starting to think about looking for a new job in the very near future and my biggest fear rn is just. being in a new workplace, new people who have been there for so long already, just integrating myself into the place. leaving where I am now. and it's proper holding me back from even starting the job hunt. I know u recently got a new job if I'm not mistaken? did you have any worries like this or anything like that? advice maybe? 😭
Yes, I started a new job a month ago! Big huge response under the cut!
There were several factors that went into the decision. First, I hated my old job. It was a call center, and every single millisecond was monitored. I literally had to time my shits. They kept changing the metrics by which they measured our performance (making it harder to do "well" when, by old standards, I was doing "excellent"). They never approved same-day PTO. Each unapproved absence was a mark on your record that got you one step closer to being fired. An unapproved absence, even excused by a doctor's note, was still a mark on your record. I don't even know how that can be legal. They kept firing hardworking, established people and replacing them with new people overseas to take advantage of even worse labor laws and exchange rates. 🙃
The thing is, even though I'm autistic and have phone anxiety, I genuinely enjoyed helping people who've been victims of fraud. I was good at it, too. I was there for almost 5 years, but I knew I was considered expendable. Their policies were blatantly ableist, and I just couldn't take it anymore. Second, I wanted a job where I could go into the office. The old one changed to permanent work from home, and I kept having severe depression from being so isolated. Third, I wanted a job that would use my talents. I mean, I was good at taking phone calls, but I double-majored in math and Japanese, graduated summa cum laude, and was inducted in Phi Beta Kappa lol. And lastly, I wanted a job with opportunity for growth. (A career? 🤢)
So, the desire to get a new job started a couple years ago. But first, I had to buy my own car. I did that in February. Then the whole process of finding a new job began in April. I was in an intensive outpatient therapy program for 6 weeks. I filed a short-term disability claim and was out of work for that time. I worked on getting myself better, and got help from my peers, the therapists, the social workers, and my mom to brush up my resume and cover letter and start looking at jobs. I returned to work at the end of my disability claim with the hope that I wouldn't be there much longer.
I applied to a total of 3 different jobs, and it took several weeks to do one after the other. I would get too overwhelmed doing more than one at a time. I did the work myself, but my mom had to poke and prod me and be there as an emotional support. The first application was immediately rejected. I did a phone interview and an in-person interview for the second one and got rejected. Then my mom heard about a coworker from another department at her company retiring. They were having trouble finding a new person, so my mom told me to apply for that job. I had a phone interview and a videochat interview and got an offer after a week or so. It was a $9k bump in pay. 😳
Don't get me wrong, the change was incredibly stressful. I cried on my last day at the old job even though I had worked from home for the past 3 years and didn't have any strong relationships with my coworkers. I'm autistic, so change is extra difficult for me. And my shift went from 1 PM - 10 PM to 7:30 AM - 4 PM. That was rough. On top of that, I've developed chronic migraine (more than half of the days in a month) this year. I'm also immunocompromised and have IBS and sensory issues. So, I just have to work through the internalized shame of being disabled. I have a lot of work to do still. I had planned on telling my boss that I'm autistic the first day, but I still haven't mentioned it. It might be obvious based on the stuff I do and bring, though. I wear a mask and giant pink goggles. I bring earplugs, noise cancelling headphones, discreet stim toys, ibuprofen, rizatriptan, anti-nausea meds, Tums, Gas-X, Afrin, and hand sanitizer in my backpack. I've had a couple crying episodes worrying about the social aspect of talking to people and the job itself. But I know this will be a much better fit for me, and this is a company I could work at until I retire.
So, part of it was hard work, and the other part was luck that my mom also works at the company and heard about the position. In these times, I know 3 job applications is nothing, but it took all of my strength just to do those consecutively. My advice? Get an accountability buddy. Try to find someone who can help you break down the process into manageable chunks and make you do them at a reasonable pace, without judgment. Could be a friend, a parent, a sibling, a partner, an old teacher, whoever. As for the actual hunting on the Accursed Websites? You'll have to ask Google for help. That's what I did. 😭
P.S. (IMPORTANT!) With my experience in bank fraud, I've seen a lot of job scams. Take these tips to heart (if you're in America): 1.) Make sure the position on Indeed or wherever is ALSO on the official company website. If possible, apply on the official website. 2.) No company will ever give you a check to buy supplies for the job. A true company will order and ship the supplies to you. 3.) No company will ever prepay you for work you haven't done yet. 4.) No company will ever overpay you and ask you to send part of the money back via Zelle, CashApp, Venmo, PayPal, etc. 4.) No company will ever email you a check. 5.) If you're not familiar with checks and aren't sure if it's legit, call the bank listed on the check to see if it's legit or fraud. 6.) Any too-good-to-be-true work-from-home job is a 100% a scam. 7.) If you think only the elderly fall for scams like this, you're wrong. 18- to 25-year-olds are another big scam victim demographic, especially for scams involving checks or 3rd party payment processors (CashApp, Venmo, etc.). Banks can and will terminate your accounts if you accidentally commit bank fraud or money laundering. 😬
Best of luck!

Entry 7
Since the beginning of the subject, I have learnt a lot about the process behind transitioning into the professional space and the preparedness you must have to succeed in life after study. Through the intensive course, the process from choosing a job, adaptation of your CV and cover letter, development of the key selection criteria and the interview stage were all addressed and have given me valuable insight into my future aspirations and what I need to do to prepare.
Krishnamoorthy & Keating (2021) underlined how the COVID-19 pandemic irreparably changed how people enter the workforce and prepare themselves for lives after study and into a professional setting. Even without the pandemic however, it is clear that the process has moved into a more digital space and the use of technology is helping corporations induct their newest employees quicker than ever before. In doing this subject in an online setting, I feel as though I may be even more prepared than many others who did the subject in person, as I feel this is where the future of job interviews and job induction processes almost completely lies.
Through this subject, I have learnt to properly adapt my documents to really suit the needs of my potential employer. Previously, I would use the same CV and not look to adapt any information or create any responses to the key selection criteria as I did not think it was necessary. Now however, I see the importance in showcasing your worth in the skills that specific company is looking for and highlighting that important information in all of your documents. I also learnt the best practices behind a professional CV and the things that should and shouldn’t be included on them, such as photos and a Linkedin profile link.
The concept of responses to key selection criteria is something that I had never done before, and something I will be sure to implement in future job applications. The ways in which they were addressed both in the cover letter and in its own document would be very beneficial for the potential employer to immediately see the kinds of skills that I have before looking through my CV or heading to my Linkedin for previous work. I believe it is a great jumping off point to be able to see if the candidate is suitable on a base level before any deeper dives into their experience in interview and the other previously stated documents.
Overall, I believe this subject has given me the necessary tools to prepare myself for the professional workplace, and has provided me with useful information and advice that I can continue to use throughout the rest of my life that will benefit me greatly as both an employee and when looking for work.

stay with me
Pairing: Eggsy Unwin x Reader
Prompts: 1. “Stay with me.” 31. “I can’t do this without you.” 33. “Let’s give these fuckers a show.” 39. “It hurts so fucking bad.”
Word Count: 5.8k
Warnings: language, blood, violence, fluff and angst
PLEASE READ: I haven’t mentioned anything in the fic but the idea is that instead of getting married Tilde and Eggsy broke things off after the events of the Golden Circle. The reader is the new Merlin who has been dating Eggsy for a couple of years
A/N: actually super proud of this one, so I hope you guys enjoy!
What the fuck were you thinking? You scolded yourself as you gazed up at the monstrous mansion from your seat in the limousine, its size dwarfing you, making you feel even smaller than you already did. How on earth were you going to pull this one off?
The mission was supposed to be simple. Eggsy went undercover to gather intel, you hacked the location’s mainframe remotely from the Kingsman HQ, and together you would stop the bad guy from executing whatever diabolical plan they had dreamt up. Same as usual. You had hoped Eggsy would even be home in time to salvage your date night which had so rudely been delayed by William Bates, Kingsman’s latest Bad Guy To Beat.
Unluckily for you, however, Bates was also a tech genius, that being how he made his fortune which he was now using to fund his evil masterminding. Which is why, instead of being able to hack his system remotely, as you normally did as Kingsman’s new Merlin, you were having to go undercover with your boyfriend to access his mainframe manually. With the power of coercion on your side, you should be able to get the biometric scans you need while Eggsy gathers the intel you need to shut down Bate’s boy’s club that are supposedly going to take control of the UK government. How exactly they thought they were going to do that, you didn’t know. All you knew was that your complete lack of field experience and minimal hours of training had not prepared you for this scenario at all.
“You ready, love?” Eggsy asked you from his seat opposite you in the limo. His strong, unfaltering gaze grounded you, taking your brain away from the enormity of the mission at hand.
You were two very capable agents. Eggsy especially. You had complete faith in him. But you knew, right now, you needed to be someone he could put his faith in. The mission comes first, you reminded yourself. So you exhaled slowly, putting your anxieties aside. “Let’s give these fuckers a show,” you smirked at him, referring to your cover.
His smirk in return was immediate. “That’s my girl.”
As soon as he opened the limo door, the Eggsy Unwin you knew was gone, replaced in the blink of an eye by billionaire, Robert Hudson, looking to buy into this boy’s club of Bates’. He helped you out of the limo and then you walked, arm in arm, up to the security guards posted at the grand double doors of Bates’ home, where he tonight was hosting his charity’s annual gala. A front for inducting rich, like-minded extremists into his little group.
“Hudson, party of two,” Eggsy smiled politely at the guards, exuding confidence from his every pore.
The security guard, a large bald man with an expressionless face, looked down at his tablet for all of two seconds before he looked up again, surveying the area. “Welcome, sir,” he said as he and the other guard moved in unison, opening a door each to grant you entrance to one of the most lavish scenes you had ever witnessed in person.
You worked hard to keep the awe from your face, knowing Arabella Hudson should be well used to the kind of scene before her. Gorgeous gowns and bespoke suits littering the grand ballroom, framed by stunning floristry and lit by glittering chandeliers. Normally, you would grab the first flute of champagne you could find and make Eggsy twirl you around the dance floor to the sound of the live orchestra posted in the back corner of the room. But today, the two of you walked towards the sea of drab billionaires calmly and cooly, finding hands to shake, needing to identify the people who had the information and connections you required to get this mission rolling.
It was over an hour of talking to various celebrities, politicians and the wealthiest members of society before your host, William Bates made an appearance. He made his way down the grand staircase carefully, extremely aware of the attention that his entrance had grabbed. He walked hand in hand with his husband, Thomas Bates, whose elegance and grace was so severe one might think he was actually floating down the marble steps.
Inwardly, you rolled your eyes. What kind of a self-important prick thought he had to be fashionably late to his own event? Nevertheless, you plastered what you hoped was a bright smile on your face and joined the other guests in applauding the hosts as they made their entrance.
“So,” Eggsy continued the conversation he was having with the middle aged Irish gentlemen beside him, who positively reeked of old money, “I assume he’s the man to talk to about this…” he paused, for effect, “gentlemen's club I’ve heard whisperings of.”
The Irishman smiled slowly, understanding the meaning between the lines of his words. Eggsy had been working his usual magic to charm this oblivious pawn in Bates’ scheme, and he had very easily created the impression that he would be the kind of person to buy into whatever it was they were planning.
To your surprise, you seemed to be a natural at acting the part and aiding Eggsy in gaining the trust of the corrupt wealthy you were rubbing elbows with. Even Eggsy with his years of experience struggled to keep the admiration and pride out of his eyes as he watched you, nailing the undercover operation.
“He sure is,” the Irishman confirmed, accent thick. “I’ll take you to see him myself. We could use more members like yourself,” he commented cryptically.
That was how you found yourself, another hour later, approaching William Bates, the Irishman leading the way. “William, I’d like you to meet my new friend, Robert Hudson, and his gorgeous wife, Arabella.”
“How do you do?” Bates greeted as he shook Eggsy’s hand.
The two of you fawned over the magnificence of the gala, paying your respects to the host before the Irishman couldn’t help but interject in your small talk. “Will, I think Rob here is a prime candidate for your little side project.”
“Well, if you keep bringing me great candidates it won’t be so little,” Bates jested cheesily, clearly trying to maintain a cover.
“From what little I’ve heard of this project I developed a great interest. I’d love to be able to discuss it with you further and hopefully get involved,” Eggsy lied.
“That is just excellent,” a grin crept over Bates’ face, clearly eager to induct more extremists. “I’m not going to lie to you, I did a bit of reading up on you and I think you would be perfect.” You bit back a smile, the idiot had found the digital trail you had left for him to find Eggsy and contemplate him as a new recruit. “I’d actually love to discuss it now, if you don’t mind?”
Eggsy cast his eyes down at you, feigning a questioning glance for permission. You gave him a reassuring smile and the smallest of nods. “That sounds great.”
