Welcome to the Show 🍀 Happy 🍀 The Power of Love 🍀 Get the Hell Out 🍀 Sad Ending 🍀 Let Me Love You 🍀 Didn't Know
Thinking of you Is a stabbing pain What I can't forget is Something like a curse to me One day, one second If I can erase it My world would be more beautiful
Objectively, you knew this was probably (hopefully) the lowest point of your entire life. You'd very recently left a relationship with an emotionally and physically abusive partner; your body and spirit were, to put it bluntly, battered and bruised. You'd been fired from your job for missing yet another shift, something else for which you could thank your now ex-boyfriend since he'd been too busy gaslighting you and kept you from going to work. And since you'd (stupidly) moved into your ex's apartment a few months ago, you also now had nowhere to live.
But your survival instinct had taken over, and it wasn't allowing you to feel hopeless. It had held your head up and walked you right down to the Community Center.
How many times had you walked by this place and seen the advertisements for free counseling? You'd never thought the ads were meant for you, but that's how life is sometimes, right?
You couldn't deny that you needed it right now. After what you'd been through? You might need counseling for the rest of your life, honestly. But, right now, you just wanted to calm down the thoughts racing through your mind. You wanted to get back to who you were before you'd met him. You wanted to forget everything; erase him completely from your past.
Before you could chicken out or let your pride take over, you reached out to grab the door handle and opened the door, stepping into what you hoped would be a better future for yourself.
Being with you Is a bittersweet pleasure What I keep remembering is A state of lingering attachment One day, one second If the afterimage fades away Might finally be able to see clearly How nice This world could be for me My brain excludes you How much would it be worth Get the hell out Get the hell out
After a couple of hours, you were more emotionally drained than you'd ever been (which was saying something), but you had a job interview and a place to stay lined up. So, that was something! You had also set up another appointment with the counselor tomorrow to start working through your trauma; you weren't particularly looking forward to it, but you also couldn't wait to just get this horrific person the hell out of your mind.
You gathered up all of the paperwork and pamphlets the counselor had provided, saying the name of the apartment building in your head over and over so you wouldn't forget. Apparently, it was fairly close to the Community Center since they had a partnership with the building owner to allow people in situations like yours a place to get back on their feet, so even if you did forget the name, it should be easy to find.
But still. You didn't want to forget. Today felt like your first day as a real adult, totally on your own. Independent. You didn't want to screw it up! So, you murmured the name to yourself, clutching all of your documents to your chest as you left your counselor's office and headed back to the front doors.
You had barely stepped into the hallway before you collided with someone passing by.
Oof!
"Oh, I'm so sorry," you heard a voice say, though it barely registered because all the papers in your hands had slipped out and fallen to the floor.
You immediately crouched down to try and pick them up, frantically saying the name of the apartment building so you wouldn't forget it amidst all of this hubbub.
Another pair of hands came into view, helping you pick up the papers, and you glanced up to place a face to them -- and the voice you'd heard, presumably.
Your head jerked back slightly in surprise.
"Wonpil?" you asked.
Wonpil jumped a little, his gaze immediately darting to meet yours. As soon as he saw you, that signature wide smile appeared on his lips.
"Y/N," he greeted, his voice soft and warm.
It had been... how many years since you'd seen him? You'd lost track of how long it had been since graduating high school. And it's not like you and Wonpil had been close friends, but his smile and his voice and his kindhearted aura hadn't changed a bit.
"What a small world," you chuckled. "What are you doing here?"
Wonpil continued to gather up all of your papers as he answered. "I work here. What about you? Did you just get hired?"
Ah, so he obviously assumed all this paperwork was New Employee Paperwork. Well, at least you knew he wasn't being nosy and looking at it!
"No..." you replied slowly.
Wonpil didn't reply at first, and when the two of you had picked up everything, you both stood, and he handed you a stack of papers.
"I'm sorry," he said, his forehead wrinkled. "Do you need anything?"
Like almost any other person would, you almost said 'No, thank you.' It was one thing to share your innermost thoughts and feelings to a total stranger, but it was another thing altogether to share them with someone you actually knew.
But, for some reason you couldn't explain, you answered him with a nod. Your throat began to tighten with emotion, and tears welled up in your eyes when you said, "Actually, yeah. I need a lot."
Something about Wonpil just exuded safety, and even though you weren't even sure you could classify him as an acquaintance after all these years, a quiet voice in your head urged you to be honest with him.
"Okay," Wonpil replied, his voice still soft but more strong and sure. "Do you want to go get a coffee or something?"
"I -- I need to go to this apartment building," you stammered.
"I know the one, I can take you there if you'd like," he offered.
You answered with a strained "Sure" before following him out of the Community Center and onto the street.
The next half hour was a bit of a blur, and you ended up being extremely thankful that you'd run into Wonpil. He obviously had a lot of experience with this, because he greeted the employee behind the front desk of the apartment's leasing office by name. And when you weren't sure which of the many papers in your hands you needed to hand over, Wonpil delicately took the stack from you and rifled through it to find the right one.
You also noticed something that seemed insignificant on the surface but, in reality, was extremely important: Wonpil was extremely aware of you without being overbearing. He didn't touch you or even reach out toward you. He stood just close enough to signal he was with you but not too close to make you nervous. And when the employee offered to lead you to your apartment, Wonpil wordlessly raised his eyebrows at you to ask if you wanted him to come with you.
(You nodded, of course. Wonpil was probably the only person you felt safe around at the moment.)
You weren't exactly sure what Wonpil's role was at the Community Center, but whatever it was, you could tell he was perfect for the job.
After you received the key, Wonpil (who was still out in the hallway even after you opened the door and stepped inside) said, "I'm actually on the floor above, so if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Wait," you said as you dumped your papers on the kitchen counter. "You live here?"
Wonpil's cheeks turned a bit pink. "I moved here after I started working at the Center. I'm... actually the one who started the partnership with the building owner."
That almost made you want to cry.
Obviously, you had put up a huge wall and didn't know if you would be able to trust anyone ever again. But if anyone could do it, you had a feeling deep down it would be Wonpil.
Time, hurry up and run fast Until you become a speckle far away You're still so clear in my mind Ruining my day every day How nice This world could be for me My brain excludes you How much would it be worth Will you get out of Inside my mind I don't want to live Like something's holding me back
6 Months Later
A wave of sadness and frustration washed over you as you stared at the ceiling, just barely stopping yourself from checking the time on your phone.
The last time you'd looked, it had been just after 2am; honestly, you weren't sure you even wanted to know what time it was now.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the first night you hadn't been able to sleep this week.
While your counselor at the Community Center had helped you get a job and an apartment incredibly quickly, they hadn't yet been able to get rid of your negative thoughts. Your abusive ex was still floating around in your brain, throwing the usual emotionally manipulative and critical words at you.
Tears pricked your eyes as those words got louder and louder inside your head. They were mostly tears of anger because it had been six months! How long was it going to take to erase him from your life?!
As soon as the sun came up a few hours later, you changed into the first clean pair of sweats you could find and headed to the coffee shop across the street. After getting maybe one hour of sleep all night, you needed to consume some caffeine before you could do anything else.
By now, the morning shift employees at the coffee shop knew you, and the incredibly kind person behind the counter began making your order as soon as you walked in.
"Iced vanilla latte with oat milk," they said after you paid at the register, handing you the cup. "And an Americano."
"Thank you, Alex," you grinned as you took both drinks.
As you walked back to your apartment building, you started listing out everything good and beautiful about your life, a tactic your counselor had suggested a few months ago when you'd been feeling particularly anxious.
"I have a job," you began, muttering to yourself. "I have a place to live. I have food in my fridge. I have an iced vanilla latte in my hand."
You took a sip of said latte, feeling a grin curving your lips.
"The sky is a beautiful shade of blue and orange. If there were trees around, I would hear birds chirping. I guess I could pretend the honking traffic and sirens are birds."
You continued your list as you arrived back home and headed for the staircase, reminding yourself that you were physically healthy enough to walk up three flights of stairs, financially stable enough to afford daily visits to the coffee shop, and maybe most importantly, you had the day off today.
Honestly, why hadn't you thought of that earlier? Knowing that you didn't have to go to work today instantly calmed your nerves about barely getting any sleep -- it didn't matter because you had nothing to do today! So, by the time you arrived on the third floor, you were grinning from ear to ear and feeling light and fluffy inside.
Speaking of light and fluffy, there was one more thing you were grateful for that you needed to add to your list.
Before you could, though, the apartment door you were heading toward opened.
You held out the Americano, your smile brightening as Wonpil looked up and realized you were there.
"Good morning," you greeted cheerfully.
"Morning," Wonpil replied, his voice a bit shy, as he took the drink from you. "Thanks for the coffee, and I really mean that, but what's up?"
"What do you mean what's up?" you chuckled. The two of you started walking back to the staircase; you knew Wonpil was on his way to work, and since it was just around the corner and you had nothing else to do, you figured you would walk with him.
"Isn't it your day off?" he asked in between sips of his Americano. "Why are you up so early, and why did you bring me coffee?"
You'd been friends with Wonpil for 6 months now and had known him much longer than that -- you knew he wasn't asking in a suspicious way. He just wasn't that kind of person. He was, without a doubt, the kindest, sweetest soul you'd ever known.
"It is, indeed, my day off," you answered. "But I couldn't sleep."
Wonpil simply hummed and nodded. He knew exactly what that meant by now.
"Are you... okay?" he asked quietly.
It took you a few seconds to swallow down the lump of emotion in your throat, and then you answered, "No."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
During the first month or two of your friendship with Wonpil, it had been a bit difficult to navigate the difference between Counselor Wonpil and Friend Wonpil. Honestly, you'd felt awkward talking to him about your past because you hadn't wanted him to think you were taking of advantage of him and just trying to get a free therapy session.
Thankfully, Wonpil had caught on to your hesitancy pretty quickly. He'd invited you out for coffee one morning and had assured you all he wanted was to be your friend and to help you, not in a professional sense. He'd become a counselor in the first place because he loved helping people, and that extended to people in his personal life, too. He had also told you it was absolutely fine if you still didn't feel comfortable confiding in him, and that had been the deciding factor for you. The minute he gave you the power to decide was when you knew you could trust him -- at least with this. (You weren't sure you would ever be able to fully, completely, implicitly trust anyone ever again...).
"I just feel like I'm making no progress," you admitted as you fiddled with your straw and watched your shoes. "It's been half a year since I left, but I still think about him all the time. Some of the things he said to me, I can still hear them in my head, clear as day. All I want is to forget about him, and I thought that would've happened by now."
