Fellas. After a bit longer than I wanted, I bring you your suggestions. Both from Twitter and Tumblr.
Imma tag the Tumblr folks here cause I already did the same for Twitter
Cao Cao hitting on Guan Yu (Yuri edition): @tempuffer
Ling Tong and Gan Ning getting along: @dovahkiin99
Zhao Yun princess carrying Zhuge Liang: @zhao-zilong
Diaochan taking Red Hare: @sol-lus
The return of horse Sima Yi: @the-kingdom-of-wei
There is one last one but I’ll wait to see if I can just put it here like I could on Twitter. Because it’s literally just Lu Bu, naked with funny image censoring his bits and Zhang Liao begging for him to put on some damn pants. Please let me know 😳

Lu Bu gets divorced at a ski resort. Gets married off immediately after. Gets put on trial for the murder of Cao Pi, who was on the witness stand. Gan Ning was a prosecutor who did a dance and the autopsy report magically updated itself by the power of his dope moves. Red Hare was the murderer and was a human btw. More details here
Also had one where Lu Bu (the wo long version) was just tenderly smiling at the camera. He also was wearing pink pyjamas.
Saw a post about person having dream with dw characters.
I had one short one too 👀
Now I’m curious did anyone else have dreams with musou chars?
I’d like to hear it 👉🏻👈🏻

I'm thinking about the basilisk in the gremlins au.
Like, you are an being millenia old, bond to serve the heir of your old owner, you don't see anyone and any light for so long and are bond to the sewers of the school and so when someone finally came you do everything he order besides their thing or not and you killed a girl and all good, but than the boy disappear and never returned to Hogwarts and when he does he's wrong in ways you can't really tell how but he is, and so again you are alone.
And them there's a little girl with a piece of the boy in a book appears and order you around, and so you follow and cause caos with all the dangerous and deadly things you do and you think its gonna be like when the boy was alive and himself.
But them in your layer drops 4 kids who you can see and they can't see you and start pass time with you and you like them, you like the tall one who even at the others avoids eye contact and treats you with the most kindness, you like the question one who is enthralled to learn what your abilities are and what can do, you like the lound one that even invisible you can clearly tell where he is just with his temperature and his loudness, and o the one from your old owner house even with the lack of interaction makes you wanna protect him like you would with an nest.
So them you stop doing the bindings of the book controlled girl. And then something changes again and the book doesn't come back for a long time, but them it does and it is almost killing the girl and orders you into an old binding with magic and not just courtesy, wo now you have no other option than obey, and now there's another boy trying to help the girl, but you have to kill him. And them your liked ones appear and cause caos bigger than you saw in millennia of life and somehow they destroy the book boy with your venom and give invisible potions to the girl and boy and the Phoenix that almost blinded you and they go with an promise to look back.
The basilisk is just happy its liked ones didn't die.

[fic] 5 times Katy got isekai’d and met Wenwu in a past life
Chapter 1/5
Characters: Katy Chen, Xu Wenwu, mentions of Shaun/Shangqi Genre: comedy, gen Rating: PG13 for language I guess? Ships: no ship dynamics, but will imply movie-canon ships later Word count: 961 Notes/CW: spoilers for the movie, goofy premise, some dicey Mandarin that some diaspora Chinese kids may relate to. This is my first time throwing fic on tumblr so let me know if I need more tags or sth.
Takes place between Katy meeting Wenwu officially and the end of the movie.
Preview: “Hey guys, I’m so sorry, I can explain–” Katy says, knowing full well that she really can’t. The voices go quiet suddenly. A man stands in front of the others, arm out in the universal ‘chill the fuck out’ gesture. Damn bruh, Katy thinks, until she recognizes the man.
“Oh my god, it’s Shaun’s dad!”
KATY lurches awake. Goddamned falling dreams. It feels like she actually fell this time, though. She sits up on a hard, cold floor. “Where am I?”
