Cassian x f!reader

Part 1

AN: Thanks for the love for part 1. I hope you enjoy this next part

Summary: Cassian has questions about the female living with him for the next six months. As it turns out, you have a few questions of your own.

Warnings: implied trama, references to war and gore, sexual tension

Word count: 2416

Cassian watched you in the days that followed that first meeting in the depths of the library. He watched for any sign of that slithering piece of daylight, so like his brother's shadows, as you breezed in and out of the House of Wind. You never stayed for long, only bothering to make a short appearance each morning for breakfast before disappearing into the dust covered stacks. You would emerge hours later to very quickly eat dinner and then retire to the bedroom he and Azriel had cleaned out for you all those weeks ago; when Rhys had told them about the Day Court researcher who would be staying with them at the house for six months at Helion's request. The Day Lord didn't say why he wanted you to come to the Night Court when his many libraries were said to be far more impressive than the one you now worked in. Or, at least, if he did, then Rhys had decided not to share that information. And he supposed it didn't matter, not really, as your presence had proven to be more or less inconsequential to the General.

Still, he couldn't help but idly wonder at the reasons your High Lord had ordered you here. If it was really for research purposes or some other, potentially sensitive, reason. If it was the former, then you were being remarkably secretive about your interests. Even Gwen couldn't make heads or tails of what you could possibly be looking into when she'd taken a sly glance at the titles of books you'd gathered on your table one day. It ranged anywhere from the creation myths of the world, to personal memoirs of seemingly random individuals, to even children's stories. It peaked all the female's interests during their morning training sessions and had been a topic of debate through their opening stretches more often than he cared for.

And, if it was the latter… if there was potentially a secret, sensitive reason for your presence, then he supposed it wasn't his business to pry. Mother knew he sometimes needed the space and time to deal with his own shit. He just hoped that when you were ready, you had someone to talk to about whatever it was that left your gaze vacant most nights when he sat across from you at dinner. Someone who understood whatever it was that sent you into the dark.

“Good morning…” he trailed off as he entered the dining room one morning, about a week after that first meeting. He looked to your usual spot at the table only to find it empty, not even a whiff of your scent to let him know if you had simply gotten an early start. But, before the frown could fully set on his face, a glimmer in the corner caught his eye. Turning towards the window, he saw that slip of daylight drift across the floor towards the veranda that overlooked the city far below and…

Cassian's breath caught in his chest, and he shifted onto his back foot. You had dragged a small table and a chair out to the railing and were sunning your perfect face in the early morning light. The golden rays of the sun that you alway glowed with seemed to almost sparkle as sunbeams danced across your skin.The wind gently flowing through your hair carried your scent to him where he now stood in the doorway, watching you. It was impossible for someone to be that stunning, that unendingly beautiful, and yet he found himself mesmerized every time he saw you.

“Are you going to stand there gawking all morning?” Your question came out as a sigh, your voice like a melody he once heard.

Cassian shifted on his feet, his wings tucking in. “I didn't mean to stare.” He hadn't, but he often found he couldn't help himself when it came to you.

“Males never do,” your voice was dry as you opened up your eyes to look towards him. “It would seem that your entire species is incapable of restraint.”

He gave you a halfway cocky grin, “Are all Day Court females so full of themselves? Or are you just a special case?”

That earned him a smirk, “Sit, General. Eat with me.” He looked down to see another chair, this one with a low back to accommodate his wings, appear opposite yours. A plate of his preferred breakfast was already waiting for him.

You went back to warming your face in the gentle morning light as he took his seat. Head tipped back, eyes closed, all emotions drained from your features as the sunbeams flitted across them. Warm and welcoming, you breathed into the wind as Cassian ate his food. A sort of comforting quiet passing between you for a time.

“I never thanked you,” you spoke when he was nearly finished with his breakfast.

He looked up at you slowly, “What for?”

“Coming to check on me,” you admitted, almost sheepishly. “It was a kindness. I should have thanked you.”

He shrugged as he resumed eating, “Clotho asked me too. Plus, it's not like it was terribly difficult to just pop in.”

