It claims men are raped by woman just as much as women are raped by men. The only reason we don't know why is because they go underreported.

If that's the case, regardless of societal pressure men would be talking about this anways, and never bringing it up when provoked. As in, when women speak out against their assaults.

If that's the case, I think men would actually be taking precautions to be safe from women, I think men would talk about this more rather than the so called "male loneliness epidemic..."

Hello! So, the short answer is this article is nonsense and also factually inaccurate. The long answer has many parts which I enumerate below:

First, what does the article claim?

The primary argument in this article is that we should be counting "made to penetrate" (i.e., as in a woman forcing a man to penetrate her vagina with his penis, or other similar sex acts) as a type of rape. They argue that if you do so then statistics show that as many men as women are raped.

The conclusion of this argument (that statistics indicate as many women as men are raped) is factually inaccurate, even if we agreed to count "made to penetrate" as a form of rape. However, I will extend on this later, as first:

What is (and isn't) rape?

Depending on your jurisdiction (country, state, etc.) there may or may not be an actual crime called "rape" in the criminal code. In the USA, each state and Washington, DC has its own criminal code, in addition to the federal criminal code and a uniform code of military justice (UCMJ) for each branch of the armed forces. Beyond that, various agencies devoted to criminal statistics (FBI, CDC, BJS) all record data in slightly different ways.

The definition discussed (poorly) in the article, is from the CDC. The CDC publishes results from "The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey", which goes into significantly more detail than other reporting agencies [1].

The categories of sexual violence categorized by the CDC (rewritten slightly to simplify) are:

Rape -- completed or attempted unwanted vaginal, oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force or threats to physically harm and includes when the victim was too drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent (stats for each collected individually). They also note that penetration can be completed with a penis, fingers, or object; except for oral penetration which must be done with a penis.

Being made to penetrate -- when a victim was made to, or an attempt was made to make them, sexually penetrate someone without the victim’s consent because the victim was physically forced or threatened with physical harm, or when the victim was too drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent. Examples include a victim being made to penetrate someone vaginally, anally, or orally with his penis or being forced to perform oral sex on a woman.

Sexual coercion -- is unwanted sexual penetration (either direction) that occurs after a person is pressured in a nonphysical way.

Unwanted sexual contact -- unwanted sexual experiences involving touch but not sexual penetration (e.g., being fondled, groped).

Sexual harassment in a public place -- verbal harassment in a sexual way that made the victim feel uncomfortable.

They also aggregate responses for the first four categories into "contact sexual violence".

The author of the USAToday article argues that "made to penetrate" offenses should be reclassified as "rape". This is a gross misunderstanding of the CDC classification system. They have made a very deliberate choice here to break these types of sexual violence down into distinct categories in order to better demonstrate differences between groups.

Other sources report only on a broader classification of sex crimes, usually either a measure equivalent to the CDC's "contact sexual violence" measure or a measure that combines rape, sexual coercion, and made to penetrate.

The US code criminal code and accompanying sentencing guidelines detail two categories of sex crimes: sexual abuse which includes criminal sex acts (roughly corresponds to CDC items 1, 2, and 3) and abusive sexual contacts (roughly corresponds to CDC item 4). In addition, they specify assaults are aggravated when they involve force, threat of death/serious bodily harm/kidnapping of the victim or another person, or forcible/unknowing administration of intoxicant to render the victim unconscious or nearly so (roughly corresponds to CDC items 1 and 2).

I will not be going through each state's criminal codes but the ones I did look at appear to either: follow the federal code's example or create separate offenses (e.g., rape, sodomy) and then classify them as the same "degree" of offense.

Ultimately, in reference to criminal proceedings the determining factors for sentence length guidelines appear to be: if the victim is a child, if the offense is aggravated, if the victim is grievously injured, and if the offender is a repeat offender. Considered alone, a crime being rape vs made to penetrate doesn't appear to make a difference in sentence length.

So, why is the author of the USAToday so bent out of shape?

They appear to be angry about the "expansion" of the rape definition to include non-forcible offenses. (Although, based on the premise of the article, I imagine they would have been equally upset if the old definition "the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will" was retained.)

I am very curious to know which of the "expansions" they specifically object to. The expansion to include anal or oral penetration? To include threats of physical harm? To include penetration of objects other than the penis? Or maybe just the inclusion of "when the victim was too drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent"?

There's also an important note here, that despite common claims to the contrary, being "too drunk, high, drugged, or passed out" does not include "sex while a partner is intoxicated" unless that partner is unable to consent, which most commonly means the victim was either unconscious or very nearly so. In some jurisdictions, even this will only apply when the intoxicant was either forced or unknowingly given to the victim, known as the voluntary intoxication caveat [2]. It’s inconceivable to me that someone would genuinely be trying to argue that having sex with someone while they’re unconscious isn’t rape, so I assume the author must not have actually read the legal codes/CDC definitions. (Side note: there's also generally rules defining sexual acts with individuals unable to consent due to mental disability or age as rape. The CDC didn’t include this in their definition because their results are based on surveys of adults in the US.)

All in all, I'm hard pressed to imagine which of these situations the author would genuinely like to claim isn't rape.

And with all of that: the author's first misinterpretation/misrepresentation of CDC data. They appear to think the CDC is counting coercion and intimidation in the "rape" data rather than in the "sexual coercion" data. I assume they simply did not actually read the report they are attempting to analyze, since I imagine you'd be hard-pressed to miss this otherwise.

