there are so many scenes i'd love to edit & share on tumblr but honestly that film hit me so hard even on the third watch that i've realised i shouldn't 😭😭 because if i spend hours on photoshop i'll ruin it for myself. no reason to post this really other than to say What a great film. i love rhrn & ghost with all my heart i'm so glad i'm around to live through this. lots of love to everyone else who felt it just as strongly as the first time around

2024 Watch List: Movie Edition

After what feels like a decade of not really watching any movies, I had a good movie year- 70 films, which is a little over a movie per week, mostly because I stuck to watching or rewatching older films. Went through most of Wong Kar Wai's filmography, which always leaves me dreamy and slightly perplexed and also a bit annoyed (complimentary); going bonkers over Interview with the Vampire S2 made me fall into French New Wave for a time- a longing to revisit Paris struck me enough to do something about renewing my passport- though naturally, it didn't improve my bank balance enough to think about actually visiting. Anyway, tbh, I was quite surprised that Hiroshima Mon Amour and Masculin Feminin, among others, are really all that. Sixty years later, Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall (2023) would have been my pick for best film at the Oscars- it made me want to return to watching movies in theatre.

Returned to the mothership (UK) via Merchant-Ivory productions and old British tv - Howard's End (1992) which I probably watched for the first time too early in my life, knocked me down and then took me out back and shot me in the head this time around. Maurice (1987) was everything Luca Guadagnino films aren't (y'all were just really flat out lying about Challengers being good); Heat & Dust (1983) made me a little angry, and also pushed me into reading A Passage to India (1924).

Closer home, Kim Jee-woon's weird and wonderful brain gave me Cobweb (2023), which was odd, stylish, darkly funny, and just an incredibly good film to watch some of Korea's top actors doing their thing (and some unexpected things- Jung Woo Sung's cameo, for example). Speaking of the new father (*sniggers meanly*) , I finally got to watch Kim Sung-su's era-defining "youth" film Beat (1997) and John Lee's A Moment to Remember (2004), two films that have defined Jung's career- loved the former, despite the bleak ending, and about half of the latter; it was at its best when it was being unselfconsciously horny- the sharp left into melo territory left me unmoved. It's crazy to me that it's Jung Woo-sung who keeps getting asked to re enact the "If you drink this, we're dating" dialogue for like twenty years, when that scene- and the movie- really belong to the luminous Son Ye jin. Shout out also to director Kim Sung-su's 12:12 The Day/ Seoul Spring(2023), a fictional retelling of the 1979 coup by Chun Doo-hwan which was oddly prescient about Events (TM) of December 2024 to the point where I actually said aloud- wait, I just saw this in a movie.

Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster (2023) is a perfect film, 10/10 no notes; and I wept buckets watching Shoplifters (2018), but found Airdoll (2009) a bit icky, despite a bravura performance from the great Bae Doona. Andrew Haigh's All of Us Strangers (2023) was another film that had me crying- and it didn't surprise me later to find out that it was based on a Japanese novel by Taichi Yamada. There's just something about how Asian storytelling uses the supernatural that is easily identifiable, even when situated in a different culture.

Moonstruck (1987) turned out to be the rom com of the year for me- just PERFECT, god, imagine Hollywood used to know how to make romances????

Malayalam cinema continues to be the only Indian cinema worth watching (I said what I said): Kaathal: The Core (2023) and Thallumaala (2022) are very different films thematically and stylistically, and give you some idea of the range of what's on offer there, while the bigger Hindi/Telugu cinema industries continue to churn out headache inducing, morally and artistically bankrupt mega-hits. They're not the only ones, of course- why on earth does Emerald Fennell get to make movies, y'all? Saltburn (2023) was trash. Poor Things (2023) was even worse, if that were possible. And yet, I'm told we're going to get treated to MORE of the same. Love yourselves, guys, please.

