Ricky Martin - María (Pablo Flores remix) 1995

"María" is a song recorded by Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin for his third studio album, A Medio Vivir (1995), and was released as the second single from the album on November 21, 1995. Musically, "María" is a Spanish-language flamenco, dance, and salsa song, featuring elements of mariachi, samba, cumbia, Latin, African, Caribbean, and Latin pop. On the remix, Puerto Rican DJ Pablo Flores upped the tempo and the sex appeal of the song, turning the slow-burn flamenco laced track into an up-tempo samba tune in a house bassline. The remix version became more popular than the original one. "María" became Martin's breakthrough song and his first international hit. It topped the charts in 20 countries, and has sold over five million physical copies worldwide. As a result, the song was featured in the 1999 edition of The Guinness Book of Records as the biggest Latin hit. It was also the Song of the Summer in Spain in 1996 and was the second best-selling single in the world that year.

In Australia, "María" spent six weeks at number one. It topped the country's year-end chart in 1998, and was certified platinum. The song topped the Ultratop Wallonia chart of Belgium for 10 consecutive weeks and was certified double platinum. It spent nine weeks at number one in France and was certified diamond. It went number one in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. In the US, "María" peaked at number six on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart, giving Martin his fifth top 10 hit. The song also reached numbers two and eight on the US Latin Pop Songs and Tropical/Salsa charts, respectively. The first accompanying music videos for the original song and Pablo Flores remix were filmed in La Boca, a barrio of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Following "(Un, Dos, Tres) María"'s success in France, a re-made version of the video for the Pablo Flores remix was filmed in Paris and aired in 1998.

Although Martin was satisfied with the track and he describes it as a song that he is "extremely proud of", the first time he played it for a record label executive, the man said: "Are you crazy? You have ruined your career! I can't believe you are showing me this. You're finished — this is going to be your last album." In an interview with Rolling Stone, he told the magazine that "everybody got scared. They said, 'What are you doing? This is the end of your career. […] You do ballads, and now you're doing Latin sounds. The album is not going to work.'"

In 2018, Cadena Dial hailed the song as the most famous song of the last 24 years. In the same year, Rolling Stone ranked "María (Pablo Flores Remix)" as the 27th Greatest Latin Pop Song of All Time. Also, according to ABC, "María" was voted the favorite song of the summer of all time in Spain, based on a study in 2011. Amazon Music ranked the track as the 31st best-ever Latin hit. It was recognized as one of the best-performing songs of the year at the 1997 BMI Latin Awards. "María" was the main theme of the Brazilian telenovela Salsa e Merengue (1996–1997). The song is available on the main setlist for the dance video game Just Dance 2014. "María (Pablo Flores Spanglish Radio Edit)" was featured in the American animated comedy film Despicable Me 3 (2017).

Updated 100 Memorable Skating Programs

Back in 2018, I created the original version of this list. (You can find the master post here.) Since 2024 marks my 30th year as an official fan of figure skating and there have been some more great programs created since the last time, I thought it was about time to update the list in honor of World Ice Skating Day. Same rules apply as last time:

Only senior competitive programs starting from the 1993-1994 season are eligible, since that's the first season I really started watching figure skating.

Each skater may only be listed once, unless a partner/discipline switch is involved.

Choice of music may also not be repeated. (Yes, there are two James Bond programs on the list, but Yuna and Wakaba use different music for the most part, so I'm letting it slide.)

I debated long and hard about whether or not I should still include programs from skaters who have proven themselves to be not so great people. I'm someone who has little difficulty separating the art from the artist, so in the end, I decided to keep them listed (although most of them got knocked down a few pegs). This list is more about the choreography than the skater anyway, although there are certainly some problematic choreographers out there, too. (Looking at you especially, Morozov!) So, just because a skater is listed doesn't mean that I'm a fan of them or that I condone their actions! I just think certain programs are still great regardless of the skaters' terrible behavior off the ice.

My Thoughts on Descendants Canon

I was thinking about it and wanted to share. I’ve noticed everyone from screenwriters to this fandom over the years has brought a LOT to the canon (including me) and this last movie…kinda doesn’t fit that canon.

We’ve always perceived these characters to be continuations of the OG Disney Movies. Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, etc all happened as they did in their animated movies and the next thing was Descendants. It’s likely Descendants Canon doesn’t even consider sequels (Little Mermaid 2, Cinderella 2 and 3, etc)

Now, lots of us (myself included) do nitpick some other Disney canons for fanfiction or theory purposes. For example, I roll with The Little Mermaid: The Musical Canon that Triton and Ursula and Poseidon’s kids. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s never mentioned in the OG cartoon movie. Another example I’ve seen is folks accepting Maleficent (2014) as canon, which led to a lot of King Stephen is Mal’s father theories. Also, Greek Mythology? We all love discussing the complexities of D3 Hades being…D3 Hades.