Wonpil walked just a little bit closer to you. He didn't touch you because he never touched you unless you initiated it. He'd also never said anything out loud about why he did that, but you figured he simply understood how your previous relationship had affected you. And you appreciated it more than you could ever put into words.
"Six months is not that long when you really think about it," he assured you. "It's okay that you still think about him. It's completely normal, honestly, and you also have to be prepared that you'll always think about him in some capacity. I know you want to erase him from your memory, but.... I don't know if that's possible."
You let out a whiny groan, feeling tears stinging the backs of your eyes. "But I don't want to always think about him!" you lamented. "I want to live my own life and just be... be free!"
You could see the Community Center up ahead, and Wonpil began to slow his steps, eventually stopping at the corner of the building.
"You already are free," he told you as he turned to face you. "And I'm pretty sure that if you saw him again, you wouldn't go back to him."
"Of course not," you replied immediately.
"See? He doesn't have that kind of hold on you, at least. And that's something! You have made progress, you just can't see it because it's happening so gradually. But I promise you that you have."
Thankfully, a loud ambulance passed by then, giving you time to gather your thoughts and rein in your tears. (You had certainly cried in front of Wonpil before, but you still weren't fully comfortable being that vulnerable around someone yet.)
As soon as the quiet settled over you, you lifted your head to meet his gaze. "Thank you," you said simply, your voice just barely above a whisper.
You still weren't sure if you believed him, but you knew him pretty well at this point; he wouldn't lie to you about something like this.
Wonpil replied with a wide, sunny grin, one that made your heart ache in a good way. And because you knew he wouldn't, you stepped up and wrapped your arms around him.
He wasted no time in hugging you back, his arms firm and comforting, the sweet and fresh scent of his cologne invading your senses and instantly calming you down.
"Call me if you need me, okay?" he murmured into your ear.
You nodded, and he squeezed you before letting go and stepping away.
"Have a good day," you told him with a watery grin.
As he turned to walk into the Community Center, you felt a very strong urge to reach out and take his hand, to stop him from leaving.
And it was then you realized... you didn't ever want him to leave.
How nice This world could be for me My brain excludes you How much would it be worth Get the hell out Get the hell out
You'd been sitting on your feelings for almost a whole month now, and the only explanation you had for that was because you were scared.
In your head, you knew that Wonpil was different. He was not your ex by any stretch of the imagination. They were probably as different as two people could be. Wonpil would never, ever, ever in a million years say and do the things that your ex had said and done to you. He was a perfect and amazing friend, so if he miraculously returned your feelings, you knew he would be a perfect and amazing boyfriend.
But your heart was still at war with your head, and it wouldn't let you believe anything it said.
You'd lost track of how many times you'd decided to tell him and then changed your mind just minutes later.
But then one day he showed up at your door, holding up a blue shirt.
"I need your help," he frowned as soon as you swung the door open.
"Okay, I'm all ears," you replied, actually feeling your heart swell. For once, he needed your help!
"Which shirt looks better?" He gestured to the light pink button-down he was currently wearing before moving his other arm and displaying the blue crewneck sweater.
"Definitely the pink," you answered without hesitation. "Why? What's the occasion?"
Wonpil's cheeks flushed, and he didn't quite meet your eye when he said, "I'm going on a date."
You couldn't stop your eyebrows quickly darting up or your eyes widening with surprise.
"...A date?"
"Yeah," Wonpil replied, pressing his lips together nervously. "Dowoon set me up with his neighbor, so we're going over to the food trucks for dinner."
Oh.
A date.
Wonpil was going on a date.
With someone who was not you.
Of course, you couldn't blame him. He had no idea how you felt, and even if he did, he may not feel the same way. Or he may not want to date someone with as much trauma as you.
"Ah... cool," you managed to get out, hoping there was a smile on your lips. "Sounds fun."
Wonpil tilted his head, his brow wrinkling. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah!" you chirped, but even you could hear that your voice was too high and too squeaky, and you had absolutely answered too quickly.
"...Are you sure?"
You didn't want to risk replying with a blatantly false answer, so you simply nodded.
"If there's something on your mind, you know you can tell me," Wonpil assured you gently. "Are you... scared you'll never go on a date again? I promise you will, if that's what you want. It may take some time -- longer than you think, but I know --"
The words which had been festering in your mind for a month suddenly came to life, hurling themselves out of your mouth before you could stop them. "I like you."
Wonpil immediately froze.
"I'm sorry, this is terrible timing," you admitted, barely able to meet his gaze. "But I like you, and I'm just... I don't want you to go on a date with someone else, but I also fully understand if you don't feel the same way."
"I do."
Your eyes darted to his face, and you wondered if maybe you'd just imagined him saying that.
"You what?" you asked dumbly.
"I do," he repeated. "I do feel the same way. But I know how difficult things have been for you, and I had no idea if you would be ready for something. I was going to wait for you, but Dowoon said..."
He trailed off, and the sound of your pounding heart filled the silence for a few seconds.
"I should have learned by now to stop listening to Dowoon," Wonpil finally said with a soft chuckle.
You wanted to laugh with him, but you knew this wasn't just going to be a 'And they lived happily ever after' moment.
"But the thing is, I don't know if I'm ready. I realized, like, a month ago that I liked you as more than a friend, but I haven't said anything because... I'm too scared."
Wonpil took a tiny step closer, and it was then you realized you were still standing in your open doorway.
You ushered him inside, closing the door behind him and taking his blue sweater, folding it delicately over a chair at your kitchen table.
When you turned around, Wonpil was standing as he always was -- close but not too close.
"It's okay to be scared," he assured you. "And I understand why you feel that way. You don't have to, but... could you tell me what exactly you're scared of?"
You took a deep, shaky breath, letting it out slowly through your mouth the way you'd learned in your therapy sessions. This was going to be difficult, but you wanted to do it. Wonpil was worth it.
"I'm scared of being vulnerable like that again. I'm scared of trusting someone so fully only to get that trust handed back to me in shreds. I'm scared that I'll never fully heal from what happened to me. I'm scared that he will always take up a part of my mind and that you'll eventually come to resent me for it. I'm scared that if I do ever let myself be with you... I'll just lose you."
Of course, tears began streaming down your cheeks as you said all of that, and you saw Wonpil's fingers twitching, as if he wanted nothing more than to reach out and cradle your face, wipe your tears away.
One part of you didn't want to be touched right now, but another part needed to feel his warmth so badly, you thought you might collapse if you didn't.
So, you reached out and took his wrist, bringing his hand up to your face and placing his palm on your cheek.
He instantly curved his hand, his fingers gently grasping your jaw and neck while his thumb swiped just underneath your eye.
"We don't have to do anything you don't want to do," he whispered. "I know how long it can take to heal. We can take things slowly."
"But what if it takes --"
"I'll wait."
Your vision blurred as you gazed at him, your cheek hot where he cradled it.
"I'll wait," he repeated. "However long you need. I'll wait for you. I promise."
"What if I never heal?" you croaked, your voice so tiny that you were surprised he even heard you.
"I like you just as you are. I know that you can heal -- that you will get through this -- but even if you don't, then all that means is you'll stay the person you are right now. And that's the person I fell for."
"What if --"
"My feelings won't change," he interrupted, obviously guessing that you'd been about to ask 'What if I get better and change too much and you don't like the person I become?' "I know it's hard for you to trust, but if you can let yourself trust just one thing, let it be that. My feelings for you won't change."
You took another few deep breaths before stepping up to him and winding your arms around his neck.
After he circled your waist, his hands gripping you tightly, he said, "We'll take it one day at a time, okay?"
At first, you simply nodded. But then, you remembered something kind of important.
So, you pulled away from him just enough to be able to see his face, and you asked, "Starting today?"
Wonpil's brow furrowed at your question. "Starting today? What do you mean?"
"You said we'll take it one day at a time. Is that starting today? Or do we have to start tomorrow so you can go on your date?"
It was taking every ounce of strength not to laugh, but then Wonpil's expression very swiftly turned to one of slight horror and major embarrassment. He looked so cute that you couldn't hold back any longer. You pulled him back into a hug and chuckled, feeling your heart starting to glow inside your chest.
One day at a time. That was the best you could do right now, and you would tell yourself over and over until you believed it: That was enough.

Resfeber
resfeber (n.) ~ the tangled feeling of fear and excitement before a jounrey begins
Pairing: Kim Wonpil (Day6) x GN!Reader; Genre: Hybrid AU, Fluff, a little angst; Rating: sfw, pg-13; Warnings: mentions of anxiety, hints of hybrid mistreatments, hints of anxiety attacks, mentions of therapy; Wordcount: 1.712
Summary: You were afraid of basically everything. Even the tiniest sound made you anxious and you couldn’t go anywhere you haven’t been before. The downside of being a cheetah hybrid. Therefore it was decided you would get a companion, someone who would help you through the day and any panic attack. A dog hybrid.
A/N: I don’t remember how long this has been on my wip list... *sigh* buuuut it is inspired by the fact that cheetahs get emotional support dogs in zoos... which makes me very soft..
You fidgeted on your seat, unable to stay still. Your tail flicked around almost impatiently. Every few seconds your gaze wandered to the clock on the wall next to you. Each time you calculated the remaining time anew. You started bouncing with your leg as your senses went into overdrive.
“Maybe this was a bad idea”, you mumbled and picked on the skin around your nails. Your gaze wandered back to the clock. Five more minutes.
Not able to stay seated, you got up and paced around the room. You took deep breaths in hopes to calm down.
“You knew this was coming. You prepared everything for this to come. It’s going to be fine. Dr. Park said this would help me.”
Before the hybrid rights were evoked you had stayed with a human, who had told you everything you were supposed to do. You never had to think for yourself or worry about doing something wrong even if you only sat near his chair. You simply had to wait for his next command. Now though, you got a life of your own and you just couldn’t handle it. What were you supposed to do? How did someone live without being told what to do?
Therefore Dr. Park had started to visit you for regular therapy sessions. He was the one who suggested a companion to ease your anxiety. Something you had discussed with him over a dozen sessions before you agreed to it.
You froze on the spot when you heard a car door slam in front of your home. You glanced at the clock, seeing only a minute had passed. Meaning you still had four more minutes before your visitor arrived. Yet the footsteps outside coming closer to your front door made it abundantly clear they were already here.
A nervous chirp left your lips once the doorbell rang. You had no more minutes to prepare yourself anymore.
