Weekly Reading Update (04/22/24)
Reviews and thoughts under the cut
To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang (5/10)
This book was a huge disappointment for me. It's flaws are many, despite the interesting concept, and it ultimately lays in how underdeveloped this book is. It could have used so much editing when it comes to the writing, which is repetitive and trying far too hard to be flowery. The main character and the love interest had a lot of potential in the set-up, but the main character is just sort of bland and blank with an easily manipulated moral code and the love interest is...a manipulative asshole but it's okay because he likes her? The worldbuilding grabbed my interest, but it's inserted in such awkward ways and not explored nearly as much as I'd like. If you'd like to see more in-depth thoughts about this book, check out my full review here.
Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross (4/10)
Half this book is marketing for other franchises. Get this woman a sponsorship with Marvel and Star Wars stat. There are only so many times you can reference pop culture and have the main character gush about her favorite ship (Reylo) or superhero (Wolverine) before I start to feel completely detached from the story since more time is devoted to pitching other media than plot or character development. This story is far too drawn out and obviously has just the barest semblance of plot just to keep the main characters from happiness for a bit longer, which leads to a contrived and boring twist. There are a lot of scenes devoted to obviously setting up all the other couples in this series, and there's just really nothing original about the story. At least the leads had some chemistry.
The Summer Queen by Rochelle Hassan (9/10)
This is the sequel to The Buried and the Bound, and I definitely enjoyed myself. As usual, the dynamics between the main three are really good, platonically and romantically, and I think getting each of their perspectives really contributes to that. I loved how much direct faerie interaction there was in this book, and we got to learn a lot more about how magic works, especially Aziza's. I thought the Hunt would be a much larger part of the book than it was---it felt a little rushed---but other than that this was a strong novel! It also has more of a direct line into what will eventually be the third book, giving it more of an overarching plot.
Island of Graves by Lisa McMann (CR, 18%)
I haven't touched this in a week :D
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (CR, 10%)
I'm trying with this one, I really am, but I'm not sure if it's the writing or that I'm still not sure what the actual plot of this is, but so far this book is astronomically boring. I probably would have DNF'd it by now if it weren't for a book club.
The Sunshine Court by Nora Sakavic (CR, 1%)
I've just barely opened this one, but I'm really excited. My relationship with All for the Game is a complicated one because I both love it and think it is horrendously written, but one thing I love about it is the characters, so I'm ready to see them again! I can't wait to learn about Jean and get his story.

🐺✨
I started Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross a few days ago and finished it this morning. I was immediately bewitched by the cuteness this paranormal romance book constantly exudes. The fact that it's a series with a standalone for each of the Savoie sisters is even more of an appeal. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. 🧚🏻♀️

'Wolf Gone Wild' (Stay a Spell #1) - Juliette Cross
His wolf has taken up residence in his head, taunting him night and day with vividly violent and carnal thoughts. Convinced he's cursed, he needs the help of a powerful witch before he literally goes insane.
Evie Savoie has always obeyed the house rules of her coven — no werewolves. They're known for being moody and volatile. So, when a distempered, dangerous werewolf strolls into the bar and almost strangles one of her late-night customers, she's ready to bounce him through the door. But the desperation in his eyes when he begs her to help him softens her heart and convinces her to bend the rules.
What Evie doesn't know is that Mateo's wolf has a mind of his own. And now that she's in his sights, he wants only one thing. Her.
“Mateo,” I choked out.
“Yes?”
“You’re my fucking hero.”
“No.” He let out a self-deprecating kind of laugh. “I’m your slave.” The rough pads of his fingers slipped to the bare skin in the middle of my back, circling and raising goosebumps on my skin. “I’ll do anything you ask. Go anywhere you go.”
“Even to a cocktail party for witches only.”
“I’d go to hell for you if I had to.”
“Well, this isn’t much different.”
He chuckled then let out a shaky breath. His eyes turned molten. “Not from where I’m standing.”