This doesn’t look like any of the usual bars or karaoke rooms or bus stops she’s waken up at. She’s inside, which is a plus. It’s a large room with intricate, lacquered furniture. It smells like an herbalist shop. It looks like she woke up at a museum exhibit that would be titled ‘Oriental Room’ or something like that.
A cluster of shouts catch her attention. A bunch of dudes with long hair and old time clothes (like really old time) and really angry voices are bunched up at a set of wide double doors, and they look super pissed. Katy wonders if she blacked out and stumbled into a culture center or maybe a movie set?
“Hey guys, I’m so sorry, I can explain–” Katy says, knowing full well that she really can’t. The voices go quiet suddenly. A man stands in front of the others, arm out in the universal ‘chill the fuck out’ gesture. Damn bruh, Katy thinks, until she recognizes the man.
“Oh my god, it’s Shaun’s dad!” Katy pushes herself up to her feet, and she feels surprisingly clear-headed considering the bender that must have gotten her here. “It’s me! Katy! Remember? Kay-tee. You know, Shaun’s friend?”
Shaun’s dad doesn’t react, even though the guys behind him are getting riled up. They’re grumbling in Mandarin-Katy knows that much-but she can’t quite grasp what they’re saying.
“Why’re you dressed like that? Are you guys, like, LARPing?” She gestures at the historic garb and the weapons that she just noticed they’re sporting.
Shaun’s dad hasn’t said anything yet, and he’s looking at her cautiously. Which-fair-Katy had only met him a few days ago, and it wasn’t exactly a picnic. But that was all a family thing! Katy just happened to be at the dining table where Shaun’s dad talked about his hallucinations and how disappointed he was in Shaun and basically ignored Xialing and–
Oh, duh! Katy smacks herself on the forehead with the palm of her hand. “Shang chi. I’m Shang chi’s friend. He goes by Shaun in the US. Katy.” She punctuates her reminder by waving her hand in a small semicircle in front of her chest. “Uh… Shangqi. Peng you. Shàngqì! Your son! Shāngqí? Peng you! Wo shi peng you! Shi Katy!”
Shaun’s dad and his crew are still looking really hostile, like she really isn’t supposed to be there. Shit, what if she accidentally crashed Shaun’s dad’s secret freaky sex party? Katy grasps at her feeble memories of Elementary Chinese 1, but Shaun’s dad still looks hella pissed like she just took a steaming dump on his polished floor. She looks down just to make sure she didn’t.
He starts calling out to the guys behind him, and they begin slowly fanning out to the perimeter of the room. He steps forward, the only thing between Katy and the way out. His hands are at this hip, where he draws out a sword that is holy shit okay the blade is wider than her whole arm.
“No! It’s - we met! We’re cool! I won’t tell Shaun about your weird LARP sex party or whatever, I promise!” Katy pleads, her voice croaking in her throat. But as she appeals to him, Shaun’s dad just keeps taking slow, menacing steps towards her. And then Katy gets it: she’s having a dream. They haven’t met, not in her dream anyway. That explains why Shaun’s dad looks like a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon extra. And even though it’s a dream, Katy still instinctively backs away when Shaun’s dad points the business end of the sword at her.
He begins addressing her, but she has literally no idea what he’s saying. He might not even be speaking real Chinese - if this is supposed to be a product of her mind, then it’s definitely going to be some busted Mandarin coming out of his mouth.
“Bu yao! Bu yao!” Katy doesn’t know why she’s compelled to reason with Shaun’s dad in her dream, but it’s also a hella realistic one. The way her shoes squeak against the polished floor, the sounds of armor clinking around and in front of her. And Shaun’s dad looks as serious as all you can eat sushi.
Katy tries to will herself awake, but it’s not happening. She knows it’s a dream, she knows she’s gonna jolt awake and it’s gonna suck for a few minutes, but it’s also fucking scary right now. That sword looks hella sharp.
“Liu Bei!” Katy blurts out. Oh shit that doesn’t mean anything; that’s a character from Dynasty Warriors.
W a i t. Dynasty Warriors is based on Chinese history. Maybe if Shaun’s dad recognizes some of these names, he’ll listen to her.