I'm not sure what I'm looking forward to movie-wise next year, but I do hope to continue rediscovering the joy of cinema. Anyway, what've you all been watching this year? Tell me in the notes/ link me to your posts!

911 Lone Star Found Family

1)What is your favorite 911 Lone Star Found Family Moment?

It is so incredibly difficult for me to choose just one moment but if I had to, it would be TK trying to saving Marjan in 1x03. I'm choosing this one because even though we don't see as much of TK and Marjan's friendship as I wish we did, the idea of them is very close to my heart. I got introduced the show way back when it was first released by my bestie who is so much like TK that it's a running joke that TK was created especially for him. While I am not exactly like Marjan, I am a badass Muslim woman so I am the Marjan to my bestie's TK. And that moment I picked that moment in 1x03 because at that point, TK and Marjan didn't even really know each other that well yet TK was willing to risk his life to save her.

2)Which platonic pairing/friendship dynamic are you most looking forward too seeing again in season?

See answer above. TK and Marjan's friendship is really important to me. Aside from what I mentioned above, I love to think about how Marjan went from being treated as a prop at her former place to show everyone how woke they were to being respected and cherished as an important part of the team and a family member. As a side note, this is why as a Muslim woman myself, I like how Owen bringing Marjan (and everyone else on the team) isn't treated as something that he's doing to save them but rather is him almost inadvertently bringing together a family. He doesn't treat any of them as damsels who need him to save them whether they ask for it or not, he treats them like family that you help no matter what because you love them. And Marjan obviously picked up on it despite her initial reservations precisely because she wasn't looking for a savior and that's why she was so adamant to bring the firehouse back in season. All that said, I think TK and Marjan have a lot in common with the way they have been treated in the past regarding their job. Marjan was treated as a prop to get woke points and was constantly being underestimated and held back. TK was used to feeling like he had to constantly prove himself not only because he felt people looked down on him for being the captain's son but also because he, like so many others with any kind of mental illness, felt like he needed to prove people wrong constantly as validation that he is worth something. But then they found each other and I have loved that little moment during Marjan's interview in the pilot where TK looks up at her and smiles. You can tell he feels he has found a kindred spirit.

3)If you could pick one Lone Star character to be friends with, who would you choose?

Well since I already have a TK in my life, I'm just going to go with that. My TK (though that's not his name lol) is so important to me and my life would not be the same without him. It certainly would not be as good.

4)Which would you rather attend: Catan night at the loft or game night at the Ryders?

Now this is a tough choice because I have never played Catan but I love charades. However, I am going with Catan night purely because I love seeing them all in their group and I would love to spent time in that loft.

5)A character of your choice ends up in jail. Who would they call to bail them out (assuming their romantic partner, parent, and/or child didn't pick up)?

Carlos tbh because we've seen that he has no problem bailing his friends (or indeed his soulmate who had just rejected him) out of jail. Also, I just want to sit in a car with him while he's in uniform.

Anyway, all of this is meant to say that I adore TK and Marjan together because to me it feels like watching my bestie and myself onscreen. I would not have even known about the show without him and even though he is not really participating in fandom anymore for his own reasons, it is still a ritual for us to watch the show together and talk about it.

I know that I was late in responding to this but work has been a bitch lately (why oh why does real life have to be a thing?!) and I have no idea who has already participated or wants to participate. I am also really shy about tagging people so I will make this an open tag and I hope anyone who wants to participate will feel welcome to do so. Okay I just back home and let me share my experiences while those are fresh. :)

It was a decent weekend as a Merc fan. I met so much common fans which was so good feeling. But mostly orange army and Ferrari fans were there. Tbh in Hungary Ferrari has been the most popular for decades. Everybody was so nice, I didn’t experienced any atrocity or bully. All the 3 days the Dutchies were the first drunk people but they were funny actually. :D Singing and laughing.

