The funniest thing about living in a city as old as Deventer (1250 years old! Which isn’t as old as Maastricht but still a lot older than The Hague and Amsterdam) is that whenever a building gets demolished there’s always an archeological site that opens up there. They demolished a whole row of houses recently and now they can’t do anything because the whole site has little yellow signs with numbers all over it and what looks like some cool uncovered foundations of older buildings

Judy Garland (Meet Me In St. Louis, A Star is Born, Summer Stock)— Judy is the GOAT when it comes to classic movie musicals. The voice of an angel who deserved so much better than she got. She can sing she can dance she can act she's a triple threat. Though she had a turbulent personal life (her treatment as a child star by the studio system makes me mad as hell like Louis b Mayer fight me ((she was made to believe that she was physically unattractive by the constant criticism of film executives who made her feel ugly and who manipulated her onscreen appearance by capping her teeth and using discs in her nose to change its shape and Mayer called her "my little hunchback" like imagine hearing that as a child and not having damage)) she always goddamn delivered on screen and in any performance she gave. She began in vaudeville performing with her sisters and was signed to MGM at 13. Starting out in supporting parts especially paired with mickey Rooney in a bunch of films (she's the best part tbh) she eventually transferred to the lead role. She is best known for her starring role in movie musicals like the iconic Wizard of Oz (somewhere over the rainbow still hits hard and is ranked the top film song of all time), meet me in St. Louis (Judy singing have your self a merry little Christmas brings tears to the eyes she is that powerful), the Harvey girls (she looks like a technicolor dream and sings a catchy af song about trains), Easter parade ( dancing and singing with Fred Astaire), for me and my gal, the pirate, and summer stock ( with pal Gene Kelly who she helped when he was starting out and he helped her when she was struggling). But she also does non- singing just as well like the clock ( her first movie where she sings no songs and is an underrated ww2 era romance), her Oscar nominated a star is born ( like the man that got away she put her whole soul in that and I have beef with the fact she lost to grace kelly ((whom I love but like still not even her best work)), and judgement at Nuremberg (a courtroom drama about the nazi war criminal trials). Outside of film she made concert appearances to record-breaking audiences, released 8 studio albums, and had her own Emmy-nominated tv series. She was the youngest (39) and first female recipient of the Cecil B DeMille award for lifetime achievement in the film industry. Girl was a lifelong democrat and was a financial and moral supporter of many causes including the civil rights movement (she was at the March on Washington and held a press conference to protest the 16th street Baptist church bombings). She was a friend of the Kennedy family and would call jfk weekly often ending the calls by singing the first few lines of somewhere over the rainbow (she thought of them as Gemini twins). She was a member of the committee for the first amendment which was formed in response to the HUAC investigations. Though she died far too young and tragically she remains an icon for her work and her life. As a girl who didn't feel like i was as pretty as everyone else I have always felt a connection to Judy and I just really love her.
Natalie Wood (West Side Story, The Great Race)—She went through so much shit which I know can be said for all these women but Natalie really was a star and her death often overshadows her career and life. She could make you cry, but she also had the capacity to be incredibly funny which I think is lost on people.
This is round 4 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Judy's voice alone qualifies her for at least top ten hottest HOT VINTAGE MOVIE WOMEN. She was a truly incredible swing singer, with a stunning voice on top of her technique. Her short dark hair looked incredible in just about any style. Have I mentioned her swagger? I can’t do it justice with words. She had swagger. She was funny as hell, and clever too. Incredibly charming and cool. I adore her.

Her eyes, her voice have bewitched me
I mean how can you beat the one and only Judy? She's beautiful, her smile is contagious, the way she sings with her whole body. You can't help but love her.

Beautiful woman, love her singing voice. And she can do everything between happy or silly and angry or heartbroken

Top 5 books from your childhood/ adolescence, for the ask game
Here are some of my favourites from when I was a child.
The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson: X - Andy’s parents get divorced and she ends up living half the time with her mum's new family and half with her dad's. I didn't read many Jacqueline Wilson stories when I was a kid and from what I've heard, this is one of the less sad ones. Still a lot of relatable childhood emotional upheaval, with convincing characters and a neat conclusion. Andy always carries a toy rabbit with her, and when Radish goes missing, the bottom falls out of Andy’s world for a while, which I could fully understand. I had it on audiobook read beautifully by Lesley Dunlop.
The Queen's Nose by Dick King-Smith: X - Harmony’s uncle gives her a 50p piece that grants wishes. He sets her a treasure hunt/quiz to figure out how the magic works (spoiler: you rub the queen's nose). The 50p described was an old 1973 coin with nine interlinked hands, which represented the nine countries of the EEC. There were still some of these knocking around when I was little so whenever I got one, I tried rubbing it but I never found one that granted wishes. Our heroine loves animals and can't really relate to people until she's decided what animal they would be, which was a really fun aspect of this one.
Pongwiffy: A Witch of Dirty Habits by Kaye Umansky: X - Pongwiffy is a funny, filthy witch who lives on a rubbish dump. Her familiar is a badly-behaved thug of a hamster. She has a prissy best friend who despairs of her stinky ways. Just good fun, anarchic stories about naughty witches, which probably set me up to fall for the Msses Weatherwax and Ogg a bit later. A few years ago I met Kaye Umansky at a book festival and I was so awed to meet the creator of Pongwiffy. She was very gracious.
The Bear Nobody Wanted by Janet and Allan Ahlberg: X - A teddy bear learns to be happy when he gets over his own pride. This was a charming story set during WW2. The book tells us that toys get their personalities from their outward appearance. (In retrospect this is a bit problematic, but go with it.) This bear comes off the factory line with a slightly supercilious expression, making him not quite loveable, so he gets thrown in the reject bin. He goes through a series of adventures and owners. The more bashed about he becomes, the more his nature softens. Finally after being gnawed by a dog, strapped to the front of a dustcart, bombed in the Blitz, and repaired by a kind lady in a toy hospital – he ends up with a kind expression, a kinder heart, and a home to call his own.
Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer: X - On her first night in boarding school, Charlotte goes to sleep and wakes up 40 years earlier in 1918, and finds everyone is calling her Clare. Meanwhile, Clare has woken up in Charlotte's time. Charlotte and Clare spend alternating nights in each other's lives, until one night Charlotte gets trapped in 1918 and then spends several weeks there with Clare's little sister, the only one to know her secret. Can the girls get back to their own times? This is a genuinely haunting book that poses sophisticated questions about identity, dreams and memory. Charlotte even starts to doubt herself and forget who she really is. I recently read this as an adult and I enjoyed it so much. In the same vein of 'child slips through time during the night' as the more famous Tom's Midnight Garden and Stig of the Dump. (Fun fact, The Cure wrote a gloomy song inspired by this book.)
ALSO: I'd recommend Bookworm by Lucy Mangan: X for a lovely and funny memoir of childhood reading.

Lessons I learned from the Games
Most of this is just silly, some are actual lessons.
SCK/SCK2:
If you’re going to get murdered, get revenge by leaving clues to the blackmail you have on potential suspects and hope to god someone figures it out
If you’re investigating a crime, being a random transfer student at the end of the year is probably not the way to go, but no one cares because they’re too busy with college applications.
If your niece is coming to your place to investigate a murder and you’re not there, the least you can do is set up a cage to trap any possible break-ins.
Nothing beats being able to hold a gun to the murderer #whySCKremastered???
Teens dealing with pressures to meet college and parental demands
Teens resorting to drugs
Teens dealing with sexism that’s found in abundance in college and work environments
Teachers not giving a shit about what students are going through.
STFD:
If you’re getting death threats, play it cool. Keeps the perps unhinged
Toxicity of fan culture
Throw all CEOs into the closet
Nothing beats Jazz
If you’re going to commit crime in an actor’s community, you must do it with flare
MHM:
If you’re going to buy a Victorian mansion, the least you can do is check for ghosts. And also hire a carpenter beforehand
Never invest your life’s savings into anything
Treat those who help you with basic decency (my god Rose!)
If you’re snooping on someone, don’t give them any indication that you’re onto them

Don’t date people who pressure you to marry them/ask you to prove your love for them

x Within the Days The Bombs stood still [Au Lore/Plot]
x Whaaat another god damn au? Yes...Yes....Because my mafia au and historical lady in waiting au isn’t enough for me. I love making aus, it’s my drug honestly
What’s this one about Cev?
x Cold war era, androids, falling in love with the wrong person, trying to stay alive, and a bittersweet ending! Is it all historically accounted for? Nah. But It’s a funny little idea.
Sit back, relax and get ready for this. It’s gonna be good.
x Okay so while watching an ASMR where the listener was a robot and the YT was repairing them I had the idea of what if I/my sona was an android created by the Americans during the end of ww2 but wasn’t activated during the 70s in the middle of the cold war between America and USSR.
x America was working on a a big top secret that only England knew about to basically create the perfect robots to air drop into the USSR in case there was something going on and they needed to basically blow up the nation before the USSR blew them up. Or simply to have them be spies they send over that could automatically report back to them.
x Alfred, one of the lead sophomore scientist of the project R.A.B (Radioed Automatic Bombers) was in charge of programming and designing the human covers for each robot. Against the orders he was given Alfred too the creative freedom of tweaking each bot into having it’s own made up personality and back stories. He believed that if this robots were going to pretend to be human then they needed to fit the bill. He was stumped on what to do for one of the bots so he used inspo of the female black mathematicians he met at NASA that past summer and created M.E.L (Multipurpose Electronic Locator)
x Luckily for Alfred most of the bots were going to stay in the states to catch any Russian spies that happen to slip in. So creating M.E.L wasn’t that big of an issues considering who he based her after. Alfred had the idea of keeping two of the bots to himself for assistance anyway.
x But was put on a halt when a couple of KGB manage to break into Alfred’s unit and destroyed some of the robots and stole most of the documentation. M.E.L wasn’t completely finished like the other bots and she was going to end up like the rest until one of the spies said they should take one and send it back home to be studied so the Russian would have a lead in whatever the American's were doing. And that became the fate of M.E.L
x When M.E.L arrived in Russia (imma flip back and forth between Rus and Ussr bare with me) the scientist try to take her apart for the information but then its noted in a stolen document that Alfred in coded all his secrets into a trust data base. In order for them to get anything they would have to turn her on and "befriend" her. Only then if they ask her something top secret would she automatically give them what they wanted.
x At first they weren't going to put up with it and destroy her but the junior lead scientists Ivan saw it as a challenge and told them he would deal with her.  And in due time Ivan puts M.E.L back together, puts her human covering on and turns her on and M.E.L boots up, what they forgot to look for was to see if she spoke computer or human. So when M.E.L powered on she only responded in English and it seemed that she had a mind of her own instead of being programed to do as she was told. Ivan had more work on his hands than he was expecting.
x Ivan had to rewire her so that she understood and spoke back in Russian. When he was successful that's when things got tricky. M.E.L didn’t see the world in 1s and 0s she saw the world as if she was a real human who happen to take a nap in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ivan being the blunt person he is constantly reminded her that was false and that just made things harder.
x Ivan wasn't dealing with an robot, he was dealing with an android that thought it was human. M.E.L wanted to go home, she wanted to see her "family" but she was stuck in Russia. So Ivan lied to her and said the American left her there and that he was a simple scientist who wouldn’t mind helping her get back home as long as she followed his rules.