You raised an eyebrow, a sort of thoughtful confusion in your eyes, “Do you not fear the lower levels?” He went still for a moment, “I heard that you and the High Lady had a terrible experience down there.”

It was his turn to raise an eyebrow. “Have you been asking about me, Y/N?” You blushed and Cauldron damn him if it wasn't the most lovely thing he'd seen in the last decade, at least.

You waved off his question, “I merely overheard a few of the Priestesses speaking about it when I was fetching another book for my research.”

He studied you for a moment. His gaze was far more assessing than you thought the General was capable of before he set down his fork and leaned back in his chair. For a moment, you thought maybe you had offended him, that you had brought up some terrible thing he'd rather not speak on. But he offered you an easy smile even as he crossed his arms over his chest. “How about this,” he began, a spark of mischief in those hazel eyes. “A question for a question. If you're so curious, we can get to know each other that way.”

You let out a laugh, “Are you bargaining with me, General?”

He shrugged, the corner of his mouth twitching up, “I see no reason to bring magic into it, but I will admit I have questions, and you've hardly been available for me to ask.”

Your eyes flashed, and for a moment, he worried if he'd pushed too far, if he'd overstepped in some way. But you just settled into your chair, a sort of challenge in your features that had not been there a moment ago. “My research is off limits.”

He nodded once, “Fair enough. Do you want to go first?” You only raised an eyebrow, a pointed look on your face as he recalled your earlier question. “Right, the lower levels.” He told you about Bryaxis, the creature of nightmares that once dwelled in the darkest parts of the library. He told you of how they hunted for it still after it failed to return after the war. And he told you of the presence the Priestesses sometimes felt when they ventured into the deepest levels. As if something still lurked in the dark.

“I see,” you bit your lip as you thought, and he tipped his head to the side.

“Have you ever felt anything like that? When you're reading in the lowest levels?”

“No,” you sighed, meeting his gaze, “but creatures like that don't usually care for individuals such as I.” A gesture to your body and the faint glow you emitted at all times. “It's hard to lurk in the dark when there is always light.”

“True.” he let his eyes drop, respectfully, to your neck, your collarbone, your- He snapped his eyes back to yours. A knowing smirk on your lips. “Right, my question now-”

“Actually,” you smiled like a cat toying with its dinner, and he raised an eyebrow, “You asked a question, so it's my turn again.”

“Wha-” he frowned, replaying the conversation before letting out a long breath. “Right. Go on then.”

You laughed once before your expression shifted. Your face softened, and your eyes dropped to the table as you seemed to think over your words carefully, “Have you ever heard a swan song?”

He blinked once, the corners of his lips tugging down, “Uh, no. I didn't know swans were song birds.”

You didn't meet his eyes, “They're not, except for right at the end. Just before they die, they make the most beautiful music. At least, that's what some legends say. Some say that they are always singing their songs, and only when we are on the brink of death might we hear the melody. I just wondered if you, a prolific warrior and General, might have… heard it.”

Cassian frowned now as he thought. He'd been in plenty of difficult battles and nearly died more times than he or his family cared to think about. But had there been music? He always thought of battles as a dance, the clashing of blades and beating of wings like a song in his soul. A war drum that called to his very blood. Did that change when he went down? When the enemy closed in and his strength was not enough- When Az was carrying him through the mud, his guts hanging out of his body- did the music shift then? Was there a different song in his head? In his heart?

“Yes,” he answered finally, and your eyes snapped to his, “Yes, I think I might have.”

You held his gaze intently, as if looking for the honest truth in his words and fearing you might find a bitter lie. He didn't look away, didn't falter as you assessed him. That golden gaze drinking in everything that he was and is and would be as if you would never see it again. The moment felt charged in a way he had not anticipated. Like a live wire had connected the two of you, and his blood was electric in his veins. His skin was too tight, and gods, he was hot, and you- you were just sitting there watching him. An unruffled goddess glowing in the morning light.

“Y/N-”

A noise behind him broke the tension as he turned to see Nesta standing in the door to the dining room. Arms crossed, and an eyebrow raised she smirked at him as if catching him in the act of something uncouth. Cassian only raised a hand as if to ask ‘what?’ before he turned back to where you sat.

