Things I dont understand on dwtwt
Chris and Jodie killed the show… But did they? Disney+ decided to sink a bunch of money into it and its now expanding and becoming a Whoniverse.
If this was any other show people would be talking about how well it must have done for studios like Disney and the BBC wanting to pour more money into it and expand the universe. Studios don’t put money into dead properties. Half the time they wont put money into a show that is critically well received so I don’t see why they would put money into a show that was ‘killed’. Do people not understand the definition of killed?
People are constantly talking about the lost of viewer numbers, usually in the over night viewing figures, never addressing the fact that the way we view content now vs 2018 is extremely different. There are so many more streaming services now then there were in 2018 and there has been a heavy shift to streaming because of the amount of content offered vs broadcast TV. And of course we also went through a global pandemic that had everyone locked in there homes moving even more people to streaming especially an older generation.
This meant, not only did people not have to watch the show when it aired because it was easier to catch up later, but people had access to more choice over all.
Next… when quoting the viewer numbers they also don’t discuss where Doctor Who sits in most watch show of the day/week/month, which is often similar to other series. All broadcast TV has had overnight viewership go down due to there being more choice since streaming took off. No one is saying other shows are dying because viewer figures are down because they aren’t, the landscape has just change and so the measure of success has changed.
Also comparing Doctor Who in 2022 when there is countless other content to watch vs 2008 when there may have been 5-10 channels is comparing apples to oranges. [side note: Someone noted there was definitely more then 10 channels in 2008, I’m in the land down under so our free to airs channels are/were 7, 9, 10, SBS and ABC, there was/is second versions of these channels who played the content a set amount of time after it air on the original channel. It would make since the UK had/has move channels then us as it’s a larger media landscape.]
The other thing I also hear a lot is that merchandise sales went down dramatically… I have never seen a source for this but if we take it on face value as a truth, could it be because again there was a GLOBAL PANDEMIC… a lot of countries went into recession, lots of people lost their employment and therefore their income, lots of people were dealing with being sick and death, and we have had massive world wide supply chain issues with everything and it wouldn’t be surprising if a lot of the merchandise is made in countries like China that just completely shut down. So the last 3 years we have gone through a major shift in income, priority and supply which is only stabilising now.
And the annoying thing is the numbers will change and these same people will be like “oh yay the show was saved” not acknowledging we are no longer in the height of a global pandemic, employment has gotten better with places reopening and so earning disposable income and the fact that they are sinking way way way more money into Doctor Who so if it didn’t do better that would actually be a problem because when you sink more money in you have to make more money back.
Chris, Jodie, 13, Yaz, Thasmin and even the stories, none of it killed the show, even if there are people who don’t like it. Most regular viewers are probably not thinking about it so deeply, or on Twitter discussing their feelings. They are having 45min-1hour of fun with the Doc and her friends.
Anyway dwtwt is super confusing.
If you got to the end of reading this thanks for coming to my Doctor Who wasn’t killed Ted Talk 😂

Kim Taehyung Nakshatra
Kim Taehyung and his Nakshatra analysis.
I got this really cool request about Kim Taehyung and him potentially being a Vishaka rising, and I really wanted to analyze it. So here is what I came up with, hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoyed poking about.
Let me make it clear right off the bat, that since I’m not a professional astrologer, some things may not match up, further since we’re not super sure of his birth time, it’ll definitely affect the reading. What I can be sure of is that I’ll do my best and I’m completely open to constructive criticism from you all!
Now lets get on with some basic stuff, for those who have not yet read the post with Namjoon’s moon analysis, I’ll again reiterate some principles of Vedic astrology! In the scenario that you’re still confused with all this jargon, feel free to reach out and I’ll be more than happy to help you out.
Starting out, we have to note that while western astrology is usually more advisory in nature, Vedic astrology’s main purpose is to predict. Also, we usually go a sign back from western astrology in Vedic astrology, so according to that for example, if you’re a libra rising, you become a virgo rising in Vedic astrology and so on and so forth. All planets will also shift back a sign, so a Capricorn Mercury will become a Sagittarius Mercury.
Since this is the first ‘only nakshatra analysis’ concerned posts on this blog, ill pre-explain some other facets of Nakshatras too. For those of you who don’t understand it still, you can refer to my post dedicated to explaining what nakshataras are through the master-list.
Now a person may display qualities other than that of their ascendant nakshatra, or moon or sun, because sometimes people have stellium or maybe an exalted planet or maybe a really strong planet in another Nakshatra, or maybe a lone planet in a certain Nakshatra is aspecting the lagna or even a stellium, that would all alter the degree to which the nakshatra would individually affect the person. So for this analysis, we will check the ascendant only, and other than that, we’ll check any aspects and lastly the nakshatra lord, and the dispositers.
So for this reading, we’ve taken the birth time as 4:15am on 30th December 1995, and birthplace is set to daegu, south korea (even if this isn’t where he’s born, rest assured since south korea is fairly small, it wont matter much).
Now on with the actual reading part-
So his ascendant is at 29’37 degrees in libra in the Nakshatra of Vishaka, within the third quadrant, where quadrant ruler is Mercury through Gemini. Vishaka’s ruler jupiter is in the third house, conjunct sun and mars in sagittarius, (i.e mooltrikon for jupiter). Jupiter itself sits in mula nakshatra and within the second quadrant of this.
Now onto the really cool stuff, since this stuff is being introduced for the first time, i’ll create a proper post explaining it, post it before this so you guys can check that out too. So keep cross checking it, otherwise i'll have to add it before each Nakshatra analysis.
His nakshatra here is vishaka, misra in nature, caste is mlechh, guna is sattwic, gana is rakshasa, purpose is dharma, deities are Indra and Agni, element is fire, gender is female, animal is tiger, Nadi is kappha and sign is libra.
So now getting on with the actual interpretation of the Vedic jargon above is here-
Firstly, lets get started with the main Nakshatra here, Vishaka. This falls between libra and scorpio, with the first 3 quadrants in libra and the last one in scorpio. Vishaka is represented by two forked branches, reprinting the constant inner battle inside the natives. They may appear very orthodox at times, very stubborn and fixed in their views and traditions, however such people are also extremely progressive and accepting. Due to this weird polarization, some natives have extreme trouble putting forth their views on many subjects here, and tend to observe others for a long time before making up their minds about something. Since the sign is inherently ruled by fire, such people are extremely intense and intimidating to others and love being in the spotlight while being surrounded by loved ones. However due to this intense nature and love for the spotlight, these people have a hard time maintaining friendships. Jupiter is their ruling planet, and you can see that influence in them, too. They are some of the most unconventionally intelligent people you will meet. Add to that their beliefs of spirituality and non-violence, and you’ve got the perfect person, however They are prone to addictions like drugs and alcohol, and they are also overly self-conscious. Instead of enjoying what they have, they will always concentrate on what they lack, therefore being called ‘the star of purpose’, for they’re always searching for a new purpose.
It is often believed that the lover of lord Krishna, Radha was born under this nakshatra. Thus it is believed, such natives have immense charm and beauty, while being innately pure within. They have people falling for them one after another, but once they find someone or something they like, they’ll remain devoted to it. Such people have a ‘Je ne sais quoi’ about them, one can’t very well point it out, but something so magnetic is present. They’re often said to be in direct connect with the divine (lord Krishna was after all a god), and are blessed by god for good fortune.
The native of this nakshatra might be interested in astrology and art.The natives of this nakshatra are good-natured and likes fair-judgement. They have a interest in religion and love the religious rituals too. They speak softly and due to which they easily impress others. They usually don’t speak harshly. Due to the effect of Jupiter they are always ready to learn and teach others. They are ambitious and don’t believe in following the societal rules. They work hard to achieve their ambitions and due to which they receive success also. The natives are wealthy, powerful and have an impressive nature and therefore people get easily impressed by them. The person is compassionate and confluence of ethics, rites and good qualities in the person. Due to the combination of all these qualities the native becomes financially sound also. The native believes in saving money due to which they never face financial crisis. They can influence others with their word. However on the flip side, They like showing off and are a bit arrogant by nature. Vishakha nakshatra is the nakshatra of Jupiter, that is why they have a mild behavior. But they are short tempered also. According to their behavior they are always ready to fight with others. (see how jin and tae, and vmin always fight, in-fact he was named as one of the members most likely to pick a fight)
Something I found very interesting is how Taehyung’s ascendant falls in the 3rd pada or quadrant of Vishaka, which corresponds to the sound ‘Te’ as in pronunciation wise ‘Tae’, and being named taehyung is thus extremely auspicious for him. This is rare among people unaware of Vedic traditions, and no wonder it has worked so well for his fortune and luck.
Now Jupiter through vishaka Rules Lower Abdomen, Bladder parts, kidneys, pancreatic glands, Genitals, Rectum, Prostate Gland, Descending colon. Thus the natives are prone to nose bleeding, renal stone, dropsy, rupture, prostate enlargement, fibroid tumor, urinary trouble.
