VAMOS’ Cardona Sports, Health, and Education Center project was selected for entry in the WAN Awards

The Cardona Sports and Health-Education Centre presents an integrated model of health education that seeks to create synergies between sports, health, and education initiatives that will help to create a culture of health in the Catalan village of Cardona.

The Project is located in Cardona, Spain, a former salt-mining town of 5,000 inhabitants one hour Northwest of Barcelona. VAMOS has been involved in the project since its inception, alongside the mayor and different sectors of the municipal government, a private science foundation, and a development team.

The Field House for Active Living building comprises Phase 1 of the Health + Urbanism Master Plan for Cardona and is currently under construction. Multi-purpose learning and fitness spaces, a bar, and locker rooms, comprise the program of the new 20,000 sf community centre and athletic field. A large “front porch” fronting the athletic field is the central gathering hub of the complex, meant to address the social aspects that are so important to healthy living and fitness. It has been well-established in the scientific community that the most effective strategy to tackle the global epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease is at the local scale and using an approach that addresses medical, policy, physical, social, and behavioral issues that are at the core of combating the disease. In this way, this project establishes a small scale model with global relevance.
