The Softest Fire (Part 5)

Prompt: Rosaline Vaughan had it all: fame, money, power, glory, a high status job. Until, one day, she woke up, and realized something was missing from her life.

Life wasn’t terrible. I still went to an amazing job every day, got to see my fantastic cousin and loving Aunt and Uncle quite often, I had made a few friends outside of Newt, Theseus, and Nora. Mainly people who frequented Nora’s shop and a few old colleagues from the Ministry. I suppose I clinged to a social distraction since far too often I was forced to listen to Newt pine and yearn for Tina.

It was either a new letter, to which he excitedly ripped open and would read at the table before telling me all of the contents. Or he was bragging about her in general, or wondering what she was doing. It was entirely maddening. 

I thought it might get easier with time, that I might build up an immunity to it, or become desensitized somehow, but it actually made it all the worse. Possibly because I was still very much in love with him, and that hadn’t diminished at all. Watching the person you love fawn over someone else has to be one of the most cruel fates imaginable. 

Although, for a brief moment, my heartbreak took a backseat when Theseus stopped by to see Newt. He popped in and I told him Newt was downstairs. I was merely gathering some firewood for a small fire down there. 

“Oh, tell him I’m here, if you don’t mind,” Theseus requested. 

“Sure thing. It’s good to see you. What’ve you been up to?” I wondered as I picked up some logs. 

“Well, actually, I got engaged.” 

“Engaged? Well congratulations,” I said with a grin. “I could cook you and your family some dinner, as a celebration?” I offered.

“We’d like that.”

“So who is the lucky girl?” I asked, still stacking logs.

“Leta Lestrange.”

I froze, clutching the logs in my hand. 

“Leta… Lestrange?” I questioned, hoping I was delusional for a moment. Maybe a bowtruckle was actually in my ear. 

“Yes? Why, is that a problem?” he inquired innocently. 

I looked him in the eye and shook my head. “Not a problem at all, Theseus. I just had no idea you associated with trash, that’s all.” I flashed a superficial smile. “I’ll tell Newt you’re here.” I descended the steps to the basement and tossed the wood in a stack.

“Rosaline?”

“Hmm?” I hummed, keeping my anger out of my voice. 

“Are you alright? You seem… upset?”

“Upset? No. No I’m not upset. Your brother is engaged to the worst person to walk this planet, that’s all.”

Newt nodded. “Ah, he told you did he?”

“Yes, he did. So that’s why you were late last night…”

“Yes, I was at the engagement party.” He appeared guilty. He knew how much you weren’t a fan of Leta’s. “I should’ve told you.”

“Why? It’s none of my business who your brother marries. Just know he’s in for a world of trouble.” 

“She isn’t all that bad.” 

I stopped assembling the wood in a proper manner, turning to him. “You know, Newt, one day, you’re going to realize that Leta is never going to be a good person. It might be too late, but people like Leta don’t change. She didn’t bat an eye when you were punished for her crime. What do you think she’ll do to your brother? Speaking of, he’s waiting for you upstairs.” I stared him down, wondering if he would challenge me or go speak to Theseus. He eyed me up and down before letting out a soft sigh and ascending the stairs. 

This got under my skin more than it should have, but Leta, being a part of their family… It felt so wrong. I just knew she was a problem for someone, somehow she would make their lives complicated and they didn’t deserve that.

The next morning, nearly lunch time, Nora stopped by, mainly to visit me and the creatures. She offered to help feed the grindylows. I happily accepted the help while I got the other food ready.

“Oh, Merlin’s beard, you won’t believe what I found out last night,” I began.

“What’s that?” Nora wondered.

“Apparently Theseus Scamander was dating Leta Lestrange, did you know this?”

She bobbed her head. “Newt had mentioned something like that a while ago.”

I shook my head from anger. “Yes, well he apparently has lost his bloody mind and asked that horrible excuse for a human to marry him. Can you believe it? Ridiculous…” 

“Mmm…” Nora nodded and went back to feeding the grindylows in the tank. “Yeah, I know. It’s hard to believe. Seems like yesterday you two were graduating and now she’s engaged to… to Theseus.” 

“Ugh, don’t remind me that we attended school together. She doesn’t deserve the name Hogwarts on her record.”

“Yeah,” she mused, sounding half-disinterested.

“Cousin? What’s the matter? Are you just as mad as me about this engagement?” I questioned.

“Hmm? Oh… yes, that’s it.”

I peered at her. “No… No it isn’t. What’s really wrong? You aren’t mad at all… You’re sad… But why would you be sad…” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, it hit me. “Oh… Oh, Merlin! You like him, don’t you?”

Nora sighed. “Mmm… Yeah… Maybe a little.” 

I stood with my mouth slightly open before scowling. “Well now I hate Leta all the more…” I nearly spit her name. I knew I didn’t like that slimy little witch… “Cousin,” I said, getting closer and putting my hand on her arm, “is there anything I can do? Shall I tell Theseus for you?”

She shook her head, stepping away from the tank, wiping her hands on her pants. “No, I’ll be fine. Abraham from the pub a couple of doors down from my store invited me to dinner. Might see how that goes.” 

I frowned at her though, worried for her. “Nora, I can’t allow you to settle and ignore your feelings. You need to go to him, tell him how you feel,” I encouraged.

Nora’s face whipped to mine, abandoning the animals she was tending to. “Whoa, I didn’t realize I wasn’t allowed to move on! Clearly I should take your advice, seeing as you’re so wonderful at acting on your own feelings.” 

I looked at her, absorbing the verbal attack. Her words had made me feel as though I’d been slapped, but years of training allowed me to keep my face stoic and calm. 

“That’s a completely different situation, Nora….” 

"Great. Then I won't overstep and offer solutions where none are needed."

“Nora--” I started, but stopped as Newt descended the stairs into the basement. He sat down the bucket in his hand before leaning over and touching her shoulder. 

“I’m sorry again about Theseus,” he said quietly. 

“You don’t have to apologize for him. I’m sorry for you too, with it being Leta and all.”

My eyes narrowed. “Wait… Newt… you… you know how she feels about Theseus?”

Newt’s eyes danced between me and Nora. “Well… yes, she told me one day. She had warned me, well, you tell her,” he instructed, gesturing from Nora to me.

She peered at me, letting out a sigh. “I didn’t really mean to. I had just said one day if I was in a bad mood it was because I hadn't been managing my emotions well and had recently realized my feelings for Theseus.” She pressed her lips together. “His brother is quite handsome.”

“Of course, I appreciated her not being cryptic about it. I don’t like having to figure out what people are thinking or what they feel,” he interjected, gazing at me. “It was quite nice.”

