1. Please introduce your chosen subject area. What interests you as potential starting points or areas of research? What influenced this choice?
While putting this blog together, I noticed that the theme that came up time and time again was craft. As a 3D designer, I think craft and its surrounding history is incredibly important to understand and appreciate. It is the root of the modern processes we use today and can help us understand them. I think it will be interesting to research crafts’ history and unpick certain techniques and their relevance in the world today. For example, what crafts are the most popular and why, how have craft techniques evolved over time and how have their uses and contexts changed? Can traditional techniques be utilised or adapted to improve the sustainability of modern production methods?
I am also very interested in how craft differs around the world, especially historically when populations were more localised. I think it is fascinating to see how different cultures take the same material, process or function and create something incredibly specific to that place. For example, how historic weavers in China could use silk from silkworms, whereas places like the UK were more dependent on sheep for wool for their textiles. Craft frequently depends on traditions that arise from a multitude of factors like historical context, location and cultural practices, all of which I would love to explore. In addition to this I can look at how the perception of craft changes based on location and unpack the preconceptions and stereotypes that surround it.
The topic of craft interests me as, generally speaking, it is more sustainable than mass manufacturing. I think this is why many designers are turning to craft in order to reduce their impact on the planet- crafting an object takes a lot of time and skill, which forces the designer to think before they make. I think this is why many will choose better quality and more sustainable materials to work with. Furthermore, the slow nature of craft results in fewer batches being created so waste is minimised. Craft is also a practical way to learn about history and the world around us. Many crafts have brought communities together or forged stories that have been passed from generation to generation, alongside skills and knowledge. The social and sustainable aspects of craft have attracted many people to take them up. In recent years, and especially over lockdown, many have taken up accessible crafts like knitting and crochet. These techniques in particular are popular as they don’t require much equipment and are affordable. This trend is incredibly positive; it has introduced many young people to traditional techniques and encourages them to think about their relationship with sustainable production.

100% Wool fibres making a comeback
Wool carpet manufacturers are working hard and are more motivated to promote their natural products, according to Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) following their participation at the annual Harrogate Flooring Show.
The not-for-profit 130 member-strong organisation, dedicated to diverting carpet and textile flooring waste from landfill, noted a significant rise in interest at the show from the wool sector to move away from the 80/20 mix to 100% wool fibre products.
“The wool sector seems to be getting more organised and motivated to promote the recyclability of their products than they have in the past, hence the debut of the Wool Carpet Focus Group and Campaign for Wool at the Flooring Show,” observes Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK Project Manager. “This is good news for the wool sector and overall industry as it encourages manufacturers, retailers and fitters to promote wool flooring products.
“The presence of wool manufacturers was much more visible this year and highlighted by the Campaign for Wool and British Wool with their eye-catching Shaun the Sheep promotional material.”
Cathie Clarke, CRUK CEO said “I thoroughly enjoyed my first Flooring Show in Harrogate. It provided the perfect opportunity to meet with so many of our members as well as introduce myself to many other businesses working across the sector and talk to them about CRUK and our work to improve sustainability in the industry.”
The Flooring Show presented their Sustainability Award to the 2024 winner Textfelt, celebrating their considerable efforts to reduce environmental impact in manufacturing processes and commitment to future sustainability vision and practices.
CRUK also noticed an increase in the number of retailers who stopped at their stand to discuss options for sustainable and more cost-effective disposal of carpet and textile flooring waste.
“Recent examples include Peter Wallace from Carpet Warehouse on how to improve their recycling efforts and reduce their current waste disposal management costs. Dom Ide from Wholesale Carpets and Flooring Ltd was interested in how he could ethically dispose of his offcuts more easily and cheaply,” noted Julie Callaghan, CRUK Membership Manager.
“From our experience at the show, retailers are keenly aware that they need to be doing their bit to reduce waste and recycle. CRUK membership is a testament to their willingness and intent to do the right thing with their carpet and textile flooring waste.”
CRUK recently launched its new online database www.recyclemycarpet.co.uk  to enable householders to locate their nearest local authority recycling site accepting carpet and textile flooring waste. The CRUK QR code was displayed on the stand for visitors to scan and visit the online portal to try out the database.
The database makes carpet and textile flooring waste easier and safer to dispose of for the public and also provides a tool for fitters and retailers to pass on to their customers to use.

Silky Smooth Solutions: ✨ Your Hair’s Best Friend!
