ghoul element perfume associations!
i've done a few scent association lists for individual ghouls, and i thought it would be fun to do one for elements instead! it's a little more general, which lets me include perfume that i really like but that don't fit any of the ghouls exactly. as always, i would love your feedback!!
Usual warning: This might look weird on mobile, but it should be good on desktop. Apologies, I'd fix it if I knew how.
Earth: Dense, earthy, bitter, green scents reminiscent of forests, gardens, and ruins halfway reclaimed by nature.
Notes: wood, vetiver, greenery, moss, soil, fruit, rose, stone, fungus
Rose Fantôme - LVNEA
“Rose Fantôme breathes not the fresh blooming rose but the one that has been cut, left and forgotten. Now one with its surroundings, it blends with the scents of dried grass and lichen, hay, and dirt.”
porcelain roses, immortelle, dried hay, graveyard soil, cepes, oakmoss, oakwood
Duende - Fantôme
“The smell of being lost in an enchanted forest.”
oakmoss, cedar, fir, resinous labdanum, benzoin, tree sap, wild violets, lilac
(i have this one, it's forest-y but also pretty light for a forest perfume. definitely a summery, magical forest smell)
Holy Oak - LVNEA
“Holy Oak alchemizes the aromas of deep, damp oakwood and the dry warmth of cedar to evoke the sound, sight, and smell of a well-worn cabin woodframe creaking against the weight of tempestuous rainfall as it begins to slow.”
galbanum, cedar leaf, petrichor, frankincense, cedarwood, oakwood, oakmoss
Mount Auburn - Little & Grim
“A dizzying array of all the flora that buds in Massachusetts. Fragrant, fruity blossoms and towering trees shading gentle, winding paths.”
fresh raspberry, melon, honeysuckle, blooming lilac, wisteria, spruce
Love Among the Ruins - Alkemia
“An ancient ruin of fallen stonework covered with lichen and tangles of flowering vines slowly disintegrating/returning to nature.”
stone ruins, lichen, tangles of flowering vines
Rochester - Fantôme
rich earth, crisp fallen leaves, sweet tobacco, a hint of patchouli, garden tomato, newly ripened autumn gourds
Vert Sur Le Vert - Alkemia
green grasses, new leaves, tomato seedlings, crushed sweet grasses
Air: Scents that range from cold, sharp, and sweet to thick, powdery, and dusty – reflecting the versatility of air as an element.
Notes: florals, musk, fruit, cold air, dust, sugar, honey, ozone
Lilacs Along the Winding Drive - Alkemia
fresh lilacs, a gentle breeze after a light spring rain, a dusty pebbled driveway, a slightly rusty porch swing, and a small handful of late blooming violets
Hummingbird - Zoologist
“This diaphanous scent alights upon you in a pastel bouquet of honeysuckle, mimosa, lilac and peonies, with just the lightest dusting of natural sugars found in pear, cherry and honey. A finishing dollop of velvety whipped cream melds the tantalizing notes, completing this irresistible and opulent perfume.”
apple, cherry, citrus, lilac, muguet, plum, rose, violet leaf, honey, honeysuckle, mimosa, peony, tulip, ylang, amber, coumarin, cream, moss, musks, sandalwood, white woods
Frost Flowers - LVNEA
“Icy and cold, delicate yet jagged, floral ice crystals slowly melt to reveal a heart of dark florals at the center of this musky and enveloping oil perfume.”
tuberose, jasmine, black currant, ambrette, cypress, elemi resin
Thundersnow - Fyrinnae
“On rare occasions within a system cold enough to produce ground level snow, the conditions are favorable for the right lifting and instability required to also produce lightning.”
cold air, electricity, metallic ozone, gasoline
Veil of Spidersilk - Nui Cobalt Designs
“Slender strands of cotton flower hung with trembling dewdrops… Wear to bless any new beginning and brighten the path ahead.”
cotton flower, dew, pale pink musk, tiny black vanilla beans, Margaret Merril rose, lily of the valley, neroli, honeysuckle, non-indolic jasmine
Mama Gein - Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab
crushed baby’s breath dusted with baby powder
Foxfire - Alkemia
white sugar ambers, jasmine aldehydes, night flowering nardo
Fire: Warm, heavy, lingering, spicy scents. Some fire ghouls smell like smoke and fire, but others smell like heat, metal, or spices.
Notes: smoke, incense, spices, metal, patchouli, wood
Paimon - Fantôme