I thought about I will buy general admission ticket for next year bc it is cheaper but… this tribune I sat now is definitely worth it. If you wanna come here once I suggest Gold 1 tribune with my warm heart. You can see the whole grid and T14, you can see the “ant farm” minutes before the race, the checkered flag and podium, interviews etc. But the Pit Exit tribune and Gold 3 are great as well. You can see the green lights out and T1.

About Lewis.

Unfortunately I couldn’t give him my gift but it’s okay I’m not disappoint. I could see him in the fanzone from head to toe, he was so small and kind his voice is even softer irl. Next year I’ll try harder. As I said above I sat in G1 and I got my seat in A sector which was literally next to the Super Gold tribune. So the first line was in front of my nose and I saw T14 so everytime I saw him in the turn I yelled “go baby PUSH IT” like crazy. 😀 Friday was not our day but yesterday during FP3 we thought Merc was cooking. And indeed ☺️ Never ever in my whole life forget when he went across the finish line and his name on the screen jumped to the first place. The whole sector and the super gold next to me was exploded like if there were a hurricane. Not even merc fans jumped like crazy, a ferrari boy next to me yelled “finally its not verstappen!!!” 😀 It was an amazing afternoon. I cried and my throat was gone. And when he got out of the car and stood on the tyre… lift his little fists towards us it was… undescribable. There are no words to explain how much my hands shaked.

Ofc I realistic and I knew he couldn’t keep this first place for long but actually I secretly hope podium. :) But anyway, he did everything and he were closer and closer to Checo laps to laps but sadly there were no enough laps. I watched his interviews on my way back home and he was so tired and he spoke so fast. When he speaks like this fast its never a good thing.. 😐 But I even think it is a good result and sadly this w14 can’t do more.

I’m so proud of him and I am prouder everyday as a fan of him. I don’t care the haters bc I’m better than them and he is better than them!!!!

Media-wise I guess Loki Season 2, The Marvels, watching Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake 2 cutscenes on YouTube are all things that'll be fun for like reacting and chatting to peoples about-- still not sure Metal Gear collection is worth money--

I know that there's a podcast episode coming up where Secret Subject is gonna interview my girlfriend so I'm buzzing to see when that is released and I just wanna subscribe to the podcast and listen every week anyways?

Otherwise I really dunno? I'm not super good at thinking forward-- scheming and planning isn't my thing <3

Like I don't think we're doing anything outside of the house after Obvious Things until Charmed-- I dunno if we have to make preparations for things like Dual Inductions or Presence 2.0 but if that happens I'm looking forward to it

Holiday gift season is a stress tbh as I have no idea how to approach it yet-- like I'll manage and try to make smiles and love happen but it's too big and too far away atm

So I dunno-- I am looking forward to every date night with all my partners-- every stream-- every time I get to gush about a fixation topic-- every coffee in the morning with Copper-- every time we post a new thing on Tumblr that Does Numbers(tm)

The Magic School Jeep takes place a little over a decade after the original events of Ride the Cyclone. It follows the story of Savannah and five other strangers who just so happened to be in the same tragic road accident. Post-revival, Savannah still has ghosts of the past (and the present) haunting her. How will she deal with going from feeling as if she knows nothing, to suddenly feeling like she knows too much?

We’re also given the chance to explore the eventful lives and interpersonal issues of a whole new cast of characters, each carrying their own form of emotional baggage. 

Join them on a jeepney journey through space as they recount their lives through detailed flashbacks, touching heart-to-hearts, and a healthy-ish amount of trauma dumping. <3

By the end, they’re faced with the same dilemma. Who do they bring back? 

What will they do once presented with this decision? Why does it feel like there’s something (or someone) watching and waiting in the wings? How does this game of life and death really work? Is it worth it, in the end?

All these questions we hope to answer in a story about acceptance and healing, with a dash of humor and a sprinkling of queerness (as all narratives should have) (it's. way more than a sprinkling tbh. it's like a whole truckload of queerness). Thank you for indulging us in this already extremely self-indulgent story! We are cringe, but we are free.