Then there’s the books, by my guess written retroactively to the movies. I love them, I love the depth De La Cruz gives to this world. Unfortunately, I’m not sure book canon is heavily considered when writing the script (tho shoutout D4 for making Castlecoming a thing).

All of this to say: the Descendants Cinematic Universe (yes, this is DCU now) was originally thought to be based on JUST The original animated films.

Except now all those characters are in High School together? What?

I’ve said this once already, but it reminds me of The School for Good and Evil. All the Heroes and Villains went to school together and then after graduation went off to be in a fairytale. I think the DCU could be interpreted as something similar. Hear me out:

First thing: Let’s assume for a minute DCU is separate from the original movies it’s based on. The blue-haired Ella and the blonde cartoon Cinderella are different characters. A little trickier: Teen Maleficent and Maleficent (D1) are the same person, but not the same as Sleeping Beauty (1959) Maleficent.

Second thing: Take exact copies of all those Original Animated characters and put them together in the same place at the same time. Now they all go to high school together. This part is the SGE-like part, but the difference is there isn’t such a strict distinction of heroes and villains. Merlin teaches everyone. Their fairytales are their choice.

Which brings me to the third: ALL OF THE PLOTS STILL HAPPEN, and in their world it’s just common place and also translated differently. Ella still has an Evil Stepmother, a dance to go to, and a prince to see, but it doesn’t look like the cartoon at all.

Other examples:

Hades is indeed a teenager, and just casually a King of the Underworld and a God. That’s just how this place works.

Jaladdin. JALADDIN. If they’re together, their story already panned out, but maybe in a way that’s more DCU-like. Maybe Princess Jasmine needed to have a date to a certain royal event (instead of picking a suitor). Maybe good ol Vizier Jafar sent a skater punk in detention to a pawnshop for the lamp. Yes, Genie was a Genie, but maybe also a thriftstore owner who helped Aladdin get the girl with some thrifty style and a dusty magic carpet. I’m spitballing here.

My point is: all the fairytale stories will still take place, and all the characters are the same BUT separate from Original Animated Disney Canon. Aladdin already happened. Cinderella is currently happening. Alice in Wonderland is SO FAR in the future. Peter Pan may happen soon. Captain Hook already lost his hand, so he already blames Pan for that. (Can yall imagine its his twerp cousin or something, lol)

(I can’t explain Morgie. Morgana La Fey is from Once and Future King (King Authur’s story). She was not in Disney’s The Sword in the Stone, which is only 1/4 of OFK. The main villain in Disney’s movie was Madam Mim.)

This explanation also makes it a little easier to digest the fact that Beast was able to unite the kingdoms and banish the villains. If DCU was straight outta Disney canon, he would have to unite 1920s Louisiana (Princess and the Frog) with Aladdin’s Agrabah (just not real).

So yeah, that’s how I’m somehow wrapping my brain around all this. What do y’all think?

has one older sister, sydney, born in 1998 (who now works as a tattoo artist in LA and makes sure to attend every concert erika has in the area) despite the distance she kept in contact and managed to stay close to sydney, even though they drifted apart in between (the 2014-17 period)

her aunt became her local guardian when she moved to seoul, and her family or at least one of her parents would come to visit for a week every month in the early years, until she became an adult + started touring. definitely sees herself as closer to the members than to her immediate family even though she hates admitting it bc she feels guilty.

Seeing Mac dressing up as Freddy Mercury while singing this song would be funny, but it reflects on his journey from an underdog to the champ.

Star Mika (My OC)- SMILEY by Yena (Feat. BIBI)

This song really kept me upbeat and I happen to like K-pop so, Mika would keep on dancing when listening to this song while wearing some Deco outfit or a colorful Lolita dress.

Glass Joe- La vie en rose by Edith Piaf

This song is actually one of my Tita's (aunt) favorites when she was still in high school and knowing Joe, he would simply try to mix his dance moves of pop ballad and contemporary dance. I would love to see him in a very slick tuxedo or something fancy but flexible.

Von Kaiser- Part of Me by Katy Perry

Ok, I know what you are thinking since this song has already been taken but what if the coach was male, and since the original music video of this song was taken place in the military so why not? Von Kaiser would fit into this very well, he would have the same dance moves as the original Part of Me coach but a little different.