x M.E.L didn't like the sound of this but she had no choice but to give in and work with Ivan to get back home. And thus Ivan's rules were simple: 1) No going outside without him 2) She wasn't allowed to wonder each and anywhere in his house 3) if she didn't mind, having something to eat ready by the time he got home and 4) no asking him questions about what he did at work.
x At first M.E.L hated it, and she broke the second rule very offend when he wasn't around. So much in fact Ivan would turn her off before he left the house and have a timer to turn her back on an hour and a half before he was suppose to be home. M.E.L would ask him questions about the difference in American teach and Russian teach and Ivan had to turn her off and reprogram her to be unable to ask those questions. It was a lot of fucking work but eventually they came to an understanding and found an easy way of life to the point Ivan was happy to come home to company.
x But then Ivan started getting to comfortable and failed to report in sometimes. He started seeing M.E.L less of a robot and more of an actual person. The only thing that made it noticable M.E.L wasn’t human was the barcode on the back of her neck and the few times she would glitch out and fall to the ground. Alfred did an amazing job putting her together and if someday Ivan met the man he would taken him in secret.
x That's when things start to take a turn, Ivan isn't reporting as much information about M.E.L and it's been six months. The government starts to think Ivan is actually an American based spy trying to hide the secrets so they start investigating him and spying on him. Ivan isn't dumb and he knows they are and he is trying to cover his footsteps as best as possible.
x This even happens when Ivan is sent on a month mission to Ukraine to overlook the construction and stability of the new power planet that’s being built. He powers off M.E.L and very carefully dis mantels her to store her somewhere safe while he is away.
x But a few weeks after he returns from Ukraine he slips up one night while drinking and he kisses Mel and confesses he might actually be in love with her. And the spies catches that and the next morning Ivan's house is raided, lucky for Mel, Ivan had a feeling something was going to happen and relocated them to the other side of the house near the back where in case of anything they could escape.
x It's honestly a fight for their lives and Mel gets hurt and so does Ivan but they make it out and have to figure out how to get out of Russia and get into Ukraine then down into Poland and over into Eastern Germany. They can’t take public transport like a plane while still in soviet areas because they would be easily captured. Ivan was now an enemy of his country. It takes a year of having to hide, lie, steal and cheat to get all the way to Eastern Germany. But when they make it Ivan can no longer walk and Mel pushes him around in a wheelchair. They make it to safety and Ivan turns himself in to the Americans and Brits that have control over the Western side of Germany. Mel stays with him the whole time when it’s revealed she's an American product.
x Of course wind word catches wind and the American government is contacted and Ivan and Mel are taken back to the states where Alfred finally gets to meet his creation after two years of thinking only of his bots (Matt) survived. He tells her she’s even more human than he ever imagine her to turn out. That’s when it finally dons on Mel that Ivan wasn’t lying she really wasn’t human.  Alfred reinsures her that as long as she's willing to help her country he can push some documents to have her a real identity made. Mel accepts as long as she can stay with Ivan.
x But even that was tricky bc now the government is holding Ivan under wraps from both the public and the USSR for questioning. Ivan is really good at giving very little and taking a lot. He told them a few hints of information but not enough to truly do any damage. Eventually the Americans allows him to live in the public but he is under watch. Ivan doesn’t care as long as he can live an honest life with Mel.
x Come to find out Alfred knew all about Ivan since he started his job, Ivan was the one who was always deflecting the American messages in American air space and Alfred had to change the messages to something stupid to throw them off. Alfred offers Ivan a job at the company and they become friends (even with their constant bickering).
x In the end Ivan and Mel stay in America for the rest of Ivan's life, even getting married (that was a weird one for Al but he keeps his mouth shut)
x Ivan ends up dying of old age and Mel doesn't wish to live on without him so she goes to Alfred who is also a very old man and ask him to finally turn her off for good. He asks her if she sure and she tells him to make sure where Ivan is buried she is buried right next to him.

Heyo! So I'm like suuuuuuuuper lost on like all of your WoW posts lol. Would you mind giving me a basic run down of your characters pretty please?
hey! of course! i’ll be honest, i’m still making and fleshing out a lot of the character, but this is a pretty quick and basic run-down of what I've got so far! thank you for the lovely ask!
this is missing a few of the characters that aren’t super fleshed out yet, and yes, this is my largest cast out of the CHP series!
_-_-_
Wings of War is set during the early 1970′s, in an alternate history that allows for some advanced technology, the inclusion of Intent, and the addition of wings being a natural part of some human’s forms.
it follows four teams (fluctuating numbers between five and eight members at various points) who have been hired by the Guiding Star Corporation. their job is to “develop advancements in technology, human endurance, and product testing” which, as it turns out, means that they fight to the death in endless matches, brought back to life using what’s known as a Respawn Machine.
the teams (north, south, east, and west) are shipped between ten different bases, scattered across several different countries. this represents the ability to pick different maps in most fighting, pvp, or 1st person shooter games.
on each teams, there are specific roles that the GSC are looking to have filled. each team has a “building” class, for example, which creates the titles of Builder, Maker, Techie, and Engineer. the “sneak” class consists of Assassin, Spy, Rouge, and Thief. each class can only be filled by someone with a specific set of traits, which results in, essentially, total reliance on GSC.
two teams have wings, and two teams don’t. i’m still working on filling out all the roles and creating all the characters, but here’s a basic run-down of what I have so far!
_-_-_
Adele Adler - the handler, the woman in charge. She runs relay between all four teams, doling out missions, handling issues that arrive on and off base, and acting as go between for the Teams and the Council. she’s supposed to keep her distance between them, and had managed that for all the teams before now, but...the men are growing on her! she has a surprising soft spot for most of them, and finds herself more and more willing to turn blind eyes on their shenanigans.
