Do not underestimate the role of the pandemic!!!!

It took me about 1 yr to go through all the stages of Harriedom: the phases 1)Heard WS, catchy 2)fell under the spell of his charm and good looks 3)found out about the ships - OMG!!! Zarry intrigued me the most 4) got interested in his personal life 5) found this blog and Wow!!! cannot believe, regardless of opinions on HS expressed, the things I found out that I was not aware of 6)I don't care again.

Basically this timeline goes from March 2020 to March 2021, a yr exactly and I can assure you that Harry is acquired a lot of new fans in March/April 2020.  I have come across lot of people like myself - adult women - who have become/who became big fans. Going back to the points:

1) I am working from home, reduced hours and playing a lot more music than I usually do(because I would be in the office most of the day if it were not for coronavirus) WS is catchy. I love music but really just listen to it as a background to my day. WS is catchy & I contributed to many a stream because, again, it is catchy

2) WS video comes out and another month goes by in lockdown, I am bored out of my mind and start looking through YT... a lot. Because I am listening to WS and FL in general, a lot is appearing in my recommended about HS. I don't even remember 1D in its heyday so I only have a preconceived notion that ugh.. they are a boyband. Vaguely remember seeing pictures of them and thinking, they are not good looking and the one with the long hair looks particularly greasy. My how times change!!!! Late 2014&2015 Harry, is now for me the most attractive (which is problematic given his age at the time). Today's H, not as attractive but, I wouldn't say no if he asked me out.

3) The ships are a big factor in bringing you down the rabbit hole because, if you start looking at those, you get analysis of his songs and then they do not seem as empty or misogynistic because he is talking about men and there are all these metaphors and symbols that change the meanings of the songs into something desperately tragic (I know, I know, I am an idiot but I was/am bored because there is still the pandemic and lockdowns so I really have nothing else to do and this lockdowns are affecting my ability to think).

4) Because one is into the ships, his dating life becomes important because you look for clues. Silly, I know but again.... I am booooored because of the closures.

5) Because I am looking into all things H, this blog appears and wow, the things I find out. The one that STINGS the most is that Stevie Nicks is linked to Azoff. Huuuuuge Stevie Nicks fan here and I am not going to lie, the fact that was always around him, did legitimize him in my eyes. But again, a lot of that happened in 2019 and HS was not on my radar at all but because I am basically a shut-in because of the pandemic, I see all this online. Again, huge Stevie Nicks fan and I did not see notice HS at all (not even at her induction ceremony where HS spoke) until the pandemic gave me nothing else to do. Someone said, teenage girls did not know how things work in the industry so that is why they don't know about the maneuvering but I think a lot of us don't know or don't care so we do not think about that or make those associations. At least I didn't until I read this blog.

So, do not underestimate the coronovirus pandemic in increasing HS's support amongst the gp because there is really nothing else to do and the WS video came out as we were being closed in (and was dedicated to touching) and the name HS was everywhere. A side note, reading posts about the HS1 era, it is incredible to see that a lot of the criticisms & suggestions made in this blog, were applied in this era so the Azoff strategy course correcting worked but again.... don't underestimate the pandemic because I more than likely would have continued to not really pay attention to HS if my life was as it was pre-pandemic, work and actually spending time with people instead of spending 98% of my time online.

An example of modern organisations championing this is Shameless Media. Utilising digital media, Shameless engages with their stakeholders through strategic branding and content marketing.

CASE STUDY: SHAMELESS MEDIA

Profile

Shameless Media (SM) is a millennial gen Z’s destination for all things digital content. Operated in Melbourne by a team of five young women, the company was founded in 2019 by writers Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews.

Although relatively young, the podcast venture has accumulated a consumer base of over 20 million listeners, plus a growing community of 220,000+ followers across Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. SM also recently created a brand-new agency for content creators and influencers, The Sana Agency.

Stakeholders

Since its inception, the podcast has not had a single episode that has not been sponsored (Forbes 2021). More notably, Shameless listenership is overwhelmingly 94.7% women in their 20s (Gillezeau 2021).