Okay, but I think that the definition of rape should include everything the CDC calls rape, sexual coercion, and made to penetrate. If we look at all of those offenses together do we see equal rape rates for men and women?

No :) this brings us to misinterpretation/misrepresentation of the data #2. Let's look at the most recent (2016/17 report, published in 2022) CDC sexual victimization report.

The issue with trying to compare total counts for these three categories is that summing them gives you a significant over-count of victims. This is because many people report victimizations of more than one crime. For example, 27% of women report experiencing rape in their lifetime. Breaking that up we see: 22% experienced completed forced penetration, 16% experienced attempted forced penetration, and 17% experienced alcohol/drug-facilitated penetration. If we didn't have that overall 27% figure, summing these values would have suggested that 55% of women experience rape (or 39% when we exclude attempted rape). Obviously, this is a significant over count.

So, what can we compare?

Well, we can can compare across single offense categories for men and women. With this we see that, in their lifetime:

27% of women and 4% of men experience rape

11% of men are "made to penetrate" (not estimated for women, previous estimates put the percentage around 1%)

24% of women and 11% of men experience sexual coercion

48% of women and 23% of men experience unwanted sexual contact

30% of women and 11% of men experience sexual harassment in a public place

To make a striking point, let’s create a possible range of prevalence estimates using the summing method (where the floor is the highest percent for any single category and the ceiling is the sum of each category), the expanded definition of rape from above would apply to anywhere from 27% to 52% of women and anywhere from 11% to 26% of men. Based on this, the ceiling estimate for men (26%) would still be lower than the floor estimate for women (27%).

A more accurate comparison would be between contact sexual violence experiences (includes CDC items 1, 2, 3, and 4 and would encompass both sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact per the US legal code). This measurement is 54% for women and 31% for men.

The article's claim that women and men reported rape and made to penetrate at the same rate relied on the 12-month prevalence estimate. This measurement is much less robust, and I generally just ignore it for prevalence estimates; it's best used, I think, for comparisons across time. As an example of this, the data I'm reporting from reports a 12-month prevalence difference of 2% for rape for women and 1% for made to penetrate for men. Clearly, these 12-month estimates are less stable for estimating prevalence, if the women’s rate can be nearly identical to the men’s rate one year and double the men’s rate another year.

In addition to this, the proportion of male victims reporting only female perpetrators was much lower than the proportion of female victims reporting only male perpetrators. (I have previously discussed the issues with obtaining perpetrator prevalence rates from victimization data, so I won't go into this further.)

Okay, what about the rest of the article?

Well, the author references a study using non-probablity/non-random sampling to try and suggest there's a much higher rate of sexual victimization among men than previously found. I've talked before about why this is a problem. The authors of that study are actually not the worst, since they explicitly acknowledge in their discussion that "recruitment strategies ... were not random, thus limiting generalizability". So, bad USAToday author for misrepresenting their study.

The one actually interesting point is about sexual victimization at juvenile detention centers. I would need a whole other post to appropriately dive into that complicated (and sensitive) topic however. Suffice to say that his commentary on this is also partially inaccurate and definitely misleading.

The rest of the article is anecdotal, un-sourced, and essentially seems to be him railing about feminists and also anti-rape initiatives on college campuses.

I've discussed how female crimes aren't under-reported in the past. Rape in general is under-reported, but female-on-male rape is not significantly under-reported in comparison to male-on-female rape. In general, I agree that if there was a substantial number of men being victimized by women, we'd see an effect of this on/in society.

If you meant to say 2014, observed changes in statistics may have been impacted by the FBI's (extremely belated, like, behind every single other agency ever) change in rape definition from "carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will" to "penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim".

What about male suicide rates? The male loneliness epidemic?

Men are more likely to commit suicide, as described in the article you linked to. However, women are either equally or more likely to attempt suicide and have suicidal thoughts. (Also discussed in the same article, specific rates vary by source).

Loneliness is a pretty serious problem, particularly among the elderly. However, it's not a "men's problem", it's a "human people problem" [3]. The specific statistics vary by age group, but, overall, women and men appear to experience loneliness at similar rates.

Depends on what you mean by credible. mediabiasfactcheck.com rates USAToday as left center and mostly factual due to "editorial positions that slightly favor the left" and "editors missing fabricated stories in the past". Of course, reliance on this rating requires you to trust the people behind mediabiasfactcheck. I've found them to be ... somewhat credible. They do best with sources that are firmly (USA) democrat or republican oriented, however. For example, they also rate Feminist Current as "mostly factual" for the "promotion of transphobia" despite no failed fact checks in the past five years. Further cases like this one and related issues damage their credibility. Unfortunately, I really don't have a special way to determine credible sources. My best advice is honestly to look at many different sources, including ones you don't agree with, and critically engage with the content of each of them.

In reference to this article specifically, the more important factor in this case is the "opinion" article flag at the top of the page. This means that someone, who doesn't have to be affiliated with the source, wrote an article that the source is hosting. There's many reasons why they would agree to do so, so speculating isn't very helpful. Researching the author can help establish professional credibility (is he a reporter? a public offical? just some guy?), but it's important not to stray into ad hominem attacks (i.e., check out the author to determine credibility, but focus arguments about article on the content of the article).