Acrylic Fiber Market Overview
Tumblr media
Acrylic fibers are a type of synthetic fiber that is made of polyacrylonitrile and a comonomer. For a synthetic fiber to be called “acrylic”, it must contain at least 85% of acrylonitrile monomer. Typical comonomers that are used in acrylic fibers are vinyl acetate and vinyl bromide, among others. The increasing demand for the textiles and apparels, along with a rising trend in e-commerce for furniture and upholstery, proves to be great drivers for the acrylic fiber market. Meanwhile, the availability of substitutes can hinder the growth of the market during the forecast period of 2024–2030. In this report, we will take an in-depth look at the acrylic fiber industry outlook and analyse the market share of the acrylic fiber top 10 companies.
Request Sample
Acrylic fabric is generally not sustainable. The manufacturing process is energy-intensive and chemically hazardous. Acrylic fiber is 30% more energy intensive than polyester. Acrylic fabric is also not biodegradable, and its environmental impact is largely negative. The production processes used to make acrylic fabric harm workers and the ecosystems surrounding manufacturing facilities. Acrylic clothing is one of the major sources of microplastics in the ocean, even higher than other synthetic fibers such as polyester. However, acrylic is recyclable, and increased emphasis is being put to use more and more recycled acrylic fiber to meet today’s standard set by the eco-friendly mindset.
Technological advancements are revolutionizing the acrylic fiber industry, particularly in terms of product innovation and performance enhancements. Companies such as Japan Exlan Co. Ltd. Are using nanotechnology also being increasingly utilized to engineer acrylic fibers with specific functionalities, such as antimicrobial properties or moisture management capabilities, expanding the application possibilities across various industries including apparel, automotive, and home furnishings. Japan Exlan Co., Ltd. successfully developed a photocatalytic deodorant acrylic fiber “SELFCLEAR”, having unique nano-voids and nano-sized photocatalysts in the fiber structure. Malodorous substances are efficiently adsorbed through the nano-voids, and then immediately decomposed by photocatalysis. “SELFCLEAR” shows an excellent odor-eliminating effect on various malodorous substances such as ammonia, aldehydes, acetic acid, hydrogen sulfide and BTX gases.

COVID-19 Impact
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many industries had suffered a tumultuous time, and it was no different for the acrylic fiber market. Many governments across the globe implemented lockdown regulations and factories & production facilities in many sectors came to a halt. The supply chain was greatly disrupted as many businesses followed lockdown protocols. According to Textile Exchange, the global fiber production volume had decreased from 111 million metric tonnes in FY 2019 to 109 million metric tonnes in FY 2020.
However, the 2022 Materials Market Report from Textile Exchange shows that global fiber production increased to a record 116 million tonnes in 2022. The situation is now improving as the world population is undergoing vaccination and governments across the globe are lifting lockdown protocols. As such, the acrylic fiber industry is projected to grow in the forecast period of 2024–2030.

The increase in e-commerce for the furniture & upholstery market:
Acrylic fibers are widely used in the furniture and upholstery market as one of the staple fabrics used in furnishing. One of the key driving factors for the acrylic fiber market is the increase in demand for the furniture & upholstery market. The e-commerce space for furniture & upholstery has seen a steady rise due to the ease of viewing products and availability. This was further bolstered by the Covid-19 pandemic as stay-at-home culture and social distancing became common norms. This led to an increase in sales of furniture and upholstery online. According to India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), the online retail market in India is estimated to reach 37% of the total retail market by 2030, the furniture eCommerce market revenue will reach $252 billion in 2023. Are Oriental Rugs Worth It?
In the realm of home décor, oriental rugs attract respect and attention, but are they really worth the money? Because of their durability and potential for value appreciation, they are highly valued as material representations of craftsmanship and history.
Tumblr media
Oriental carpets that are handcrafted and in good condition can be excellent investments, albeit not all of them increase in value with time. Each rug's distinct designs and knots highlight the maker's artistry and cultural background, and with proper care, they can last for multiple generations. An Oriental rug's authenticity, material quality, and skilled craftsmanship define its worth; expert appraisals are essential for insurance and resale. If you want to buy green rugs UK, visit The Rug Shop UK.
Reasons Why Oriental Rugs Are Worth It?
1. Décor for Different Generations:
An Oriental rug that is handcrafted can outlive you by many years. Beautiful antiques that have been in families for generations make up a large portion of these rugs. They are frequently handed down as priceless family heirlooms and, with proper maintenance, can endure for decades.