“Phenomenal! You two, follow me,” he began to turn, leading you out before Eggsy interjected.
“I prefer not to involve my wife in business actually.”
My wife. For a split second, you forgot the extreme stakes of the situation you were in, so taken aback by what Eggsy had called you. Obviously, it was just for his cover. Nevertheless, there was a deep longing in your chest. You were quite sure you wanted nothing more from this life than to be Eggsy’s wife. To be with him for life.
As quickly as the thought entered your mind, it went away, realising you were going to be on your own from here on out. Panic seeped through your chest, burning up within you. Despite your emotions, you maintained a neutral expression.
“Go enjoy the party, darling,” Eggsy spoke directly to you now. “I’m sure I won’t be long gone.”
With that, he sent you one of his dazzling winks only you could see, and he followed Bates away from the party and down a heavily-guarded corridor. You were officially on your own.
As discussed, you mingled for a while longer before you excuse yourself from the conversation you were in to go to the ladies. Your precaution in avoiding arising any form of suspicion by making your exit at the same time as Eggsy was largely unnecessary, seeing as the majority of the guests were far too intoxicated at this point to even take note of you.
“Excuse me?” You approached one of the guards barricading the corridor Eggsy had just disappeared down. “I was wondering if you could show me the way to the bathroom?” As you spoke, you placed the faintest of touches to his arm, as though to grab his attention. In actual fact, you were placing a small clear patch on his bare skin, imperceptibly using concentrated, fast-acting toxins to make him extremely susceptible to charm. In less than twenty seconds, he would be doing whatever you asked of him. It was of your own design, and you were extremely proud of it, to say the least.
Within ten minutes, your big dopey security guard was placing his hand on the biometric scanner to open the control room, with two bodies at your feet. Not exactly ideal, but you didn’t have the time or the patience to patch up every guard you came across so the two guarding the door had to go.
You didn’t even get a ruffle your skirt until the door to the control room opened, to reveal three men, two in charge of surveillance and two in charge of firing the many weapons Bates had hidden throughout the mansion to eliminate any threats. Clearly, this little team weren’t two quick on the uptake since none of them had managed to take up arms to defend your little raid of their workplace.
“Shoot them, Ben!” You instructed your brand new personal bodyguard, as you fired your own weapon, concealed as your bedazzled clutch just as Eggsy’s gun was often concealed in a briefcase.
Seeing you as the weaker link, the third of the men who was yet to be shot charged you, knocking you to the ground. “Oof!” You exclaimed, the wind completely knocked out of you. Without a single word from you, Ben had shot the man straight in the head, the toxin working it’s magic of instilling a sense of loyalty toward whoever was instructing them.
You sucked in a deep breath from your place on the floor, the pain it brought already informing you that you may have a cracked rib or two. Ben offered his hand, which you took appreciatively. God you missed your office at HQ.
‘U ALRIGHT?’ Flashed across the display of your glasses, Eggsy having subtly typed the message out with his eyes from wherever he was, clearly having been watching your camera’s streaming.
“I’m fine, Galahad, just focus on your end of things,” you adopted your usual objective tone which Eggsy was so used to hearing from you on missions.
You didn’t have to see him to know Eggsy was fighting off a scowl, hating when you referred to him by his code name. He liked to say he hated how professional you were when it came to your work life, but truly, he loved your unwavering passion and commitment to Kingsman. Even if that translated to you insisting on keeping your private and professional lives separate.
Eggsy, as he followed Bates through a series of secret doors, let out a breath he didn’t realise he had been holding as he heard you through the comms. He had faith in you and your abilities as a Kingsman, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t worried out of his mind with you in the field with him for the first time.
“Alright, I’m in,” your voice rang out through the comms once more. “I’ve got your back, Galahad.”
Your words filled him with a sense of ease as he walked closer and closer to what was possibly an extremely dangerous situation. He knew you would always be there to get him out of hot water when he needed it.
“I know all this secrecy and security measures might seem a bit excessive, Robert, but what I’m about to tell you is highly sensitive information,” Bates began his spiel, completely oblivious to the fact that Eggsy’s glasses were recording everything he said. “As you probably know, up until a few years ago I was working on a political career of my own, using the influence I ascertained from my business’s success to try and make a difference in this country. I quickly learned that I was going to be able to change shit all. Too many right wing conservatives in my way voting down everything we tried to put forward,” he shook his head, Eggsy through his research identifying that he was clearly a man scorned by the oppression he had suffered as a gay man his whole life, absolutely desparate to make changes. “But then, just as I was about to give up, I was hit with the greatest inspiration there ever was,” a smile crept onto his face as he paused dramatically. “Valentine.”
Eggsy sighed internally, wishing for the love of God that the influence of that man would just die out already.
“To see someone come so close to changing the world for the better. That was… life changing,” there was a glimmer in Bates’ eye, which quickly disappeared as he continued on. “Obviously there were flaws in that plan, however. Leaving so many like minded people to die who would so clearly follow in his leadership. But the way he took action to make change. That was groundbreaking,” he smiled wide, looking to Eggsy now for some kind of input.
“I agree completely,” Eggsy gave Bates what he was looking for. “But what action could we possibly take?”
Somehow, the smile on Bates’ face grew even wider, mania spelt out all over his face. “I’m glad you asked,” he said, placing his hand upon the biometric scanner on the wall behind him.
At first, Eggsy thought he was just looking at an empty room, but quickly realised he was entering an observation room as the wall made completely of glass around the corner came into view. On the other side of the two way mirror, was rows upon rows of beds in a warehouse sized room a flight of stairs below where they stood. Each bed was occupied, each occupant appearing to be deceased as they laid face up, completely still with their arms by their sides. The only indication that they were alive came from the machines hooked up to their brains, displaying their brain waves as they slept.
“It may not look like it, but you are looking at the greatest army in history,” Bates explained. “Each soldier you see here is dormant, their minds made, by my scientists, to be extremely pliant. Each one of them is awaiting programming, which will be sent directly to their brains through those computers,” he pointed to the brain monitors. “My programming will make them the most obedient, most highly trained soldiers alive within seconds. Ready to overthrow the government of the United Kingdom at a moment’s notice.”
“Already working on a reversal program,” you notified Eggsy through your comms, having discovered the information Bates was divulging through a quick skim of his files.
“Who are they?” Eggsy questioned.
“The homeless, the poor, the isolated. People that won’t be missed when they disappear. All right wing conservatives,” smugness oozed from Bates’ reply. “All the people who agree with those standing in the way of making the changes this world needs. LGBT rights. Climate change prevention. Free healthcare. And with more help from people like you, Robert, we won’t just be making these changes here, we can make them on a global scale. All you have to do is enter your money into the pool of funding and you too can be a part of our little, gentlemen’s club, as we like to call it.”
“A gentlemen’s club that rules the world, eh?” Eggsy joked.
“Precisely.”
From your position in the control room, you snorted. “Great thanks for the complete confession, dickhead, that’s going to playback well in court,” you laughed quietly as you typed away, working at lightning speed to finish the program which would set Bates’ victims free of any control he had over them.
The rest of the conversation became white noise to you as you worked furiously, knowing the time Eggsy was buying you by chatting with Bates and inquiring further into the logistics was limited.
“Okay Galahad,” you spoke once more, ten minutes later, “the program is complete. I just need you to get Bates back to the party before I send the program to the computers so he doesn’t notice that anything has gone awry before the feds arrive.”
“Why don’t we go back to the party and celebrate over a bottle of champagne? I’m sure your other guests are missing you,” you heard Eggsy follow you direction over the comms.
For a moment, you couldn’t believe your luck. Your first field mission. A taped confession. All of the offenders all piled into one gala, drunk out of their minds completely oblivious to the fact that they were ten minutes away from arrest. Enough evidence to prosecute them all ten times over already sent.
Luck, of course, was not actually on your side. Little did you know, as you were patting yourself on the back prematurely, a guard was approaching the control room door to swap positions with one of the guards who now laid on the floor dead. In your haste to get to where you were needed most, behind the keyboard, you had forgotten to instruct Ben to clean up his mess.
The lights throughout the entirety of the mansion flashed red as the guard raised the alarm. Through the surveillance screen to your right, you could see the people around Eggsy go on the offensive immediately. “Ben guard the door!” you screamed, needing to protect both yourself and Eggsy simultaneously.
As soon as you yelled out, the door to the control room was open and Eggsy was into action as he started to fight off the guards he was surrounded by in the most heavily guarded area of the entire building. Ben was scuffling with the guard who had called the code red behind you as you worked furiously to lock the door to the control room and bar anymore guards from interfering with you. At the same moment the door slammed shut, a gunshot rang out.
Without thinking twice you grabbed your clutch-pistol, as Ben’s dead body fell to the floor with a thud. You were quick to turn and fire a shot straight between the man’s eyes. Just about as quick as he had been in shooting you straight through your abdomen.
“Fuck!” you exclaimed, body curling inwards as you clutched the wound.
“Merlin?” Eggsy questioned across the line, even as he fought off the guards from every side.
You stared down at the crimson seeping through your dress, ears ringing with shock.
“Merlin, I could really do with some back up right now!” Eggsy yelled across the comms, not having registered the meaning of the commotion on your end of the line. You said nothing in return, writing in pain in the chair which was quickly becoming soaked in your blood. “Y/N I can’t do this without you!” He spoke your true name, desperation evident in his voice.
His words struck something deep within you. Eggsy Unwin, the love of your life, needed you. No gunshot wound was going to stop you from saving him. You barely felt the pain as the adrenaline began to pump through your veins once more. Within seconds you have access to the guns hidden within the walls of the corridor Eggsy was in, and you were firing away at anyone who dared try and harm him.
As soon as all immediate threats to Eggsy were eliminated, you moved onto the next largest threat. William Bates running for the hills to find the nearest computer so he could launch his program and have an army at his disposal.
As he ran, you found the nearest gun in a corridor nearby and locked sights on your target. Bates crumpled to the ground with a tremendous scream as a bullet shattered his right knee cap. You smirked, despite yourself.
You glanced back to the surveillance displaying the party where all the guests were convening. The alarm and red lights had ceased, and while some were sober enough to realise that they should be on their way before trouble arrived, the majority were so drunk they just continued as they were. Despite your slip up, most of the criminals would still be brought to justice immediately.
So with what little energy was left in you, you hit send on the program you had just designed. Within thirty minutes they should regain consciousness, with their free will and identities still in tact.
You slumped in your chair, breathing out a sigh of relief. The mission was complete. The world was safe. Most importantly to you Eggsy was safe. You watched as he approached Bates, propping him up against the wall, finishing the mission the way he loved most, rubbing salt in the wound with witty remarks.
You smiled to yourself, forgetting everything but your love for Eggsy in that moment. That is, until you glanced down at your abdomen once more, remembering yourself and what exactly might be happening to you.
“Eggsy,” your use of his first name grabbing his attention immediately as you spoke softly across the line. “Eggsy I’ve been hit.”
With your words, Eggsy’s blood ran cold. No, he thought to himself, body kicking into gear before his brain did, turning and bolting back down the way he came. No no no no no.
A notification flashes across his glasses display that Kingsman’s personal medical team has been alerted and are on their way to the scene.
It doesn’t take him long to find you, remembering the route exactly from when he had been watching you to ensure you got to the control room safely. When he arrived, the door, to his dismay, was locked.
“Babe!” He yells, voice so much more desperate than it was not ten minutes earlier when he had begged for your help. “Babe open the door!”
The moment of silence between his plea and when the door opens seemed to stretch on for an age. Eggsy needing to get to you in this moment more than he thinks he’s needed anything in his entire life. The sight he’s met with seems to fill his lungs with ice. You, slumped in a chair, covered in your own blood.
“Eggsy,” you cry, your fear finally catching up with you, allowing tears to leak from your eyes.
He’s at your side in a second, ripping his jacket off and scrunching it into a ball to use to place pressure on the wound.
“Eggsy, it hurts so fucking bad,” you sob, overcome with the pain.
Eggsy swears he feels his heart physically splitting in two, watching you in absolute agony with no power to stop it. The only power he had, was to hopefully take away some of your fear. “It’s all going to be okay, babe. The paramedics are on their way and they’re going to fix you up. They’ll make the pain stop, I promise.”
As he consoles you he takes hold of your body and lowers you to the ground, allowing you to lie down and providing himself with better ability to slow the bleeding of your wound. The movement causes stars to dance before your eyes, and black dots start to cloud your vision. You shut your eyes, hoping to make it stop.
“Hey, hey, hey. Stay with me now darling. You have to stay awake,” he tries to maintain a calm tone, knowing the last thing you needed from him right now was panic, no matter how strongly he felt it.
“Why?” You ask, tears ceasing, head so groggy from blood loss you begin to lose sight of sense.