My eyes were narrowed on them both, not really registering their words any more. “How long has he known?” I demanded, suddenly feeling some sort of betrayal for being out of the loop. 

They peered at each other. “Two years?” Nora offered.

“Two years?” I echoed, shock and near horror in my voice. “What the… what the hell? Nora, I’m your sister, practically. Newt, you’re my best friend, why am I the last to know?”

“It’s really not that big of a deal,” she dismissed. 

“Not that big of a deal?”

“Well in the grand scheme of everything else going on? An impending war between the wizarding world and muggles,” she reminded.

“I don’t care if the whole world is in ashes, I should’ve seen this before now.” I stared down at the floor and then back up at them. “How did I not know about this?” I wondered, sounding almost powerless. 

Nora shrugged. “You’ve had other things to worry about. I didn’t want to ruin your focus, so I didn’t bother telling you. It wasn’t a matter of hiding something from you. I just didn’t want to burden you with something that wasn’t earth-shattering level of importance at the time.” 

I peered at her, nodding. “Right… Well, are you just going to… move on then?”

“What do you suggest I do?” she remarked. 

At this, I couldn’t help but press my lips together and nod slightly. “I… suppose you’re right. If the person you love wants someone else, there’s hardly anything you can do,” I acknowledged.

A little under a week later, I stopped by Nora’s place for some girl chat. Just a social visit. We discussed work a little bit, and some happenings in the city before I finally spoke what had been on my mind for a while now. 

“Nora,” I began, dragging her name out.

“Hmm?” 

“May I ask you something?”

“I don’t see myself stopping you, go ahead,” she encouraged with quick wit. 

I tried my best to suppress a smile. “Um, why Theseus?” I questioned carefully before dropping sugar into my tea. Nora didn’t exactly seem inclined to speak, so I continued. “I only ask because, well... he stands for everything you’re against. He and I are much more alike, and you and I hardly ever see eye to eye. Not to mention, as far as I know, you two don’t have a history at the Ministry or Hogwarts so… where did this feeling blossom from?” 

“I don’t quite understand what you mean. If you’re talking about getting the job done, no matter the cost, that may be, but he doesn’t stand in direct opposition of my beliefs.” She sighs and folds her arms. “I recognize that he may lack knowledge in some areas, but that doesn’t change who he is and tries to be. He’s a good man who wants to take care of his family. He’s an excellent leader. Tries to protect his men where he can. He’s kind and gentle with those he cares about most. His sense of humor could use some work, I’ll admit, but he’s got a beautiful smile. A big heart. He’s not what you would look for in a partner, but he doesn’t need to be.”

I nodded. “Mm,” I hummed before sipping. “And just how did you find all of this out?”

“It wasn’t intentional, I don’t think. We spent some time together when I worked at the Ministry. He and I would eat lunch together when we were able and we’d just talk. Nothing serious, but it was obvious by the way he talked about his mother and Newt that he cared for them deeply.” She bites her lip. “Do you remember that month I was getting my shop off the ground? During your last year of training?”

It took me a moment but then I nodded, remembering. “Yes. What about it?”

“There was a point where he was helping me out a couple days a week after he finished at work. He and Newt organized the grand opening.”

I frowned deeply. “I keep finding things out about the Scamander’s that I wasn’t privy to.” An eyebrow shoots up, giving her a look. “So, I’m going to assume it was during this time that you started to fall for the older Scamander?” 

She shrugs. “I don’t think there was any point where I noticed I had started to fall for him. It was just there one day.” She pauses, brow furrowing. “I didn’t tell you about his help because he asked me to keep quiet about it. He never cared about getting credit.”

A soft smile played on my lips. “So he’s softer than I presumed. Interesting. So you’re really just going to sit by and let the most horrid witch in the wizarding world marry him?”

“She has to have some redeeming qualities if Theseus proposed to her. And if he and I were meant to be at any point, that time has long passed.”

I shook my head. “I just don’t believe that. I think she has him under some spell. No one can care for a girl like that, and she can’t care for anyone in return.” I pressed my lips together in disgust. “You deserve happiness, Nora, not her.”

“I understand that you don’t care for her, but it’s not my place to deny anyone happiness. Or yours, for that matter. I’ve talked to Theseus since he’s become engaged. Newt has as well. Do you not trust us to recognize when someone close to us has been bewitched?”

I scoffed slightly. “You know damned well that’s not it. I just… Ugh, it just irks me deeply to see you go without love, that’s all.” I sighed. “So you’ve talked to him? What has Theseus said about it? Did you mention being madly in love with him?” 

“I absolutely did not. I asked after his mother and congratulated him on his engagement. He seems happy.” She frowns. “You seem to think my only chance at happiness is with Theseus. How do you know I won’t find someone else? Or is this just your vendetta against Leta?”

“Why can’t it be both?” I peered at her before taking her hand in mine. “Nora, I don’t think your happiness lies with any man, let alone any one man. I think your happiness lies with you alone, but I also know just how badly it can hurt to watch the man you care for, love another. If you should find another man, I’ll be glad to support you two. But right now, he is what you want, so he is what I’m fighting for, that’s all.”

“I appreciate that, but I’m fine, darling. I never actively pursued him. I don’t actively want him. Appreciating someone is enough for me.” Her eyes narrow. “I’m not going to be able to convince you, am I?”

I looked off in the distance, bobbing my head. “If you truly feel that way, I will back off and leave both of you alone.” I held up my hands in surrender. 

“Thank you. I’m sure they’ll appreciate that too.”

“A Not-So-Simple Story in Deapriffe”

I’m posting the first 3 chapters of my WIP book! I’d love it if anyone could give it a read.

It is the story of a factory worker in a city that has spent decades under the thumb of a gang, as well as the daughter of the gang’s boss. When their perfectly typical days lead to their lives colliding, they are left with an opportunity to fight back once and for all.

Chapter One: A Not-So-Unusual Morning

Deapriffe was a city that knew when to die. It was just past nine o’clock on a Wednesday morning and the lines of freshly-opened shops around Lord Way were shuttered. The contents of one deli’s food delivery lay half-scattered across the damp pavement. Bars had locked over every home’s door. Windows hid behind plates of steel and wood. On the roads, every car had careened to the side, their engines cut and their drivers huddled under the dashboards. The blue sky was crisp and pals, yet shadows dirtied every corner. The lampposts were unlit, the shops’ neon signs had dulled, and the billboard stretching over the face of the area’s central high-rise glowed black.

Above the usual litter skittering in the breeze, a distinct rattling chimed through the wide, barren roads and through every thin residential alleyway. Tucked around the corner from the main road, in front of a line of terraced flat buildings, was a skinny, pink-coated parent, called Mx. Jenkins by most. They wrestled with the bars on their front door. Their shopping bags lay half-a-street behind them in a gutter.

