Hacerle justicia a la música de los 80

Bruce Springsteen en un concierto en la década de los 80 (Fuse)

LA HABANA, Cuba.- Son muchos los de mi generación que detestan el rap, el punk, el trash metal y sus derivados y la música dance, que consideran que en los 80 “empezó a ponerse mala la música”.

En realidad, en los glamorosos 80 hubo de todo: cancioncillas baratas, intérpretes mediocres y hasta fraudes, como el de Milli Vanilli; pero también mucha buena música, discos fabulosos (como el Graceland, de Paul Simon, Nothing Like The Sun, de Sting, Brothers in Arms, de Dire Streist), y canciones de autor (Bruce Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp, Tracy Chapman, Jackson Browne) como en los mismísimos años 60.

El escritor y periodista cubano Joao Fariñas hace un minucioso recuento de esos años en su más reciente título, Una década de música: el sonido anglosajón de los 80, que fue presentado el pasado 4 de febrero en la Feria del Libro de La Habana.

La presentación del libro, que se efectuó a lleno completo en la sala “Alejo Carpentier” de La Cabaña, estuvo a cargo de un buen conocedor del tema, el escritor Francisco López Sacha, y contó además con la participación del guitarrista Luis Manuel Molina.

El nuevo libro de Fariñas, de 39 años, y que también es autor de El largo y tortuoso camino de los Beatles (2014) y Carlos Ruiz de la Tejera, la fuerza de la vocación (2015), viene a ser el complemento de Dos décadas de música: el sonido anglosajón de 1960-1980, publicado en el año 2011.

En los dos libros de Joao Fariñas sobre la música norteamericana e inglesa, ambos publicados por la Editorial Arte y Literatura, aparecen por orden alfabético los más destacados intérpretes de rock, jazz, soul, blues, country y de la música pop de los años 60, 70 y 80.

Dichos libros resultan de inestimable valor para los cubanos amantes de esos tipos de música, al aportarles información y ayudarles a organizar una especie de mapa del sonido de esa época y sus ejecutantes.

Especialmente útil y esclarecedor resultará para aquellos que, por no saber inglés o no lo suficiente para entender a los locutores de las emisoras de radio del sur de la Florida, en muchísimos casos no llegaron a saber los nombres de las canciones que les gustaban y quiénes las interpretaban.

Y si hablo de las emisoras de radio floridanas es porque durante los años 60 y gran parte de los 70 fue donde único los cubanos podíamos escuchar esa música, que había sido proscrita por el régimen de Fidel Castro por considerar que era “la música del enemigo imperialista, deformante e ideológicamente nociva”.

Primero fue la WQAM, o simplemente la “dóbliu”, como la llamábamos, a la que se sumaba la KAAY, de Little Rock, Arkansas, con aquel maravilloso programa de rock underground en las madrugadas, Baker Street. Después de 1977 serían la WGBS y la WKWF. Y las emisoras de FM, sin estática ni interferencias, donde la música sonaba maravillosamente bien, como en los discos, o mejor aún, si se trataba de los tocadiscos rusos. Pero esas emisoras solo las podíamos disfrutar si teníamos un radio Selena, una buena antena en la azotea y no había mal tiempo.

Para finales de los 70 ya no estaba prohibida la música en inglés, aunque era bien poca la que se ponía por la radio y seguían muy mal vistos los que la escuchaban, especialmente si eran melenudos.

Y en la TV cubana demoraron bastante en decidirse a poner en Colorama videos de otros artistas de habla inglesa que no fuesen los Bee Gees, Abba y Boney M.

Para el que no sabía el nombre de aquella canción o de la otra, o que grupo o cantante la interpretaba, ahí están los dos libros de Joao Fariñas, plenos de datos e información.

Si algún defecto se le puede señalar a Una década de música… es que por estar incluidos en libro dedicado a las dos décadas anteriores, no aparecen intérpretes que se iniciaron en los 70, pero tuvieron auge en los 80, como Foreigner, Dire Streist, Journey, REO Speed Wagon, The Little River Band o Kenny Loggins. Y eso hace que el que no haya leído Dos décadas de música: el sonido anglosajón de 1960-1980 pueda pensar que Joao Fariñas los obvió o se le escaparon. Hubiese sido conveniente volver a relacionar en este libro a esos intérpretes, o al menos a los más significativos y relevantes en los 80.