Disco Kid- Let's Groove by Earth, Wind, Fire

I have heard of this song and yes, I have seen the 2016 Just Dance version of this but what if it was a solo coach instead? Enter Disco Kid, he would be in a really funky 70s disco suit because, of course, he's all about disco! I would have picked other songs from the funky 70s but this one really sticks to me.

King Hippo- Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride from Disney's Lilo and Stitch

This song brings back childhood memories when I first saw Lilo and Stitch and hearing this song feels very relaxing and upbeat. Hippo would really like to dance to this song, making cute hula moves while also adding a touch of that relaxing upbeat rhythm.

Piston Hondo- Pokemon Theme Song

Now this song is really cool since it can be heard in both English and Japanese. Hondo would do well in this song while also dressing up as Ash Ketchum and being accompanied by Pikachu in the dance.

Bear Hugger- Timber by Pitbull (ft. Ke$ha)

Another song is taken, yes I know but what if this one is a trio and it would be in this awesome claymation style. Seeing Bear Hugger dancing while being accompanied by Mr. Bear and his squirrel friend would be so cute and cool.

We already had Prince Ali from JD 2014 and and A Whole New World from JD 2024 so why not this song? It would be so cool to see Great Tiger dressing up as the live-action Genie from the live-action movie Aladdin, his clones would also add flare to the dance

Don Flamenco- Livin La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin

Picture this, a song from JD 4 would be perfect for Don but make it duet and extreme with him and Carmen in an amazing flamenco/tango style dance. There would also be a 2nd version of this but it's normal and he is trying to seduce Mika in this.

Aran Ryan- The Spark Irish by Kabin Crew and Lisdoonvarna Crew

Yes, I have seen the TikToks on this song and it would be a perfect summer song for Aran. He would go wild for this song while doing his famous Irish jig in this and yes, this one would also have an extreme version of it.

Soda Popinski- Moscow Moscow by Dschinghis Khan and Jay Khan

I only have heard of this song from a video for a MMD Hetalia meme but this would be such a funny song to have. I know that Rasputin is the more popular song on JD but having another Russian song like this would be so cool and hilarious at the same time.

Bald Bull- Centuries by Fall Out Boy

JD 2023 released one Fall Out Boy song but what if there is another one, enter Centuries. This one would be themed after Ancient Greece with Bald Bull as coach. He would have this gladiator minotaur costume and sick dance moves.

Super Macho Man- Footloose by Kenny Loggins

One of the most iconic from both the past and today. SMM would be so cool to see in the 50s setting with a crowd cheering for him.

Mr. Sandman- Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics

The song for Night Swan's origins in JD 2022 is perfect for Mr. Sandman. This one would be the male version and it would be in a dream-like setting with flashing lights, sleeping sheep, and bright stars. And it would be so cool for Sandman to wear an outfit to match the setting.

One of my favorite things about Dani and her fans is how much they have romanticized dragons and unironically feed into the mother of dragons title and will literally treat those three lizards like they are her 'children.' Like, they don't know that considering fire breathing lizards that can only destroy as your children is probably not a great thing in their fave's arc lol.

There are a lot of rumors going on that the actress han so hee is going to be in the jk1 mv that set to come out in July because both of their staffs have been photographed to be in the same location and a lot of people are assuming it’s gonna be romantic and have a lot of “love” scenes + people are also saying that Jo went on a date with a woman in LA and are bringing up the fact that he also went on date with a woman jeju and it’s causing alot of chaos and people are starting to doubt kookmin again. My question is, if it’s true and han so hee is in the mv and it turns out to be romantic do you think it will affect the “believability” of kookmin? And I know men can have female friends but alot of people are saying it happened way too many times for it to be just them “hanging out” since it’s mostly a one on one kind of situation. To ME, Jk being in a video with a woman in any way or using "she" "girl" or anything that doesn't point to Jimin, wouldn't phase me at all. This wouldn't affect the credibility of Jikook for ME.

I keep using Ricky Martin as an example but he is really the best example. He is a gay man with videos like the following:

I wouldn't think "Omg, Jk danced with a woman. He must not be into men." Because these performances of dancing with a woman or a man don't define anyone's gender. It's just art.

I've never seen her hanging out with Jungkook. The picture of Jungkook in Jeju doesn't even show that he was with a woman in a romantic way or a date. It shows nothing. Just like all the other pictures where Jungkook is standing close to a woman. Nothing.

