Crashing For The Night
Whoop whoop first Spiderverse fic!! :D This is set in an alternate or future universe where all the spider people can freely jump dimensions to see people they know and everything is chill.
(The last spider-verse movie gave me the big sad and I'm hoping the third one gives us an ending where the spiders can see each other whenever they want)
ALL PLATONIC, PLEASE AND THANK YOU
Word Count: 2,225
Warnings: None
This is a SFW tickle fic, if you don’t like that then don’t read :)
“Oi bruv, tip for being quiet? Stop tramping around like a cobbler up there, you’re gonna put scuff marks on me ceiling.”
Hobie turned his head fractionally to side-eye the roof of his London apartment, and as he expected, a familiar black and red spider suit rippled into sight. A loud sigh was released from the intruder.
“Thought I was getting better at this,” Miles muttered bitterly.
“Gotta be slicker than that to catch me off guard, mate,” Hobie smirked and turned to lean against his desk, waving a hand to the boy. “Now get off the bloody roof, would ya?”
Miles sighed again and let his feet detach from the wooden planks, leaving a hand to suspend him over the floor before dropping lightly onto the thick carpet. “Um… sorry for sneaking in.”
“Aye, I’m not miffed about it, Gwendy’s done it enough for me to be used to spiders creeping in at random times.”
Hobie hefted himself off of the desk and approached the smaller teen, taking stock of his heavy undereye bags and wilted posture. With a long eye roll, he slung a gangly arm around Miles’s shoulders and pressed him against his side, feeling the boy melt against him and drop most of his weight against the taller Spiderman.
Hobie frowned deeper in concern. “You alright, mate?” He asked, his thick, British accent softened for the kid he was embracing gently. It felt like one squeeze too hard would shatter the poor spiderling.
The muted traffic honking outside Hobie’s window filled the quiet his query left behind - Miles oddly silent in Hobie’s one-armed hug and head heavy on the taller teen’s shoulder. Hobie let the lack of reply hang for a moment before gently tugging Miles over to the blanket-laden couch. He flopped down, dragging Miles onto the cushions with him, and propped his boot up onto the coffee table.
“C’mon mate, you look utterly zonked. What happened?”
Miles huffed softly, his lips twitching at Hobie’s odd slang. However, his brief glint of amusement died as quickly as it had arrived. He messed with his fingernails, trying to focus on something else besides the tight ball of anxiety that had been rolling in his gut for the better part of the last hour.
“Just…, my parents again.” His voice lacked its usual spark, something Hobie caught onto immediately and hummed.
“ ‘Nother spat, huh?”
Miles groaned and dragged his hands over his face, staring at the wood ceiling and noticing a slight scuff mark his Jordans undoubtedly made. He hoped Hobie didn’t see them too. “They’re being a bit too much lately- and I know they’re just looking out for me, I know that, but they’re always- they just- ughh.”
Miles pulled away from the taller boy to lean his elbows on his knees and bury his eyes into his palms, exhaling heavily. Hobie just rubbed his back and waited patiently. He’d been faced with this kind of behavior before - after all, you didn’t make friends with Gwen Stacey and not have a fair share of emotionally overwhelmed moments. A moment or two passed, and then Miles lifted his face from his hands to interlock his fingers in front of his chin, using his thumbs to balance his jaw.
“...They’re always trying to control my life in some way or another. I feel… I don’t know, suffocated? I- ugh, god, that sounds harsh- I’m happy they’re there, obviously. I just can’t handle it twenty-four-seven. You know?”
Hobie nodded at the end of Miles's speedy rambles, patting his back gently. "Hover parenting, huh? Sounds like a damn nightmare."
Miles grumbled and flopped back onto the couch, crossing his arms tightly. "Yeah… I’m just worried that if I tell them to back off they'll be offended and ground me."
"Just like the government," Hobie clicked his tongue, "always trying to make the people do what they want and punishing the lot of them when they rebel"
Miles huffed a small laugh and turned his head to look up at Hobie in fond amusement. "You're genuinely comparing my parents' helicopter parenting to government control?"
Hobie shrugged. "My brand, innit? I see an opportunity, I'll take it."
"Jeez man," Miles chuckled, pressing his fingers to the bridge of his nose and shaking his head.
"Oi, don't diss my mannerisms mate, besides, it made you laugh didn't it?"
Miles rolled his eyes and balanced his cheek on his fist, smirking up at the taller boy under a dry, half-lidded stare. "Sure."
The punk-coded Spiderman frowned, leaning forward into the younger boy's space. "You being sarcastic with me?"
"Wha- me? Me? No, I would never." Hobie was elated to see Miles grinning as he spoke, holding his hands up in surrender.
As Hobie glared playfully at him, he saw past Miles's undereye bags and exhausted frame - noticing the spark in his eyes was starting to return. Hmm, good. It was time to make it come back entirely. Hobie didn’t like seeing his little brother so low. ‘Annoying, yet well-meaning Big Brother’ was gonna have to come out and play now.
Never none to delay an opportunity to make Miles's mood improve, Hobie straightened his posture to prepare for his future scheme. “I don’t like liars, Morales,” he said, snatching the boy into his arms in a quick movement, one arm wrapped around Miles’ torso while the free hand scrubbed ruthlessly over his mop of thick curls. “And my spider senses tell me ya fibbin’.”
“Ack- Hobie!” Miles's choked outcry was quickly swallowed up by his peals of laughter, Hobie’s knuckles having jumped from his hair to dig into his ribcage. “Nohoho! Nohohot thahahat!”
The boy immediately tried to wrench himself away from the British Spiderman, his legs flying out and catching the coffee table, causing it to rattle loudly.
Hobie let out a bemused breath, flipping Miles onto his back and leering down at him with a playful glare. “Oh, so you first scuffed up my ceiling and now you’re damaging my furniture? That’s not on, little spiderling.”
Miles's shoulders bounced with his bright cackles, folding into himself as nimble fingers fluttered across his sides and abdomen quickly, light as air and shifting too fast for him to figure out a way to fight back.
Desperate to weasel himself out of the unexpected attack he gasped out, “I-ihihihi- I dihihidn’t schuhuhuff yohour ceilihihing!” It felt like a flimsy rebuttal even to him. Hobie clearly thought so too when he scoffed with an amused grin.
“I have eyes, you bellend, I can see the marks clear as day. And you know what you’ve just done? You lied again. Seriously, who taught you to be such a delinquent?”
Oh man, Miles was gonna regret answering that, but the opportunity was right there. Summoning the same courage he used when facing down Miguel, he shot back, “Yohou dihihid!”
Hobie paused in his mischievous actions, looking down at Miles who was doing his best to sink into the older boy’s legs and hopefully disappear from existence. He was watching closely as Hobie absorbed that answer, nervous giggles sputtering out of him the longer the silence dragged out - both from the anticipation and the aftermath of the sudden tickle attack. Then, finally, Hobie grinned, ominous yet proud at the same time.
“Damn right I did,” he said after a moment, then the other shoe dropped. “Now, I gotta show you what happens to delinquents who don’t know when to run when they’ve been given a chance to escape.”
The reply made Miles balk, a delayed folly of a getaway ruined when Hobie latched onto his upper rib cage and dug his thumbs into Miles’s armpits. The sound that was wrangled out of the boy was both comically loud and hilarious, a squeaky yelp chased by peals of wild laughter.
Miles curled into a ball, legs kicking out from where they were sprawled out across the couch cushions while his torso bent and squirmed from Hobie’s lap. His gasps of laughter were punctuated by voice cracks, the tail end of puberty still clinging to Miles though he tried to convince himself he’d finished with it.
Hobie’s sinister smirk melted into a warm grin, laughing a bit himself. “Are you trying to high beam your worst spot to the world with your suit, Miles? You’ve literally got red highlights as racing stripes under your armpits. You’re lucky a supervillain hasn’t caught onto the obvious clue yet, you’d be as good as done for.”