The last person to get inside Mx. Jenkins’ flat building had, in their hurry, slammed the iron gate shut onto the padlock, bending it around the bars. Even as Mx. Jenkins wormed their trembling fingers into the gap, they couldn’t wrench it free. Tears stung their eyes. Their breathing becoming harder and harder to steady, they gritted their teeth and gave a great tug on the bars. The hinges screeched. Mx. Jenkins slapped a hand over their shriek and leapt back against the brick. Their eyes darted. They watched. They waited. Then, they edged back to their jammed gate once more. The rattling began again and, a road over, a woman followed it closer: a burly, well-suited woman, known in her line of work as ‘Thresher’.

Thresher’s black and white suit cut a clean line through the vast, emptied roads: its signature pattern only one of the reasons she and the rest of her organisation had earnt the name ‘Sharks’, as well as where Thresher had acquired hers. She reached the corner behind Mx. Jenkins and her tread slowed. Her thick silver watch and encrusted cufflinks glinted in the chance light while a large fist steadied the gun holster on her belt. She peered around the corner as their back was turned to her, their eyes boring into the broken padlock as their fingers wriggled around the metal. Thresher didn’t waste time.

She darted out from past the corner, rushing them. Mx. Jenkins snapped around at the footsteps. They couldn’t scream before Thresher clamped her broad hand over their mouth and grabbed their arm to drag them against the wall. Mx. Jenkin’s elbow snapped back, yet it hit a wall of fat and muscle. They bucked away. They cried out. Still, they remained muffled and immovable in Thresher’s grip. Thresher glanced around, gritting her teeth.

“Ssh! Ssh! Don’t worry! Don’t worry!” she told them, her voice hushed, high, and quick. “You’ve got to calm down or you’re going to be caught. The other Shark’s just on Lord Way.”

Mx. Jenkin’s faltered for one half-second. Then, they kicked back at Thresher with their boot’s heel. Wincing, she kept her hands pressed around their arm and mouth as she turned them around. Their eyes bulged, quivering at her. She attempted a comforting smile.

“No need to worry! I’m going to get you out of here. But it’s really important you don’t run or scream. Please! We can’t risk the other Shark finding you. We’ll…” Thresher’s eyes landed on the padlock. “Oh! I can get you inside. Quick! I’ll shoot the lock off. Don’t run. Just- Just cover your ears. You’ll be fine in a moment!”

Thresher released her hand from Mx. Jenkin’s mouth and, mercifully, they did not make a sound. Rather, their face had gone completely slack, all attempts at comprehension failing.

Thresher spared a glance at the main road. She kept hold of their arm. It took more effort to do with one hand but she took out her pistol, cocked it, and aimed. Mx. Jenkins slapped their hands over their ears just in time. Thresher blasted the padlock off the shutter. The gunshot cracked through every inch of the emptied road as the bullet splintered the lock and doorframe. Mx. Jenkins leapt back, barely kept on their shaking legs by Thresher. Thresher ripped the barred gate open off the door and hauled them up to the door’s keypad.

“Go! Go! You can get a new lock later,” she whispered, her voice pitching. “We’re leaving soon anyway. You’ve got to be safer next time! You can’t trust I’ll be there to save you.”

Mx. Jenkins fumbled with the code. The second the keypad blinked green, Thresher shoved them through their flat door.

“THRESHER!”

Thresher threw the gate closed after Mx. Jenkins. She darted away from the flat and holstered her pistol. Now, it was one out of a hundred.

“THRESHER, COME ON, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?”

She allowed herself a single sigh. “FINLEY?” she called back, deeper.

A large young man appeared on the junction at the end of the pavement: Thresher’s twin brother. Finley Vaughan scowled and rolled his eyes, a bag from Regent’s Wine hiked over his shoulder. He wore the same style of suit as Thresher: the colours as crisp as the tailoring with distinct white panels running down the blazer’s front. Even though Thresher and Finley weren’t identical, with matching suits, matching bulk, and their father’s prominent nose, she was a clear reflection of her brother. Although, a reflection as seen through a puddle: more squashed, with splashes of freckles, and with muddier hair.

Finley marched down the pavement. “Thanks for ditching me at the shop. What were you doing, leaving me like that?”

Thresher shrugged. “You and Mum always complain about the wine I pick.”

“That’s because you always go for the cheap crap!”

“So, you know why I ditched you.”

He smacked her in the back of the head.

“I heard a gunshot. Who’d you see?” Finley said, looking around and grinning.

“Don’t get excited. I was just bored. Doing some target practice.” Thresher waved her hand at a random florist’s down the road. Its mottled green and pink hanging sign creaked, unlit, above the door. “I missed.”

“Of course you did. Try aiming for that car over there. Maybe then you’ll hit it,” he said.

As Thresher looked for the car in question, Finley grabbed his own gun and fired.

“AH!” Thresher didn’t get to cover her ears. Even after over twenty years surrounded by them, she could only get so used to gunshots going off unprompted right in front of her. She rapped the heel of her palm against her ear, trying to get the high whining to go away. Meanwhile, Finley squinted at the florist’s.

“Did I get it?”

She glanced up. “Doesn’t look like it.”

Finley went to load his gun a second time but Thresher pulled his hand down. “Come on. Mum’s going to be pissed if we waste bullets,” she said.

“The only person she’s getting pissed off at is you, Dolphin,” he replied, matter-of-factly. He slotted his gun back onto his belt then grabbed the back of Thresher’s blazer, dragging her with him to their pick-up point.

“GRRK-! Finley!” Thresher turned her choking into a laugh as she tried to ease herself out of her brother’s grip.

Finley returned the challenge: his smile the warning all younger siblings knew. Even with one hand holding the wine bag, he wrangled his thick arm around Thresher’s neck and got her stumbling around at his chest level.

“Hey, we can get Mum some flowers,” he said. “Maybe that’ll make her forget you made us late.”

He stepped towards the florist’s shuttered doors and Thresher wrenched herself out of his hold, cutting across him towards the florist’s. She grabbed a bouquet from the display outside and thrust them at Finley before he made it a third step nearer.

“Mum loves lilies!”

Her imploring eyes grated against Finley’s. The mirth in his expression melted. “You’re lucky we’re late…”

He resumed a fast pace down the road. Thresher stopped first to neaten her suit. Then, when she followed, she kept herself just behind.

CCTV cameras watched the two Sharks leave, just as they had watched them arrive. Thresher and Finley piled into a shining white car waiting for them on the main road and any remaining traffic parted for them as they started away, out of the shadow of Lord Way’s billboard.

