         fingertips  absentmindedly  brush  along  the  hangers  as  valeria  sifts  through  the  selection  of  clothing  .  thrift  shops  have  always  provided  a  certain  level  of  comfort  to  the  reaper  .  often  times  serving  as  stimulus  for  memories  that  seemed  long  forgotten  to  resurface  once  more  .  lips  are  twisted  up  in  thought  as  they  continue  to  browse  ,  stopping  short  and  awkwardly  clearing  their  throat  at  the  presence  of  the  werewolf  .  “  don’t  be  sorry  .  ”  they  smile  politely  .  “  i’m  just  browsing  .  not  really  looking  for  anything  in  particular  .  just  something  that  speaks  to  me  ,  i  suppose  .  ”  head  nods  towards  the  box  .  “  anything  good  in  there  ?  ”

Far Cry: Cull the Herd #0 review

The first issue of the manga is out! Here are my thoughts on it :)

Spoilers for Primal’s ending below and slight spoilers for the manga itself, but it’s pretty short and just the prologue so not much happens anyway.

So, I was wondering who the two teenagers on the cover were, and the answer is Antón Castillo on the right (who looks more like Diego, I think), and on the left… his sister Valeria.

Valeria Castillo is a new character, never mentioned in Far Cry 6 and created for the manga. We aren’t told if she’s older or younger than Antón, but it’s clear she has a strong and caring personality. I’m not sure she can be considered canon since it seems the game’s writing team wasn’t involved (their names don’t appear anywhere), but the idea of Antón not being an only child actually makes sense since he has a nephew!

As explained in the official description, Cull the Herd is about Batari, one of Primal’s two main antagonists, magically abducting some of the franchise’s iconic villains when they were still teenagers, making them fight against each other in prehistoric times, and… this is pretty much all that happens in this free “prelude”. In fact, the “battle royale” hasn’t even started yet.

The comic opens with Batari’s demise at the hands of Takkar, and I think the scene looks a little graphic for the manga’s rating (13+), but maybe it’s just me. As she’s mortally burnt and wondering why “evil always wins”, a mysterious, goddess-like being (possibly Suxli) speaks to her and decides it’s time to “play a game” to determine what the “nature of evil” is.

We then see a 13-year-old Antón working in Yara’s tobacco fields in 1967, as we know he was forced into labor by the revolutionaries. There are differences between the story told in the game and what we see in Cull the Herd, though, but it’s probably because canon doesn’t really matter in the manga.

Aside from the fact that Antón has a sister, it appears his father is still alive in the comic when, in Far Cry 6, he had already been executed at this point. On the other hand, although she only died in 2007 and always remained close to him, his mother Yolanda is never mentioned. We don’t see Antón’s pruning knife either, but maybe we will in future issues.

That said, again, I’ll have to refrain from focusing on the accuracy of the events presented in Cull the Herd too much since it’s just a semi-official crossover alternate universe, much like Captain Laserhawk (which I really enjoyed). Not everything is going to be faithful to the games, but since the manga series is a supernatural retelling of some of the characters’ stories, it’s not supposed to be.

This pilot is only a taste of what’s coming next, and in my opinion, it’s an effective teaser. I don’t know if the other issues will be free and fully colored as well, but I’m curious where the story is going to go, which characters will be involved, and what will happen to them. In my opinion, the story looks promising.

Don’t read Far Cry: Cull the Herd if you’re just interested in gathering more information about some of the Far Cry antagonists’ pasts; it’s clearly not canon. Now, if you’re a fan of the franchise, want to read a crossover story featuring reinterpretations of your favorite characters as teenagers, see how they survive in this nightmarish scenario, discover what “evil” is, and if it truly always wins, this manga may be for you :)

Frances Dubois:

Something about the whimsical instrumentals backed up with the haunting vocals almost reminds me of someone stuck in a loop. There's repetition in the chorus that solidifies that feeling. I also like the juxtaposition of the French lyrics, like the second singer is aware and has a desire to change. When I think of Frances, I envision someone in limbo and part of that is the inability to make a decision. She finds herself stuck, in a way, her anxiety makes the decision for her because doing nothing is something. Whilst Icarus has helped nudge her into making decisions such as aiding her in graduating, speaking to Atlas, and supporting her in her audition. there's still this internal desire to make that move on her own. The first time we see her do that is when she decides to kiss Icarus, which in a way, pushed her back into her loop as it didn't end well. As of current events, she's avoided him since.