In this case, the author is "Glenn Harlan Reynolds" a law professor at the "University of Tennessee College of Law" and writer of the "Instapundit" blog. mediabiasfactcheck rates it as a "questionable source" for "promotion of propaganda, conspiracy theories, the use of poor sources, a failed fact check, and a lack of transparency with ownership". Reynolds has also been disciplined for the "promotion of violence" over social media. This suggests to me that he lacks credibility, an opinion I'd support by his clear misunderstanding and/or misrepresentation of data sources.

Hello. I read your post about why Hawks is the worst character in MHA and had some thoughts. Do ignore this if you want to, seeing as the post was from like eight months ago and it’s long :)))

Hawks using BJ’s body is to deceive the villains into believing the number 3 hero is dead, deceive them in hopes that he’ll gain their trust which is the whole point. Him doing so is a carefully well planned out plan that in fact does succeed and not anything that takes away from his character. You mention this right before the Twice part which I take as you trying to build up how shitty you believe he is before you actually say why you despise him. Doesn’t really make sense. Do you think that’s a bad plan? How does him doing that have anything to do with being a bad character. He does so with the consent of BJ obviously, I doubt he knocked him out and shoved into a duffel bag.

You state that you don’t consider anything about Twice villainous as he 1) doesn’t kill anyone in the series. Does him killing that one hero who apprehends Toga and Mr. Compress after his encounter with Hawks not count? The one he repeatedly stabs with a knife. He’s also killed many other villains during My Villains Academia Arc though these can be regarded as self defense. Even if he may not kill people with his own bare hands, he chooses to support and aid a group he knows are villains and are evil. He is, if not directly, indirectly killing people.

Hawks doesn’t ask Jin to join the heroes like you said but tells him to atone for his crimes and start over, even offering him his help, and the ‘potential’ he talks about is the potential he sees in him of him truly being a good person. Hawks says that the true nature of someone appears when they’re cornered. He’s believe Twice is a good person because of his willingness to help others, in this case, his friend when he was backed into a corner. You state that Hawks asks for a fight which simply isn’t true. Hawks’ main goal is to apprehend Twice cause 1) he’s a villain, one of Japan’s most wanted to be exact and 2) because of the effects Twice’s power can have on the ongoing war. He deems him the most dangerous which is why he’s after him.

Hawks asks Jin to come quietly and Jin refuses that and then Hawks tells him that he doesn’t want to fight him, That’s the order it went in.

Hawks only attempts to kill him after he refuses to cooperate and begins to fight.

Let’s move on to Twice. Yes he’s an outcast, yes he was a victim of the system, yes he feels like the league has always welcomed him even though he feels all he’s done is cause trouble (death of Mange during the Shia Hassaikai Arc ) and be unhelpful ( that whole thing about him not being able to duplicate the quirk- destroying bullet during MVA arc) but that doesn’t justify any of his actions. Twice isn’t some 5 years who doesn’t know right from wrong. Sure this may be the only group who’s helped him and he can now hang around, seeing as they’re all criminals and have that in common but no one should be surprised as to why any hero would be after him. It’s may not be explicitly stated that he stands for what Tomura and AFO have in mind, but aiding the league for the sole reason of ‘oh they’ve helped me, let me help them even if they’re gonna take over the world’ doesn’t make him less innocent. Twice's willingness to trust and befriend others due a past he can relate to them with is one of the things that makes him a likable character. It’s through this that he’s able to trust Hawks and why his betrayal to him was that much more bitter.

Did Twice deserve better? Yes, but not from Hawks cause all he was his job of protecting people. Twice is one of the many characters whose perspectives we get to see and as a villain too which is even better because this runs hand in hand with one of themes build into Deku’s character which understanding why villains are the way they are. (The analyzation of Twice through this lens is way too long and a bit off topic so forget that.)

From the reasons you’ve listed, your dislike for Hawks doesn’t seem to come from him but rather the sadness you feel over Twices death. Killing is never okay however Hawks did the right thing in stopping a villain that could lead mass murder.

SO! In season 4, episode 1, Of Criminal Minds, we meet the British lady that Aaron Hotchner "liassed" with. She looks A LOT like Haley right?? And we can tell that mr. Disaster bi Aaron is smitten, cause blonds apparently are his "thing".

Now, at the end of the episode she dies on the operating table. Haley dies in later seasons. And if that ain't some painful fucking foreshadowing I dont know what is.

Aaron hotchner was written to be hurt, abandoned, and beaten down by life. And the simple fact that he can keep his son... that's the only happiness he'll ever have, Hotch was only ever written to be better than his father when everything in his life was pushing to make him worse than a monster.

This was such a good movie, way better than I expected from the online ratings. I feel like it deserved more and I totally blame the false advertising here. Thanks to the summary, I got into all this expecting a thriller and it’s not one at all, so I see how people might be disappointed. With that said, this movie is just my niche and I prefer it by far to any older femme fatale bs that they were suggesting instead. It’s such a quiet, human movie, very hopeful, all about healing from a grim past and the sins of our parents. If you are looking for action and mystery, this is definitely not for you, but if you are a fan of Colin Morgan, gorgeous scenery, soft music and human stories, then this is a full win. Colin is fantastic, as always, and I warmly recommend watching.

maybe. Maybe you are right. But, me and you both are not here to discuss Horikoshi's plan for his characters. I won't pretend I know where the story is going and even if I did, it would probably be just as delusional. What I can tell you though, is that, in my opinion, and please do not take this an offence, what you said is a load of bullshit.