-
Jeremy - West Team’s “fast class”, this boy is a Speedster through and through. he has a short temper, a severe anger problem, and briefly made a living running drugs out in Boston. his weapon of choice is a chunk of wood with some sharp nails in it, and he can hit harder than you would think. runs his mouth a lot but is the only person on his team with any ability to understand the words take care of yourself.
Joshua - West Team’s Sharpshooter, and originally from New Zealand. lives in a camper just inside of the perimeters of the base. anti-social and with no interest in changing that, he took on the job because there’s a very large bounty on his head that Adele promised to get rid of.
Feliciano - the Rouge of the West team, he tries very hard to make himself look proper and put together but usually fails. had a bad reputation going when he first started, because he was pretty sick and just Not Feeling Socializing, but it’s easy enough to see that he’s a good guy these days. a former bodyguard.
Lucas - the Techie, and originally from Sao Paulo. he loves sugar sweet coffee, and has a prosthetic leg that’s fueled by Intent and a rare mineral. a technical engineer, meaning he uses Intent to make new technological advances. can talk for hours if you hit a subject that he likes.
Deiter - the Doctor of West team. he’s a good man, though he tends to have extremely manic episodes that are not helped by the incredible amount of upper’s he can often be seen taking. lost everything when the city he lived in was blown up during WW2. fiercely protective of his team-mates.
James - known as the General of the team. fought in WW2. suffered a severe head injury that still affects him today. a kind man with a lot of personality, and a love for animals. if you tell him something, he will likely forget it. don’t hold it against him, because he’s already doing that himself.
-
Tony - the Runner and local loudmouth of North team. you cannot pay this boy to be quiet, and he’s both stupid as a bag of bricks and also incredibly intelligent. from New York, where he had a lovely stint robbing the Italian mafia blind with his husband, Rizzo, until they were both shot up and picked up by Adele.
Rizzo - the Demolitions Expert of North team, and actually pretty adorable if you can get past the fact that he’s incredibly crass and has no filter between mind and mouth. Hopelessly in love with his husband, even if no one else realizes they’re married. he will burn water if you let him cook, so maybe best if you don’t.
Werner - the North team’s Medic. he’s absolutely batshit, but has a good heart. was running a black market ring in the country side when Adele found him, though he was originally from Oslo. couldn’t speak anything but German and Norwegian before coming to work for the GSC. has two pet rats.
Francois - served as a spy in WW2, and currently the North team’s Assassin. has a HEART based injury with a lot of the same symptoms as tuberculosis. was picked up by the GSC with an offer of as-of-unheard of medication. sardonic, and prone to cracking jokes that most of his team don’t pick up on.
Loto - the Archer, and a member of North team. from the Louisiana bayous, and great with a cross bow. has an old coonhound that sleeps in bed with him, but who Loto claims to hate. often forgets that he needs to actually go to the kitchen and get food, and that the food he needs is easily available.
Braeburn - the Mechanic, and the longest running member of any of the active teams. has a prosthetic arm. really fond of sweet tea, and more idea of what’s going on than he’s willing to let on. bound up in so many contracts, it’s literally woven into his Intent.
-
Elias - the OG title, Soldier, and a member of South team. fought in WW2, where he briefly met Francois before being shipped to Poland. was discharged after being severely injured, and lived homeless on the streets for a while with BJ. originally from Canada but ended up in America during his discharge due to an error on his papers. suffers from brain tumors caused by extended exposure to Iradium in the war.
BJ - the Hurricane (class title will change, I just needed a placer, oops) of South team. left an abusive home at fifteen and has been on the streets since. took a contract with GSC to get Elias medical treatment. dyslexic, and often described by his team as “being a lot”. uses a steel pipe for his preferred weapon. loves talking and telling stories.
Olek - the Firepower of the team, literally. can probably punch you hard enough to get a KO, but fights with an Iradium powered flare-gun that does serious damage. from Russia, with a strict I won’t tell you anything about my past policy, and a bizarre fondness for bears. great at giving hugs when you’re down.
Jakob - the Maker of the team. has a highly advanced prosthetic eye. losing the vision in his other eye. the guy who picked up BJ and Elias. has a real morality struggle between the job he does, and his own views on Mercy. probably needs a hug more than he lets on.
-
Scout - the Scout of East team, and yes, he does think that’s funny. grew up the oldest of six kids, with a single mother. started doing deals behind the schoolhouse to bring in some extra cash, and it got out of hand when he got older. has severe ADHD. can and will count cards if you play poker with him. no common sense.
Jane - the Guard of East team. unofficially fought in WW2. a big softy, under all that gruffness. suffering from major hearing loss, and with the habit of virtually never taking off his helmet. a pretty shy guy, and any kindness sent his way will catch him off guard.
Christophe - the Spy of the team, he was drafted into the Korean War, where he served a grueling eight months before being attacked by military trained dog-horses and sent home. a chronic insomniac who never settled back into civilian life, and has an abysmally childish sense of humor.
Ollie - the Arsonist of the team, he was living homeless in Daytona before Seamus found him. has horrible decision making skills and a pretty rough past, and considers the base home near instantly. his self-care skills could use some boosting, and he tries really hard to not mess things up.
Seamus - technically the Gunner of the group, but he would rather just make a lot of bombs and use them instead. missing an eye, and has a lot of self-worth issues and a pretty heavy accent that his speech impediment doesn’t help. a drunk, but having Ollie around’s been proving to be good for him.

I put them both in one post.