Today’s 2014 Best Dancer is Carter Williams from Center Stage Performing Arts Studio. He was the Las Vegas Junior Male Best Dancer and his other TDA placements include 2016 Teen 2nd RU, 2017 Teen 2nd RU, and 2020 Senior 2nd RU. Since winning he now dances for Weber State and competed at Nationals this year where his team won 1st in Jazz and Hip Hop. Him and his former Ballroom partner Rylee Arnold also has placed 5th at Worlds in 2019 and he also made top 6 on SYTYCD.

1996: It gets Better. Or in some cases, retroactively worse.

I really honestly referred to 1996’s chart as a “palate cleanser”! Not “an absolute emotional minefield”? Not “you’re going to be crying in your car while listening to ‘Name’ by The Goo Goo Dolls”?!

I was excited when I wrote up to 2022 chart to report that fully 10% of the top 100 that year were Spanish-language tracks. But even back in 1996, we had two songs on the chart in Spanish: #98, the cringe classic “Macarena” by Los del Rio, and the number ONE song of the year, *squints at notes*: “Macarena- Bayside Boys Remix”.

My grasping claim at authenticity is that I first heard this song in Mexico City at a discotheque. I was the girl they pulled up onto a chair to demonstrate learning the basic dance movements- I assume it’s standard to choose the ugliest duckling for this honor? Later, when I was getting hit on less than my friends, someone offered me the condolence that it was just because I’m not blonde. They were right to offer up this worldly advice!

I count it among the saddest realizations of my adult life that when Darius Rucker says that the dolphins made him cry, he meant the football team. I had instantly conjured an adorable vignette where Darius goes to Sea World and the dolphins don’t scare him, exactly, but he is very startled when one comes out of the tank to nuzzle him. There are tears. A close second is the realization that Quad City DJs do not in fact rep the quad cities of Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, and Moline.

Song of the Year: Is it reasonable to say anything other than Macarena? “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette is on the chart, but I think it’s more correct to talk about it in the context of 1995. Still, it’s an all-timer. And Flea performed the bassline- listen to it now with that on your mind!

“California Love” by 2Pac, Roger, and Dr. Dre could be that Song of the Year candidate. This isn’t a 1996 memory by any means, but in 2014 I moved to Orange County, California from Maryland. I moved for my spouse’s job, and I moved not only without having my own job lined up, but completely sight-unseen. No one, myself included, had even considered that I should see the place I was moving to. Shortly after moving, my friends Nadia and Nathan visited, and I remember riding around LA in their rental car when this song came on. This was maybe the first moment after my move when I thought, yeah, this might be ok.

Song that may have actually aged well: “Missing” by Everything but the Girl

Forgotten Gems: “1-2-3-4 (Sumpin’ New)” by Coolio and “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check” by Busta Rhymes. I wasn’t actually that aware of hip hop music in 1996. I was no longer listening to the Top 40 station (KQKQ Sweet 98 in Omaha) but instead was listening to whichever current iteration of the “alternative” station. We thought we were cool, but it turns out “alternative” was just exclusionary.

Similarly, the “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack mostly left no trace in my mind, but I can also blame that on not being in the right age demographic. It’s all over the 1996 chart, though, and rightly so.

“Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman and “Hook” by Blues Traveler: both of these songs bring back specific memories of trying to relate to my mother by offering her a current popular song that I thought she could find acceptable. She didn’t take the bait either time.

“Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio and L.V. The first R-rated movie I saw in the theater was “Dangerous Minds.” I lied and said that I saw “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” which somehow was more acceptable than a film about the power of teaching! I’m sure I was shifty about my lie, which was chalked up to premarital sex, but it’s definitely on brand in retrospect.

I’m including the video for “Ironic” by Alanis Morisette as a favorite iconic video from the 1996 chart, but it’s also a trap I’ve set to see if anyone will jump into the comments without reading the whole essay to push their glasses up and offer their opinion on which lyrics of the song do or do not embody the concept of irony.

In 2014, when T.B.L., the creator of the World Wide Web, was asked what they didn't foresee about the internet, they simply said: "kittens”. Kittens and cuteness were considered the unexpected, in a world created for data e information, cuteness and kittens are now ubiquitous online beings. A gigantic primal universal language.

Cuteness, known as Kawaii in Japanese, extends beyond mere aesthetics; it embodies deeper meanings such as kindness, emotional depth, and vulnerability but also the heritage of a kawaii rebellion to society standards and stereotypes, born in the 70s and nowaday transcended in the e-girls online presence . In a society fixated on strength and tangible outcomes, where imperfections are often shunned, emotions are mistakenly viewed as weaknesses and errors. However, embracing cuteness serves as a weapon for self-acceptance, challenging stereotypes and artificial displays of strength. It's a reminder that it's perfectly acceptable to express one's emotions openly, cause It’s ok to cry . The human body becomes more than just a vessel for perfection and strength; it becomes a ritual field, a canvas, for feelings and emotion and their symbolic enactment .