SM's key stakeholder groups thus include:

1. Consumers: audiences, readers, listeners; and

2. Sponsors: collaborators, business partners.

1. Podcast

At first glance: Eye-catching cover. Good tag line (“The pop culture podcast for smart people who love dumb stuff”). Almost always seen in the Top Charts.

My thoughts: I was surprised to discover how new the podcast is. Its popularity, large growing number of listeners and content quality make Shameless seem a lot more established.

Open and honest, the hosts are not afraid to let audience knows where they stand on critical issues (feminism, politics, climate change etc.). New episodes are regularly scheduled which is good for audience retention.

As a consumer, I am drawn to the show/company for their seeming authenticity and relatability. Not to mention the well-balanced research that allows audience to form their own opinions without being spoon-fed. 10/10 recommend.

2. Website

At first glance: Layout is easy to look at. Visually appealing. All relevant info seems to be there.

My thoughts: Nice design, but not as much interactivity as I would have liked. When I tried looking for more information on the founders and organisation, something like an About Us section for example, there was none. Neither was there any resource or material on the business side of things (annual reports or data analytics or anything of the sorts).

One may excuse this considering the age of the organisation. However, I believe SM might benefit from a website update or revamp. It will certainly be helpful for those like me who are curious, who do research on the firm and would therefore like more access to information.

3. Instagram

At first glance: Quite large following. Relatively high audience engagement. Content layout not my personal taste, but appealing overall.

My thoughts: Shameless has great social media presence, especially on Instagram. The company made good efforts in interacting with followers. There are the ‘Your say Fridays’, polls and Q&A every other day on Stories. Users regularly comment on posts (memes, podcast updates & announcement), and many get replies from admin.

Overall, Shameless is doing very well with social media engagement and audience interactions.

4. Facebook

At first glance: Not much to see/do as this is a private group. Nice cover image though.

My thoughts: Large community of readers of nearly 34,000 members. The group has been active since 2019. While discussion threads cannot be publicly viewed, those interested in the content can find related episodes on the Shameless podcast.

Over on Instagram, there are links in bio to the book-selling site for each month’s pick. Makes me wonder whether or not these are affiliate links.

5. LinkedIn

At first glance: Small-to-medium sized following. Appealing visuals, though not too much information.

My thoughts: I have seen the Shameless LinkedIn profile before, but has only started following them recently. The account is not too active, the latest post was from a few months ago. Perhaps this is because the content that circulates on LinkedIn often revolves around business culture, not the usual focus by SM. Most of the posts thus far are general announcement and job openings.

In the future, SM might be benefit from a more active LinkedIn page, so as to not only attract new audience and potential talents, but also to establish their presence more firmly among competitors in the corporate world.

DIGITAL STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

The corporate brand is constantly being co-created by organisation with their stakeholders. Dialogical communication is said to enhance this along with corporate reputation (Gundolf et al. 2018; Ozer 2020; Rosenberg & Seager 2017).

In reality, what might this look like?

So far, leveraging social media has helped Shameless achieve their goal and stay true to their brand. “Win their niche, core audience, nurture specific community of mostly young working women” (Gillezeau 2021).

The company’s success is in no small way thanks to the relationship they have with their audience. SM has intimate understandings of what the audience wants, and are able to deliver it.

This is in large part due to the founders being in the same demographics as their audience. As McDonald put it, “[W]e wanted to tap into a younger demographic that we thought were generally being ignored by mainstream media” (Forbes 2021), which explains the company slogan.

“We make content for ourselves, our mates, and you”.

Branding and content wise, SM is doing a good job capitalising on the trends, particularly with interactive content, content marketing, and online content communities (Clark-Keane 2021; Thomson 2019).

Yet, it is also important to note the fortunate position SM finds themselves in. As a millennial start-up, they are already advantaged by having skills in digital media and technologies.

Nonetheless, through forces of strategic digital communication, Shameless Media has been successfully engaging with their stakeholders through a combination of clever branding and content marketing.

The anon post you mention sounds like it is based on DL conspiracy theories and unsubstantiated gossip.