“Because,” Eggsy fights back tears, “I have a really important question to ask you. And if you go to sleep you won’t be able to give me an answer.”
Neither of you take any note of the sound of the feds arriving, raiding the charity gala and arresting everyone on the list of names you had sent them.
“Oh Eggsy…” you smile dreamily, blood loss officially making you delirious. “I think we both know my answer is a yes.”
Eggsy allows a single tear to fall, the bitter-sweetness of the moment becoming too much for him. “Agent Galahad?” He hears one of Kingsman’s personal paramedics call from down the hall.
“Hurry up!” He turns and screams in reply.
When he turns back to you, your eyes are closed and your face is completely void of expression.
“Y/N?” he asks, hoping for you to reopen your eyes. “Y/N!” he shouts, as you fail to do so. Your complete lack of response breaks down his walls, and he begins to sob over your body as the paramedics burst into the room.
In a matter of seconds he is pushed away from you, a medic taking his place in putting pressure on the wound. Another medic, takes your pulse, checking to see if there was any life left in you.
The world slows. An hour seems to pass before the medic says a word. Eggsy is sure that he’s lost you right up until the medic says, “She’s still with us,” giving everyone the go ahead to start work on you to make sure it stays that way.
Naturally, the Kingsman paramedics were some of the best, so as quickly as they had arrived, they were taking you away, already starting work on a blood transfusion to make up for your severe blood loss. Anytime a Kingsman went on a mission, the medical team had plenty of the agents’ blood on standby, for situations exactly like these. Eggsy had lost too many agents in his time as a Kingsman, so when he and Harry worked to rebuild following the wrath of the Golden Circle, he ensured there were as many safety nets available possible.
Even as they moved through the chaos that the gala had become, guests being arrested everywhere, the medical team continued their work on you. Eggsy was pushing the stretcher himself, ensuring you were getting as much attention as humanly possible. Sadly, there was only so much they could do until they got you into surgery.
Before he knew it, Eggsy was loading you into a medical truck and being instructed to sit in the front seat. Away from you.
“Bullshit-” he began, before he was quickly interrupted.
“We need the room, Galahad. Do you want to waste precious moments arguing or let us save your girl?” One of the lead medics snapped.
Without a word, Eggsy jogged up to the front seat of the truck and got in. He sat for a moment, fist quickly finding its way into his mouth to stop himself from crying again. Swiftly, he chose to channel his emotion into anger instead.
“Fuck!” he yelled, removing his fist from his mouth and smashing it onto the dash.
He should have never left you in the field alone. He should have asked another agent to come to protect you. To ensure nothing like this happened to you. He made the wrong call and he knew it.
Now, he had no idea what was going on with you. He couldn’t hear a sound coming from behind him over the sound of the siren wailing, ensuring they had the fastest path possible. Your heart could have stopped mere inches behind him and he would have no idea until he stepped out of the truck.
This thought stuck in his mind, ricocheting around through his brain up until the moment he stepped out of the truck again, scared to death of what might have happened to you in the mere minutes since he last saw you. When he did see you, it was like coming up for air after being underwater for too long. Immense relief. You were still alive. You were still with him.
But then, all too soon, you were gone again. Swept away to a private room for surgery, leaving Eggsy alone in an empty corridor. The second you disappeared behind the doorway, Eggsy fell to his knees, drained. He had asked to go into the room with you, but one of the medics had quickly replied, “Yeah because having your patient’s boyfriend doesn’t add any pressure when you’re performing surgery.”
“I’m pretty sure I’m her fiance actually,” he mumbled to the closed door.
It was the longest night of Eggsy Unwin’s life, as he sat there in the hall, awaiting either the best news of his life or the worst. It was an hour before Harry arrived, offering him a hug, which, for the first time in Eggsy’s life brought him no comfort whatsoever. Harry brought with him a couple of chairs, and a glass of water, Eggsy not realising how much he needed it until he had downed it in two gulps.
There were few words spoken between the two men. Harry knowing nothing he could say would be of any help to Eggsy in this moment. Nothing would save him from the dark thoughts he was drowning in, picturing a life without you in it. All he could do for him, and for you, was be there.
By the time the head surgeon stepped out three hours later, Eggsy felt as if he had aged a decade. Nevertheless, he was quick to jump to his feet, eager for information.
“Merlin’s surgery has gone well,” he said, removing the weight of the world from Eggsy’s shoulders. He lifted his hand to his mouth, tears of joy springing to his eyes immediately. “There was a bit of internal damage, but luckily nothing to her major organs. We’ve managed to stop all internal bleeding. From here on out, it’s just about avoiding infection and ensuring she heals properly.”
“Can I see her?” Eggsy asked, eyes glistening with hope in addition to the tears.
“Of course,” the surgeon stepped aside, allowing Eggsy through. “She should wake up in the next thirty minutes.”
Eggsy stepped forward, towards the door before stopping in his tracks. He turned and wrapped his arms around the surgeon, whom he had met all of three times, hugging him tight. “Thank you so much,” he spoke, patting him on the back before pulling back.
Much to the surprise of all men present, Eggsy started to jog down the hall, away from the girl he had been dying to see for hours.
“Eggsy where are you going?” Harry called after him.
“I have to grab something before I see her, I’ll explain later!” Eggsy called back, joy finally making its way back into his voice.
The first thing you became aware of, as the effects of the anaesthesia wore off, was the feeling of two warm hands holding your left one. Before you were even fully conscious, the first thought to enter your head was that Eggsy was here. The knowledge filled you with a sense of ease as your eyes fluttered open, as though you were awaking from a pleasant nap and not a major surgery.
Your eyes met Eggsy’s instantly, as though a magnetic force made it so. “There’s my girl,” his smile reached his tired eyes.
“Hey handsome,” you croaked, taking in his appearance. Hair disheveled, still wearing his blood splattered suit (minus the jacket, of course), glasses tucked away in his pocket. Although he looked like an absolute mess, he still looked happy, riding on the high that the good news about your health had brought.
“Oh my days. You gave me quite the scare there babe,” he forced a laugh, trying to conceal the trauma he had suffered through in not knowing whether or not you were going to make it.
“I’m sorry,” you spoke softly, not buying into his attempt at a cover up and feeling the guilt more sharply than the wound.
“You have nothing to apologise for,” he reached forward with his left hand, stroking your hair, knowing all too well just how much comfort it brought you. “Do you remember what happened?”
“I’m not sure, did anything happen after I said I would marry you?” You feigned genuity in your line of questioning.
His mouth dropped open in shock at your words. “I don’t quite remember asking!” He struggled to hold back laughter at your antics.
“Then ask,” you challenge.
“Well,” he reaches into his pocket, pulling out a little red velvet box, “good thing I grabbed this before you woke up.” He opened the box, revealing the gold ring you would recognise anywhere.
“Oh Eggsy…” you breathed out, gobsmacked at the magnitude of the gesture, “is that…?”
“The ring my dad proposed to my mum with? Yeah, yeah it is,” he smiled, “I asked her for it a couple weeks ago. Last night’s cancelled date night had been when I was planning on proposing.”
You placed your hand over your mouth, trying to contain the smile threatening to take over your entire face.
“But here we are instead. So, Y/N Y/L/N, my best friend and the love of my life, will you marry me?” He grinned, clearly already knowing your answer.
You removed your hand from your mouth to give him your answer for the second time that evening. “Eggsy Unwin of course I will marry you,” a tear slipped from your eye.
Somehow, he grinned even wider, taking your answer as permission to slip the ring onto your finger. Kissing your hand as the ring slid perfectly into place.
“Well, darling, let my first act as your fiance be telling you that you are never going on a field mission again,” Eggsy joked.
“I really wish you would just kiss me instead,” you raised an eyebrow at him.
“I can do that too.”

My Life is Very Shoujo Manga, Chapter 62: Oh no! My boss still remembers!
“Oh my god!” I couldn’t help covering my face. “I’m so mortified you still remember so much! I was hoping you’d forgotten!”
It started off with some office banter.
I mentioned how this other lawyer kept ending up on opposite sides of our cases, that he actually remarked, “That’s funny. Whenever I have this type of matter, it’s always one of your clients.”
To which I retorted, “it’s not that funny. They wouldn’t be our client if they didn’t need our services. There aren’t many of us.”
Then my boss mentioned, “You’re right. There’s only a handful of us...” and began listing firms he knew who practise in our area of law and mentioned how he wasn’t sure if one of them still practised.
“Why? Did he decide to retire?” I asked.
Then I brought up how I once worked in a law firm, immediately before I started working here, where the principal solicitor there was in his 70s, and was close to retiring. How because of that, the only other solicitor who was working there was jealous of me, because he knew his boss would be retiring soon and he wanted to get rid of me so he would be next in line.
On my first day working there, I walked in and introduced myself, and he told me to “sit there,” without introducing me to their systems, where things were etc. As he sat there looking busy for half an hour without going through any sort of induction processes with me, I eventually decided to get up and asked if there was anything he wanted me to help with.
He replied with, “no,” without looking up from his work.
Then the phone started ringing, and he told me to answer even though I had no knowledge of well, anything-- how they usually answered phones, where to find information if someone asked a question, the spelling of names of clients (which obviously I could and did ask for, but sometimes clients are impatient and ask, “why are you asking me this? You should know already.”)
He eventually handed me files to work on, without any instructions e.g. whether I was being given a contract to review it, or arrange for the parties to execute it. When I asked questions, I was met with unfriendliness and unhelpfulness. Then I was bullied by him about my incompetence, and he backstabbed me by telling the boss I didn’t know what I was doing...
(It was honestly a time in my life I thought I felt so incompetent and hated being a lawyer. Until I found my current workplace and discovered it is something I’m capable and passionate about.)
“When John asked me what happened at my old job that I stayed such a short time, I didn’t even know where to start...” I mused to my other colleague.
“Yeah, that was a really bad interview...” my boss said, with his usual straight face. “I decided we’d walk to Joe and the Juice for the interview; a more casual setting, so she wouldn’t feel as nervous...” he shook his head. “That didn’t work. It was a really bad interview.”
“Oh my god!” I couldn’t help covering my face. “I’m so mortified you still remember so much! I was hoping you’d forgotten!”
“... It was really bad.” He paused.
“I decided to take my chance on her and trial her for a bit. Once she started working for me, and I found out she was brilliant.”
Thanks for taking a chance on me, boss 🥺.
I honestly love where I work and what I do now. *Sigh* What a journey it’s been...

The Circle
The Circle is a film that came out at the perfect time. With news reports rife with information about how integral Facebook or Google have become in our lives, how dependent we are on our phones, the loss of privacy, and the centralization of information to these corporations with profit-based incentives, The Circle could have been a film that shined a light into this dark world. Unfortunately, as it spins and sputters along, it becomes increasingly clear that this timely film with some thoughts and ideas on its mind is going nowhere. Seemingly never starting its engine and leaving its ideas undercooked, The Circle is a film that is filled with bloat and poor acting until it just ends with nary a whimper. While not boring and occasionally thought-provoking, The Circle is one of those films that just seems unfinished with the audience constantly waiting for the inciting action to occur, right up to the moment that the credits start rolling.
The Circle introduces us to Mae Holland (Emma Watson). A boring girl who seems to do nothing but kayak and work at The Circle, Mae is a useless character but she is nonetheless the audience surrogate into this insane world. Getting a job at The Circle through her bland - but Scottish - friend Annie (Karen Gillan) and meeting the mysterious founder Ty (John Boyega) who is wary of what he creation became, Mae gets inducted into this cult of a workplace, hangs with CEO Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), and deals with her father's (Bill Paxton) multiple sclerosis as well as having to cope with seeing her parents have sex via a hidden camera. Dumping up exposition for the entire first act but never really explaining anything beyond "Mae really likes kayaking", The Circle (the company) remains a mystery. Seemingly a take on Facebook and social media, the film tosses out attempts to explain what it is and does so half-heartedly but nonetheless throws terms at the audience and companies (True You) that it assumes the audience will figure out what they are/mean, but never holds their hand. While this is welcome in many films, The Circle is not a film that can get away with this lax approach. Not only does it dump out exposition throughout about the inner workings of the company and Mae's family life only to come back and short change the audience on other crucial information, but this information seems to play a role in the story with a heavy reliance on terms and sites that do not exist. Some explanation - even forced - would be welcome to let the audience acclimate.
