Audi R8 V10 Plus
""Created in the world’s toughest development lab: the world of motorsport. We drew on our experiences with motorsport for the development of the Audi R8. For example, the many national and international GT3 titles won by the R8 LMS, including victories at the classic 24-hour races in the Nürburgring, Spa, and Daytona. This means that the Audi R8 Coupé V10 plus* is rooted in the tradition of GT3 racing – and you can feel it the instant you turn on the engine. .""

2020 has been a strange year, there's no denying that and its ramifications will rumble on for (potentially) decades. Lives and economies have been devastated. In the background the WRC promoters tried to run a successful 2020 Driver's and Team's championship. However, the WRC has spent the last 6 months planning events and then cancelling them (through no fault of their own) - the 2020 World Rally Championship promised much, delivered a bit and fizzled out. A lack of clarity has also muddied the waters - will their be a 2020 champion? What were the rules regarding entries in WRC2 and who can or has won that 2020 championship? None of this is a great look for a world championship. Pay-to-view coverage wasn't too well received at points during the year either...
Yet more clouds could be gathering on the horizon.
Mr Adamo and his Hyundai works team have made mention of a potential switch to GT3 racing; only a casual mention but none the less those in the halls of power of the WRC should be concerned. More so that the Toyota Supra is now becoming a more popular GT3 choice too...
GT3 racing is easier to promote (to customers, sponsors and the top hierarchy of the manufacturer's board) and coverage is far, far superior to rallying. The cars (and manufacturers) and instantly recognisable to huge swathes of the public (including those more interested in TikTok videos than racing) and - very importantly - it's a large sales market for cars and parts.
Last weekend saw no less than 56 cars compete in the Total 24 Hours of Spa. Each of these cars was a non-factory, customer car - all built by the factory motorsport division and sold (with a healthy spares package) to race teams who then hurled them round Belgium for 24 hours with varying degrees of success and varying amounts of damage! There are 20 or more international series that GT3 cars compete in (excluding hillclimbs and clubman style, national race series). The market for GT3 race cars is huge, the rewards for a successful manufacturer are equally as huge in terms of publicity and sales!
Amazingly in the first 7 years of sales Audi sold 200 (yes, two hundred) R8 LMS GT3 race cars, Mercedes-Benz AMG a very similar amount and even Lamborghini and Ferrari were pushing near to 100 cars. Virtually all GT3 manufacturers also offer a GT4 car too, many just a lower spec, less costly version of their GT3 car. All these cars are filtering down to lower tier racers who will still need to call the manufacturer for those 'un-obtainium' parts even once the car is out of GT3 homologation.
GT3 cars race at some of the most iconic motorsport venues in the world; Spa, Nürburgring-Nordschleife, Monza, Bathurst, Daytona, Monza, Kylami, Silverstone - the list goes on - except for the Monte Carlo the WRC struggles for iconic events.
Rich amateur drivers are also given ample opportunity to race in GT3 series' with AM and Pro-AM classes allowing the wealthy  and competitive driver a chance to test their mettle against the very best, something unheard of in the WRC for many a long year!
Here at 4M we used to sit watching rallycross thinking that the WRc really needed to focus on keeping manufacturers on the stages and away from that but Hyundai's potential GT3 move could spell and short and sudden downturn for the WRC - especially as GT3 rules appear more stable than the potential chaos of the new WRC rules and the confusion about their implementation date...
COVID has caused large problems for the WRC and that isn't the fault of the championship; it has however highlighted that other championships can, potentially, offer far greater rewards to a manufacturer than a collection of twisty roads and 15 top class cars. Should the WRC be worried? Certainly. Could this be the beginning of the end for the WRC? If Electrification isn't handled very, very carefully I fear it could well be...