Now he’s born under the third quadrant. These natives are light-hearted and curious. They enjoy learning and acquiring knowledge on diverse topics. However they may be afflicted by anxiety and often struggle with conflicting emotions regarding work and love, material and spiritual realms and so much more (remember that gemini is two faced, and vishaka itself is branched). Since it falls under gemini, such people are social butterflies, amicable, smart and communicative.Due to their warm and altruistic personality, they can easily make friends with others. Their diversity of personal interests also helps them to form friendships with a wide variety of people. Thus they have no issue maintaining an active and vibrant social life. They are extremely wise for their age and have a natural insight into the workings of the world and of human nature. They are truthful and devout, and are naturally-inclined toward spirituality. They bring energy and enthusiasm to whatever tasks they undertake.
Now we’ll brush over the nakshatra lord quickly, and then move back into really fun nakshatra stuff.
Jupiter as ruler of vishaka is in the 3rd house, conjunct sun and mars, with no aspects. The natives are good planners (3rd house is short distant journeys). Besides, they are highly curious and enjoy making connections with others. They feel happy to share ideas. They are able to see the larger picture and often turn to others for advice and suggestions. Also, they easily put the people at ease in social situations and have higher mental capabilities. They can become intuitive as Jupiter will expand their mental power, so they can even grasp new information quickly and comprehend things effortlessly. The placement of Jupiter in the 3rd house will also help the natives in education. The natives are likely to excel in writing and literary fields( his degree is in communications and broadcasting I believe). Since this is also the house of younger siblings, people have great relationships with their siblings here.Since the 3rd house is also a upachaya sthana (house of growth) the native will have good growth of career and wealth, and with its aspect on the 7th house, marital bliss is also guaranteed. Aspects on the 11th and 9th houses promise a powerful social circle, and gains through foreign land as well as fame.
However, despite all these great results from sitting in its mooltrikon, Jupiter is still afflicted by sun and mars. Such people with age (upachaya house moves with age) speak less and less because they think twice before they speak and choose their words very carefully. With this conjunction of 3 masculine friendly planets thus when together in a house, makes people highly influential. The native tends to enjoy a good financial and social status. This conjunction is often found in the horoscope of influential and high-ranking individuals such as politicians. When Sun, Mars and Jupiter are housed together in a horoscope, the native earns a lot of wealth, fame, and respect in life. Such people live a prosperous life for the most part and do not have to work hard to make it big, as they have unpaid karma they receive in this lifetime. Moreover, these natives tend to be very loyal and straightforward.
Now onto dissecting the nakshatra even more, let's get into the characteristics of vishaka.
Being of Misra nature, they are of an extremely fiery temperament, are actually prone to being pyromaniacs too. I have noticed that such people also have great metabolisms. They are quiet in large crowds, and prefer one to one conversations and are also extremely philanthropic. Great organizers, extremely interested in art and technology, and absolutely brilliant at getting rid of bad habits (fire purifies).
Vishakha is a monstrous nakshatra. People in this group are generally intuitive, strong-willed, and assertive. They may be prone to anger and violence. However Libra natives possess excellent taste and good judgement. They are friendly, learned, and dignified, but may be prone to arrogance as persons born under the star of Vishakha have a wide sphere of influence. For this reason, they do well in social and political arenas. It is said that that the natives under vishaka have vyapana shakti, or the power to “Achieve and Make Manifest, Power to Achieve many and various Fruits of Life” (remember how he always talks to his angels?)
Now he’s a mleccha caste, which according to Vedic traditions means an outsider or an outcaste (as these people did not follow societal rules, or fit into the Vedic practices as they were of foreign origin). This could honestly be why we talk about his 4D personality, because of the caste. He has an unconventional way of doing things and thinking, which don’t fit into the broader spectrum due to this. Also we can see that it follows the dharma nakshatra, so he is inherently concerned with principles, morals, duty and finding his life’s purpose. This can make his very spiritually inclined and intuitive, also very restless and prone to depression. Now coming to his dosa of kaphha, (the Water quality). This makes a native very philosophical, calm and patient, sometimes so much so that other’s perceive them as lazy, and simply ‘lucky’. With his sattwa qualities here, with Jupiter, a rajas planet, he can often has a duality between rajas qualities with fiery temperament and passion for everything and then an extremely calm and cool quality of sattwa, where one is not concerned about the consequences of their actions and are concerned with being in the moment.
The yoni of the nakshatra is a male tiger (tae tae?). This means the natives have attributes similar to those of tigers.Tigers are handsome and powerful people with an innate self-confidence and elegance. There's a sense of immediacy and an aura of electricity that surrounds it, and when it walks into a room, it feels like something is about to happen. Once a tiger has found its groove, it will focus on its goal with a brightly burning intensity. In social situations, the tiger is an excellent host and there is no such thing as a casual party in its home. Guests can always expect a memorable occasion with an extravagance of food and drink, and yet, there is a distinct coldness to its den. Having sacrificed comfort for style, the tiger outfits its house with austere and modern furniture, and comfortably worn easy chairs are replaced every few years. But their emotional detachment should not be confused with a desire to avoid tenderness; for intimacy is the tiger's greatest sensual tool. Offering its lover some deeply held secrets adds another dimension to both platonic and romantic relationships for a tiger. They are fiercely independent and always on the move, so it can be quite hard to discern such people.
And lastly coming to the deities of the nakshatra, the two deities, Indra (Lord of Lightning) and Agni (Lord of Fire), are known to rule this nakshatra. Hence, Vishakha witnesses the relay of characteristics of both of these ruling deities. Since both of these deities exhibit some characteristics which are not in accordance with the other, Vishakha becomes a mixture of different kinds of characteristics. Lightening tends to have similar impact with the forcefulness of the light, and the destructive power to do what it sets out to do. The energy of Agni however, is more cleansing. Agni is the God which takes our oblations offered to the Gods to them. It is the energy that gives us the opportunity to cook food and nourish ourselves. It creates ashes from all that is offered making it pure and able to clean any impurities. The natives can have a lot to do with justice, social righteousness and causes. There could be a lot of intensity here especially to do the right thing and a lot of righteous principle because of these two deities.
Finally, a shortened version of Vedic tradition story associated with the nakshatra-
Indra, according to Vedic Mythology, is known to be very goal-oriented, and who is often insecure about losing his throne to someone else. In an attempt to keep his throne intact he commits many deeds that can be bad karmas according to Vedic Astrology. For example, Indra once tried to kill the pregnant wife of demon Hiranyakshipu in order to stop him from worshipping Lord Brahma and getting great powers as a result of his worship. Indra feared that Hiranyakshipu will gain powers and then attack the heavens and remove him from his throne and in order to save his throne he tried to disturb the worship of Hiranyakshipu by every possible means. Though he did not succeed due to the intervention of DevRishi (Sage) Naarad who was able to influence the higher Gods to stop Indra from committing such a heinous deed. This goal oriented nature of Indra is relayed through Vishakha and accordingly the natives under the strong influence of this nakshatra are very fixated on their goals and they are always in a danger of engaging in bad karmas in order to achieve their goals.
Indra is also known for his deep interests in drinking, women and enjoying other pleasures and these qualities of Indra are also relayed through this nakshatra and accordingly the natives under the strong influence of this nakshatra are likely to be fond of materialistic pleasures of all kinds. Agni on the other hand is seen as the ruling deity of Fire according to Vedic mythology and he is portrayed as the one with a good character. The influence of Agni on Vishakha brings sufficient energy to this nakshatra which can help the natives achieve their goals.
An incident is quoted in Vedic mythology where a demon prayed to god Agni to protect him and then after assurance from Agni, he started worshipping lord Brahma for gaining powers. Indra, seeing it as a threat to his power came to kill the demon but Agni who had promised the demon to save him, came in the way and fought Indra and prevented him from killing the demon. It should be noted that Agni fought with Indra in order to practice the right deeds despite the fact that Indra was his king. So the influence of Agni on this nakshatra brings positive qualities of Agni and how a particular native under the influence of Vishakha will behave is very much dependent on which of these two ruling deities is controlling Vishakha in his horoscope.
Anyway, this was my analysis of the nakshatra, hope you guys enjoyed it! Let me know about other stuff too, and ill be more than happy to help!

Brawl Royal History + System Forsaken brainrot of me me explaining how I restructured how the Brawl Royal worked starting from the original Forsaken fic, since I found the pieces that were left interesting but wanted to expand on it and change some things.
I basically decided that Brawl Royal started as an old mage guild. It was just an arena where mages could practice powerful spells without hurting civilians or destroying the environment, and they had mages who could revive on hand if someone gets hurt. Sometimes they would fight for fun and random people liked watching because they thought it was interesting, so they turned it into a business where people could pay to watch mages practice. This eventually turned into an actual broadcast like an official sport.