Daniella Álvarez:

This song to me encapsulates someone who has had to be independent at a very young age. The beginning opens with spoken lyrics, "She asked me who's taking care of me, I said, 'I take care of me'" and whilst incredibly empowering, there's always that question of how did we get here? Dan is the eldest of two younger siblings. In fact, there's quite the age gap between her siblings and if we look at Valeria, she also looks just as youthful. Dan is the product of an unplanned pregnancy as well as a bit of a narcissistic mother. The disorderly environment in which she's been given, learning to be a caretaker of her siblings and the constant pressure of success has lead her to have self-sufficient character. Whenever I think about her dynamic with her friends, I'm reminded of this scene, and she's the glue that is trying to hold the chaos together.

Kai Castillo:

Christ this song is so good. The instrumentals backed up by the vocals, feels a bit somber. Throughout Tessellate, Kai hides behind the fact that he has these feelings towards Atlas and they've started to bubble over into jealousy as Atlas's relationship grows with Kai's sister, Taryn. I also love that there are a lot of comparisons here to Lucifer Morningstar and religious elements. Kai's relationship with his religion is somewhat of a paradox as he is a closeted gay man to his parents, his sister and church. In fact, he does a lot of things that would bring quite a bit disapproval. He's unforthcoming, somewhat suspicious because his secrets have given him a reason to be. His story is of one that falls from grace.

Atlas Dubois:

While Paul Julian Banks narrates a song about struggling with addiction, I noticed there's a bit of a different beat in comparison to the rest of Interpol's songs. The tempo is much slower, as if exhaustion has set in and we're barely moving along. When we meet Atlas, it's at the beginning of a fresh start, not really knowing what has happened prior. Slowly throughout, we pull back minor details that entail his complex struggles with addiction. What initially started out as a bit of fun, became all consuming, allowing any given opportunity to be a reason why he should use. The bridge of this song also discuss the contrast between himself and his partner discovering his addiction for the first time. There's also a change in his tone during that that I find to be so neat! It does remind me a bit of his relationship with Taryn. I do know that addiction lasts a lifetime, and that love doesn't solve it all, but I also know that right support is the most important.

valeria huffed, indignant. she did her best to maintain her composure, but it was hard when the argument felt so improbable to her. Hace unos años, mientras buscaba una forma de escapar de la realidad cotidiana, tropecé con Wattpad, como si de una puerta mágica se tratara. Este maravilloso rincón en línea se convirtió en mi refugio secreto, un lugar donde las novelas juveniles de fantasía cobraban vida. Como una ávida lectora de corazón, me enamoré de las historias de mundos encantados, poderes sobrenaturales y personajes valientes que luchaban contra las adversidades. Pero, ¿qué sucedió cuando decidí convertirme en escritora en este mundo lleno de posibilidades?

Explorando mi voz como escritora: Una llave para desbloquear mi imaginación

Wattpad se convirtió en mi propio castillo de sueños, donde las ideas fluían libremente y podía dar vida a personajes y lugares con solo un par de palabras. Empecé a escribir mis propias historias juveniles de fantasía y a compartirlas capítulo tras capítulo. Fue emocionante descubrir que mis palabras no solo eran leídas, sino también amadas y comentadas por jóvenes soñadores de todo el mundo. Sus reacciones y palabras de aliento me impulsaron a seguir adelante, a mejorar mi escritura y a explorar nuevos horizontes literarios.

Desde un inicio, me apasioné por la fantasía, por la increíble idea de crear mundos nuevos, mundos extraños, mundos retorcidos y olvidados en un sueño, gracias a todas esas ideas y sueños perdidos, decidí que sería escritora de fantasía.

No se los voy a negar, a pesar de que he escrito hasta la fecha 14 libros (sí, soy medio intensa a la hora de escribir) he publicado solo cuatro en Wattpad, pero cuatro de los cuales me siento sumamente orgullosa y cuatro a los cuales los lectores han llenado de visitas y de votos, cosa que me hace muy feliz.

La comunidad Wattpad: El clan de los soñadores

Una de las cosas más asombrosas de Wattpad es su comunidad, un grupo de soñadores apasionados por las mismas historias mágicas que yo. En este rincón virtual, escritores y lectores se unen para compartir su amor por las novelas juveniles de fantasía y brindarse apoyo mutuo. Me encontré rodeada de personas que comprendían mi obsesión por los mundos mágicos y los personajes memorables. A través de conversaciones en los foros, clubes de lectura y comentarios en los capítulos, hice amigos con los que compartía una conexión única: la pasión por la fantasía juvenil.

El poder de la retroalimentación: Encantados con las opiniones de los lectores

La retroalimentación se convirtió en un hechizo que me impulsaba a crecer como escritora. Los lectores dejaban sus comentarios en cada capítulo, compartiendo sus opiniones, emociones y sugerencias. Sus palabras de aliento, sus teorías y sus emociones compartidas con respecto a los personajes se convirtieron en mi combustible creativo. La conexión directa con los lectores no solo me ayudó a mejorar mi escritura, sino que también me permitió comprender qué elementos mágicos de mis historias resonaban más en sus corazones.