Let me explain before you throw me to the wolves:

The story, from what I get is just now nearing its apex, which means that the whole ordeal of what happened in the last arc (let's call it, PFL vs Heroes because for the life of me I can't remember the name of the place in this moment) is a pre context to what is going to happen right now. PFL vs Heroes has the function to introduce 2 things: villains redeeming arc (or also: AfO being the only real villain of BNHA) and the crumble of society as we know it (heroes retiring and all that crap). Which also means that this, THIS PART, is the origin of what actually is the main arc of the story and which (may, in the long run) might be the why and how of Deku being the N1 Hero in a new society (I talked about this here).

This said, it should appear clear how 'at this point' you mention means jackshit in the timeline. We just now discovered that Dabi, one of the forefront members of the League and Front, is actually the long-thought-dead son of current hero N1 Endeavour. What is then the whole point of introducing Touya just to do nothing with it? Rei has been dismissed from the hospital, Shouto has accepted that Touya is alive and that they might be more similar than he thinks and even the same Enji knows that if he does not try and save the son he already failed to save once there is no redeeming for him.

Which brings me to my next point: if the same Enji knows this, and in light of the fact that Dabi is willing to die in order to expose the abuse that lead him to actually become a villain, what is the point of then just leaving Dabi be? Like, coincidentally if Endeavour does nothing about this situation not only he lets his son die twice, but he also inherently tells that he does not deserve redeeming. In basic words, the only possibility for Endeavour to actually redeem is to save Touya. His redeeming means that he saves a villain. Does it make sense for you to make this whole plot in order to just drop it afterwards and say 'nah, fuck this, i built a whole plot to actually show how society fucks people them up and then destroy that society just to let these people being fucked by society again?'? Cause for me it does not.

Maybe in your eyes they cannot be saved, but remembers what Touya says here:

He is right. All the heroes are as dirty as they are. And maybe some of them are better than others, but always remember that these villains have so many reasons to be the way they are.

Plus: if you think the LoV is unredeemable, then you must think the same of Endeavour and Hawks (who are currently N1&2), you must also think that BJ is an hypocrite (in regard to him not wanting Touya to expose N1) and that All Might, as Dumbledore, is a caring piece of shit because of what he did to Izuku.

P. S. I don't think that redeeming the villains of the story is condoning their actions. It's actually trying to say that everybody makes mistakes. It's okay to make them. But you have to acknowledge them and want to correct them, in order to be saved. This is also another reason why I think that AfO, after all, is the only villain of the story.

You have also to understand that Horikoshi does not want his villains to change their minds after talking to them. Why would they? What is the point? Why should you believe anyone in the system that fucked you over repeatedly and then told you that someone will come save you and never did? I, for one, would never trust anything that comes from mouth of anyone in that society, be it good or bad. They condone abuse, corruption and neglect, so who are the bad people here? Furthermore, it's not even about changing their minds, because this is not about perspective, but UNDERSTAND OF WHY THE FUCK THESE SOULS DECIDED THAT THE ONLY WAY OF THEM GETTING THROUGH THEIR MESSAGE WAS THROUGH VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION. Like, they do not need to change their minds. They need to be held together and said that it is okay that they turned out this way because it was not their fault and actually show them why was that not the right way. If they want redemption they will get it. But it's really up to them to do it, however, the fact that they need to be given a choice is absolute. You cannot accuse anyone of not being able to be saved or redeemed if you do not give them a choice to.

Finally, onto the threat to Japan part, I think the threat that AfO poses for Japan and for the LoV (who are puppets in AfO's hands, unless they decide to free themselves) and especially Shigaraki is way more dangerous. You have to separate those actions from the LoV. Liberating criminals is AfO's doing in Shig's body. He does not want to be controlled, but he also cannot sometimes surrender to it. AfO, if he does not need any of them anymore will literally just toss them away. After all, he kept the LoV as it was for Shigaraki, and Shigaraki was strumental to his plans because AfO wants a new body and a new quirk for himself. He needs to be stopped. The others need to be saved (of they choose to). But that was the point that Toga made in that famous panel:

where is the line you draw at being possibly saved? Isn't it enough for you that they are human?

If it isn't, well, I don't know what to say.

I hope this finds you well, and yeah, remember that a choice should be always offered, a hand always out forward (as Izuku did with Bakugō): it's up to them whether they want to catch that hand, but It would be absolutely morally wrong not even try to just because you labelled them as 'not savable'. Gays, bisexuals, men who are women on the inside, women who are men on the inside, people who throw gender to the wind entirely, couples made of more than 2 people, etc. And you are certainly not the first soul he’s met that isn’t interested in carnal relations.

·         Basically, with him, its like dating any gen z- he doesn’t care about losing out on sex! He accepts you and just wants you to feel safe and comfortable being yourself around him.

·         As long as he still gets to cuddle you (LOTS) and give you all-over-the-face kisses, (Meaning: Worship you) he’s happy XD Just lots of non-sexual affection.

·         Lots… and lots… of affection. He’s obsessed with it, really. Physical and verbal.

Hades:

·         Hades is a God- the fact that asexual individuals exist is not a surprise to him in the slightest like it is with a lotta other Disney Villains. Its like ‘Righty then’ and you move on with your day.