It always makes me so sad when creators, especially smaller ones, feel like they have to apologize for taking long breaks in between content. Like. No dude. You're a human person, you have a life and responsibilities and stuff. You don't owe us an explanation, do what you have to do

convinced the players of the eventual blaseball campaign to test out the simulation portion of a single game with me as a feel for the mechanics of the ttrpg we're using for rules (B.LA.S.E); we're at the top of the 4th inning and are having a total blast
to be fair nothing canon typical wild has happened due to our self imposed rules for this game (it's semi canon to the campaign aka it takes place just before/is part of the leadup to the story which i have a tldr about below) but that's okay
uhh current player characters (all part of the Dallas Catboys) are
Sydney Tuesday - they/them, shortstop
Mavis Retrograde - he/him, outfield (center)
Hart Melfax - it/its, blaseperson
Normal Hen - she/her, pitcher
Cobalt Territory - ze/hir, outfield (right)
('so what's your campaign idea' it takes place post canon and in summary: What If You Wanted to Play Blaseball But It Was Outlawed/A Lost Art Yet You Fucked Around Then Very Quickly Found Out; subject to major change as I absorb more lore but rn I'm leaning into the horror-y aspects kinda hard ala 'the weirdness vanished after the end but now its waking back up lmao')
shoutout to Normal Hen she's a badass. she ... should probably not think about the 2 multi balls she pitched. no weirdness here. Everything Is Fine (:
#wolf barking#blaseball mines#vortex of play#<- name for the campaign#tbqh i waffle between 'blaseball the splort in universe is gone post canon' 'its just baseball now' & 'no its still there and wild as fuck'#but for this campaign a weird mix of 1 + 2 that turns into 3 is whats happening.#ok goodnight i eep

Weekly Reading Update (04/15/24)
Reviews and thoughts under the cut
The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan (8/10)
This was a quick reread since I'm going to be reading The Summer Queen, the sequel, and I actually liked this one more the second time around! It has a sort of casual interaction with the fantastical that I love, and Aziza, Leo, and Tristan are all great characters with unique ties to each other. There are some points where I think things are just a little too convenient or rushed, but those mostly happen early on and the plot is cohesive and strong for the rest of the book.
House of Crimson Hearts by Ruby Roe (3/10, DNF @ 50%, 18+)
As I've mentioned, I was excited for this one since sapphic fantasy romances are few and far between. Unfortunately, this book was just a mess. The main characters have wildly inconsistent characterization, and it's so obvious the author wrote in certain worldbuilding elements to make them have sex without working out their issues and hatred for each other. The worldbuilding is atrocious; despite the typical vaguely historical fantasy setting descriptions and the lack of anything like lightbulbs, phones, or really any technological advancement, the final straw for me was the remote control vibrator that made its appearance halfway through. There's absolutely no effort to build a sensible setting for the story, which is barely there in the first place. The actual plot was just beginning when I DNF'd--halfway through the book! An unfortunate letdown.
To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang (CR, 53%)
This was another highly anticipated read of mine and, unfortunately, it's not living up to my hopes. I think a lot of flaws lay in the writing, which is clunky and over-descriptive, taking time away from character and plot developments. The worldbuilding is interesting, but it's inserted in very awkward infodumps, and a lot of the elements that caught my attention aren't being given a lot of page time.
Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross (CR, 33%)
On one hand, this is shaping up to be a brainless, fun fantasy romance, just like I thought it'd be. On the other hand, there is a place for your fandom rants, and your published novel is not it. If I wanted to read about this author's undying love for Reylo or Wolverine, I'd check out their social media. I should not have to slog through a whole chapter of the main character perusing a comic book shop so the love interest can say she's so 'quirky' and 'passionate.' It's unfortunate because the rest of the book is meeting my expectations so far.
Island of Graves by Lisa McMann (CR, 18%)
This is another book with a major pro and con. Pro: Alex instantly gave up searching for Aaron, finally letting Aaron reap the consequences of his actions. Con: Alex instantly gave up searching for Aaron, ruining the cliffhanger of the last book. If you're going to introduce a huge future plot point at the end of a book to get readers to continue your series, you can't immediately backtrack on it. This is a symptom of this series' issues as a whole, desperately trying to maintain the status quo for seven whole books, and stunting the plot and character growth in the process.