Only your seat was empty. Your plates were gone, and not even your scent lingered to prove you had been there to begin with. He looked around, even going so far as to glance over the railing in case you had jumped, but there was nothing.

“Good meal?” Nesta asked, leaning against the door frame. The delighted, wicked smile on her face told Cassian all he needed to know about how this morning's lesson with the Valkyries would go.

He cleared his throat, “You didn't happen to see a certain Day Court female jump off the veranda, did you?”

Nesta's grin only grew, “Oh no, Cassian. As far as I could tell, you were sitting here all by yourself.”

“Right,” he stood up, placing his napkin on his now empty plate. “Shall we go? The other will be waiting on us.”

“Oh don't hurry on our account,” she teased him, “You seemed to be staring quite intensely at nothing. We wouldn't want to interrupt whatever it was you were thinking so hard about.”

He only leveled his gaze at her, “Keep talking, Nes. Cause it sounds to me like you want to do five extra sets of squats today. I'm sure your fellow Valkyries will thank you for it.”

The two of them walked away, playfully sparing with their words as they disappeared through the dining room and into the hall. You watched them go, a sort of wistfulness filling your chest as you dropped the glamor that had concealed you from sight. It was a rare magic, true invisibility. One you were only able to wield due to the light based nature of your magic. And one you used so selectively, not even Helion knew you could do it.

You felt bad, letting Cassian look like a fool staring into nothing and then vanishing so even he couldn't see you, but it had been instinct. A reflex you couldn't stop to conceal yourself from view the moment your daylight whispered that someone was approaching and you found yourself trapped within his hazel gaze. It had been almost hypnotic, the way he looked at you. Admiringly. Reverently. It made your heart beat fast, and your blood run hot, and something in your chest twisted with pain. Perhaps it was dangerous, allowing the General to get close to you. Perhaps you should return to the library depths and not return until your High Lord came to fetch you. But even as the thoughts crossed your mind, you dismissed them. Clotho had sent him after you once for that nonsense. You didn't see the female having any qualms about doing it again.

Still, some distance might be a good idea. You chewed on your bottom lip as you looked out to the city so far below and sighed. Not too much, but enough so that that, whatever had passed between you, did not happen again.

Your daylight circled your ankle, a cat begging for attention. Your smile turned soft as you dropped a hand to let the light pool in your palm before bringing it to rest in your lap. It was a beautiful day in the Night Court, so like the warm comfort you were used to back home and yet also foreign and new. Perhaps you would explore the city a while. Take in the sights and delights of your temporary residence. Rhysand had offered to give you a tour upon arrival. To show you all his favorite spots in Velaris. Maybe it was time to accept.

After all, there were many ways to keep a male at bay.

Okay so I was having brain rot about the Yo and Neito as friends AU and kept thinking of some hilarious imo incorrect quotes. So here P1 is.

So- ✨angst✨

Its sooooo hard to write sometimes😩

But anyway, it's about my lylexmilesxoc fic that i asked tips for the other day-

I wanna have some sorts of angst sprinkled in, like I have an idea that lyle's ikran somehow is killed In the battle from ATWOW and he finds the body somehow?-

Also I want ✨trama✨

I am vary unwell for wanting big "strong men" to suffer like this-😅

Oh and I also have the title of the fic and stuff! Its gonna be called "goin' full na'vi"

Since- yk my oc (Syìp) is gonna teach them the na'vi ways and stuffs-

Anyway! Love you!💞

Goin’ Full Na’vi - I like it! 🧡

I love the idea of Lyle finding his ikran’s body. Well, I don’t “love it” love it, but as far as angst goes . . . yeah lol.

You could actually make that really angsty. Like maybe he sees the body and he just freezes cause the shock of seeing his baby lifeless like that is too much to handle right then. And it is his baby. He’s a marine and gives off the mask of a “no strings, don’t care about anything, just doing my mission” person, but deep down no one is truly like that 100%. There’s always something that can break through that persona (like Spider being in danger was able to do for Miles) and I think the death of his ikran could be a huge point of angst for Lyle.

