There’s no evidence of terrorism in the fiery New Year’s Day crash that saw the driver of an SUV stashed with gas canisters speed toward pedestrians and collide with a car, killing two people and injuring several more after a concert in Rochester, New York, police said.

The suspect, identified as Michael Avery, 35, of the Syracuse area, died Monday night from injuries sustained in the crash, officials said.

Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith said in an update Tuesday that Avery's motive is not clear and urged the public to come forward with information.

However, authorities have spoken with Avery's family and they believed he “may have been suffering from possible undiagnosed mental health issues,” Smith said.

"We have not recovered any information that his actions were motivated by any form of political or social biases," he added, noting it is believed Avery acted alone.

The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. as police officers were directing traffic after a concert by the band "moe" at the Kodak Center theater complex, Rochester police previously said.

At 12:52 a.m., Avery drove the Ford Expedition on West Ridge Road toward where police officers were stopping traffic to allow pedestrians to cross.

“At this time, Avery sped up, crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and appears to have intentionally been driving towards the pedestrian crossing,” Smith said. 

That’s when he crashed into the Outlander, sending both vehicles “through a group of pedestrians that were in the crosswalk,” police said in a statement. The two passengers in the Outlander were killed and the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The collision caused an explosion and a large blaze that took the fire department more than an hour to extinguish.

Once the flames were doused, firefighters “located at least a dozen gasoline canisters in and around” the Expedition, the police statement said. That prompted police to bring in an arson team and alert the FBI, police said.

The FBI Buffalo Field Office confirmed in a statement that the agency is assisting the Rochester Police Department in the investigation.

Police initially said three pedestrians were struck and hospitalized. That number rose to nine pedestrians, Smith said Tuesday, noting one pedestrian suffered life-altering injuries, and the rest should make full recoveries.

He added that Avery had traveled to Rochester in his personal vehicle on or about Dec. 27 and checked into the WoodSpring Suites in Greece, a suburb of Rochester.

Two days later, Smith said, Avery rented a Ford Expedition from a car rental agency at the Rochester airport and left his personal car in the airport parking garage. Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Dec. 30, he made “at least half a dozen purchases of gasoline and gas containers at different locations” throughout Monroe and Ontario counties. 

A search warrant was executed on Avery’s hotel room Monday and no suicide note was recovered, Smith said. Another was executed on his personal vehicle, which is still being searched and has not yielded any insight into a motive so far. 

Investigators asked witnesses or anyone with information to reach out to police. Rochester is about 340 miles northwest of Manhattan.

The band "moe" said in a statement late Monday the fiery crash left them “in profound shock and sadness.”

“On a night that was meant for celebration and togetherness, we are faced instead with tragedy that defies understanding,” the statement said. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those who lost their lives, and our thoughts are with those who were injured.”

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said a statement: My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims who were killed in the fiery crash that occurred on West Ridge Road last night. I pray for the victims who are still fighting for their lives and whose who are working to recover.”

He asked for patience as investigators piece together the details of the crash and asked for anyone with information to contact 911. 

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the Rochester crash, according to a White House official.

Wyndham’s ECHO Suites Attracts First Asian American Developers

In a recent development, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has entered into 60 new franchise agreements for its ECHO Suites Extended Stay brand. Notably, this includes the brand’s first Asian American developers, Kalpesh Patel of VKB Management in Des Moines, Iowa, and Amish Patel of Precision Hospitality in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Kalpesh and Amish have joined forces to establish NXT Development, with plans to construct at least 10 ECHO Suites properties over the next few years. Their targeted markets encompass Chattanooga, Mobile in Alabama, and either Columbus or Athens in Georgia.

Both Kalpesh and Amish have a background rooted in the hotel industry, having been involved in developing multiple brands, including the extended-stay segment. Their experience also includes working with WoodSpring Suites, previously known as Value Place and owned by Choice Hotels International.

The two developers have expressed their enthusiasm for the ECHO Suites brand due to its potential for growth and profitability, as well as the appealing design and efficient layout of the properties. ECHO Suites’ design emphasizes efficiency and a smooth flow for both guests and staff, making it an attractive option for developers.