Miles grabbed at Hobie’s wrists, shaking his head from side to side to bear the rushing tingles twirling throughout his nervous system that made his spider-sense go skewed and essentially shut down - conflicted with the threat of a possible danger and Mile’s gleeful emotions from the light-hearted tousling.
“Ihihi alreheheady hahave a supervillahahain messing wihihiith me!”
“Yeah, and I’m the most merciful one you’ll ever get.”
Miles gave a particularly endearing squeal when Hobie’s fingers found that awful little spot just below his shoulder blades. “THIHIhihis ihihis mercehehehey?!” He gasped incredulously, wrenching away from Hobie on instinct and almost tumbling off the couch.
Hobie’s hands lunged out and scooped Miles back against his chest, releasing a quick, relieved breath for his spider sense. “Yeah,” Hobie snickered, “a real supervillain would’ve let you fall.”
Grateful for the break, Miles breathed in deeply, releasing it in a fast exhale as he leaned back heavily against Hobie. “Good,” he answered after a moment, “it would’ve got me an escape route so I could get you back.”
Hobie snickered, tipping his head to the side to catch Miles’s tired, half-lidded stare - noting the spark and warmth was back in those caramel brown eyes. “I don’t think you’re up for any revenge tonight, big man,” he grinned.
Miles would’ve flipped Hobie off, but damnit he was tired and he didn’t want to provoke another round of tickling. Hobie seemed to have caught on that Miles was fading a bit, and gently shifted the boy off his lap so he could lie down on the couch fully. Hobie dragged one of the many quilted blankets off of the couch and draped it over Miles, smirking when the younger Spiderman fisted the blanket and tugged it up to his chin.
“So, feeling better then?” Hobie asked, sitting on the coffee table as Miles got comfortable.
Miles paused in his movements to glare at him flatly. “After you bullied and tortured me for fifteen minutes?”
Hobie snickered. “It was barely ten, you diva,” he argued lightly.
Miles pouted slightly but nodded. “Yeah… yeah, I feel better. I know my parents are just looking out for me, I think I just need to ask them to be a little less.. Well..”
“Helicopter-ory about it?”
“That doesn’t sound like a word.”
“Okay, and what are you? The word police?”
Miles grinned into the quilt, amused to no end by how Hobie always seemed ready to jump on anything that sounded close to something he’d support or attack in the name of his brand. “If there was a word police, you would’ve broken it down by now.”
“Damn right, I would’ve.”
A hand planted itself in Miles’s hair, gently messing with the bouncy curls. “And hey, if that conversation doesn’t go over well, this dimension is always welcome to you. You’ve got the watch, pop in whenever you need an escape or just wanna see me.”
Miles covered his softened heart with a flat look. “So you can tickle me to oblivion again?”
“Only if you deserve it,” Hobie gave a wink and took his hand from Miles’s curls. “Besides, you seemed like you needed that laugh too.”
Miles’s mouth disappeared under the blanket as he grumbled to himself, muffling the denial undoubtedly rambling out. That was okay, Hobie knew he was right. He stood from the couch, stretching his arms high above his head to get the crick out of his back.
“Also, you can crash here for the night mate, you’re half asleep already.”
“No, ‘m not.”
“Sure, spiderling,” Hobie tweaked Miles’s toes in passing the couch, relishing in the high-pitched squeak and flinch he got. “I’m not gonna make you go home when you’re wiped out like this, Gwen has slept on that exact couch and said it’s comfy. Telling ya that cause you ain’t stealing my bed.”
He heard Miles hum drowsily as he turned off the mismatched lamps in his living room, bathing the space in a gentle glow of the city lights outside - cosy and unobtrusive. “I don’t think I could move if I want’d to.”
“Good, stay there and knock out.”
The soft chuckle he got made him smile. Hobie carefully stepped over the AMP cords strewn about the living space and headed for the closest door. “Goodnight, Miles,” he called softly.
“Mnrgh, g’night…”
Hobie went to leave and then paused. With a grin, he turned his head to say, “You’re helping me cook breakfast tomorrow by the way.”
Miles laughed again, sleepy and warm. “I know how to burn water and explode eggs.”
“Excellent, be unique, and destroy social constructs. Who says you gotta be normal when cooking eggs?”
Miles snorted. “Go to bed, Hobie.”
Hobie smiled and knocked twice on the doorframe. “Night little spiderling.” He said, stepping through to his room, leaving a content and peaceful Miles Morales to snooze on his couch.

Story time and art today! Haven’t written much in several years, but pretty proud of this.
Context: Mcd season 3, Liochant is 19 and a guard in training. Garroth and Aphra have become distant after Laurance leaving, and Garroth still struggles with injuries sustained in Irene’s dimension
4k words
“You’re hiding behind that shield.” Garroth stated bluntly as he struck at Liochant again. They had been at it for almost an hour, but he seemed barely out of breath.
Liochant reeled back, an incomplete block causing Garroth’s strike to jostle his shield roughly and send a painful shock up his arm. Liochant looked down at the training shield, a simple plank of wood with some faded yet sturdy leather loops keeping it on his arm.
“Isn’t that the point?” He asked between panting breaths, his face beaded with sweat. “Of a shield?”
Garroth rolled his eyes. “A shield gives you more defense, but you’re limiting your options and slowing yourself down by staying tucked behind it constantly. It’s a weapon, not a crutch. For example-”
Garroth rushed forward suddenly, bracing against his own shield as he shoved into Liochant. Lio’s own shield clanged hard against his chest as he fell backwards, knocking the wind out of him and sending him sprawling out onto the dusty floor of the training arena. Garroth stood above him, readjusting his cape, the evening sun casting his long shadow across Liochant’s face.
“-A shield bash.” Garroth finished. “Simple, but good for getting more space, especially if you have a longer weapon.” He held up his weapon as an example, a long wooden quarterstaff with blunt metal tips. It was his go-to choice for training the new guards. The lack of sharp edges reduced the risk of any severe accidents, and the metal tips weighted it in a way that we could use it similarly to his glaive.
Garroth’s words were tinny and distant. Liochant was on the ground, gasping for air as he tried to right his breathing. The kicked up dust stung his eyes, making them water, and he had fallen onto his sword arm, so now both arms were aching.
“A real opponent won’t wait for you to get up.” Garroth scolded, his words coming in clearer. “Unless you’re yielding, I’d suggest you stand.”
Liochant grit his teeth. His armor now felt heavy and cumbersome as he tried to get up. His arms and legs felt weak and wobbly. He managed to get to his knees, then used his training sword to push himself to his feet, steadying himself slightly.
He was determined not to lose this opportunity. He had fought for weeks to get this one-on-one training session with Garroth. Every time he had asked, Garroth had made some excuse about patrol schedules or prior engagements. The only reason they were here now was because Lord Aphra had overheard Lio’s latest attempt and supported the idea, so Garroth had reluctantly agreed.
Garroth always acted strange around Liochant, seeming to want to avoid being alone with him as much as possible. He was also tougher on Lio than he was with the other trainees, using him to demonstrate certain advanced attacks or pitting him against two or three of the other students simultaneously. Last week Garroth had even made him spar with Lucinda’s apprentice, throwing him into a magic duel that he was completely unprepared for, which had left him with some nasty burns. There were some times when Liochant thought Garroth might just be trying to get rid of him.
But no, Garroth was just being tough, he was sure of it. I mean, this was Garroth Ro’Meave, runaway prince, champion of Phoenix Drop, who had stood up to and forced back an entire division of O’Khasis soldiers. Garroth’s story and the stories of his friends had become legend on the streets of O’Khasis. Liochant had been raised on those stories, he had left home for Phoenix Drop based on those stories. And sure, actually meeting them hadn’t been entirely accurate to the tales. Garroth and Aphra were more reserved than how he thought they'd be, he swore he could sense some form of tension between them, a tension that hadn’t receded in the month he had been there. Lady Katelyn wasn’t around much, she seemed to prefer to stay in Brightport, and even when she visited she mainly trained the children, leaving little opportunity for Lio to speak with her. And he had yet to see Zane or Laurance, and the first time he had asked about them it was made clear to him that they were a forbidden topic throughout the village.
