summary: the reader is down for the count with the “period flu” and jamie is there to help make her feel better.

note: i was in the throes of the “period flu”/24 hour flu months ago & it was literally the worst thing ever. this has been sitting in my drafts for eternity. please enjoy <3

It started off as a headache at first.

Initially, you thought it was because of your hairstyle. You had thrown your hair into a ponytail before leaving for work that morning. The tightness being the first thing you noticed when you walked to the office.

As the day progressed and after a million times of adjusting your hair, the headache got worse and your throat began to itch. And worst of all, you got your period an hour after arriving at work, having to ask your fellow co-worker for any menstrual product they had.

Seeing as you obviously didn’t feel well and your performance wasn’t up to par that day, your boss sent you home early and advised that you get some rest.

And that’s what leads us to the present — you sitting on the couch curled in a thousand different blankets as the ache spread from your head to the rest of your body, rendering you sore and completely immobile. Even your eyes hurt, too painful to movie and watch whatever’s on the small television in your apartment.

The soft jingles of familiar keys echoed throughout the apartment, unlocking the door to reveal your boyfriend, Jamie.

The hockey player stopped in his tracks as he closed the door behind him, the sight of you curled up on the couch underneath every blanket the apartment held surprised him. You didn’t get sick often or easily, so seeing you out for the count concerned the man.

“Baby?” He asked, dropping his keys in the little bowl by the door. “You okay? Why are you buried underneath these blankets? It’s been warm all day.”

Attempting to talk hurt your jaw and throat, resulting in you letting out a pathetic and small whine. You buried yourself deeper into your makeshift pile of blankets as another chill spread throughout your body.

Jamie frowned at the sound you made, squatting by the end of the couch where he assumed your head was, gently pulling back the soft material to see your face.

“Don’t feel good, baby?” He asked, softly rubbing his thumb against your brow bone.

You nodded lightly and sighed heavily, the medication you took earlier not helping with your aches at all.

Jamie frowned and nodded in response, leaning forward to press a kiss to the crown of your head. “I’ll make you some soup and tea if you want. Turn off the heater too,” he offered. “Some fresh air might be good later if you’re up to move.”

Without waiting for your response, Jamie got up from his position and made his way to the kitchen, turning off the heater on his way.

“Thank you,” you croaked out, sitting up a bit so you could properly see your boyfriend in the kitchen. Tears brimming at your waterline.

Jamie turned to tell you it was no problem as it was one of his responsibilities as your partner, but cut himself short when he saw you crying, rushing back towards you.

“I don’t feel good. Felt like shit all day,” you cried into the crook of his neck once he brought you into his arms. “And I got my period on top of being sick. Worst day ever.”

Jamie only held you tighter as if he could transfer your pain to him. He gently stroked the back of your head and brought you into his lap.

“Is there anything you need me to get at the store for you? Extra products? Ibuprofen? Chocolate?” He asked, rubbing your back in hopes of easing whatever aches you felt.

You shook your head as you stayed in the same position, feeling slightly better now that you were in your boyfriend’s arms. Melting deeper into his embrace.

Eventually, you feel asleep in Jamie’s arms, snoring away as your body finally let you rest. And he didn’t move an inch, continuing to rub your back as he held you.

He’d figure out a way eventually to get you into your bed safely and soundly without waking you up so he could prepare the soup and tea for when you awoke. But now, he just sat there with you in his embrace, happy he could at least help in aiding you in falling asleep.

I have a dramatic work update which does not affect me because I am off today

Someone has called in sick today and there is no coverage for this person (owing the fact that our Hygienist and her Husband who is an Assistant have had to go home to the US because her Dad is very sick). No one is willing to cover the shift because the person that would have usually done it, my work wife, resigned last week. When she did this she gave six weeks notice. She was told by management that they feel she couldn’t “be professional” in that time and asked for three weeks per her contract because she was “not needed”. They called her this morning and asked her to cover to which she responded “I offered to help during the transition period and I was told I wasn’t needed.”

ON TOP OF THIS: Ostrich Boss (head in the sand no idea what’s going on) had no idea that Gossip Girl Boss had said this to her. She mentioned it in passing yesterday when they were working together because she thought they would have discussed it and he is now FURIOUS at Gossip Girl

And here I am, sat at home sipping my iced coffee from a Star Wars thermos like: “I see we’ve firmly entered the find out phase. Hope the fuck was worth it.”

masterlist pairing: Jamie Drysdale x girlfriend!reader summary: Jamie and his girlfriend are having problems with communication after his trade to Philadelphia warning: none

She and Jamie had been dating since august 2023. She was in her last year in UCLA and he was playing for Anaheim Ducks. He was well spoken and caring, she found him cute. Jamie never thought they could be a couple. In his mind, she was way out of his league. They’ve been hanging out a lot during his free time. She tried to attempt his every home game. 