“Y/N? It’s Dr. Park! I’m here with someone who’d like to meet you. Could you open up the door? Without sprinting away this time?”
You winced involuntarily at the memory from his last visit. You took one last deep breath and turned towards the door. “I’m a predator, I don’t sprint to run away. I’m totally calm and I got this and everything is fine and they are probably very nice and Dr. Park is right and…”
You opened the door.
“So nice to meet you!” An excited young male greeted you, making you jump on the spot. Without noticing, he grabbed your hand and shook it vigorously. All while he grinned from ear to ear. “I’m Wonpil! I’m a dog hybrid, labrador to be precise. Did you make something to eat? It smells amazing.” He inhaled deeply as he closed his eyes in the process, still holding one of your hands.
You blinked several times before your eyes wandered over his hybrid features: the brown floppy ears between his dark hair, slightly elongated canines, a warmer temperature than the human average as well as the rapidly moving tail behind him.
Your gaze switched to Dr. Park, showing you weren’t so sure about this whole situation. To your dismay his expression was as unreadable as always. He simply gestured all of you to go inside, probably because he didn’t want to hunt you down after you sprinted away with inhumanely speed.
When you reached the living room and sat down on the couch, Wonpil immediately sat down next to you - not losing his excited manner in the least.
“We already discussed how this is supposed to work”, Dr. Park said calmly and sat down on a plush chair opposite of the couch. He observed all of your reactions towards Wonpil. “Did you prepare everything like I asked you to do?”
You nodded shortly. “I prepared the spare room and ordered more groceries online. I also made some space in the bathroom.” Even though you said it out loud, your brain couldn’t quite believe the fact you wouldn’t be living alone anymore. Or at least for the time being until you were able to control your anxiety attacks.
“That’s really considerate of you. Thank you.” Wonpil smiled brightly and nodded in appreciation. “This is quite the change for you. I’m happy you’re doing so much for this. It means a lot to me!”
You bit on your lower lip and quickly grabbed your tail, knowing the tip would just flick around like crazy from the sudden attention on you.
Wonpil laughed softly, suppressing the urge to coo at your antics. “I’m also nervous”, he admitted and clutched his hands in his lap, “but I feel like we’re going to become really good friends.” Even though you were a predator, the nervousness you radiated felt palpable and Wonpil wanted nothing more than to hug you and calm you down. He knew he couldn’t do that right now as you two were still strangers to one another. Yet he offered you his hand, holding it with the palm facing the ceiling.
His heart nearly burst into dozens of tiny pieces when you delicately placed your hand in his, accepting his words and most importantly him into your life.
After a few more necessities were discussed, Dr. Park bid his goodbye and left you two alone in your now shared home. You still felt slightly uneasy about all of this but you knew it was for the best.
The first week together you tiptoed around Wonpil, whenever you exited your room - the only space you had solely for yourself. Of course you didn’t deliberately try to avoid him but you didn’t know how to act around him. Not that you knew how to act around anybody in the first place.
“Morning”, Wonpil greeted you quietly from behind, making you jump slightly and turn around to him. He smiled sheepishly and waved one hand hesitantly.
You frowned in thought, noticing he wasn’t as chipper as before. “Are you unhappy?” You clutched your hands and started fidgeting with your fingers. Somehow you didn’t like the thought of him being unhappy.
Wonpil tilted his head to one side, looking at you with a puzzled expression. Once it dawned on him, he quickly shook his head. “No, no, no. I’m just trying to make you feel comfortable around me.”
Your eyes widened in surprise and you felt the dread bubbling up in your stomach. Cold sweat ran down your back and dark spots appeared at the edge of your vision. You were the reason Wonpil changed his behaviour. You were the reason he toned down his personality.
Wonpil immediately noticed the distant look in your eyes and how your stance shifted slightly. He knew if he wouldn’t get you back, you would bolt out of the room and any progress the two of you made over the first week would have been gone again.
“Y/N”, he spoke softly and stepped closer to you, moving into your line of sight, “it’s alright. You did nothing wrong. I want you to feel comfortable around me. Maybe you can tell me what might help you.” Ever so carefully he pried your hands open. “It’s going to be a long journey but I just know we can do it.”
It took you several minutes before you were able to focus on Wonpil again, blinking a few times as well. It took you even longer until your brain finally registered what Wonpil had said to you. Yet you couldn’t form a single word as an answer. You inhaled shakily, feeling the tears brim at the corners of your eyes.
Wonpil rubbed his thumbs over the back of your hands in a calming manner. “How about we sit down on the couch and take some time doing nothing at all together?” He waited for the faintest of nods from you before he guided you towards the living room.
The second your body hit the cushions all the energy in your body evaporated. You basically melted onto the couch and just closed your eyes, feeling way too exhausted.
Wonpil sat down next to you, still holding one of your hands and caressing the back of your hand. His tail wagged gently when you rested your head on his shoulder with a soft sigh.
“I’m sorry.”
“There’s nothing to apologise for”, Wonpil reassured you, easing more into the couch as well. “We can’t change who we are from one day to the next. It’s a process, which will take quite some time. I don’t expect you to embrace me with open arms just after a week of living together.”
You rubbed your free hand over your face, wiping away a few stray tears. “It’s frustrating. You’re doing so much and I… I don’t do anything.” Without receiving an answer you continued ranting about the struggles your mind gave you each and every day. “I just want to be normal”, you cried in the end.
“You’re doing way more than you’re giving yourself credit for”, Wonpil told you and squeezed your hand comfortingly. “You just opened up to me, Y/N. That wouldn’t have happened a week ago.”
“I just dumped a truckload of frustrations on you.”
Wonpil chuckled softly and shook his head. “I might agree with you that the frustrations were the reason for you to open up but I don’t think you dumped anything on me. I’m here to help you, to listen to you, to share your worries and fears. And as you can hear-” he pointed at his rapidly wagging tail “- I’m extremely happy with this situation.”
This made you snicker as well, hiding your face into Wonpil’s shoulder. The tip of your tail flicked from side to side, indicating the racing thoughts within your mind. Yet Wonpil’s presence so close next to you, kept your worries at bay.
“I’m scared”, you whispered after a while, curling more into Wonpil’s side as if you wanted to hide away. “But I’m also excited.” You sighed and glanced upwards to see Wonpil’s bright smile, making yourself smile as well. “I think your unshakable positivity makes me excited for what is to come.”
Wonpil nodded slowly. “I feel the same way. The trust you’re showing me makes me excited to see what the future holds.”

mingyu x reader (fluff, hurt/comfort?, non-idol!au)
wc: 1.3k
a writing exercise i did with a friend using this prompt list and the prompts "when we first fell in love all of those years ago, your father would say i was too sweet for my own good. maybe he was right." and "i'm the one you've been looking for."
a/n: thanks everyone for being patient with me, i'm still working on some big projects (vampire!DPR Ian and also vampire!BamBam [same universe], vampire!Jun, part 2 of river god!Wonpil, a Wonwoo fic based loosely on Kiki's Delivery Service... send help) in the works but wanted to post a little something <3
As soon as you get into your apartment's living room, you flop onto the couch on your stomach, paying no mind to the makeup you're probably smudging onto the throw pillow. Now just isn't the time. Future you can worry about cleaning it.
Familiar footsteps follow you into the living room and a knee gently nudges the side of your stomach; you roll so your back is pressed against the back of the couch and Mingyu can lie down in the remaining space. He settles on his side, facing you with his hand propping up his head. His eyes glimmer slightly, and he gives you a wry smile,
"Well, happy anniversary," he says. You groan and look away from him, pressing your face into the couch cushions. He chuckles at your exaggerated reaction and gently reaches over to start undoing the elaborate updo you'd pinned your hair into.
"What a night," he continues, pulling the bobby pins out one by one. You still refuse to look up, embarrassed and frustrated.
It wasn't like it was anyone's fault, really, that all your evening plans had gone to total shit. First was the unexpected downpour that ruined your plans of a nice walk before dinner forcing you to frantically hail a cab while huddled under his expensive suit jacket. You'd already felt apologetic over that, and then your distracted cab driver missed a turn, which you thought was bad enough because you would be late for the reservation at this rate.
But then it had to get worse (because of course it had to get worse) when the cabbie rear-ended another car because they were too busy yelling at someone on the phone. The two of you had to spend another two hours huddled under a shop awning, answering questions for the police officers that came to assess the scene. Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt, but you still cried so much that everyone kept asking if you needed them to call paramedics.
That was part of why you didn't want to look at Mingyu. No doubt your face was a mess, not to mention your hair, which he was now methodically freeing from the style you had spent so long on.
You'd just wanted it to be perfect. You only have one first wedding anniversary, after all. To avoid crying more, you keep your face pressed into the cushions, not responding to your husband. More gently, then, he asks,
"Hey, you're sure you're okay, right?" You sniffle. Goddamnit.
"Yeah," you croak. "I just… feel bad." Mingyu chuckles.
"I know, but it isn't your fault," he reassures you. It should make you feel better, but it doesn't. You know Mingyu isn't bothered — this sort of thing doesn't faze him quite like it does you — but you still feel anxious and upset. Is this some kind of warning of impending doom in your relationship? Just the thought makes you feel sick to your stomach.
You finally turn your face again so you can breathe more easily and find Mingyu smiling at you, concern still clear in his eyes. The couch cushion feels rough against your cheek, still a bit sensitive from all the crying and being out in the cold.
"I think we have ramen," Mingyu says. "Should I make some? Are you hungry?" Your lower lip trembles as tears start welling up again, and this time you press your forehead into Mingyu's shoulder to hide your face.
"How are you so calm?" you sputter. "How are you not— not upset?"
"What, upset at you? You didn't do anything. And the driver didn't get away with being reckless, so I don't need to worry about that, either," he says calmly. When you only continue to sniffle pathetically, he changes his approach a bit,
"Or maybe I'm just too nice. I still remember when we first fell in love all of those years ago, your father would say I was too sweet for my own good. Maybe he was right."
You let out an extremely undignified snort and lift your head to look at him.
"As if. My dad never said anything like that," you tease. "Plus, 'all those years ago?' It's not like we met as kids or something. We met in college." Mingyu pouts at you, but his eyes glimmer playfully.
"It sounds so much less romantic when you say that," he whines.
"Well, you've always been the romantic one," you retort, but Mingyu is quick to counter you,
"No, no— I still remember that letter you wrote me when the semester was ending, when you said I was the one you'd been looking for—"
"Shut up!" you cry, placing your hands over his mouth. On top of everything else tonight, you don't want to be reminded of your embarrassing confession via love letter from years ago. You'd been a lovestruck student afraid you would lose your chance forever when you wrote that letter, and certainly hadn't expected that Mingyu had also been harboring a secret crush on you that would lead to marriage. It had been corny and sappy all because you thought you wouldn't see him again! Oh, how your actions had come back to haunt you.
