Tiki Taane - Tangaroa-God Of The Sea (NZ 2013)
Blog post for God Of The Sea by Tiki Taane
This video presents Maori traditional culture to the audiences. From my point of view, it emphasizes the spiritual connection between Maori people and the nature. This is rooted from the Maori culture as Maori people perceive themselves as the Kaitiaki (guardians) of the land, sea and sky (the nature) (New Zealand Tourism, 2019). This spiritual connection is the basis for the identity for tangata whenua (local people) (New Zealand Tourism, 2019). In this video, there are many scenes depicting the man standing on the beach. He shows a kind of peaceful and spiritual mood and feeling. I think this is a way he is feeling the nature and this spiritual connection with the nature, which is important in Maori culture. The main identity position is ethnicity. Maori ethnicity is emphasized through the characters in this video and the activities they are engaging. For example, figure 1 presents the screenshot from the video in which a group of Maori people wear traditional cloths and tattoo, and engages in a ceremonial dance (haka). These salient traditional cultural elements and activities clearly emphasize the Maori ethnicity in this video.

I think the intended audience of this video is Maori people and people living in New Zealand. This is because these Maori cultural elements and traditions may not be familiar with people from other countries or cultures. I have some knowledge about the Maori culture because I am studying in New Zealand. The Maori cultural and spiritual elements presented in this video are quite abstract. For example, the Kaitiaki and the meaning underlying haka and the traditional greeting in Maori culture may not be understood by people who do not have contact with Maori culture before. Thus, I think the intended audience is Maori people and people living in New Zealand in order to promote Maori spirituality and culture.
The stereotypes of Maori people are presented through the portrayal of female and male and the way the Maori culture is presented. One stereotype of Maori male is aggressive, strong and dominant, which has been clearly presented in this video (figure 2). Obesity rate is much higher in Maori ethnic group that 47% of Maori people are obese (Ministry of Health, 2018). The stereotype of Pacific island women is that they are fat. From the video, Maori women are generally over-weighted (figure 3). Maori people in this video are also presented in a more ‘wild’ way. This is not only because they wear traditional cloths and tattoo on their face, but also the men are topless. This video does not show clear position on this stereotyping, while it may use these stereotypes as a way to emphasize Maori culture.

I think this video is a good attempt to present Maori culture though the messages is not clear enough for international audience. In New Zealand, majority of local people may understand the cultural elements and messages, while people from other countries may not understand what this video tries to conveys or what these cultural activities and meaning means. For example, I can imply that the man standing on the beach is to feel the Maori spirituality and the guardianship because I have certain knowledge about Maori culture, but other people may not understand this underlying meaning the video trying to convey. I think it may use simple subtitles or notes to describe the cultural meaning and spirituality underlying these cultural elements and activities in order to overcome this cultural barrier and promote Maori culture to international audience.

Existing Beauty Campaigns
Find 2-3 examples of awareness campaigns+ identify the purpose + objectives, the target audience, the 'call to action'. What are the collateral or touch points? Identify + comment upon the tone, design approach, the success of the campaigns (copywriting, design assets, target audience, relevance et al).

Purpose “The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is a worldwide marketing campaign launched by Unilever in 2004 aiming to build self-confidence in women and young children.”
Target Audience Young Women and young children. This is similar to my campaign as I want to target young girls which is typically the cause of negative body image as they grow older.
Design Approach
1) We always feature real women, never models. Models reflect a narrow view of beauty. Dove believes that beauty is for everyone and therefore features real women of different ages, sizes, ethnicities, hair colour, type or style. • Zero models in our campaigns • Real women introduced by their names • Our campaigns reflect the population’s diversity 2) We portray women as they are in real life. We never present the unachievable, manipulated, flawless images of “perfect” beauty which the use of retouching tools can promote. • Zero digital distortion of women • Image approved by the women we feature This approach effectively reciprocated the main idea of the campaign. Dove Real Beauty has also stuck to a neutral colour palette as they are trying to attract young women.
My campaign is most likely going to be targeted largely toward Gen Z where brighter colours are often more appealing
Success
“The campaign challenged every stereotype in the personal care industry all while resonating with their audience. It was raw and emotional and provoked thought and inspiration among people across the world.”
Campaigns are successful when the message is relevant and the conversation keeps going. Dove nailed it on that note because body and personal image issues have become so apparent in today’s world, especially due to the popularity of photoshop and social media. The Real Beauty conversation is one that will not be ending anytime soon. It elicited a strong emotional response and high shareability rate from viewers, emphasizing the campaign’s major success. The campaign flourished because it connected with the audience in the sense that there is a huge self image problem amongst women. The outcome enabled women to think of beauty in a new and different way; a more positive way, all thanks to Dove.

“Fiona started the campaign by simply asking women to post photos of themselves on Facebook without wearing makeup for cancer awareness. Crucially, she asked them to use the hashtag #nomakeupselfie.”
Target Audience
The target audience was women of all ages.
Design Approach
There was not any specific design system/ approach as the campaign allowed people to post their photos in any way they wanted. The flexibility may have been what made the campaign so successful.
Success
What were the results?
• 826,000 Facebook likes • 140,000 Followers on Twitter • 8 Million raised in donations in 1 week • 10 more clinical trials able to take place
Why did it work?
The success of the #nomakeupselfie was down to a principle known as piggybacking. Piggybacking is the process of using a popular trend to extend the reach of a social media message. For example, Fiona’s original campaign piggybacked off the publicity surrounding Kim Novaks Oscar appearance. Cancer Research piggybacked off the #nomakeupselfie hash tag by launching their own campaign.
The success that followed can be partly attributed to modern cultural trends – women felt they had to wear makeup to be successful. Celebrities started posting their own #nomakupselfies, popular hashtags were piggybacked and used by Cancer Research, posts encouraged participants to be charitable and appealed to people’s higher nature and there were high participation rates because people liked posting about themselves. Finally, the campaign became highly viral as participants nominated friends to post their own #nomakeupselfie.