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (CR, 6%)
I've barely started this one, but for now it's just sort of decent. I'm vaguely intrigued by the vampire's story, but it's also tough to get attached when a lot of the details, such as people's actual names, are missing.

What are you hoping to see from Yellowjackets S3 to get the show back on track
Yellowjackets s2 is sort of a funny case to me, because so many of the plot points and the characters and themes should have worked, but they didn't, and I've been percolating on why since you sent me this ask, and ultimately I think it comes down to the fact that there's no conflict.
Sure, there are things that look and sound like conflict - there are kidnappings and police investigations and cannibalistic chases through the snow - but it's all set dressing. The kidnapping is immediately resolved by Natalie and Lottie rebonding, the police investigation is immediately resolved by having Jeff and Callie become completely, unfalteringly complicit in Shauna's crimes, and the cannibalistic chases through the snow is a narrative cocktease because Javi falls through the ice. They might make the decision to kill Natalie, but nobody does the act, which means they're back to circumstantial choices as opposed to having characters make choices that tell us more about them and drive story and character arcs forwards.
The characters are, in that sense, only really making choices that ultimately compliment everyone elses', meaning they don't have authentic conflict with each other, none of the girls show any deep internal conflict over what it is they're doing, and while you can make the argument for the pack mentality in the past timeline, it reveals itself as a narrative flaw when it's literally the same in every other aspect of the show this season.
Even when characters do occasionally become points of conflict, they're written out of the main narrative or done away with entirely. Crystal dies accidentally the second she finds out Misty broke the box, Ben's lost to hunger dreams that made him narratively functionless until he burned down the cabin in the last episode, and Taissa almost kills her wife and then just seems to completely forget she and her son exist.
Even external conflicts such as the survivors versus the weather is currently without any sting (pun, ha), because we're told they're starving, but with the exception of eating Jackie and the dream sequence where Shauna couldn't breastfeed, the show, in my opinion, fails to actually explore what that means or feels like. It flirts with cabin fever, with starvation, with the freeze, but it never actually leans into it in a way that generates narrative tension or authentic conflict.
Season 1 did have genuine conflicts, and ones that usually made for the most interesting dynamics and scenes of the show, so I'm hopeful that they can find their way back to that. I think what really needs to happen is for them to look at all these points of tension and push them hard enough to break - break relationships, break characters, break some narrative conventions, because right now, we're being told things are bad, but without internal, interpersonal and external conflict, the story isn't moving forwards in a way that carries any meaning.
#i do think young shauna has had some internal conflict#and i am hopeful for the girls vs wild now that the cabin's gone but something tells me they're just going to find the bunker#i live in hope though!#i want the girls to fight#with each other and with others#i want old hurts and anger and everything they did to survive to tear at the fabric of the reality they've clawed their way to#and i do want them to find relief in outsiders but only ever peace with each other#because they're trauma bonded!!#and not to use an overused quote#but y'know the lone wolf dies the pack survives#but yes also internal conflict#like the goat resolve for shauna's trauma was Not It for me#anyway this is pretty negative i'm sorry!#i do think refocusing on what the conflict points are though is the way to ultimately make a better s3#yellowjackets#yellowjackets concrit#welcome to my ama

Thinking about a yandere werewolf, but not just any werewolf… a bounty hunter. And he has it bad for his you. Cowboy Werewolf!
Yandere Shorts: Like I Love You
Yandere werewolf x fem reader
TW: obsession, delusional themes, abo dynamic, horror, gore (mentioned), death of characters, neglectful husband, betrayal, cheating husband, forced relationship, mention of baby trapping, and behavior that should not be romanticized
Rolfe was currently on a hunt… his target is a sickly preacher’s, one that should be easy enough. Her own husband had paid him quite the pretty penny to off her. Poor little lamb didn’t stand a chance in the wilderness of this world. Not when she had enemies close to her side such as an unfaithful husband and a conniving best friend. He almost felt sorry for his prey
He arrived a day later, his clawed fingers dragged through a lock of her hair as he inhaled her scent. She smelled… delicious. And she was so vulnerable too with her nape out that just begged for his teeth to be driven into…
Rolfe shook his head before he went back into a trance when she subconsciously leaned into his touch. His hand moved up and grazed her temple that felt as if it were ablaze. Poor woman had a fever…
“Darling? Did you finally come to me?” Her voice was a bit delirious with sickness as she kissed his hands. Each kiss made him feel as if he was her beloved. It took everything in him not to loudly whine like a dog. “I missed you so much James. I’m sorry I got sick again.”