You can feel Mingyu smiling under your palms, and it only makes your face get hotter. Eventually, you remove your hands from his face and snuggle up closer to his chest, pressing your forehead into his shoulder again.
"You're so annoying," you murmur, and you can feel the laughter reverberate through Mingyu's chest as he winds an arm around you.
"But you still married me," he says. You smile. It still gives you butterflies, thinking of Mingyu as your husband, still so fresh a sensation. It's only been a year, after all.
"Yeah," you reply. "I did."
Mingyu holds you for a few minutes, gently combing his fingers through your hair as you calm down. Eventually, he broaches the subject of dinner again, now that it's been hours since you were supposed to have eaten.
"Do you want to shower while I make the ramen?" he asks, and you nod. Mingyu gets up off the couch as you sit up and stretch, noticing the lingering dampness in your hair and dress. A shower definitely sounds nice. You start making your way down the hallway, then turn back to face the living room.
You watch as Mingyu attempts to straighten out his crumpled, damp button-down shirt, and smile to yourself.
"Actually," you start, causing Mingyu to stop what he was doing and look up at you out of curiosity. "Do you… wanna join me? It's our anniversary, after all." You can feel your face warming up, but it's worth the slight embarrassment just to see the surprise on your husband's face. Sometimes he can seem so innocent.
It only takes him a moment to snap out of it though, and cross the living room to meet you in the hallway with a broad grin. He takes your face in his hands and kisses you without hesitation.
"That sounds perfect," he says, practically purring, and you let out a surprised yelp when he suddenly scoops you up bridal style. You throw your arms around his neck and lean against him, giggling. As you look up into his face, all your irritation and upset from earlier melts away. Why should it matter if you went to a fancy restaurant or just ate ramen at home? All you want is to be together — that's why you got married.
As Mingyu sets you down in the bathroom, you keep your arms looped around his neck and give him a kiss of your own.
"Happy first anniversary, Gyu." He smiles that big, toothy grin you love so much, the one that makes him look like a happy puppy.
"Happy anniversary, Y/N. The first of many."
It turns out to be a pretty good night, after all.

You sat with your headphones covering your ears, listening to music and scrolling through Instagram.
You massaged your temple while glaring at the girls hovering around Yoon Dowoon, one of the most popular guys in your class. You continued glaring at them, noticing how Younghyun, one of the other popular ('bad boy') guys in not only your class but your entire school, glared at those same girls.
Before you could get up to confront the Dowoon Fanclub, Younghyun beat you to it:
"Would you people shut up?" One of the girls raised her hand as if she were going to hit him. He shook his head in disbelief, scoffing as Dowoon pushed up from the chair and left the class, his Fanclub not far behind. You sighed, Sungjin and Wonpil who were sitting in front of you turning around in their chairs to look at you.
"What's up with you?" Wonpil asked you, propping his chin on his forearm. You look him over before you took off your headphones.
"What's it to you?" Sungjin laughed, Wonpil elbowing him playfully. You couldn't help but smile at them. They were kinda cute, what could you say?
When the two guys went quiet and you saw Sungjin staring at Eunhi, Jaehyung's childhood best friend. It clicked immediately.
He liked her.
The thought alone made your heart ache painfully. And don't get it wrong, it wasn't because you liked Sungjin. It was just because you knew what he was going through. Biting the inside of your cheek your gaze found its way to Younghyun. Younghyun, who was on his phone and had such a nice side profile and— you shook your head. Get out of your head.
"Is there something on my face?"
Your eyes widened as you heard the familiar voice of Kang Younghyun. You had to swallow nervously, feeling everyone's eyes trained on your face. You were known as the quiet-but-not-to-be-messed-with kid in the class. Most people steered clear of you since you were pretty intimidating with hard stares and looks of dislike. The only people anyone knew you talked to regularly was Wonpil and Sungjin, and on occasion class-clown Jaehyung.
"You just gonna ignore me, then?"
Younghyun turned his phone face-down on his desk. You kept quiet, still staring at him like a kid with their hand stuck in a cookie jar. From out of the corner of your eye, you saw Eunhi get up from her chair. She stood up in front of you, obscuring your figure from Younghyun's fox-like eyes.
"Cut it out, Younghyun." She warned him. You tried to say something but your voice just refused to work. You hated this situation. You knew that Eunhi liked Younghyun. And from what you had noticed recently, Younghyun liked her back. This was why your and Sungjin's situation was so relatable. You both could sympathize for each other.
"Isn't it obvious?" Your head snapped to the side, gaze landing on Dowoon.
"What is?" Younghyun asked him, standing up.
"Don't you dare, Yoon Dowoon." You warned, suddenly having regained your voice. Dowoon smirked, taking a daring step forward. He made eye contact with Younghyun, hands in his pocket.
"She—" before he even had a chance to utter the words, you tackled him down, your hand covering his mouth as you straddled him. You had a hand around his throat, having put it there subconsciously.
"Wow, Y/N. Shouldn't you get a room before showing off your bedroom antics?" Kim Seokjin, the pretty boy of the school said with a smirk. Going red in the face, you sprung up. Dowoon looked shocked, a pink hue tinting his ears as he stared at you open mouthed. You hadn't even realized how Younghyun was staring at you, Wonpil and Sungjin completely speechless.
"Do me next!" Jeon Jungkook called, snickering with his group of friends. Grabbing a book from Sungjin's table you chucked it at Jungkook and his friends. Jungkook ducked, looking at you wide eyed. You turned to Dowoon, pointing at him threateningly.
"Keep your mouth shut or I’ll tell your mom you’re sleeping around."
The class hollered at your comment, Dowoon going pink in the face.
You grabbed your things, rushing out of the room. You bit down on your lip, pushing past Younghyun gently and jogging out. If it wasn't already obvious, that was sure to sell you out. Sungjin glared at Dowoon, pushing past Eunhi and Younghyun to go after you. Younghyun looked over everyone in utter confusion. "What the hell just happened?" He asked as Eunhi turned to look after Sungjin. Did he suddenly like Y/N? Hadn't he confessed to her on the day when she helped Younghyun get away from his dick of a boss? Biting her lip, Eunhi went to sit back next to Jaehyung.
———
You were sitting in the park with Sungjin. It was just past 7pm, and the night breeze was soothing.
"He makes my heart ache..." You sniffled, leaning against his shoulder. Sungjin bit his lower lip. Once again, they were in the same situation.
"I'm so sick and tired of loving him when I know he doesn't love me back..." You cried. Sungjin felt so hopeless. He slowly shifted so that your face was pressed into his shoulder, his shirt slowly getting wet with tears.
Still crying into his shirt, you choked out what you were feeling, not at all aware of Younghyun who was hiding behind a tree in his work clothes:
"I'm alone..." You wailed, clutching at Sungjin's shirt as if it were your lifeline. Younghyun turned to look at you and his heart broke. Slowly. It broke agonizingly slow. "Only the cold night air is by my side." You continued, pressing yourself into Sungjin.
"You have me, Y/N. You have me..." Sungjin soothed, patting your back gently. You cried, your breathing ragged as you held onto Sungjin. Younghyun left soon after that, heading into the convenience store where he was working. When he got there he layed on the counter, phone in hand as he tried his best not to think about you and how you were crying now, and all because of him. He was so dense. How hadn't he realized how Y/N, one of the coldest people he had ever met was so much gentler towards him?—
"Younghyun!" He snapped out of his reverie, looking up to make eye contact with Eunhi.
"Eunhi, hey!" He said with a smile, though he was sure it didn't reach his eyes.
"When do you finish? I saw the park near here is empty. It would be great for some stargazing!"
"Wait, it's empty? Sungjin and Y/N weren't there?" Eunhi looked nervous as she nodded.
"Yeah. I went to say 'hi' but Y/N suddenly got up and left. And she took Sungjin with her before I could even say 'hello'. She looked upset..." Eunhi muttered, trailing off as she realized that Younghyun wasn't listening anymore.
"I don't think I can go tonight. Some other time, maybe?" He asked, distracted with whatever he was thinking about.
"Uh, yeah.. Sure."
When Younghyun left that night, he finally realized something... He screwed up big time.
———
You entered the classroom that morning, hand in hand with Sungjin and a tired smile on your face. When you sat down the class hollered, Wonpil looking at the two of you with a smile.
"What'd I miss?" He asked. You shook your head, letting go of Sungjin's hand reluctantly.
"I think I've finally gotten over him." You said quietly. Sungjin smiled at you and you smiled back. Deep down you knew you weren't over him. Sungjin knew that too. But you two could work through the pain together. You yelped as you were dragged out of the room by your wrist. You turned around to confront them but your voice died in your throat at the sight of Younghyun so up close and personal. Your heart was beating in the back of your throat. His hands were soft against your skin and—
"I need to talk to you." He said, his voice sending shivers down your spine. As he continued pulling you along, he was stopped when Sungjin grabbed his arm tightly.
"What do you think you're doing?" He said.
The tension was thick enough to suffocate you. Younghyun glared at Sungjin, quite a bit taller than him. He stepped closer. "Get your hands off of me." He snarled. You gently took Sungjin's hand from Younghyun's arm, looking at him.
"He's—" You cleared your throat, willing your voice to go higher than a whisper.
"We're just going to talk." You assured him gently. Younghyun felt the jealously welling in his chest with how gentle you were with Sungjin. Sungjin let him go slowly, glaring at him warningly. Younghyun stared at him as he took you away.
Standing outside, you leaned against the wall and watched him nervously. You swallowed the lump in your throat as he stared you down, hands in his pockets.
"Is there something on my face?" You quoted him, a nervous smile on your face as he chuckled.
"Cute..." He muttered. Jaw dropping, you looked at him in complete shock.
"Did you just...?"
"Uh. Listen, Y/N. I uh.. saw you, last night. With Sungjin."
You went silent immediately. That means he...
"You saw me break down didn't you..." You looked down. He pitied you. You're never meeting him like this again.
"Pity. I have to go." You said, voice breaking near the end. Before you could though, Younghyun put his hands on either side of you, efficienctly confining you. Your heart was beating so quickly you were sure that you would faint soon.
"It's not that, Y/N. I just... I realized that instead of trying to avoid my feelings for you and leading Eunhi on—"
"You.. You what?" You asked completely blanking out.