I agree that the anon post you mention seems to have made up out of whole cloth the argument that S has “no pics or history with any woman.” Hello? S has lots of pictures and history with MM, Abbie and Cody. And I DON’T believe any of these women were “beards.” There have been lots of other photos that indicate that S had interludes with other women. (If anyone doubts this, take a look at my Pinterest Board on this topic.)  As was mentioned in an earlier ask, there’s also evidence of a pre-Outlander relationship S had with Katie. 

And what is the anon post talking about in terms of the “removal of most of his filmed and video taped roles online”? I did a quick google search and easily found video clips for: SH Showreel (2012), Young Alexander (2010), First Light (2010), A Plague Over England (2009), Doctors (2009), and A Very British Sex Scandal (2007). 

As for the allegation that he “bleached” his social media, well people forget that social media wasn’t that big until relatively recently--so S probably didn’t have all that much on it to begin with prior to his being cast in Outlander in 2013. For instance, the chart below shows that social media didn’t really take off until after 2010 and for a lot of platforms not until about 2014. 

S didn’t start his Twitter account until July 2011--two years before he was cast in Outlander in July 2013. Instagram didn’t even start as a platform until 2010. I would assume that S started his IG and first FB accounts around the same time as his Twitter account. Two years isn’t a very long time to have a history on social media, especially back in the day when people weren’t as invested in it. I doubt there was much of anything on S’s pre-Outlander SM to “bleach.” I think this is just a DL myth. Maybe he deleted a few things--everyone does. But I doubt he “bleached” his history the way the anon was suggesting. 

Furthermore, it is absurd if the anon is implying that S’s relationship with WS was some sort of a “conspiracy.” I recall they first started their interaction on Twitter by bantering one day about Claire and things took off from there.

Regarding S having a prominent publicist like JA--again, I don’t think there’s any “conspiracy” there. Publicists frequently take on up and coming stars, not just established ones. And she is probably not the one who handles most of his PR at her firm anyway.

So what on earth is this person talking about?

Just more unsubstantiated conspiracy theories. 🙄

Social Media Best Practices for Businesses

It is important to learn how to manage your company’s online presence - especially in a time where everything is just be a click away. For businesses, it is important to maintain a strong online presence to help remain competitive and drive sales as well. It’s also important to tailor your strategy for different platforms (Brand Communities). What works on one platform may not work on others. For example, it’s common to post more frequently on twitter, while that wouldn’t necessarily work for Instagram or Facebook.

While going viral for a campaign is amazing for companies - avoid being the center of an online controversy. Don’t post, share or forward anything that you feel does not represent your company’s interests (Ps, Qs and three Ws: Online Netiquette). An example of a huge social media fail was for Dove, who is usually known for empowering women and focusing on realistic standards of beauty (Egan, 2018). The ad depicts a black women transformed into a white woman after using the Dove body lotion (Egan, 2018).

That ad is offensive, not consistent with Dove’s online voice of empowering women, and is not on message with their brand (Ps, Qs and three Ws: Online Netiquette).

In general, some social media best practices for businesses include (York, 2018):

Defining your network or themes

Your brand voice - consistency is key

Avoiding slang (unless teens are your target demographic)

Researching competitive analysis

Engaging, interacting and humanizing

By following those best practices, you can ensure that you are maintaining a strong online presence while also engaging with your audience in a positive way.

Richard Zorza once wrote that, after his death, he would continue to blog from hell. I would not be surprised if Richard, who died April 13 at the age of 69, is still blogging somewhere, but I am quite certain it isn’t hell.

On my short list of must-read blogs, Richard’s Access to Justice Blog was at the top. Since 2010, he wrote there about access to justice — and about the use of legal technology to enhance access to justice — with the passion and insight that reflected his more than 25 years of advocacy for A2J.

A prolific writer, it was only natural that, when he was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, he started the Richard Zorza’s Health Updates Blog to keep his friends updated on his medical situation. His last post there, on March 31, was poignantly titled, Maybe Moving Towards the End, I Fear.

Two weeks later, his wife Joan Zorza and stepson Arloc Sherman posted news of his death. He wanted everyone to know, they wrote, that he was profoundly thankful to everyone for the support given to him and for the support given to “the many individuals who lack access to justice in a number of ways.”

Richard was a Harvard Law School graduate who devoted his career to public service work. Early in his career, he was a public defender and legal services attorney.