“This is a warm, regal scent conjuring an endless sea of sand with the hint of an oasis of coconut and dark vanilla carried on a warm desert wind. Golden frankincense, black amber, and myrrh stir under the endless dunes of hot sand, grounding the bright, golden notes that shine under the unrelenting sun.”
hot sands, frankincense, myrrh, sun-bleached parchment, vanilla, black amber, coconut husk, gold
Eldritch - Pineward Perfume
“Lair of ancient eldritch abominations, a resinous and dark perfume for the bold and unafraid.”
leather, myrrh, patchouli, fir, oolong tea, opoponax, smoke, pine needles, oakmoss
Stel - Treading Water Perfume
motor oil, metal, desert air, frankincense, oud
Persian Tea Room - Alkemia
spiced black tea, dry desert sand, spices, musk, soft leather
Firebird - Fantôme
“This is a rich, golden scent that emulates the golden apples and warm flame of the Firebird.”
smoldering embers, burning cloves, orange, golden saffron, endless forest, soot on feathers, soft flame, apple
Dwarf - Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs
iron filings, chips of stone, hops, soot-covered leather
Tyrannosaurus Rex - Zoologist
“A sultry heat wafts across the land, lapped up greedily by the abundant flora that thrives in its midst… The Cretaceous period comes of age against a backdrop scorched by wildfire and lightning strikes.”
bergamot, black pepper, fir, laurel leaf, neroli, nutmeg, champaca, geranium, jasmine, osmanthus, rose, ylang ylang, resins, cade, cedar, civet, frankincense, leather, patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla
Water: Water ghouls tend to have smooth, cold scents. Some are sweet, some are sour, some are salty, but all of them reflect different bodies of water.
Notes: ozone, vanilla, water, citrus, seaweed, salt, sand, ice, tropical fruit
Triton - Fantôme
murky sea water, ambergris, ancient forest mosses, crushed ivy, frankincense, resins, ozone, a hint of citrus
Voice of the Sea - Alkemia
“An olfactory musing from the underside of a wooden dock.”
salty sea breezes, sun-bleached driftwood, crushed seashells, lemon peel, barnacles, sand, and sea-soaked timbers
Dragonfly - Zoologist
“Giant lotus pads part to make way for buds that pierce the surface of the jade green pond. They raise their faces to the sun, their delicate fragrance floating around them. In the shadow of the flowers, tiny dragonfly nymphs also emerge from the shallows. They spread their fragile wings and shyly take flight, ready to explore a world beyond the water.”
grapefruit, basil, angelica seed, ginger, rice, aquatic florals, geranium, jasmin sambac, mimosa, orris absolute, rose, violet leaves, rainwater, moss, patchouli, tonka, vetiver, benzoin, cashmeran
Acadia - Alkemia
“An olfactory portrait of coastal Maine.”
atlantic ocean fog, balsam fir pine needles, seaweed, bay leaves, saltwater, charred driftwood
Gelatto - Pineward Perfume
“Suntanned skin and sunny beaches.”
makrut lime, jasmine sambac, mandarin orange, gardenia, massoia bark, sandalwood, ambergris
Squid - Zoologist
“The vast ocean swells and contracts, caught in the relentless tug of the moon. Beneath the surface, a school of squid emerges. Strange, elastic forms propel from the deep in a frantic search for sustenance. They are not alone. Their predators lunge, only to be foiled by blinding jets of murky ink.”
pink pepper, solar salicylate, incense, black ink accord, salty accord, opoponax, ambergris, benzoin, musk
Seahorse - Zoologist
“Balmy sunlight trips across foamy turquoise waves, sending rippling haloes onto the coral below. On the lagoon floor, anemone and seaweed sway in unison, limbs pumping to the rhythm of the current. Hovering among the coral branches, a group of seahorses gazes shyly on.”
guatemala cardamom, fennel, ambrette absolute, clary sage, tuberose, neroli, algae absolute, vetiver, ambergris accord
Quintessence: Heavy, warm, creamy scents. Quintessence ghouls tend to smell comforting, and their scents reflect human creations much more often than other ghouls’.
Notes: amber, leather, chocolate, alcohol, linen, lavender, wood, milk, vanilla
Amber Witch - Alkemia
aged dark arabian amber, honey musk, creamy bourbon caramels, spiced rum
Moon Magic - Sorcellerie Apothecary
“Smells like your favorite cozy witch.”
lavender sugar, tonka bean, chai spices, vanilla steamed milk, cashmeran, ambroxan, crystals charged by moonlight
Sailing to Byzantium - Alkemia