Perched atop every street corner, the cameras in the area whirred inside their bowls of reinforced glass, searching the streets a final time. The roads remained empty. So, the billboard flickered and an advert for spring fashion blew up the high-rise’s face, dousing the roads in bright blues, greens, yellows, and pinks. The time blinked back into its typical place at the bottom-right corner. A thin news crawl appeared next to it.

SHARK SIGHTING: 2 GUNSHOTS – 1 ATTACK – 0 CASUALTIES.

The screen’s light dawned onto Lord Way. Drivers poked their heads out past the dashboards. They glanced around before pulling themselves back into their seats. Down every road, engines sputtered to a start and the clattering of opening window shutters and squeaking barred gates joined them. Cautious whispers began to return to the streets, then with gossip, then with complaints as Deapriffe’s people rushed back to their schedules.

From his third-floor flat window, Ahmed Al-Faisal watched the rabble reform and his easy smile returned to him. He sat back against the wall, cross-legged on his bed as he finished off his cereal. He supposed it was about time he leave for his work at nine.

Much to the withering stare of his partner Kalyani, Ahmed considered his morning routine an art. In less than ten minutes, he’d changed into his day clothes, neatened his hair and beard, pulled on his prosthetic right foot, collected both his black pride ring and work lanyard, and waltzed out of his flat building’s lift onto the pavement outside. His taped-up headphones blasting, he bobbed along his way to the local bus stop.

Even with the delays on everyone’s face and tongue, the usual sights remained. The morning breeze was cool against Ahmed’s face. Roadside puddles caught the sun whenever it peeked out from behind the clouds. Vivid adverts relit in the shop windows to invite the fresh stream of customers trickling inside from the main pavement. Meanwhile, the ever-present flock of pigeons waddled around all of their feet. As a multiracial person with a distinct gait from his prosthetic foot, Ahmed could rely on catching a few eyes on his way and he liked to count the number of smiles the crowd shot him back. He considered it a personal victory when he got one from a bodyguard shadowing a brisk businesswoman. Ahmed stopped once to pop inside a nearby coffee shop and, after he had the breakfast bagged and in hand, he jumped onto the bus for his commute proper to the factory on Deapriffe’s edge.

Clarke’s Motors was small for a car factory. Still, the main factory still stretched out across an expanse of trees several football pitches big, with the employee car park in front and a test track behind. The air was thick with the smell of grinding metal and oil – the same smell had stuck to Ahmed’s hair and clothes for as long as he could remember. Lines of buildings with peaked roofs packed between a ring of tall, brick offices and steel windows. Every window and door around the back of the offices remained locked, as they had been for years – the brick around them only just supported by scaffolding. Nonetheless, it had succeeded over two decades of steady business in Deapriffe: a feat the Sharks didn’t allow everyone.

The workers’ entrance around the side opened with an electronic lock. Ahmed pulled a playful grimace as he took his key card from his lanyard, anticipating the angry red timestamp. Instead, the automatic door opened with a simple click. A knowing smirk travelled up his face. Kalyani had signed him in already.

Everyone had left the men’s changing room by the time Ahmed arrived so he didn’t waste much time there. He hopped into the break room in the uniform navy t-shirt and cargo trousers with the springy shoes still in his hand, bumping into one other person: a round-faced, bespectacled woman called Debora. The break room was a lounge cluttered with sunken sofas and noise from the assembly shop on the other side of the thick door. The appliances on the kitchenette rattled a permanent tune for the lounge.

Debora turned from the kitchenette’s sink, her hands black with spilled oil. Her thick eyebrows gave her a near cartoon image of surprise before she burst into laughter. “God, Ahmed! Did you just get here?”

Ahmed raised his loaded hands in his defence. “This time, I have an excuse!” He dropped the shoes and coffee shop bag onto one of the sofas. “My whole area was shut down this morning for a Shark sighting.”

Debora’s eyes shot wide. “What!?”

“It was just a trip into town. No-one got hurt,” Ahmed assured her. “’Round my area, they’re pretty common.”

Debora edged back to the sink. Shaking her head, she knocked the tap on with her elbow. “You’ve got to wonder what on earth the world is coming to…You know, the kids gave Marcus and me a heart attack the other week. They left the entrance to our cellar escape wide open!” She scrubbed her hands with an increasing fervour. “We keep telling them it’s for emergencies only, but you try stop a six- and an eight-year-old from playing with a trapdoor.”

“You’ve got a good area, don’t forget,” Ahmed said, leaning to catch Debora’s averted eye. “You’ve had, like, zero Shark sightings total. You’re not near any major shops. It’s not like the Sharks have any reason to go near you. Heck, Kalyani and I are in the centre and even we’ve never–”

The door to the assembly shop slammed open. Debora jumped. Two security guards walked in: the two most notorious security guards in the whole factory.

Barry and Ari – a pair who rhymed their names at random – worked for the boss Clarke directly. They demonstrated the one downside of a company renowned for never having a Shark attack: the security guards had nothing to do. Barry and Ari had the builds of people who’d long since given up on rugby. They wore the standard button-up shirts, protective vests, and heavy belts of the company’s security guards, but neither had bothered with half the required equipment and both had left enough buttons open to expose their casual shirts underneath. Barry, a shorter, blonder man, twirled his baton around, glancing around with bored eyes while Ari, his features dark and cutting, strutted into the main room.

“What’s the all the chatter about?” Ari asked.

Barry leant back against the doorframe, smirking. “Sharks, right?”

Debora glued her eyes to the floor.

“Reminds me of a story…” Ari pulled a face of exaggerated recollection. “You guys all hear about Woodville? A suburb on the east side of Deapriffe? Whole place, completely shot-up, not even three months ago. Could’ve been payback against one. Most are betting it was just target practice.”

Ahmed laughed. The light roll of his eyes drew the attention away from Debora’s shudder. “Everyone’s got a friend who’s got a cousin who’s got a Shark story. I swear I haven’t met anyone who’s actually seen them.” Ahmed looked past Ari and raised a shoe at Debora. “I’ll join you guys in assembly in a minute. This won’t take me long.”

Debora nodded hurriedly. Flashing him a look torn both ways between gratitude and concern, she scrambled past Barry out of the break room. He stepped out of the doorframe to let her pass. Ari started forwards too, strolling closer to Ahmed to stop with his heavy boot on Ahmed’s bare prosthetic foot.

“Easy, easy,” Ahmed said, keeping his tone amicable as he tried to ease his creaking foot out from under Ari’s.

“Why? It’s not like you can feel it.”

“True, but I’d hate to have to go bugging Clarke for a new one.”

Barry sneered. “Clarke’s not here.”