Oh! Well, I don't know if this is a keepsake? But ever since I was around seven, I've carried around this little tote bag. It has all the essentials— water, first aid, stuff like that. I'll level with you I really didn't care for mid season 1 Yennefer, she got on my nerves. I did not like her and geralts relationship (it was bad for both of them tbh, geralts coming out looking worse though by far). The thing is though yennefer's scenes with Jaskier this season were so good, they're really cute and FUNNY together. THEY HAVE ACTUAL CHEMISTRY!!! As buds AND as a couple! i normally ship geraskier but show geralt can take a long walk off of a short pier. Yenskier's growing on me

oh man I definitely have Opinions about it. (Future Raps note: this got too long and it's twn critical, so it's going under a Read More fdkjgdf)

I also didnt like Yen on 1st watch, but I did on my 2nd, and I think it has a lot to do with the timeline issue. She had a BIG change of heart from 1 episode to the next, and they tell us it's cause she's spent decades in court and realized it's not what she wanted but we as the audience dont get to SEE or FEEL that change. She later wants a kid, and a casual viewer feels like just an hour ago she was ok with giving that up to gain power, it was a choice she made and it's so weird that she regretted that (in what FEELS like) immediately after and seems to be blaming other people for it.

more understanding of the chartacter helps get her motivations better, but i think she suffered the Too Much Info in Too Little Time curse, and also from the fact that the writers love to say a lot but show very little. Sometimes they won't even say it ON the show!! They'll say it on a tweet or an interview! This makes me extremely angry, if you can't tell!!!

Yen/Geralt suffers from the same, tbh. Even worse, the push for the relationship works to the detriment of Yennefer as a character imo. In s1 we're supposed to see them as this epic tragic love story, but again we are just TOLD that a long time happened in between eps 5 and 6. We are TOLD that they're bad for each other. We see some fucking FLASHBACKS in 2 minutes, with a voice over of them explaining how they felt so bad whenever they woke up and the other was gone. It's bullshit and most people didnt get it! That's why you get 10000 fics believing that this was only the 2nd time they met and it was only a couple months later. Cause that's not how you tell a story.

And THEN we have their reunion in s2, which i still think was terrible writing. It makes sense from Geralt's pov, cause he thought she was dead, but yennefer never thought that. FDJKGNDF yen didnt even THINK about him much unless someone else mentioned him!! And when she did she was mad and hurt! WHAT'S THAT "how is this possible?" LINE, it makes no sense. Their problem wasn't solved. Geralt doesnt even fucking apologize, they dont TALK about it.

So yeah it makes no sense for her character, but it DOES make sense for PLOT PURPOSES. They needed them to be together and happy and show them with Ciri as the Happy Family they could be, so the "betrayal" would hurt more.

It also totally ruins what could've been an interesting progression of Yen's character. You know. I am working my way through his filmography as well tbh, so my advice might not be the best hahaha however I'm still going to give my personal faves <3 I haven’t gotten around much of young Cruise’s roles, as I am an old man loving kinda gal. I will watch them eventually (Have seen a few like Risky Business and Cocktail tho)!!! So yeah this little list will be mostly old man Cruise.

Note after making the list: I guess those 5 movies are my favourite Cruise movies so far (not counting the Mission Impossible saga)!

Knight and Day (2010)

A wonderful duo with Cameron Diaz!! 