Maybe Lyle had a dog when he was younger or still had one when he was deployed for Pandora. And, as much as he loved that dog, he never bonded with it the way he did with his ikran - was never literally in its soul and entire being like he was with his ikran. That bond is eternal and life changing, and even though the recoms don’t share the same values and bonds with the animals that the Na’vi do, I would imagine even they can’t deny the overwhelming bond between themselves and their ikrans. It would be too powerful to overlook, even if they don’t really understand it fully.

So Lyle seeing his ikran dead would feel like a part of his soul died too. And that can lead into how he handles learning the ways of the Na’vi from there: either it opens his eyes and makes him more open to changing and learning, or it makes him bitter and hostile and unwilling to even try to bond with any other animal.

(Maybe OC can show him how to help send his ikran’s soul to Eywa/have a funeral? 👀)

Also! Depending on if you stick with canon and keep Lyle as the one that shot Neteyam, maybe you can play on that too. He was a huge dick in the movies, sure - but I don’t think anyone signs up for the military with the intention of killing kids. So that can also add some drama with him dealing with that.

(Literally make them fucking suffer LMAO. They deserve it for what they did to Neteyam and they need to WORK to be redeemed. No easy happily ever after for them lol)

Lyle can also go through an entire emotional process of bonding with whatever his next animal is going to be (based on what clan your OC is) and thinking about his original ikran. We don’t see it in the movie cause Neytiri already has her new ikran come ATWOW, but I would think that she probably cried in the days leading up to her taming her new ikran and maybe felt like she was betraying Seze by claiming another.

I think them just trying to learn the ways of being a Na’vi is going to be angsty in general too. I mean (whatever is going to happen in A3 aside), I’d imagine they can’t go back. They lost the war - again. And worse than that is they’re recoms now in Na’vi bodies. They can never go back home to Earth ever. No more seeing their family if they even had any. We never saw how they reacted (other than Miles just for a bit) to realizing they had died and were brought back in a different form. They signed up for it, but did they realize what they were doing when they did? Thats got to mess with your head, being the same person but also not being that same person. But everything happened too quick and I don’t think they really got a chance to process it. Soooo possible identity crisis?

Definitely identity crisis for Miles and then the whole Spider thing are things he would have to deal with.

And them having to learn everything from scratch. No more guns, no more tech. It’s everything they’ve been taught to think is uncivilized - it’s not going to come easy and it might take a while for them to be receptive of it (which could then cause conflict with OC too).

I think they would also use humor like jokes or sarcasm to deal with their uncomfortableness. Miles is just straight up mean mostly in the movies, but Lyle seems like he could be a goofball.

So, I like many a person ended up randomly scrolling through videos and the like in boredom one day, and ended up on a channel called DissociaDID.

And that got my mind a spinning after watching some of the media.

Specificaly, what if Wukong had DID?

I will note, I don't think this is an idea I would openly write a full story about for others to read because I don't think I could do this mental disorder the justice it deserves in my opinion.

However, I thought I might put out the idea for how it happened and my thought for alters and their jobs.

First off, what would lead Wukong to develop DID?

First thing I need to say is we don't know the timescale of Wukong's early life, all that is stated in his tale is that he came out fully formed. But that does not mean he came out fully formed mentally, so within the first 7 years of his life he could have developed amnesia barriers as a coping mechanism for all the trauma he dealt with, and then it developed into DID because of the separation of memories.

As of right now, my main thoughts for what lead to Wukong developing it are as follows.

Wukong back when he was just Shí Hóu (what is currently believed to have been his name or title before he went to gain his first immortality) the original dominate male of Wukong's tribe bullied, beat up, and generally tried to kill Wukong. Perhaps the leading male even put forth the "go beyond the waterfall to become the king thing" and enticed Wukong into doing it in an attempt to have Wukong die by drowning, with it partially working and almost killing the young monkey king, but instead Wukong found the temple and became king, displacing the old monkey as the alpha, but they would make continuous attempts to kill Wukong even after.

As time went on perhaps the former alpha male died in a very gruesome way in front of Wukong, with maybe one or two of the kinder monkeys in the group dying of disease, putting the fear of death through means that Wukong wouldn't be able to control into his mind, leading Wukong to travel potentially days alone on a raft with little to no food in an attempt to find immortality like he had heard of being possible from some demon monkeys.