“What?” Ahmed looked up from his laces. “Where’d he go without you two?”

“None of your business,” Barry snapped.

Ari crossed his arms, glaring down at Ahmed. “’Bout time you got here, Al-Faisal. If you keep coming in at a time like this, the company’s going to have to do something about it.”

Ahmed met the glare with his unflappable smile. “Haven’t technically been late yet,” he said. He grabbed his coffee shop bag and got to his feet. “But you’re right. It’s time for me to get to it. Have a good day, guys. Give your feet some rest sometime.” He slipped around Ari and entered the assembly shop proper.

The first thing that hit anyone who visited was the wall of noise: a floor of machines grinding, heavy metal clanking into place, buzzers keeping everything on track, and the chatter of navy-clad workers pushing the whole system along. Wire fencing partitioned the shop, separating stations from stations and humans from machines while rattling furiously under the din. Rising higher still then were the rows of scaffolding. Workers manned the suspended hydraulics from whatever weren’t supporting the crumbling brick at the back of the factory.

Ahmed waved through the fencing at his passing crewmates. When he’d been younger, he’d waved to the mechanical arms making car parts too, the fluidity of their movements convincing him they were alive. That day, one of the human colleagues Ahmed passed was a spiky-haired young man in the conveyance team. He ferried parts from area to area with a pair of large, turquoise headphones locked over his ears, which had earnt him the uncreative nickname of ‘Headphone Guy’.

“Good morning so far?” Ahmed signed.

Headphone Guy’s face flicked with surprise at seeing Ahmed. Then, he mimed a gun against his head and played dead against his trolley. A nearby woman frowned at the sight. She followed Headphone Guy’s eyeline to Ahmed and jabbed her hand back at the assembly line. “HEY, AHMED! READY TO TAKE THIS LOAD OFF ME?” she hollered.

Ahmed laughed – a loud, hearty laugh that boomed through even the clamour; no-one at the factory could have worked there without recognising it. “ONE SEC! GOTTA SEE KALYANI!” He raised the coffee shop bag and waited for the woman to give the conceding jerk of her head before starting towards the company offices.

Ahmed entered a grand foyer through a large, reinforced door that joined the offices to the factory. The doorframe masterfully cut off all the assembly shop’s noise. It transported him into a more elegant world. The ceilings, windows, and doors around him all stretched high while the hanging lights and artwork glowed in warm colours, complementing the elaborate woven carpet and the wooden panelling. Ahmed swung the coffee shop bag behind his back and crossed the empty foyer towards the cosier secretary’s office opposite, poking his head inside with a, “Gooood morning!”

Sitting at the polished desk, as detailed by the brass nameplate by her computer, was Kalyani Venkayya. She was a small, fat Telugu woman who had grown up around the same community as Ahmed’s dad. She had short hair and her lavender shirt cut perfectly smart as always but she’d pulled her legs up onto her chair while she worked. She almost fell off in her hurry to correct herself. She straightened as if sticking an iron rod down her back and slapped on a welcoming smile before she finally recognised Ahmed on the threshold.

“Oh, thank goodness.” She sank into her chair. She set the motheaten jumper in her hand to the side. Kalyani preferred buying her clothes from the men’s sections of shops and she’d readjusted all of them herself. On her breaks or in the absence of any phone calls or meetings to arrange, she usually carried on with whatever extra sewing she, Ahmed, or their neighbours had. “So! You avoided Ari and Barry!”

“Not avoided, but not beat up by! Thanks to you.” Ahmed reached over her desk to give her a one-armed hug.

Kalyani returned it but her face fell in exasperation. “I’m begging you. If you’re late again tomorrow, they’re not going to listen to what the official sign-in sheet says.”

“Yep, I got that impression.” Ahmed gave a melodramatic sigh. “And on today of all days when there was an actual Shark sighting outside our road.”

Kalyani nodded. She kept a sideways glance up at him. “Yes. I’m sure that would been quite the issue for the enby who was sleeping until eight forty.”

“Eh, I’ll give you that.” Ahmed reclined against her desk. “But I got my eight hours sleep! And I’ll end up doing the same amount of work as everyone else anyway so I don’t see the point in stressing about it. Plus…” He flashed her a grin and took the coffee shop bag out from under her desk. “It gave me time to get you breakfast!”

Kalyani’s face lit up. “Pain au chocolat?”

“Your favourite.”

“Thank you! Thank you so much! That’s…” She turned away. Suddenly, the trees outside the window had become very important.

“Got something to tell me?” Ahmed asked in an innocent, sing-song voice.

Kalyani met his eyes and pressed a hand to her heart. “Ahmed, I’ve been in deep, romantic love with you since the moment we met.”

He laughed. He prodded her in the shoulder, rising a smile from her as well. “Fine, keep your secrets!”

It wasn’t an uncommon occurrence around Clarke’s Motors for Ahmed and Kalyani to pronounce their undying, romantic love for each other, particularly whenever one of them wanted to change the topic. Early in their relationship, most people had assumed they were serious. That had led to a few colleagues approaching Ahmed with grave faces as they informed him Kalyani had kissed a man in the conveyance team, to which Ahmed had responded cheerily with the guy’s name, as well as what he and Kalyani had had for breakfast the next morning. Neither Ahmed nor Kalyani blamed people for assuming they were dating; it was an easy mistake to make, just like thinking Ahmed was a man, but a mistake all the same.

Ahmed recognised that most people didn’t know what it meant but the black pride ring on his middle finger was his way of expressing he was asexual – he wasn’t physically attracted to anyone of any gender. Kalyani’s pride ring, meanwhile, was white for her aromantic – she’d had to realise later in life that romantic relationships weren’t supposed to be entirely performative and that most people genuinely wanted one. She and Ahmed wanted different things in that department. Still, they’d lived together as life partners for three years and they didn’t intend on breaking apart.

“How about this?” Kalyani said. “I made sure I have breakfast tomorrow and you come into work early with me.”

“Perfect! We can have breakfast together.”

“Yeah.” Her face glowed. She tapped her fingers against the coffee shop bag. “Thanks for getting this for me. You’re the best. Now, get working before you get us both fired.”

Ahmed laughed. Kalyani pretended to bat him away from her desk. “Kalyani, there’s no way Clarke’s gonna fire me. I grew up here! And trust me, the only way he’d ever fire you is if he wanted this place to go under.” He glanced back at her as he drifted towards the door. “Do you know where he’s gone? He left without Ari or Barry.”

Kalyani frowned. She consulted her computer. “Hm…It looks like I can’t tell you, sorry. It’s not down as a company matter. Maybe he thought he didn’t need them.”

“Good point…I guess he doesn’t go home with them.”