I wouldn’t say Knight and Day is the best Cruise movie but honestly it is my favourite Cruise movie. I’d say it’s an easy movie to introduce Tom Cruise to someone who doesn’t like him that much. It’s just sooo funny and Tom’s character is adorable, I love Roy so much!! ♥ I love the overly trained, deadly kind of characters, and Roy checks that out beautifully with a lot of bonus humor and kindness. He’s so earnest throughout the whole movie, idk he’s just super cute!! ALSO IF YOU’RE FRENCH (or are learning French, or whatever if you’re interested in French) PLEASE PLEASE WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH THE FRENCH DUB, IT’S SOOOO GOOD. Cameron and Diaz’s VAs are always amazing and they DELIVERRRRRR SO WELL in this as well!! I always watch this movie with the French dub, it’s even funnier than the original imo jjggjnh

Collateral (2004)

Amazing. This has rewired my brain. Once again the overly trained character kind, but in such a different and opposite way to Roy. It’s so interesting to see Cruise in such a cold and deadly role, the way he speaks, the way he moves... the SALT AND PEPPER HAIR AND BEARD UUUGHH that’s all right up my alleeeeeyyyy!!!! He’s just a little feral dude ♥ You’ll get to see Vincent break down a little throughout the movie and honestly what’s not to love about a cold, emotionless hitman lamenting about people’s indifference? Great movie!!! I have so much more to say about it but i will shut up now.

Oblivion (2013)

Honestly this movie is worth it just for the amazing, amazing scenery and OST. Like what the hell? The music has punched my breath away so many times!! Also Tom is super cute as Harper so what’s not to love? Spent the whole time watching it wondering what the FUCK was going on!!!!! ♥ but it all unfolds at one point so it’s alright! I really loved this one aaa ALSO I LOVE SCIFI LET’S GOOO

The Last Samurai (2003)

I mean. That LOOK. Long hair and beard? sign me the FUCK UP!!!! Amazing music by Hans Zimmer, amazing actors, KEN WATANABE IS THERE!!! I love Ken Watanabe!! I haven’t seen this movie in YEARS but guess what, making this gif made me want to watch it again so i’ll do it TONIGHT. Truly it is a must-watch of Tom Cruise’s filmography. Seeing this character find peace and something worth living and fighting for while discovering a culture so different from his own and trying his very best to try and learn... :’( also he’s great with kids and that’s jussstttt my thing /)w(\

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

The look? Immaculate once again. Gay vibes? Honey they aren’t even vibes anymore, they are those full blown bass boosted shit that make everything shake and quake!!!! I love that role even more since i learned that the author behind Interview with the Vampire really didn’t like the idea of Tom playing Lestat, they did it anyway. However after watching the movie she was like “I have to publicly apologize to this man, he understood Lestat perfectly.” GIRL YOU KNOW WHAT, ME TOO. I was hesitant about watching this cuz...Vampire Cruise?? can he pull it off?? LET ME TELL YOU HE FUCKING CAN ALRIGHT. Really his Lestat is so freaking good it’s insane, I love him so much, I was only interested in HIM!!! Give me more Lestat!!!!!

Those are the ones I personally recommend. I wanted to put Jack Reacher (2012+2016) in here too because it’s once again the overly trained man trope that I love, but there are already two of them in this list so I think it’s enough!

I hope I’m not too bland and/or classic with my personal recs, it’s just that I love those movies to bits and I’m more likely to watch those more than once to analyze or have a good time!

I think overall all Cruise movies are worth watching! He has played a lot of different and interesting roles, it’d be a shame to ignore some of them. I’m thinking about Born on the Fourth of July for example, that’s such an amazing and heartwrenching performance. The man can be a lot of things.

This is one of my favourite like old WWII style songs, I just think it’s beautiful and really great to dance slow to (at some point in my life I will dance with my husband or wife to this song in our little kitchen, and then my life will finally be complete). It’s in Doctor Who (in The Empty Child) and Jack and Rose dance to it in front of Big Ben, like it’s a really great scene in one of the best episodes of Dr Who ever. So good and a great WWII song.

Yes, I know this is about Katya’s issues and everything that happened with that but like it is also like very accurate to the Captain’s arc. Like “soldier, take your time” is like yeah?? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t believe the Captain is even remotely aware of the fact he’s gay cause like I don’t reckon he understands love or the fact that he’s got feelings like that, I don’t think he knows so yeah take your time to figure it out yeah, Captain.