“Guan Yu! Z-zhang Fei!” Katy continues. “Cao Cao!” She grimaces. “No, Cao Cao’s bad. Bad guy. Bu yao!” She makes ostentatious thumbs-down gestures and shakes her head, like she’s on a kid’s educational program.
To Katy’s surprise, Shaun’s dad’s stance shifts. It’s not quite relaxed, but he doesn’t look like he’s going to pounce either. The guys around the room are eyeing each other, and they’re murmuring too. Shit, maybe this is a huge Dynasty Warriors role playing group she stumbled on. Okay, Katy thinks, I can do this.
“Chi bi?” she throws out, remembering the one movie she stayed awake for in that one Chinese culture elective. “Huo! Hen duo huo. Um, feng! Zhuge Liang… you feng.” She nods decisively with an enthusiastic thumbs up.
The room is silent after Katy’s verbal dump. And then Shaun’s dad leaps forward and stabs her right in the gut.

Koei Warriors Retrospective Part 16: Dynasty Warriors Origins Demo (Special)
Tumblr media
Dynasty Warriors Origins Demo (真・三國無双 ORIGINS 体験版) Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC Release date: 22 November 2024
The launch of this retrospective series coinciding with the announcement of Dynasty Warriors Origins was honestly unexpected. When I began publishing the series in July, I was releasing two parts a month given that I had pre-written quite a few at that point. September and October upped it to four parts with the spinoffs for each generation and Warriors Orochi before I decided to take it back down to two parts in November as the posting had caught up with the drafting.
At this point in time, posting the retrospective for DW7 means that the post for its spinoffs would come out in January 2025. Since I've got quite a bit to cover before I actually get to Dynasty Warriors Origins (and also because I don't want to split a game between two years), I'm going to review the demo for a special post, which will also count as my initial thoughts on the game. Let's get into it.
Dynasty Warriors Origins Demo
Dynasty Warriors Origins will cover a limited scope of the late Han Dynasty from the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the Battle of Chibi, which is technically the lead-in to the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China. Hence, the cast has been cut down to half of what it was in DW9 with only 47 characters appearing in this game, among them 9 characters "playable" through character swapping. As such, the three main factions of Wei, Wu and Shu are known by the banner of their leaders, ie. Cao Cao, the Sun family or Liu Bei. The game will follow a nameless wanderer protagonist who can be given a name in the game and is also known by the nickname Ziluan (紫鸞). The protagonist is normally silent in movies and cutscenes (a staple for games of this type), but he has voiced lines in battle.
According to producer Tomohiko Shō who has returned to the position following DW6 (and Next), these cut-downs were made because he believed that the game got too big, whether in terms of the history, the characters, or the open world, and he wanted to put more focus on the battles, stories and the characters. He didn't even want to go up to Chibi at first, but he thought it would act as a good climax for people who are new to the story of the Three Kingdoms.
The situation with the protagonist reminds me of the New Kid situation from the South Park games, however something that pissed fans off was that there was no character customisation, unlike in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Although I'm not too fussed by it, I can see why people would like to customise their protagonist character, but given how he is written to have amnesia, maybe we'll get his backstory during the game. Maybe the budget didn't allow for both a backstory and character customisation, but if there are other games out there (including South Park) that have both things, then fans shouldn't let Koei Tecmo wave it away with an excuse.
The character designs continue with the style introduced in DW9, with some characters like Cao Cao and Guan Yu appearing younger due to the time period of the story. The game does have Japanese, English and Mandarin Chinese voices like with DW9, though I have to say, Cao Cao's English and Chinese voices sound odd, like they're lower/deeper and older than they should be. Sun Jian's Chinese voice also sounds younger than how he looks, too. Even the damn protagonist sounds older than he looks in any voice option.
Speaking of which, yes, the English voices have been recasted (and credited before release) yet again and although we probably won't find out the studio who dubbed the game until someone takes a look at the credits, it can be definitively said that Voxx Studios had no involvement in it. Based on a tweet I saw, my money's on the New York-based 3Beep, who did the English dubbing for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Most characters are voiced by names that are unknown to me but have been featured in other dubbing works (including the aforementioned Wo Long).