Then once on shore Wukong met humans and they feared and degraded him for not being human, for their belief he was a demon or the like, perhaps even attacking him till he learned to hide and found a link to what would lead him to an immortal.

Then the immortal had the same beliefs as the other humans and shut him out from learning, but Wukongs persistence led the man to give him a chance to learn, leading to Wukong being in an environment where all those learning with him initially hated or despised him, perhaps to the point of doing things to try and get Wukong to leave but over time they just became indifferent to Wukong, still being racist but identifying that Wukong was dedicated to his craft.

I can't say for sure but that altogether feels like a pretty good recipe for developing DID.

Next up, Wukong's alters.

First up, the original Wukong Shí Hóu, he/they are a trama holder, and would have been the earliest host before a new one developed in the wake of becoming King and needing to not be fearful of the former dominate male or risk losing the better life he was gaining. The Long-Term Effects Of Trama (MasterPost)

((Based off my own personal research on the aftermath of torture.))

People who have been tortured can have a range of symptoms, including:

* Headaches

* Shaking or trembling muscles

* Hearing loss

* Vision problems

* Sleeping problems

* Anxiety attacks

* Nervousness

* Irritability

* Sexual problems

* Depression

* Aggression

* Suicidal thoughts

* Chronic pain

A person who has been tortured may try hard to avoid anything that reminds them of their traumatic experience. This may include:

* Keeping thoughts and feelings separate, and choosing only to think instead of feel.

* They may ‘disconnect’ from the world around them and seem to be mostly daydreaming.

* Since many torturers are medical professionals, the person may stay away from hospitals, clinics, doctors, dentists and nurses.

* They may get anxious if they see or experience something that reminds them of their trauma, even if that object or activity isn’t dangerous or threatening in itself.

* The person may try to avoid crowds, public places, authority figures and anyone who wears a uniform.

* Some may stay home as much as they can, and avoid travelling and meeting new people.

* Harmful ways of coping may include alcohol or drug abuse.

A condition known as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in some people after going through a frightening event. The symptoms of PTSD include:

* Flashbacks, intense memories and nightmares that are so vivid, it feels like the trauma is happening all over again

* Sleep problems, such as insomnia

* Withdrawal from people and situations

* Loss of interest in life

* Increased anxiety and watchfulness

* Nervousness

* Being easily frightened or startled

* Feelings of helplessness or hopelessness

* Irritability

* Aggression and anger

* Severe depression, or deadening of emotions

* Loss of full range of emotions

* Problems with concentration

* Problems with learning new skills

* Memory problems

* Feeling like they have no future

* Problems with close relationships

* Loss of appetite

* Unexplained skin rashes, headaches, stomach upsets and other complaints that don’t seem to have a physical cause

* Thoughts of suicide

“Psychologists sometimes talk about something called the Just World Hypothesis, which is a sort of core belief that most people have that goes something like, "I am safe in the world so long as I do good. Events in the world operate in a lawful and non-chaotic manner, and if I am a good person in the world, I can expect that the world will treat me fairly".

When a trauma comes along (any trauma will do) you have a situation where your Just World Hypothesis is suddenly contradicted by an overpowering event that says, "YOU ARE NOT SAFE. YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL". When this happens, the Just World beliefs breaks, and what is left behind is a very nervous, very frantic, very frightened person.

Any random car accident can become cause for the Just World to break, but most of the time, after a period of shock and fear, many people climb back on the horse, so to speak, and start driving again. The Just World breaks but then reassembles itself resiliently. This reassembly is not a given, however. One way to describe what occurs in PTSD (when the situation becomes clinically relevant) is to say that in such cases, the Just World breaks and then remains broken.

I've written about PTSD before, so I won't go into it at length here. Suffice to say, classical PTSD has three clusters of symptoms: hyper-vigilance, intrusions, and arousal.

First, when you have PTSD you get hyper-vigilant for threats. Since the world has become radically unsafe, you start acting in ways that might help preserve your safety like: avoiding people; staying way from open windows; hitting the deck every time you hear a helicopter. At least these are ways that some Vietnam veterans did it. Other people think you are crazy, but, heck, you are crazy from the perspective of other people when you have PTSD. Their Just Worlds are still intact while yours has broken into bits. You see threats as real that they disregard as implausible. You know that a car accident can happen at any moment; that you could be tortured (or witness the results of torture) again. Others may know that these things are possibilities too, but they only know them intellectually, so they don't really know what they are talking about.