We’ll Meet Again - Vera Lynn

This song seems to have taken a new meaning in pandemic times but Havers leaving Button House and (I assume) never returning but like the Captain staying at Button House completely in the dark as to what happened to Havers and therefore living with the possibility of Havers returning.

HEAVEN - Troye Sivan & Betty Who

Obviousssss, but this song was such an integral part in me figuring shit out about my life. Like, I was 14 and a massive Troye fan when it came out and (growing up in a working class, strict religious, small town family) the music video was literally my first understanding of the fight for queer rights. I knew about LGBTQ+ identities and identified as a variety of queer labels at the time I was completely unaware of the entire struggle that had come before me and seeing photos and footage of this fight for the first time was O.o Anyway, I'll stop talking about myself and say that I’m incredibly happy with the hc of the Captain trying to learn a bit more about queer history in his journey to accept himself.

This might actually kill his gay little soul but by good it would be worth it!! I’m gonna go off on a bit of a philosophy tangent but what were ya expecting from me honestly: the sample used in Achilles Come Down is an extract from a 1942 essay by Albert Camus who, alongside Kierkegaard and Nietzsche and the like, wrote about the concept of ‘the absurd’ which is a tricky concept but a reallyyyyyy simplified version of it is basically the idea that humans constantly search for a meaning and purpose for life and the universe but the universe does not provide answers to that which causes human distress. Basically, what I mean to say like isn’t that concept just so Captain?? Like he searches for meaning in war and can’t see life beyond the war because that provides him purpose, you know?? The Captain’s name is Teddy, I take no debate on this. Just the idea of the Captain’s backstory, like a childhood backstory for the Captain genuinely makes me cry. I know a lot of people have shared their stories of their interpretation of the Captain’s childhood and they’re all sad and I love them all :’) (Specifically a big fan of Operation Keep Calm on AO3 and what they’ve done with the Captain’s character and story, 10/10 would recommend but it’s not finished and I really hope it is at some point ily).

Aww I’m honored! I’m not sure about writing more for Clay tbh. Writing fanfic for real people can be weird sometimes. Like writing for Jack, who is a famous person, I can see him like any other character and “research”. Whereas with non-RPF fanfic I can research by reading more of a book series or watching more fictional content, for RPF, research takes the form of watching interviews/following his social media. No one has to do any of this yo write, of course, but I like to make it feel kinda believable and Jack being famous makes it feel less weird. (Granted, I know this is exactly why RPF and Y/N fanfics get a lot of crap sometimes and I think as long as no one is being harassed or harmed with the fics, then it is just a creative outlet.)

But since Clay is only kinda famous, it feels super weird researching him so I kinda made up a character and used his name to avoid creeping on him lol. But to write more for him I feel like I would have to dig into his personal life and it’s like hmm, that feels too far 😂 In short, I’m on the fence but leaning towards unlikely.

Gretchen's experiment is unsociological, actually

I'll try to explain to the best of my ability why Gretchen's experiment feels so off. Spoilers: it's because it's dumb af and could never have happened in real life. Let's begin!

Before anything, I would like to state that yeah, I'm aware that Gretchen's experiment is meant to be flawed because she's a villain, and the show wants to drive the point home. Were there subtler ways to do it without making her completely idiotic? Maybe. But I would have accepted it if the show hadn't try to pass this experiment as sociological, when it just... isn't.

Why the experiment couldn't have happened in real life:

- the funding: it's well known: getting grants to fund your research project is hell, especially in humanities or social science, where private investors can't make money on your results lol. So Gretchen being able to conduct not one, but probably two experiments on an island? excuse me while I laugh

ok to be fair, the funding is kinda explained: she obviously managed to convince private investors (but even that isn't really explained yet like... what did she promise them? that the results would be good for them? that they could use the results for their own interest? <== all of these are unsociological. you can't predict the results and absolutely can't convince someone of what results you're gonna get before the experiment even starts wtf).