“ Stay Cute _ UWU “ is the new chapter of the y2k20 series “La Fauna, I Am Dancing in a Room” ; a work about the eternal diffusion of gestures and micro choreography in the era of social algorithms. As millions of bedrooms are uploaded online every day, inside them millions of users perform the same gestures. The online gesture is now a choreography that never ends, a performative expression of a mutual borderless language. The gesture wanders by mimesis from one room to another, often without any or just minimal variation apart from its new habitat: the body of the performer and the room that hosts it. Part of the various habitats regarding La Fauna 2k20, including ROSES, the first habitat presented at RomaEuropa DigitalLive 2020, I Am Dancing in a Room, pursues the contemporary life of online micro choreography, in which the gesture and sets of gestures unite millions of users and their habitats. In the same way we could see a sequence of gestures repeated for days following a single ritual hashtag, thus observing a perennial creative state of the user and the person, repossessed by the gesture and the movement.

The movement thus enters an expanded state of existence, crossing space, time and cultural boundaries, inscribed in the virtual walls of the entire connected planet, projecting us wherever there may be a connected user and his webcam. I Am Dancing In A Room, brings together on the same monitor, a series of performers and friends of the artist, who perform a choreography for webcam. Accompanying this visual flow are aquatic alien landscapes, floating stickers, avatars, memes and motivational statuses, as if virtual worlds could blossom and exist as online life forms.

Nel 2014, quando a T.B.L., il creatore del World Wide Web, è stato chiesto cosa non avesse previsto di Internet, ha semplicemente risposto: "gattini". Gattini e tenerezza erano considerati l'inaspettato, in un mondo creato per i dati e le informazioni, la tenerezza e i gattini sono ora esseri online onnipresenti. Un gigantesco linguaggio universale primordiale.

La tenerezza cuteness , nota come Kawaii in giapponese, si estende oltre la mera estetica; incarna significati più profondi come gentilezza, profondità emotiva e vulnerabilità, ma anche l'eredità di una ribellione kawaii agli standard e agli stereotipi della società, nata negli anni '70 e oggi trascesa nella presenza online delle e-girl. Il gesto vaga per mimesi da una stanza all'altra, spesso senza alcuna o solo una minima variazione a parte il suo nuovo habitat: il corpo dell'esecutore e la stanza che lo ospita. Parte dei vari habitat riguardanti La Fauna 2k20, tra cui ROSES, il primo habitat presentato a RomaEuropa DigitalLive 2020, I Am Dancing in a Room, insegue la vita contemporanea della micro coreografia online, in cui il gesto e gli insiemi di gesti uniscono milioni di utenti e i loro habitat. Allo stesso modo potremmo vedere una sequenza di gesti ripetuti per giorni seguendo un singolo hashtag rituale, osservando così uno stato creativo perenne dell'utente e della persona, riappropriati dal gesto e dal movimento.

Il movimento entra così in uno stato di esistenza espanso, attraversando confini spaziali, temporali e culturali, inscritto nelle pareti virtuali dell'intero pianeta connesso, proiettandoci ovunque ci siano un utente connesso e la sua webcam. I Am Dancing In A Room, riunisce sullo stesso monitor, una serie di performer e amici dell'artista, che eseguono una coreografia per webcam. Ad accompagnare questo flusso visivo ci sono paesaggi alieni acquatici, adesivi galleggianti, avatar, meme e stati motivazionali, come se i mondi virtuali potessero fiorire ed esistere come forme di vita online.

We be dancing.

I was intrigued by the notes to Esperanza Spalding and Milton Nascimeto's collaboration. In the notes there's a story of how Spalding first heard Milton Nacimento in the early 2000s when a visiting musician played Wayne Shorter's album Native Dancer. She wonders: “How could I have not known about this before?”

Last month I wrote about how a local radio station is celebrating fifty years on the air by encouraging listeners to send in up to 20 songs between 1974 and now. It's a fun excess. So I thought I'd try to put together 20 songs through a loosely defined notion of World Music. I cheated and added "Funky Kingston" from 1973 to make the list 21 songs.

As in my previous playlist i selected a bunch of songs and ordered them chronologically and then choose 4 songs for each of the 5 decades. I mixed up the songs from the decades in the previous playlist, but in this one kept the chronological order.