Kalayni’s eyes widened as an email popped up on her screen. “Oh! Got to get back to it!”

“Alright. See you! Love you!” Ahmed called as he left.

“Love you too.” Even Kalyani couldn’t hide her smile beneath the chiding look as she shooed him away.

“Two Years In Prison For Jail Breakers,” Ottawa Journal. June 26, 1918. Page 12. --- Young Gagnon Gets Time Double in Kingston Prison. --- Emery Gagnon, aged 17 years, and Cleophas Belisle, the youthful jail breakers who made their escape from the County Jail yesterday afternoon and were recaptured a few hours later, were sentenced to two years in Kingston Penitentiary, for jail breaking, by Magistrate Askwith in Police Court this morning. When they broke jail, Gagnon was serving a two-year sentence for shop breaking, and Belisle had served two months of a three month sentence for loafing. The sentences imposed on them this morning will run consecutively with the sentences they were serving.

‘Notwithstanding your youthfulness you are dangerous characters to be at large, and if I send you to Kingston Penitentiary I think they will be able to keep you there,’ Magistrate Askwith declared.

Their recapture yesterday afternoon was effected by Inspector Joliet and his squad after an exciting chase through New Edinburgh. Shots were fired by the detectives.

Escaped Via Plank. Gagnon and Bilisle were engaged with several others in putting a new cement floor in the coal shed at the jail in place of the old planking, which had been torn up. The men were carrying stone from the prison yard into the shed under the supervision of Turnkey E. Whitehorn. As the latter turned his back to direct work within the shed, however, the convicts picked up a plank and set it against the wall. Running up this, they dropped into the lane at the back of the prison yard and got clear away.

The police department was immediately notified of the escape. Inspector Joliet and Detective Downey set out in an auto, accompanied by Governor Dawson of the jail, to watch the roads and railway tracks leading from the city. Taking a circuitous route, they skirted the Montreal road and worked along to the back of Notre Dame and Beechwood cemeteries, after searching the bush between Rockcliffe and the river.

Seen Crawling Through Grass. It was on their return by way of Eastview and the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Railway bridge over the Rideau River that they first go on to the trail of their quarry. While Detective Downey took the car over St. Patrick street bridge, the Inspector and the Governor went over the railway bridge, stopping to search the island half-way over. The Governor remained on the bridge while the Inspector went over the island, and had not been long alone when he observed two men crawling through the grass on the further side of the river, among the wood piles.

In response to the Governor’ss whistle, Inspector Joliet ran up and went to the end of the bridge, from where he too saw the men, now running, and recognizing them by their overalls and straw hats as the escaped convicts for whom he was searching. He gave chase and the men made for Creighton street, running along Dufferin road, Mackay street and Vaughan street.

The Inspector, in hot pursuit, stopped Malette’s delivery auto and requested the driver, Marion, to turn and assist in heading off the criminals which he did. The fugitives, however, caught sight of the car through a gap in the streets, and, doubled back in their tracks, they leaped over a fence just as the auto came round the corner. Swinging back round the block, the driver of the car put on a spurt and came within a hundred yards or so of the fugitives as they raced up Electric ave. Here the Inspector jumped from the car and pulling out a revolver shouted to the ‘men’ to stop.

Fired at Fugitives. They refused to do so, however, so the inspector fired a couple of shots to frighten them, at which, Belisle flung himself down behind a bush, while Gagnon continued his flight. The former was easily captured and held by Inspector Joliet until Detective Downey came along with the car.

In the meantime, Gagnon had sought shelter in the bush which extends from Dufferin road to Government House, so the two police officers took up their stations at different ends of this. A number of boys had by then gathered in the neighborhood, having been attracted by the shots, and four of them, Albert Mandock, Norman Cody, John Hask and Walter Schroeder, were asked by the Inspector to beat through the bush and to whistle if they saw anybody.

Gagnon was by this means quickly shifted from his hiding place, and bursting out of the bush he made over a nearby fence quickly followed by the Inspector. Seeing, however, that his chance of getting away was now very slim, Gagnon suddenly turned and surrendered himself to his pursuer. In a few moments he joined his companion in the auto with Detective Downey and the whole party proceeded back to the jail, where the venturesome convicts were placed safely under lock and key. [Belisle died less than a year later in the hospital at Kingston Penitentiary, according to several other prisoners his end hastened by the neglect and laziness of the Hospital Officer]

Art F City: We Went to the LES: Solo Shows of Chris Burden and Patricia Treib

Michael: In the belly of the beast that was Frieze Week, I met up with Patricia Margarita Hernandez, Gallery Director/Assistant Curator of P! to check out some openings in the gallery’s neighborhood. We ended up at two solo shows: Chris Burden at Shin Gallery and Patricia Treib at Bureau.

I liked both of them a lot more than she did. Below, we talk nerdy masculinity, whether abstract paintings have content beyond “decor”, weird curating, and bad lighting.

Chris Burden: Hobby Shop

Shin Gallery 322 Grand St. May 3 – Jun 18, 2017 What’s On View: Two Chris Burden model-like sculptures, “Warship” (1981), and “Tower of London Bridge,” (2003) alongside 1975 concept car sketches. “Warship” looks like an aircraft carrier assembled from junk suspended from the ceiling, floating over a wunderkammer of “guy toys”—matchbox cars, a wartime gas mask, and other military accoutrements. 

Michael: This is some of the smartest curation I’ve seen in Shin Gallery’s main exhibition space. In the past, I’ve been impressed with their installations in the project space, but their showroom has been a bit uneven. Regardless, Shin brings a certain enthusiasm to their shows that’s sometimes lacking in the commercial gallery circuit, and for that I always look forward to seeing what they’re showing and how.

It seems like they hit their stride here. Hobby Shop has precious few pieces from the late Chris Burden, but they tell a cohesive story—despite spanning nearly 30 years. The goofy 1975 concept sketches for “B-Car” aren’t really anything to write home about (they look like a tween’s Logan’s Run fan art) but point to Burden’s obsession with engineering that binds the show together. His 70’s output is mostly known for masochistic, thrill-seeking performances and these might point to the nerdier side of masculinity?

I like seeing this tween-boy sense of play carry through to “Tower of London Bridge” decades later (built with an “erector” set… LOL). Burden’s father was an engineer, and it’s kinda touching to think the artist spent the later decades of his life working through that legacy. I’m thinking of his “Twin Quasi-Legal Skyscrapers” on the roof of the New Museum as the end of a process that began with those humble car sketches. There was something satisfying about knowing that was one of his last major projects and then seeing the “Build A Skyscraper” model kit embedded in the bowels of his 1981 “Warship”. Decades later, that ambition came true. 