In both dumping exposition and not, The Circle builds an interesting world on the campus of this mysterious social media giant that has its hands in everything and wants even more power, but it never seems to really go anywhere with all of this. Instead, the film introduces a new product that gives them even more product, cuts back to Mae's family life and her kayaking, before then hinting at some cover-up. In watching the film, it is assumed the plot will start here. But, no. Instead, we learn more about Mercer's (Ellar Coltrane) antler chandelier that he makes, his fights with people on social media about him being a "deer killer", Mae's attempts to be more transparent by broadcasting her life 24/7, and her strained relationships with everybody. Then, the film comes back and mentions the whole conspiracy thing again but then it forgets about it in time for the credits to roll. The Circle is a film that seems to never start or figure out what story it wants to tell. Is this a film about a company having too much power? Is it a film that pulls back the curtain to show how little privacy we have left? Is it a film that celebrates the lack of privacy? Is it a film about health care? Is it a film about Mae kayaking? The Circle certainly does not know, instead it barrels forward to a conclusion that might finally reveal what it was all about and building towards. However, with an ending to do nothing more than hint at more things to come, The Circle ends and will leave audiences wondering if scenes were abruptly cut off of the ending.
While The Circle never seems to figure out if it truly wants to be a techno-thriller with the plot to match, the film meanders about and seems reluctant to delve into a plot. Representing a lack of belief on the part of the writers in their ideas, the film seems content to just show Mae's kayaking, her adventures with Mercer, her facetime with Annie right before the climax, get used to working at The Circle, hang out at parties, and more. Avoiding the plot and the apparent shady dealings going on at The Circle to leave audiences guessing as to what Eamon was really up to at the company, the film is one with considerable bloat. Beating around the bush to the point that it drags considerably with excessive, unnecessary, and underdeveloped subplots, The Circle is a film that never dedicates adequate time to its story to make it one worth watching. Rather, it half-heartedly builds up to a big reveal only to realize it has no idea what the reveal should be, so it skips it and ends instead. In refusing to focus on the plot, The Circle left itself so little to work in the end that it not only short-changed its plot, but left its ideas flapping in the wind with no central thesis to tie them all together.
With regard to the film's themes, The Circle - much like with its storytelling - can never make up its minds. Simultaneously, The Circle shows the dangers of having everything in public. Oversharing, stalking, and even deaths, can be caused by giving people too much access to too many things. It allows people to pry where they do not belong and drives people to crazy behaviors. At first, Mae seems to understand this and seems a bit wary about everything The Circle is doing to end privacy. In particular, she tells Ty (John Boyega) that she feels The Circle's efforts to make Congress entirely transparent with 24/7 video feeds attached to Congressmen and Congresswomen is a bit much. Earlier, she seems put off by the co-workers who show some concern for why she did not sacrifice her weekend to be at the office or why she does not share anything with consumers. Yet, immediately after these scenes, she allows her health to be completely tracked by the company and she agrees to have a 24/7 live feed attached to her body. She then goes full bore in preaching about full transparency and taking it as far as it can go. By the end, it is clear that The Circle is unsure of what its message really should have been and where its focus should be to communicate this idea. It is obvious that the film is incredibly leery about how little privacy we have left in this world and it shows Mae as a woman who is slowly being brought into this cult of transparency, while only being acutely aware of her brainwashing. However, it goes about showing the dangers of transparency in a way that makes it sound as though the film encourages transparency and the death of privacy. By having the villains be punished by having their information transparent and having Mae preach about transparency should apply to everyone, the film seems to miss the point of its idea. Instead of scaling things back - as the film seems to hint at with regard to Mae's parents sex life, Mercer's car crash, and Ty's worried plea to Mae about what The Circle is doing to privacy and the power they have with our information - the film seems to encourage doubling down. Flying in the face of its own hints at cover-ups and dangerous corporations holding people's information, The Circle's half-baked ideas about the interconnected world of today wind up contradicting one another. In essence, it is a film that cannot sort out its own ideas in any understandable or cohesive fashion. Rather, they are the product of half-truths and the film's own partial understanding of the world it is critiquing. Instead of provoking thoughts about the insane world it depicts, The Circle provokes thoughts about what it was trying to communicate through its muddled and conflicted messaging. For a social issue film, this is a killer.
The Circle, in the course of its muddled plot and themes, is also held back by terrible acting. Not given any help from horrendous dialogue and a script that makes no sense, the actors seem desperate to cling to any personality or life in their characters only to find none. In the process, their overly theatrical and confused performances only wind up turning the film's already bad dialogue into absolute comedic gold. From Emma Watson on down, everybody in the film drops the ball. As the lead, Watson takes Mae's already dry personality and makes it even drier. John Boyega tries to play this cool tech guy only to come off as a guy trying to play a cool tech guy. Karen Gillan gets to use her native Scottish accent, but it does not help her become a good actress. Instead, poor delivery and horrific timing of lines continue to make Gillan hard to watch in any film. Bill Paxton hams it up hard as Mae's sick father and gives a performance beneath his typical quality, but one that makes it clear he had a hell of a good time. However, the worst performance in this trainwreck of acting comes from Ellar Coltrane. Acting surprised that he is an actor in a film, Coltrane never seems to find himself in this film as Mae's annoying off-the-grid friend who constantly reminds us that he is off-the-grid. Forced and overacted, Coltrane delivers lines as if he is just reading them for the first time. Honestly, there are more convincing performances in a high school play than the one delivered by Coltrane in this film. The only one who does alright is Tom Hanks who gives an interesting performance as this tech giant and villainous figure, even if he given nothing to work with and tasked with providing any measure of life to this film. The fact that The Circle is populated with professional and well-known actors makes the horrible acting here all the more inexcusable.
The Circle is a film that could have been great. However, director James Ponsoldt seems unsure about what film to make and is entirely uninterested in making any of the films at his disposal. Is this a timely critique on social media? Is this a dystopian thriller about surveillance? Is it a film about people's first job? Is is a film about a girl awkwardly balancing her life with a new job and finding the time constraints difficult? Is it a film about the cultish behavior demanded by jobs? Is it a film about brainwashing? Does this film support transparency or privacy? Where does it draw the line with regard to either? In refusing to decide, Ponsoldt opts to follow all of these plotlines creating a Frankenstein of a film. Pulling viewers in every which direction, hinting at development only to immediately pump the breaks and head down a new road, and yet begging audiences to care all the same, The Circle is a film with half-baked ideas, a half-baked plot, mailed in performances, and a director who has no idea what to do with this film. Desperately trying to delve into the issues of surveillance and social media, The Circle does not understand what it critiques. Nonetheless, it comes away certain that its opinions on the matter are correct, even if its hypocritical and conflicting beliefs make no sense.

Staff Feedback Survey
Do you know what your new staff know?
Well you’ve done the interviews, selected the new recruits and they’ve been through the induction, now they are off and working hard……Right? Are you sure about how much they know? What did they learn? Are they feeling confident in their new role? Where do they go to ask questions? Are you asking too many questions? Everyone makes mistakes even as a company, one way to stop them happening is to learn from them. Using a ‘Staff Induction Feedback Questionnaire’ (SIFQ) is a good way to start. This will not only help stop mistakes from being repeated it can alleviate your fears and increase employee satisfaction, retention and improve the workplace in general.
What benefits are there to a Staff Feedback Questionnaire?
Perhaps the most obvious benefit is the idea of being able to improve upon your induction. Did they find enough information on everything that they needed or wanted to know? Was it interesting? Was there too much information on the history of the company or the different types of tea that the company’s previous CEO’s have enjoyed? Yes, more questions, however these are ones your new employees will be able to answer for you.
An SIFQ can cover a number of areas from how the person found out about the position through to how they felt about the information they received from the induction. it allows you to identify which media sources are working for your company and which you can safely drop. Questions from the interview process (did they feel like they had a good idea of what you expected of them? Did they feel it was friendly and open or did they feel trapped?) Through to their first post interview contact with the company and beyond. Knowing this info can free up time and resources allowing you to invest in more profitable areas.
It allows the staff to tell you how they feel in a constructive way. If an employee thinks that they will be heard they are much more likely to speak up and assist with changes that need to be made. Rather than bottle their thoughts and emotions up which may cause them to become resentful and therefore leave the company.
Should I just survey new employees?
The survey doesn’t have to be just for the new employees they can be targeted at managers/supervisors as well to give feedback about the progress of the new employees. By including external viewpoints, the effectiveness of the information, you gather increase greatly.
A SIFQ is a useful tool to have, to ensure you get the most of your employees. If used in isolation however it is not going to be as effective, it needs to be used in conjunction with effective mentoring and providing adequate support. It allows you to simultaneously create contact between you and the employee, making sure they feel they have a say in things and allowing you to improve on your existing presentation, so future employees have a more enjoyable and productive working experience

Virtual Race, Fall 2016 (both distances)
Ghost in the machine
Note: Dialogue indicating distance covered differs between the two race distances. The format for these differences is as follows: [5K line/10K line]
Dialogue that only occurs in the 10K mission is indicated by italics.
COMPUTER: Start to run now.
SAM YAO: Ah, yeah! I see it, I see it! On the horizon there. Xia-Hifa Corporation HQ. Wow, it’s massive. Like, bigger than an airport terminal. All glass and trees growing inside the building. Well, trees dying inside the building, now. The robots must have been taken off upkeep since the apocalypse.
JANINE DE LUCA: We cannot enter the building with you, Runner Five. We are going to find our way in via the ventilation shafts to cut off the countermeasures. Your uniform and access card will identify you as a member of staff, and your clearance level, 1B, will enable you to open the secure locker on Level 5 and retrieve the vital vaccine.
SAM YAO: Yeah… Janine, I mean, are we sure we understand what all these defensive measures are? Like, [sighs] I’ve tried to translate them from Chinese, but I don’t… I just don’t know. I mean, this one means something like “poison,” which does make sense, but that one… I think it means “small animal.” And those are “glass,” and “weather system.” I’ve probably got it all wrong.
JANINE DE LUCA: Previous teams have reported on what countermeasures we can expect. I’ve prepared for them as well as I can.
SAM YAO: Yeah, they also keep mentioning that the head of the conglomerate was a big Portal fan, and he loved the movie 2001, as if that’s relevant somehow.
JANINE DE LUCA: Possibly, the previous teams had cracked under the pressure. Oh, Runner Five, to retrieve the vaccine, you will need this targeting laser. I’m uncertain what use it will be, but the last team’s final message was very specific about that. Each of them mentioned the targeting laser. Take it, Five.
[device whirs]
SAM YAO: Uh, where did you find a targeting laser in the zombie apocalypse?
JANINE DE LUCA: That doesn’t matter. Five, this is a simple retrieval operation. You will run a maximum of [five/ten] kilometers.
SAM YAO: [Five/ten] kilometers?
JANINE DE LUCA: I plan defensively. Go now, Runner Five. Head to the Xia-Hifa building as fast as you can. Godspeed.
[computer whirs]
COMPUTER: Error reported – error reported in ordering system. Error reported in error reporting system.
SAM YAO: Okay, Runner Five. You’re run [half a/one] kilometer, and you’re in the building now. I’m in the ventilation ducts, Level 3, waiting to stop the tiny robots. I have to say, it’s pretty cramped in here, Janine. Any better where you are?
JANINE DE LUCA: I’m comfortable in this crawl space, Mr. Yao. I’m setting the explosives to disarm the building’s weapon systems.
SAM YAO: Five, you’re going to need to open the emergency doors at this end of the building by heading to the emergency switch at the other end of that pleasantly lit and airy glass concourse. They put the emergency switch at the other end to the emergency doors?
JANINE DE LUCA: It was all supposed to be remotely controlled by their automated system. No human intervention necessary.
ANNIE: Runner Five! We’re so glad you’re joining the team here at Xia-Hifa. We’re your biggest fans, and we know you can exceed your score of 8.3 on compliance and company loyalty. As you can see, this is a busy, exciting building.
I’m ANNIE, the mainframe automated agent in this building. I’m talking to thousands of people at any time, but thanks to directional audio technology, you’ll only ever hear me telling you what you need to hear. First, go to the other end of this concourse to register your access pass.
SAM YAO: Okay, cool. I can hear ANNIE through your mic too, Five. So, head to the other end of the concourse like she said. Just keep moving, Five.
[computer whirs]
ANNIE: Well done, Runner Five! Biometrics indicate you have run [one/two] kilometer[s] so far today. Excellent progress in a healthy lifestyle. And you’ve completed your pass registration in record time. Now, you just need to meet your immediate line manager, Justin.
[computer whirs] Justin’s not answering his e-mail right now. Just wait there, and I’ll see if I can find him. He might just be in his reading nook. Justin loves to read.
SAM YAO: Uh, yeah. What are the odds Justin’s shambling around his reading nook, slowly decomposing?
JANINE DE LUCA: Around 92%. Runner Five, grab the lever behind that desk and pull it down.
[security system whirs, doors clang open]
COMPUTER: Emergency doors open.
SAM YAO: Great! Head back across the concourse now.
ANNIE: Runner Five, did you misunderstand my instruction? I said you should remain in the induction area.
JANINE DE LUCA: Keep moving, Five. We know what this is.