"I like you, Y/N. I just couldn't find the confidence to tell you—" before he could finish you cupped his cheeks, effectively shutting him up.
With no afterthought, you brought him closer, standing on your toes and bringing your lips together. Younghyun was shocked for a moment, but his hand quickly moved to your waist, pulling you closer. After a moment or two more you pulled back and hugged him.
"Thank you for loving me back..." You whispered. Younghyun smiled, hugging you back tightly.
"Always."

mind reading au [youngpil]
WIP day6 fic young k/wonpil
preview:
“What did you just say?” Younghyun asks, over the swooping freefall of his insides. The sound of his own voice, the loud chatter in the restaurant, the sizzle of the meat on the grill between them — all suddenly sound very far away. His skin feels prickly, hot, then cold, then hot again. It feels like a nightmare.
He’s so off kilter it takes him a second to realize Wonpil hadn’t actually spoken out loud.
“Mm?” Wonpil doesn’t seem to notice Younghyun had just read his mind. He’s utterly immersed in looking for the next thing to put on his plate, hands clasped before his chest.
Look up, Younghyun thinks at him.
Of course, Wonpil can’t hear him. After surveying the cluttered table, he finally picks up his glass of beer and stares into it. Tipsy already, going by the pink of his ears.
“Wonpil-ah,” Younghyun says.
“Mm.”
“Look here for a second.”
“Why?” Wonpil asks, but he does. Their eyes meet.
Warmth. That’s what hits him first, square in the chest. It’s familiar, the same kind of warmth Younghyun feels on quiet nights when it’s just the two of them and they get talk about the things they never talk about during the day. But underneath that warmth, there’s a current of prickly dread, mirroring Younghyun’s. A thundering heartbeat. Fear and anticipation mixing into a dizzying sludge. Then comes the vague shape of a thought:
Say it again.
“Wonpil-ah,” Younghyun says instinctively. Wonpil blinks in surprise, eyes quickly flicking away, but not before Younghyun catches that — a flush of pleasure crawling liquid down Wonpil’s spine. The shadow of it fades fast, leaving Younghyun cold.
His arm moves on its own, finding his cup of somaek and raising it. “Cheers.”
“Ah. Cheers,” Wonpil murmurs, biting his lip.
Fuck. Younghyun tilts his head back and downs the glass.
to be continued…

One more Hannie ask for the soul bc... yk why not
Yes, Han always wants a kiss; a big ole smooch if you will... but yk one other habit of his?
Randomly sticking his tongue out.
Now, it's got the little critter on the wheel running my brain going and thinking abt him with just a huge oral fixation; OH PUPPYBOY HANJI (instant thought that popped into my head at that moment oh bother)
Dumb pup who is just eager to please; him eating you out but kicking his legs like so:
(Literally idk how to describe that action, but you get the idea)
~~~
Heyyy, hope alls been well Rin :) i'm getting my first tattoo on the fifth so I'm stoked for that.
I'm personally writing my own larger skz college au that may or may not ever see the light of day (i have not written a single word of it, but the lore building is there) so we are having fun with that lmao
Now... I'm curious (and nosey) if you like any other kpop groups or have some other faves besides the resident babygirls.?
(I can't even make a: "I've never seen Changbin and Me in the same room" joke bc I have been in the same area, lmao; that being said... 👀 who's to say)
thank you for providing for the hannielovers amidst this chan frenzy 🙏 you pointing out how often he sticks his tongue out is an extremely distressing piece of information for me…i fear jisung is never beating the oral fixation allegations
he really is just like a puppy waiting for his treat he lets it hang all the way out, it’s so cute 😭 kicking his feet while eating you out has gotta be the most hannie thing i’ve ever heard in my life oh my god…he gets to satisfy his need to work his mouth and please you in the process!! i think he’d absolutely be the type to get so turned on while giving head that he ends up grinding against the mattress without even realizing it
thank u for checking my dearest pink! it’s been a bit of a busy week but i’m doing well, i hope u are too <3 and a tattoo HELLOO that’s so exciting!! can i ask what ur planning on getting? (if you’d rather keep it private ofc no worries 💗) i hope ur appointment goes as smoothly and painlessly as possible!!
SKZ + Day6 Uni Band AU
Ft. Stray Kids + Day6
Word Count: 2k of bullet points
jaesea: “Maybe best friend!Chan (skz) but like he invites u to be part of this new band he's making?”
A/N: Another old request lol. This fic practically wrote itself! So many details fell right into place, so there are a ton of references to the irl history of the groups which I might make a separate post explaining lol
PROLOGUE: DAY6
WELCOME TO JYP UNIVERSITYYYYYY it even rhymes :)
JYP Uni is mostly an arts university, so the students have their own student-run festival to celebrate everyone’s skills!!
A few years ago, there was a band called Day6 that grew in popularity due to performing at this festival on a whim
Sadly, one of these original performers left b/c he wanted to focus on studies
Then another guy quit the band after he graduated to focus on his job
So the remaining 4 members, Sungjin, Brian Younghyun, Wonpil, and Dowoon, decided to finish up their studies then go pro!!
However, due to studying, sometimes a person or 2 wasn’t able to make it to a performance
Either that or the song they wanted to perform wasn’t possible with only the 4 of them
Additionally, Sungjin and “Young K” decided to work full time after they graduated to save up for their Big Band Plans, which meant that they were often down a bass and guitar for on-campus events
To solve this, they decided to add some other people to the band temporarily!!
These new members were more like collaborators rather than official members
Wonpil and Dowoon would teach them the band’s existing songs, so for many of their fans at uni, it was like a special honour to get to perform with them
During his last year at uni, Dowoon was such a sweet but stressed mentor as the last original one left lmao
Imagine him going around trying to find lil underclassmen to fill in for performances
((ok but wow that would definitely lead him to have a lot of fans,,,, yknow,,, like in the Every Day6 MVs,,,))
After Dowoon graduated, the 4 main members of the band were reunited to go pro and focus on making music!! :’) A happy ending!!
I: 3RACHA
Now THOSE are the legends that Bang Chan has idolized ever since he got accepted into JYP Uni!
Bang Chan is a guy. A guy that happens to be really good at writing music (and guitar)
So his skill landed him the opportunity to perform with the legendary Day6!
(Dowoon and Wonpil had heard of Chan’s music during one of the student music festivals, so they called him up to fill in for Sungjin once)
But since all the original members have since graduated, Day6 isn’t a part of JYP Uni anymore
And thus a gap is left for a new band to rise into!!
With his knowledge gifted to him by Dowoon, Chan decides to start another band!!
He takes rhythm guitar and vocals, but he still needs others to, yknow, make it a band 🤔🤔🤔
lmao I would love to be recruited as a second guitarist, keyboardist, or drummer
The people who witnessed Chan’s performance w/Day6 are like “ooh he’s a good singer, maybe we should see what he does”
So his friends show off their skills to him and he eventually starts getting a band together!!
First he recruits 2 of his closest friends, Jisung and Changbin
I didn’t plan this but it makes so much sense that Chan filled in for Sungjin in the past because it meant he got really good at rhythm guitar
Which means Jisung plays lead guitar (and he does actually play guitar omg) with Changbin taking up drums
The trio performs together for the 1st time at the same music festival that Day6 started at!
They name themselves “3RACHA” after Jisung spilled Sriracha sauce on himself when they went out to lunch to plan for the event
Following their performance, they gain attention for their unique original songs!
Sadly, after about a year of 3RACHA uploading their music online, Changbin has to step back due to time conflicts
Although Changbin’s able to help write their songs, only Chan and Jisung would be performing live like they planned
Chan’s a little discouraged; he’s been trying for so long to get a crew together and is close to finishing up his time at uni
He doesn’t want to cancel their 2nd big performance, but it’ll be hard performing their songs as a duo
So he calls his friends, Day6!
Younghyun in particular had sort of adopted Chan after the latter filled in for Sungjin
So he gives Chan a pep talk and tells him to keep pushing through
As a solution, Younghyun suggests Chan do what Day6 did and give some newbies a chance to perform with 3racha like Day6 did with Chan
II: Srir4cha?
Inspired by his mentors, Chan decides to recruit a young man who enrolled into JYP Uni early: Jeongin!
Jeongin is an amazing singer, but Jisung’s a little confused at first since Chan usually does vocals
However, papa Chan encourages the youngin’ to work on his piano/keyboard skills so he can perform with that too
After a successful first practice to see if he’s a good match, they happily accept Jeongin onto the team!
They also just love to baby him lol he’s their golden child
Hyunjin, another student at JYP Uni, knows about the band that Chan is forming
Although he hears that they’re looking for new members, he doesn’t really want to audition, feeling like other people were better than him
Besides, he’s a dancer, not a musician. What’s he going to do?
However, Hyunjin is always practicing his dance routines in a studio on campus
And whenever it’s empty, he’ll sing to himself!
Chan hears Hyunjin singing and is like “hmmm interesting…”
And after witnessing Hyunjin’s stage presence during a dance performance, he’s like “okay that’s it he’s joining!!”
So Chan approaches Hyunjin and asks him to join the band, at least temporarily, for their next performance
Hyunjin: “??? But I don’t play an instrument??”
Bang Chan: “You dance, right? I’ll teach you drums; since you’re good with dancing on beat, it should be easier for you to pick up”
So Hyunjin learns drums with Chan (and occasionally Changbin’s) mentorship
It seems a little odd to Jisung/Changbin that Chan is just picking random kids who have little to no experience with instruments
Jisung especially is like 😒😒 about Hyunjin replacing Changbin, thinking Chan just brought him on the team because he’s handsome and can get them attention
But 3RACHA (currently a team of 4 and needing a new name) have unwavering faith in Chan’s good judgment
With Hyunjin working hard to catch up to the others and carry the beat, Jisung accepts that Hyunjin does belong on the team
Though they really are a ragtag team of stray kids that Chan pulled together
With a fresh lineup, they boys are able to perform at their 2nd major event under their new name: Stray Kids!!!
III: STRAY KIDS
After the event with Chan, Jisung, Jeongin, and Hyunjin (mirroring Day6 hehe), Changbin’s able to rejoin the band!
Hyunjin’s a little sad he won’t be performing with Stray Kids anymore
But Chan is ofc like “NO you’re one of us now!!” and offers him a permanent spot on the team
Hyunjin: “But what am I going to play now that Changbin’s back on drums?”
Bang Chan: “uhhhh well ok hold up we have some rearranging to do…”
With 5 people in the band now, they have a full house!
