FFXIV Write: Duel

In which Agi *actually* notices some light flirting from Gulool Ja Ja after their duel. SFW.

“What exactly did my husband tell you about me?” Agnes giggled before taking a bite of her taco. After relaying her frankly horrifying tale about how that two-headed shit for brains destroyed our tacos, Gulool Ja Ja ordered that the palace’s finest tacos be made for her.

As a thank you for indulging him in a duel, which I normally wouldn’t do.

However…

Gulool Ja Ja laughed heartily. “Oh, nothing scandalous I assure you! Estinien said, ‘My wife is the best warrior on the star. She’ll not spar with anyone, however…” There we go. However. “I believe she wouldn’t be able to resist sparring with you…the challenge excites her.’”

More laughter.

Because of course Estinien would say something like that to a bloke he’s just met and sparred with.

Love, I…

Fucking hells, ser---you know me too well!

Blushing slightly, she smiled. “Guilty. I’ve never fought a two-headed Mamool Ja before, so congrats, Excellency! You’re the first!”

“Ha! Well, I’m honored to be the Warrior of Light’s first.” The Head of Resolve fucking just winked at me?!?! What on earth is going on?!?!?

Wait…

Is…

With the other head asleep…?

What?!?!?

Now giggling more, her cheeks burned. “Oh goodness, yes. I…yes, these are such lovely tacos. Thank you so much, Excellency.”

That’s it, Agi. Get this shit back on track.

Luckily for her, things got one hundred percent less…umm…you know…after she perhaps not so subtly changed the subject.

When she mentioned the interaction with Estinien later, to her surprise, he laughed.

And laughed.

And laughed.

“Estinien Varlineau, what is so funny?!” Agnes pouted, lying next to him in bed after they put the children to bed.

He wiped his eyes and cackled. “Agi, you’re a beautiful woman! People flirt with you all the time, and you don’t bloody notice.” Estinien turned his head to face her very much still pouting face. “And the one time you do, it’s your new friend’s dad!” He quickly kissed her and then laughed more. He. Won’t. Stop. Laughing. Once he calmed his silly, sexy ass down, he smiled ruefully and held her hand. “In case you’re wondering, I’m not bothered by it.”

She smirked. “The laughing was a clue, love.”

“You only have eyes for me, my angel. Not worried about that. Though, it heartens me that His Excellency has such good taste in ladies.” A growing grin tugged on his lips as his pale blue eyes twinkled. “After all, you’re the very—”

“Don’t say it!” She giggled.

“The very breast wife!”

The two exploded in laughter.

dawntrail and the theme of duality and unity through visual motif

Hi, thank you for coming to my MEGtalk presentation, aka I’ve already yelled about this to my friends but they’re not as into theorizing as I am so I’m throwing this out to fellow theorists on tumblr dot come.

I want to discuss the motifs we’ve seen of Dawntrail so far, specifically evidence pointing to the theme of duality, unity, and two becoming one.

Discussion of live letters, marketing materials, teasers, trailers, and theories ahead.

reflection, parallels, and the motif of two and connection in official materials

Starting with Dawntrail’s poster, we immediately see reflection, pairs of two, and the idea of symmetry:

There is a sense of symmetry in the composition, where you can clearly mark a vertical line down the center of the poster

One side faces left, the other side faces right, visually separating Team WoL and everyone else/our rivals at least in the beginning

Gulool Ja Ja, the Dawnservant, is divided by the imaginary center line, with one head falling on either side of the composition

NOTE: Mystery woman at the top facing left towards Team WoL, foreshadowing her involvement with our success?

Twos throughout the poster design: Gulool Ja Ja’s two heads, his two swords, everyone placed in a pair throughout the composition (Erenville and Koana, WoL and Urianger, Krile and Thancred, Wuk Lamat and Mysterious Mamool Ja)

I’m not sure if this implies a parallel of character arcs in the story, but it is worth noting and revisiting after Dawntrail releases

The teaser for the main menu screen was released last week, and builds upon the visual motif from the poster:

Tuliyollal is reflected in the water

Clouds are reflected in the water as well as reflect across the imaginary center line

Looking at what I assume is the palace and home of the Dawnservant, its design is perfectly symmetrical; I believe this is the first straight on view we’ve seen of its architecture

As we see in the full trailer for Dawntrail and in the new world map, there is an extremely long bridge that connects the two halves of the continent:

On the map, we can clearly see a giant chasm physically separating the two halves of the continent

In the trailer, we see extreme visual differences between the two halves of the continent; one full of color and flora and the other an arid desert

They are two distinct halves of a whole

Even the new DPS job, Viper, Meteor’s assigned job for this expac and the newest job completely unique to FFXIV uses dual swords that can be apart or combined.