Second, people with PTSD suffer from intrusions. Memories of traumatic events come to them unbidden, and at the worst times. Nightmares, waking nightmares, even hallucinations in the more severe cases, each recreating the trauma in unwanted detail. If your trauma is a car accident, you replay the car accident. If your trauma is torture, you replay the torture. Think about having to live like that; having to replay a capricious and excruciatingly painful episode in your life, one where you lose everything, again and again.

Thirdly, PTSD involves arousal. Your whole body becomes hypersensitive and jumpy compared to how you used to be. Your baseline arousal rate elevates. Your threshold for perceiving danger lowers to the point where you experience false alarms that you are in danger all the time. Your emotional fuse gets shorter too. You lose a good deal of the patience you used to have. You are upset all the time.

A good number of people who are tortured for any length of time, or in any depth will go on to develop PTSD. No way around it. Torture is an effective method for creating disabling and more or less permanent emotional illness.”

Okay so basically Im a artist, so it kind of came in a one for two deal. I'd be like: "oh hes cool drawing" and be like okay next character, there wasnt no meaning to the Ocs I created. Until I met fanfiction through the creepy pasta fandom, people always had the basic key you know F/c H/c (favorite color and hair color) and I usually put myself in, my own description then I started realizing: well shit, I CAN MAKE UP MY OWN CHARACTERS AND PUT THEM IN THE STORY REPPING ME

And so it began.

I had started out...R o u g h...yes but I started small creating backstroies to things I liked and though repition is common at first things change. I went on to writing the same old

"Oh he/she/it/they went through trama and that's why they have that scar" you know the basic Brutting character tropes to "yes my oc has trama, but he's why and how."

I had started creating actual backstories, I started googling things....uh...*cough* to make smut (only female at the time) *cough* or just things in general, how chlothing looked why it looked that way, and it showed through my art as well.

To be honest it really just clicks when you have an idea or something you wanna do badly. You have to get through this mental block if you can call it that. Its mostly putting yourself out there without question that got me stuck. I was like: well people gonna harass me if I do this

Yes it happened: they harassed me wanting me to continue rather than stop and it made me happy that people were coming to me saying: "mood" or "i can so realte" or that gasp and spurt of crazy words that show how excited your reader is.

Now Im gonna be honest: writing comes with brutal readers, but dont let it hold you back, and Brutal readers still take time to get your work notice because they actually usually read it to shit on it-

And its gonna come with really rude people. Period no matter what you write. But at the end of the day: you like the idea?

Good splat some random sentences down on a paper and go: it'll go for you, it just happens. Music also helps alot it sets a mood inside your mind. You could just take your day scheduale change it around to whatever universe you wanr change characters and add dialog and you have a story

You just have to do it, either it be headcannon bullet points or 70 pages of pure bliss you worked on just to loose it in one day- if its stuck in your mind: let it loose

But once you start writing: 2 am? Golden hour

Honey, I think We F*$#@# Up the Kids

The thing about this class that is really awesome is the fact that I can take a day to myself, watch movies and still call it homework. Euphoria took me a couple days of binge watching but still, it was nice to relax and take in films that I would have never watched on my own. Some I enjoyed like MID90's, some I did not, KIDS. Like I said in my last post, I would not want to watch that film again. I have no real reason as to why not other than the fact I just did not enjoy watching it. Well the scene where Capser sucks kool-aid out of a tampon, yeah that could be a reason why not to watch it again.Everything else was really good though, then again I could watch The Breakfast Club all the time.