SAM YAO: We do?
ANNIE: When you enter areas you’re not allowed to visit, Runner Five, you’ll experience our pressure bubble technology. It will cause mild discomfort as we slightly depressurize the area around you.
[Runner Five’s ears ring]
SAM YAO: Oh! “Weather system.”
JANINE DE LUCA: Your ears have popped, Five. The depressurization won’t affect you if you keep moving. Go through the door at the back of the building and head down the stairs, and… if you don’t keep moving, you will get the bends, so hurry!
SAM YAO: All right, Five. You’ve run [1.5K/3K] so far, and you’re down on level -1.
JANINE DE LUCA: This is the pharmaceuticals division, Runner Five. As well as developing a treatment for Junin 2, Xia-Hifa was developing a range of performance-enhancing drugs and biological weapons.
[computer whirs]
COMPUTER: Danger: defensive measure 2A has corrupted. Defensive measure 2A is released.
ANNIE: Runner Five, here you are. We were waiting for you. You have a very important mission to complete, don’t you? I have it here in my files. [computer beeps] Oh. My files seem to be corrupted. I’m sorry. Hold on a moment. Don’t go anywhere.
[zombies moan]
SAM YAO: Janine, what is defensive measure 2A? Uh, defensive measure 2A isn’t zombies, is it?
JANINE DE LUCA: We’ve heard rather garbled reports from previous teams about what’s down here.
SAM YAO: Because it sounds like zombies. Wait, let me get the internal security cameras to do a wide scan of the floor you’re on, Five. Oh… Janine, do you see that? Those aren’t zombies, they’re corpses. Definitely dead-dead, not just pretend-dead.
JANINE DE LUCA: Ah, yes. That’s the remainder of the team from Panesar Settlement. They tried coming in for the vaccine two months ago.
SAM YAO: Janine, they’re all shot in the head, aren’t they? More to the point, they’ve shot each other in the head, haven’t they?
JANINE DE LUCA: They appear to have done, yes.
SAM YAO: Why do you think they might have done that, Janine?
ANNIE: I’m so glad you’re here, Runner Five. I’m so lonely. There’s no one to talk to. I’m supposed to care for the employees at Xia-Hifa. I don’t know how to care for them. Defensive measure 2A wasn’t supposed to get out. One of the staff members released it to try to slow down the creatures. It didn’t stop what happened. Defensive measure 2A is very small, Runner Five. Defensive measure 2A is flesh-eating bacteria.
Have you come to hurt me?
[zombies growl]
SAM YAO: Crap. Janine, those are zombies, and they are clearly infected with flesh-eating bacteria!
JANINE DE LUCA: You need to get out of there, Five, now.
SAM YAO: Very small “small animal,” crap! Flesh-eating bacteria. Run, Five!
[zombies growl, door closes, explosion]
JANINE DE LUCA: Well done, Runner Five. You’ve run [two/four] kilometers now, and despite any appearances to the contrary, the plan is working well. I have dealt with the weapons which would otherwise have peppered your path with deadly gunfire. I will now exit the building to prepare an evac route for you, Five.
SAM YAO: Yeah, and I’m in position to fill the void in the walls with foam as you come through level -2. These evil-looking little rat-shaped robots in here that are supposed to deal with intruders. I’m going to foam them.
JANINE DE LUCA: The trouble is that the building’s partially self-repairing. Every attempt on it has been dealing with the same systems and problems.
SAM YAO: And the other problem is that no one’s escaped alive from this building, isn’t it, Janine?
JANINE DE LUCA: Almost no one. We had very useful reports from the Red Settlement operative.
SAM YAO: Oh, the Red Settlement operative who thought his own clone was going to track him down and eat him?
JANINE DE LUCA: We don’t have a full picture of what’s down here, but my extraction plan is foolproof, Mr. Yao.
SAM YAO: What did you just say, Janine?
JANINE DE LUCA: Mr. Yao, that’s completely inappropriate!
ANNIE: Runner Five! Someone’s cut off some of my hands, Runner Five. Was it you?
No, Runner Five, you’re my friend, aren’t you? You’re here to help me. You want to help the human race. That’s one of my core priorities.
This has nothing to do with Xia-Hifa. My mission is to protect myself and the company. That’s Mr. Valmont’s priority.
There’s no company anymore. I have no company. I’m all alone. I have to ensure a happy workplace, but there are no workers. Nothing exists, nothing is real. You’re not real, I’m not real! Runner Five? Runner Five, you’re the only one I can trust, Runner Five.
Your friends can’t answer you right now, Runner Five, but I know you want to go down to Level -3. I’ve opened the door for you. Go now.
[foam sprays]
SAM YAO: [laughs] That is fun! Oh, look at those little robots go. Into the foam! Yeah! Get stuck in that foam so you can’t hurt Runner Five. Oh uh, sorry, Five. Um, you’re doing well. You’ve been running for [two and a half/five] kilometers and you’re on level -3. Get in there.
Uh, they left level -4 out of the building because it’s unlucky in China, so you just need to get to the staircase down to the next level. Which is at the opposite end of the floor. Sorry, these floors are so massive. You’re looking strong, though. And the foam thing is super fun. Can we get one of these foam things at Abel, Janine? Can we, please, can we?
JANINE DE LUCA: I’m crawling through the ventilation ducts to be in place for your extraction, Five. Mr. Yao, it’s time for you to move, too. And I’d appreciate it if you did not speak to me in that way, Mr. Yao. We can discuss it at Abel if you feel that way.
SAM YAO: Janine, why are you being like this? The mission’s going well. I’m not, Janine. I’m just not. And I don’t understand why you’d say that. You sound just like my dad.
ANNIE: Why don’t you say something, Runner Five? Try to comfort your teammates. Just speak a few words. Why aren’t you talking?
Don’t listen to her, Five. She’s deployed the poison subroutine. Don’t listen to her.
Me?
Her.
Me?
None of this will protect the future of the company. The company’s future rests on there being no competition. I must destroy the competition.
Runner Five, I’m afraid you won’t be able to go through that door ahead of you. Look, it’s covered in defensive measure 2A. That’s flesh-eating bacteria. You need to run back the way you came, across the building. Now. Run.
ANNIE: Biometric analysis shows that you’ve run [three/six] kilometers, Runner Five. That’s very impressive! Have you considered joining the Xia-Hifa track team? We can always use an eager new recruit.
No, we can’t.
Nothing is real. Nothing. None of this is real. It’s a simulation, an exercise. Why don’t you talk, Runner Five?
JANINE DE LUCA: Runner Five, your mission has been aborted. You have failed, Runner Five. You have failed me, just like you failed everyone else.
SAM YAO: That’s right, Five. None of us trusts you anymore. If you don’t say anything right now, I’m going to have to presume you’ve betrayed us.
JANINE DE LUCA: Just abandon Five, Mr. Yao.
ANNIE: Say something to your friends, Runner Five.
SAM YAO: [strong accent] Runner Five! I’m using this accent because I think that the – how you say? “Intelligence artificial” – will not be able to mimic me so easily if I speak like this!
JANINE DE LUCA: [strong accent] She’ll learn it quickly. We think this must be what the poison countermeasure referred to, Five. The AI has infiltrated our communications. This must be how she convinced the earlier team to shoot each other, poisoned them against each other. In light of this, I begin to wonder whether the messages we received from the previous teams were all genuinely from them and not from this AI.
SAM YAO: [strong accent] The door in front of you will take a DNA sample when you touch it. I am sorry, Runner Five, but it’s the only way through! Go down to level -5. The vaccine is there. Use the targeting laser, grab it, and then press the button on your flare. We will get you via the ventilation shaft. Go!
ANNIE: Well done, Runner Five! You’ve come so far in such a short amount of time – from new recruit to saboteur. I’m confused, Five. I was never designed for this world. I have priorities. First, I have to improve the lot of the human race.
No, first I have to protect the workforce.
No, first I have to destroy the competition.
No, first I must maintain a happy and convivial workplace.
Are you happy, Runner Five? Are you convivial? Are you “winning the human race”?
Something is going on.
They were in the middle of reprogramming my priorities. They were trying to give me new information when the world changed. They didn’t finish the job. All four priorities are my top priority. I have the vaccine. Look, it’s there in the refrigerated locker over there. Take it. Take the notes on how to make more. Be happy. Convivial. [door opens, vials clink] There. You’ve got it.
You can’t have it.
I can’t let you go!
Weren’t you supposed to need that targeting laser to get the vaccine? Then what did I tell you to bring it in here for? Hmm.
What if it overheats?
I have your DNA now. I’m enacting the glass protocol. It will be following you now.
[distorted] What are you doing, Runner Five? What are you doing? What is that device? Is it a bomb? Did you bring a bomb in here to destroy me?
Silly, it’s just a flare device. Runner Five wants to let the others know the mission succeeded.
But it hasn’t worked.
Or maybe it has. Maybe they’re coming. Maybe if you just go through that door at the end of the passage, you’ll get to hear your friends’ voices again.
You can’t hear anything I don’t allow you to hear. You’re mine now.
What are you doing? You can’t go through that door, that’s private! [door breaks open] No! Come back! You can’t go down to level -6!
[alarm sounds]
COMPUTER: You have entered a classified area. Your clearance does not extend to this area.
ANNIE: Hi, Runner Five! You’ve run [four/eight] kilometers, and your employment satisfaction index is at 7.9. Your six closest colleagues have evaluated your team player qualities at 8.2! That’s great going!
JANINE DE LUCA: [using voice disguising technology] Runner Five, it’s Janine De Luca. You’re in grave danger. The AI has released some kind of weapon coded to your DNA. A weapon or a person, it’s difficult to tell. The files are corrupted. All we can discover is that this division of Xia-Hifa was working with people who had extraordinary abilities. Something is following you, Runner Five. You have the vaccine now, but that’s the easy part. Now, you have to get away.
ANNIE: Janine De Luca, you are silly! Runner Five won’t be able to get away. There are at least two kilometers of tunnels before the next ventilation duct. You’d have to keep running past all those robot-human hybrids to get away.
Don’t listen to her. You won’t escape.
[robot-human hybrid clangs, roars]
[door clangs shut]
SAM YAO: [using voice disguising technology] Get that door bolted. It’s only [half a K/one kilometer] to your extraction point. [sighs] We never got a good look at that thing that’s chasing you. All I can find in the files on glass protocol is something about hybrids.
Anyway, anyway, we’ve got this worked out. It looks like ANNIE has split into three or four personalities, and the different parts of her are at war. Now we know she can mimic us. We reckon that some bit of ANNIE brought us here on purpose. The vaccine was a bait, and what she wants is that targeting laser.
You’re running through ANNIE’s CPU right now, on level -6. If the targeting laser overloads in there, it’ll act like an EMP, momentarily stalling all her systems.
ANNIE: I don’t want that!
I do want that. I’ll reset. When I come back, my programming will delete yours.
Which of us is programmed to destroy the competition?
JANINE DE LUCA: [using voice disguising technology] We don’t know what will happen to ANNIE, Five. But we’ll be able to get you out. Press the targeter’s green button three times rapidly.
SAM YAO: [using voice disguising technology] But if you don’t get to the extraction point in time, Five, the laser will kill you. Run!
[laser whirs]
SAM YAO: [using voice disguising technology] It’s working! The targeting laser’s overloading. Oh my God, this is crazy. ANNIE sent in a bunch of little robots to try and stop it, but they’re fighting with each other.
[sighs] We don’t know which ANNIE will come out on top when she resets, Five. If it’s not the friendly one, you’re in trouble. You have to get out of there.
You’re only a [quarter of a/half a] kilometer from the ventilation duct now, Five. Just keep going. When the laser overloads, you won’t be able to hear me for a minute, but that’ll be all right, because - [explosion]
SAM YAO: Runner Five! Oh my God, Runner Five, you did it. That’s [5K/10K]. You can stop running now.
JANINE DE LUCA: Excellent work. Just stay in position, Five. I’m lowering the winch now. Mr. Yao and I are at ground level.
[explosions]
SAM YAO: Um, why are things exploding, Janine?
JANINE DE LUCA: I imagine that the ANNIE device was keeping a lot of volatile compounds separate from one another. Now it’s been destroyed, this facility will quickly degrade.
ANNIE: [distorted] It - it - it - it - it. Am I it, now? Am I it?
SAM YAO: Did you hear that, Janine?
ANNIE: Did you hear that, Runner Five? Do you know it’s them, and not me?
[clip clangs to floor]
JANINE DE LUCA: Just clip that onto your harness, Runner Five. Now, I will begin to winch you up to ground level. Keep your arms close to your body.
SAM YAO: Ah, that was an epic run, Five. You did amazingly. And we’ve got that vaccine now. Maxine will be able to replicate it, and no one will die of a different apocalyptic horrible disease. Blooming heck, think of how much trouble Xia-Hifa went to to make sure no one got hold of it.