Audi R8 LMS Getss First Season Win in Blancpain GT Series
Belgian Audi Club Team WRT scored its first victory this season in round two of the Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe at Misano (Italy). In an Audi R8 LMS, Belgian Audi Sport driver Dries Vanthoor and his compatriot Charles Weerts won in extremely hot weather conditions. Thus, 18-year-old Weerts is the youngest winner in the history of the Blancpain GT Series.
Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, while running in second position, had made perfect use of a safety car period for the driver change from Vanthoor to Weerts and captured the lead. Weerts held up to the pressure from his immediate rivals and safely brought home an advantage of nearly three seconds. For Dries Vanthoor, following his victory with Audi Sport Team Phoenix in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, this marked the 2nd win within the space of one week.
In third, Audi Sport drivers Christopher Haase (Germany) and Simon Gachet (France) from French Team Saintéloc Racing finished on the podium.

Valentino Rossi swaps his Yamaha for an Audi R8 LMS GT3

Retiring from the saddle at the end of the 2021 season did not mean retiring from racing, though. The man…

The Peter Auto teams achieved a remarkable feat at the 8th staging of Spa-Classic by assembling 325 racing cars and 1.200 collector cars with, as a bonus, some superb newcomers. The success of an event held on a circuit is partly based on the organiser’s capacity to inject fresh blood into the spectacle on offer. This is obvious when it comes to races for modern cars, but becomes a real challenge in the domain of historic events where, by definition, the grids are not naturally renewed by the appearance of new models. Even so every year Peter Auto manages to spring a surprise. An example: on Friday an immaculate white Porsche 962 appeared in the Group C Racing paddock to the amazement of specialists. And for good reason: this car (chassis NO/962-174) sold by the factory in 1991 had never been raced! It took more than a quarter of a century to rectify this anomaly! While the competition department knows how to find new models, it can also reinvent the way it perceives historic racing. Thus, the Spa-Classic meeting was the theatre of the maiden event for the new 2.0-Litres Cup, Peter Auto’s first single-make series. Almost 40 drivers in pre-1966 Porsche 911s did battle on a level playing field providing the spectators with some ding-dong battles! And there was more. Spa-Classic also inaugurated the rapprochement between Peter Auto and the promoters of Global Endurance Legends who organise outings for a field comprising GTs and prototypes from the 1990s-2000s. It provided visitors with the opportunity to see, among others, a marvellous Bentley EXP Speed 8 in action identical to the car that won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2003. Note that this grid will again add excitement to the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or in three weeks and then to Le Mans Classic at which more than 70 cars are expected: these will include Audi R8 LMPs, Bentley Speed 8s, Ferrari F40 LMs, McLaren F1 GTRs, Panoz Esperante GTR-1s, Porsche 911 GT1s, etc. In addition to the on-track action provided by the eight grids, spectators could leave the circuit for a few minutes – or a few hours – to feast their eyes on the 1.200 collector cars on display. Among them were iconic and rare vehicles like one of the 455 BMW M1s produced, which had only 3.000 km on the clock, an almost unbelievable figure for a car that’s celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! On Sunday at midday this beautiful exhibition of motor car history was joined by the 205 crews in the Youngtimers Rally who finished their journey at Spa with a parade on the Ardennes roller-coaster. In the Village, the crowd had their fill of excitement with the Wall of Death, a motorbike show. Other activities like Racing Bug, Neo Retro and the exhibitors, scale models, ready-to-wear, books, etc. provided a source of delight for many members of the public.

Second Title for Audi R8 LMS GT4
The Pirelli World Challenge ended in a dream result for Audi Sport customer racing. Three weeks after James Sofronas won the SprintX classification in the Pirelli World Challenge with his teammate, Alex Welch, the driver and team principal of GMG Racing now won the overall GTS title as well. In the finale at Watkins Glen, the Californian Sofronas only had to finish in seventh and sixth position to secure the second title win of the Audi R8 LMS GT4. After 18 single races, his advantage amounted to 29 points. The race car from Audi Sport customer racing in 2018 is contesting its maiden season in customers’ hands.
The Pirelli World Challenge is one of the toughest GT4 competitions worldwide. Eight marques were on the grid in the North American series and as many as 94 drivers, 87 of whom scored points, competed during the course of the year.