But then again, those stories were told to him when he was a child, by friends barely older than he was, it was to be expected that they weren’t entirely true. Even if something had happened here, and he was sure something had, it couldn’t have changed Garroth that much. Garroth was a hero. If he was pushing Liochant this hard… it must be because Garroth saw something in him. And he was determined not to let his hero down.
Liochant blew a stray curl out of his face, brandishing his sword and shield, a renewed confidence on his face and in his stance.
“No sir, I’m ready to continue.” He replied, shifting back into the battle form Garroth had shown him.
“Drop the shield.” Garroth ordered. “We’ll be doing a proper spar now, and you’ll need a lot more work before you can use it for real. You can dual-wield, or go get a two-handed weapon.”
Lio’s confidence faltered slightly. The last hour wasn’t proper sparring? He was already bruised and aching, and that was apparently Garroth going easy on him. He thought Garroth would be impressed with, or at the very least respect, his resilience, but if anything Garroth seemed annoyed that he had chosen to continue.
Still, Liochant did as he was told, placing his shield back on the weapons rack. He eyed the array of wooden weapons he had available to him. Daggers, staffs, spears, and swords of varying lengths and styles, all simple but well-maintained. He looked over them carefully, wanting to make the best choice.
He could never beat Garroth in range; he wasn’t strong enough yet to effectively control the longer weapons. And with his large shield, Lio doubted he’d be able to force through Garroth’s defense, even if he picked something heavy. And he had already proven to be terrible with daggers. But maybe, if he could get in close, keep himself light and quick, he could have a chance.
He grabbed two wooden short swords, testing their weight in his hands before settling on them and walking back to Garroth, who was readjusting the grip on his shield and staff. His expression was stony, unreadable. The white scar across the bridge of his nose was stark against his skin. Lio had always wondered what caused it, but he had learned quickly that there were a lot of off-limit topics in Phoenix Drop. He wasn’t eager to risk that scar being one of them.
“Standard rules.” Garroth stated, doubling checking his weapons as Liochant got into position in front of him. “A lethal strike or incapacitation counts as a point. Best out of three. Weapon up.” He ordered, raising his quarterstaff in his right hand out to Lio. Liochant did the same with his left sword. The weapons made a soft clacking sound as they crossed. Garroth’s eyes finally met Lio’s, teal eyes under a slightly furrowed brow.
“Begin.”
Garroth took two quick steps back, shifting the angle of his staff as he did so that it was resting on top of Lio’s sword. Before Lio could react, he wrenched his staff down, pulling Lio’s weapon with it. If Garroth had been using his glaive, he probably would’ve been able to apply enough force to disarm him. As it was, Lio was pulled off balance, knuckles white as he tried to keep hold of his sword as it was forced outwards and into the dirt. Garroth turned, his body now sideways to Lio. He swung his staff back, the opposite end now facing Lio as he brought the staff above his shoulder and drove the reverse strike right at Lio’s chest. Panicked, Lio swung his other sword across his body, just barely deflecting the strike upwards, flinching as the staff tip shot over his right shoulder, inches from his face. He made a jab at Garroth with his first sword, but Garroth had shifted sideways with his stroke, almost entirely covered by his shield. Lio’s blade bounced harmlessly off.
Garroth suddenly forced his arms down, bringing his staff down and inwards, the weapon catching the crook of Lio’s neck with shocking force. His left leg buckled and he fell to his knee, feeling the staff slide off his shoulder as Garroth shifted the weapon back into a more natural grip and thrust it at Lio’s neck. Lio crossed his swords in front of him in an attempt to block, but the staff tip sailed above the crossed blades. He turned his head and braced for the blow, but after a moment opened his eyes to see the staff tip inches from his throat. Garroth stared down at him, his expression unchanging.
“Incapacitation.” He declared. “First point goes to me.”
Lio rubbed at his neck, feeling a small knot where Garroth’s staff had struck. He waited, expecting some form of critique or praise for his performance, but all he got was an order to stand up and return to his base position. He felt a slight twinge of annoyance at this. How was he supposed to improve for the next round if he wasn’t told what he did right or wrong?
“Sir?” He asked tentatively as their weapons crossed again. “Is there anything I should change for this round?”
“Yes,” Garroth responded. “you shouldn’t let me get the point this time. Begin”
Lio quickly pulled his swords back, determined to not let Garroth control this round. He shuffled backwards, skirting around the range of Garroth’s staff, assessing his form. Garroth took a couple test jabs with the staff, but Lio skipped out of the way. They circled each other, both waiting for an opening, Garroth keeping his shield between him and Liochant. Lio knew he’d have to be smart to break Garroth’s defense.
Garroth had liked using him as the example for the other trainees, so Lio had gotten some up-close experience with how Garroth preferred to maneuver. He thought back to previous training sessions, and remembered how Garroth had appeared to move worse to his left. Not by much, but there was a small hesitation. And he’d sometimes see Garroth rubbing his left knee after training. A past injury? He wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter. It might just give him an edge.
Lio took a breath. His plan was risky, essentially riding on Garroth having a bad day, but it was all he had to go on.
He rushed in, dropping to his knee as he got close, skidding in the dust as he slashed at Garroth’s right side with his right blade. Garroth shifted his right foot quickly, turning sideways and putting enough distance between them that Lio’s blade came up short. Garroth swung his shield across his body, the edge slamming into the base of Lio’s sword, sending it clattering out of his hand and onto the ground. Lio looked up, seeing Garroth’s staff coming down, directly at his face. He rolled right, coming up on Garroth’s left side. He brought the hilt of his remaining blade to his cheek, driving a reverse strike at the armhole of Garroth’s chestplate. He expected Garroth to block it, but to his surprise, his plan paid off. Garroth hadn't been able to shift left as quickly, and his blade hit the thin chainmail under Garroth’s plate, eliciting a small wince of pain. Lio smiled.
“Lethal strike,” He said breathily. “Point for me!”
Garroth examined his side, seemingly taken aback. He looked over at Liochant, his expression calculating. Lio saw him glance down at his left leg, then back over to him. Garroth’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. Liochant thought he was being subtle, not immediately going for his left side, but it seemed Garroth knew that he knew.
“1-1.” Garroth said. “Next point wins. Retrieve your weapon.”
Lio fetched his lost sword, taking his time as he tried to strategize for the final round. No way was Garroth going to leave his left side open again. And even if he overcompensated with his shield on that side Lio doubted he’d be able to get a hit on Garroth’s right, he had barely dodged his staff last time. It seemed his best chance was just to remember his training and hope for an opening.
“Cross.” Garroth ordered.
Their weapons met.
“Begin.”
Apparently eager to avoid the slow start of the previous round, Garroth immediately drew his staff back and thrust it at Lio’s midriff. Liochant jumped back, the weapon coming up short by a few inches. Before Lio had any chance to counter Garroth advanced and jabbed at him again. Lio dodged, shifting sideways. He swung his swords down, deflecting the staff to his side. Garroth staggered slightly from the force applied. Seeing the break in Garroth’s defense, Lio moved in, swinging both swords down at Garroth’s right arm, hoping to disarm him. Garroth brought his shield over, deflecting Lio’s strike, though Lio noticed he was quick to bring it back to its original position. Garroth's demeanor was slightly different this time, he was moving more urgently, keeping his defense tighter, breathing with more effort. Lio felt a bit of excitement at this. He must have made Garroth a least a bit worried if he was trying harder.