I have a brother 10 years older than me and a younger brother and sister 5 and 7 years younger than me respectively. I call the older by his name, and also “dude” a lot. You know those twisty metal puzzles you have to figure out how to take apart or put back together, like puzzle rings and shit? He can do those in seconds without even thinking about it, like, idly while talking to you. He’s a daredevil bombs and blades tinkerer, and a practical joker. Once he told me he was getting out of the lake because it was noon and that’s when the sun shone straight down to the bottom and woke IT up, and then got out and snuck halfway around the lake to climb back in and swim up from underneath me to wrap a hand around my ankle and suddenly yank me down about ten feet at an angle toward the center of the lake. He went to jail for building a bomb, it’s a good thing they never found his other homemade weapons, like arrows with exploding tips, or the underslung potato gun mounted to the frame of his car. And I SAY potato gun but I saw him use his tester model to launch a wad of duct tape through a truck camper shell at the junk yard in the R&D phase, and he use to load it with a wad of something for batting topped by a snapple cap and a handfull of roofing nails and disintegrate mail boxes with it. He is a good wood sculptor and has a surprisingly delicate yet raw style when drawing with charcoal or graphite. He can take apart and put together almost anything. I could just write a whole book about his antics.
With my younger brother it’s mostly his name and “dude” quite often. Every once in a while, I will call him bro, or brother, but usually when I am low-key reinforcing our age difference. Like if he thought mom would react one way to something, but I had seen her reaction to that same thing before he was born or whatever, like, brother, I’ve known her longer. He is one of two people I know personally who may be legit geniuses. He used to play video games in the early 90′s by hacking their code and modding them - I’d walk in and he’d be 12 years old like “Instead of cannon balls, I made the cannon shoot cows that bounce around randomly a few times and explode, and I’m trying to make it so that each time a cow bounces, it spawns another bouncing cow bomb”. He has a… I want to say a Masters in Physics. His math teacher in high school tried to hold his interest by having him teach the first 15 minutes of each class. Once when the rest of us siblings were all standing around talking about sneaking out of the house, we asked if he ever did and he was like “why would I sneak out in the middle of the night… that’s when I sleep.” Now he’s a very mellow polyamorous hacker who brews his own beer and “isn’t allowed to tell you where I work, it’s so silly”
Our youngest I call by her name, and dude a fair amount, and a combination of the word sister and her name (like if her name was Brittany I would call her Sisttany) I do call her sister more than I use brother for my fraternals, but she calls us all brother quite a bit.  I think there are some complex reasons for that, but it boils down to her having been teased terribly and given a very hard time growing up by us, her brothers, who had a certain alliance against her. Of course by now we’re forced to admit that she is awesome and special and maybe the best of all of us. Certainly the coolest. Like, my younger brother is hella cool on paper, but when you’re in a room with him, he’s a little.. the only way he pulls it off is by truly not giving a fuck if people think he’s cool, which, as we all know, instantly awards coolness to whatever you’ve got going. On the other hand, when my sister is in a room, people laugh when she decides something is funny. Someone else is often making the decisions, but everyone only agrees to go along with them if sheagrees with them. She’s not wearing those clothes because they are cool, those clothes are cool because she’s wearing them, Once she worked at the same hotel I did for a while, and I asked her what she thought of it, and she said “I only ever want to work in a hotel again if I OWN it”. She was 19. She once knocked out her (now ex) boyfriend for forcefully taking his car keys away from her too roughly when he’d been drinking. He realized what he’d done too late to save him and she pulled him down from the fence he was climbing to get away from her so she could lay him out. She ran her own business for a while doing marketing stuff for publications and wineries and things, but she felt she was working too hard for the return she was seeing, and now she works for some firm overseeing the people who manage their social media or something.
And then there’s me, the Bard of the group, basically. I travel around on lots of adventures (I was arrested by the US airforce in Germany, I got stuck in England for a summer when they took my passport away from me at Heathrow - I stayed at a circus school with a few of the circus students who had no real home to go back to for the summer, and I put together a circus busking group with some of them and that’s how I made enough money to eat every day.) I used to write and produce full length comedies for the stage. I was SO sure I was going to be a con-artist, so I studied slight of hand and magic ( I ran a crooked poker game at recess) but as a young adult, when I picked my first pocket, I found I had no taste for stealing from real people (I’ll fuck up Coke any day, where’s Amazon’s pocket? Side note: I tapped the guy on his shoulder and handed his wallet back to him and said “I think you dropped this” and never picked a pocket again, but I can still do some pretty interesting stuff with cards and coins and things, Juggle knives and torches. that sort of stuff). Anyway, I adventure, and I write songs and stories, and my siblings mostly call me by my name, and very occasionally, dude. Also, my origins are steeped in mystery and my siblings are actually my cousins by blood, but that’s another story. Okay, here is that story.
My Grandmother was left-handed and the reason I love cooking and definitely some kind of Being. Her title was The Grandma. She had 4 great grandchildren by the time she died, and so her daughters became Grandma, but she was THE Grandma. She had this way about her, like she was incredibly present, but also paying attention to everything in the whole world. And then sometimes (notably when you fucked up) it was like she pulled her attention off all those things and put the whole thing on you; it was very unsettling. And she had the Voice, which she almost never used.
The last time Grandma traveled on an airplane with us, we were going though security and she couldn’t go through the metal detectors because by then she couldn’t get out of the wheelchair for longer than twenty seconds at a time. The TSA agent said she was going to search her or pat her down instead, and reached for my Grandmother. And Grandmother said, in the Voice
“Don’t touch The Grandma”
The TSA agent blinked and looked at grandma’s eldest daughter (a celtic witch if ever there was one) who merely shrugged and said “…don’t touch the grandma”.
TSAgent hesitated as if about to reach forward and insist, thought better of it, called TSA Supervisor over. TSA Supervisor explained everything to The Grandma - it’s just a quick pat-down, everybody who can’t go through the detectors has it done, they won’t even ask her to stand - and then reached forward to pat down my grandmother
“Don’t. Touch. The Grandma”
TSA Supervisor’s hands stopped as if hitting glass. She looked confusedly back and forth between the TSA agent and my grandmother for a second, and then the confusion left her face and she stepped aside, looked at the TSA agent and said “Don’t touch the Grandma” and waived us through security. They didn’t even scan the rest of us
It’s a shame she couldn’t fly anymore after that, she loved to fly; when her first husband died, she married P, a WW2 B52 crewman who taught her to pilot small planes, and they would fly up and down the coast to any cities they wanted to visit - she knew the West Coast in a way few people do.