·         Hades is not as hypersexual as his flirting may sometimes imply (He is most c e r t a i n l y not at Beetlejuice’s level, anyway)- he’s far more invested in his desires to take over Olympus and that is more at risk of destroying your relationship then the lack of sex in it.

·         If you are willing to do it with him, though, he’ll be careful and slow and will stop with ease the moment you decide you want it to stop where it is.

Professor Ratigan:

·         Ratigan is a man of science- and that includes psychology, as well.

·         He quickly realises that if you two want kids and you don’t want to have sex with him to do it (If you have a functioning female reproductive system), then there’s always adoption, or other a number of other choices. Or you might not want children at all.

·         He also understands that different minds (And libidos) work differently and the fact that yours doesn’t want sex is neither a personal choice on your part, or a fault in any way. This is one of those times in Ratigans life that he realises how stupid the rest of the population is compared to his own genius criminal mind- how can anyone not understand this? Imbeciles.

·         He didn’t fall in love with your ass anyway, so no worries.

I felt like the plf war was rushed

1.Plf advisors getting hype but no payoff

2.Only miruko, Momo, and Kirishma got time to shine

I don't know if I feel like it was rushed, per se--it's by far the longest arc in the story so far by number of chapters, and would be even if you cut off the Tartarus jailbreak and the entirety of the hospital aftermath. What it absolutely does feel like to me is unbalanced.

You note that the "war" feels more like a raid, and you're right. As a caveat, it's worth keeping in mind that "Paranormal Liberation War" as a name for the arc in question is entirely an invention of the fanbase. To the best of my knowledge, the reasoning for the name was that big action shonen series like BNHA (Naruto, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, etc) always have a war arc, so what we were seeing in the lengthy, mass combat confrontation with the PLF had to be HeroAca's equivalent. It's not a term that's in the manga itself, however, not called as such by the characters, not referred to as such by Horikoshi or his editors, not even namedropped in chapter or volume titles. If it feels like a raid, that's probably because that's what it was intended to be.

And that's the problem, really. This arc shouldn't have been about a couple of raids; it should have been about a war.

(Below the cut: a bunch of fired-up complaining. Uses some harsh language, and talks about both injuries and deaths we did see and some we logically should have.)

From the outset, we were told that the resources Shigaraki had amassed were "on par with, or even stronger than" the resources of the hero-saturated society. Yet, we're expected to believe that a force that strong is so easily taken down by a single coordinated set of raids? Yes, the heroes had the benefit of surprise, but there's just so much that doesn't work for me.

First off, and to get this out of the way, it's ridiculous that the heroes even had the benefit of surprise. The MLA had an unknown number of hero double agents. They had people in the government; they had people in the infrastructure. This is an organization that had been living undercover completely unsuspected for multiple generations--how did the HPSC ever manage to carry out a massive, country-wide investigation on such a secretive group and coordinate multiple simultaneous, comprehensive raids without a single person finding out and alerting the higher-ups over a period of only three and a half months?

When exactly did Hawks have time to go and revive Best Jeanist--which he tells us he did personally--such that none of the bugs and micro-cameras he was covered with picked up on it, and both he and BJ could be back in the positions they needed to be in for the raid to begin?

How did Skeptic find out about the raid such that he only discovered it at the last possible second and not minutes, even hours, before it kicked off? How did hundreds of heroes (and even "hundreds" is being conservative, given the fact that they had seventeen thousand people to detain) close in on the villa without anyone from the PLF noticing, either Skeptic with his information network or mundane precautions like people on watch?

Even granting the heroes their surprise advantage--which I don't want to--if the advisors were all supposedly "stronger than the average hero," why didn't we see any of them winning? Okay, yes, Hose Face beat Midnight, but he had every possible advantage in that "fight"; I hardly count it as some big impressive defeat that shows us that the villains were holding their own.

Here's another thing: the MLA styled themselves as an army--they were demonstrably trained in troop tactics. When we saw them in Deika, even their nameless on-the-ground people were capable of coordinating with each other on the fly in response to the movements of the enemy, as we saw come up repeatedly:

Yeah, they were off-guard at first, but as soon as the advisors made the front line (which, you'll note, was immediately), that disadvantage really should have begun eroding. Certainly once Geten--Geten! The number one MLA member most willing to disregard collateral damage! And there he was being a proper leader!--got to the front and started yelling orders, we should have seen the PLF rallying, and I can't imagine any sensible justification for the tides not turning when a) Re-Destro showed up to occupy the highest-ranked hero on the field, b) a bunch of heroes peeled off to try to stop Machia only to get trampled for their efforts, and c) Trumpet got dug out.

You know who don't style themselves as an army, though? Heroes. Oh, they get some basic lessons in cooperation as students, but the extent of such lessons we see is stuff like "why it's important for heroes to have signature moves"--so that on group missions, their reputations will precede them and fellow heroes will already know their shtick. U.A. teaches the odd lesson plan that involves the kids fighting in groups, but there's a huge difference between you and 3 to 6 of your buddies fighting a similarly-sized group in a practice fight, or a handful of heroes teaming up to take down some criminal low-lives, and the mass combat scenario that was the raid. For heaven's sake, look at our closest other equivalent: the raid on the Hassaikai base. At every turn in that encounter, the heroes let themselves get split up and picked off, winnowing down their numbers. It's even explicit in the narrative that hero team-ups were, in the age of All Might, uncommon, and heroes are only just beginning to adjust to fighting in teams. The erstwhile MLA should have had the advantage there.

