I was asked to share my steps in the process of finishing a roughed blank that had been drying for a while. @alex.snodgrass cored and rough turned this bowl in 2017. Gave it to me to finish. First thing I did was to get a chunk of scrap and make a friction chuck. This is held with a properly shaped tenon in 100mm jaws. Next I true up that wood and give myself a rounded surface to make contact with the inside of the bowl. Between centers it goes, the pressure of the tailstock is providing all the support here. The very next thing I want to do is make a new tenon for the biggest jaws I can use here. That way if something happens while evening up the outside I can still go into the chuck. I roughed the outside, more for balancing than anything and am ready to put this into the chuck. Finally got some shop time. Set up a camera and shot footage, uploading the edit to Youtube now. Quick turned a Calabash bowl of Ambrosia Maple from @2treeboyz. 9” finished diameter and stunning figure. 1/8” thick and true round bottom. The whole thing was done with a standard 50 degree bevel. You don’t “need” a bunch of extra tools or fancy grids. You need to build your skills and focus on sharpening consistently. Will let the bowl dry and warp for a few days before lightly sanding and oiling.