Yet they’re somehow still missing a bass guitar…
For their previous 2 performances, they had used a recording of a synth bass that Chan had thrown together with Jeongin’s help
But they kinda have to tackle this problem now
Jisung’s really good at lead guitar, Changbin’s the best at drums out of the 5 of them, and Jeongin already learned many tricks on keyboard
So either Chan or Hyunjin have to take up bass
Hyunjin isn’t super comfortable with learning a new instrument again (he just learned drums, after all)
So Chan—being the multi-talented man he is—takes up bass himself
(It’s not his forte, but it’ll do for now!)
Instead of playing rhythm guitar in Chan’s place, Hyunjin writes a couple songs of his own and takes up lead vocals for their 3rd performance!!
After that performance, a certain Kim Seungmin notices they’re down a rhythm guitarist…
Even though he’s majoring in vocal music, Seungmin decides to teach himself rhythm guitar in hopes that he can join the band
One day, when Seungmin is jamming out, a certain band leader walks in…
…and immediately tries to recruit him LMAO he’s kind of desperate
Now they’ve got a team of 6!
But Chan isn’t having a great time with bass lol rip
Chan, now working on a Master’s degree in Music, has less time for the band
He’s confident in taking more time off now that Hyunjin has taken up lead vocals (and the other members also sing for certain songs)
But the rest of the team is getting really excited to perform at an annual campus music festival which, frankly, Chan doesn’t have the time to practice for
After talking with the team, the consensus is that they really need a (proper) bassist
((LMAO that was like an unintentional pun like. They need an assist. But it’s a bassist LJKFDHLKJS sorry bad joke moving on))
IV: Full House
One of Hyunjin’s fellow dance classmates, Minho, auditions for fun in hopes he can help out
Minho’s part of a dance team that’s also performing at the festival, so he can't perform with them on stage (doesn’t have time to perfect it, basically)
But he knows a bit of bass guitar and offers to play during practices so they can hear the bass parts
Although he isn’t the greatest at it, he’s a good fill-in while Chan focuses on uni
That’s when their angel Felix comes in!!
Chan recognizes Felix from their high school choir, so he knows the kid has got a knack for performing music in there somewhere
So he asks Felix to learn bass for them as a permanent member
Since Chan and Minho are already not the greatest at bass, Felix struggles a bit to learn from them
He gets the hang of it, though, and quickly becomes an expert!
So let’s do a recap:
Bang Chan: vocals, songwriting, arrangement, mostly mia due to uni
Jisung: lead guitar
Jeongin: keyboard/synth
Changbin: drums
Hyunjin: lead vocals, songwriting
Seungmin: rhythm guitar
Felix: bass guitar
So what’s Minho up to?
Turns out, the guy is a natural at drums!! (For the same reason Hyunjin was)
So the crew, the kids, now at max capacity, take this opportunity to rotate which instrument they play for certain songs
With Minho on drums, Changbin’s able to take center stage and sing/rap some songs he wrote for himself
While Hyunjin occasionally switches over to keyboard so Jeongin can have some time in the spotlight to show off those stellar vocals
And they successfully rock their 4th performance at a concert on campus!
Needless to say, Papa Chan is super proud of them :’)) *wipes single tear*
V: Battle of the Bands
For their 5th and biggest appearance yet, the crew signs up for a city-wide Battle of the Bands
(Ahem, Kingdom: Legendary War)
Unfortunately, shortly after they sign up, Hyunjin has some personal issues to deal with and needs to take time off of the team
Needing a lead vocalist again, Chan returns to the band full-time!
He’s finishing up his master’s degree, but manages to make the time to practice
He has always been dedicated, you gotta give him that
They miss Hyunjin’s vocals, but Hyunjin is cheering for them from the sidelines!
AND THEY WIN FIRST PLACE WOOO!!! KINGS FR
With a win under their belt, the band performs together for the rest of the year with more attention than ever
They’re rocking with the big leagues now!
Before Chan graduates, the crew decides to organize one last performance with all 8 of them for their last uni music festival of the year
Chan does lead vocals with Hyunjin (a duet, if you will… Red Lights rock version *cough*)
Meanwhile Minho rotates between extra percussion or other smaller instruments (triangle, maracas, kazoo, harmonica, otamatone, whatever)
Their last performance goes out with a BANG (Chan) and is a huge success!!!
A certain group of alumni, Day6, come back to their old uni to watch lil Bang Channie all grown up with a band of his own :’)))
Even though Chan graduates soon after, he isn’t leaving the band!
No siree those are his kids hello
So the 8 of them work hard to become the next big boy band sensation all together, no matter how many instrument rotations it takes <3
the secret prince's cinderella
huening kai x fem!reader (fluff, royalty!au, historical fantasy!au)
wc: 6k
a/n: hi everyone! so a month or so ago i had a dream i was directing a movie that follows (generally) the plot of this fic. during the aftermath of hurricane helene i had no power or internet or cell service and ended up writing the whole thing in basically two sittings. the bigger projects i have been mentioning for years now are still in the works, including vampire!Bambam, vampire!DPR Ian, part two of dragon/river god!wonpil, etc... these are all monster-sized works that i really am just grinding slowly at amidst my day-to-day life. thanks for your patience and i hope you enjoy this extremely fluffy fic!
When you first meet Kai you think he's just a strange, sort of awkward kid. He wanders into the town square one day and finds where all the kids are kicking around a ball one of the other kids' moms made for all of you to play with, and just kind of… stands there. You can tell he wants in, and as the eldest of the group (by thirteen whole days!) you decide to let him join. Nobody questions your decision — Kai evens out the teams for boys against girls for your games.
Even if you weren't the eldest in your group, you're sure you could've pulled strings to let Kai in if you'd had to, but you probably wouldn't have had to anyways. With his ethereally good looks, the other kids were already captivated by him. It didn't matter that he was awkward, he was pretty. You knew how powerful that could be, given that your mom was the prettiest lady in town.
So, your friendship with Kai began like that. Teaching him how to properly kick a ball so that he didn't hurt his foot; showing him the berry patches that were safe to pick from on the outskirts of the farms and forests; scouring the creeks to find the perfect stones to skip. It was idyllic, sitting in the meadow in the shadow of the big, tall castle on the hill where you all pondered what might be going on so far out of your reach.
You never even imagined what it might become in the future — what fate you had started spinning as you kicked that homemade ball over to him and made the circle of kids part to make him a space.
It’s going to be a sweltering summer, your mother had told you that morning, as you carefully braided her hair. Your mother has beautiful hair, a strawberry blond that almost glows pink in the sunlight and fair skin without a blemish. How she manages to be so pretty, you’ll never know — you inherited her eyes but not much else, though you like to think you have some of her charisma, too.
Your mother had also told you to be careful, and to not be home late, planting kisses on both of your cheeks and your forehead before making her way to work. You once heard that she could've become some lord's lover in the past, but she came here with your father instead. She works as a seamstress for the palace, setting off early every morning before the sun rises to make her way up the hill. Your father works in the blacksmith's shop. You’re almost old enough to work, but, for now, do odd jobs with the other kids and help keep the little garden in your backyard alive.
Alongside Kai, of course. He had been completely clueless about plants before you showed him the garden, and then he became obsessed. You know it’s only a matter of time before he comes knocking at your door to go stare at the sprouts, wondering each day at any little change in them.
Just as you finish braiding your own hair, there comes a familiar, rhythmic knock at your door. You don't even have to look to know it's Kai, so you pull it open without a second thought.
"How are the potatoes?" he asks, cheeks flushed.
"The same as yesterday. Did you run here?"
"Of course," he replies, walking purposefully through your house and right out the back door. "I'm sure it had another sprout growing yesterday, so it probably has leaves today."
"Kai," you sigh, trailing behind him. No matter how often you tell him that plants don't grow quite that fast, he never stops being so excitable. You decide to just let him go look at them like you always do. It's kind of cute, anyways — a thought you try to push aside. Kai is your friend first and foremost, and the fact that his teenage years had only added to his incredible beauty shouldn't — wouldn’t — change that.
Also, you know next to nothing about him, really. He keeps where he lives a secret and never talks about his family outside of vague statements about their personalities. What you know about Kai is what he's willing to share, meanwhile he knows almost everything about you and your life in this village. You don’t take it personally; his friendship means too much to you for you to go breaking it by prying too much.
"It looks like the tomatoes are wilting," he laments, his voice breaking you out of your thoughts.
"Really?" You go squat beside him among the little rows and look at the leaves he's gently cradling in one hand. They still look green to you, just fine, but Kai’s brow is still creased with deep concern. You chuckle softly.
"I think they're okay, Kai," you reassure him, patting his shoulder. It strikes you just how broad his shoulders are, and you push the thought away.
"You worry about the plants like you're their overbearing mother," you tease, nudging him with your elbow. He sways, letting go of the tomato plant and using one hand to prop himself up so he doesn't fall. Something falls out of his pocket with a dull thud into the dirt, and you snatch it up before he can.
It's a rock, an almost perfectly round gray one with a little face drawn on it with charcoal from a fire. The face has been redrawn multiple times, but always the same little smile. You can't help but laugh,
"You still have this?" Kai's cheeks turn faintly pink as he reaches out to take the rock from you. You hand it back to him, although you don’t really get why he holds it so gingerly.
"It's special," he replies, a little sullen.
"It's a rock," you state. For the life of you, you can't understand why he's so sentimental over rocks and vegetables in the garden, but makes no fuss over the fancy fabric scraps or broken bits of jewelry your mom gets to bring home sometimes. You find those much more fascinating, especially the fabric, as your mother explains how much time each embroidered design takes.
"It's not just any rock," he retorts, now indignant as he cradles the rock in his palm. He holds it up to your face as though to prove a point. "We found this when you were teaching me how to skip stones!"
You blink in confusion, looking between him and the rock.
"Kai, that rock wouldn't skip even once. It's too heavy. You just liked how it looked!"
You still remember that day vividly yourself. The whole little group had gone down to the creek to practice skipping stones. Your grandmother had been very good at it before she passed away, and taught you how to do it on the days when she watched over you while your parents worked. Teaching other kids wasn't nearly as easy — Kai was the only one truly paying attention to what you said, his eyes earnestly fixed on you as you demonstrated how to find a good rock for skipping and how exactly to flick your wrist when throwing. That rock he now held was one you had picked up to demonstrate a bad skipping stone, but Kai had gone running into the water to retrieve it just after it landed.
