ghoul element perfume associations!

i've done a few scent association lists for individual ghouls, and i thought it would be fun to do one for elements instead! it's a little more general, which lets me include perfume that i really like but that don't fit any of the ghouls exactly. as always, i would love your feedback!!

Earth: Dense, earthy, bitter, green scents reminiscent of forests, gardens, and ruins halfway reclaimed by nature.

Attic Clean Out

I sold a couch last night! Need some cash to keep paying my medical bills til we open the Airbnb AND need to clean out the attic. So started posting on FB Marketplace with an antique medallion couch and sold it within a couple hours. Woot! Sure you gotta put up with Russian trolls messaging you with “I would like to purchase your item. Where are you located?” Ummm, look at the damn ad, you bot.

Next up, a small antique sideboard. Or a crib. Baby shit does go fast.

Now I gotta go oil the woodframe and vacuum it up for the lady. She’s so excited and I’m glad it’s going to a good home.

I also found my vintage Calvin Klein jeans and a box of small summer clothes. Ought to be interesting. All that stuffs from the 90s. I’ll be a walking talking time warp this summer.

Soooo many toys up there too. Little people sets, easy bake ovens, Barbie’s, dollhouses … hopefully all will be sold.

And my kids’ clothes? Why was I saving that? I understand saving the baby stuff (for if and when they have babies) but I literally have boxes of clothing in all sizes 2T to Tween sizes! I’ll probably donate that stuff. It doesn’t sell well unless it’s something special.

James thinks we should just try another yard sale when it warms up this Spring, but I need cash now!

Porsche 356 woodframe !

Porsche's first sports cars had aluminum body panels, but it was nature's own lightweight material that made their iconic shape possible.

The Porsche 356 had bodywork that where the panels were hammered and hand rolled into shape, and a wooden frame model was used to ensure everything lined up.

That frame still exists, and is in relatively good condition. It's at the Porsche Automuseum in Gmünd, Austria, where the first Porsche production cars were completed before manufacturing moved to Stuttgart, Germany.

The frame is sometimes called Holzklopfmodell, which is German for "hammered wooden frame," but the frame itself wasn't hammered. Rather, it served as a model the factory workers used for shaping and fitting of the aluminum body panels. It was a time-consuming process that sometimes required multiple attempts to get a door or fender to perfectly fit the frame, which was the exact shape of a 356 body. The process took at least 90 hours, according to Porsche.

Handmade bodywork was primarily a feature of the earliest Austrian-built Porsches. Starting in 1948, Porsche built 52 cars in Gmünd, including 44 coupes and eight convertibles, plus between eight and 10 super light (SL) bodies that were completed by Porsche's racing department in Stuttgart between 1951 and 1952.

When production shifted to Germany in 1949, Porsche switched to steel bodies and mechanized manufacturing processes, leaving hand-formed aluminum for specials like the 16 lightweight 356 America Roadsters. A new wooden frame eventually replaced the original.

Because steel is much harder than aluminum, Porsche started using presses to manufacture body panels, which also allowed it to produce cars at a faster rate. Today, the 356 wood frame remains as a reminder of the automaker's early days.

I'm smack dab in central Florida. Tampa is about an hour's drive south. I spent all day laying sandbags, and tomorrow will be the same.

I'm going to fill the rest of my sandbags with dirt from the yard, bc it's not worth wasting the gas to drive into town and maybe fight traffic and lines for sand (plus, the limit is 10 bags per person, which is barely enough to block one door. If your house is not near waterproof, blocking just the door is pointless. I have a woodframe house. The water comes in right under the siding.)

It’s a week before Christmas, and I’m scouting the interior of a small woodframe chapel.

It’s mostly empty. The pews were removed a while back when it was converted into a community meeting room. The heat isn’t on, and the room is as cold as the brisk winter day outside. A lone wreath hangs above the entrance.

“I don’t like this place much,” says my guide. “Never feels right in here. I’ll tell you why, if you’re interested.”

The church is located on a century-old hospital campus that once treated tuberculosis patients. Today, a handful of buildings are still in use as medical facilities. The rest are in a state of abandonment.

My guide is a custodian here, and has worked at the property for decades. I snap scout pictures as he talks.

“Sometime in the 1960s, someone hanged himself from the rafters over there.” He points at the beams over the entrance door, just above where the wreath is. “I believe he was the preacher. Ever since, there’s been talk among the staff that the church is haunted.

“I never put much stock in it,” he says. “Until one day, when I was put in charge of hiring some additional staff. There was this one woman I brought on. Perfectly nice, didn’t speak much English.

“It’s her first day, and I give her a rundown of her duties and a tour of the campus. We finish here, and I ask her to start by cleaning the church.

“Well, five minutes later, I’m outside and she comes running out screaming her head off. It takes me a minute to understand what she’s trying to say: that there’s a man hanging from the rafters.

“Well, we all run inside to check, and of course no one is there. But she wouldn’t go back in, and never came back after that day.

“Thing is, there’s no way she could have known about what happened. It was ancient history at that point. And none of the other staff had met her, so no one could have told her.”

He thinks back, lost in the memory for a moment. “But I’m positive she saw something that day,” he continues. “Don’t know what, but she saw something in those rafters.”

He glances at the small wreath. “Needless to say, it’s going to take a lot more than a wreath to make this place feel cheery for me.”