what we know about the story so far, from fanfest, live letters, and msq (sources to be added)

Multiple comments have been made about basic elements of the story:

Gulool Ja Ja is blessed with two heads, an auspicious sign

Gulool Ja Ja united the disparate peoples of Tural under the one unifying nation of Tuliyollal

To further signify the union of the people of Tural, Gulool Ja Ja adopted four children; several races under one household

Bakool Ja Ja is a contender for the throne; he is not royalty but has two heads like the Dawnservant

Yoshi P has made comments about the two halves of the story feeling very distinct

concluding thoughts

It’a clear to me the idea of duality and two becoming one is an underlying theme of this expansion:

Dawntrail’s poster child DPS job being built around two swords becoming one

Gulool Ja Ja’s two heads, one body

The bridge connecting two halves of the continent

There is also symmetry and parallels seen throughout available marketing materials. From this motif I suspect a few things to happen in this expac:

There will not be one ruler, but two governing heads of state, ruling as one

Tuliyollal and Solution Nine, both confirmed to be hub cities and potentially previously unknown to each other, will form a relationship or partnership; perhaps a story beat will be navigating the unease and awkwardness of this new political alliance

A major plot point during the 6.x patches was bridging the Source with the shards for traveling between worlds; I suspect some development on that front especially with Y’shtola’s involvement

Regardless of where the story takes us, I’m so excited and interested in what they do with the theme of duality and connection that they’ve primed us for, as it keeps popping up again and again in everything they show us and tell us.

E.renville x K.oana - Tbh, when we were presented with E.renville being childhood friends with the claimants I wish we'd gotten to see more of the K.oana and E.renville dynamic.

T.hancred x U.rianger x K.oana - Idk, in my own mild rewrites of D.awntrail they were school buddies rather than just some random dude.. Let me have the silly OT3.

Interested in potentially exploring:

K.oana / S.phene - I have nothing to put here other than exploring it seems neat. In a better expac we could have gotten a bit on Koana being able to make the case for Sphene cause Sphene is just bits and pieces of Koana's and Gulool Ja's view taken to a logical extreme.

NOtp's:

W.uk L.amat x K.oana - I RLLY HATE how much of a s.iscon the writing started making K.oana midway through the expac. It gave the vibe that Koana had more than complete brotherly feelings towards her and I just. No. Ick. Let's NOT.

Well, I was right. The credits are rolling. The sun is rising over Living Memory, finally. I still have questions but I imagine we'll get some of them answered in the 7.x patches.

Lots of little reveals here. Bakool Ja Ja survived the invasion and joined the Landsguard. WoL gets to keep the key. Gulool Ja gets introduced to Everkeep's people, right after the news is broken that Sphene is dead.

(Per the credits here, Otis' VA is not the same as Hien's as I mused earlier. Just me hearing things...)

Ah we don't get to participate (in quests) in the 3 day party? Rats.

I like the references to the trailer that are going on in this scene. It's great.

I also like that they left some things open to the post Dawntrail stuff. It's gonna take me a while and probably a review of my own liveblog to figure out what the questions I have are. And I'll probably post a true summary of my thoughts at some point...

And I'll definitely pick this back up for the post-DT patches. I think my next stop is going to be dragging all my job levels up to 100, though... I still have to learn PCT!

When storm clouds gather around and heavy rains descend Just remember that death is not the end ⸺ ♫

As Gulool Ja Ja lay dying, his flesh withering, his milky eyes shift their focus to find the champion ⸺ his champion, his Yein of Iron ⸺ knelt in the corner of his vision.

"I see... a sparrow," he rumbles weakly, the corners of his mouth raising half an ilm in a valiant effort to smile. He can hear his children's weeping still, despite his efforts to assuage their sorrow.

Yein returns his smile, as he knew they would. Bare palms normally protected by leather and metal touch his lips, brushing over skin and teeth. It touches him in a way he had come to love.

"We might be too large in size," he muses, "to become one of your little birds..."

A wet sound leaves Yein's scarred lips, letting the dying sovereign glimpse their pointed teeth.

"Maybe you will return as a very large bird," they offer, "with two heads." Despite their forced mirth, their fingers are trembling as they caress him.

"Perhaps," Gulool Ja Ja heaves in agreement. He attempts to see them more clearly, hoping to commit their shape to his final memory. A quivering smile shifts his wrinkled lips against their touch.

"I cannot wait... to introduce you to him. My brother..."

"Me too, dawnlight," the elezen says. As Gulool Ja Ja's eyes drift shut, they mirror his expression and curl forward to press their scarred cheek against the skin between his eyes.

Nearby, Wuk Lamat is screaming one last time for her papa.