Patti: The first thing that stands out to me is your use of the word showroom. It is such an appropriate word for a strictly commercial gallery. I imagine using “showroom” in conversation with Gavin Brown about the gallery and i’m sure he would not be pleased. I am curious what you mean by “a certain enthusiasm” that Shin Gallery has that other galleries don’t?

Michael: Well, they commit really fully to whacky, impractical presentation concepts. [Full disclosure: my niece used to work at Shin Gallery]. They often do installs that don’t make a lot of sense from a strictly commercial model or even a conventional curatorial mindset—once they hung a single Baldessari in the gallery and surrounded it with a ball pit. Another time they created this bizarre installation of a fictional studio shared by Sigmar Polke and Martin Kippenberger in their project space, complete with 1980s West German newspapers and cigarette butts on the floor. Last summer, they turned it into a mini CBGBs (including graffiti-ed urinals) and invited punk bands to play all day. My personal favorite install was a pop-up massage parlor to show Nobuyoshi Araki’s fetish Polaroids, which were displayed under a plexiglass floor so you actually had to walk on them to see the whole show. It was so convincing in its detail that drunk bros apparently kept stumbling in looking for a “happy ending”.

I’m literally always surprised (for better or for worse) by whatever the hell happens there, and that’s something I appreciate more than anything. This unconventional thinking might come from the fact that the owner was a collector before a gallerist, and seems to make decisions based on personal interests and impulses rather than an audience or client’s expectations. I respect that. Somehow all the theatricality feels like more than marketing spectacle—it’s fanboy devotion. You get the vibe that this is someone who truly loves art in a very weird way and wants people to have fun with it rather than see it end up accruing value in a storage locker next to the Luxembourg airport. It’s more than just a business, it’s a passion project, which is more than I can say about most soulless secondary market outlets.

Patti: I don’t believe art is ever removed from the market. Sometimes I just see it as a business like any other.

Michael: Well, yeah! But it’s also the most illogical market, and I kind of love that. What other kind of retail venture places four objects—two shitty pencil drawings of sci fi cars and two models literally made from children’s toys—in a ridiculously high-rent storefront space and gives people drinks in exchange for looking at them?

Patti: I’m not sure what to say about these works. If I hadn’t have know they were the work of Chris Burden, I would have completely dismissed them. Not to mention the hang did them no justice and the lighting was totally wrong. Then the swastika patch threw me off and I couldn’t help but imagine some hoarder in the woods putting these together. We were also drinking hot beer. LOL. In the context of knowing Burden’s work from the 70s, these seemed to be working through other ideas. Like a task that one does to distract their mind as they process other things.

Michael: I love that obsessive recluse hoarder quality, which here doesn’t read like an affectation (somewhat of a cliché aesthetic to try on) but just feels like honest, playful nerdery. You’re so right about the lighting. It was underlit to the point of feeling like a candlelight vigil for Burden, which ran counterintuitive to the anti-precious nature of his work.

I didn’t read too much into the swastika—I think of that piece as a WWII battleship model with an absurd addition—but again, you’re right. It totally wouldn’t fly in 2017.

Patricia Treib: Interstices

Michael: Treib’s work is so lovely—a real crowd-pleaser. That’s evidenced by the opening being packed to the point that it was nearly impossible to see the paintings unless you were right in front of them, despite the fact that they were hung with generous spacing. That has it’s own rewards though, because Treib’s handling of paint is so calligraphic and fluid photography doesn’t do it justice—you want to see these up-close and personal.

Like the Burden, though, I got the impression you weren’t as into the show as I was? What’s not to love?

Patti: Well, for starters, the show’s press release! It begins:

“Treib’s canvases skirt the lyrical. She masses colors, one beside the next, so precisely that the subtle spaces or overlaps between them begin to feel physical, like a body’s close proximity or one falling away in absence.”

The tone of this got under my skin, in particular “skirt the lyrical.” That being said, Treib’s intentionally direct and expressive brushstrokes feel like she’s developed her own language. But this language is haunted by painting’s historical context. I can’t look at these without thinking of countless American abstract expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, or Shirley Jaffe.

Michael: Really? These are painterly, but I am not sure I would associate them with AbEx. There’s a deliberateness and “design” sense that feels less process-based and more evocative of the myriad modernisms before and after that era—maybe Jaffe’s later work. And I certainly don’t think of these as being about negative space or absence… what an odd press release!

It’s funny you should mention that press release and Treib’s “language”. Before we even saw this show, I’d been thinking a lot about how reliant on language abstract painting has always been. I wonder if Treib’s work is part of a mini-zeitgeist of painters working through that problem on some level? I’m thinking of the text-like qualities of Al Peters’ current show at The Painting Center—described with that overused phrase “non-objective painting”—and to a lesser extent RM Vaughan’s controversial review of Amy Feldman.

It seems Treib and these other painters are using forms that play with the idea of the glyph or allusions to alphabets—Feldman less successfully, granted. We saw Interstices with Sophia Park, who remarked “these remind me of illuminated manuscripts with all the letters removed”. Some areas struck me as fragments of Hebrew letters or Arabic and Western calligraphy. In an era where terrible, terrible text-based work is ubiquitous at art fairs, perhaps we like making/seeing shapes reminiscent of language without the presence of an obnoxious imperative phrase? We’re so programmed to read and think in text constantly, but (presently) so unaccustomed to enjoying it’s content. 

Patti: Honestly, I’m conflicted about painting in general. It has never really interested me beyond its formal qualities. I usually see it as a 2D design object that’s easier to sell than performance, sculpture, or video—something to coordinate with your home or office decor. As a curator, though, I’m drawn to paintings in group shows when they can dialogue with other media: providing tension, historical context, or existing as one aspect of an artist’s larger practice. Ulrike Müller’s work is a great example of that: incorporating performance, queer/feminist publishing, and textiles. 

Treib’s apparent interest here is only painting about painting, fitting snuggly in a canvas. She does falls into the mini-zeitgeist you are talking about, though. If I was a collector of White American women painters I would buy one.

Michael: Ha! If I could afford to be a collector of anyone, I would too. I’m a big painting fan though.

Patti: To be fair, seeing this during the opening probably reinforced my association of this work with decor. Like you said, there were so many people that the artwork became just a backdrop to a social gathering. My first impulse was to be completely dismissive, yet in retrospect I was taken by the formal qualities: the size of the canvases, color choice, the way the shapes relate to each other, the brush strokes. Her mark-making is bold and calming at the same time.

Michael: Ha! If Patti Hernandez admits to kinda liking a painter, they must be doing something right!