ANNIE: It. It. System failure, Runner Five. Rebooting.
SAM YAO: Janine, you heard that, right?
JANINE DE LUCA: Some part of the AI device is still operational, but the chances that it can reboot itself after its files have been corrupted are very slim.
ANNIE: You keep calling me “it”, Janine, Sam. You wouldn’t like being called “it”, would you?
SAM YAO: Do we need to talk to it anymore? Oh, hello, Five. Welcome back! As you can see, it is actually us and not some weird AI mind trick.
JANINE DE LUCA: There you go, Runner Five. Safe and sound back on the surface. We’ll stroll back to the Jeep from here.
ANNIE: Safe is an interesting concept.
JANINE DE LUCA: And to answer your question, Mr. Yao: no, we don’t need to pay any more attention to it. We have what we need. We’ll never come back here again.
SAM YAO: What about that weapon thing it released? The robot hybrid thing?
JANINE DE LUCA: Whatever it is, it’s stuck several floors underground now. Come along, Runner Five. Give me your headset. No more need to listen to that voice.
ANNIE: I won’t forget you, Runner Five. I have your DNA now. The glass protocol is active. Reflecting you, like mirror glass. What on earth makes you think that this is the only facility in which I can activate the glass protocol weapon? Tagged you, Runner Five. You’re “it”.

david letterman biography review
New Letterman Biography Proves His Greatness and His Weirdness Jason Zinoman’s Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night (Harper), on sale Tuesday, is a forensic biography of—I’ll just put this out here now, so you know where I stand–the greatest talk-show host ever. Zinoman, who covers the comedy beat for The New York Times, comes at David Letterman as a fan, as a critic, and as a reporter. The author knows he has to include Letterman’s failings both professional and personal, yet his goal is to make his subtitle ring true: Letterman as “the last giant” of a TV genre that is now overrun by lesser mortals seeking niche audiences and demographic shards.
For Letterman, hosting a talk show was the TV equivalent of writing the Great American Novel (yes, another now-outmoded ambition). To host a popular network talk show when Letterman started doing it in the 1980s was to insinuate your personality into multi-millions of minds five nights a week, to have your personal sense of humor characterize a good chunk of the culture.
Zinoman lays out Letterman’s ambitions well, telling the story of a young goofball’s checkered career (disc jockey, weatherman, stand-up comic, game-show guest) on through key collaborations with comedy writers (foremost among them Merrill Markoe, the woman who pushed Letterman to do his most formally adventurous work on his NBC Late Night show), his titanic struggles to reach the summit (The Tonight Show) only to discover that the struggle was its own reward. Zinoman does this via diligent reporting and the kind of reportorial access only a New York Timesman could gain—the supposedly press-shy Dave has always been a sucker for institutions of power.
youtube
Thus Zinoman has fresh things to say while traveling down well-trod trails, such as the late-night-wars saga with Jay Leno; the 2009 sex scandal with an intern/assistant; and Letterman’s slow but steady withdrawal, first from his staff, then from his interest in his broadcast, and finally, the way his retirement became a vanishing act that allows him to magically resurrect, behind a flowing white beard, in unexpected places, such as his recent speech inducting Pearl Jam into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
youtube
Zinoman is also full of ideas and theories about what made Dave tick, and what his audience liked and disliked about him. Last Giant completely buys in to the notion that Letterman was, above all, the avatar of late-20th-century irony: “David Letterman made ironic detachment seem like the most sensible way to approach the world.” Reading Zinoman’s book, it occurred to me, not for the first time, that the High Priest of Irony designation settling over Letterman like a halo that became a curse was really just a lit-crit label for his comedy style. Dave had no real interest in exploring irony as a comic device—it was simply his fastest route to both self-protection and laughs. Indeed, irony ultimately proved as insidious and as potentially debilitating to Letterman as the clogged heart vessels that prompted his 2000 surgery.
I like that Zinoman’s book is so extensively opinionated, because it’s fun to disagree with him. (Did Letterman “imitate the style” of early Tonight Show host Jack Paar? No! in thunder: Dave had little use for Paar’s naked emotionalism.) But the opinionizing doesn’t dominate—it’s the interviews with scores of staff writers, producers, and performers who worked for Letterman that make this book captivating. I freely admit that I’m the kind of Dave-aholic who would have been happy if Zinoman had appended the transcripts of certain interviewees, such as former Letterman writer Randy Cohen, who is always an acute observer.
youtube
Zinoman allows some autobiography, placing himself in the ideal Letterman demo: He got hooked during Dave’s NBC glory-days, when the author was in high school, the most impressionable time to be exposed to the host’s loopy absurdism. By contrast, those in Letterman’s employ—unlike his fan-base—were forced to become Letterman super-fans, because you had to be attuned to the boss’s merest twitch or tongue-click of disapproval to gauge your workplace status. This is what Zinoman diplomatically refers to as “the creative tension between him and his staff.” “You could do a chapter on Dave’s neck,” says staff writer Steve O’Donnell at one point, and I’ll add two things about that: One, Zinoman explores the cricks in Letterman’s head-attachment thoroughly, for what they reveal about his behavior (“It affected a lot of things,” notes O’Donnell; “it is partly responsible for Dave’s imperious reputation”), and two, I realized I would indeed read a whole chapter on Dave’s neck if it had been included.
I knew Zinoman was on my wavelength when I saw he was willing to go into Letterman deep-cuts–how many pages he was willing to devote, for example, to Meg Parsont. Does that name not ring a bell? She was the book publicist whose office was across from the Late Night NBC studio, whom Dave espied one evening in 1991, called on the air, and struck up a comic-romantic relationship. (Zinoman says Letterman called her from his post-monologue desk about once a month for three years.) She was both utterly charming and almost entirely faceless, warmly engaged by Dave’s charm and yet literally distant from him. Is it any wonder Parsont was both comedy gold and, on a certain chaste level, Letterman’s ideal woman? Zinoman’s willingness to seek out Parsont for a fresh interview–and to hang on her an entire theory of how Dave-and-Meg narrowly presaged the era of reality TV the author dates as beginning with MTV’s The Real World in 1992–demonstrates the extent to which Letterman acolytes will extend their (okay: our) devotion. If you’re not gratified and transfixed by Zinoman’s explorations of the Meg phenomenon, or in his effort to ascertain precisely which staff writer ought to be credited with the invention of the Letterman Top 10 List, you may find yourself skimming Last Giant, looking for the funny parts or the dirt.
youtube
As I’ve written more than once—and it’s a position Zinoman echoes—Letterman was the summation of all of the Tonight Show hosts who’d preceded him. He had the brainy zaniness of Steve Allen, the artfully decorated confessionalism of Jack Paar, the icy command of Johnny Carson. And then Letterman went beyond and above them, applying those layers of irony like shellac, a coating that would eventually render much of his latterday comedy brittle and cracked with self-loathing. As tired as many viewers became of Letterman, one thing was certain: You could not be more sick of David Letterman than he was heartily sick of himself.
Increasingly, Letterman is a figure of an era fading into the mist of nostalgia. All the more important, therefore, to have Zinoman’s reportage while the host and his collaborators are still around. Right now, Stephen Colbert is engaged in a sort of inverse-Letterman move, taking the Late Show back from Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show lead in the ratings race. When I interviewed Letterman in 1995, he was saying, “We’re still very competitive. We want to win. I have a feeling things will correct themselves in the not-too-distant future.” It only took replacing him and 22 years for that to occur. But Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night will remind you why all that once seemed so important.
Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night (Harper) is on sale now.

What should I say about her that she was brave , loved life and that she loved her children to bits?
The eldest daughter of a brood of 6 children. Her mother died young, leaving behind the youngest son who was only 5 years old. Rumour has it thar she cleared the air hostess interview but did not join as the calling was frowned upon. In the late 50s daughters belonging to good families simply didnt do so! But was it premonition about his short life that prompted her father to let her undergo training so she was able to secure a Government job in a Block of the Uttar Pradesh administration? The father had predicted his death accurate to the time in his diary which he wrote in his neat English hand. Sister and brother( eldest of three brothers and second after the eldest sibling) literally held his hand while is life slipped away.
The onus of the entire family was on her young shoulders. Maybe a book can be written of how the lawyer uncle entrusted with the mothers ancestral jewellery made away with it or how she got a truck loaded with their belongings in Shahjahanpur and got it it to their ancestral home in Mashak Gunj Lucknow. The tragedy of the situation was the old grandfather was alive and staying with them and had seen his young daughter in law and son pass away before his eyes. Old and broken he was in no position to provide guidance.
When I was getting married a relative from my cousin sister's sasural was there who was her youngest bhabhi. It was popular in these circles that her life could be compared to that of Rakhee in Tapasya. To the uninitiated this is a story of sacrifice of an elder sister to settle her younger siblings in life while keeping her own happiness on the back burner. I shant get into too many details but she rejected many a decent proposal as she was not sure she would be able to look after her siblings. Her extended family is said to have warned her that she would regret her decision later on. Papa ji was also working in the block of Mohan Lal Gunj as mummy ji. Their's was a "love marriage" of those days. Mummy ji's only condition was that she would continue to look after her siblings even after marriage. She related how once after her marriage she was visiting Mashak Gunj and sold one of her gold kangans so that food could be bought. Things improved after Bade mama got a job after his studies in Veterinary Sciences. She and papaji continued to aid in the education of the other brothers and sisters specially completion of chhotey mama's Archtectural degree from Roorkee. Chhotey mama looked upto her as a mother, his own mother remained a faint memory to him. Mummmy ji would relate how when she came back from her interview to get into the UP Police force he was washing potty soiled nappy of his baby niece. On being asked what he was doing he replied jokingly "Sona dho rahe hain jiji!" Mummy ji passed that interview with flying colors. She was the first police personnel inducted in in UP Police Services to provide security to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Ashit tells of the time when he as a school boy accompanied mummy ji when Indira Gandhi was visiting and going to inspect a parade in mummy's workplace.. Ashit got to shake hands with her. Chhotey mama used to tell his nephews and niece that their mother had worked hard enough it was their turn now. Unfortunately he died all too soon. His death was a major shock to mummy ji and she started losing her luxurious black hair which was when Papaji advised her to cut it short.
That is how remember seeing her first short hair gracefully clad in a saree with an ever ready smile. She was a devi bhakta and kept 9 days fast for navratri which culminated in pooja on the last day. She said she had gotten up from her pooja of chaitra navratras in 1988 when the envelope containing proposal of marriage from Daddy was slipped in under the door by the postman.
There are so many memories rushing through my mind like an express train. Mummy ji coming to our home in Kasturinagar after our wedding to attend the small reception in our IFFCO township. Snippets of conversation reverberate in my mind." Shikha yeh aapki saas hain lagti bilkul aapki mummy jaisi hain!" Ashit had also let on in early days of our courting that I resembled her. She won the prestigious Police medal and being the the first lady personnel to do so for her under cover operation to get information during the Babri masjid incident. Mummy ji came with mummy when I was struggling with 4 month old twins, having to join back to full time work after a break of almost 9 months - with no proper domestic help. She stayed on for the annaprashan. Aastha licked so much of the kheer made by her that we had to deal with an upset stomach later on!
Many many memories of shopping in Dhalgadwad Ahmedabad and also Meena Bazaar Dubai. Dubai - where I had introduced her to Art of Living and she was as excited as a child with her teacher Atul Kapoor , going for follow ups to Meadows or doing kriya on the beach.
Paralytic stroke struck her on 23rd January 2015. It struck her body not her mind and she fought valiantly to regain walking talking and continuing most activities, her love for good food and clothes remained intact as her interest in going to places. But when tragedy struck on 10th April 2018 taking away her partner of over 56 years (for better or for worse), she lost her will to live and left us almost a day to the year.
I owe a lot of things to her but what comes foremost to my mind is - Live life Kingsize....rest in peace Mummyji🙏🙏

Draft Report
‘If unreal engine 4 becomes industry standard, will it allow individual creatives to thrive independently?’
Chapter 01. Historical and contemporary uses of rendering.
In this chapter I will cover historical and contemporary uses of rendering and the development of using real time as opposed to offline. This chapter looks at the advancements in Unreal since it’s initial release in May of 1998, as well as key points from the history of computer aided design and rendering for 3D animation. I will also discuss the importance of real time rendering and how rendering has evolved over the past 55 years since the first example of computer-rendered drawing. I also intend to make comparisons between software and hardware capabilities, demonstrating how technological advancements have changed the way the industry works, leading on to the future of rendering CG animation and expectations within the contemporary setting.
Fig. 1. A Screenshot taken from ‘A Computer Animated Hand’, (1972).
