When Preparation Met Opportunity: Success as defined by an emerging Interactive Media Professional
The Arrangement
Employment is a relationship between two parties - the one being the employer, and the other being the employee. Usually based on a contract, the employee will contribute expertise/labour and is usually hired to preform specific duties for the employee. This is the job. The quintessential difference between entrepreneurship and employment is that the entrepreneur is both the employer and the employee. Another difference - the amount of risk incurred, whereas an employee has a relatively low amount of risk. In most situations, the employee is only responsible for their work responsibilities during the designated business hours and this is ideal for an individual who wants a higher degree of stability and predictability within for their career. The definition of an entrepreneur is someone who “undertakes an enterprise.” This means an entrepreneur is someone who starts a new organization, or takes on an existing organization with the intent to revitalize it. This most commonly manifests in the form of self-employment. This is the arrangement deemed entrepreneurship.
The Industry
The Interactive Digital Media industry includes visual effects, animation, digital media, video games development and other interactive media, as well as film and TV production. There are an abundance of opportunities for digital media professionals to branch out on their own and specialize. In Canada, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec are hubs for interactive digital media professionals. Vancouver and the GTA(Greater Toronto Area) are in fact two of the largest clusters of digital entertainment and interactive media in North America. To understand the impact, in 2011, $2.5 billion of the $3.8 billion in total gross annual revenue was a direct result of interactive digital media production. Metropolises like Toronto and Vancouver are perfect ecosystems for harnessing digital potential. Over 1,300 companies are involved in British Columbia’s digital entertainment/interactive media sector, creating innovative products in wireless and mobile video gaming, animation, visual effects, web 2.0, social media, interactive marketing and e-learning. There are over 600 digital media companies, employing about 16, 000 people in BC and generating $2.3 billion in annual sales. On the other side of the country, the GTA and Montreal area make up the other side of the Canadian IDM industry making new $2 billion in gross annual revenue. Today, these areas are thriving and expanding as interest and opportunities increase.
There are three sectors of interactive digital media: visual effects and animation, video games and interactive media, film and television production. As people started to recognize the importance of an interactive media specialist in their organization, educational programming was crafted created, enrollment increased and the number of roles available in the industry increased. This is a great time for students and graduates who plan to join the industry because of the demand is increasing exponentially. For some, including myself, this industry is the perfect marriage of marketing, technology and design. It harnesses perspectives from a variety of disciplines. It offers individuals niche opportunities to express themselves in the corporate world. Keeping in mind not every job is suited for every individual; this type of recognition attracts a certain type of personality. This means more flexibility and control over your own process.
However, with great things, there are great responsibilities. I believe the toughest decision when I complete my education will be what direction do I take? Do I venture on my own for the chance to be my own employer doing things the way I want things to be done? Do I opt for a chance to build my own brand and identity as a creative mind or should I take the less risky route and create someone else’s ideas on someone else’s terms? SO I opt for the less risky route, and have a reliable wage, benefits, and explicit hours of operation?
Although many employment arrangements exist in today’s industry, essentially, it boils down to being the employer or being the employee. As someone emerging in unmarked territory of the industry, there gives a sense of discovery and liberation. Following the traditional path to becoming the employer – student, junior position, senior position, management, etc - these days is more of a challenge because of the competition in the job market. Corporations are leaning more towards contract positions, so one’s time with a company is often limited anyway. Being an entrepreneur places me in the management position with control over client relationships, projects, and resources. For individuals who don’t feel they fit the mold of corporate tradition, entrepreneurship offers a unique space to define.
#FunFact for #CanadiansEh
The Canadian government offers a variety of funding for entrepreneurs and small businesses as a plan to grow and sustain our economy. Right now, innovation hubs are dedicated to supporting individuals who want to venture on their own and create their own legacy. But the risk affects the decision the most. To be an interactive media professional at this time in Canada is great because the opportunities are endless. As the world transforms digitally, the need for the IDM expertise will increase.
But the success is not guaranteed. There is a quote that has always stuck with me and has resonated whenever I stumble upon the career crossroad.
Success comes from the meeting of opportunity and preparation.
There is no formula, and so success can be defined in a number of ways. The first step is defining what success means to you. When you know what you are trying to achieve, the paths to that plan begin to appear. There are several paths to our ultimate goals. This is where we are challenged, and must challenge ourselves. What are some of my pathways? Education? Volunteer? Internship? Freelance? Junior Entry-Level? Self-employ? This is an industry that relies on one’s technical ability as much as their social ability. Always remember to network with professionals to learn from those who are doing. Everything you do on this path is to prepare for the opportunity. You’re building knowledge, developing your skill, and creating a network. This is your brand and reputation. When the opportunity to exemplify everything you have prepared for, you will excel.
I once read a statement that said the average millionaire has 7 sources of income. What is great about the industry is that it offers a chance to have many eggs in many baskets.