Of note, three English voice actors in the game, namely Kyle Herbert, Kaiji Tang and David Lodge, are names previously known in Dynasty Warriors 8, which was over a decade ago now. The three voiced Sima Yi, Sima Zhao and Ling Tong in DW8 and they now voice Lu Bu, Gan Ning and Cheng Pu. I predicted that David Lodge was the narrator from the announcement trailer because I thought he sounded like WO2 Fu Xi when I first heard it, but I never thought I'd actually be on the mark here. I might be wrong about David Lodge being the narrator, but damn it, let me have this victory for once. While Voicegroup and the cast that dub fans knew and love are dead in the water (spoiler alert for the DW9 retrospective), it's a little relieving to know that some vestiges of it have been repurposed in new incarnations, even if the new dubs don't hit the same way they did with the Voicegroup dubs.
To many people, this may seem like a small thing in the grand scheme of things (like in Starfield), but if Koei Tecmo implements a pronoun option for a character you can't even customise except for the name and also sounds older than he looks I'm going to be pissed. This isn't an SJW thing there, it's more a question of "why" given the circumstances. Want to know if I'm joking? Find out for yourself when the retrospective for this game comes out.
Anyway, let's get onto the demo itself. The demo allows you to play in the Battle of Sishui Gate to get a feel of the game's system. There are three difficulties available, namely Historian, Wayfarer and Hero. Historian difficulty is an easier difficulty where it is easier to gain bravery and Musou, while the Hero difficulty is a harder difficulty that makes enemies more aggressive. It should be noted that the game is still fairly challenging on Historian difficulty depending on what you do, making the three difficulties equivalent to Normal, Hard or Chaos difficulty from DW8, or Easy, Normal or Hard from DW4.
The battle begins with a movie showing the gathering of the Allied/Coalition/Expeditionary Forces before Cao Cao informs you that you will be leading a unit of volunteer troops. Pressing Square during the latter conversation event allows you to review the conversation and replay lines from it which is honestly something I've never seen before except in Renpy games, but I don't play a lot of games other than Warriors games.
Just before the introductory battle screen, there is a war council with simplified voice lines that lay out the situation of the battle, the victory and defeat conditions, and some of the officers featured in the battle. The demo has been known to crash on the war council when you're getting low on RAM, so maybe don't have 20 Chrome tabs open while you play.
Under the Battlefield Information page, you will see that the enemy side has a lot of unnamed generic officers scattered all over. It's the equivalent of having subofficers named Officer in the PSP games or Unit Commanders in DW8. I suppose that's one way to increase the officer numbers. From there, you can view the biographies of the officers as well.
At the start of each battle, you can choose a companion officer to go with or you can play the battle alone. The officer you select also determines your starting position for the battle. For this demo, Xiahou Dun, Guan Yu and Sun Shangxiang are selectable. Presumably, they are the companion officers available for the initial chapters involving the Yellow Turbans and Dong Zhuo before you select which warlord to follow and the companion officers available will be that warlord's subordinates.
This demo gives you four types of weapons, namely the sword, the wheels, the podao and the crescent blade. The movesets appear to be a mix of play styles from previous games; the sword uses the classic 6-hit combo system with followups on the Charge/Strong Attacks, the wheels use the flow/trigger attack system seen in 9, and the podao and crescent blade utilise separate Normal/Charge attack strings and a strong (held) Charge attack seen in 6. Weapons have gimmicks as well like in 7/8 and can be changed during battle like 7/9. It takes some time to get used to it even for new players but it's just as well there are only nine weapon types that are usable.
Based on the "playable" characters seen, the remaining weapon types are the spear, gauntlets (gloves), pole, twin pikes (axes) and lance (serpent pike). There are generic officers that use clubs, pikes and throwing knives as well. Why aren't these weapons usable in the game?
You can also equip a gem that improves your attack in some way, two accessories that can improve your stats and a horse that has abilities of its own. Gems can be changed in battle while accessories and horses can't.