It also had living quarters. It's a stone structure in the ground so that powerful spells wont destroy it, and so they could build rooms underground and around so people can have rooms to stay at for as long as they want (it's come and go), and they had food and stuff which was normally sourced from the nearby town that had shopkeepers and farmers. Occasionally they'd make their own meat because they can.
When the APOCALYPSE HAPPENED it was one of the places not destroyed because the mages there could create a shield that protected the place from magic, + the place is BUILT literally for the very purpose of withstanding strong magic attacks. Anyone that survived, as well as families from villages that were still standing but were worried about when another attack would happen, relocated there since they knew it was a place of shelter and safety.
The Brawl Royal did not have enough resources to support this many people though, especially after the attack that destroyed the nearby villages that had their food sources. So,they started being creative
Things I know about the economy:
If you kill an animal and bring it to them, they will exchange you money for it
they will turn this animal into food which people can buy
They prioritize the families that cannot just go out and murder things first
there is BETTING and GAMBLING on the sports for who will win.
participants get free stuff/more privileges to encourage people to compete
sometimes if you kill enough things they enroll you anyways and as long as you don't throw a fit you stay enrolled
sometimes they leave ppl dead longer so they don't need to feed them
They plan on not reviving some of the people in the big contest b/c... idk... less mouths to feed... but it will be covered up and none of the participants are supposed to know that (Matt finds out though later on though)
"wow that turned from fine to pretty evil" don't give the people in charge of the mage murder ring that much power!!!! I'm sure they were fine once but the corrupt ones will aaaaalways make it to the top
Brawl Royal also makes potions. it's not nearly as much of a thing, and they're pretty expensive but competitors can buy them to increase strength if they want (like normal game attack-ups and stuff).
they're pretty experimental so they only really sell the 'old recipe' ones. But they do make their own to try and see what else they can doooooo hmmmmmmmmmm
competitors they don't consider valuable sometimes they will give the experimental potions to see what happens and sometimes they die or don't come out the sameeeee but they don't tell ppl about the potions so people just think its something wrong with the revive spell...
Effects of this:
If audiences thought people died due to revive spell failure, the might go 😱 because suddenly their fatal sport that they were ok with because it wasn't actually fatal is fatal now
Audiences will not find out. Competitors drop out or leave all the time, so why would anyone assume foul play?
They are not on screen enough for people to really go "hmm there was a personality change there"
Only the competitors would notice b/c they often train with them and would notice if someone is missing or started acting weird, but would be fed similar stuff like "oh they left" and if they're acting weird they're usually isolated or kicked out
(this section about potions is just supposed to be background to explain what happened to Matt)
#Forsaken#quo rambles#yeah im not even sure I am going to have any other serious tags this is just me jotting stuff down orginized lol

You won’t want to miss the Gerrit Cole, Jacob deGrom show
Record these dates on your mobile phone’s calendar right now: July 7, 8, 28 and 29.
And, if you’re feeling ambitious, Oct. 20.
The first four mark the Subway Series, your scheduled opportunities to see whether the baseball calendar gods allow Jacob deGrom and Gerrit Cole, our city’s two aces, to face off for the first time in their careers.
And if those don’t align, would you settle for World Series Game 1?
“I think in an era where we see increasing usage in breaking stuff, they still pitch off their fastballs. They still have dominant fastballs, and they have that element of power that to me, puts fannies in the seats,” YES Network broadcaster David Cone, an ace of his time, said recently of deGrom and Cole. “If you’re a fan, you’re looking at the days they pitch, and you’re going to buy a ticket and go watch them.
“To me, that kind of draw in New York is something that really plays big.”
It feels big, too, doesn’t it? The Mets and Yankees are all in for 2020, and their No. 1 starters arguably best symbolize that mindset. The 31-year-old deGrom would be preparing for his walk year right now if he and the Mets hadn’t agreed, in March 2019, to a five-year, $137.5 million extension that takes him through 2023 (with an opt-out after 2022 and a team option for 2024). DeGrom immediately rewarded the Mets’ faith in him by winning a second straight National League Cy Young Award.
Jacob deGromAnthony J Causi
The Yankees, meanwhile, committed a record-setting, nine-year, $324 million contract in December to the 29-year-old free agent Cole, who placed second behind his Astros teammate Justin Verlander in last year’s American League Cy Young vote. That completed a pursuit that lasted more than a decade — with the Yankees selecting Cole in the first round of the 2008 amateur draft, only to see him choose UCLA over them.
At a time when openers and bullpenning have turned as common as a New York City parking ticket, deGrom and Cole stand out as horses (Cole’s 212 ¹/₃ regular-season innings last year ranked fourth and deGrom’s 204 were 10th) and blazers (Cole’s average fastball of 97.2 mph ranked second and deGrom’s 96.9 was third, among qualified pitchers, as per FanGraphs). Yet you need only eyeball them to appreciate their differences — that more than one way exists to skin an opponent.
Cole, at a listed 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, carries the more traditional pitcher’s build.
“In terms of more like a Roger Clemens-type,” Cone agreed, citing his former Yankees teammate. “Power body.”
Like Clemens, Cole has adjusted his repertoire with time. After a superb 2015 season with the Pirates, which placed him fourth in that season’s NL Cy Young vote, Cole dropped closer to league-average performances the subsequent two campaigns.
When the Astros acquired him from the Pirates for 2018, they urged him to throw his four-seam fastball less often in favor of his curveball and slider. And when he used the four-seamer, the Astros helped him generate more spin on it (through legal means, Cole has repeatedly insisted). These changes propelled him to his highest perch and hugest dollars.
“Great pitcher,” deGrom said of Cole. “The guy goes out there with really good stuff and competes. [He’s] fun to watch when you see him throw, and very impressive.”
The Mets’ ace added Cole’s contract was “well-deserved.”
Last season, Cole placed fifth in baseball with 97.1 percent “active spin” on his fastball (that’s the percentage of spin that contributes to the pitch’s movement) and second with 97.5 percent active spin on his changeup, as per MLB.com.
“I think stuff-wise, he’s able to create a lot of different shapes and different speeds in different zones that is not really predictable in the way he goes about it,” Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said of Cole. “So he understands his strengths, and he understands what hitters are trying to do to him. He’s able to make adjustments because of how centered he is in his delivery.”
You can’t discuss Cole’s greatness, it appears, without invoking his intellectual buy-in.
Said Blake: “I think his focus on the things he can control at a really high level, like his intensity and detail that he gets to from day to day, doesn’t allow him to get too far away from center. He’s really in tune with his body, and that allows him to make really fine adjustments. Outside of the pure stuff, there’s a really high level of awareness for himself and the process to get himself to the highest version of him.
“I think his ability to make adjustments from pitch to pitch and throw to throw, just his level of detail in catch play, just doesn’t allow him to get too far from center, which is really critical.”
Like Cole, DeGrom stands at 6-4 … but he weighs in at 180 pounds. There’s no hiding from his college shortstop past. Why would he? It helps explain his effectiveness.
Gerrit ColeCharles Wenzelberg/New York Post
“DeGrom is deceptively athletic and very wiry, for lack of a better expression,” Cone said. “To me, the fluidity of deGrom through the release point generates so much speed. It’s almost imperceptible, unless you slow it down in slow motion, how much arm speed he generates. It’s pretty impressive, I think, and that shows his athleticism.”
He relies more on his slider than does Cole, throwing it 32 percent of the time, and deGrom throws a very effective changeup as well.
“His command of the extension side of the plate, I think, is something everybody admires,” Cole said of deGrom. “He’s constantly on the corner all day long. His location is top notch. His quality of spin and pitch deception is top notch. He’s been fun to watch for a long time. And he can hit.”
Interestingly, deGrom doesn’t rank anywhere near the league leaders when it comes to spin rates. He may have quality of spin, but not quantity. It doesn’t prevent him from being elite because: “He throws from a little bit lower slot, and the ball jumps on guys,” Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner explained. “And he uses that to his advantage.”
If deGrom doesn’t come across as being as garrulous or curious as Cole, he can go as deep intellectually as he did on his three career homers.
Added Hefner: “Jake’s one of the most focused individuals I’ve ever been around. … Very driven, knows what he wants. And he goes out and gets it.”
The best way to compare and contrast the two studs, naturally, would be to have them go head-to-head for the first time and beyond.
“If [he and I] have a chance to face up against each other, I think it will be a lot of fun,” deGrom said.
Keep those dates open. For now, ride the spring-training optimism and keep the entire week of the Fall Classic open. This is one party, one pitching clinic, you wouldn’t want to miss, and the buildup to it might be even better.

Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
What is the web-o-sphere angry about this week? The conscious coupling of a comedian and pop princess, a Harry Potter casting choice and a Kardashian sister who could be working undercover for the dairy industry Here’s everything you need to know.