As to Machia's defeat, I think the big problem with it is not how it happened, per se, but the timescale involved. The plan itself was sound enough, and even with all the kids' efforts, it still took Machia reaching Shigaraki and not getting any new orders to follow to really do him in. Given what we can extrapolate about his movement speed, though, I just don't think the kids should have had time to set all those traps, especially given how much of that equipment would have had to be fabricated by Momo on the fly. I know she's gotten stronger and all, and good for her, but you're telling me that in the four months between Joint Training and the raid, she went from passing out because she created a bag of goodies and one (1) cannon to being totally fine and still able to coordinate her fellow students while cranking out 23 jars of sedative, dozens of feet of rope/cable, multiple fire-resistant coats, explosives they somehow had time to bury, and three cannons?

For fuck's sake, Jirou gave Machia's ETA as under ten seconds. Yeah, Mount Lady slowed him down, but "only a little"--how much time could she possibly have bought them, that the kids were able to to coordinate and enact everything that plan involved?

You guys, go read this post by @codenamesazanka. Machia is so fast. So unbelievably, incredibly fast. "Twice as fast as the fastest train in the world" fast. "Horikoshi clearly did not stop to think about the distances involved here" fast. Three miles in ten seconds fast. It would have been hard enough to square with the needs of the plot that the kids were sufficiently far from the villa to have the kind of time they needed to swing Momo's plan at all, but Horikoshi explicitly letting Machia get right on top of them before the kids even start just makes it completely impossible for me to credit. Machia clearly being slower aboveground than he is when burrowing does not make that much difference to my suspension of disbelief.

My other big complaint? More people should have died, for real. The PLF warriors would not have been holding back. They were ready and willing to kill anyone they came up against. The heroes did have to hold back, because heroes, as we're told over and over again, are not supposed to kill, no matter how dire the circumstances. That difference in ability to exercise force should have been yet another significant advantage for the PLF. I could write an entire list of characters that I think could have reasonably been killed during the raids. That wouldn't be to say that I think any individual, specific character on that list should have died, just that, based on the parameters as they were presented to audience, some number of them should have.

I mean, honestly. How did Horikoshi wanna show us Gang Orca's unmoving claw in the wake of Machia's passage and not have Gang Orca on the list of the dead? How did Fat Gun run right into a mass melee and still have enough fat left over afterward to survive getting trampled by a walking mountain? How did Thirteen survive not getting pulled out of the hospital basement when Shigaraki's Decay hit? How did Trumpet survive getting a staircase dropped on top of him? How did Gran Torino survive a fist through his tiny old man chest cavity?

I could go on and on, but it's not just about the deaths, either. I'm not saying that Kamui Woods necessarily should have died by swinging himself face-first into a blast of blue fire, but I am saying that he should have been out of commission for longer than three goddamn days. You bet your ass I'm saying that after telling us that Hawks' weak point is fire, making us watch him spend at a solid minute or more with his wings wholly enveloped in Dabi's 2000 degree flames, and having Dark Shadow exclaim that his back is completely burned away, Hawks should never have grown his wings back, much less so quickly that they were already visible under his shirt a single day later.

More deaths, more maiming--heck, even more retirements. I'm not saying I love that kind of thing in my fiction--I don't, actually. I think an overreliance on it is a sign of edgelordy nonsense. But the scenario that we had demanded to be treated with the kind of gravity that would have led to such an outcome. To set up a conflict like the raid and have the villains only barely be able to scrape a partial escape, to try to tell us that Shigaraki's victory in Deika granted him such a terrifyingly powerful force only to have them lose every battle they got into, to tell us this was a blow that shook Hero Society to its core, only to be so unwilling to kill or retire any heroes the audience cares about that Midnight is literally the only significant loss… It doesn't work. None of it works.

I don't have much to say on which characters did or didn't get a highlight. I think there were a few more people than you listed that got some good scenes--Tokoyami and Uraraka both got material I liked quite a bit; Dabi famously out-trended the U.S. presidential election on Twitter when he (literally) came clean, and Mr. Compress gave us some wonderfully interesting and characteristically opaque material to chew on. On the whole, though, adding more character moments would only have been dragging out the problem: the scale of the PLF's threat and the HPSC's chosen method of dealing with it are simply incompatible with the feeble "neither side truly won or lost" resolution we got.

I neeeever am bothered by people asking for recommendations.  Those are my favorite asks because I am nothing if not in love with my own opinions, lol

Books

Obviously, The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn, the best Bridgerton book, because I’ve been blogging about it lol.  If you haven’t read it, it’s basically “rake tries to seduce the beauty of the ton, beauty’s older sister cockblocks him, he realizes that He Is Into It” 

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne is a classic.  Very light and fluffy contemporary, two people who’ve always hated each other begin competing for the same job and fall in love.

Kate Quinn’s Mistress of Rome series is a saga and the initial big ship of the first book (which you do have to read lol) is not enemies to lovers.  However, the NEXT ship which dominates the last two books of the series (which is four books long, and tbh... I recommend the second book but it’s a prequel and can be skipped technically) is SOOOOOOO GOOD.  It’s really “childhood friends to young lovers to SEVERE ENEMIES still secretly in love” and it’s literally epic lol.  Essentially, the series is set in Ancient Rome and Sabina (very bitchy Roman noblewoman) and Vix (child of a former gladiator, soldier) are friends who I think lose their virginities to each other?  And are in love as kids.  But then she fucks him over and marries the emperor.  Who he actually begins to loyally serve!  But he haaaates Sabina because she.... constantly backstabs him lol.  But he also looooves Sabina and gets off on everything she does.  And she wants him so badly.  And it is delicious.  And I live for it.