If the walls of the Fender Guitars Custom Shop could talk, it would tell stories about ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons stopping by to hang out with a case of Dad’s Root Beer, or Merle Haggard scurrying to put on a sports coat to impress the “Vice President of Fender Guitars,” only to be greeted by master builder John Page in a “denim shirt and shorts.” Oh, and there was that time master builder Michael Stevens was cursing Eric Clapton’s name when the Guitar God rejected three of his neck designs for a new signature guitar model after his famed Stratocaster, “Blackie,” wore out.

“I went ballistic. I was so mad I ready to kill Clapton,” Stevens tells Billboard. “I stormed into Dan Smith’s office and said, ‘get that SOB over here. I have never been turned down three times for anything in my life. I’m not getting the right information.  What is going on?” I was mad.”

Stevens’ determination to get the job done right made it to the proper channels and Clapton’s guitar tech, Lee Dickson, hand delivered the prototype to get the job done: THE Blackie. The Texas luthier was instructed: “this is what we want.”

“I took it home with me, and when I brought it to Fender. It went in my office and I locked the door, and at night it was under my bed and I had my pistol under my pillow,” he says. “Nobody was getting Blackie from me without a fight. That was just too cool a guitar. One of the guitars that all of us guys in the world heard about, thought about, dreamed about, and here I’ve got it. “

Finally, Stevens came up with the right prototypes, which were eventually auctioned at Christie’s. This attention to detail and work ethos is exemplified in a new documentary, Fender Custom Shop: Founders Design 30th Anniversary, premiering at today (March 1) on Fenders’ YouTube channel. The film–set inside the “dream factory,” a “nirvana for guitar geeks”– reunites eight original master builders dedicated to creating legendary instruments, including Stevens, Page, George Blanda, Fred Stuart, J.W. Black, Mark Kendrick, Alan Hamel and Gene Baker. Located in Corona, California, the builders crafted custom guitars for everyone from Clapton, Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughn to Richie Sambora, Sting, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Courtney Love, Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck and Buck Owens.

The original eight master builders returned to the shop to design and create eight new Founders Design guitars, with only 30 units of each to be produced and released on a monthly basis throughout the remainder of 2017. Each designer was told they could create a unique design for the Custom Shop to build, each in their own style-and “the sky is the limit,” Mike Lewis, Vice President of Product Development, tells Billboard.

On March 14, Fender will roll out a special edition Michael Steven’s Founders design— a single back Esquire, an homage to the double backed white/blonde colored telecaster/stratocaster he originally created in the shop. Page created a Double F-Hole Thinline Esquire, which he dubs the “Page-O-Caster,” Blanda offers a Jazzcaster, Hamel created a Sparkle Telecaster, Stuart  went with a Herringbone Telecaster, while Black and Kendrick designed individual Stratocasters that show of their individual artistry. Each guitar will be released monthly through October.

“Each of these founding master builders came up with these amazing designs that are unmistakable in their own style. If you are a guitar fan and up on the Custom Shop history, you can look at these designs and know who designed it, just like a Monet or a Picasso… you would recognize the style,” Lewis says. “That is the level of these designers and the mark that they made on guitar history and guitar design over the last thirty years, specifically in the early days of the custom shop. That is the most exciting part-inviting them back. It was a real reunion for everybody. These are the guys that started it all for the custom Shop and cemented our image of what we do. There is no job too big or too small for us.”

The documentary tells the story of the origins of the Custom Shop, when Michael Stevens was hired by Fender CEO Bill Schultz in an effort to rescue Fender’s image from the stench of prior owner, CBS. Stevens handpicked Page, a Fender employee, to be his right hand man to carry out the vision. The story–told through archival footage–tells the story as told through photos and present day interviews with each builder.

“I started on the floor, buffing necks in the factory. That was in the late ’70s. I went into research and development within a few months of that and became the guitar designer in my early twenties, 23, I think,” Page says. “So I had been at Fender for nine years before we actually started the custom shop. We had talked about it for many, many years, because we used to build artists’ guitars in research and development, as well.”

While Page worked with Elliot Easton of The Cars, The Go-Go’s, and Frank Zappa, the guitar maker didn’t have a shop, “per se,” he says. Page was mentored by Freddy Tavares, who showed him how to sand a guitar, tack a piece of paper against the wood with “two lines traced on it,” and create a Stratocaster. He even took Page and other employees out to lunch with Leo Fender. It was this knowledge that earned Page his place next to Stevens in the shop — but the orders were coming in fast and furious. They needed more manpower.

“Once the popularity really hit, and not just the popularity, just the reality of business, and the numbers started to be demanded. That was tough,” Page says. “So Mike concentrated on a couple of one-offs that he was building them, and I was trying to run the semi-custom production. And that’s when I started to meet guys on the line that helped me get through it. Guys like Fred Stuart, who became one of our next master builders. Where I would do everything I could do at the wood side, get it through paint, and then take them to Freddie and let him set it up, because I had too many other things to do.”

“So, that’s how we started to find these other great talents in the Fender factory was by that demand. And it is a challenge, you know, when you’re trying to create art pieces and do production as well,” Page adds. “But that’s where the commitment of the people came in. And as the years went by, and we’re freaking out, trying to be a good business, and so we’d spend the night there. And we’d do everything we could to make sure that we made the month, financially, like we had to. That was all the commitment of the people. That’s where, you know, like when you say, ‘What makes the perfect Fender guitar?’ I circle back to that, because without that commitment of all the people that I was working with, it wouldn’t have happened. We had a crew like none other. And that kept the trueness to the art as well. So we could do the numbers and keep the art. And it was only through that team and commitment to it. So, I don’t know how to say it more than that, you know? Just the best group of guys I ever had. Wonderful people.”

Stevens — who is interviewed from his ranch in the documentary — says he hopes the short film gives viewers an idea of the camaraderie of the builders in the shop. Photographer Henry Diltz — who shot iconic album covers for The Eagles, The Doors and more — was also brought in by Fender to take pictures of the builders and their Founder Designs.

“It was quite rewarding, with lots of good memories, funny stories. I was there a short time-four years,” he says. “It surpassed everything we were trying to do back then. We were there early, we had a good time.  I liked George’s comment in the film — it was like Animal House. It was goofy. But we were all good friends. There were pranks, but a lot of hard work, long hours and camaraderie. And the guys in the factory looked down on us and called us leisure world (laughs). That was us! ”

He added that he is impressed with the work the new builders in the shop are working on today. “It’s like watching your kid grow up,” he says. “Some of the guys they have now, I can’t do that stuff. “

“We pulled it off,” says Page. “Here it is 30 years later, and the shop’s still alive and booming, and more successful than ever. So all those early efforts paid off.”