One morning in the deserts of Nevada a year after P’s death she woke me up and said “get dressed, were going to into town to the casino; P visited me in a dream last night and told me I’d win a video poker jackpot with a royal flush today” and we drove into town so she could spend fifteen minutes playing video poker. I say fifteen minutes, because after fifteen minutes she hit her jackpot with a royal flush in hearts, and we went back home.
She used to sit in her chair in her living room with her back to the kitchen wall, and I’d go to leave the kitchen and I’d hear her from the other room “don’t you leave my kitchen mat like that” and I’d look over my shoulder at the mat in front of the sink, and sure enough, it would be all rumpled up; sorry grandma.
Grandma and I shared a birthmark, a red stain I won’t describe fully. And my grandmother and I were both adopted. Let me explain.
My Grandmother was adopted by a nice family.
And then that family all died, and she was adopted AGAIN.
She grew up and married a man whose Irish father I am named after: K, who came here from Ireland to work the Alaskan gold rush. She and her husband lived with his father K for a while, and this is a story about that:
Every Sunday. great grandpa K would go off on his own for a couple hours to “walk in the woods”. Grandma followed him one day. K walked into the woods, packed a pipe, sat down with his back to a tree, and took a small handful of nuts and seeds and fruits and leaves out of his shirt pocket. He scattered them around. Soon, as if expecting him, several animals came and helped themselves. The squirrels climbed all over him, on his head even. The raccoons sat in his lap. The birds sat on his knees and shoulders and in his beard and peered into his face. The deer checked his jacket for more snacks. After they hung out for about an hour, they all went on their way. Then K smoked his pipe and went home.
Grandma and K’s son had 5 kids.
One died as a child.
The eldest became an ER nurse and a savant witch. She would never admit she is a witch, but there’s a horseshoe over her door (not the front door, mind you, but the door she actually uses) and she’s the one who taught me to always leave a single spider in your house when you clean. She has a natural way with plants and animals -  the deer eat everything but her herb garden, which isn’t even fenced. This year one of them stayed in her backyard for nearly two months raising twins to be big enough to take back to the herd. She recognizes the individual squirrels and birds in her yard and knows their personalities and habits and things about their families. And of course as an ER and ICU nurse, she’s a hell of a healer.
The youngest was a witch, but sadly neglected, remained immature. Still, she had talents. She could fool people and make them laugh as easy as breathing, like some kind of glamour. Every long line of strangers she ever waited in became a party among friends. Could literally smell if you were lying to her. As in, she’d lean close and take a couple deep sniffs and then be like “Nope. Tell me, where did you really go after school?”
The only brother became a wandering holy man of sorts. Used to hitch-hike around the country in robes and junk, with a small, like, cult; then he quit them to just grow his own holy experience. He died in his 30s.
And the middle sister was my mother. She was double jointed and very dyslexic, and everyone says she was incredibly gifted in many ways. She did intricate artwork in ink, fractal gardens and faux woodgrain that was made of salvador dali faces, stuff like that. She was self taught on the piano, used to just walk up to a piano and play songs she made up on the spot that sounded how she was feeling and little crowds would gather. Made her own exercise equipment. Could pick up an accent within minutes and become semi-conversational in days. She had me with a half Japanese guy in the Air Force (he didn’t stick around). Then when I was about three, she sent me to live with her eldest sister, because her life got too, ah, interesting. Like, her partner had a hit put out on them. It wasn’t safe for me. By the time I was six it all caught up with her, and she died in an accident when she jumped out of the passenger side of a car and tried to run away as it stopped at a red light.
That’s when her eldest sister adopted me. The paperwork was messed up and my name is different on my birth certificate, my SS card, and my ID. Then, the person who filled out the “messed up” paperwork was fired, but I’m still a mystery to the bureaucratic world.
So here I am, same birthmark as my psychic grandmother, orphaned son of a savant creative criminal and a Japanese-American soldier, named after my Irish, gold hoarding, bearded, pipe-smoking beastmaster great-grandsire; raised by a celtic witch, hidden away from the official world. Sometimes I feel like all those hero origin stories are trying to call me out of hiding. More about my adventures soon.

Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City
Tumblr media
So far on this trip our British passports have got us in everywhere with little questions other than the occasional boarding card for the miserable immigration officials. This is often the case as we often have a visa exempt period, usually 30 days, without any further conditions. This changed in Vietnam as the visa exemption period was only 15 days, with the condition that you had onward travel booked prior to entry. If this was the case in other places, which is possible, it was never enforced. Despite having read this at the start of the trip, the late change in route and the fact that was over 2 months ago (crazy), meant we arrived at the airport woefully unprepared. Luckily budget flights and smartphones exist and we could book them within the 15 minutes the check in girl gave us.
However, this whole ordeal had put us in a bad mood. For the first time on the trip, we knew exactly what date we had to leave a country, where from and where we had to go to. The spontaneous plan as you go along (some would call unorganised/haphazard) aspect of the trip is something I’ve enjoyed the most. Nicole less so it must be said. But I’ve really loved the fact that I’m not sure what country I will be in in a weeks time. Odd maybe. Anyway, this decision also put the final nail in the Laos coffin, as the cheapest flights were to Cambodia. Therefore, any hope of finding a cheap coach/transport to Laos from Northern Vietnam was extinguished. So bad mood, and we hadn’t even boarded the plane in Thailand yet.
