I was tagged by @getoutofmyhouse to post the first 10 songs that come up when I set my music library to shuffle. I almost shouldn't have done this because I really only use VLC on my phone, and move things in and out of circulation as I live my life. Botanist - Photosynthesis (The Flenser)

The full, almost orchestral sound of this album is the product of two musicians: Otrebor, founder of the project, on vocals, drums and hammered dulcimer and Daturus on drums as well. The title of the album comes from the process by which plants utilize sunlight to create food from carbon dioxide and water involving a green pigment called chlorophyll. The titles of every track on the album references this life cycle process of a plant both internally and in the environment. Which of course sounds like a concept right out of 1970s art rock. But these songs are forged out of black metal sonics without guitar or bass. Because of that it's tempting to compare the sounds to something on a Swans record as that band has made extensive use of hammered dulcimer to convey a dense and heavy atmosphere that is paradoxically transporting like you're heating the musical equivalent of an altered state of consciousness. Botanist here attempts to convey the miracle and glory of the natural world with abundant and vibrant sounds that express the elegance of the natural structures and processes by which life as we know it is sustained at a very basic level. Probably most of us don't think about how no matter your diet you rely upon the way plants turn sunlight and mineral nutrients into the organic compounds our bodies and the bodies of other animals depend on for our very existence.

Otrebor's distorted vocals are appropriately primal and rough hewn and a fascinating counterpoint to the ethereal yet driving melodies of the hammered dulcimer and the detailed, interlocking rhythms that accent the flow of sound. Though technically a bit of a concept album, listening to the record is like taking in a more prog-inflected album by one of the great Cascadian black metal bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, Wolvserpent and Uada. Their own inspiration in the natural world and the wonder and mystery of it all strongly informs the composition of their own songs and for Botanist on this record and others that influence is especially explicit.  https://verdant-realm-botanist.bandcamp.com/   (TOM MURPHY)

Fun Fact #666: I TA’d a class at UCSC (fiat lux) on Marxist political theory (my focus was on the Situationists and the 21st Century), and at one point group-texted my students advising them to put on Electric Wizard’s “Satanic Rights of Drugula.” Its existence had just been revealed to me and I was just so tickled by the Sheer Stonerassity of it. This is how I imagine the song was “revealed” to the band, so to speak:

But unlike the vast overwhelming majority of similar Dumb Stoner Ideas that remain forever unrealized in the Limbo of Dumb Stoner Thoughts… they actually wrote a six-minute song about it! Amazing! Electric Wizard are my fucking heroes forever for because of that song.

I’ve had a bunch of shit in my queue and haven’t posted anything real in a few days.

I tried to post a pic last night because drinking but the mobile app fucked up so whatever. 

So, here’s the deal of where I’m at.

I moved out of my house a week ago, and now I’m between places. Mostly switching between mine and Laura’s parents’ which works out alright as the two houses are pretty damn different. Laura’s family live in this tiny ultra-suburban bungalow. They’re nice folks but very straight. By contrast my mum’s house is literally a cabin in the woods and about as remote as you can get in the UK which is awesome except when you need anything because it’s a fucking expedition just to go to a shop to get peanut butter.

We move into our next flat at the end of the month, and we’re basically treating August like a summer holiday. I passed my driving test at the start of June and having a car is life changing in this situation. Yesterday I met up with an old friend - neither of us have lived here for nearly 10 years but we both happened to be visiting family at the same time. This week I’m driving to Bristol for a few days, gonna see Bad Religion play, and then over to Wales to visit more family. My brother is moving to Canada next month, possibly forever this time, so I need to spend some time with him.

I’m really looking forward to moving north. It’s scary in the sense of moving across the country to a place I know no-one but I feel really positive about the place, going back to study and everything that could bring for us.
