10 TO WATCH : MAYOR’S EDITION 81219
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 12 with Jacob Aere
Raiders, Allegiant agree on a naming rights deal for Las Vegas Stadium. The Raiders and Allegiant announced an agreement for the naming rights to Las Vegas Stadium, the future home of the Raiders and UNLV Football. Sources said that Allegiant is likely paying between $20-25 million in "cash and in-kind services a year to put its name on the building." This partnership with the Raiders presents a global branding opportunity for the Las Vegas-based airline company as Allegiant will have its name showcased on the 1.75 million-square-foot, state-of-the-art domed stadium that will also host many world-class major sports and entertainment events. Said Raiders President Marc Badain, “As the hometown airline, Allegiant is the perfect partner to showcase the incredible support we continue to receive from the Southern Nevada community.” Allegiant Stadium will also serve as the home for UNLV football in addition to serving as the site of the Las Vegas Bowl beginning in 2020, as well as the 2020 and 2021 Pac-12 football championship games.
American Airlines will pay $90 million over 10 years to sponsor a plaza at the Rams' and Chargers' new Inglewood stadium, becoming the "first official partner" for the facility. According to Bloomberg, American Airlines "agreed to sponsor the 2.5-acre space that serves as main entrance" to the Rams' and Chargers' new $5 billion Inglewood stadium, which "doesn't have a naming rights partner yet.” Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District Managing Director Jason Gannon said that talks on this deal "began more than a year ago.” The American Airlines Plaza will stand 10 stories high and has a "capacity of about 15,000." It will be "open to the public year-round, along with event days." As part of the deal, American Airlines also will become the "official airline of the Rams and Chargers, and have prominent branding during games.” American Airlines will pay $90 million over 10 years to sponsor the area. American Airlines has "been the Rams' carrier since the team returned" to Los Angeles in 2016. American Airlines currently has naming rights deals with the NBA Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.
Loudoun United christens new Segra Field home. D.C. United last Friday night opened the gates to a new venue for its second-division team in Leesburg, Virginia. USL club Loudoun United "announced a sellout crowd of 5,015" for its draw against the Charlotte Independence at Segra Field, according to the Washington Post. A week ago Saturday, however, the club welcomed numerous local dignitaries and representatives from D.C. United for an official ribbon cutting ceremony. Among the guest speakers at the event were Dave Johnson, longtime television voice of D.C. United, D.C. United CEO and managing general owner Jason Levien, Loudoun United Chief Operations Officer Adam Behnke, and Loudoun County Department of Economic Development Executive Director Buddy Rizer, along with almost every Loudoun County supervisor. Real estate firm JLL secured the deal to manage the venue, its fourth in the D.C. region. The stadium will be joined next year by a new training facility that will be shared by Loudoun United and D.C. United, with the $15 million development set to be completed next summer.
The Pro Bowl is returning to Orlando. The NFL announced that Orlando will host the 2020 Pro Bowl at Camping World Stadium on January 26, marking the "fourth consecutive year" the city has hosted the event. While Florida Citrus Sports and city officials "hoped to bring the game back, the NFL was rumored to be exploring hosting it in warm weather Super Bowl cities," according to the Orlando Sentinel. In 2020, it could have "moved to Miami ahead of the Super Bowl scheduled to be played at Hard Rock Stadium." Continuing the game in Orlando was also made possible by the $200 million-plus reconstruction to the former Citrus Bowl stadium that was completed in 2014. An additional $60 million upgrade is in the works that will include additional seats, ground-floor operations upgrades, and other improvements meant to attract more games and concerts. Major sporting events, from the Pro Bowl to WWE’s WrestleMania, have increased visitation in Central Florida, drawing thousands of fans and generating more than $100 million in economic impact.
A frequent topic of discussion among Tennis Canada execs has been how to find a way to increase the women’s purse at the Rogers Cup to "make it equal to the men’s." According to the Globe & Mail, men playing in the just-completed Rogers Cup, won by Rafael Nadal for the fifth time, competed for a purse of $5.7 million this year, compared with the women’s purse of $2.8 million. Tennis Canada – the event's owner and operator – “foots the bill" for both of the tournaments’ prizes. They are "separate events, mandated by the two different tours that each have their own sets of guidelines for determining prize money." The men's Rogers Cup has a "higher classification" on the ATP Tour than the women's event does on the WTA Tour. WTA CEO Steve Simon said, "We all recognize that the money has to come from some place, and they have a lot of responsibilities and we respect choices federations have to make." Building up the WTA Rogers Cup is a "top initiative" for Tennis Canada, as "increased revenue at the event leads directly to higher prize money."
The first ATP/WTA Citi Open under Mark Ein’s management broke the 51-year old tournament’s attendance record, as more than 78,000 fans watched the tennis action in DC. Ein took over management of the tournament from the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation in late 2018. The WTEF still owns the Citi Open and is its charitable beneficiary; a $50,000 check was presented to the WTEF from funds raised on the grounds during this year’s tournament. Citi Open ticket revenue was 20% higher than the previous record. Six of the tournament's nine main draw sessions sold out and merchandise sales were up 100% from 2018, according to the Washington Post. Fifteen-year old Coco Gauff lost early in the singles draw, but her run to the doubles title with 17-year old Caty McNally was a huge boost for the event, while the personality of men's singles winner Nick Kyrgios likely drew fans through the tournament’s final day. “We set lofty goals, and it exceeded even our wildest dreams,” Ein said in a statement.