Jamie was shy. He didn’t want to ruin their friendship so he kept his feelings to himself. She was tired of waiting for him to make a move, and decided to take it into her hands. After one movie night they had, she kissed him. He froze in place but after a couple of seconds, kissed her back. This moment ended their friendship but started a relationship. 

When Jamie was traded to Philadelphia, she wanted to transfer to university in Pennsylvania but he stopped her. He knew it’s pointless. It was her final year and he believed that they could work long distance for half of a year. They made a deal that she will move to him during the summer and search for a job down there. It was easier to say than to do. 

Tell me you’re fine, yeah give me a smile

But I know that something is going on

January went without any problems. Jamie called her at every occasion. Plenty of times, she was leaving her lectures just to answer his phone call. They spent hours each day texting. Although, she knew something was wrong with him. During their late night facetime calls, she could see that his face is not as cheerful as always. He was smiling but she had the intuition that it’s fake smile.

When she tried to ask him about it, Jamie was saying that everything is fine. He was covering his yearning by saying that he’s just tired. She wanted to believe in his words but she felt that something was happening in his life. The one thing that she hated in him was acting like everything was fine when he was in pain. 

She decided to play along with his game. She trusted him and didn’t want to argue over this. It hurted her that Jamie is not speaking with her about his feelings but she also knew that’s normal for him. When he will be ready to talk, he will. At least she believed in that.

And that’s how it starts

When Jamie picked an injury in february, he started to isolate himself from her. He missed her like crazy but he knew she had more important things than taking care of him and his feelings. She was always telling him that his problems are also her problems but he felt too embarrassed to share his thoughts with her. 

She knew something really bad was happening with their relationship. She learned about his injury from his mother. Jamie hasn't even said this to her by himself. When she confronted him, he just made an excuse. She tried so hard to push him to talk to her but he was telling her it’s nothing and she’s searching for a problem when everything’s fine.

Jamie for the whole month of february was trying to convince her that nothing is happening. At the same time, he was pushing her away. He didn’t want a pity party. He was a grown man and he knew he could handle long distance and injury by himself. Although, it was a lie. He needed her.

Jamie believed he’s doing the right thing. He knew that the minute he told her that he’s not fine, she’s going to drop everything to be with him in Philadelphia. He didn’t want her to sacrifice her graduation because he missed her. That was the last thing he wanted to do. 

When Jamie was acting this way, she started to question their relationship. She felt that she’s the problem and that’s why he doesn’t want to speak with her about how he’s doing. She missed his calls and memes he was sending to her. She was certain that she spent more time on talking with his mother than with him. Jamie’s mom became a line of communication in between them. 

Try to be patient, giving you space, but

When march started, she changed her tactic. She decided to give him space. Last month, she was the one trying to keep their relationship going but without him, she couldn't do much. She stopped calling him and texting him. It was tough for her to just act like Jamie is not part of her life but she believed it was the right call.

Jamie thought differently. He felt that she’s done with him and stopped contacting him because she wants to break up. He didn’t react. He felt like it’s for the best. He always knew that she deserved better than him. He was just a shy guy playing hockey when she was an outspoken girl with a bright future in her industry. 

His mind was going in the direction of breaking up. Jamie didn’t want to end things. He loved her deeply but he also didn’t want her to drop her whole life in California. That’s where she was born, where she grew up and that’s where her future is. He didn’t want to ruin her dreams because he was traded and missed her. He felt guilty for not being honest with her, he wanted to tell her everything but his own mind was stopping him from that.

Jamie came back on the ice in April. Still haven’t contacted her and he didn't know that she’s in touch with his mother and knows everything. They haven’t ended things in between each other. She believed they could rescue this relationship. His mother advised her to confront him. Push him to the wall so he would speak.

She followed this advice. When she knew Jamie had free time, she called him. To her surprise, he picked up after the first ring. Before he could even say hello, she started to ask him questions. He was taken aback by her outburst. He tried to make excuses just to not admit her the truth.

She started crying when Jamie wasn’t honest with her. She told him how she felt in the past months. How she was mourning over their relationship, how she had to ask his mother for any updates in his life and how she couldn’t focus on anything else than thinking about what went wrong with them. She asked him if she’s the problem but he hasn’t answered. 

Jamie froze when he heard how she was feeling. He realized that he hurted her more by closing up on her than telling her truth. He felt bad, really bad and didn’t even know what to say to her. After a minute of silence, she hung up. She wanted to give up on them but couldn’t.

She knew from his mother that Jamie is staying in Philadelphia for the whole summer. After graduation, she decided to pay him a visit to talk and sort things out in between them. When she landed, she started to question this decision but it was now or never. Before she knocked on his door, she stood in front of them for a couple minutes. 

Jamie opened the door, surprised to see her. When he saw her, he almost cried. She had dark circles under her eyes and was skinnier than he remembered her. He felt that it’s all his fault. He immediately pulled her to a hug. She wanted to push him away but couldn’t. The smell of cologne was something that calmed her. 

Jamie invited her into the apartment and gave her a bottle of water. She took a sip and started talking to him. She explained to him how her situation looks from her perspective. He took a deep breath when she was done. Now it was his turn to talk but he felt embarrassed. He knew this situation was his fault.

