Two days1 had passed and Wolf started to become rather suspicious. Sure, he could keep up this work, preparing food, delivering it to customers, gentling the garden, running little errands. On one hand he’d agreed to two days to rest and get his foot back in order. On the other, they weren’t in any hurry to push him along. They were clearly well staffed without him. Even with an increase in clientele the Slumbering Serpent was not swamped, not even for bed-space.

This2 morning some of his suspicion was given some balm. Mid-autumn harvest festival happens in a few days and his help would ease a lot of worries.

One3 benefit of being as strange as he is he can ask questions, like for whom this festival is dedicated and what are expectations without cultivating suspicions.

Alban Elfed is the mid-autumn festival of the good child, the best child, and in the wrong hands, the worst bully. Wolf picked up that the festival had two parts. Any4 time he asked they’d say it’s a story for another time. For now, most children would soon be taken to fosterage, taught skills like home repair and gardening from someone they hadn’t spent their childhood with. For now, there would be feasting and games. An old hog had already been slaughtered and been pit steamed for several days. Old ale and wine pulled from the cellars would join the fair, and the hermit brought salves and wraps in case the ball hits the wrong thing too hard or a fist flies and lands too wrong.

Wolf5 saluted the hermit’s weasel. Whiskers noticed, shrugged, and went back to listening to gossip. That kind of dimmed the djyp’s6 heart.

Never mind. Set up the tent for the Sleeping Serpent, wine and ale to sell. Help tie straw dolls for the decorations. Negotiate7 with a raven to accept a fist full of straw rather than the doll. Not doing it. After an angry and rude caw the bird snatched the doll and flew off. He got much the same treatment from two elves.

Several acolytes of Merikka, including Misha, the priestess, wandered the fair. Wolf8 felt certain from her shape and smell, she is not pregnant. Still, she might want to let that dress out, say, by spring.

Wolf9 had just delivered six mugs of ale to a table when he noted a woman calling a name, promise of dinner. The adoptions won’t come until the rising of the Minnow. Wolf wanted to see if he could help when an elderly woman asked about bread. He informed Ollwin, get more eyes on the subject, then delivered the bread and two more mugs. He would latter learn the woman’s boy had run off the year before and she forgets.

While working the tables he heard folk talking. It sounded like negotiations. This kid is good with their hands, that one likes the mud and just made a nice platter that blew up in the fire place, that sort of thing. It warmed the djyp’s heart to learn the Abductions won’t be random.

The Minnow rises the same time each night. While the clouds began to dampen the assembly these people knew the time was right. They gathered at the bonfire and danced. The children at the age, all five of them, were sort of pushed to the center, While some adults slipped out for some canvas bags. On cue a couple chains of fireworks were tossed into the fire, whoop, bang, and chaos? Merikka gets into chaos? And the children were hoodwinked and carried off.

While10 that happened something welled up from the depths of Wolf’s mind. This would be a very good time to really abduct a child.

The djyp sat with Belba, the missus, and shared his thoughts. A lot of people disappearing, how will they know that did not happen tonight? Check on their fosters in the morning, of course, and they will be there. The tailor, the miller, the potter will have two, and the Serpent gets one, already heading there.

The party done, only one was too drunk to get home on his own—the kid arguing for his life about a week ago.11 Wolf picked the kid up, meaning to set him under an elm to sleep it off. The boy settled, the djyp felt a tug at his purse. Well, that thing is pretty tight with good cordage keeping it there. One thing a thief knows it’s how to cut a purse, and how not to lose one. Oops, the boy slipped, landed on his head, and in his mother’s tongue he asked if the kid really is that stupid. Wolf also had an itch at the bottom of his mind. Should he consult with Ollwin about what he’d just retrieved from the kid? Or keep it.

And again the clean up was pretty light. The people who like Merikka are pretty good at cleaning up after themselves. The people in her service, not so much.

Back at the inn he noticed Belba and Ollwin discussing something with the two elves, Dorian and Llywillan, that lived in that town. Angus didn’t make it to the inn. Wolf12 added things together, and approached them.

First13, a peace offering, as he explained what happened with that kid, and turned over the fist of purses he’d lifted off the boy. Hope you can find where they came from, maybe advise they learn a tougher way to keep them.

New question14, who was supposed to take him? Kind of a big guy, ugly, scar on the right side of face? Yeah, saw him talking to that kid about a week ago, discussing the burglary of a senile woman on the other side of the pond. Llywillan noted the man was a regular at the Golden Grain Inn.15 Dorian suggested that would be stupid, someone might notice. The elder reminded him that place was rarely visited by locals because of the atmosphere.

Wolf felt a need for speed. Just an itch at the depth of his mind and nothing more. Still, it meant something, usually did. But16 at the moment, he could feel the day weigh heavily, and a need for rest would be in order. So, new question, that community housing? Is a barracks for a posse? Might be occupied. Find something, I’m sure.

He spied a barn across the river, just behind the Golden Inn. Sun might rise in a few hands, and that might be enough to ease the day before. He could only hope they didn’t have a sentry, or something. Just to be safe he left his purse locked with his bags and only took his flint knife.17

The Golden Grain had a little activity going on.18 The djyp woke to something scratching at the wall. Before he could make out what to do about it he’d been hoodwinked and hefted onto someone’s shoulders.

All Wolf could think at the moment was, here we go.