Pete Davidson says some weird things about Ariana Grande
THE STORY: During a radio interview with Howard Stern, SNL cast-member Pete Davidson made a series of comments and jokes about his fiancé, Ariana Grande, that have people asking questions. For starters, he said he’s “never been prouder” than when he watched former U.S. President Bill Clinton seemingly “eyeing” Grande at Aretha Franklin’s funeral last month. And, later in the interview when asked about how he deals with his fiancé being objectified by men on the regular, he said: “I get it. I was jerking off to her before I met her! I’ve been in the other shoes. Who knew I was practicing this whole time [for our relationship.]?”
And wait! That’s not all. In another interview sound bit that the media quickly picked up on, Davidson appears to express sympathy Bishop Charles E. Ellis III, who was accused of inappropriately touching Grande during a live television broadcast. “Shitty situation…” he said, “I feel bad for that guy.”
THE REACTION:

pete davidson is publicly encouraging toxic male behaviour towards his own fiancé, you should not defend any man who inappropriately touches anyone and it’s certainly not a compliment to be “eyed up” there’s something seriously wrong with him
— t (@louvinglyharry) September 27, 2018
Pete Davidson is DISGUSTING. Don’t try to tell me otherwise. I don’t care if he “makes ariana happy”, he treats her with no respect publicly and I don’t see him ever complimenting her for anything but her “sexiness” :( (Don’t even try to comment and attack me, it wont work)
— mark 💧 (@remcamiIa) September 27, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Man, Ariana Grande has had a rough year. Shortly after Davidson’s interview went viral, Grande tweeted a string of emotional messages, including: “can i pls have one okay day. just one. pls.” and “ty for loving me sm i do not deserve it.”
Is she addressing her fan’s Davidson backlash? We don’t know—and it’s probably not our business. What we do know is that Davidson is a brutally honest dude whose made a career out making uncomfortable, often-inappropriate jokes. I think Grande probably knew that before accepting his proposal. We also know that a lot these quotes were taken pretty out of context. For example, here’s everything Davidson said about the whole bishop situation: “It’s not cool and I feel really bad. We both don’t think that was intentional. He’s a really tall guy, she’s very little. He was trying to be funny. He did a stupid joke, he’s a pastor. He did a shitty joke, broadcast it on TV. Shitty situation…I feel bad for that guy.”
An Asian actress Claudia Kim plays Nagini in Fantastic Beasts
THE STORY: The final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald, the latest film from J.K Rowling’s extended Harry Potter universe, revealed that the character played by Claudia Kim is actually Nagini, a cursed woman who eventually transforms into Voldemort’s killer snake later in the Harry Potter series.
THE REACTION:
I feel like this is the problem when white people want to diversify and don't actually ask POC how to do so. They don't make the connection between making Nagini an Asian woman who later on is the pet of a white man. So I'm going to say it right now. That shit is racist.
— Ellen "Call Me General" Oh (@ElloEllenOh) September 25, 2018
issue isn't that nagini's a villain, but that she's barely a character at all. presumably enslaved, as humanoid pet & before as circus act, but w/no redemption arc as her death in DH is a fun victory for Good. & nagini is SE Asian iconography used as EAsian snake/dragon lady🙄
— ryen 🦇 (@RyeriLim) September 26, 2018
@jk_rowling listen Joanne, we get it, you didn't include enough representation when you wrote the books. But suddenly making Nagini into a Korean woman is garbage. Representation as an afterthought for more woke points is not good representation. https://t.co/UIrR7yiKQD
— Jen Moulton (@J_A_Moulton) September 26, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Since The Philosopher’s Stone, there problem with diversity and racial stereotyping in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. And in recent years, as the wizarding world continues to hold a powerful place in popular culture, it feels like the author has made attempts to rectify her lack of representation. (For example, a black actress was cast to play Hermione in the stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a decision that was both praised and criticized.)
It appears that this backtracked diversity is exactly what has been done with Nagini. The criticism that casting an Asian actress as a pet snake feeds into the fetishisation of East Asian women is valid. But on the flip side, writer Biba Kang points out that “had a Caucasian actor been cast in the role, you could imagine that journalists like me would be writing censorious pieces about white-washing and the cultural appropriation of Asian mythology.” She then points out the backlash against Tilda Swinton playing the Ancient One in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, despite the director’s argument that using an Asian actor would contribute to a racist stereotype.
Here’s what Rowling has to say about all of it: “The Naga are snake-like mythical creatures of Indonesian mythology, hence the name Nagini” and “Indonesia comprises a few hundred ethnic groups, including Javanese, Chinese and Betawi.” Is that a mic drop? Hard to say. I’m most interested in hearing from Claudia Kim, the actress who plays Nakini in the film, and who seems very excited about her role in the franchise.
There’s a Kylie Jenner cereal conspiracy
THE STORY: Kylie Jenner, Realizer of Things™, has come to a revelation. On September 18, 2018, Kylie Jenner tweeted: “last night i had cereal with milk for the first time. life changing.” At this point, the Internet pretty much lost it, and Jenner clarified: “i always liked my cereal dry i never bothered to put milk.” (Kris Jenner later confirmed this key information about her daughter to E! News, saying she’s to blame for Kylie’s strange habit: “It’s all my fault. Guilty as charged. I let the kid eat dry cereal and I think it just kind of stuck with her.”)
THE REACTION:
Kylie Jenner LIED to us! She has had cereal with Milk! pic.twitter.com/BM6R9v6zrp
— Natalia11 (@Natalia11) September 20, 2018
The dairy industry have clearly paid kylie to promote their products as more an more people are becoming aware how bad dairy actually is for you, the same with Kim when she took pictures drinking out the bottle 👀👀
— 💎charlea (@chardunbar_xx) September 23, 2018
Kylie Jenner is working for the milk industry and tweeted that shit last night cause milk stocks been going down since people been drinking dairy alternatives. STAY WOKE
— Titty Milk (@TYB_Johnny) September 20, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: She’s a liar AND she’s working undercover for the diary industry?! There’s a lot of garbage going on in the world right, and I really don’t think there’s anything wrong creating an unlikely celebrity conspiracy theory to distract from the madness. Oh, and Kylie, if you’re reading this, you owe us the truth!!!

Can we just shut up about women’s voices?
What has the vocal fry outcry done to us?
Image: vicky leta / mashable
"If you say 'like' one more time, I'm gonna lose my shit."
These were the words uttered to me through gritted teeth as I sat in green plastic patio furniture on a humid summer night a few years back. The words dried on my tongue; I lost my train of thought. Moments before, I'd been embroiled in a heated debate about millennials and social media, as was my wont. My opponent was an older male journalist and, though he objected to the central thesis of my argument, he chose not to engage with my salient points. Instead he opted to attack something intensely personal: the way I speak.
I came away from that interaction feeling a level of anger that I couldn't quite put into words. I felt ridiculed, undermined, and — worst of all — newly self-conscious about a vocal tick of which I'd been erstwhile blissfully unaware.
I'm not alone. Women are criticised every day for the way they speak. And since terms like upspeak and vocal fry first entered the popular lexicon a few years ago, it's only gotten worse. The buzzwords — which once described non-gender-specific speech patterns — have become yet another weapon used to silence women who dare to voice opinions.
SEE ALSO: YouTube's women of STEM make learning about science fun
They are "easy ways to tell women to shut up," says Jessica Bennett — gender editor at The New York Times and author of Feminist Fight Club.
Women are constantly being told that their voices sound too high-pitched, too "Valley Girl," too shrill. Women are told they apologise too much, that they use too many discourse markers — "like," "ya know," "I mean"— and that they're exhibiting vocal fry and upspeak. Vocal fry means dropping your voice to its lowest natural register, which makes your vocal folds vibrate to produce a creaking sound. Upspeak or uptalk denotes ending a sentence with a rising-pitch intonation, which can sound like you're asking a question.
Once we had the words to define the perceived problem, critics couldn't stop using them to belittle women. But the kicker is, in some cases, these behaviours are just as prevalent in men.
Women in broadcasting frequently find themselves on the receiving end of invective about the way they speak.
After a recent radio interview,Bennett received a tweet from a man telling her to "stop with the vocal fry."
Annie Oh, a host of the Who The F**k Is Gossip Girl podcast, which aims to help a guy who's never seen the drama understand its many scandals years after it went off air, was criticised for her use of the word "like" in an email from a listener. Oh says reading that email for the first time was "shitty," particularly as half of the "essay-long" missive was dedicated to decrying how she speaks.
"Considering it's a free podcast, not advertised, this person went out of their way to find and listen to our podcast," she says. "Dude, you can just stop listening to it."