Garroth brought his staff back up. Rather than another jab, he brought it out wide, swinging it down towards Lio’s left arm. Lio tried to bring his swords over to block, but Garroth’s staff struck his upper arm with an audible whack. Lio cried out, feeling a painful tingling radiate through his arm nerves and down into his fingers. The force was enough to bowl him over, though he was able to roll with the momentum and come up on his knee. Garroth attacked again, and although Lio was able to deflect it, his left arm ached in protest at the sudden movement. He rose to his feet, backing out of range, dodging yet another jab in the process.
The two circled each other, Lio’s mind racing as he tried to reassess the situation. With his dominant arm injured, his chances had just gone way down. But even if he wasn’t hopeful about winning, Liochant was determined to still put up a good fight in whatever way he could.
Garroth was keeping his defense tight, seemingly content with slowly wearing down Lio with smaller attacks. He kept his staff outwards, jabbing at Lio any time he tried to advance, forcing him to step back. Lio could feel the pain in his left arm growing, his grip on his sword becoming less reliable as his arm grew dull and heavy. He doubted he’d even be able to even make an attack with it, much less a successful one. It went against all his training, but he did the only thing he could think of. He threw the sword.
His sword wasn’t at all designed to be thrown. It careened awkwardly as it flew and Garroth smacked it out of the air with his staff easily, sending it skidding off through the dirt. But it had drawn Garroth’s attention, and Liochant used the brief distraction to charge.
He brought his sword high, gripping it with both hands as he swung it down at Garroth’s shoulder, aiming for the chink between his pauldron and chestplate. Garroth dropped to his knee as he blocked with his staff, their weapons meeting with a loud crack. It was a quick move, almost impossible considering he had just deflected Lio’s thrown sword. Unless, Garroth had already predicted where he would attack. Lio feared that he had just fallen for bait.
Lio bared down on Garroth’s staff, but even using just one arm Garroth was able to keep his staff in its blocking position, his arm trembling slightly. Liochant searched for an opening, but wasn’t eager to let up his pin on Garroth’s staff, even as the pain in his arm grew with the continued effort. They were locked in a standstill, Lio’s mind racing as he tried to think of the next thing to do.
His main focus was on Garroth’s staff, but Liochant suddenly caught movement in his peripheral vision. He saw Garroth’s back leg shift, and saw him tuck his left shoulder into his shield.
“Good for getting more space.”
Lios reflexes kicked in before he even finished processing the thought, jumping back and moving his sword to block as Garroth shot to his feet and slammed his shield into Liochant. Even being more prepared for it this time, the force was still shocking. Lio moving with the shield took away some of its power, but that didn’t stop him from being flung backwards. He hit the dirt floor with a rough thud, but managed to roll with his momentum, ending up on his back. Garroth was several paces away, but was rapidly closing the gap as he charged at Lio, his staff held high above his shoulder. Liochant’s left arm throbbed, the pain making his vision spotty, and he realized with a cold dread that he had lost his remaining sword, seeing it resting in the dirt a few feet away. Close, but just out of reach. He was defenseless.
Garroth was practically on top of him now, and from the look in his eyes Liochant feared he wouldn’t hold back his attack this time. He looked like he wanted to hurt him. Lio’s heart pounded, the pain and the fear making what was supposed to be a friendly sparring match suddenly feel all too real. He saw the evening sun glinting off the metal tip of Garroth’s staff as he drove it down, the weapon moments from slamming down on him and sending him straight to emergency treatment.
Fueled by panic and adrenaline, Liochant rolled swiftly to the side, kicking at Garroth’s legs as hard as he possibly could.
He hadn’t planned on doing it; it was a survival reflex more than any legitimate strategy. The fact that this was a simple competition had been obscured by his panic and frenzy. All he was worried about was getting out of danger. He certainly hadn’t planned on it actually working.
He felt Garroth’s foot catch on his ankle. The impact clanged painfully, eliciting a gasp of pain from him and a grunt in surprise from Garroth. At the same moment Garroth’s finishing attack was driven into the dirt where Lio had just been, sending a shockwave up Garroth’s arm. Either the trip or the misstrike probably wouldn’t have been enough to bring him down on their own. But together…
Garroth’s expression shifted from cold concentration to shock as he fell, his staff being wrenched out of his hand by the sudden shift in forces. He hit the ground hard, rolling several paces before coming to a stop.
The pain from his ankle was enough to bring Lio back into focus. He scrambled for his weapon, snatching it out of the dirt and sprinting at Garroth. Surprisingly, despite the painful fall, Garroth had already managed to rise to a kneeling position, holding his shield up, though he was obviously unsteady. Lio swiped at the shield as hard as he could, managing to knock it aside. He brought the blade of his sword to Garroth’s face, the tip hovering inches from his nose.
They paused there for a moment, both breathing heavily. Garroth stared at the blade in front of him, his face seemingly frozen in shock. Lio panted as he tried to steady his breathing, feeling his fear turn to excitement.
He had just beaten Garroth Ro'meave.
“Incapacitation!” Lio cheered. “That’s-”

“-two for me.” Laurance declared, taking his sword tip off of Garroth’s back, who was sprawled in the dirt. Laurance walked around and crouched down in front of his face. “Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but does that mean I just defeated Phoenix Drop’s Champion?”
Garroth spit out a mouthful of dust, grumbling as he propped himself up. Laurance gave him a smug smirk.
“Since when has tripping ever been allowed?” Garroth accused, rising to a seated position and trying in vain to wipe the grit from his face.
“Since I decided to make sparring actually interesting.” Laurance replied, twirling one of Garroth’s curls around his finger and letting it bounce back, sending more dust sprinkling down onto Garroth’s face.
“Not exactly honorable.” Garroth retorted, pushing his hand away playfully. “Is that how they train guards in Meteli?”
“Nope, that was a patented Laurance original.” He bragged.
“Ah yes, tripping, so original.” Garroth responded sarcastically.
Laurance shrugged. “Hey, you fight to win, I thought that was obvious. What, did they not teach you that in your fancy academy?.”
Garroth rolled his eyes, then sighed. “Putting aside your clear disregard for the rules…I guess you have a point there. Fine, you win, enjoy rubbing it in my face.”
“I will, very much so.”
“Great. Now are you going to help me up or not?”
-------
“That was an illegal move!” Garroth snapped, his face going red as he roughly shoved Lio’s sword to the side and out of his face. He rose to his feet, looking down at Lio with a scowl of disdain. “Go put your weapons back, this session is over.” He ordered harshly.
“What?!” Liochant shouted incredulously, finally losing his temper. “That’s not fair! You never said that wasn't allowed! Besides, I got an incapacitation, why does it matter how?”
“Real warriors don’t need to fight dirty to win.” Garroth said with contempt, turning away from Lio as he retrieved his staff and brushed the dust off his cape. “I gave you the benefit of the doubt with my leg in round two, but you clearly don’t value fighting honorably.”
Lio clenched his fists, his knuckles going pale as heat rushed into his face.
“Or maybe you just can’t handle losing.”
He had said that louder than intended.
Garroth didn’t turn around, but Lio saw his posture shift. Liochant’s anger quickly faded, replaced by fear as Garroth dropped his staff and shield into the dust at his sides.
“I-I’m sorry Garroth.” He said, looking down at his shoes, trying to make himself as small as possible. “I spoke out of turn. It won’t happen again-”
Garroth whipped around, storming towards him. Lio squeezed his eyes shut, readying for Garroth to strike him, but no hit came.
“Look at me.” Garroth ordered, his voice icy.
A cold sensation washed over Liochant. He took a shaky breath, willing himself not to cry as he raised his head and opened his eyes. Garroth glared down at him.
“You can drop the whole ‘plucky kid trying to make his mark’ act. It won’t work on me.”
“...What?” Lio’s voice was small, confused. He had barely processed what Garroth had just said.
Garroth stepped closer, eying Liochant with accusatory suspicion “You think you’re so clever just because Lord Aphra bought your sob story. Well I don’t believe it for a second. Why are you really here? To spy?”
“No.”
“Find our weaknesses?”