Both of the Evie Dunmore books I’ve read, Bringing Down the Duke and especially A Rogue of One’s Own are very enemies to lovers.  In Bringing Down the Duke it’s a bluestocking versus a duke who for political reasons is her enemy.  In A Rogue of One’s Own it’s another bluestocking versus a rake who has known her basically all their lives.  They have to begin working together and fall in looove.

Sarah MacLean LIVES for this trope lol.  Her first true enemies to lovers was Twelve Scandals to Start to Win An Earl’s Heart, in which the heroine is a scandalous young woman and the hero is a duke determined to avoid scandal--and he rebuffed her before the book began, so they hate each other.  But he also has a massive boner around her, of course. 

My favorite MacLean book, A Rogue By Another Name is another “childhood friends turn enemies to lovers”.  The leads, Penelope and Bourne (last name lol) were best friends as kid and he basically fell off after life set in.  Her family now has hold of his ancestral lands, and Bourne essentially blackmails Penelope into marrying him so that he can get those lands, after which she DESPISES him even though they had..... extremely great sex lol.  It’s SUPER GOOD, and it involves borderline voyeurism, which is great.

Then No Good Duke Goes Unpunished is very enemies to lovers.  The heroine was set to become the hero’s stepmother--then he woke up covered in blood with her missing. He then finds out, after years of being despised by society as a presumed murderer, that she is very much alive with a fake identity lol.  It’s WILD.

The Rogue Not Taken is an enemies to lovers roadtrip romance.  The heroine thinks the hero is a horrid rake who purposefully ruins marriages.  He thinks she’s a stuck up brat.  They end up journeying together and he eats her out in a moving carriage.

Theeen there’s Daring and the Duke.  The hero literally thought the heroine was dead (MacLean loves this) and is OBSESSED with her, but she hates him because the man who raised them both basically pitted them against each other after their days of being childhood sweethearts.  It’s very dark and delicious, and there are blow jobs!  Blow jobs don’t happen enough in romances, especially historical romances.  More BJs!  They are fun!

If you’re interested in a dark and BONKERS romance, Desperate Measures by Katee Robert is a retelling of Disney’s Aladdin about a modern Jafar and Jasmine getting together after he takes over her father’s criminal empire.  It’s definitely extremely explicit and a bit fucked up.  The book comes with content warnings; the first sex scene is dubcon.  (Like you’re reading from her perspective and she WANTS IT but she says no.)

Beach Read by Emily Henry is a cute contemporary in which the hero is a literary author and the heroine is a romance novelist.  They find themselves in neighboring beach houses and basically challenge each other to write in the other person’s genre.  Very light enemies to lovers.

A Heart of Blood and Ashes is a fantasy romance by Milla Vane!  Essentially, the hero’s parents were killed by the heroine’s father and he’s out to kill her father and overtake his throne.  Luckily, she’s on board.  But he needs to marry her in order to accomplish his goals.  They do not trust each other whatsoever and torment one another a lot.  For context, within the first fifty pages she gives him a handjob while her hand is covered in her own brother’s blood (and yes, he did kill her brother).  It’s great.

The Worst Best Man is about a wedding planner who suddenly finds herself needing to work with her ex-fiance’s brother... who she holds responsible for her fiance leaving her at the altar.  Very fun and sexy contemporary.

The entire Four Horsemen series by Laura Thalassa.  In each book, the heroine falls in love with a literal embodiment of one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, who is here to bring the end of the world.  VERY heavy enemies to lovers.  Kinda dark at times?  Kinda fucked up at times?  I love it a lot?  It begins with Pestilence; War and Famine have already been released, but Death has not.

From Lukov with Love by Marina Zapata.  It’s a figure skating romance; a down on her luck skater pairs up with a male skater who is extremely successful, and who she’s known for years and hated.  Verrrrry slow burn, but fun.

Movies

The Proposal, of course, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.  You’ve probably seen this, but the setup is that she’s his evil boss, he’s her assistant, and she’s about to lose her visa so she bribes him into marrying her so that she can get citizenship.  But ruh-roh, they have to go to Alaska for his family reunion and he’s also got a great body and is like, an Alaskan Rockefeller?  

Obviously, Clueless which is enemies to lovers by way of former stepsiblings, and also by way of the only valid retelling of Emma.  Emma itself is not enemies to lovers, really, but Clueless amps that aspect up a bit.

If you want a super tragic version, warning lol--House of Flying Daggers.  It’s a wuxia movie, so melodramatic to the max.  She’s a blind daughter of the leader of a vigilante group, he’s a soldier who’s gone undercover to follow her to their stronghold.  Many reveals and one of my favorite dramatic love stories ensues.

Princess Diaries 2, duh.  Baby Chris Pine?  Anne Hathaway?  PLEASE BITCH.

365 DNI.  If you haven’t watched yet, watch it and thank me later.  The greatest cinematic contribution of the last decade.