In an episode of This American Life (TAL), host Ira Glass addressed the emails being sent to the show's female members of staff — they're "some of the angriest emails" the show gets. Glass read aloud one email that referred to Chana Joffe-Walt's purported vocal fry: "The voice of Chana Joffe-Walt is just too much to bear and I turn off any episode she's on." Some of the words used to describe the voices of TAL's female employees: "unbearable," "annoyingly adolescent," "beyond annoying," "excruciating," "detracts from the credibility of the journalist."
When journalist Jessica Grose was co-hosting Slate's DoubleX Gabfest podcast, she also received emails criticising her for her upspeak. She was told she sounded like "a Valley Girl and a faux socialite," and one interviewee said she "sounded like his granddaughter."
Women face a "double bind" when it comes to their voices, Bennett says. "Because our natural style of speech, which tends to be more flexible, experimental, and higher pitched, is not the style of speech that is typically associated with leadership," says Bennett. "In fact, research has found that it's perceived as insecure, less competent, and sometimes even less trustworthy."
Because of this, women employ tactics like vocal fry to make their voices sound deeper and more like those traditionally associated with leadership.
"So in effect, we’re combatting the inflection by trying to deepen our voices, but then arriving at a vocal fry register. Can’t win, right?" writes Bennett in Feminist Fight Club. In a nutshell, you're damned if you do sound like a woman, and, well, you're damned if you don't.
"Men do many of these things just as much (if not more) than women, but it’s women whose voices are constantly being policed."
The internet is littered with utility posts instructing women how they can ditch these speech patterns to sound more professional, more confident, more capable.
But the same isn't true for men.
"Men do many of these things just as much (if not more) than women, but it’s women whose voices are constantly being policed," Erez Levon, reader in sociolinguistics at Queen Mary University of London, told Mashable. Not only have men been the biggest exhibitors of vocal fry, the speech affect was actually started by men, as Levon points out: "Vocal fry was actually associated with men’s speech, and particularly posh men (if you listen to upper-class British men speaking, you’ll hear it all over the place)."
So, if men exhibit vocal fry too, why aren't they getting any stick for it? NYU linguistics professor Lisa Davidson, says because men's voices tend to be lower in pitch, it's harder to discern when they're exhibiting vocal fry. Because women's voices tend to be higher, "it’s really noticeable when a woman is changing from her normal voice to creaky voice, because of the pitch change."
Uptalk is no different. A 2013 study busted the myth that this speech trend is exclusive to young women. "Men don’t think they do it, but they do," said Amanda Ritchart, co-author of the project, said at the time. In a 2016 paper published in the Journal of Sociolinguistics, Levon found that both women and men in London exhibit uptalk, with men using it slightly more than women. He also noted that upspeak is more often employed by young white speakers in London — "older people and black and Asian speakers in London don’t really use uptalk nearly as much."
When it comes to filler words, researchers are divided. An analysis of the gender differences in use of discourse markers in televised interviews found that women did not use these words more frequently than men in their speech. But a study of 200 people by the University of Texas found that female speakers were more likely to use the discourse marker "like."
Levon says these behaviours aren't gender specific, but rather "generation specific." He says the emergence of vocal fry and uptalk over the past two decades can be linked to "changes in the structures of society," and "women’s greater access to the labour market." As society has changed over the years, so too have women's voices. A study by the University of South Australia compared archival recordings of women's voices taken in 1945 with recordings made in the 1990s. It was found that the "fundamental frequency" of women's voices "dropped by 23 Hz" over 50 years. Per the BBC, researchers suspect the significant deepening of women's voices reflects "the rise of women to more prominent roles in society" which has prompted them to "adopt a deeper tone to project authority and dominance in the workplace."
Women's voices and positions in society have changed over the years, but this persistent criticism of the female voice suggests that something is lagging behind: our perception of women.
"I think if women had been in power for all of time, we'd be having this conversation about men's voices," says Bennett.
Sadly, that isn't the case. So, what can we do to move our perceptions forward? Acknowledging that there are fundamental linguistic differences in the way men, women, and non-binary people speak will help us accept that there isn't just one homogenous, correct way to speak. Being open-minded and receptive to linguistic trends will serve every one of us well.
Next time you find yourself feeling irritated by the way a woman speaks: ask yourself whether it's truly the voice you find annoying — or rather the person it belongs to or the opinions they are expressing.
What really needs to change isn't women's voices, but how we think about women and their voices.

What Do You Know about Social Media?
moan Curt free movies to watch What complete You recognize about Social Media?Business thing | july 4 9, 2009What do you know about social media? Before you answer that question, let me instruct you that you experience more tan you be authorized think. group media is simply addition way for us to communicate and connect with one another. If you are a smart communicator and read the power of connections, you earlier know a lot back social media. What execute you appreciate about familiar media? ante you justification that question, let me tell you that you know new than you may think. Social television is simply another form for Land of Liberty to disseminate and connect with one another. granted that you are a good communicator and understand the power of connections, you already perceive a field about communal media.Ashton Kutcher said separate persons sound can be as forceful as an entire media network, late he surpassed 1 much followers on Twitter, beating CNN. grandfather described this achievement as the democratization of the media. I have to wonder. Wasnt the correspondence democratized before? What form it straightaway a equality because one man can reach 1 million people?Perhaps democracy and democratization are the mistaken words (even though it sounds catchy). What cordial media enjoy done is unleash the power of communication and connection one person at a time. Communicating one-on-one always had a powerful effect on us because it permit us to connect with one another. Everything you read and hear backward social radio requires relation and hut relationships. recall when conversation consisted of three choices?1. Face-to-Face2. Telephone3. Handwritten letterWhen given the particular three choices, we tabbed face-to-face interactions when we knew we had to make a special contact with someone. Telephone acquaintance happened although we execute not use as much intimacy or when space prevented New World from building face-to-face contact. We resorted to the letter as the last personal system of communication.Today, we have many new choices. Nonetheless, our decision-making process leavings the same. How abundant connection, after what precedent much friendship do we need in order to communicate our message? CNN does not care about intimacy; they care backward getting the news broadcasted to crowded people at once. Amazingly, social correspondence also broadcasts news in much the same means CNN does. But, over the origin comes from a friend, a follower, or a connection we are extra likely to believe it. In the past we could determine the communicator during a face-to-face synergy to complete truth. Today, we must depend beginning with building communication that spawn trust and that organize believability. attending is what we accomplish know around social media:1. Our inexperienced people are connected. Todays youth recognize social media; they breathing and snore it every day. They use the tools as ways to share with their friends. As kids, we recycled the telephone. Todays son use germ phones and MySpace. although you put the germ phone with MySpace, you get Twitter. To all young person, the capability of Twitter is a no brainer.2. Social correspondence brings on two-way communication. Where electronic mail was one-way communication that was often not instantaneous, Twitter is two-way and instant. Furthermore, with Twitter you bucket have current two-way connection with practically thousands of people at once. 3. Social radio enables crowd to deepen connections and relationships. I could compare with you quickly complete email. But, through Facebook I pick up what you look like, what you like to do on Sunday afternoon, who your favorite clown are, and where you love to eat. ended Facebook, I find out that your dog receive been incurable or your child conquered a top honor at school. ended Facebook I learn who you are and what makes you tick.4. civil media is here to stay. The way we are relate is in a defiant change and that adjustment centers on social media. Traditional proclamation and show media precondition adapt to this late step-child. contemporary fact, elan Williams, co-founder of Twitter, said, Journalists who embrace the state-of-the-art media will thrive; those that dont wont. 5. Social correspondence is charge changes in marketing and sales. comic way we discover, evaluate and booty products and services is experiencing a major insurgency. Word of mouth investment come not from the neighborhood pharmacist but from what our friends confess us on Facebook or what we hear on Twitter. 6. Ashton Kutcher taught U.S. that the way we hear round news and events is also changing through the social media. The experience that CNN wants 1 million advocate tells that a major network admit the potential of a social networking tool like Twitter. What are the things we do not know round social media?1. Where is social disclosure taking us? Where will we be in 5 years? absolutely not one include a clue.2. Which radio tools will survive? move Twitter a passing fad? Will the little game be bite by the big cat, Google? MySpace is before on the decline. What about Facebook? My instinct is that each of these weapon will bonanza the right niche. MySpace will handle for the very young. Twitter in some form will handle for instant message sort communication world-wide.3. How will social radio affect advertising, public relations, marketing, and sales? My guess is that broadcast, intrusive announcement as we know it today, will not survive. For some products (not many) it will linger in some form. familiar media count a late component to the marketing mix. aside doing so, traditional selling efforts prerequisite adapt. Time will fair us after what precedent and who will survive.4. Whats next? We instantly have screen 2.0 which means an interactive Web. Its abundant more alluring to see a blog in which you jar comment thaw to scan a immobile website. because that saneness blogs have soared in popularity. What will cobweb 3.0 or 2.5 or whatever peek like? tick sure there are a bit gurus out there who can proportion what they see in their luminous balls. But, for better of New World it detritus a mystery. The objection is to be ready. Two effects we bucket count on: we are on the cusp and theres other to come.As a means expert, all this excites me. communal media bring new fortuity to disseminate and to connect. The fun share is marry the party. Inspiration from 7 Up, Lauren Oliver, Julien Baker, and More