Novella - Alkemia
“A cozy afternoon curled up in a favorite chair…”

cherry pipe tobacco, golden amber, aged leather, oakmoss, old cedar chests
Solovey - Fantôme
black amber, crushed violets, black currants, dark espresso, labdanum, black agarwood, tobacco
(one of my favorites of all time. it smells like nighttime but magical, somehow. the amber, violets, and espresso are most noticeable and it's so good. if dark purple was a scent it would be this imo)
Fleurs Historiques et Cacao - Alkemia
“A historical recipe from the 1700's court of Versailles created by a mistress to delight a king. A paradox of the decadent and the divine…”
dark cacao, french lavender, piquant black cardamom pods, tea with lemon peel, grapefruit blossom, vanilla musk

Attic Clean Out
I sold a couch last night! Need some cash to keep paying my medical bills til we open the Airbnb AND need to clean out the attic. So started posting on FB Marketplace with an antique medallion couch and sold it within a couple hours. Woot! Sure you gotta put up with Russian trolls messaging you with “I would like to purchase your item. Where are you located?” Ummm, look at the damn ad, you bot.
Next up, a small antique sideboard. Or a crib. Baby shit does go fast.
Now I gotta go oil the woodframe and vacuum it up for the lady. She’s so excited and I’m glad it’s going to a good home.
I also found my vintage Calvin Klein jeans and a box of small summer clothes. Ought to be interesting. All that stuffs from the 90s. I’ll be a walking talking time warp this summer.
Soooo many toys up there too. Little people sets, easy bake ovens, Barbie’s, dollhouses … hopefully all will be sold.
And my kids’ clothes? Why was I saving that? I understand saving the baby stuff (for if and when they have babies) but I literally have boxes of clothing in all sizes 2T to Tween sizes! I’ll probably donate that stuff. It doesn’t sell well unless it’s something special.
James thinks we should just try another yard sale when it warms up this Spring, but I need cash now!
(And no, I don’t have a structured settlement)

I'm smack dab in central Florida. Tampa is about an hour's drive south. I spent all day laying sandbags, and tomorrow will be the same.
I'm going to fill the rest of my sandbags with dirt from the yard, bc it's not worth wasting the gas to drive into town and maybe fight traffic and lines for sand (plus, the limit is 10 bags per person, which is barely enough to block one door. If your house is not near waterproof, blocking just the door is pointless. I have a woodframe house. The water comes in right under the siding.)

[Image Description: The first image is a nighttime photograph of a nativity scene where St. Joseph, baby Jesus, and Mary are in three separate wire-on-woodframe cages that are placed three to five feet apart. St. Joseph and Mary are standing and reaching toward baby Jesus, lying in the manger all by himself. Behind the cage holding baby Jesus is a pole on which is mounted the Christmas star.
The second image is of a sign presumably posted nearby. It reads:
In a time in our country when refugee families seek asylum at our borders and are unwillingly separated from one another, we consider the most well-known refugee family in the world, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the Holy Family.
Shortly after the birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary were forced to flee with their young son from Nazareth to Egypt to escape King Herod, a tyrant. They feared persecution and death.
What if this family sought refuge in our country today?
Imagine Joseph and Mary separated at the border and Jesus, no older than two, taken from his mother and placed behind the fences of a Border Patrol detention center as more than 5,500 children have been the past three years.
Jesus grew up to teach us kindness and mercy
and a radical welcome of all people.
He said: "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." - Mtthew 25:35
In the Claremont United Methodist Church nativity scene this Christmas, the Holy Family takes the place of thousands of nameless families separated at our borders.
Inside the church, you will see this same family reunited, the Holy Family together, in a nativity that joins the angels in singing
"Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and good will to all." - Luke 2:14
End I.D.]