When Jamie hadn't spoken, she said that he could at least have the bravery to break up with her instead of putting her through this hell. This was a final straw. He knew he had to react. As much as he wanted her to fulfill in California where her whole life is, he wanted to have her by his side. Finally told her what he had been dealing with for the last six months. 

After she heard his monologue, she cried. Jamie instantly pulled her into a hug and he also broke down. Past half of a year was a challenge for them but their love was stronger than this. She dropped her life in California and moved to Philadelphia. Jamie promised her to be more open about his feelings. It was a long process but they promised to make things work this time. It was a fresh start for them.

Reader is all for kissing Jamie’s freckles.

And she’s not much of a pda girl, but in the bar after having a few, all she can do is grab his face and place the softest kisses on his skin.

His teammates are teasing him about it, laughing from their spot at their table.

Jamie blushes while holding her wrists, knowing he looks very much whipped for the drunken girl in front of him.

Yet, he’s laughing when he says she’s ruining his reputation, and he can’t bring himself to say no when she asks “one more?”

i literally melted into a puddle after reading this. it’s so cute 😭

reader probably does this all the time to jamie in private so he’s not too phased by it. but in public, he’d be a blushing mess & try to get reader to stop kissing his face as he’s giggling

in this particular instance, reader was dragged to a bar with jamie (post-trade) with the rest of the flyers. she’s not really adamant on drinking, but after cam york challenged her to tequila shots, reader’s already staring the redhead down, shot glasses in hand.

reader truly couldn’t remember how many shots and drinks she had consumed. she stopped counting after cam tapped out, looking sick to his stomach from all the tequila shots he downed.

afterwards, reader had most likely sat down in the seat her boyfriend previously occupied before he went to the bathroom. other girlfriends and wives of the players had accompanied reader in their own private small talk while their husbands or boyfriends continued to chat and drink.

reader wasn’t paying much attention to what was being discussed, focused on trying to spot jamie amongst the crowd of dancing individuals. the only reason she found him was due to his backwards cap, the unique color catching her eye as he walked towards his teammates.

“jimmy!” reader slurred, throwing herself into his stride, nearly causing him to fall off balance as he practically caught her in his arms. “i missed you, j. what took you so long?”.

he’d let out a small breath before tightening his arms around the readers waist, “i was gone for five minutes, babe. that’s not too long”.

reader only scoffed and pouted, “that’s, like, an hour though!”.

and the two of them would just stand there as reader continued to complain about how long it seemed without having jamie there to keep her company. jamie would chuckle from time to time and promise to keep his next bathroom break short for her sake. and she’d interrupt whatever she was saying with silence, staring at jamie’s prominent freckles, eyes darting from one to another.

he’d blush under readers gaze, not knowing why she’s staring at him so intensely.

and before jamie could question her, reader would reach up and start placing delicate kisses on each freckle, being as gentle as she could.

“so pretty”, she’d whisper against his pale, freckled skin before moving on to the others and bestowing kisses and sweet words to the constellation of freckles.

jamie would giggle a little, reader’s hair softly grazing his cheeks, tickling him.

he’d try to hide his face in her neck causing reader to gently grab his face with her hands so she could continue to show his freckles her appreciation.

“stop!” he’d whine, arms still wrapped around readers waist as he tried to fight her affection.

“but, you’re so pretty, jamie! your freckles are so cute. they’re like little stars!” reader would exclaim, kissing the freckles by his temples.

he’d eventually give up his fight and let reader brush his face with kisses, hands softly rubbing her back as they stood there.

at this point, many of jamie’s teammates take notice of his predicament, laughing and chuckling to themselves as they watched his girlfriend press kisses to his face.

cam would definitely be the first one to tease him from where he is, talking about how whipped he is and how he’s such a teddy bear. others would join in and make smooching noises, causing jamie’s cheeks to redden.

eventually, his hands move up to grab reader’s wrists to gently pull her away from his face.

“you’re putting a dent in my reputation, baby” jamie breathed, a small smile on his face. “the boys will never let me live this down”.

but reader only pouted and slumped a little, still drunk and adamant on showing her love for her boyfriends beloved freckles.

“one more? please. i’ll stop after that,” reader pleaded, eyes nearly tearing up at the fact that she may not be able to display her deep rooted affection for her boyfriend.

jamie could only huff out a breath and nodded, hands letting go of readers wrists as she continues to lay more kisses across his face, a wide smile now gracing his lips.

because who is jamie to deny his lovely and beautiful girlfriend?

I quite appreciate this episode because Robbie defends the episode. I like him in general, I think he makes a lot of good points, and I also like him on Delta Flyers cos he's got no problem calling out when things are problematic, etc.

For those folks, like myself, who are d/Deaf/HoH, you probably already know this but several browsers have a captioning option available (as does any apple product), so you can read the captions as they talk. Not perfect, but it works well enough.