“No, of course not!”
“How much did my father pay you?”
“Nothing! I’m not a spy!” Liochant felt his voice breaking. “ I…I just wanted to help. Like you did…when you came here.”
Garroth’s expression softened for a moment, almost a look of pity.
“…Look,” He started. “you don’t want to be like-”
He cut himself off, turning his face from Lio’s for a brief moment. Lio heard him sigh, then let out a faint chuckle. Somehow, that was even worse than him yelling. When he turned back, he was smiling, but his eyes were full of contempt.
“Nice try kid.” He said sarcastically. “You know, it doesn’t even really matter why you’re here. As if I would ever trust someone like you.” The final words were dripping with venom, his false smile dropping. He stepped even closer. Lio forced himself to stand straight, willing himself to not fall apart.
“Listen close, I’m only going to say this once.” He jabbed his finger at Lio’s chest with each sentence.
“This is not your home.”
“These are not your people.”
“And I am not your friend.”
Liochant wanted to say something, anything, but he couldn’t. He didn’t even have the willpower to look away.
Garroth paused for a moment, breathing hard. Lio thought he saw the slightest shift in Garroth’s expression, but then Garroth turned away, picking his weapons up off the floor. As he stood up, he said one last thing, not even turning to face Liochant.
“You don't belong here kid. If you had any respect for this town, for those stories you like to tell, then you’d leave.” He placed his weapons back on the rack, and just like that he was gone.
Liochant was alone.

DIY Modern Wooden Christmas Tree: Step-by-Step Guide to Holiday Crafting
The holiday season is the perfect time to let your creativity shine! This year, why not add a touch of modern elegance to your Christmas decor with a DIY wooden Christmas tree? These minimalist, eco-friendly trees are easy to craft and bring a warm, rustic charm to your space. Whether you're looking for an alternative to traditional trees or just want to add a unique piece to your home, this step-by-step guide will help you create a stunning wooden Christmas tree.
🔴 Why Choose a Wooden Christmas Tree? Wooden Christmas trees are growing in popularity for several reasons
🌿 Eco-Friendly - They’re reusable and reduce the need for cutting down real trees.
🌿 Durable - Unlike real trees, wooden trees last for years.
🌿 Customizable - You can design them to suit your style and space.
🌿 Space-Saving - Ideal for small homes or apartments.
🌿 Budget-Friendly - With basic tools and materials, you can create a tree for a fraction of the cost of a store-bought one.
🔴 Tools and Materials Before diving into the project, gather these materials and tools:
🌿Wooden dowels, planks, or recycled pallet wood 🌿 Saw (hand saw, jigsaw, or circular saw) 🌿 Sandpaper (medium and fine grit) 🌿 Wood screws or nails 🌿 Drill 🌿 Measuring tape 🌿 Wood glue (optional) 🌿 Paint, stain, or varnish (optional) 🌿 Decorations: string lights, ornaments, or garlands
.........Visit ur a shop for recommend tools.......
🔴 Choose Your Tree Design
There are many ways to design a wooden Christmas tree. Here are a few popular options:
1. Flat Wall-Mounted Tree A minimalist design mounted directly on the wall, perfect for tight spaces.
2. Freestanding Ladder Tree - Resembling a ladder, this design allows you to hang ornaments on each "rung."
3. Tiered Tree - Made of horizontal wooden planks arranged in a tree shape.
4. Branch Tree - Assembled with real branches or dowels to mimic a tree's natural look.
( Decide on the style that best suits your space and decor )
🔴 Measure and Cut the Wood
🌲 Use a measuring tape to determine the dimensions of your tree. A good starting point is a height of 4–6 feet for a freestanding tree.
🌲 Mark the wood using a pencil and ruler to ensure precise cuts. 🌲 Cut the wood into desired lengths. For a tiered tree, cut planks into progressively shorter pieces to form a triangular shape. 🌲 Sand all edges to smooth any rough surfaces.
🔴 Assemble the Tree
Depending on your chosen design, follow these assembly instructions:
🌲 Flat Wall-Mounted Tree: Lay the planks in a triangular tree shape on the floor. Secure them with screws or nails, ensuring even spacing. Attach the tree to the wall using hooks or strong adhesive strips.
🌲 Freestanding Ladder Tree: Create two vertical supports from longer planks. Nail or screw shorter planks horizontally between the supports. (Ensure stability by checking that the structure doesn’t wobble )
🌲 Tiered Tree: Drill a hole through the center of each plank. Stack the planks on a central dowel or pole, starting with the largest at the bottom. Use spacers or small blocks between planks for even spacing.
🌲 Branch Tree: Arrange branches or dowels in a tree shape, securing them with screws or glue. (Attach a sturdy base to hold the tree upright)
🔴 Sand and Finish
Once assembled, sand the entire tree again to smooth rough spots.
🌵Apply a wood stain or paint for a polished look. Neutral tones like white, gray, or natural wood are popular for modern aesthetics. (Let the finish dry completely before decorating)
🔴 Decorate Your Tree
Now for the fun part , decorating!
🌲Lights - Wrap string lights around the tree for a warm glow. Battery-powered options work well for freestanding designs. 🌲Ornaments - Hang lightweight ornaments, keeping the design minimalist and balanced. 🌲Garlands - Use simple garlands made of beads, fabric, or paper for a stylish touch. 🌲Star or Topper - Add a sleek star or another modern topper to complete the look.
🔴 Additional Tips for Success 🔴
🌼 Safety First Always wear protective gear like gloves and goggles when using power tools.
🌼Recycle Materials Use leftover wood or repurpose old furniture for an eco-friendly project.
🌼Experiment Don’t be afraid to add personal touches like unique paint patterns, etching, or custom decorations.

DIY Guide to Making Acoustic Panels for Professional Sound Treatment in Your Home Studio
Creating a professional-sounding environment in your home studio is essential for producing high-quality recordings and mixes. One of the most effective ways to control sound reflections and reduce unwanted noise is by installing acoustic panels. While commercial panels can be expensive, making your own DIY acoustic panels is both cost-effective and relatively simple. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to craft your own acoustic panels for superior sound treatment in your home studio.
Why Use Acoustic Panels?
Before diving into the DIY process, it's important to understand why acoustic panels are essential. In untreated rooms, sound waves bounce off walls, ceilings, and floors, causing unwanted reflections, echoes, and reverb. Acoustic panels absorb these reflections, allowing you to hear a more accurate representation of your recordings and mixes.
Materials You'll Need:
1. **Wood for the Frame** (usually pine or another softwood)
- 1” x 4” planks (for a 2x4 foot panel)
2. **Absorption Material**
- Owens Corning 703 or Rockwool (mineral wool) insulation is the most effective material for sound absorption. You'll need enough for the size of your panels.
3. **Fabric**
- Use breathable fabric (like burlap or cotton) to cover your panels. Avoid fabric that’s too thick or non-breathable, as it will reflect sound rather than allow it to pass through to the absorption material.
4. **Staple Gun and Staples**
- To secure the fabric to the wood frame.
5. **Wood Screws**
- To hold the frame together.
6. **Mounting Hardware**
- Picture-hanging brackets or French cleats to mount the panels on the wall.
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood for the Frame
The standard size for acoustic panels is 2x4 feet, but you can adjust based on the needs of your space. Measure and cut the wood planks into the following dimensions:
- Two pieces of 4 feet for the long sides.
- Two pieces of 2 feet for the short sides.
These pieces will form the rectangular frame for your panel.
Step 2: Build the Frame
Using wood screws, connect the planks to form a sturdy rectangular frame. Ensure that the joints are tight and square. You can reinforce the frame with corner brackets if needed, but it’s not always necessary for light-duty use.
Step 3: Insert the Absorption Material
Once your frame is built, place the mineral wool or fiberglass insulation inside the frame. It should fit snugly without gaps. These materials are highly effective at absorbing sound, especially in the mid-to-high frequency range, which makes them ideal for acoustic treatment.