- the ethics: like we all know this shit isn't legal anyway, but let's pretend it is for a minute. Is it ethical? the answer couldn't be more obvious. Why is it important in the sociological field though? Ethics in science has been an ongoing issue: how to treat the test subjects obviously, but also how people could use the results your research produces (hi Oppenheimer!). Among social science and humanities disciplines, sociological studies (and psychological studies) are more likely to be unethical, because you're directly studying humans and human interactions.

More and more ethical committees are created in universities and you can be sure that Gretchen's experiment wouldn't have been approved (is it why she's been fired in the first place?). Actually, having Gretchen be independant from any university kinda helps to remove the ethical question from the equation: she doesn't have to be approved by her peers ==> she can do all the unethical shit she wants and hurts young girls. great.

That being said, and because sociological studies are at risk of being unethical, we learn pretty early on how to make our studies ethical. the first rule being: you have to inform the participants in the study that they're being studied lol. you can't just go behind their back and do everything you want. And yeah, it can make them more suspicious and their behavior may change, but if you're a good sociologist, this is something you can analyze! First rule of sociology: everything is worth noticing. And after a while (or if your poll has a lot of respondents), the discrepencies disappear anyway. Also a very important thing: as a researcher, you're not here to help people or make them feel better (or worse for that matter), you're here to observe and draw conclusions. You have to try and have as little influence on the experiment as possible.

obviously, Gretchen failed all those rules. The "they're on their own" speech doesn't hold up because she influenced the study from the start by choosing the girls, which leads us to...

- the sample: this is probably the dumbest thing in the experiment lmao. Because... what is Gretchen trying to prove? that women are essentially better rulers than men or can create a better society if they're left by themselves (feel free to correct me on this one. my brain mysteriously shut down each time Gretchen started to talk). For one, removing girls from a patriarchal society won't make them forget what's been ingrained in them for years and how society has built them to begin with. As teenage girls, the unsinkable 8 have already suffered from primary (their family) AND secondary socialization (school, friends etc.) Their behavior, personality and aspiration in life have been altered by society, and we actually see it in the show! Removing them now and acting like what they're doing is in no way linked to the way society shaped them is???? astounding.

Side note but a scientifically better (but even more horrific) experiment would have been a group of girls, separated from the rest of society at birth, with the unsinkable 8 as a group control.

Even more ridiculous than that: Gretchen is trying to prove this... with 8 american girls... who obviously haven't been chosen at random... like... there's no way a real sociologist would do this. We learn in first year that we need to choose our analysis tools and our samples based on what we want to analyze. You want to analyze how patriarchy affect women and want to universalize your result? You can't choose qualitative tools, you'll have to use quantitative analysis lmao. And with a big fucking sample at that, a sample chosen randomly to display sub-groups if you want it to be representative. I'm talking thousands of people if it's only US centric. 8 fucking girls lol, give me a break.

To be fair, qualitative and quantitative works often complete each other, but Gretchen never mentions any quantitative analysis so I will take this as just another proof of her incompetence.

- Gretchen's theory: her theory itself is unsociological. It sounds a lot like essentialism which is... the opposite of sociology. Sociologists try to find social explanations (and not psychological or biophysical reasons) to an event or a behavior.

As stated, sociologists rarely try to prove things. They observe a phenomenon and ask themselves what could have caused it. One of the first things to do before a study is actually listing all the biases you could have about the subject (Durkheim's "prénotions") and letting them go or at least be aware of them so it won't hinder the results you could potentially find. The observation must be as impartial and non-judgemental as possible. In the show, Gretchen's prénotions are in full play: we live in a patriarchal society (this one is true, but you have to question it all the same), and women are better leaders than men. ==> unsociological

Again, I would have found the experiment part annoying but wouldn't have complained too much if the writers hadn't made it clear that they were trying to portray a sociological experiment lol. It was confirmed in an interview and the "field notes" are pretty telling. Actually, the field notes are a better sociological study than Gretchen's experiment, how sad. Beyond that, the method used by the characters in the show is also inspired by the sociological method:

- (so called) passive observation with the team watching and monitoring the girls from afar (but the team is still interfering so...)