Once a month (or so), I share a dozen things that have inspired me to greater personal, professional, and financial success in my life. I hope they bring similar success to your life. 1. Thoreau on happiness Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it will evade you, but if you notice the other things around you, it will gently come and sit on your shoulder. Henry David Thoreau I spent a lot of years of my life chasing happiness, believing that I could somehow build a happy life. What I learned is that such an endeavor is basically impossible. Instead, you should try to build a life thats in line with what your values and principles are, and what youll find is that happiness naturally bubbles up as you get closer and closer to that destination. Happiness is a side effect of doing something worthwhile. When you do worthwhile things, happiness occurs naturally. If you chase happiness for happinesss sake, youll never actually catch it. [embedded content] From the Wikipedia entry on the series: The Up Series is a series of documentary filmsproduced by Granada Television that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old. So far the documentary has had eight episodes spanning 49 years (one episode every seven years) and the documentary has been broadcast on both ITV and BBC. In a 2005 Channel 4 programme, the series topped the list of The 50 Greatest Documentaries. The children were selected to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, with the explicit assumption that each childs social class predetermines their future. Every seven years, the director, Michael Apted, films material from those of the fourteen who choose to participate. The last installment, 56 Up, premiered in May 2012; Apted has stated that filming for 63 Up will occur in late 2018, for release in spring 2019. Apted has also been reported as saying: I hope to do 84 Up when Ill be 99. The aim of the series is stated at the beginning of 7 Up as: Why do we bring these children together? Because we want to get a glimpse of England in the year 2000. The shop steward and the executive of the year 2000 are now seven years old. The video embedded above (if you cant see it, you can reach it by clicking on the link) is the full documentary 7 Up, which covers the fourteen children as they were in 1964, as seven year olds. Each subsequent entry in the series revisits most of the children at seven year intervals in their lives, as things go in different directions for them. I watched these for the first time as a marathon in around 2002, when 42 Up was the newest entry available; I watched the entire series again a few years later after 49 Up was released, and yet again with the making of 56 Up. Each time it utterly charmed me and left me thinking about the fragility and difficulty and beauty of human lives. A few days ago, a friend of mine pointed out that all of the films were freely available on Youtube, so theres no reason not to dive in. This Youtube list contains the entire series, starting with 7 Up and continuing through 56 Up, the most recent entry. 3. Lauren Oliver on the whole of people I shiver, thinking how easy it is to be totally wrong about people; to see one tiny part of them and confuse it for the whole. Lauren Oliver I feel like this is a good quote to pair with 7 Up, actually. In that series and in fact, throughout our lives we get only relatively small glances at these people. We see only little slivers of their lives. Even with the best efforts of the filmmakers, this would be true; a filmmaker visiting a person for a few days once every seven years cannot capture their true nature. Yet, as I watch those films, I cant help but draw some conclusions. I think I would be friends with some of them, and Id probably avoid other ones. Those quick takes may or may not be accurate. Im making them based on really limited information about a person. I might be seeing that person at their best or at their worst. I might be seeing a quirky moment thats not emblematic of them as a whole. Its impossible to really tell. What I do know is this: some of the worst mistakes Ive made in life have been due to snap judgments about people, almost all of them more negative than they ever should have been. I drew some very negative conclusions about people and guided my behavior regarding them based on very little information mixed in with my own ideas and assumptions, and it has cost me many potential dear relationships over the years. The tiny part of a person that you actually see is a pretty poor representative of the whole. This article by Jason Fagone chronicles the store of Jerry and Marge Selbee, who, in their retirement, discovered and then exploited holes in the Michigan and Massachusetts state lottery systems. I found myself reading this article one evening while Sarah was busy grading papers, and I couldnt help but mention to her that this is literally the kind of thing that I can see us doing in retirement. Were both curious people who like to understand how systems work. We arent afraid to take big leaps of faith on things that we feel certain about. Id like to think that Sarah and I, in our later years, will go on a lot of quirky adventures, like Jerry and Marge. Im also sharing this because its just a fun story, a well written one by Jason Fagone. This ones really worth your time. 5. Benjamin Franklin on apologies Never ruin an apology with an excuse. Benjamin Franklin One of the hardest things to do is to genuinely apologize when youve made a mistake and not turn it into an excuse or an avenue for blaming others. Anything beyond I messed up is simply a way to deflect blame off of yourself and, in the process, make the apology a lot less valuable. An apology that ends up being nothing more than a redirection of blame or an excuse of a mistake is a worthless apology; in fact, youre often leaving things in an even worse state because the other person perceives that you wont own up to your mistakes. When you mess up, apologize sincerely without excusing your mistake or blaming others. Admit that you messed up, state that youre sorry for it, and that you want to do what you can to make it right and to make sure it wont happen again. Make it clear that its on you, not on anyone else. Its hard to do that. Its much easier to just shovel the blame onto someone or something else. If you do that, though, you eliminate virtually all of the meaning of the apology and look pretty weak to boot. [embedded content] From the description: Do you know what you want when you die? Do you know how you want to be remembered? In a candid, heartfelt talk about a subject most of us would rather not discuss, Michelle Knox asks each of us to reflect on our core values around death and share them with our loved ones, so they can make informed decisions without fear of having failed to honor our legacies. Life would be a lot easier to live if we talked about death now, Knox says. We need to discuss these issues when we are fit and healthy so we can take the emotion out of it and then we can learn not just what is important, but why its important. This whole video harkens back to a big theme Ive come to really understand in my life in the last few years. The best time to talk about something is when youre as far away from emotion as possible regarding that thing. So, for example, dont talk about death when youre sick. Talk about it when youre healthy and vibrant, so theres as little emotion as possible in the subject. When youre talking to your parents about aging, dont do it at their moment of weakness. Wait for a time of strength, when theyre feeling as healthy and unemotional as possible, and then have that discussion. Dont talk about a marital problem when youre both riding the wave of that problem. Talk about it when youre getting along well and youre far away from that problematic area emotionally. This is a key life lesson, one that has stuck with me over the years, and this video really highlights that idea. 7. Roy T. Bennett on self-improvement and criticism Let the improvement of yourself keep you so busy that you have no time to criticize others. Roy T. Bennett Unless criticism is asked for, criticism of others is rarely a worthwhile endeavor. It achieves very little and often has the opposite effect of what you desire, with the recipient ignoring the content of what youre saying and just being upset with you. Hold it in. If you dont have something worthwhile to say, then dont say it at all. That doesnt mean that one should never criticize. A person should definitely criticize from time to time, but it should generally be at the invitation of the person who seeks criticism and is looking for ways to improve. Brutal honesty doesnt achieve anything worthwhile. [embedded content] From the description: In March of 2016, just a handful of months after her debut album Sprained Ankle was released, Julien Baker came and played a quiet, thoughtful Tiny Desk concert that went on to become one of our most popular and certainly one of the most-talked-about Tiny Desk Concerts of the year. (Its now approaching two million views on YouTube alone.) Fast forward to the summer of 2017, when I heard that a new record was imminent. I dont usually ask an artist back for a second Tiny Desk Concert simply because they have a new release but for Julien, I had to make an exception. With all the love that surrounded her first visit to the NPR offices, I reached out to ask if she would be willing to do something different this time around. Last fall, she delivered. All the songs for her return to the Tiny Desk come from last years Turn Out The Lights. Just a few weeks before the albums release, she came to Washington; we tuned our piano, she brought violinist Camille Faulkner. The first two songs, Hurt Less and Even, were accompanied by Camille, with Julien on piano for the opening tune and acoustic guitar on the second. Its quite stunning, as she sings: Putting my fist through the plaster in the bathroom of a Motel 6 I must have pictured it all a thousand times I swear to God I think Im gonna die I know you were right I cant be fixed, so help me For the last, Julien put together an arrangement of Appointments that begins on electric guitar, which then was looped as a backdrop to her on piano and voice. Julien Baker is a massively talented songwriter with a deeply caring heart and a perfectionist streak all of which delivered to her a career-making year. We are so thrilled to have her return. Set List Hurt Less Even Appointments Shes just fantastic. Well worth a listen. 