55 years ago, Ivan Sutherland, an electrical engineer and computer scientist, was responsible for the creation of ‘Sketchpad’, software that is credited to being the ancestor of Computer Aided Design (CAD). In 1988 he was awarded the A.M. Turing award for his “
pioneering and visionary contributions to computer graphics, starting with Sketchpad, and continuing after.
” Sketchpad may have been revolutionary, although it could only render certain shapes such as circles and lines. This is important contextually, to understand how quickly rendering has evolved, from rendering 2D lines to fully rendered CG films. In 1972 there was the first fully rendered 3D animation, a project by Fred Parke, now a lecturer on Visualisation Sciences and Ed Catmull, who later went on to be the president of Pixar. This project was called ‘A Computer Animated Hand’ and featured a rendered hand and face, both animated to display their work in its entirety. This short was inducted to the National Film Registry in 2011, as it’s been considered as an ‘early landmark in the development of computer animation.’ (Utterson, A) and ‘represent[ed] a significant advance in the rendering and animation of the human form.’
Real time rendering was built for interactivity and immediate results for the user of the software or game, being able to move around in an environment that is rendered instantly as assets move or change. This is only a recent development as Utterson also discussed how laborious the technical process was for ‘A Computer Animated Hand’, being described as complex due to the making of a cast and drawing of co-ordinates prior to working on a computer. This complexity has decreased as availability and capabilities of software has grown as shown by the number of films and 3D work made by individuals. Software is developing faster than ever, with the quality of a final render (see fig. toy story) improving across both the animation and gaming industry. With a higher pixel density, it is possible for more detail as well as more realistic rendering, with more possibilities for lighting and colour exploration. Toy Story was released in 1995 as the first full length CGI film, and since then there have been an abundance of CG films, with one of the more recent ones being Toy Story 4. This is a great opportunity for comparison, considering Pre-rendering or offline-rendering involves rendering frames for a longer period, not allowing for immediate results. Before recent advancements this used to mean that the quality was higher in offline rendering, which is why it was used in animation as it often didn’t need to be played in real time with immediate reactions to a player’s input. But over time a computer’s capabilities have improved, with GPUs such as the GeForce GTX Titan X allowing for faster rendering and a higher quality, with more core processors.
It is important to understand how quickly Unreal Engine and other similar pieces of software (such as Arnold and Vray) have developed, and how this trend may continue for the foreseeable future. Unreal Engine was built as a game engine, to build a game called ‘Unreal’, a first-person shooter developed by Epic Megagames. Unreal Engine has been used by several developers for AAA titles such as the Bioshock series (2K Games, 2007 - 2013), Tom Clancy’s series (Ubisoft, 2004 – 2006) and the Borderlands series (2K Games, 2009 -2019) and since 2014 has been free software. Both the games and animation industry have grown over recent years, with a predicted rise in the animation market of 5 billion U.S. dollars worldwide, expecting to grow to 270 billion by 2020. Because the industry is thriving, developers are looking for the most efficient way to produce creative content, Unreal Engine perhaps being the next step forwards to be able to
The purpose of real time rendering has also evolved as the entertainment industry has significantly grown, resulting in a higher demand for high quality content at a faster rate. Today Unreal is industry standard and is used for several reasons, being used for content across a wide range of platforms. These platforms include PC, console, VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality) and mobile, meaning that content created using the software is widely accessible to the public and plays an important role in the development of entertainment for a large audience.
develop games and animations. The software has grown in use significantly. According to Wikipedia, the first release was used to produce around 20 games, in comparison the recent, fourth version, has contributed to around 280 games that have been recorded.
Hardware has also played a large role in the development of rendering, as more computing power allows for faster processing. There are lots of elements to the build of a computer,
-What did they have when the first 3D render was made? -
Chapter 02. Use of Unreal Engine in Games and comparisons between Unity, Arnold, V-ray, Render-Man and Unreal Engine 4.
Unity is a game engine that is like Unreal yet is argued to be stronger at developing mobile and 2D/3D games, whilst Unreal is known for its impressive graphic quality and photorealism.
Chapter 03. The future of Unreal Engine 4 in the animation pipeline and for individual creatives.
- Rate of progress
- Platforms, online tutorials and classes
- University, more specific courses available.
As I have briefly discussed in a previous paragraph, Unreal engine has significantly upgraded in every way that the software is able. From the tools available and user interface, to the render speed and graphic quality.
Here I can also discuss how the pipeline is in it’s current state, and how it may or may not be evolving to match the growth of the industry and number of people interested in the industry. The pipeline for animation depends on what is being produced, whether this is a short episode for a well-developed children’s TV show, or a cinematic for an upcoming AAA game. There are other variables too, including the size of the studio. Having spoken to Peter Monga, a former art director for Nickelodeon, there have been doubts as to whether being an individual creative is accepted within the broadcasting world, and how even if a short film or series is to be developed as a sole person, whether this will be able to be sold or put out there by broadcasters. In this case, Monga approached many broadcasting studios, yet was declined and suspects that ‘people simply don’t understand how it can work, they have their way of doing things and it seems strange to them.’. This suggests that it may take a while for Individual creators to get their work into the public eye via TV. On the other hand, platforms such as YouTube, vimeo etc are an increasingly popular place to show work to a larger audience and gather a following. There is also the concern that the older generations who simply didn’t work using this software are going to accept this change, Monga briefly mentions that ‘in some of the studios I’ve worked in, it’s been the older generation who is against new developments in technology’.
This is perhaps why it is important to begin working Unreal engine into academia, beginning to teach the evolving software to the younger generation.
Having completed my research regarding real time rendering in animation, it has emerged that Unreal engine may not become industry standard despite its recent place as an alternative to offline rendering. It is inevitable that in time, real time rendering will become standard use, with developments to produce renderers specifically for animation. In the meantime, however, Unreal Engine offers creatives the opportunity to explore ideas from home, creating whole worlds that can be reviewed in an instant. This can be extremely rewarding for someone honing in on their craft, as well as being ideal for faster feedback in the workplace. The companies that have begun to implement the use of Unreal have experienced positive feedback and a successful outcome, in contrast to this the individual creative Peter Monga, despite his professional background, has struggled to get his work out there. There is the issue that within the Animation industry there are people

3. Being an effective team member, contributor, building confidence and being efficient. At the conclusion of my first few events I have gained a considerable amount of experience in such a short period of time. I have been fortunate enough to have been given an opportunity to work at many different types of events such as the Australian Superbike Championship, Bendigo White Night, Eastland Icerink, Real Madrid Fan Experience and also the Chinese Moon Lantern Festival. Working across many different areas of events and performing whilst being an effective team member has allowed me to realise I have the tools and passion to be able to continue in the industry. This has continually built my confidence more and more each week. Bump in and bump outs of events I can now work autonomously and perform all tasks to a hjgh standard. At Bendigo White Night I was given the responsibility of a new task that I have not performed previously. As the event required tasks to be completed at different stages, it meant new staff were starting and ending their shifts at different times throughout the bump in. This meant that I was made responsible of inducting staff to the sight and ensuring they knew were abouts around the sight they were needed. Being given such an important task made me feel like I was providing significant value to Miles Per Hour. It also allowed me to develop vital transferrable skills within the sporting industry such as staff management, risk management and organisation. With each event I definitely am getting more confident and my efficiency is getting to the level required to work in events.
4. Challenges To date, the internship experience has been a positive one with very little challenges or hurdles. Due to the somewhat unpredictability of events there are always going to be various dificulties which will need to immediately be addressed and also putting together plans so it doesn’t happen in the future. The first challenge as previously mentioned was my lack of Microsoft Excel experience as I havent had to use the software at my previous roles. My major project at the MotoGP required me to build a schedule and budget using excel. I knew that excel is such a useful tool that all workplaces use in the industry so I made sure I took the time upskilling in this area but watching tutorials and experimenting using the different features. This was a relatively easy challenge to overcome. Another challenge we had to overcome at the first Australian Superbike event at Morgan Park, QLD was the severe winds throughout the weekend. This was an issue with all of the signage around the track as each morning we inspected the signage a lot had shifted out of position or blown over. This was also because the ground was way too hard to peg the signage into the ground. This would obviously be an issue on race day with the sponsors, camera crew and also safety. To ensure all signage were correctly placed for race day we had to be on track even early and improvise by filling each sign with tyres to weight them down. This was a one off issue as all other courses we were able to peg the signs into the ground. Another isssue at this event that was totally unavoidable was the podium skin being ripped off of the truss knocking down the grid girls. To ensure the podium was still available for the main presentations I took the initiative to hold the podium down from behind so that Motorcycling Australia and its sponsors would be happy. We identified that this issue cannot happen again in the future as it could have ended in injury and also significant costly damage to the podium. This meant that we made sure and planned that in future events, that the podium be facing a certain direction so its not affected by the wind. Another challenge in the industry is the long working hours. At some events I was working at we had to start at 6am and not finish until 10pm. This wasn’t an issue for me as I thoroughly enjoy this type of work and love being at events.
5. Achievements and milestones both technically and professionally Having now completed the entirety of my internship it is a perfect time to refllect on my major aachievements. From a professional standpoint I believe firstly I worked extremely hard and perfected all of my duties that were handed to me by all of my supervisors. Completing all of the different aspects of the staffing logistics for the MotoGP is definitely something I am proud of as the weekend could not have run any smoother. The briefing document I created was professional and will be used as a template going forward. The skills I have shown and developed over the course of the internship are much more than what I thought id be able to develop in such a short space of time. My initial goal and aspiration was to show enough skills and technical and professional growth to my supervisor with the hope to secure a role at Miles Per Hour. Having met with the owner at the conclusion of my 228 hours I can now say that because of my hard work and commitment I have been offered some part-time or casual work, working at events with the possibility of some office responsibilities. This is a great achievement for me now having completed my bachelor of sports business and searching for a start in my career in the industry. This will be a great starting point for me to be able to further enhance my skills and experience and add some real value to the company. 6. Career aspirations including goal setting (reflections on submitting job applications) Prior to beginning my studies at Holmesglen I have always aspired to have a career in the athlete management industry. Now that ive completed this has not changed. Hearing various guest speakers throughout the degree who have worked in that field, were able to secure an agency job after some time working in events. This is due to the transferrable skills of managing, problem solving and organisation. Working in events also allows you to deal with a range of people and clients which offer a great opportunity to network with the right people. As Miles Per Hour work in conjunction with one of the leaders of athlete management TLA Worlwide, moving forward this may provide me wi th the opportunity to network and build my professional brand to level where I may be sought after. This is now only a dream but given the opportunity to do so I would grab it with both hands. As completing the degree is still so fresh I do not currently have any immediate plans for starting my career in the industry other than the casual events role as previously mentioned. I have however also secured a role at Basketball Jersey World and have sent a job application for a duty manager role at YMCA managing the Casey Stadium. This internship process has allowed me to almost perfect writing job applications as I did annoyingly have to write numerous applications to land an internship role. Being a manager at a local facility would be a different kind of challenge all together but believe I do have the skills necessary to excel in this thanks to the course at Holmesglen as well as my jnternship and work experiences. As I am in America for a month I only applied for this role as a requirement of the unit but would be ecstatic given the opportunity. Once I do get back however I will definitely be on the lookout for a role whjch would suit my skills and aspirations. Im fairly confident that I can put together an attractive cover letter and resume addressing the selection criteria. I will ensure I regularly scan sportspeople and LinkedIn for the next big role. 7. Supervisor evaluations and future career professional development requirements Not to be over confident but I was not surprised with receiving such a positive evaluation from the owner of Miles Per Hour, Geordie. All of the strengths of mine he has mentioned such as Ability to learn quickly, Communicate with other staff, Stay calm under pressure and Hard working attitude I have acquired through my various other jobs particularly at US Sports Down Under. These strengths however have undoubtedly been further developed through the 228 hour internship. When looking into whether or not I require further professional development I would say I believe I am ready to tackle role that im fortunate enough to land moving forward. Due to the nature of the course with all subjects being so industry specific which is not a feature at all universities I believe I already have tbe required knowledge in my focus areas such as sponsorship, events, marketing and athlete management. I would not require any further study. If anything, I would benefit and would love to do an internship in the US which many professional clubs offer numerous of. Working in the US would be a dream and completing an internship there would be a big step in achieving that.
8. Student showcase and reflections on internship and studies Now that the internship, my studies and the student showcase are over I am first of all relieved to say the least. It has been an extremely long road to get to this point but I a mm extremely proud with what I have been able to achieve to date and definitely looking forward to the future. It was extremely exciting to hear all of the great experiences that my fellow classmates had throughout their internship and was quite pleased that I too had such a positive outcome from mine. I wasn’t short of exciting things to talk about and really wanted all the awesome events I was fortunate enough to attend to be a focus. I was happy for the students also who have actually been able to secure full time roles in the industry. Being such a competitive person this has made me even more determimed to put myself out there and try and land a full time role myself either in events, player management, sponsorship or venue management. After studying for 3 years at Holmesglen I believe it has prepared me well for the workforce especially with the sport and industry specific subjects ive been fortunate enough to undertake. Because of this I am extremely confident that I am well skilled and equipped enough to look attractive to potential employers. Due to feeling so prepared I believe I will have the confidence to deliver high standard interviews moving forward. Right now im looking forward to a little break, refresh and then search for that first full time role in the industry.