The launch of ECHO Suites has generated significant interest from experienced extended-stay developers, contributing to its rapid growth. The brand’s global pipeline now includes 265 hotels with around 33,000 rooms. Numerous projects are underway across various states, with the aim of having 100 hotels open within the next five years.

ECHO Suites offers a prototype with a focus on new construction, featuring 124 rooms on an under two-acre land parcel. The rooms, including single and two-queen studio suites with kitchens, cover an average of 300 square feet each. The brand is expected to make a significant impact on Wyndham’s portfolio by 2024.

This is Woodsprings Suites in a small country town. This place very haunted by the dead. Because the whole place gives off a bad vibe. But if you decide to stay at this extended-stay hotel please note you will probably have an encounter with the dead while you are there on your stay. Because the first time I stayed there in room 303 on the 3rd floor in the room you could see orbs floating around in the room and the lights would flicker and scratching and banging sounds from inside the room sound like something was in the wall scratching trying to come through the walls and you can hear knocks in the kitchen around the refrigerator or close to the refrigerator and the cabinet doors would come open silverware and dishes would be moved. And in the hallways on the 3rd floor you could hear children laughing and playing way in the early hours of the morning and knowing that at time the kids was asleep and then you could see a figure of a woman standing at the end of the hallway looking out the hallway windows. And in the 3rd and 4th storage room you could see orbs floating around in there and even the owner and the employees saw this on camera when they looked at the footage. And old ex-employee of Woodsprings Suites said the was an old man in a wheelchair who or was living at the hotel and then passed away there and he loved to play with the elevator pushing the buttons and then open their doors on the floors that the buttons was not even pushed and then the doors will stay open for a while like he was coming into the elevator with his wheelchair and the doors would close and even the employees and guests have felt temperature changes in the elevator when this occurs. And throughout the whole hotel you can see dark shadows on the walls and see them moving along the walls even when no one is in the hallways. And in room 311 a lady died in there because she choked to death on dinner one night and employees and guests do say the temperature in the room changes and like the are being touched by someone and also like they are being watched. And room 401 had a man named Steve who was once living there long term and then was moved to room 433 which he passed away while being in room 433 and he can be seen in both rooms and you can hear him talking to you but I think he might not know he is dead and can not move on from here. And in room 410 a man who was a nurse passed away in that room his name was Dwight because I was there the night he died in the room and seen corners office rolling him out of the building and he can be seen in the room and walking the 4th-floor hallways. And in room 426 there was a woman named Teresa who stayed for a while then she passed away and that room stays like an icebox and she can be seen sitting on the end of the bed. And I have done spirit box and EVP sessions there and picking up some loud sounds of something that sounds like a boat horn or fog horn and growling sounds and something that sounds unhuman. And shadow people walking throughout the hotel and then being groped while being asleep and being choked and the feeling of something is pushing down on my chest causing it for me to breath and it has done my husband this way to. And then guest bringing in ouija board to try to make contact with the dead or demons on the other side and then me finding it then blessing the board while saying God's prayer before me burning the ouija board. And then on the outside of the hotel seeing dark or black-cloaked ghost outside and across the road at the chinese restaurant called Yamamotos and like invisible transparent ghost walking around outside and even at the hotel to. And you can hear things that like something hitting the trees outside. And also in the stairwell at the hotel something has tried on multiple occasions to push my husband down the steps and growling at him and telling him to get out.

And the land dates back some bad people who owned in the 1800's and I have found out that before the county bought the land then sold it off that back in the 1800's they left unmarked graves on the land. Because you can see people wearing 1800's clothing and children to from that time period with them playing and playing peek a boo with you at the end of your bed. And sometimes you can hear a little girl calling out for her mommy. And in the boiler room there is a woman named Jane who is bounded to the land and when you open the door a big gust of ice-cold air will blow you and give you chills and she has a bad habit of yelling yelling you and she doesn't talk much but she did tell me her name. And I think something bad and demonic is here because I have been hit 👊 scratched leaving red marks that started to burn and so has my husband.