Step 4: Cut and Attach the Fabric
Next, cut your breathable fabric to size. Make sure the fabric is large enough to wrap around the entire panel, covering the front and wrapping around the sides and back of the frame.
Lay the fabric flat on the ground, place the frame with the absorption material face down on the fabric, and begin pulling the fabric tightly around the edges. Using a staple gun, staple the fabric to the back of the wooden frame. Make sure the fabric is smooth and taut to avoid wrinkles, as this will improve the appearance and performance of the panel.
Step 5: Seal the Back
For added durability and aesthetics, you can cover the back of the panel with an additional piece of fabric or a thin plywood board. While not necessary for acoustic performance, this step can make your panels more polished and long-lasting.
Step 6: Mount the Panels
Once the panels are finished, you’ll need to mount them on your walls. French cleats or picture-hanging brackets are effective methods for securing the panels to your walls. The positioning of your panels is crucial for optimal sound treatment.
- **First reflection points**: Place panels at the points on the walls where sound from your speakers first hits, usually at ear level.
- **Ceiling**: Hanging panels from the ceiling (also known as “clouds”) can control vertical reflections.
- **Corners**: If you have leftover materials, create bass traps by mounting panels in the corners where low-frequency buildup often occurs.
Step 7: Test Your Room
After installing your DIY acoustic panels, test the acoustics of your room. Play back some reference tracks and listen for improvements in clarity, especially in the high and mid frequencies. You should notice fewer echoes, reflections, and a more balanced sound overall.
Bonus Tips for Optimal Results:
- **Use More Panels for Larger Rooms**: If your space is large or highly reflective (i.e., with hardwood floors or large windows), you may need more panels to control sound adequately.
- **Add Bass Traps**: If you notice that your room still has excessive low-end resonance, consider adding bass traps made from the same materials but placed in the room’s corners.
- **Leave a Gap Between Panels and the Wall**: For better absorption of lower frequencies, leave a small gap between the panel and the wall. This allows sound waves to pass through the panel more effectively.
Conclusion
Making your own DIY acoustic panels is a simple and affordable way to improve the sound quality in your home studio. With a few materials and some basic tools, you can create professional-grade acoustic treatment that will help you achieve more accurate recordings and mixes. Start building your panels today and experience the difference they make in your sound!

How To Building Bamboo Pigeon Coop With A Unique Style| Farm Life
Introduction Building a pigeon coop is a rewarding DIY project, especially when using natural materials like bamboo. Bamboo is durable, eco-friendly, and gives a rustic yet elegant touch to your farm. This guide will take you through the steps to build a bamboo pigeon coop with a unique design that stands out.
Materials Needed:
Bamboo poles: Sturdy, straight bamboo poles of various lengths.
Wooden planks: For the base and framework.
Nails and screws: To secure the structure.
Chicken wire: For the walls to keep pigeons in and predators out.
Hinges and latch: For the door.
Rope or twine: To bind bamboo joints.
Saw: For cutting bamboo and wood.
Drill: For making holes in bamboo and wood.
**My
Hammer: For driving in nails.
Step-by-Step Guide:1. Planning and Design
**Place
Design: Sketch a design for your coop. A typical bamboo pigeon coop might have a rectangular base, sloped roof, and compartments inside for the pigeons.
Dimensions: Decide on the size based on the number of pigeons you plan to house. A standard coop for a small flock might be 4 feet wide, 3 feet deep, and 5 feet high.
2. Preparing the Bamboo
Cutting Bamboo: Use a saw to cut bamboo poles according to your design. Ensure the poles are clean, free from splits, and dried to prevent shrinking.
Treating Bamboo: Consider treating the bamboo with natural oils to make it more durable and resistant to insects.
3. Building the Frame
Base: Start by building the base using wooden planks. Secure the corners with nails.
Vertical Posts: Attach bamboo poles to the base, which will serve as the vertical posts of the coop. Ensure they are evenly spaced and firmly attached.
Horizontal Beams: Connect the vertical posts with horizontal bamboo poles at the top and midway up the posts to create a sturdy frame.
4. Constructing the Walls
Bamboo Panels: Create panels by tying smaller bamboo pieces together with rope or twine. These will form the sides of your coop.
Chicken Wire: Attach chicken wire to the bamboo frame, securing it with nails or staples. This will keep your pigeons safe while allowing airflow.
5. Building the Roof
Frame: Use bamboo poles to create the roof's frame. A sloped roof is ideal for rainwater runoff.
Roof Covering: Cover the roof with bamboo panels or thatch for a more rustic look. Ensure it’s waterproof to protect your pigeons from the elements.
6. Adding the Door
Frame the Door: Create a door frame using bamboo or wooden planks. Ensure it fits snugly within the coop’s opening.
Attach the Door: Use hinges to attach the door to the coop. Add a latch to secure it.
7. Internal Compartments
Perches and Nesting Areas: Inside the coop, add horizontal bamboo perches and nesting boxes. Ensure they are at different heights to accommodate multiple pigeons.
Flooring: Consider adding a wooden or bamboo floor. Elevate it slightly for easy cleaning.
8. Final Touches
Decoration: To make your coop unique, consider adding decorative elements like carved bamboo designs or painting the bamboo with natural colors.
Ventilation: Ensure there is adequate ventilation to keep the pigeons healthy. Bamboo slats or additional chicken wire windows can help.
9. Maintenance Tips
Regularly check the structure for any signs of wear or damage.
Clean the coop weekly to prevent the buildup of droppings and to ensure a healthy environment for your pigeons.

Top 7 Tips & Tricks for a Stylish Look with Wooden Decor, Advantages and Types of Wood
wooden decor has an unmatched appeal, which adds warmth and character. Whether your style is modern rustic or cozy cabin, adding wooden pieces to your design can instantly improve the atmosphere in your house. We'll go over seven ideas in this blog post for using wooden decor to give your living area a fashionable and welcoming appearance.
Combine Various Textures
Mixing various textures is one of the secrets to designing a visually appealing and dynamic setting. To give your interiors more depth and dimension, think about combining different finishes and textures with your wooden furniture. For instance, combine rough-hewn details like driftwood wall art or salvaged wood shelving with polished, smooth hardwood furniture.
Harmony with Other Materials
Although wooden home decor might be the main attraction in your design, it's important to balance it with other materials to keep your room from being overly flat. Use components such as fabrics, glass, or metal decor to create contrast and visual interest. For a modern touch, consider pairing a sleek hardwood dining table with metal chairs, or soften the effect with neutral-toned upholstered seats.
Play Around With Proportion And Scale
To make sure your wooden decor items match the size of your room and other furnishings, pay attention to their scale and proportion. A massive driftwood mirror or a chunky wooden coffee table are two examples of oversized wooden statement pieces that may anchor and create a focal point in a space. On the other hand, subtle details like decorative bowls or wooden candle holders provide flair to a room without taking over.
Include Natural Components
Along with your wooden design, include additional natural components to embrace the beauty of nature. To create a peaceful and harmonious space, bring the outside in with potted plants, fresh flowers, or botanical prints. Adding natural light to your room with translucent curtains or wooden blinds may help make it feel more cozy and natural.

DIY Projects And Upcycling
To add a distinctive touch to your house and customize your wooden furniture, be creative with upcycling and DIY projects. Think of turning old wooden pallets into wall shelves, building a planter pot out of salvaged wood planks, or staining furniture that isn't completed to complement your current interior design scheme. These projects not only fit any budget, but they also let you show off your artistic and technical abilities.
Layer with accessories and textiles
Layer drapes and accessories over your wooden furniture to soften the way it looks. To create warmth and comfort in your room, use accent sofa cushions, cozy blankets, and soft carpets in similar hues and patterns. To add personality and reflect your own taste, place decorative items such as wooden floor lamps, framed artwork, woven baskets, or ceramic vases on display.