"Look how perfect it is!" he had exclaimed, making his way back to the shore with the stone triumphantly held up in his hands. Some of the other kids had conceded his point, and even you could acknowledge that it was a surprisingly round, symmetrical rock — though hardly worth his pants getting soaking wet over.
Still, to keep it all these years and draw its face back on every time it rubbed off…
You almost say something about it being weird, but the fondness on his face as he looks at the rock reminds you of the ratty rabbit doll you repair every time she has a rip or tear. She barely looks like she did when your mom first made her from fabric scraps, but she's too sentimental for you to let fall apart. If Kai's rock is weird, then your bunny would be just the same.
"Didn't you name it?" you ask instead, a vague memory attempting to rise in your mind.
"Yeah, it's Huenin Lionel Mbappe!" he replies proudly. He starts to say something else, but the chiming of the bell at the town square interrupts him. He quickly shoves Huenin Lionel Mbappe back into his pocket and stands up, offering you a hand. You don't need it, but you take it, surprised as always at how smooth his hands are. There are some calluses, but not nearly as many as your father and some of the other working men and boys in the village. Once again you wonder what he does when he's not with you, but you don't dwell on it, pretending you don't notice that he's still holding your hand as you run to the square together to meet up with the others.
You're just glad he can't see how flustered you are as he squeezes your palm, pulling you along.
Working with the other teens in the village often entails doing small tasks the apprentices and owners of different businesses don't have time to. Running deliveries, cleaning up a mess — little jobs for meager amounts of money. Being the eldest, you're the closest to picking a trade, but you think you'll likely just be like your mom. You already know how to sew pretty well from being taught by her, and you do odd mending jobs for other villagers in a pinch. The other kids you run with have been trying to forge connections at the businesses you help, testing the waters for a potential apprenticeship.
Not Kai, though. While he seems interested in almost everything, he doesn't put himself forward as a hirable option for anyone. He also rarely takes a share of the earnings — you'd learned years earlier that he would secretly pass it all off in small bits to each of you, making different excuses each time until he had none left. You don't ask why and you don't tell him or the others you've caught on. Like your own potentially blossoming feelings, it feels like the mention of it could ruin what you and Kai have now, and you value that too much to jeopardize it.
"Y/N, your dad said a couple of us should get more water for the blacksmiths from the river," one of the boys says as you and Kai approach. You brush flyaway strands of hair away from your face, quickly slipping your hand out of Kai’s grasp before the others notice.
"Okay, I think some of the ladies in the market have errands for us too. Should we split up for now?" you ask, and everyone in the group agrees. You expect Kai to go with some of the boys who start making their way down to the river, buckets in hand, but he lingers by your side as the rest of you head towards the market square.
For some reason, Kai seems to be sticking especially close to you. He accompanies you on more of your errands, only taking on his own if someone calls him over specifically. Even then, he makes his way back to you as soon as he can, dutifully trailing behind you.
"You're like a duckling," you tell him as the two of you make your way back out onto the street. You count the coins in your palm and only shoot him a short sidelong glance when he drops his share into your pocket, trying to be stealthy.
"What do you mean?" he asks, sidling up beside you.
"The way you're trailing me," you explain, dropping the rest of your coins into your pocket where they clink against the ones he left. He cringes slightly, knowing he's been caught, but you don't say anything about it. "It's like I'm a mother duck and you're a duckling, following right behind me."
"Hm," he hums, hands clasped behind his back. "Does that also mean I'm cute like a duckling?"
He's smiling at you almost smugly, like he's expecting a compliment. Your heart flutters at the sight, and you wonder if you'll ever get used to just how handsome he is. Pushing the thought aside, you nudge him with your elbow, snorting,
"Helpless, more like." Kai laughs and knocks right back into you,
"You're right, I'm hopeless. What would I do without you?" His words catch you off guard, and you clear your throat to cover your embarrassment.
"Who taught you to talk like that?" you tease, and his grin widens.
"My dad told me I should be sweet to the girls in my life. Especially the really important ones. And the ones I really like."
Which of those am I? you wonder, but the words get stuck in your throat. You and Kai stare wordlessly at each other for a moment, and you feel as though you're getting pulled in by his sparkling eyes—
"Kai! Can you come help me with this?" You both startle at the voice of another vendor, and you poke his shoulder.
"You should go help them. I'm going to ask around for more errands." Kai nods, and you can't tell if you're imagining the disappointment in his eyes as he turns away.
The day ends the same place it started — Kai walks you back to your house to check on the garden again before you start dinner. You stay in the kitchen and tie on your apron, pulling out your paring knife so you can start peeling potatoes and carrots. While he looks to see if there's anything to be gathered, you light the fire under the large pot hanging in the fireplace and dump the bucket of well water you had brought with you in. Kai comes back through the door with a small basket tucked under his arm as you pull your chair up by the fire, settling down to start peeling.
"Can I help?" he asks. It's not an unusual request, but one you're not sure if you'll allow. Kai isn't always the best with a knife, prone to getting distracted as the two of you talk. The last thing you want is for him to slice his finger open, but you find yourself nodding anyway.
"Okay, but be careful. Can you start on the carrots?" You feel safer about him peeling carrots than potatoes, and he acquiesces, pulling another chair up beside you.
The crackling of the fire fills the room, the sound of peels hitting the bottom of the buckets barely audible. Eventually you start humming, a habit you picked up from your father, and Kai joins in on the tune. You glance at him to be sure he isn't distracted and are pleased to find him peeling the carrots successfully.
"Oh, wait, Y/N!" he exclaims a few moments later, almost making you slice off a large chunk of perfectly good potato. You look over to him as he sets his knife on his lap and picks up a carrot. He holds the tip in his left hand and raises it to about his shoulder, the bottom of the carrot pointing diagonally at his right hip, and raises his other hand.
"Doo dwang dee dwang~ Dow dow da dow-da-da-dow~"
You stare on in mute disbelief as he continues, tapping his fingers along the tip of the carrot, making a strumming motion with his other hand at its wide end. He eventually stops and beams at you, an expectant look in his eyes.
"So, what do you think? Did I sound like a lute?"
"That was a lute?" You almost feel bad for asking, but really, you wouldn't have ever guessed.
"Huh," he says, looking down at the carrot in his hand. "My mom liked my impression."
"Moms are like that," you reply. "My mom once told me I had a nice singing voice and then I embarrassed myself in front of half the village kids."
Kai seems a little puzzled by this, as though he hadn't considered his mom might just be saying that because he's her son. Regardless, he shrugs it off and picks his knife back up.
"I'll just have to practice more."
You don't say another word and just go back to peeling and humming. Kai leaves when the bell rings on the hour, and you continue cooking dinner as your parents make their way home in the twilight of the village.
You don't see Kai for the next few days — not that it worries you. Honestly, you don't know what he does or where he is most of the time, but it's fine. You go about your usual routine, until it's interrupted by an unusual tolling of the bell, the kind that signals for villagers to come to the main square for news. You set aside your sewing and rush out to meet your friends there, spotting your father on the edges of the crowd with his coworkers from the smithy. As you gather, you see some sort of palace official with the royal guard behind him preparing to speak. He unfurls his message and clears his throat loudly; the crowd instantly hushes. Your heart beats loudly in your ears, worrying over whether the news is good or bad and your mom working inside the palace.
"Hear ye, hear ye— to celebrate the joyous occasion of Prince Kai Kamal Huening's eighteenth birthday, all citizens are invited to attend a ball at the royal palace, Saturday fortnight! Be prepared to eat, drink, and be merry!"
A birthday banquet at the palace with everyone invited? you think. Then, Kai almost named his pet rock like a member of the royal family?
You wish he was there so you could get his reaction, but instead you turn to your other excited friends. All you can think of is what you could possibly wear to the palace of all places, and with only two weeks to prepare.
Not seeing Kai for a few days is normal, but not seeing him for two weeks is strange. He had shown up at your home out of breath the afternoon of the ball announcement, asking if you'd heard the news, only to run back home just as quickly after checking on the garden. Your mother had rushed home that evening with a roll of fabric in her arms, exclaiming that her coworkers knew she had a daughter around the prince's age and let her take the last of an old bolster home. It wouldn't make much, maybe sleeves or the bodice of a gown, but it was beautiful. It was leftover from some drapes in a far wing of the palace, a plush blue velvet with golden-threaded embroidery.
"You'll look splendid," your mother had said, positively beaming as she held the fabric up to your chest. You didn't bother telling her that there was next to no chance of you dancing with the prince no matter how pretty your dress was, but thought better of it. Besides, it's not like you weren't excited at the prospect of dancing — just not with some total stranger like the prince. The image of Kai smiling broadly when you said that you would be attending the ball rose to the forefront of your mind.
Pushing it aside, you and your mother had begun working on your gown. Now, with the ball only days away, you hadn't seen even a glimpse of Kai in all that time. You'd wanted to show him the fabric, but with it almost finished you want the final look to be a surprise to everyone but you and your mother. With each day you don't see him, worry weighs more heavily on your heart. Nobody in the village knows Kai better than you, so if something had happened then nobody would even know where to start looking for him. You (and your friends) tell yourself to calm down. He always turns up, so you just have to be patient.
You stare down at the potato plants in the garden forlornly, looking at how some of the leaves are beginning to turn just the slightest bit brown as autumn begins to descend. You imagine Kai's worried face and let out a sigh. You just hope he's alright, wherever he is.
On the morning of the ball, everyone in the village wakes up excited. There's no real work to be done that day, as the palace had ordered most businesses to halt operations unless absolutely necessary. Your father scrubs his hands and face (with your mother's help) until his skin doesn't have even the slightest speck of soot on it. You help your mother braid her beautiful hair into a pretty crown on her head, and she helps you into your brand new dress. Slowly, the villagers start making their way up the hill to the palace; you walk behind your parents, who walk arm-in-arm, chatting happily. You wonder how long it's been since they've been able to spend a day together like this, or seen each other all dressed up. The thought of seeing Kai in a fancy outfit makes your heart pound; he's so pretty even in the simplest work clothes, how much more attractive will he look in party attire?
You try not to dwell on it, not wanting to be even more nervous than you already are. Instead you focus on all the familiar faces around you, dressed in their absolute best and chattering excitedly. You aren't sure exactly where your friends are because you came with your parents, but you know you'll all find each other eventually. When you reach the palace gates, you're greeted by members of the royal knights and other official-looking personnel. Your mother points out the people she recognizes, whispering to you and your father who the chamberlain is, and the butler, and the marshal. You lose track of all the people as you're led into the ballroom and are astounded by its grandeur. You've never seen so many candles in one place, or so much food and wine.