Rolfe didn’t say a word before he continued to drag his rough palms through her hair. His heart hammered in his chest and his wolf clawed inside his brain to be released. It seemed this woman before him… was his fated mate.”
Rolfe bent down and buried his nose into the crook of her neck to deeply inhaled. Oh yes… this lassy was his for the takin.
Rolfe began to slowly nurse her back to health rather than off her. An action that made his employer question him. Why on earth would a monster nurse such a nuisance back to health? She was always near death’s door. What use was such a delicate woman in the Wild West?
“When are you going to off (your name)? She’s an easy target.”
“I have honor as a bounty hunter. It must be a hunt.” Rolfe snarled at (your name)’s husband, James, the man who dared to keep her sick due to his lack of care. Had that scrawny man have no pride as a man? The pastor made him sick.
“She’s easy to pick off right now. I’d really like this to be over and done with so I can marry Helen. This is why I hired a monster-“ Rolfe picked James up from the ground by his throat as James gasped for air.
“You are a foolish, greedy man. Are you sure you are truly a man of god?” Rolfe growled, showing his fangs. His dark, muscular form largely towered over James’s lithe frame. “You’re a pathetic man.”
Rolfe soon went back to the care of (your name). The werewolf rubbed his cheeks all over her bed and her body to scent her… he needed to get rid of James’s scent. Rolfe wouldn’t let another have her and hurt her again… he’d spirit her away.
Rolfe wondered how many pups she’d want. If they’d be pretty like her but strong like him… if she’d pepper him with nips and kisses everyday. If she’d beg him for his knot on the next full moon as he properly mated her?
“Darling?” (Your name) reached for his face and Rolfe was quick to put his face in them. A needy whine escaped his throat while he nuzzled her. She was his precious mate…
He snarled when he saw Helen enter. The woman scoffed at him in disgust.
“Ugh. James and I are tired of waiting. You have been here over a month! We want you gone beast. We’ll do it ourselves.”
“So you’re cancelling the contract?” He hummed while he continued to tenderly kiss (your name)‘a palms. “Are you sure? Did you read the fine print?”
“Yes. We don’t need your kind here, true love will prevail-“ Helen didn’t even have time to scream before a giant black wolf hybrid had dug it’s fangs into her throat and ripped it apart like wrapping paper. Blood splattered all over the floor and walls as Helen could only helplessly choke on her own blood.
“Yes… true love will prevail.” He muttered with a a satisfied hum. “My mate will be so happy.”
Meanwhile, James fled into the forest for dear life. That beast had gotten Helen! The two of them couldn’t believe the werewolf would turn on him.
James loudly leapt when he heard something large chase him through the underbrush on all fours. He could hear his heartbeat in his ears and feel his sweat pool down his back in puddles. He needed to get to the church! A demon such as the bounty hunter couldn’t possibly enter there-
But James was knocked to the ground as an agonized shriek fell from his lips. The werewolf began to shake and mangle his leg like the bloodthirsty beast it was…
“Let me go! Let me go! I didn’t do anything-“
Rolfe chuckled darkly. The black werewolf dropped his legs and glanced his beastly head at James. “Oh but she never did anything either… all she did was foolishly love you.”
“W-what do you mean? Are you talking about-“ James’s words were muffled by the paw like hand that covered his mouth. Rolfe shushed him.
“Shhh. You may have failed to pay me and cancel my contract but I had gotten something far more valuable from this transaction. Something most werewolves dream to find in their lifetimes… a fated mate!” Rolfe sighed dreamily. “You may have failed as a protector and provider, but I surely won’t! You have given me something more valuable than any coin could offer… yet you were neglectful to her. Such a shame really.”
