Part of the reason why Temeraire is so good is that Naomi Novik can actually write reasonably convincing 19th century dialog and prose. It really feels like so many historical fiction authors only barely make an effort to make their dialog period appropriate and don’t even try with the prose/style and it’s honestly really refreshing to read a book that’s like actively trying to emulate the period

I'm cackling at the idea that Binghe is too busy flirting/courting this LITERAL DEITY to care about getting revenge on those who wronged him - he gets thrown into the abyss and he's like "damn, Shen Qingqiu is really supportive of my courting methods, gotta find some good stuff now". Binghe would definitely be in awe; a well-known, powerful deity is giving him gifts and helping him even though he's just a worthless disciple who can barely cultivate properly?? Don't worry, he'll cultivate and make his beloved proud!!! I like to think that he's fantasising about this deity sweeping him off his feet after a few gifts or so, and then he accidentally bumps into him with Ning Yingying and is like "this is literally the fittest person ever what do you MEAN I CAN'T JUST PROPOSE TO HIM ON THE SPOT?!??!!?" He makes his own little shrine in his woodshed, leaving little offerings of food when he manages to sneak into the kitchens at night and if not he makes his own little statues out of wood (crude, but he's learning!!) and offers them up instead - he can't offer anything else yet!!! Shen Yuan is just cooing over this little bun giving him so many offerings n praying so much!!! This little sweetheart is so devoted to him, even when he doesn't need to be!