9. Inspirational notes For the last several months, about once a week or so, Ill stick a note inside of one of my childrens backpacks. Its a note card in an envelope with their name on the front, and on the inside, I just write a short note saying something I admire about their character and how I hope they share that with the world. It takes me about ten minutes or so to do this. I just stop for a little bit, think of some truly worthwhile characteristic that one of my children possesses, and then Ill write about it. Ill tell a quick anecdote about when I saw that characteristic used in a positive way, how I am incredibly proud that Im their parent when I see them using that aspect of themselves, a gentle encouragement to use that characteristic in other aspects of their life, and a general reminder that I love them. Thats it nothing fancy. I know that my kids have read the notes because of comments Ive overheard, but not one of them has said a word about them to me. I do know that theyre read, though, and I do know that theyre thought about, and thats enough. Will it make a positive difference? Maybe. I think it will, given enough time. Dont just get inspired. Be an inspiration. 10. Muhammad Ali on the pebble in your shoe It isnt the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; its the pebble in your shoe. Muhammad Ali Its often one or two little details that make the difference between success and failure. You might be able to perfectly nail everything else you need for a diet, but its that mid-afternoon wave of hunger that you thoughtlessly indulge that undoes things. You might have perfect control over your spending except for that one little linchpin. Maybes its online spending at a particular website, or maybe its regular splurging on food. Whatever it is, theres often some little detail that puts a big scratch on the beautiful surface of your progress. The thing is, its far more meaningful to stop and pull that pebble out of your shoe than to keep on running for a little bit longer and just quit. Fix the little problems before they become big ones. [embedded content] From the description: When trying to come up with a new idea, we all have times when we get stuck. But according to research by behavioral and learning scientist Marily Oppezzo, getting up and going for a walk might be all it takes to get your creative juices flowing. In this fun, fast talk, she explains how walking could help you get the most out of your next brainstorm. Going on walks is unquestionably my most powerful creative tool. I dont have anything else in my repertoire that really compares to it. Its part of the reason why winters are often very hard in terms of writing productivity the weather rarely cooperates with the kind of long outdoor walk that I enjoy. While I enjoy winter in small doses, I wouldnt be surprised at all to find Sarah and I living further south in the winter months when we are older. I think it agrees much better with both of us. Still, I cant laud walking enough if youre trying to piece through a difficult idea in your head or youre trying to brainstorm some solutions. 12. JFK on strength Do not pray for easy lives, my friends. Pray to be stronger men. John Fitzgerald Kennedy Hoping that the future will become easier wont really help very much. Its very likely that the future wont become easier. Instead, recognize that your life right now probably is easier than it will be in the future and plan accordingly. Work a little harder today so you dont have to work quite as hard tomorrow. Save a little money today so you dont have to scramble tomorrow. Dont hope for an easier life. Work for a stronger you. https://www.thesimpledollar.com/inspiration-from-7-up-lauren-oliver-julien-baker-and-more/

A 1996 fighting game in the mold of Street Fighter or Human Kombat, Kizuna Knowledge, is among the most desired games for enthusiasts of Neogeo activities. Also here on TA anyone often observe extended rants moaning about several designer audacious to demand for DLC material or possibly a game update given that they already paid a whole $3 or $FIVE for that recreation, so how challenge they try to produce anymore money-off the game after receiving this kind of premium value! Lessons Learned by RPCVs in Nepal
On April 4, a new trainee in Peace Corps Nepal’s group N204 asked the following question:
What did you learn in Nepal that was incredibly useful while you were there...but no application back home? Like I learned that you can wedge yourself against a mountain pass and hold an umbrella out so cattle wont throw you off. And I leaned that ants will not attack food stored atop a (leaky) kerosene stove. Any others?
Within minutes, answers began pouring in from RPCVs who served 30-40 years ago, to current PCVs serving in Nepal. Most of the responses, despite their variety, make me smile as they ring true to my own experiences here as a current PCV in Nepal, just two months away from my COS. And although responses are still coming in, here are the responses received in the first 10 days following the initial question:
Take warnings about rhinos seriously.
Keep your 2nd floor windows closed during the day as the chickens will fly in and crap all over your bed and perhaps lay an egg.
Don't chew rice.
Always be prepared for an unanticipated holiday.
If you want to write down the combo lock on the door post outside your dera, use Roman numerals - nobody can figure them out.
Just how much one can do without.
The actual difference between wants and needs. Our trunks were delayed between Delhi and Kathmandu so I couldn't take it out to my post, in fact I didn't have it until three months later. La, I had survived without all the stuff I packed in the belief that it would be indispensable.
Don't touch food with your left hand.
Don’t teach 4th and 5th graders that the word for baby chicken in English is "chick."
How to lipnu.
That I have a fairly high tolerance for dysentery.
Priming those awful stoves. I refuse to use white gas backpacking stoves for this reason - I feel I've done that enough for one lifetime!
Learned I was incapable of instantly switching between Nepali and Hindi. It took me a day or two to purge Hindi from my Nepali or vice versa. (Back in the days when summer travel between my post and Kathmandu involved speaking Hindi while walking across the inner Terai and then two days on Indian buses and trains.)
Flies are attracted to light. Rats like block soap.
How to bake brownies in a dekshi oven.
How to make soup from goat skin, lungs and intestines.
The concept of "juto" and associated prohibitions of the left hand.
Not taking anything larger than one-rupee bills into the real hinterlands, circa 1970 when three rupees was the standard day's wage, although sahibs were expected to be a little more generous.
Muddy water will settle out overnight and be fit for drinking, after siphoning and purifying, the next morning.
How to plow with water buffalo.
From the class 3 English book I learned that "Mr. Sherchan has three cocks."
Hiking a peak in chappals (flip flops).
To run in chappals.
Spitting tobacco juice on your feet while wearing chappals in the jungle during monsoon keeps the leeches off.
Sleep under a mosquito net so the rats don't run across you at night.
You can make dahi (yogurt) out of the sweetened Nestle powdered milk as long as you have a starter.
How to make a projecting microscope out if scraps- milk cans, blown light bulbs, chapels and cheap lenses.
Covering my cup with my left elbow while waving my left hand over my plate to keep flies away, and eating with my right.
If you want to buy something, be the first to arrive at that particular pasal and and make a bid. You will get the best price of the day. (Morning business. I think the Nepali word is “bahoni.”)
By reading TATA trucks, I learned to "work like a coolie and live like a prince."
Applied hygroscopic principles when trekking by holding a small container of salt to sprinkle on engorged leeches. Salt absorbed the moisture and the leeches melted like the Wicked Witch of the East when Dorothy soaked her.
Speak Nepali all the time with everyone - especially the didis (women older than you) - you will make friends everywhere you go. People will look out for you. I cannot count the number of times I could not hike all the way back to my village before dark and people took me in for the night and fed me.
To completely shower with my lungi on and then dress in front of onlookers at the dera without showing anything from shoulder to below my knee. This has come in handy at the beach, stateside.
How to make rotis (flat breads).
I have found no application for knowing how to order a toomba (millet-based Nepali alcohol) back home.
Bathing politely at the well.
I have never had to bribe an Indian border guard again since PC days.
Lipnuing/mudding the floors of my dhera.
Putting your right turn signal on not to turn, but to indicate that the oncoming bus can pass on your right.
“Rato mato, chiplo bato.” (Red mud, slippery road.)
Didi taught me how to make daal bhaat. But in the states my husband makes it. Also, of course, how to eat well with my hands.
That chickens love eating my spit (and snot).
That chickens are evil.
Surfing the Himalaya on top of an overloaded TATA truck.
Identifying parts of a goat in the dark using my teeth.
Drinking Urvashi out of a warm coke bottle (on top of a TATA truck).
Steering rickshaws after a long bout of tomba.
Calming rickshaw drivers who are concerned that a tomba laagyo baideshi (foreigner drunk from tomba alcohol) is steering.
Fixing chappals with matches and getting local matches to light in order to fix chappals.
Bathing with only two mugs of lukewarm water.
Using a cattle prod to keep monkeys out of the food supplies.
To put my food containers on a plate of water to keep the ants out.
Learning how to wear a dhoti.
Throwing a casting net.
Skills I've used but not nearly often enough: Making raksi, chang, and yes one time even toomba.
I learned many ways to refuse another portion of rice.
Make jaard!
You don't need to say dhanyabad (thank you) for every transaction and there is no equivalent reply for thank you.
How to outrun a charging water buffalo, then climbing a tree to evade him.
Chortens and behind gompas were go to places when explosive diarrhea struck.
How to estimate the age of a pile of poop by seeing how many worms appeared. Few worms -- fresh. Many worms – older.
Real business gets done when you show up at an Under Secretary's home before morning bhat, not at his office or an embassy cocktail party.
A dhera directly above the buffalos' and goats' shelter can be cozy warm in winter.
How to refill a disposable Bic lighter.
How to do 1 and 2 while squatting.
How to fiddle with the knob and simultaneously prop a shortwave radio at just the right angle to pick up a broadcast.
To sling snot, Nepali style.
How to properly peel & suck the juice from ukhu (sugar cane) using your teeth.
Always store your med kit in your metal foot locker, lest while you're away from post for a few weeks, the rats will chew through the plastic of the kit and leave chewed up condoms scattered around your room.
Deet eats through duct tape (and mosquito nets).
Always walk on the upslope side of a yak!