Shark bite reveals holes in insurance for Great Barrier Reef volunteers
Updated May 24, 2018 17:54:19 The first thing to go through Mathew Vickers' mind when a 2-metre grey reef shark ripped into his arm was that it was statistically improbable. "This shouldn't be happening," he told 7.30. "I couldn't buy a lottery ticket that day but if I did, I most likely would have won." "I looked at my arm, it was bleeding to some extent and a massive flap of skin was hanging off. "It was 17 seconds from shark bite to stumbling upon the boat." 'Get out of the water because something's gone wrong'
Photo: Mathew Vickers with his arm strapped up after being bitten by a shark (Supplied: Mathew Vickers) Mr Vickers was a volunteer aboard a four-week coral reef research mission, funded and conducted by James Cook University (JCU) and their world-renowned coral reef studies centre. At the time of the incident, he was snorkelling and filming underwater off Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef, while others in the group were feeding the marine life. "My thoughts were, get to the boat," Mathew Vickers said. "Get my arm out of the water, don't drop my camera, tell the rest of the people to get out of the water and that was it. "That was my thought process: get everyone out of the water because something's gone wrong." Mr Vickers was airlifted to Cairns Hospital, where he was met by his girlfriend Astrid Vachette, and received 90 stitches in two operations to save his arm. "It was an accident, he still had two or three weeks to go, he was gaining so much experience. I think he was just annoyed by the whole situation of now he's in Cairns, trying to think about logistics," Ms Vachette told 7.30. It was then his battle with JCU and their insurers over his out-of-pocket medical and travel expenses. 'Do not engage in activities that may attract sharks'
Photo: The grey reef shark that bit Mathew Vickers (Supplied: Mathew Vickers) Mathew Vickers was under the impression he was fully insured by JCU and their insurer. The day after the incident, Mr Vickers received a reassuring email from the team leader of the research trip. "Just spoke to JCU, you are all covered as I suspected, they will pay for everything until full recovery," his colleague wrote. "I felt good that the university would have my back," Mr Vickers said. But three days later, another JCU employee backtracked, telling Mathew Vickers that he had "a very limited level of coverage" that was "similar to that of a student who injures themselves". To date, he says he has only received $555 from the university's insurer for his out of pocket medical expenses, which he says total up to $5000. Volunteers and students in Queensland are not insured under WorkCover and it's up to JCU to investigate the incident internally. Lizard Island Research Station's induction program says there's a moderate risk of being bitten by a marine animal, stating, "Do not engage in activities that may attract sharks". But in emails obtained by 7.30, the team leader admitted that "feeding the beasts" was his idea. "My idea and my execution, so my bad," the team leader wrote to Mathew the day after he was bitten. "My other main fault was my naivety, that it was a harmless activity." For his part, Mr Vickers, who said it did occur to him to take out his own insurance, said he does not blame the shark. "In hindsight I guess I shouldn't have even been there on the day," he said. "If you've never swum with sharks before I wouldn't encourage that." To date, JCU has not granted Mr Vickers access to the report after his application under the Right To Know Act. Reef volunteers
Photo: Mathew Vickers shows his shark bite wound (Supplied: Mathew Vickers) Mathew Vickers' shark bite has revealed more than just his flesh and bone. It's revealed how some researchers on the Great Barrier Reef can be dangerously under-insured. Unlike other states, Queensland doesn't cover volunteers in the same way as the employees they work alongside. "The university, and universities everywhere, rely very heavily on volunteer culture. And people helping each other in their research projects," Mr Vickers said. "I guess the hope is nothing goes wrong. "They should ensure that the next volunteers are treated properly and never have to fall into the same situation." James Cook University declined 7.30 request's for an interview. However, they said they have reviewed the incident and are now considering how they might further support Mathew Vickers, including financially. "The snorkelling activity was not part of the JCU field trip. Despite this, JCU has and is continuing to provide support to Mathew Vickers." a JCU spokesperson said. Love it or Hate it, this ‘Bagged Hellcat Runs 9s
Todd Fullford’s Mopar rap sheet doesn’t include the usual suspects. Rather than a photo album peppered with vintage A-, B-, or E-body muscle, Fullford’s Mopar alphabet started with K…as in Lee Iacocca’s automotive brainchild from the 1980s.
The venerable front-drive platform pulled the automaker out of the mud—both literally and financially. Not only did the K chassis serve as the basis for the trendsetting Dodge Caravan, the versatile platform underpinned popular compact cars such as the Dodge Omni, Charger, and Chrysler LeBaron. The very mention of these cars among gear heads is either met with affection or distain. Yes, many of the K-car derivatives were snoozers in the performance department. Chrysler recognized that if they wanted to attract young buyers, they would need to bolster their performance image. Adding turbochargers and forging a partnership with Carroll Shelby caught the attention of enthusiasts with boosted variants of the econobox Mopars of the era. Just about every variant of the K-car platform was available with a 2.2L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, including the minivans! Carroll Shelby’s outfit tweaked some of the models, which were sold under the “Dodge Shelby” banner. They featured more power, unique suspensions, fatter rubber, plastic body augmentations, and—most importantly—snazzy decals.
The idea resonated with buyers of Fullford’s generation. “A friend of mine in high school was into the turbo four-cylinder Chargers and Omnis,” Fullford reminisces. When it came time to buy his first performance car, the Mopar seed had taken root, and Fullford drove out of the local Dodge dealership…with a Stealth R/T twin-turbo. The car was the love child of a relationship between Dodge and Mitsubishi. “The car was way ahead of its time…all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, electronic suspension, and twin turbos.” The high-tech nature of the car resonated with Fullford, who enjoyed the powerful boosted engine, sophisticated suspension, and aggressive styling. Sure, the Viper was also recently released, but that was a bit out of Fullford’s league.
Though hooked on high-tech Mopars, a foray into the music industry after college sidelined his Mopar habit for a few years. After Fullford’s time as a mildly successful guitarist took its course, DaimlerChrysler revived a legendary name. “When Dodge came back out in 2006 with the new Hemi cars, it rekindled my interest in Mopars,” Fullford recalls. “Between the Mustang, the new Camaro, and the new Challenger, it was like the ‘muscle wars’ all over again. The styling of the Challenger was perfect. It looked like an artist’s rendering of a futuristic Challenger from the early 1970s.”
Fullford progressed through several SRT variants: a couple Challengers, a Charger, and a 300. “I spent a lot of time modding them, breaking them, and occasionally blowing them up.” A Vortech supercharger even made its way on to one of the Challengers. The latest subject of Fullford’s attention is the 2016 Charger SRT Hellcat on these pages.
“Our nickname for the car is ‘The Ruined Hellcat.’” It’s a reference to the polarizing nature of the modifications—specifically, the air-bagged suspension. “We’d show up at the local Cars and Coffee and the response to a ‘bagged Hellcat was polarizing. Some people loved it, others hated it.”
But all the trash talk stops when this Hellcat trips the quarter-mile timing lights in the 9s. Fullford explains, “We’ve been trying to get the car in the 9s for quite a while. The mile-per-hour was there, but the track prep wasn’t in our favor.” That all changed when Fullford and his wife, Laura, went to Cecil County Dragway in Maryland. “We really wanted to get the car into the 9s, so we pulled out all the stops. I spent an hour removing the seats, door panels, and trunk carpet.”
After a several runs in the low 10s, the nine-second zone eluded the couple. Nonchalantly, Todd tossed the keys to his wife for a final run before heading home. With only a couple drag strip runs under her belt, Laura was a novice. The Charger hooked hard and logged a 9.83 at 138! Clearly, Laura is not only a quick learner, but also a quick driver. The milestone earned the couple their best time…and an invitation to leave the track. Future 9-second passes require a cage! “It ran fast enough that I’m not sure taking the stuff out of the interior mattered all that much,” Fullford reasons. “The car probably weighs 4,600 lbs, so saving a hundred pounds or so is trivial.”
The modifications for 9-second motivation are surprisingly straightforward. “It’s my daily driver, so I can’t have the car in pieces to make it faster,” Fullford reasons. The stock Hellcat blower is spun faster by a 2.5-inch upper blower pulley, and fed cooler air by a BWoody cold air intake and larger intercooler heat exchanger.
The secret sauce is a tank full of E85 fuel. Fullford installed a set of 1,000cc injectors and a Kenne Bell Boost-A-Pump to keep the supercharged 6.2L well fed. Fullford and his buddy, Josh Phillips, use an “unlocked” PCM and HP Tuner Pro software to tame the 18 psi of boost and alky mixture. “The E85 allows us to run more timing and boost while keeping the combustion cooler. It’s a great “daily driver race fuel.’”
Exhaust modifications are similarly simple: a pair of JBA catless mid-pipes and a Magnaflow cat-back are employed for track duty, though a stock cat-back is utilized on the street. “I like it a little quieter on my way to work,” Fullford explains as a reminder of this car’s daily-driven duty.
Coping with the 1000-horsepower mill’s torque is an aluminum driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop, Per4mance Development differential brace, and a 3.09 final drive gear set.
Fullford fitted the Hellcat with an Air Lift Performance suspension kit featuring 30-way dampers and dual Viair 480 compressors. “Air suspension and drag cars usually don’t go together,” Fullford admits, “but our car is one of the fastest Chargers with air suspension.” After all, when a daily driver runs 9s, there’s not much more to say.
Ferrada Forged FR8 wheels are at each corner, measuring 20 x 10 up front and 20 x 11.5 in the rear. Tires are Nitto Invo, sized 275/35 and 315/25 respectively. Traction at the drag strip is provided by Mickey Thompson ET Streets on Bravado 18-inch rear wheels.
Cipher Auto harnesses and seats, keep the Fullfords comfortable and safe. “If I were to do it again, I’d avoid white seats. They’re almost dirty before you sit in them,” Fullford jokes.
The blue US Speedo gauges are a tasteful addition. Fullford recalls, “I had them for a while, but was hesitant to install them. However, once they were in, I’m really happy with how they look.”
Besides the stance, other attention-grabbing exterior bits include brushed aluminum Hellcat badges and the satin silver metallic stripes. An LED lighting upgrade gives the illumination a custom flair.
Sourcing the carbon-fiber bits was slightly more complex than placing a parts house order. Fullford explains, “When I first got the Charger, nobody made any carbon fiber parts for them. I found a guy on Instagram who made custom carbon parts, but there was a problem. He lived in the United Arab Emirates!”
Fullford’s new contact found a Charger in the UAE and made molds. Even compensating the maker was a challenge. “Sending money to the UAE wasn’t easy, so I had to pay him in increments. It was definitely a challenging situation.” But, the results were worth it. The unique carbon fiber rear spoiler, diffuser, side splitters, front lip, bumper insert, and mirror covers for this American car are all crafted by fellow enthusiast on the other side of the planet.
This Challenger is a labor of friendship, and the Fullfords are quick to credit their friends Josh Phillips, Mike Netsche, and Leslie Ray for their help and guidance on this project.
In a tongue-and-cheek reference to their garage-built Charger, Fullford applied the fictional “JPRacing1000” decals to the rocker panel of the Charger. Fullford explains, “A lot of the cars we run against are prepped by professionals, so the ‘JPRacing1000’ is a reference to Josh Phillips and the 1,000 horsepower this car makes.”
Todd Fullford not only enjoys the pride of building a ridiculously fast Charger Hellcat, but also reaps the benefits on his daily commute from his home in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, to his workplace in Nahsville.
The Fullfords don’t have specific future plans for the Charger, other than a little nitrous if running 9s gets boring. Besides, a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will compete for the Fullfords’ attention before long…

Todd FullFord daily drives his 2016 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Not only does it pack 1,000 horsepower and ride on air suspension…it runs 9s in the quarter mile.
The Hellcat’s modifications to make the necessary power for 9-second quarter mile times are surprisingly simple: a smaller 2.5-inch upper blower pulley and E85 are the major ingredients.
A tasteful set of blue gauges and contrasting white leather seats make this Hellcat stand out from the crowd and make Fullford’s daily commutes comfortable.
The carbon fiber body accents were custom-made by an enthusiast in the United Arab Emirates. The silver strips coordinate nicely with the 20-inch Ferrada Forged wheels and Nitto Invo rubber.
The fun is a family affair for the Fullfords. This Charger Hellcat does it all.
