Plant of the Day
Wednesday 15 March 2023
Flowering in the early spring sunshine Hepatica transsilvanica (large blue hepatica) needs plenty of shade immediately after flowering especially during the summer. The plants thrive under deciduous trees and shrubs on a soil with plenty of leaf mould.

🍄 A test for a larger project 🍄 I needle felted this tiny amanita mushroom in a soft bed of moss. It's little, only about 5 inches total with the cloche. The yarns used for the ground textures were hand spun from when I was learning a few years back. Felting mushrooms is time consuming but so much fun, and I'm in love with this little slice of woodland floor ❤ #needlefelting #needlefelt #mushrooms #amanita #toadstool #woolsculpture #moss #woodlandfloor #natureart #fiberart #fibreart #handmade #etsyseller #yarnart #needlefeltersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJQfchFzxs/?igshid=u3bf8htl4uuw

Plant of the Day
Sunday 1 September 2019
The cool and moist environment of the Attadale Gardens, Wester Ross, Scotland, is ideal for growing ferns. They are displayed in an old quarry and a sunken fern garden with a geodesic dome glasshouse for treasures that need more protection. Under the canopy of deciduous trees the Dicksonia antarctica (tree fern, soft tree fern) plants provide height and unity for this large collection of fern species.

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 10 September 2019
Along the edges of the forest tracks of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, the small deciduous shrub Hypericum androsaemum (tutsan, shrubby St. John’s wort, sweet-amber) can be found flowering. This is a native to open woods and hillsides, and frequents woodland edges in sheltered places, generally at low altitudes. The yellow flowers appear above paired oval leaves and are followed by long-lasting, berry-like fruits that mature from red to black.

The evergreen fern Cyrtomium fortunei ‘Clivicola' (Fortune's holly fern, holly fern) is ideal for the deep shade of a woodland garden. This cultivar forms a more compact plant with erect 'shuttlecocks' of pinnate fronds of about 20 pairs of narrowly sickle-shaped, dark green leaflets.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 11 July 2019
A native of Eastern North America Dennstaedtia punctilobula (hay-scented fern) can be found on the woodland floor in both shade areas and in sunny openings of the tree canopy. This fast-growing deciduous fern forms colonies that can become invasive but it is useful as a ground cover. The fronds smell of freshly mown hay when bruised.

Growing on the woodland floor of New Brunswick, Canada, was the rhizomatous herbaceous perennial Cornus canadensis (creeping dogwood, bunchberry, dwarf cornel). The flowers are white bracts surrounding greenish flowers in late spring and early summer and these are followed by red berries.