Down with Love.  It’s a delightful take on like, 50s/60s sex comedies in which the heroine writes a book that convinces women to ignore love and men, which makes the hero look bad and makes it difficult for him to get laid.  So he sets out to basically.....  wear a different persona?  And seduce her?  It is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and I adore it.  Renee Zellweger and Ewan Macgregor have great chemistry in it too.

The Thomas Crown Affair, starring extremely hot Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo.  She’s an insurance investigator, he’s a billionaire who basically is suspected of stealing priceless works of art because he’s bored.  She investigates him and immediately begins fucking him.  Has a scene where she dances with him while wearing a completely transparent dress.  Then they fuck everywhere in his house.  I have never wanted to be between two people more.

The Painted Veil.  A socialite marries a dorky scientist for convenience, then cheats on him.  He finds out and basically forces her to go to China with him, where he is fighting the cholera epidemic, as an extremely long and petty murder suicide attempt.  But they get to know each other!  And the ice begins to melt!  Warning: tragic but lovely.

Casino Royale YES I SAID THAT.  The James Bond reboot movie that explains why he’s such a whore!!!  HE WAS BROKEN!!!  Basically James Bond is not like... a learned man... in this movie.  So he’s a cocky bastard and the Bond girl is impossibly sexy Eva Green as Vesper, who’s the “money man” on his mission.  They begin as bickering assholes and then fall in love.  But also!  Tragedy!

The animated Anastasia movie is one of the finest enemies to lovers movies of any time, I will defend this forever

We're going to abide by our son's wishes and it is to sue these people for all sorts of little stuff and he made he's made to buy things and advertise for them by buying them and he was made to purchase things he doesn't need and a little invention so taking opportunities for work I'm going to go around and sue for every little thing and we're going to sue for a ton of money for harassment and she says the reason is that the court treats it differently if you win and it'll pay and then if you are harassed and he's this in Massachusetts he thinks and it's a serious harassment and it'll pay they go to criminal Court and it's the same here and we're avoiding it and we shouldn't I want to sue for at least $100,000 on each account and we're suing for what they did to his family and also Ken's family it's going to be a huge lawsuit and we're good to see thousands of people separately and seeking a new class action against all sorts of people of hospitals he says for treating mental illness when he doesn't have it and that's a huge one I have to get approved

And yeah the barefoot bandit is not Justin but it revealed it to our friend here because he's a young guy and a barefoot been thieves are those who just run off and try and take stuff and for some reason it clicked with him was in the hospital the screwing around trying to take his stuff and they were and they sucked at it Ernie didn't even know it. There's a lot of stuff that they want to sue for but they want our friend here and others to get together cuz he's hospitals are such a pain in the ass nobody really works in them I mean we're going to get them fixed and he said you get a group together and he's requesting Marlboro hospital as to start and small and it's in the suburb is near where we had a stronghold we're not like real strong in Massachusetts and it's going to open her eyes to what's going on as we should be and we are going to sue them and we still have people there so they need help it's a good idea and he wants to get fellow patients and others even more luck in on this group action that's a great idea too this is a terrific idea the raceway and a lot of more locks do want to sign up and they're probably going to allow it depending on who some of them have bad records with us very bad some of them is not so bad BG is not so bad BJ is horrible you can stay home this other racers who would be allowed and we want to have them in the hospital group lawsuit in it's really our method is going to work this is great and he says this is awesome cuz I don't want to go to the freaking hospital for mental b******* so if they say he's not mentally ill and it might not be the exact slant but that's what they think they will try for social security and retroactively and our instinct is to get him some more money from it and garth would probably be on the wrong side of the fence he always is. So they had them in the hospital and say he's like us and his power and he's famous so you can't tell what they're up to she's wearing them gone because he thinks it's them going after his people that's what we found them doing so they're in the hospital bothering the s*** out of him and we said your bothering him and tell him what you're doing she was threatening him too also answer your f****** stupid and you're fired and said no we're not you are that's why we're doing it too they just said it out loud and I hear you tell me I'm going to kill your family he you start screaming this at me you here we're saying it says we're saying the same thing.. and I put my finger right on his nose I said this one and later that night instead I had his whole family and clan said disappearing and they're gone and their name in memory we're going to start seeing you again up there cuz these group suits is a great idea

We're going on to something new now this is awesome finally an idea that will work and have warlock on war so I can fight each other over the hospital loot and so forth it's a great idea. A lot of them have a grudge match against the hospitals too it took their stuff or won't let him have any. He wants us to sue UMass medical for his mom and other places they were just butcher and prolonging for the meat hook thing so I guess it's still the heel and they wouldn't let it heal after a while his mom caught on turned it off at night send it on a little in the morning and start healing the doctor was upset I started working on it and I found them doing it all the time and I got their motives of operandi and then start taking them down he got there and he started storming around and I found out that threatened him and he's telling people to f*** off out loud and they don't show up again he said the one person the other let me out of here or you're going down the hard way and the guy said you can't say that to me I said yes I can because that's going to happen to you he looks up Adam and says it's going to happen to you I said no you'll be first and thanks for not listening moron and goodbye friends around goes back to the room a few minutes later the guys called out and he's dead he was very surprised any question and he says I can't believe you're saying it and I can't believe it would happen and here just happening I feel bad about it but nobody's going to ever listen to him I said why he's gotten tons of people killed you idiots and he says this we don't really understand what you're saying so went right to his ear and said he's gotten tons of people killed because of people like you and on you something like that he said I think I heard you but I don't understand it.
