Wizards in Space 2

Archivist Amana Rayes, reporting on an anonymous subject's vision while planeshifting.

"Before me lay a great expanse of iron, not unlike the surface of a planet. The metal surface was near-perfectly smooth and polished to shine, resulting in a bit of disorienting vertigo as I looked into the semi-flawless reflection of the red sky above.

But the sky was far from a simple red atmosphere. Clouds of varying colors hovered high above, accompanied by gears. The gears hung in the air, most were of such enormity that one could build a city upon them, where others were small enough a man would struggle to stand upon them.

The gears interlocked, most meshed gears normally, where others meshed perpendicularly.

Few gears contacted the ground, but where they did, great canyons of land were missing to allow the great mechanisms to turn hidden, deeper cogs.

Strangely, my first thoughts were not my own. I felt admiration, joy, pride, accomplishment, all as I stood before the greatest work of artifice I had ever seen.

And in a flash, I knew. Oh Eilhri I knew...

I saw the purpose of this great machine, this world-engine of unfathomable power. I saw the eons it had waited to be discovered.

This was no mere machine, it was Zyria, the Fate-Calculator, the great engine, the final work of the greatest maker this universe had ever known. Allimander's Magnum Opus was here, in the next plane.

It made perfect sense. What star would be safe enough to hide a machine like this in the orbit of? What wizard could beat the thought of not using it?

The silver earth beneath me shuddered as I fell from this world and back into my own. "

Commentary:

Though it would seem unlilely that the mythical machine known to legend as Zyria would be planeshifted, it is certainly possible. Assuming that the subject is correct, a large problem is coming for wizardkind. More research is required, but it seems that this discovery may be due to the currently not understood psychic phenomena caused by planeshifting. I keep an open mind, but the magnitude of this discovery requires that I maintain skepticism.

This is a bit of a different one compared to the first of the series. I wasn't quite sure what to write, so I just went with it. I'll have more normal stuff coming soon I promise.

I've decided on a tag as well, #Ixone Chronicles is the tag I will be using for this series, I haven't revealed what the name means yet, but I should at some point.

In the meantime hope you liked this, I wrote it to make sure my 'series' was actually a series.

Wizards in space: The Ixone Chronicles 3

Adrian Velrik walked along the surface of a dead world. The ground of Phaebos-6 was like black glass, it cracked in some sections to allow stone spires to plunge into the sky.

The world could never know life with its desolate atmosphere, but luckily, Adrian's rune-armor had been set to sustain a spell of breathless respiration. The armor was made of overlapping sheets of magically-reinforced metal and polymer painted a dark blue with light grey lines forming the logo of the Wrought Ember Mining Coalition on his shoulder. Etched into the surface were runes of shifting form and color that sustained the spells he cast upon it, and by extension, Adrian.

Adrian had come to the planet to investigate it for resources his people could use. Scans from the ship had not yielded anything promising, but those could not penetrate this black glass which covered approximately sixty percent of the world.

Taking out his circler, Adrian placed the robotic shape on the smooth, reflective ground. Quickly, the small machine produced a small stick of chalk and began to move in a (mostly) perfect circle. Once it had completed the circle, it started working inwards, providing the fourteen layers of the ritual inscription. After it finished, Adrian took up his own chalk, and began filling in the layers with arcane writings which would best channel the energy for this spell of detection.

With the circle complete, Adrian took up his will and channeled some of it into the ritual, providing the spell with the first push of power to carry it through the first layers. Once those layers were done, the ritual would be self-sufficient and continue on its own.

The outer layer of the circle burned with the light of the arcane, and suddenly, Adrian could see within the world. He saw veins and tunnels, he saw minerals and liquids. Last he saw the beating heart of the world.

Upon touching this center, Adrian felt his mind's eye burn. It hurt to look at such an outpouring of arcane energies, so out of instinct, he broke the circle with his foot, scuffing the chalk, and shattering the energy that held it together.

This world would do nicely.

After recovering from his experience, Adrian sent out an arcane broadcast from his mind to the ship, which sat in orbit like a moon. From where he stood, Adrian couldn't see the ship, as it was much too far away, but he felt it's presence in his mind like a thumb on a hand.

The chief communications officer, Faeli Arkham, responded to his signal with a telepathic sensation of affirmation.

Soon enough, the ship mounted the horizon and began to grow. It went from a black spec in the sky to a silhouette, and finally it hovered above him in the space of five minutes.

The acceleration on display would have crushed a crew not shielded by the warded hull of the Nemyha. The ship was old, one of the first of its class of scout cruiser. The Nemyha was a literal example of the ship of Theseus, all of its systems and hull panels had been replaced over the years it had been in service, its wards had been renewed dozens of times. Although the ship may have been old, its updates had brought with them the capability to match many of the more recent models. Adrian had served on the Nemyha for several years in various roles, by now he knew the ship in and out. It was home.

As the aged starship landed, and its thrusters powered down to the point that Adrian would have only been slightly singed without his armor by standing near it, he walked over to the airlock.

The ship stood on its end nearly a hectometer tall, and almost half that wide, its elegant form was curved all around it to feed into the wings and hills on its form to accommodate for aerodynamics and sensor clusters respectively. Its body was painted a clean blue with white letters making its name and Identity.

A sharp hiss, then a pop came from the airlock as the door opened, allowing four other crew to stride forth wearing similar, if not identical rune armor to Adrian's.

Chief among these newcomers to this world was the captain, Ita Jor, an Idirian woman, whose pale blue-grey skin shimmered with its own shifting rune layer.

"Captain, fellow crew, welcome to Phaebos-6!"

The captain addressed Adrian with her cold, artificial eyes, but spoke in a tone of warmth that always surprised him. "Thank you Adrian, I trust you've found something sufficiently valuable for us to dig for?"

"Valuable indeed, Captain, deeper arcane scans reveal this planet is possessed of a deposit of arcane energies beyond some stars! I am of the belief we should begin drilling at once."

...

I might write a continuation of this later, but I really needed to get something out there so that you can know I'm not abandoning this project. Lmk how I can improve dialogue, I always feel like it's either too eloquent (which may be more or less of an issue because the characters are almost all wizards, and thus nerds, so it might make sense for them to be pedantic) or too wooden.