In battle, you're never going to get around the battlefield to save every officer, but that's okay given the difficulty of the enemy AI, unlike how it was in SW3. Morale affects the battle more subtly than how it was in the modern series games, like in DW8 where your allies just start dying when your morale is low. And speaking of the difficulty, this game is where I can definitively say that I can't read the dialogue boxes and focus on the gameplay at the same time all the time, regardless of whatever voice option I choose. The game does pause when messages come up (annoying though it may be) and you can review the battle log in the Pause menu, so it does help.
Aerial attacks are back to normal and you can also perform Charge Attacks while guarding or just as you evade (sidestep from) enemy attacks. Similar to SW4, guarding right as an enemy attack hits allows you to parry them and counterattack. You can also pursue enemies as well like in DW9. Evading just before you get attacked counts as a Perfect Evade and allows you to gain some Bravery.
Characters can perform Arts attacks (Special Skills/武芸) by pressing R1 and one of the face buttons, like in DW9, SW5 and WO4. Arts attacks are set per weapon and some of them involve physical attacks and shooting attacks aside from unique weapon attacks. Arts use up your Bravery Gauge, and if you're near an ally who is impressed by you, they can follow up your Arts with an attack (denoted by the section being shown in blue). Enemies may glow white (clear) or orange as they prepare for an attack, but they can be countered with a Special Arts attack that will disorient them. Enemies that glow red cannot be countered at all.
Holding down L2 allows you to access the Eyes of the Sacred Bird (霊鳥の眼), where time slows down to allow you to get a look at what's happening on different parts of the battlefield. This also allows you to order the troops under your command to do something, like fire a volley of arrows, charge in a particular direction, encircle an enemy officer, or go to a particular battle area (and call them back). Three commands can be set, though I wish there were four to balance out with the Special Skills.
Enemy officers will have a number of shields above their life bar, known as the Fortitude Gauge (外功). Attacking them when they're glowing or with Arts will gradually reduce it, and if the gauge is empty, the enemy officer will stagger and you can perform an assault which, depending on how much health they have left, is either a chain attack that increases power while you mash Triangle similar to the Storm Rush of DW8, or a finishing attack similar to the Mighty Strikes of SW4. I honestly wish they named those two differently.
As usual, Musou Attacks continue to be a staple in this game. The gauge is just as hard to fill as in an Empires game, but the normal Musou Attack can be performed when the gauge is filled to at least the indicated level and only that much of the gauge is used in each attack. Musou Attacks vary depending on the weapon equipped, like with SW5. The Musou Attacks in this game are simplistic but devastating, similar to how they were implemented in 7 and 8.
When the Musou Gauge is full, pressing L3 and R3 allows you to enter Rage Mode, also known as War God's Rage (武神覚醒). Rage Mode makes you invincible and you can perform as many attacks as you want, including Arts which use up the Musou Gauge instead. Pressing Circle or letting the Musou Gauge run out allows you to perform the True Musou Attack, which adds an extra attack at the start before transitioning to the normal Musou.
Your horse is now summoned by pressing L3 and you automatically mount onto it, but it's not as smooth as it was in 8. Pressing Triangle makes you leap off your horse and perform your Jump Charge to assault enemies. Pressing R1 allows you to dash with your horse, but you don't have to hold it down and it uses one unit of Endurance, which charges as you ride your horse or press the Circle button to cheer up your horse.
I mentioned before that you could choose a companion officer to accompany you in battle. They have a Musou (Swap) Gauge as well and when it's filled up to the indicated level, you can perform an Extreme (Double) Musou Attack that doesn't use up either gauge. When their Musou Gauge is full, you can hold Select (wait, on the PS5 it's the Options button now) to change into that character and use them temporarily. You can't perform a normal Musou Attack with them, but after about 30 seconds or if you activate it manually, they will go into Rage Mode, then after it runs out or if you activate it manually, they will perform an Ultimate Musou Attack (絶・無双乱舞) which is more powerful than a True Musou Attack and has the power to clear away hundreds of enemies. The gameplay features trailer also appears to show the protagonist performing an Ultimate Musou Attack, so it's unknown how it's going to be done for now. All in all, you can only use the "playable" characters for a minute at a time.