For the tree of life is growing where the spirit never dies ⸺ ♫

⸺ and I love too that love soon might end

Firstly, posing this big fella is a pain in the ass. Secondly, I'm officially obsessed with these two.

I like to think that after Wuk Lamat and Koana became the new Dawnservant, Gulool Ja Ja and Yein spoke about the latter staying in Tural.

Yein would have not-so-coyly asked Gulool Ja Ja for his advice on what they should do, whether they should remain.

"How unfair of you to place this upon an old monarch's shoulders," the former Dawnservant retorts. "I could share with you my thoughts, but I worry they may sound selfish."

"Pretend, then," Yein replies, "that you are selfish."

"I would tell you that I hope you stay," he concedes without hesitation. "I would choose to tell myself that this is best for Lamaty'i. I see how she looks to you for strength, when the two of you stand before me as comrades. But in my heart, I acknowledge this is an old mamool ja's selfish wish."

Yein listens, then hums.

"So the Head of Resolve does keep a piece of his brother's reason with him," they reply softly.

Gulool Ja Ja smiles, showing all his teeth. "I try."

Yein brings their head above the surface, their magpie hair now clinging messily to their features. The waters do little to hide the rest of them from their captive audience.

"I could really stay like this forever," they call out.

Gulool Ja Ja feels the ocean breeze graze his teeth as his lips pull away into a smile. The wrinkles around his eyes deepen.

"We can, my sparrow champion," he answers. "For I am no longer the Dawnservant. Now, I am simply a good citizen of Tuliyollal. And I am eager to know what this new chapter will bring."

He bellows one of his abundant laughs. Yein loves the way it thunders against their ears.

What are their parallels, whether in their personalities or their histories?

(grabby hands gimme that lore)

Hm, I want to think about any parallels in their history some more, though I don't think there are many concrete examples. Their paths through their separate lives did seem to lead Gulool Ja Ja and Yein to some very similar beliefs, molding their outlook on life into matching shapes.

They are passionate entities who draw fulfillment from caring for others around them, whether they're nurturing family and friends or a whole damn population. They are both viewed as legends, champions that inspire with their power and their hearts. They also understand the importance of this position enough to place it above their own pursuits.

The events of Dawntrail marks a point of change for them both. Yein is seeking reprieve from their mantle as Warrior of Light; Gulool Ja Ja is preparing to step down from his long reign. Their immediate futures are uncertain, yet heavy with potential. Then they met, two pendulums about to swing.

I believe that at the time of their first meeting, Yein and Gulool Ja Ja felt in each other a burning desire for more. This would have led to their first of many duels. (I headcanon WoL!Yein spent months with Wuk Lamat to complete the Dawnservant trials.) But that shared lust was not restricted purely to the adrenaline and intimacy of close combat, and I feel that Yein and Gulool Ja Ja would have quickly recognized that in one another as they clashed and pressed close, separated purely by the force with which they hold their weapons.

I like to think they quickly recognized their infinite capacity to love. They seek connections with the world around them, and the one they formed with each other happened to be very beautiful.

Who initiates kisses? Where is their favorite spot to kiss each other?

Yein definitely initiates them!

Smooches aren't particularly easy between a blessed siblings and an elezen, but Yein never turns down a challenge. They very likely enjoy kissing Gulool Ja Ja anywhere they can reach. Given their difference in size, their lips probably do little more than tickle whatever spot they kiss; so they always follow up with biting. Their favorite spot? Definitely the Dawnservant's throat. It is softer than most other parts of his body, and they like to feel the way it rumbles under their lips and against their teeth at any sound he makes.

I bet Gulool Ja Ja would love to kiss them in return had he the proper mouth for the task, but he probably enjoys the coverage his tongue can pull off. There's more than one way to taste his beloved Warrior of Light... (ꈍᴗꈍ)

6. How do their personalities complement each other? How do they clash?

Gulool Ja Ja and Yein complement each other so well because they are so similar in their approach to most situations. Moreover, they aren't the kind of people to really interfere in each other's affairs.

But not every breathing (or non-breathing) moment can be perfectly peaceful. While conflicts between them are rare, I imagine the Dawnservant will inevitably find that his Warrior of Light is also quite headstrong. Maybe he doesn't think too much of this at first and chalks their stubbornness up to their younger age. Sure, Yein is approaching 40, but Gulool Ja Ja has got to be pushing 100 by now. As a result, he may come off as dismissive (Unintentionally!) toward Yein and their personal concerns, at least through Yein's lens.

Fear not! Even without the Head of Reason to guide him, I've no doubt Gulool Ja Ja can still very swiftly navigate troubled waters between himself and his dear companion.