Survey Design and Feedback
To get a better idea of what we are doing me and Hooryah decided to make a survey on what the current generation felt on cultural diversity. We originally had a total of 20 questions however we felt that So because some people are lazy they may feel 20 questions as too much work to do. So we made it to 10 short answer questions. To get the survey out there I sent out a link on my Facebook and asked my friends to fill out when they have time. Me and Hooryah waited overnight for some survey responses and we got some. The answers that some of my friends filled were good, here is some of the answers from the survey.
What is your cultural background? How has it affected your life till now?
Responses came from Kiwis, NZ European, Indians, Fiji Indian, Chinese Philipino, Pakistanis. “Made me think more about my life decisions and choices. Went through a lot of troubles settling in and fitting in. Life is hard when your parents are accustomed to the Indian culture but you identify more with the New Zealand culture. Parents don’t always accept your views and you don’t accept theirs, vice versa.” - Indian
Have you ever gone through an experience of being treated unfairly because of your ethnicity?
There were an equal amount of Nos and Yeses.
Are there some people you shy away from and why?
“Probably only women who wear full burqa or niqab, because it indicates to me that they’re so culturally conservative we probably wouldn’t get on well.”
“There are but not on the basis of their culture; more of personality.”
This answer was really interesting “ I don’t make friends with Indian people who are still apart of the Indian culture. The way they act, their beliefs etc. remind me too much of judgments passed by Indian people on me for being different. I, however, do get to know the person before I make judgments.” -said by an Indian.
“I would say big Islander people who seem like they would want to start trouble. I guess stereotypes and from school and stuff.”
Do you have any negative thoughts or views on a culture? And why?
“ Every culture without exception has its ups and downs, some with more downs than others. They’re too numerous to list here, but obviously, I do hold negative views towards Muslims who wholly retain their traditions in a conservative manner, it appears contemptuous, moral universalist and close-minded to me for someone to refuse to even slightly adopt the culture of a country you migrate to”

Do you have any friends that are part of a different nationality than you? Yes = What was your reaction and how did it make you feel?
“ Yes. Normal”…“ Yes, never really felt anything because I seldom thought about the difference”… “ Yes, I felt the same as making any other friend”…
“ Yes. I was very interested and it made me want to learn more about their specific nationality and also other nationalities.”
“ Yes, I like hearing about their experiences and taking part in cultural things that matter to them”
“ yes. From a young age mixed with people of different cultural backgrounds. So it was easy for me and I enjoy now meeting people from different cultures.”
“ I didn’t really have a reaction. I don’t really see a difference in having an Indian friend or a white friend. Tbh just question different things about their culture I’m interested in”

“They did not mind, as long as I respected my own culture.” ….. “ Bit stereotype.”

Most said yes, but a few did say no…

“The culture in Auckland is too diverse”… “ Auckland is very diverse”
“ I’m not really sure. From what I’ve seen NZ is mainly Maori, Samoan, nz European, Indian and Chinese.”
“ Auckland is quite possibly the most ethnically diverse place in New Zealand, the rest seems to have only white or Maori people”
“Diversity is everywhere but people are still racist or unaccepting. Auckland is a little worse in terms of including diversity than other parts of NZ.”
“I think we are very diverse but we need to work more on accepting people and their cultures. Recognising racial biases we may have and work towards changing our views on certain cultures.”
“It’s a good start. We still need to work harder as there are many myths and negative beliefs about other cultures.”
Are you willing to learn about a culture? And why?
“Yes and no because nothing really has developed within my upbringing”

What could be done to spread positive awareness about cultures through a digital experience?
“By not talking about it. Just treat others humanely. As they are.”
“ Marketing local cultural events/festivals in a way that tempts the average person to attend and learn, if you just want to spread awareness. If you want to spread a positive opinion, I’m afraid that would be so hard as to be near-impossible digitally.
“ Showcase cultures’ unique traditions, practices, cuisines, etc”
“ Immersion in cultures. Not just celebrating certain holidays. But learning about history, art, etc”

I believe there is a lot of propaganda in the world today and everything is edited and slanted to a certain view point.
I don't see how wearing a scarf last Friday would have been any different to wearing a poppy on Anzac day, both days we are honouring and remembering those taken before their time in conflict or those that fought in that conflict.
I do not practise any religion, but I know several points on many of them and I don't see much of a difference. One religion makes you cover up and supposedly preaches on how to beat your wife, how is this different to the "rule of thumb" where a husband can beat his wife as long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb of the Christian religion?
No one is forcing anyone to do anything, if you do not practise or do not wish to be involved then you can, but the sociality request is that you do it politely and not with derogatory terms. Which when you think about it is no different than being polite at someone else’s house and saying I disagree rather than you are all idiots.