2. Cosy And Elegant:
It's true that an oriental rug can lower your home's heating expenses! Wool rugs help prevent drafts on wood floors and can lower your heating costs because heat won't escape as rapidly.  Better yet, it will accomplish this without sacrificing the style of your interior decor.
3. Durable:
Handmade with a high knot density from wool, silk, and cotton, premium oriental carpets guarantee both beauty and longevity.
4. Great Art Is Always in Vogue:
Purchasing an Oriental or Persian rug is an investment in a unique work of art rather than merely a rug. Since the resources available to artists vary greatly from one place to another, each artwork they create is unique from the others. Each artist works with the materials that they have on hand.
5. Starter for a conversation:
Every Oriental rug has a backstory, encompassing the place of manufacture, the significance of the motifs, and the sources of inspiration the weaver must have drawn upon to produce the designs. Individuals who recognize and comprehend this, and value every discussion their Oriental rug has sparked.
6. Ecologically Viable:
The best of these carpets are the ideal eco-décor for people who desire something that is both attractive and environmentally sustainable because they are produced from natural and biodegradable materials without the use of chemical derivatives in their dyes.
7. Symbol of Status:
Buying something for their house is one way that some people show the world that they've "made it." This kind of interior design is frequently seen as a status signal for people who possess excellent taste and creative flair.
8. Beneficial To The World Economy:
Buying a hand-made Oriental or Persian rug not only gets you something useful, but it also helps people who live in remote areas support their families.
9. Simple To Keep Up:
To keep it looking great, give it a short shake, a little broom brush, or an incredibly gentle vacuum. The only rugs that might need more frequent cleaning are those stored in high-activity areas.
10. A Piece of Investment:
Oriental rugs are genuinely expensive décor items. These carpets haven't just come off a production line someplace. The best rugs, which are regarded as antiques, are shown in museums across the globe. Purchasing an authentic Oriental rug is similar to making an investment that will eventually yield large rewards.
The Oriental Rug Investment Value:
Investing in an Oriental rug means purchasing a work of art that will hopefully appreciate in value, rather than just a decorative accent for your house. An Oriental rug that has been stored carefully can appreciate in value over time, much like a fine wine. This appraisal is greatly influenced by elements including the rug's age, demand for its pattern, and condition. For example, pre-World War I rugs, like Persian and Caucasian rugs, are highly prized and can fetch prices of $150 to $200 per square foot or more.
But bear in mind that not all Oriental rugs increase in value over time or to the same extent. Even while machine-made rugs might lose up to half of their initial cost, handmade, handwoven rugs can keep their worth significantly better. Therefore, purchasing an Oriental rug should be more about enjoying its beauty and craftsmanship than it should be about worrying about its potential value growth. This offers possible benefits for future generations and guarantees satisfaction even in the event that the value does not improve sufficiently.
The Factor of Durability: A Rug for Generations to Come:
Oriental rugs are renowned for their durability and strength. They have several knots in each square inch and are hand-woven from cotton, silk, and wool. These rugs can endure for decades, even over a century, with the right maintenance. Therefore, you are investing in something that may be passed down through the centuries as a family heritage when you purchase an Oriental rug, rather than just purchasing it for yourself.
There are elements other than material quality that influence how long an Oriental rug lasts. It is also very significant how properly you care for it. Hand-knotted carpets, for example, are well-known for their durability, lasting up to 80 years or more with proper care. Hand-tufted rugs, which are occasionally mistaken for hand-knotted ones, typically last 20 years.
Upkeep and Handling: Safeguarding Your Investment:
Oriental carpets need to be regularly maintained and cared for to retain their beauty and worth, just like any other precious object. This includes:
-Vacuuming gently
-Spot cleaning when required
-Maintaining the fringes' health requires taking extra care of them, getting them professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, and keeping them out of direct sunlight.
For complete cleaning without the risk of damage, professional in-plant cleaning services are advised for handmade carpets, particularly antique or sentimentally significant ones. For regular maintenance, spot-clean rugs using a vinegar and baking soda mixture; for fabrics like cotton, use mild dishwashing solutions to clean the dirtier-looking fringes.
If your rug needs to be stored, be sure to adhere to these guidelines:
-Before storing the rug, give it a thorough cleaning.
-Tightly roll the rug to avoid creases and damage.
-Use breathable materials to cover the rug, like muslin fabric or cotton sheets.
-Keep the rug somewhere dry, well-ventilated, and climate-controlled.
-The rug should be exposed to sunshine on a regular basis to avoid mould growth, insect damage, and fibre deformation.