Love Minimalism
Make your decor minimalistic for a sleek, modern effect. Choose a small number of statement pieces that have a big effect to emphasize quality over quantity. To create a sense of peace and refinement, keep surfaces clear of dirt and use basic shapes and clean lines.

WK 2 - Plane, Balance and Site
My materials of choice were wooden planks and I chose to manipulate those using a ban-saw, drill, hammer, chisel and sanding machine. I joined two planks by measuring on each plank a 1 inch wide x 7 inches long rectangle and used the ban-saw to cut this shape into both. I used a chisel and hammer to remove the hard to reach leftover chunks and this allowed them to join smoothly. I used a scrap semi-circle plank of wood that I found in the leftovers box and measured a similar rectangle for it to slide onto the structure. These points were a balancing act and the structure would collapse if placed on the wrong angle.
I used the drill and placed the circular extension onto it to create a hole in one of the planks. I re-used this chunk and played with balance in many ways. I manipulated the amount of light that could be projected onto the space (like an eclipse effect), I balanced it to see where its limits were and I carefully balanced it in the hole (thanks to the grit of the un-sanded edges of the circle holding it in place) then breaking this balance again with a scrap rectangle of wood. It became a 'lantern', a light work.
Workshop feedback notes
Positives:
-The projection elements (using sunlight) into the space added dimension
-The message was clear - fertility, cycles, female body, masculine vs feminine, umbilical cord connecting foetus to mother etc.
Improvements:
-Scale could be experimented with
-Experiment more with direction and line
Personal reflection
I enjoy the ephemeral aspects of my work, relying on the sun and wind (the space) to add and/or subtract. The elements of plane and balance were conceptually realised in my work as I was experimental and open to various compositions. This helped me to deduce what enhanced/subtracted from exploring plane/balance.
Enhanced
•Using the circle to manipulate the level of light projected onto the floor - high contrast effect... the space is visually interactive
•Two wooden planks intersecting - Visual portrayal of planes within a space... the skewed structure is slightly unbalanced based on its placement
•Drilling a hole in one plank - creates imbalance... ephemeral qualities of the site showcased... draws viewers eyes to one section as opposed to multiple
Subtracted
•Adding more than two planks to the main structure
•The scale could be enhanced - so it feels more immersive... allows for more interactive features
Materials: Using planks was enjoyable and easily accessible. I enjoyed (similar to steel wire) how malleable it is. However, unlike wire it requires more mechanical aids such as saws and hammers. This does introduce more violent approaches to making, which could be an exiting path to go down for later resolved works.
My approach to making was highly methodical; I carefully measured, cut and sanded my structure, hence it would be interesting to juxtapose in the future.

How to build duck's house bamboo, adorable little yellow ducks
Introduction
Creating a cozy and safe home for your ducks doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Bamboo is an excellent material for this purpose due to its durability and natural insulating properties. This guide will walk you through the steps to build a charming and functional bamboo duck house.
Materials Needed
Bamboo poles (various sizes, depending on your design)
Bamboo stakes or rebar for support
Wooden planks or plywood for flooring (optional for added comfort)
Nails or screws
Hammer or screwdriver
Saw (for cutting bamboo)
Rope or twine (for tying bamboo)
Wire mesh (for ventilation and protection)
Hinges and a latch (for the door)
Tools Needed
Measuring tape
Pencil
Hand saw or circular saw
Drill
Pliers
Step-by-Step Instructions1. Planning and Measuring
Determine Size: Decide on the dimensions of the duck house. A good size for a small duck house is approximately 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 2.5 feet tall. Adjust the size based on the number of ducks you have.
Sketch Your Design: Draw a simple plan of the house, including the base, walls, roof, and door. Consider adding a small overhang on the roof for extra protection from the elements.
2. Preparing the Bamboo
Select Bamboo: Choose strong, straight bamboo poles. You’ll need poles for the frame (vertical and horizontal) and additional poles for the walls and roof.
Cut Bamboo: Use a saw to cut the bamboo to the lengths you need according to your design. For the frame, cut four vertical poles for the corners and horizontal poles for the top and bottom.
3. Building the Frame
Assemble the Frame: Lay out the vertical poles and connect them with horizontal poles to form a rectangular frame. Secure the joints by tying them with rope or twine. For added stability, you can use nails or screws.
Install Support Stakes: Drive bamboo stakes or rebar into the ground at the corners of the frame for extra support. Secure the frame to these supports.
4. Constructing the Walls
Attach Bamboo Walls: Cut additional bamboo poles to fit the height of the walls. Attach these vertically to the frame, spacing them about 4-6 inches apart. Secure them with rope or twine.
Add Wire Mesh: For ventilation and protection, cover the gaps between the bamboo poles with wire mesh. Staple or nail the mesh to the bamboo.
5. Building the Roof
Create Roof Frame: Construct a simple pitched roof frame using bamboo poles. Attach the roof frame to the top of the wall frame.
Cover the Roof: Use bamboo strips or wooden planks to cover the roof frame. Make sure it extends over the sides to protect the ducks from rain.
6. Installing the Floor (Optional)
Lay Down Flooring: If you want to add a wooden floor for extra comfort, place wooden planks or plywood inside the house. Secure them to the bamboo frame with nails or screws.
7. Adding a Door
**Cut A Do
Attach Door Hinges: Attach a bamboo or wooden door to the opening using hinges. Add a latch to keep the door securely closed when needed.
8. Finishing Touches
Smooth Edges: Sand any rough edges of the bamboo to prevent injury to your ducks.
Check Stability: Ensure that all parts of the house are securely fastened and that the structure is stable.
9. Placing the Duck House
Choose a Location: Place the duck house in a shaded, dry area away from strong winds and direct sunlight. Ensure it’s on level ground.
Add Bedding: Line the interior with straw or wood shavings for comfort and insulation.
Concluded
Your bamboo duck house is now ready to welcome your adorable little yellow ducks! Regularly check the house for any maintenance needs and ensure it remains a safe and comfortable haven for your feathered friends.

Francesca Woodman Research Paper - Delaney
Francesca Woodman was an American photographer born in 1958 to a family of artists, her mother being a ceramist and a sculptor and her father a painter. Her work tended to explore the connection between the human body, most often the female form and the environment, whether that was the wallpaper of the room or the clothes on her back, and was known for the “sophistication of her images” and content from a young age (“Francesca Woodman”). Yet, being heavily inspired by Surrealism, her photography, especially her attempts at fashion photography, was sometimes critiqued as too “avant-garde” for the time (The Woodmans). As an artist, Woodman strived to “condense experience into small images that contain all the mystery of fear or whatever it is that’s latent in the eyes of the viewer, and bring it out as though it were her own experience,” (“The Lady of the Glove”). The two collections I will examine are examples of her success in evoking that feeling through differing content, technique, and messaging. Yet, both collections exemplify what I feel is the most intriguing of Woodman’s subjects, which is the care she took in portraying the female form. The first collection consists of five photographs that are all part of a series titled Swan Song' taken in 1978 while Woodman was still a student attending the Rhode Island School of Design (“Francesca Woodman”). The second collection consists of photographs taken by Woodman between 1979-1980 in New York. These photographs portray her take on fashion photography and were featured in an exhibit at the Marian Goodman Gallery titled I’m Trying My Hand at Fashion Photography, the title stemming from Francesca’s habit of writing and sending letters on the back of her photographs which in one sent to her parents in 1977 she announced “I’m trying my hand at fashion photography” (“Letters Exchanged”). I have narrowed this collection to eight photographs that I feel capture the essence of Woodman’s fashion work at the time.