"I'm going to find my friends," you announce, still half in a daze. You do try to find them but also end up wandering around the room, in awe of everything around you. Even the drapes in this room put the fabric your mom brought home to shame — is it because it's a big event, or had that fabric been for drapes in some unimportant room. You finally catch sight of a couple of your friends, but as you make your way to them you're interrupted by the sound of a bugle. The whole crowd turns their attention to the raised platform where the two large thrones sit alongside three smaller thrones that you assume are for the two princesses and the prince.
"Now announcing the arrival of the His and Her Majesties, the Sun and Moon of the kingdom!" Everyone drops into a bow or curtsy as the royal couple enters, and you glance up through your eyelashes to get a glimpse of them. You're surprised by just how stunning they appear, and how kind their smiles look. They stand in front of their thrones and look off to the side as their children’s entrances are announced,
"Princess Lea Navvab Huening!" She enters with a smile and a graceful wave, her dark brown hair pulled back neatly. She looks almost familiar, though you wonder if it's just because she's standing beside her parents.
"The Prince, Kai Kamal Huening!" The entire crowd goes even more quiet, excited to get a glimpse of the man of the hour. Your breath catches in your throat when you see him, and you have to rush to lower your head so you don't seem disrespectful.
That… that’s your Kai, isn't it? Up there on the platform? Your head is spinning, and you barely hear the announcement of the youngest royal sibling, Princess Bahiyyih Jaleh Huening. She's beautiful, too — the whole trio is stunning as they stand beside their parents, but you can scarcely think with the way your heart is racing. This whole time, your Kai was actually Prince Kai? You swear it can't be true, then look back at the royal family as the King and Queen descend for the first dance of the night and know you're right. It's him.
You barely see the first dance, but when the Prince and first Princess descend for the second dance you're hyper-focused. Once he's on the dance floor you truly can't deny it anymore.
You can't decide what to do. A part of you wants to run and hide, embarrassed and, frankly, scared that you had treated a member of the royal family like any other village child. How could you be so stupid? How could you not know? You try to slink away to the furthest edges of the crowd as Prince Kai has the third dance with the second princess, wondering if you can somehow get away without being noticed by him.
But then they announce that the ball has started in earnest. The King and Queen take their seats, as well as the princesses, and you watch Kai scan the crowd in search of a partner for his first dance with someone who isn't his sister. You step behind one of your father's coworkers, an exceedingly tall man, but you're shocked when the crowd suddenly starts parting in front of you almost immediately.
"Y/N?" a familiar voice calls, soft. You swear your heart stops in that moment. The man steps aside to reveal Kai, the light making the golden crown on his head seem like a halo.
"Can I have this dance?"
Everyone is staring at you and Kai with the same sense of disbelief that you're feeling. The same boy they'd had running errands a mere two weeks before was the prince of their kingdom, and now he was asking the girl he'd run around the village with for years to be his dance partner.
"I— um, are you sure about this?" you whisper, looking from his face to his outstretched hand and back. You know what this looks like, what this implies. After all, celebrating his birthday like this is also to remind everyone that he's an adult of marriageable age now — does he really want to imply that you're his first choice?
But Kai just continues to smile, albeit looking a little bit more confused.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I be?"
So, you take his hand.
You've never slow danced with anyone but your father at home, and even then it was just for fun; your dancing at festivals was never so regimented. Kai guides your hands to their proper placements and squeezes the one he holds, flashing you a reassuring grin.
"I've got you. Just follow my lead." It feels like your heart has leapt up into your throat, so you can only manage to nod and put your trust in him like he said.
And he guides you. You never would have guessed he was such a skilled dancer, but it's so easy to follow his lead that you're able to actually enjoy yourself more than worry about how you look. His hands are warm and his gaze is so fond, so tender, that you almost can't believe it's you he's looking at. As you fall into a comfortable rhythm, Kai leans in closer.
"You look beautiful," he murmurs, his lips almost brushing against your ear. A shiver runs down your spine, but you don't think anyone but him notices. It only makes him smile more when you stare at him in bashful disbelief. When he said his dad told him to say sweet things, that was the King, right? That realization just sends you reeling further.
You stare at him, not sure what to say to that aside from a barely audible,
"You too." Kai blushes, his cheeks turning a rosy pink that makes him look even more angelic.
"So am I an important girl or a girl that you like?" you ask, not really meaning to say anything at all and certainly not something so embarrassing. Kai looks taken aback, his eyes widening like a deer's. Somehow his cuteness makes you feel embarrassed, but you try not to show it.
"Both?" he says. "I think it can be both. So, both." He smiles, satisfied with his answer.
"You like me?" you squeak out, and Kai cocks his head to the side.
"Yeah? I thought that was obvious. Everyone else knew."
"Everyone else knew?" you parrot in disbelief, and Kai nods.
"I guess I'm the only one they teased about it…" You can't help but laugh a little at that; none of the other neighborhood kids ever gave you much shit since you were their unofficial leader. That said, you're definitely going to have to grill them about this later.
Kai pulls you slightly closer as the song comes to an end, before you part to bow and curtsy to each other.
"Can I have the next dance, too?" he asks, looking down at you with the most doe-like eyes he can manage. You press a hand to your chest, where your heart is still pounding.
"I think I need to sit down before I have a heart attack. This was a lot to take in." You take the hand Kai offers you, though, as he escorts you over to a chair.
"I'll get you something to drink," he says, and he's gone before you can even protest that a servant could probably just bring a tray around. He's still your Kai, after all, you think, and it makes you feel relieved.
As you're sitting waiting for him you notice how many eyes are on you. None are judgmental, thankfully — most are just in awe, both that Kai is actually the Prince and you suddenly seem in line to become a part of the royal family yourself. The mere thought makes your cheeks start to burn again, and you wave your hands by your face to try and cool down.
As you're doing so, you suddenly notice the crowd parting towards you again, this time to allow the two princesses to approach. You hurriedly stand up and drop into a curtsy,
"My humblest greetings to your highnesses, the first and second princess." Your hands are shaking but you hope they don't notice as you hold your skirts up.
"Is this her?" the second princess, Bahiyyih, whispers to her sister. You glance up just as the first princess elbows her before turning to you with a smile. She takes both your hands in hers.
"What she means is, we've heard a lot about you. And Kai has gotten in a lot of trouble for sneaking out all the time, but we get it now." You swear your face gets warmer with every word she says, made worse by the effervescent grin on Bahiyyih's face as she nods along to her sister's words. Just then, Kai reappears by your side, a drink in each hand. Lea lets go of your hands, which you're grateful for because you feel like your palms are getting sweaty.
"Lea…" He whines, shifting so he's standing behind you even though you don't hide him very well. You reach for your drink, hoping that having something to hold will ease your shakiness.
"It's true!" Bahiyyih chimes in. "It took us forever to figure out where he was going, and then we realized he was going to meet a girl! It's so cute!"
"Please don't call me cute," he groans.
"But you are cute," you blurt, and immediately want the ground to swallow you whole. A glance at Kai tells you his face is bright red, burning hot just like yours, and Lea squeezes your hands tighter as she and Bahiyyih practically squeal with delight.
“So you do think I'm cute?” Kai asks, leaning around to get a look at your face. Now both he and the princesses are looking at you expectantly, and you feel like your face is on fire.
“Well, yeah,” you mumble, quickly taking a sip of your drink. The princesses are almost vibrating with excitement, and Kai’s face turns bright red but his eyes are glimmering with excitement, his smile broad. His joy is almost blinding, and your heart is nearly beating out of your chest.
“I think you're cute, too, Y/N,” he says. Your knees feel weak, and you only manage to pull your gaze from his when you faintly hear the sound of Bahiyyih giggling. Lea takes hold of her little sister’s arm and smiles apologetically at you,
“We'll give you two some time alone now.” She starts tugging Bahiyyih away, but the youngest Huening sibling takes hold of your hand.
“I can't wait to get to know you better, sister-in-law!”
“Uh, y-yes, me too,” you reply, mind going blank. Sister-in-law?! In a daze, you sit back down in the chair Kai had led you to earlier, barely registering that he's sitting next to you until he sets his hand on top of yours.
“Are you okay?” You turn to him, mouth slightly agape.
“Did she call me sister-in-law?” you ask. Kai laughs bashfully and links his fingers with yours, giving your hand a reassuring squeeze.
“Yeah, she's… excitable.” You nod, still sort of dazed, and take another sip of your drink. Staring back out into the crowd, you notice the princesses making their way back up to their parents’ side. In the distance you can see Bahiyyih leaning in to whisper something to her mother, and the queen's gaze seems to find you in the sea of people.
“Oh my god,” you say, hurriedly turning back to Kai. “Does— do your parents know about me?” He nods.
“I got caught sneaking out and told them everything,” he explains. “This ball was part my idea and part theirs, so I could introduce you to them… Or let them see you, at least.” He must have seen the total anxiety in your expression at the prospect of meeting his parents one-on-one and immediately smooths it over, squeezing your hand again.
“There's no rush,” he reassures you, and looking into his earnest eyes does actually help to calm your nerves. From this close you hardly notice the crown on his head, he just looks like the same boy you've been running around the village with for years. Just Kai.
Your Kai. Just the thought makes your heart soar.
You down the rest of your drink and stand up, Kai’s hand still in yours.
“Do you want to step outside for a bit?” you ask, and Kai nods, setting his own drink aside too before standing up. The two of you make your way onto one of the balconies off the ballroom, and the cool night breeze puts your mind at ease. You feel like you can finally breathe again, standing by Kai’s side under the familiar light of the moon. He lightly swings your joined hands between you, staring up at the stars. Eventually, he turns his full attention back to you,
“Why did you want to come outside?” You take his other hand in yours and look down at the stones paving the bottom of the balcony. His shoes are so nice, you think, and almost want to laugh. All this time you wondered why he was only around some of the time and gave his money to the other kids — meanwhile he was sneaking in and out of the palace to come meet you. You take a deep breath, summoning all your courage,
“I just… thought it would be kind of embarrassing to have our first kiss in front of a crowd…” Kai squeezes your hands unintentionally, and you glance up at him, unable to meet his gaze fully. Even after saying it, you aren't sure where you got the confidence.
“So, can I?” he asks, his voice soft. “Kiss you, I mean.” You laugh, the tension breaking, and lean in.
“You really are hopeless, aren't you?” you tease, “Of course.”
You press your lips to his, the taste of wine still lingering, and you suddenly get the feeling that this is the beginning of the rest of your life. And you're going to live happily ever after.