“I… I’ll do anything! Just take her and let me live.”
“Ah but I can’t do that. Not when she still calls for you at night. No… you have to be eliminated. Destroyed, really. You can no longer exist on the same planet as her! You are in the way of my love!”
Loud screams of terror ringed out throughout the crisp night air and then it was silence.
Rolfe returned hours later scrubbed clean of blood while he crawled into the bed with his darling mate. He sighed in contentment when she cuddled him. Yes… it may take time to train her properly, but he was sure he could do it. He could make her love him. Just like he loved her.

Do You Feel That?
Idea. So imagine the bats are going to Amity (or a place nearby) to investigate something. A building that had very strange readings, maybe even investigating a case. Probbaly starting in a forest. So this place is haunted naturally, and the ghosts can’t be perceived by the human eye. In this universe, Danny can technically become visible in his ghost form if he concentrates, along with many powerful ghosts, but their default is intangibility and invisibility and it’s just inefficient to use a that much power just to be seen. So most things that happen in Amity are not seen by normal people. Those infected by ectoplasm (the pits and ectoplasm being two separate things in this) are able to see ghosts after enough exposure. So if a hero were to come to Amity, they would see the destruction happening but it would look like some kind of invisible force, and then if they ask why others aren’t panicking, they just say Phantom is taking care of it.
Anyways, so the bats do not know about ghosts and are investigating this house and basically every kind of malevolent spirit you can think of is there and trying to mess with them. After all, even if they can’t see a ghost, that ghost can still affect them. And Phantom sees these idiots getting closer to one of the designated danger zones in his territory. (Or he was visiting a nearby haunted area due to the rising danger level and sees the bats right in the middle of it) The place all natives know to avoid at all costs. So the bats go anyways, completly oblivious to the danger. Danny arrives just in time to stop a ghost who was inches away from digging their claws into Red Robin.
And it goes on with Danny desperately keeping the ghosts back, tackling them, shooting them, growling and hissing and doing everything in his power to shield the oblivious heroes and keep them safe. He can’t even warn them because he’s spending too much power just keeping them alive in the woods. Because of course they decide to investigate the most haunted woods near Amity. Most of these spirits are old, angry, and wild.
And the bats are just casually going about their buisness, discussing the case and the evidence they found.
Danny tackles a ghost wolf to keep them from biting their fangs into Red Hood’s neck.
They follow some tracks.
Danny grabbing the shadowing tendrils attempting to strangle Nightwing.
They even joke around and push each other.
Someone temporarily possessed Red Robin and he starts reaching for a batarang with bloodlust in his eyes, before Danny digs his hands into the bat’s chest and rips out the foreign entity.
There is screaming, snarling, screeches, and lots of punches thrown, all unheard by the bats.
By the end, Danny is panting as they finally made it out of the forest. The bats are tracking a signal, and heading towards an abandoned house. Danny looks up and sees the place absolutly overflowing with spirits. They are crawling up the sides, eyes and teeth and tentacles moving through the wooden boards. Banshees and wraiths, eyeing them through the windows. Skinny limbs with barely any form creaking as their claws try to escape the house and reach towards the group below. Hundreds upon hundreds of spirits all confined to this small hut and ready to tear apart any who enter.
Danny takes one look at them, overhears the bats say that they have to head inside, and decide that he’s not dealing with this today. So he shoots a small laser to cut their power. No signal? No lights? No search.
He can hear the bats complaining but eventually, they have to turn back as they lost the signal and they are unable to continue. And hears them talk about how the place was so weird. Almost like something was watching them.
Phantom sags in relief once they are finally gone.
While they leave, Danny squares his shoulders because he needs to deal with all these ghosts before they get back.
Later, after not finding anything strange about the house or forest or the cause of their case (possibly a death? Or maybe just trying to find information connecting to something else?) and all the previous evidence and traces were gone. So they call in the magic users to use a spell to show the past and figure out what happened. And they can see the group in a sort of 3D holographic image as they investigated. But the spell doesn’t just show them, it shows every being from that time….so the group gets to see just exactly how close they all came to dying.