Secure the Shadow by Claudia Emerson

Late April House Fire along Interstate 81
I had wondered for some time about its source, the smoke a fixed-roiling column visible
for miles, unchanged by the wind that had all day blown across the road
with pollen and bees a fine spring snow salting fields newly greening, the redbuds
livid beneath it. By the time I came upon it, fire was indivisible part of the two-story,
woodframe farm house—still itself, completely whole, composed: white clapboard, porch and roof,
front door, window frames—glass panes intact— the chimneys that would survive, calm inside
the flames' straight rush-contained, bright-rising enravishment. I knew this was nothing
like the worse resolve of another hour when the backward gravity of fire
would have relented to the old habit of collapse, the sift of slow ash down
on all that does not burn—hinges, latches, doorknobs, keys still sunk in the locks, the wind
passing through windowless air. But this was anguish not yet grief. And so I slowed
but did not stop to watch someone else's tragedy burn past this brief, nearly
beautiful suspension that changes nothing.
***
First Death
Now, the first of my father's maiden aunts was dying, the frail kindest of the three,
her bed set up downstairs in the formal parlor where the coffin soon would follow, the room
darkened, curtains drawn against the day for no good reason I could see, an afternoon's
wasting outside equally terrible, all inside now defined by the other
aunts' hushed fussing, the smell of her breathing, of cloves, pain, of something unidentifiable
just beneath her nightgown, the soft veneer of talcum's dissolve. My mother asked me
to crush ice, something useful, she said, but I saw in it a way out as I wrestled cubes
from aluminum trays, wrapped them in a dishcloth to crush on the concrete stoop out back.
Alone then with the fattening shadows of sheets on the line, the sickbed filled with wind, I fell
to my task, sudden unfamiliar delight in the heft of the hammer, in a sound
as of bones breaking, the sense perhaps of some part giving way, a finger, maybe, a tooth,
fragile hand, delicate foot. I opened the cloth to dainty slivers I swaddled again
for her forehead, saving some, as I had been instructed, in a china cup, for her to hold
in her mouth. My mother took it from me, and from the threshold, I could see
my great-aunt's face abstracted in half-light, her mouth a deeper shadow closing—
what she might have understood of my labor already vanished on her tongue.
***
The Porch
This is not illness, not yet dying, this stillness a changed way
of being here on the porch. Ninety-three, my father sits much as he always sat,
still recognizable as himself, baseball cap the same, rocking chair, the flyswatter,
old defense he holds but will not use, its mesh a small window screen
keeping nothing away from him. The wrens have chosen again the glazed-clay bird bottle
he hung close under the shadowy eaves and have more quickly accepted him, his presence
so little to grow accustomed to as they fly back and forth, above and around him in ordinary
industry; in their beaks pieces of straw, tufts of moss or spider's web, they pause
now and then to light on the clothesline, the downspout, the back of his rocker.
When one wren grips the bill of his cap the way it will in a few minutes land on a dogwood branch,
I understand that although I am as still as he is, and that such concentration
is its own disappearance, the birds must sense the difference, his being so fully formed
it has become unquestioned part of the small landscape of their survival.

His eye draws back. Stops. Holds while the comment registers - and then he sighs watching the tiefling curtly dip, a huffy exhale through the serpent's mouth as though he'd mastered the art of grousing with his breath alone. Incorrigible. His gaze lingers narrowdly a moment longer on his company while the rest of him turns to the door (biting his tongue lest he feed the devil further), grabbing two flasks of the vín from the counter-set crate in one hand as he does; disconcernedly uncertain whether it is irate or a fluster which rises to his chest and cheek as he pushes through the woodframe and steps outside (yet certain both of them could use the drink, either way--).
"You are last come tonight." Jormun speaks unto the brisk and open air as he sets his feet to stone, a cavernous flooring he had carved out himself to make it moderately more walkable - if no less hard and cold. The shulking giant doesn't look behind as he starts off, though his voice is nontheless directed towards Thorne in a general sense as he naturally presumes the other to follow, bid across the open spaced cavern towards the lodges, past the steaming springs and where they are gathered at the other end. He continues their headcount, as they go.
"The Frenchmen are preening. Sanji brought a case the size of his own, though gods know what he intends to do with it. The others are--" His brow creases lightly, casting about for any sight of the Scotsman's square frame amongst the waters. Or any of them, for that matter. "Somewhere. We will find them when we are ready."
"You want me to hold them open for you?" It was easy, too easy. At times he almost felt for the serpent, his timidness no match for the devil's vulgar swiftness. Thorne giggles at his own joke, clown and audience in one, and drifts from his spot to have a look around the storage they stand in, vaguely snooping said supplies. The mention of a cabin pleases him, though he forgoes extra warmth, burning hot enough on his own. "That's awfully kind of you." He comments with his hat held to his chest, a glimmer of mischief in the glowing orbs of his eyes.
"I would trouble you for a drink and directions to whatever bedroll you've assigned me; I'd appreciate a moment to recoup." Naturally, he envisions himself falling back on a quilted, squeaky-springed mattress and staying out like a light for the next hour or so, then rejoining the party. "Has anyone else arrived?"
