the pace and the plot structure, keeping that would not be plausible for a film timeframe and a bit too busy for the attention span of a film viewer.

Worldbuilding:

What I also really loved about the book was the detail! It was all so intricate and so reference heavy. It goes so much deeper in the book than it ever went in the film, and I love that. Because I’m the kind of person who can identify a detail as it is presented that’s meant to be hidden only to be very important later on, this book had me on the edge of my seat, I had no clue what would matter and what wouldn’t, which is exactly the reason why Halliday’s Hunt was so hard in the first place, so I really felt right in the middle of it all.

Romantic Sub-Plot:

Wade and Samantha’s relationship was a lot less interesting and a lot less necessary in the book, I felt. I didn’t really feel their chemistry much. I think their friendship only culminating in a relationship post-egg (or even moments before the final battle) would have been a lot better, especially if they had previously acknowledged that they had feelings for each other, but it didn’t feel right to explore that side of their relationship yet.

Wade:

Also!!!! Dude, Wade is so much fucking smarter than the film makes him!! He freaking infiltrates IOI (which is so much more awful in the book) and takes them all down from the inside and then freaking escapes!! Sam was legit just allowed anywhere she wanted and then walked out in the movie. He is a literal genius.

Cast:

Losing Daito IRL really made the stakes more intense than in the film, even with the stacks blowing up and the car chase. I was really sad for a while with that one, especially for Sho.

For what Chris thinks is that he feels that Felix is someone who has been a very bright and healing energy in his life. I'm hearing the lyrics "When you walked through the door" which is Beautiful by One Direction. I feel that the moment he saw Felix he saw potential in him and thought he would be a great addition to the group. "He has a great smile!" Chan finds his optimism and sunny disposition infectious. He knows that people's opinions gets to Felix sometimes and he wished he found a better way of dealing with that. The negativity gets to him sometimes. I think Felix deals with insecurities more than we possibly realize. Felix is really sensitive to the mean things people say about him (🔫 leave that poor man alone). Chan tries to be of comfort to him and gives him advice when Felix feels out of place or judged by people. I believe they both can relate about not fitting entirely in the kpop industry. (Clarified by Two of Wands & Page of Wands) right now Chan is trying to help Felix better his skills to prepare him for something. He might help him with getting more opportunities or knows how to navigate or network with people. I'm also getting that he views Felix as a prodigy so he could be teaching him how to do certain things whether that's singing or writing songs. I don't know if i'm supposed to say this but I heard "debut single"?! 😳 Felix could have his own solo soon???

What does Felix think of Bang Chan?:

For how Felix thinks of Bang Chan, he sees him as someone who is very balanced. He feels that Chris knows when to be a leader and when to be a friend. Felix doesn't feel as pressured to be perfect around him and for that he's grateful because I think he had fears of being in a group with people who were very mean because he could of encountered some trainees who didn't have the warmest disposition. He thinks that Chan is very confident as well, "born to be a leader". Felix believes that Chan is good with people and navigating the crowd or fans during performances or events. Again with this finacial opportunity?! Felix thinks that Chan provides him with abundance in his finances and career. I feel like Chan is the type of person who makes sure the members get paid or get their royalties because he knows that people can't get fucked over in the industry (good on ya, Chris 🫡). 🕹 Sag, Scorpio, Virgo, and Gemini Mercuries might enjoy Choose Your Own Adventure games. (I personally love the Choice of Games and Hosted Games ones, just a sugestion).

⚔ I say this because it allows the mind to be kept preoccupied with reading as well making choices that impact the story. Its a learning opportunity (Gem and Sag) and can allow one to spend time to themselves (Scorpio and Virgo).

⚔ If Virgos gonna play anything its a puzzle game. Something about having to think AND seeing how things interact in real time just *chefs kiss*. These games can vary from the choice ones mentioned to Sudoku and Word searches.

⚔ Pretty sure Geminis like Mahjong and other games like those. You might even find them playing Mancala to pass the time. While that might seem out of character, they enjoy the competition and the ability to relax.

⚔ Sagittarius might play a lot of mobile games. Like there's going to be variety in the type played and a vast majority will be multiplayer and competition based. I could even see PvP or PvEs as their go to.

🕹 More action/story games like Halo, Call of Duty and even the Wolfenstien franchise would call to those with heavy Aries, Scorpio as well as Capricorn Mars.

⚔ The reason being is these games focus both on fighting and the relationships the characters have with each other. Mars focus on the energy you put in the simplest terms, these signs as well are focused on both self and other, so the addition of being able to see how the fighting is nice.

⚔ Capricorns also love board games. Life, Monopoly etc all require not only co operation but strategic planning. Might also enjoy chess, and other classical board games.

⚔ Never met a Scorpio that for some reason doesn't love hand games. ⚔ I mainly named games that give off a more peaceful vibe because these signs want the ability to have consistent changes made and tranquility. With the open world aspect being there it allows the addition of playing with other people and not being alone (as these sign are still social, to varying degrees).

⚔Libra really likes the socializing aspects of games. It allows them to mirror real life interactions they have a learn more about their world. They could've also been the type to play make believe games with others.

⚔ Pisces played dress up. It doesn't matter the gender, like Libra their imagination was very vivid. These were also the fairy, knight and made up bedtime games kids. It still bleeds into their adult life more in terms of enjoy fantasy and historical drama games.

⚔ The named these three because of the dark themes they all carry. Little Nightmares has flashes of bright colors and still a dark game, GTA has various dark topics talked about a done through out the series, and Among Us is a dark comedy in a way despite all the very bright colors of the game. They all have a host of memory and puzzles through out them all and all three of the signs enjoy these a lot. Lastly you can have both open world and changing your character dynamics to fit the environment which is something all the signs do.

⚔ Another note is these signs would definitely plays games from their childhood. Taurus would enjoy cooking and home making games they played when younger. Leo would enjoy the fashion and art games. Aquarius would play retro games that either got remastered or no longer get sold.