The Swan Song series of photographs were all taken in the same space, a room with wooden planks running vertically across the floor and a stark white bench placed horizontally across the scene. In two of the photographs (From Swan Song series, Providence, Rhode Island BFA 3.0 and BFA.05), a patchwork quilt covers part of the floor under the bench, disrupting the vertical lines of the wooden planks. The photographs have the same base subjects, being a self-portrait featuring the nude body, sometimes wrapped in sheets, laying on the white bench, and each photo includes a different form of swan imagery laying on the bench next to her body, such as drawings of wings or what appears to be a bird figurine. Throughout the series, different body parts are covered while others are exposed, however, the subject’s face is never seen. The camera is placed high above looking straight down at the subject as if mounted to the ceiling. Because these are self-portraits, the photographs also include an object that gives insight into the staged performativity of the photos (in opposition to candidness); the black cord of a cable release that spirals and extends across the bench. Blurriness of movement is depicted in some of the photographs, implying a long shutter speed was used. The lighting of these photographs is interesting, with the nude body seemingly overexposed and lacking detailed gray tones, while the floor in many would become completely dark on one side of the bench or other. Overall, the blacks and whites add to the emotions of turmoil Woodman is evoking, but mean the photos lack an aspect of dimension that other works are better able to capture.
The I’m Trying My Hand at Fashion Photography collection of the photos were taken in New York but for many it is hard to tell where, as they seem to be taken in nondescript rooms. Two, however, are taken seemingly at quintessential New York locations. Both portray women laying across the scene, one portraying a woman laying in what seems to be a National History Museum diorama and one portraying a woman laying across the base of one of the famous New York Public Library lion statues. As subjects, the photos in this collection all experiment with the presentation of clothing and fashion. Unlike classic fashion photography from the time that focused more on the garment, Woodman’s fashion photography was more abstract, playing with the garments in connection with the space and form and evoking specific emotions. Looking at the photographs from a more technical point of view, the color of these photographs are deeper than the Swan Song series. These photographs display very even tones, with rich blacks, stark whites, and detailed gray tones that allow for the details of the photographs to come across to the audience. Untitled, New York (depicting a woman’s face surrounded by fur coats) is an example of these beautiful gray tones, as the lighting allows for the darkest individual strands of fur on the coats to be seen while the lightness of the subject’s skin contrasts the coats without being washed out. This is very different from the unevenly exposed nature of the Swan Series, and shows Woodman’s impressive technical knowledge of the camera and lighting. Both collections also are very performative and do not strive for creating candid moments, rather are very intentional about the placement of the subjects.
These collections elicit very different emotions from the viewer and portray very different emotions through their subjects, with the Swan Song series eliciting a sense of turmoil and discomfort while I’m Trying My Hand at Fashion Photography seems to be more interested in stillness. Both however are very effective at influencing the audience to experience the emotions themselves. In BFA.05 from the Swan Song series, Woodman lies across the white bench with everything but her legs and one arm covered by a white sheet. A single wing of a bird lies on the bench to the left and a long shutter speed means Woodman is able to use movement of the sheet of fabric to create a sense of movement that mimics the shape and idea of a bird wing. The fabric and her leg both have a trail of translucency showing the pathway of movement, implying that the subject is turning from her back to her side. This movement, its bird likeness, along with the subject's pose, a slightly arched mid-writhe, evokes the idea that she is agonizing over her similarity to the cut, single wing laying on the bench next to her. She is longing to move and to act yet is unable to make anything happen. By capturing this movement in the photos of this series, Woodman depicts the physicality of this turmoil and influences the audience to acknowledge the familiarity of this inner turmoil physically embodied. Untitled, New York (depicting two women separated by lace), on the other hand, shows the stillness of Woodman’s fashion photography that contradicts her Swan Song series. In the photograph, a woman stands at the center with her belly to head in the frame. Her elbow is raised above her head, as her face is hiding in the crease. She is wearing a light-colored dress and a piece of black lace runs across the frame, covering from her breasts to her eyes, while another woman wearing a dark dress stands in front of the fabric to the left of the frame, with half of her back and her hand reaching across her neck being seen by the camera. The lace fabric is taut at the bottom but slightly slack and folded at the top. The subjects are in focus and the colors are soft, making use of many gray tones. These aspects of the photo are common in this collection. Subjects are still, allowing the fabric to drape and lie naturally in the scene, evoking a sense of quietness that allows the audience to fully take in the garment and how it falls on the body.
The two collections are inherently rather opposite from each other in content as well as emotion. Swan Song is interested in exploring emotions through the naked form while I’m Trying My Hand at Fashion Photography is inherently focused on the objects that cover a form, clothes and fashion. However, they both include the aspect of Woodman’s work that I find most fascinating, her Woodman’s treatment of the female body which invokes it as both a body that is lived in and resilient and as art, something beautiful and elegant. BFA.06 from the Swan Song series and the Untitled, New York, depicting the woman laying across the lion to be the best examples of this. In BFA.06, Woodman lies vertically across the bench with her neck and legs hanging off and a sheet draped across her stomach to the top of her thighs. A drawing of a bird's wings sit on the bench to her left, its open wing span parallelling the open and arched position of Woodman’s chest. Similarly, Untitled, New York portrays a female form lying next to an animal form, in this instance a lion. The woman is laying on her side in an elegant black dress. Her top half is very placed, with her arm posed above her head and the dress draped across her shoulder. Her lower half however is more natural, knees together but legs spread in a way that is unflattering for the shape of the dress. In both of these photos, Woodman captures the body moving as the body does, even if it is not specifically flattering or delicate, yet retains a sense of beauty for both the posed and natural female form. The female form has been a central part of art for centuries, yet so often this art is either a man glorifying the woman’s body for its beauty and sexuality or a woman coming to terms with her body as it exists outside of the male gaze. Woodman’s brilliance lies in her ability to take photographs that find the balance of portraying the female form as beautiful without degrading it, and as flawed without being hostile to it.

The room was truly cavernous. Inosuke would begin to discover that in today's lesson. It was almost as if the temple's walls molded around the two, predator and prey, lengthening to prolong the hunt. The floor was smooth wooden planks. Certain spots may have allowed for little fingers to slip between the cracks and pry something out, but the time he would have crouched, the beast's tusks would have sunk through his back and paraded him around like a ragdoll. Its hooves made that horrible sound against the wound, a rattling that crawled all the way up to the ceiling docks.
And yet none of it would be heard outside. Inosuke should know by now how treacherous this place was. Some rooms were different than others. As if they belonged to a different dimension all together.
Dōma sits in the middle, watching them go around in circles. Watching his pupil bolt and the iceborn beast nearly reach him - the points of each tusk a mere hair away from Inosuke's spine. The everlasting smile gradually falters to a frown, feigning worry. A finger taps his own chin in supposed contemplation.
❝ Uuuuh... well, you're not going to get very far just trying to outrun him. He has four legs, you know. And you only have two. ❞ So, Inosuke is already at a disadvantage. And a great one at that. This creature is made of pure ice — but that is not to say it's smoothly textured. A testament to Dōma's proficiency; it even bares the thin lines marking fur along its body, even if it's not swayed with the movements. So, there is at least plenty to grab onto.
But he would have to turn around for that. He would need to somehow turn around, against a wall, against something to offer the tiniest bit of leverage and grab that thing by the teeth before they sink into his flesh — and that takes more than just flexibility, doesn't it? He's watched the child climb trees faster than a monkey and follow the temple cats up rooftops and dangle from the ledges; and he knows Inosuke has the potential to do it. He has the potential to ride that beast, if he wants.
He just has to believe it a little bit, doesn't he?
❝ Ah, you heart is racing so loud right now. No wonder you cannot hear your own thoughts. ❞ Their head cants, unmoving from their spot in the middle of the floor. There's that smile again; the one they wear when patronizing him with reverberations of the scriptures.
❝ Maybe you should try to calm down a little bit and change your point of view. He's not here to be your enemy. ❞ Teeth press into a grin. ❝ I thought you liked watching the wild ones in the forest. You know. When you sneak outside during meditation. ❞ Has Inosuke really thought he would not notice? That there would be happenings the omnipresent Lord was not aware of, under his own roof?