As a common theme of these posts I have a list of questions that I am required to answer next to me. After watching these films/tv shows, the character that I identified with most is a combination of characters. Specifically from Euphoria because honesty that show is pretty close to society today. Kat is someone I can easily relate to because when I was in High School, I was very much overweight. I never noticed it because I was surrounded by friends that didn’t make me feel overweight. Like Kat, those friends were really skinny and included me in things like going out and having a good time. I forgot what year but sometime during high school I met a kid who I fell head over heels for, similar to how Jules fell for “Tyler”. However, I wasn’t catfished or anything like that but I was very manipulated by this dude, let's call him “Tyller #2”. . We were never together but I was like his side chick in a way. Similar to Jules, “Tyler #2” convinced me to do things that I would never think of doing but being in a vulnerable state at the time, it was easy for him to take advantage of certain situations. For the first time I was very conscious of my weight, and tried all the dieting techniques out there and none of it worked. I eventually ended up being with someone else who actually made me happy and confident. But “Tyler #2” got under my skin again and I eventually broke up with the dude I was with under the false promise of being with “Tyler #2”. For years I was under this man-child's thumb and like Kat I spiraled, desperate to try and find myself. I would confide in friends and they would tell me to get away from this dude but I never listened. This kept going on for years. I ended up becoming friends with some not so great people because of it. Thankfully I got away before anything super awful happened. But back to “Tyler #2”. It was about a year into college that I got over “Tyler #2”, and that's because I woke up one day. I will never forget this but I remember him saying to me, “Maybe you should lower your standards and then you can get a guy”. I don’t know why that hit me so hard but in that moment I came to this realization that I shouldn't have to lower my standards for anyone, if anything I need to raise them. And that is exactly what I did.I blocked “Tyler #2” from all my social media, and when he called me out on it one day I looked at him and said “you are a disgusting, sad piece of shit”. After that moment I felt free. Like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I ended up losing a lot of weight and gained confidence back in myself. I found someone who exceeded my standards and I've been with him for three years now. I haven't seen or spoken to “Tyler #2” for a long time and I hope to keep it that way. There are things I know he has done to girls he was with, things that should have gotten him charged with assault but, of course nothing could ever be proven. That's why I can identify with Kat, Jules and come to think of it, even Maddy.

I guess that goes into the themes these films/tv shows portray in youth. Abuse, Social Pressure and Sex. When I would watch things like this around my parents or brothers when I was younger, they always gave me a look of shock and disbelief. As if things like that don’t happen in today's world or ever happened. And of course when trying to explain to them that things like that happen, they get defensive or even a bit disappointed that issues were never brought up. I think that’s because things like this aren’t easy to explain, it's more than words can explain. A lot of it has to do with social pressures today, I mean social pressures such as the pressures of getting good grades, meeting parental expectations, peer pressure and massive world pressure that is being forced on us today. Euphoria didn’t go too much into detail of social pressure as much as it did with abuse and sex but The Breakfast Club on the other hand oozed it. For example, characters such as Claire, Andrew and Brian each went through their own pressures. For Brian he is pressured by his mother to get good grades no matter what, eventually the pressure of failing a class was too much for him and he brought a gun into the school. Yes it was a flare gun but the principle is there. In an article from the Pew Research Center, a study showed that “61% of teens today feel pressure to get good grades” That alone can cause anyone to go off the edge not to mention the public expectations put on youth, for example, Andrew having to win and prove to his father that he is cool. And how Claire values what her friends would think if they knew she wanted to be friends with the others. All those things are sometimes built up in one person and it's absolutely terrifying. The Guardian article on how Euphoria captures teen melancholy briefly mentions how we are a generation of school shooter drills. (I don’t know if that is meant as a description of how we are as a generation but that's not the point of trying to make). What I am trying to get across is that social pressure placed on youth today is scary, especially since there was a time where every few weeks there was a school shooting. I don’t want to get into gun laws because that is a long post for another day. I just want to get into the mentality of it all because The Breakfast Club highlights an important issue to mental health and what kids even now go through.

I remember being in highschool and my school had a serious shooter threat. My parents still sent me to school because they felt that nothing would happen. Nothing did but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t absolutely terrified. I did not attend any classes that day, instead I stayed in the band room that day because if anything were to happenI could hide in a cubby or run out the back door. Even more recently a few years back when SUNY Orange got a shooter threat, I didn’t even go and neither did a lot of people.