Towards the end of the battle, a large allied army will gather and they will charge toward the large enemy army. Officers, allied or enemy can deploy Grand Tactics which involve grand assaults; you can complete a timed goal to prevent an enemy tactic (which is either defeating a certain number of enemies or the officer ordering the tactic), and when an ally deploys a tactic, you just have to keep them alive for a minute.
Duels make a return in this game from 4 and 6. You can challenge an officer to or accept their request for a duel by pressing L1 and R1. You will have 50 seconds to beat the enemy officer in a makeshift arena with allies and enemies surrounding the two of you. Health is not affected, but the way in how duels are played is a tug-of-war system and when you win the tug-of-war, you can finish them off with an assault. If you lose, you'll lose most of your life to the point where you'll essentially be dead. On a side note, why are the enemy officers 6 feet tall and the protagonist is just 5'9"?
After defeating Hua Xiong and Li Jue, you'll fight Lu Bu and he is a tough nut to beat even on Historian difficulty. I was going to say that this game would be seppuku-worthy for Koei Tecmo if the actual game wouldn't let me go past Sishui Gate without defeating Lu Bu, but luckily Tomohiko Shō confirmed that it won't be the case.
If you die or your side is defeated, you can recreate the battlefield akin to pre-5, then you can choose to restart the battle from the beginning or a particular checkpoint, like in Warriors All-Stars or WO4. We won't know if there is an interim save option until the game releases for real.
The settings also allow you to make the HUD and/or the KO count invisible except for certain moments. Achieving 1000 KOs will show the words "Army of One" (一騎当千) on the screen and you still get called a True Warrior of the Three Kingdoms even though the game only just gets into the gist of the Three Kingdoms era.
On PC, the game also supports ultrawide (21:9) aspect ratio (for the first time), 4K resolution, 120 FPS and HDR. Keep in mind that even if you play on ultrawide, some aspects of the game will still be in widescreen, like the pre-rendered movies (which I'm sure is another reason why there isn't a way to customise the protagonist in this game). AMD FSR1/FSR3 and Intel (Arc) XeSS upscaling is also supported for those GPU architectures, but not NVIDIA DLSS upscaling. Well, Team Green fans, it's your turn to tell Koei Tecmo and Team Red fans to commit seppuku. Okay, for a bit of copium they might add it in later, but again, don't let Koei Tecmo use the budget or anything as an excuse for not supporting DLSS when they're already supporting upscaling on AMD and Intel Arc GPUs.
There is also a Steam Deck preset for graphics quality. Combine that with 720p resolution and you'll get the best experience at 30-40 FPS.
The PS5 version is also PS5 Pro Enhanced, that is if you're willing to pay upwards of $700USD for 4K ray tracing, AI upscaling, Wi-Fi 7, an extra terabyte of storage and a separate disc drive for $80USD, PS Portal be damned. As I'm sure many people have said, with the state of console gaming these days you might as well just play on a PC.
After playing the demo, it's obvious that Koei Tecmo have taken a new format for this game. It takes on elements of Western RPGs while also continuing the Warriors formula that fans know and love, incorporating elements from previous games. The difficulty has been brought back to classic era levels so achieving 1000 KOs does feel like an achievement rather than a staple.
The lack of character customisation or character playability are certainly disappointing, but let's face it, we'll never get anything like the modern era of Warriors games again without people complaining about it being "another one". Therefore, I hope that detractors, naysayers and sceptics can take a chance on this game to, at the very least, see how Koei Tecmo has come from the seppuku-worthy disgrace that was DW9.
I've probably described most of the game's gameplay in this post (I probably haven't gotten all the intricacies of it), so the actual retrospective for Origins may either be shorter or I may repeat what I've said about the demo. We'll see how things go.
Back in the TARDIS to the modern era next time as I actually get into Dynasty Warriors 7.