How to jovially discuss poo composition over dinner.
How to hold a container of drinking water above my face, lean my head back a bit and swallow a steady stream coming from the spigot without choking or dowsing my shirt.
Once a child can walk she is potty-trained.
Peeing while standing so no one notices!
You can lay your bedding in hot sun and the fleas will flee.
The way to get rid of udus (bed bugs) in a rope bed is to submerge it for a sufficiently long time, weighted down with stones.
A bokha (un-neutered male goat, as opposed to a khusi, neutered male goal) that cries all night will be a bohka that is quickly cutnu-ed (cut) and eaten the next morning.
Filling up the unkara's (silver jugs) with water before bed is both good for the gods and helpful in having easy access to water to make morning chia (tea).
You can toilet train a baby to pee by (softly) shaking them over a bush and saying "sssssss sssssss ssssss.”
You can put most types of pot on the fire and prevent them from getting burnt if you first coat the bottom/sides of it with a mix of ash and water on it.
Curling all your fingers into your palm except your pointer finger and thumb, and flicking them up to indicate -- where are you going?)

How to plow with oxen.
How to boil and filter water buffalo milk.
Terai ants will get into your peanut butter even submerged in a bucket of water with a brick on top. They will sacrifice themselves to become a bridge for the others.
How to eat ants that found their way into your peanut butter.
How to bounce down a mountain without hurting your knees, feet or ankles to avoid Sahib’s knee (the Sherpa shuffle).
Not to use too much battery acid to cure/tan a rabbit pelt.
Ants attack my food even on my kerosene stove.
Hiring a rickshaw and having the driver sit in the back with your friends so you can pedal home, cause it looks like fun and somehow feels right.
Opening flimsy padlocks without a key by batting them around.
There's no line here! Elbows out and go for an opening!
If the river water is deep and current strong, you can cross as a chorus line, arms around each others' waists.

Susan Sarandon: ‘Its an easy place to put your frustrations, to blame me’
The actor discusses playing Bette Davis in the new small-screen drama Feud and why shes tired of people criticizing her for refusing to support Hillary Clinton
Susan Sarandon is here to talk about a much-publicized feud between two successful women. But, as the Oscar-winning actor and activist had made crystal clear the week before I spoke to her, during a tense interview on MSNBCs All In, shes not interested in talking about that feud.
Rather than yet another over-analysis of her role in Hillary Clintons shock election loss, shed rather turn the discussion to talk of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, two women also pitted against each other, this time in 1960s Hollywood. In Feud: Bette and Joan, the latest FX show from Ryan Murphy, creator of American Horror Story and American Crime Story, the intricacies of their famed battle are brought to vibrant life with Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Sarandon playing Davis. Its a fun, snappy eight-episode behind-the-scenes reveal (the next season will focus on the feud between Prince Charles and Princess Diana) and provides a worthy reminder of the destructive influence that meddling men had in tearing the two women apart.
This is a really blatant example of trying to control two people by making sure they dont join forces, she tells me on the phone, dog yapping in the background. I think that mentality and lack of imagination you can see in all the reality shows. Thats the entirety of their plots: just turning women against each other and getting them drunk so that something dramatic happens, even if its a fight over nothing. Its always easier, I think, to suck people into drama when its negative as opposed to something thats constructive.

If thered been a Real Housewives of Hollywood in the early 60s, Bette and Joans on-set sparring while making Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? would have made for a ratings magnet. There was a pay dispute, nastiness in gossip columns, petty pranks and even physical violence. But over 50 years later, the business is different: studios no longer own stars in the way they once did and women are making headway towards equality. Competition is not what it once was.
I think that happened just in my generation, Sarandon says. I see examples of actresses just a little bit ahead of me who really saw women as their enemy and had no intention of forming any kind of alliance. Now, thats certainly not true. You might be envious of a part you didnt get but its switched to understanding that you need women as allies and that were stronger together, not divided.
Its an ethos thats been reflected throughout her career, with roles in a number of Bechdel test-smashing films, including The Witches of Eastwick, Thelma and Louise, Little Women, Stepmom and last years acclaimed comeback vehicle The Meddler. Shes also been keen to work with more female directors, having recently worked with a set of them on the production of Feud, but one area of equality that shes less sure about is that awkward matter of who gets paid what.
I dont think it matters that Jennifer Lawrence is paid 70 times more than what I am, she says. Its a business that is so subjective and I feel so lucky to be able to earn a living, and this is why to go after pay equality is a really chancy subject because if Tom Cruise has a leading lady thats in the movie as much as he is, should she get the same amount of money if shes been in the business a shorter amount of time? And should a character actor thats been in the business for 50 years not get paid more? Its a sin what happens to these supporting actors through the years where they can barely exist on the pay they get. Theres no equity in terms of value, and who knows how these decisions are made. So you cant apply that to feeling unfair because the whole fact that actors get paid as much as we do is ridiculous. I mean, what a fabulous life. I cant bitch about whatever my pay level is. I dont focus on that.
Susan Sarandon in The Meddler. Photograph: Sony
But as content as Sarandon seems, theres no denying that shes been frustratingly absent from the spotlight in recent years. Shes not stopped working but more often shes been taking on small, little-seen roles. Its not simply a dearth of scripts for women of a certain age in the industry, its also Sarandon being understandably picky. Unlike many other Oscar-winning female actors, shes resisted the urge to take on thankless roles in franchise fodder. She chose not to play the doomed female president in last years Independence Day: Resurgence (When I read the script, I couldnt understand what was going on) and the only sequel youll see her in any time soon is John Turturros Big Lebowski spin-off (something she calls a crazy film that she still cant believe they got the money for).
After the success of Thelma and Louise, many thought it would be a game-changer, showing Holly-bros that theres a sizable audience for a film about female friendship but as Bridesmaids has since shown, these hits are often seen as unlikely exceptions and fail to cause the seismic shift predicted. I think that a woman can look at a story that has a male protagonist and can identify that she could do that or be in that situation, she says. But I think its harder for male executives to imagine that anybody is really gonna get into a female lead because its hard for them to imagine. I dont think its meant to be a mean thing, I just think its a lack of imagination.
Its meant that, while shes starred in a number of aforementioned female-fronted films, shes still been paired mostly with men throughout her career. Its been a generally harmonious time, but Sarandon recalls the closest shes got to having a Bette v Joan situation. There was one gentleman, she says. He hadnt really done films, I dont think, and he was in the midst of a very successful TV run and was a heart-throb. There were definitely some problems and hed developed some habits, because in the atmosphere where he was working, he wasnt used to women challenging him in any way and was spoiled by the rules that they set up. At one point, they allowed him to leave on my reverse at the end of the day, so I was suddenly expected to do my lines with the script supervisor and him gone for my close-up.
She wont give me a name but she counts it as a rare occurrence. I dont thrive on tension or any kind of aggression, she says. But its an unavoidable part of the job, especially, depressingly, for a woman who chooses to speak her mind. While men might still be seen as brave and refreshing, women who speak out are still often painted as difficult or bitchy. Sarandon knows this all too well.
I think it is more annoying to have a woman with opinions for a lot of people, she says. I couldnt give you any solid proof that has hurt my chances in the business. Today in the New York Times, they were talking about the Academy awards and the fact that I was one of the people who didnt get a nomination for The Meddler, and [it] mentions that it might have something to do with the Clintonized Hollywood, when I supported Bernie Sanders.

Which brings us to the elephant in the room (or over the phone). Sarandon was a vocal supporter of Sanders as he ran against Clinton to become the Democratic pick for president. When he lost out on the nomination, she expressed her frustration and publicly endorsed the Green candidate Jill Stein instead, stating that she did not vote with her vagina. She had previously called Clinton more dangerous than Trump.
I have had a huge amount of backlash, she says. Theres been a really strong blame for a lot of things that are obviously not my fault.
A cursory scan of Twitter shows a stream of bile all the way from the Will & Grace star Debra Messing to the author Kurt Eichenwald. Sarandon remains defiant, unapologetic and frustrated with Democrats who suggest that shes let the party down.
Theres no valid argument, she says. Its just an easy place to put your frustrations, to blame me. I mean, if you read the list of people who voted Hillary Clinton and then I think its me and Viggo Mortensen on the other side. Youd have to be delusional to actually think that Beyonc and Jay Z and George Clooney and Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, and the list goes on, were actually overpowered by the two of us.
But shes unperturbed, still hyper-aware of the daily failings of Trumps government. And despite resistance, shes continuing to show up at Democratic events, such as a recent anti-Trump rally in New York. Im focusing on reaching out and forming a coalition not only with all of Hillarys people but with people I know that voted for Trump, because we have serious work to do now, and we cant indulge in blaming or depression or any of those things, she says. There isnt time any more to look back. We have to look forward.
Feud begins on FX on 5 March at 10pm with a UK broadcaster yet to be confirmed