I am so thrilled that mental health awareness is something that is being recognized and taken seriously. The stigma behind needing therapy and vocalizing feelings needs to end, especially the stigma of gender roles. Abuse is a theme that is presented in all the films/tv shows watched this week. The Breakfast Club shows insight on domestic physical abuse through John, Euphoria gets more into the psychological, emotional, physical and self abuse that teens go through. This theme especially is something that needs to become more recognized and addressed. Abuse is not just physical, it is mental and emotional. Nate abuses both mentally and physically by using Jules as duct tape to make problems go away by black mailing her. With Maddy he uses his control physically, verbally assaulting her about how she dresses, oh the list can go on and on.

Sex is a common theme in all the films/tv shows this week and that is something that every teen goes through. At that age your body goes through changes and it’s only natural that it is explored. In todays world sex is not much of a taboo like it was for our parents. But at the same time I feel that it is. When I was in highschool sex was not talked about. It was mentioned once in health class but that was it. No one went into detail, there was no explanation about stds, how females need to check for things, the list goes on. KIDS was a film that went into sex way more than all the other films/tv shows. It highlighted the horrors of unprotected sex, such as contracting HIV. As much as I disliked this film it is one that needs to be seen. The lectures talk about the “Disneyfication” of things today but it's that way of thinking that is hurting the youth of today. I can understand that parents don’t want their kids going through such trama at a young age, but if they are not being taught properly, not being educated they are going to find out on their own. Any issues kids face today parents right it off as a “part of growing up” but when your kid doesn't know what a condom is, or how to properly use birth control what do you expect is going to happen when the daughter is pregnant or the son has an std? That is not a part of growing up, that is just pure negligence on the parents and teachers. I could really go way into more of a rant but I feel that a topic like this needs its own blog and this one is already long af. Long story short, abuse, social pressure and sex are themes that kids face on a daily basis. It’s amazing that there are shows out there like Euphoria or films such as KIDS and The Breakfast Club to make it known that this is real. The world is a scary place, but that does not mean censoring that bad stuff. It means that the youth need to be prepared for a shit world, and if they’re not shown or educated about things before the fact then honey, I think we f*$#@# up the kids.

To make this whole post a little lighter let's just talk about the music, the Euphoria soundtrack was all of today's music, which if you listen to half of them its all about getting laid and doing drugs. Sort of on theme of the show don’t you think?For MID90’s the soundtrack fitted the “skater” “punk” theme. A soundtrack is something that can spark a memory, make it feel relatable. Take you back to a time where you had a similar experience. For example, certain songs I listen to take me back to when I used to be at Billy Joes in Newburgh line dancing, getting wasted and then eating pancakes at the Alexis Diner. It makes me think of what kind of playlist would describe my adolescence. Oof, well isn’t that a trip down memory lane.

I grew up listening to metal, my brothers have their own metal band, so I would be the only toddler sitting on the amps coloring not giving a shit about all the grimey people in the audience haha. It would be only fitting that my playlist would consist of metal & rock. However, as I got older I enjoyed pop songs and a couple edm mixes. My list would probably be:

These would be songs I would listen to non-stop as teen in middle school/ high school. “Fame” is a song that just makes me dance. I mean who doesn’t love a good David Bowie song right? “ARTPOP” is something that brings me back to when me and my uncle went to NYC to see Lady Gaga at the opening of H&M. “Bring Me to Life” is a song that honestly, all kids that are exploring metal/rock come across, the same is said for “Nightmare” and “My Curse”. “Hype” and “Everytime We Touch” takes me back to when I used to go to parties. I don’t know why but these were songs that would be on, I think because everyone was probably too drunk to care. “Shout 2000” is a song that my brother introduced me to, he would have this specific Distrubed album playing non stop and im sure thats why the CD got all scratched up. Ahh the days of CD’s, I feel that I’m part of the generation that saw the last of those things. “Evil Angel” is a song that I played all the time on my ipod. Breaking Benjamin was the best band I ever heard and when I got the chance to see them live it was amazing! As for “Forest”, well, System of A Down has such a chaotic, emotional style that you can’t just help but to headbang to their songs. This was always one of my favorites. As I got older my music taste has expanded to musicals, classical, pop, jazz, kind of every genre but country haha. Sorry country.