We landed in Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest, most populated and economic centre of Vietnam. Formally known as Saigon it was renamed after the national icon who represents a free, unified Vietnam, and holds a god-like status among Vietnamese people. It’s long to type out though so it’s just going to be HCMC for now. One thing that became very apparent on the bus from the airport to our hotel was there would be no motorbike rental here. The thought of it still makes me shiver. HCMC has a population of roughly 17 million, and we were told several times that there are more than 10 million motorbikes in the city. 10 million. The driving in Thailand was relatively civilised, they followed basic road rules eg. Traffic lights, stop signs etc. Here in HCMC it was anything but. Hands down the most insane driving we’ve seen ever. People text and play games on their phone, whilst driving through traffic in rush hour. This is bad in a car, but this means they have only one hand to accelerate, brake and beep, something they do almost every other second. We saw a woman breast feeding whilst riding pillion and people walking dogs whilst riding. Most bizarrely of all, a woman riding a scooter, whilst dragging a baby’s pram along with her foot and left hand. So definitely no motorbikes here.
HCMC was definitely not what we were expecting. I’m not sure what I was expecting really, but having been to Hanoi now (very behind on the blog) that’s more akin to what we had anticipated. In a way, HCMC out-Bangkok’ed Bangkok. I knew there was a major backpacking area with all the bars, cheap hostels and bar crawls that typify such areas. As the cheapest area of the city, this is where we stayed, just off Pham Ngu Lao which is HCMC’s answer to Khao San Road. It was madness. It had everything, other than the ping pong shows (thankfully), and was noisier and more in your face than Khao San. Having arrived late in the evening, we found a quieter bar, as we’re getting old like that, and then went off to bed.
Now Nicole hadn’t been feeling great for two days. It started as a bad sore throat on the day we went to the massive inflatable water park thing. In hindsight probably not the best place to go when getting ill, but she did it for me. Aw. But by the first full day in HCMC, she was full of flu and feverish. I had found a chemist and been sold so much flu medicine I could open my own pharmacy. Whilst that was partially dealing with some of the symptoms, given her rotten luck with illness, the amount she gets bitten and where we had been previously, we were seriously concerned she might have got dengue fever. It wasn’t worth chancing, so having done some googling we had found a hospital/medical practice and off we went. I’ve been fortunate to never have to experience private healthcare, so this was a first. But we were in and out with 1.5 hours with Nicole having had bloods done and cleared of dengue. Obviously very relieved, we could afford to laugh. She had been prescribed a nasal spray to clear the infection, which in boots cost like £5. However, with all fees, tests and medicine taken in to account, the same spray had cost us £240. Its all covered on the insurance so that’s not a worry.
I realise there’s an awful lot of text and not many pictures so far. I’m afraid that’s a bit of a theme. What with Nicole being ill and what we spent the rest of our time doing in HCMC, photos were either innapropriate or just not necessary. The French did leave some nice architecture behind from their colonial rule. So here’s us in front of the old post office (still actually a working post office) and Notre Dame cathedral.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rested up, the next day we went on a trip organised by the hotel to the Cu Chi tunnels. These were a set of tunnels used by the VietCong during the period of American military intervention in the late 60s. Whilst the war is probably what Vietnam is most famous for, it certainly isn’t obvious as an outsider looking in that it ever happened. A fact that is remarkable given the destruction it caused. That is excluding the countless museums and general displays of captured/shot down American tanks, aircraft and general war artefacts.
Tumblr media
Slight side note, but if anyone’s interested in the war in Vietnam I would 100% recommend watching a 10 part series on Netflix titled The Vietnam War. It chronicles events post WW2 which preceded American military intervention, then follows the brutal lunacy which ensued under the leadership of 6 American Presidents. It’s full on and certainly isn’t easy watching, but is definitely interesting and really makes you wonder how all this happened.
Anyway, these tunnels were used as part of the guerrilla tactics employed by the VietCong during the offensive in South Vietnam. Shockingly, in the Cu Chi area alone, over 10,000 American soldiers died. The tunnels themselves are part authentic and part recreations of old areas which had collapsed. However, as you walk through the complex you pass by countless craters left by bombs dropped during the war. Having watched that series it was an eye opening and sobering day, but interesting nonetheless. Like I said, given the amount of people that died there and nature of some of the stuff still at the tunnels we didn’t really take many pictures. It just didn’t feel right. Here’s a funny one of me dissapearing down a tunnel though. One thing is for sure, the VietCong certainly can’t have been claustrophobic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following day we went to the other main attraction in HCMC which is the war remnants museum. Along with an impressive collection of American guns, planes and tanks, the museums exhibits were even more graphic and mindblowing than at the tunnels the day before. Again, no pictures, not that you would even want to see this stuff.
With a little more time we would have liked to explore south of HCMC and take a boat trip down in to the Mekong Delta. However, now restricted by our plans, we had to move on. So it was back to the airport to get an internal flight north to Danang from which we would get a car to the old city of Hoi An. WAY too much text in this one, apologies. I will finish this one here and write a separate one for the other places.

Propaganda
Machiko Kyō (Rashomon, Floating Weeds, Older Brother Younger Sister)— Considered an early sex symbol in Japanese cinema. Also just an ethereal beauty who can also go feral/unhinged in a glorious way.
This is round 3 of the tournament.

Hello again.
Jeez this year has flown by. It’s April already. Have I even posted anything here this year? I can’t remember. I think the last thing I posted about was the Nova II X I’d just acquired. Anyway, I haven’t been skipping out on my usual synth-related shenanigans, although things have toned down a bit as I’m stuck in a Lazy Lima Bean kind of loop here.
Tumblr media
Here’s one of a few new friends, the JP-08. April 29th is a national holiday here in Japan, called Showa day. I’m sure I wrote a post about it here last year, so for detailed information please kindly direct your attention to that post. No, it’s cool, I’ll be here when you get back. Right, so now that you’re filled in regarding Showa day, and the annual Showa Techno event in Osaka, we can continue.