- direct participative observation in Jeanette's case: you observe and take field notes while being immersed in the subjects' environement. Nora is doing this too actually: she's writing clear social facts in her notebook. "No one's cried for a while. No one even seems that afraid anymore. Still, it's been healing for some." This is sociological

- semi structured interviews in the bunker. They're probably the most sociological part of the experiment tbh. Ironic considering Faber is a psychologist but whatever. Toni's interview is the most representative of what a semi structured sociological interview looks like: the non-judgemental questions ("Why does seeing that make you smile?"), the follow-ups when the answer is unclear or could be more precise ("I'm wondering if you can expand on "cocktease"?"), the specific questions on what a subject thinks of a specific event and why they're thinking it in the first place without making assumptions ("Were any of you alarmed by Leah's behavior?"). It doesn't last long. When Toni answers evasively and doesn't cooperate, Faber drops the sociology charade: "It sounds to me like it was a pretty unsettling loss of control" lololol. neutrality who? You can also point out that something the subject said is at odds with something usually accepted, to better understand how they justify it (like when Faber says that Toni's "alone is safer" is not "the conventional wisdom"). All of this is sociological. Too bad the experiment is not. This interview is also a far cry from what Faber is doing to Leah in episode 6 (and there's 0 value to the "data" he pulled actually, sorry Gretchen).

- the fucking control group. It is a sociological tool. I know for a fact it won't be used well, for the same reasons the sample was a joke.

I don't know, I find it frustrating that the show is clearly trying to show Gretchen's experiment as flawed, while keeping a veneer of scientificity to hide behind. Gretchen is not, and could never be a sociologist,.

i've never liked slasher movies I feel like they tend 2 be similar without having much plot meaning to chew on BUT I also might just not have seen one I like yet?? maybe my idea of what a slasher movie IS is too small bc I enjoyed It Follows and that's arguably a slasher? got thoughts on that

tbh i am not a huge slasher fan myself but ive found myself appreciating them more recently just because ive been watching/reading/listening to a lot of horror film analysis stuff and its given me a sorta new perspective. i think slashers have like a specific place in pop culture that has to do with the historical cultural context they came to be in.

one of the reasons horror is such a fascinating genre to me is because examining fear is something thats both very intimate and gives you a glimpse of the bigger picture, the fears and values of the people who make it and the time and place and culture that inspires them. the most iconic slasher films (stuff like halloween, texas chainsaw, sleepaway camp, basically just serial killer teen screams from the 70s-80s) do this job very effectively.

i think theyre classic in the way a lot of not actually very good books are classic ya know? theyre often very formulaic and seem to be lacking deeper substance, true, but that formula creates space for people to twist and transcend it, and that forms the framework for the way a lot of horror fans come to process other content. theyve got their own kinda specific weird culture to them and i think thats something worth like appreciating even if, looking at them as a modern viewer, they seem kind of weird and shlocky (and woman-hatey.... and sex-shamey... etc).

and like you said! there are these sorta modern slashers too now! i ended up watching the first three halloween movies for the first time because i saw an interview with jordan peele where he talked about the michael myers character. it follows in particular i feel is like, the modern answer to 70s horrors big issue with sex-and-violence. i dont think you really have to go back and watch the oldies to get a perspective on that, but i think once youve seen more movies you actually like that take that influence you might come to appreciate them in a way similar to the nostalgia experienced by those whove been fans from the beginning.

thats just me tho! sorry to go off on a whole thing! anyway dont read all that just try out a variety of movies and try to pick out what works for you and what doesnt and itll lead you to start recognizing patterns and being better able to pick out stuff that resonates with you. yeah, uh. yeah.