Where was I? Oh yeah, new friends. Yes. JP-08. Well, honestly it wasn’t my intent to get one of these at all. Implant4 had a JX-03 listed for a very good price, so I thought I’d head down and check it out. I’ve owned two JX-3Ps here, actually having two at the same time thanks to finding one in the maintenance room at work (I shit you not) that I was told was broken and on its way to the Big Trash Room but if I wanted it I could have it. Need you ask? It went home with me. I happened to have one already at the time. Anyway, for whatever reason I ended up selling them both (not at the same time). But I consider myself familiar with the synth and its capabilities and character. So, why did I want to check out the JX then? Last year’s Showa Techno was held in a venue that I’m sure I talked about in the post I directed you to earlier, but will briefly touch on as it’s quite important here. It was a pre-WW2 house in Osaka, in one of the very few small neighborhoods that escaped the inferno that Osaka became when firebombed. The house has been semi-renovated, and turned into a restaurant/bar/event space. The staircase leading up to the second floor is so steep, it’s more like climbing up a ladder than stairs (this is typical of older Japanese houses actually). I remember carrying gear up and down those stairs, and believe me it is something I’d rather not do again if at all possible. THUS my desire to use small, lightweight stuff for this year’s show, thus my interest in the JX.
Right. When I got to implant4, I saw that in addition to the JX-03, they had a stack of JP-08s (seriously, like 5 or 6 of ‘em). Hmmm. The owner of the shop said “try one out.” So I did. Keep in mind I went there with the image of the JX-3P in my head, so when I sat down and started fiddling with the JP, the experience was something like going into a beer shop to pick up a bottle of Guinness but discovering they also had a bottle or two of great craft-beer Russian Imperial Stout (like HUB “Motherland”, North Coast Brewing “Old Rasputin”, or even Prairie Artisan Ales “Bomb,” I highly recommend seeking these out by the way). Same general style, but way deeper and much more complex.
Let me get it out of the way that I’ve never touched a Jupiter-8, much less even seen one in the flesh. I have owned a Jupiter-6 though, and coincidentally the Jupiter-6 was the first analog poly I ever came into contact with back in about 1986ish. So, I have no idea how close the JP-08 is to the original. But, as I’m sure I’ve said many a time here, when you deal with old analog machines, you’ll get different results (to a certain degree of course) even A/Bing two of the same units side by side. Now, with all of that aside, I didn’t approach the JP-08 with that mindset. Rather, I dealt with it as just a synth I hadn’t used before, and set out to see what it could do. After maybe five minutes of noodling around, though, I was sold. The thing sounds fantastic! Ok, it only has one LFO, so that’s a bit of a limitation, but otherwise, there are enough parameters and options there that translate into having access to a very broad sonic palette, full of potential. It’s capable of your bread & butter Roland-esque stuff obviously, but with sync, and especially the cross mod (the cross mod!!!!), as well as the “Low Frequency” options on “VCO” 2 (they really shoulda gone with OSC instead of VCO, just nitpicking but still), yeah you can go from Nice Roland to WTF?! in no time. After spending a few days with it, and really getting to like the thing a whole lot, I thought a bit more about size and portability, and decided that having another of the boutiques wouldn’t be a bad idea.

BAAAAM! After a bit of auction and online shop sleuthing, I found a JU-06 for a good price. Now, I’ve owned every incarnation of the Juno series aside from the 60, so I would like to think I am familiar with what a Juno should sound like. Before biting the bullet on the JU-06, I checked out some demos, and the one that sealed the deal was the “Roland Boutique JU-06 noodle demo” by Ollilaboratories so have a look for that on YouTube. It’s just half an hour of a guy playing and programming, no talking, with HD video. After watching that, I was left with the exact same feeling I had after spending half an hour doing the same thing on the Juno-6 when I had it. The character, the mojo, the noisy chorus, it’s ALL there. And after the JU arrived, the experience was exactly the same. Honestly, I enjoyed playing the JU more than playing the Juno-106 I bought after selling the Juno-6 and thinking “Argh why the hell did I sell that thing?” It’s funny, even the color scheme of the JU-06 looks more like the Juno-6 than the 106 that it’s supposedly modeled after. In any case, it’s a damn good synth.
Way back when the boutique series was launched, I remember feeling sort of let down. “Why, Roland, why?” was what I thought. I mean, other manufacturers were releasing new, analog stuff, but here goes Roland, revisiting their past instead of looking into the future. And the units were minuscule, dinky little things that looked like toys. Four voice polyphony? Bah! Honestly, the only good thing I had to say about them was that maybe their release would bring down the ridiculous prices people were selling the originals for (that didn’t happen anyway). Now though, I feel almost ashamed for so offhandedly dismissing them the way I did. I’m not saying they’re perfect, though. The size can be a problem, especially for people with big hands or sausage fingers. They seem fairly robust, but I have doubts they’d survive a fall from a table or stand. And if used as-is, you really need to prop them up on something like an iPad stand from IKEA or whatever, as they don’t come in an enclosure like the TR-09 or TB-03. Nope, that’s available as the DK-01, something you’ll have to shell out another $60 or so for (grrrr). Four voice polyphony hasn’t really presented itself as such a huge (YUGE) problem, even though I sort of thought it would. And, it does seem that Roland IS listening to what people have to say, as they implemented MIDI CC control with a firmware update. Also, though none of them have arpeggiators, all of them have step sequencers, which are tons of fun and very easy to use. Both the JP and JU have built-in delay, and the JU has chorus (as does the JX). All in all, I’m quite impressed with these. Roland really did their homework. And, I’m really glad I won’t have to deal with lugging loads of heavy, old, fragile, temperamental, difficult-if-not-nearly-impossible-to-replace vintage gear up and down that goddam staircase!