Increased focus on media engagement and promotion within core markets sparks NASCAR turnaround. After several years of sharp ratings declines, NASCAR television viewership is on rise again. Nielsen reported that the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series averaged 4,076,000 viewers per race through the first half of this season, or about +2% year over year. JohnWallStreet visited Watkins Glen last week trying to find out what the drivers think the catalyst for the turnaround has been. The common theme among them was the belief that NASCAR president Steve Phelps’ increased focus on promoting the sport was driving it back in the right direction. While highly competitive racing has no doubt helped ratings, the consensus among NASCAR cognoscenti seems to be that the ratings increase is primarily the product of NASCAR's renewed focus on marketing. Like all businesses, everything starts at the top. NASCAR’s leadership – from Phelps on down – has once again gotten serious about promoting the sport.
As the Little League World Series gets underway, it’s unsettling to hear that the average child today spends less than three years playing a sport and quits by age 11, according to a new survey conducted by the Aspen Institute and Utah State University. On top of that, only 28% of kids aged 6 to 12 played team sports on a regular basis in 2018, down from 45% in 2008, per the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. According to the survey, three of the main reasons kids quit sports are a lack of fun, bad coaches, and financial pressure. The youth sports economy has always been big business, but as competitive travel teams have crept into increasingly younger age groups over the past decade, the industry has doubled in size to more than $15 billion. The result is a world of private coaching, interstate travel, and mega-complexes full of families willing — and able — to spend as much as $20,000 per year on youth sports. Meanwhile, low-income families are being priced out, resulting in their children losing not only an opportunity to excel at a sport but also the chance to exercise, make friends, and stay off the streets.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said soccer’s global governing body will exceed its promise to double the prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup to $60 million. In July, Infantino had confirmed that FIFA would increase the purse for the 2023 tournament, marking a second successive Women’s World Cup where the financial rewards have doubled, but with the size of the tournament going from 24 team to 32 the rewards would not have been as significant. “We have until 2023 to discuss about the prize money,” SportsPro quoted Infantino as saying. “I’m very confident, I’m sure we can go higher than doubling.” Despite Infantino’s commitment, FIFA has continued to face criticism for the disparity in pay between the women’s and men’s World Cups, with the latter’s prize money way ahead at $440 million for the 2022 competition in Qatar. Exactly by how much the prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup will surpass $60 million has not been reported. But with the success of France 2019 prompting FIFA to push through an expansion of the competition, Infantino has acknowledged this year’s tournament “really marked a before and an after for women’s football.”
Drew Brees partners with a youth soccer club. The Surf Soccer Club is one of the nation’s most storied youth soccer clubs and could soon become a destination for athletes in other sports. According to the Rancho Santa Fe Review, Surf Soccer Club announced a partnership with former San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees as he made an investment in Surf Cup Sports, the storied soccer club’s parent company. Although not currently offering football, Surf CEO Brian Enge said the possibility of branching out into other sports will be one of the critical issues facing the company’s board. Surf Sports is also considering expansion into lacrosse and beach volleyball. Surf Cup Sports has 16,000 athletes in the nation that play under the Surf brand and the club hosts four major national tournaments each year that bring in tens of thousands of athletes across the country. Surf is known for its philanthropy, funding over $8 million in charitable contributions over the years and Brees, a man who won Sportsman of the Year for his charitable efforts after Hurricane Katrina, will help to expand the brand and its philanthropic endeavors for youth in sports.

Keep an eye out for the next moves by these entrepreneurs and executives. A number of the biggest names in media left their jobs over the last year (or announced they will be leaving soon), including a handful of now-billionaires who have resources, ambition, and time on their hands to explore something new.
We are experimenting with new content forms at TechCrunch. This is a rough draft of something new —provide feedback directly to the author, Eric Peckham (@epeckham), our columnist focused on the intersection of media and technology.
Most notably, there are Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch (with rumored plans to launch a VC firm), Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine, VICE founder/CEO Shane Smith (who transitioned to a Chairman role), Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, and Oath’s CEO Tim Armstrong.
There’s also a long list of other names you may not recognize but should keep on your radar in the months ahead as they found new startups or take key leadership roles at top media/tech companies.
Today, Snap’s VP of Content Nick Bell announced he will be leaving the company by the end of the year. He oversaw all media partnerships and content operations for the Snapchat Discover section over the last 5 years. The 34-year old sold his first company, Teenfront.com, at age 16 and started multiple ventures afterward until joining global media conglomerate News Corp (where he became SVP of Digital Product). As a serial entrepreneur and one of the most sought-after experts in digital video, expect Bell’s next move to be noteworthy.
Nick Bell was one of the smartest, most in-tune people when it came to the future of content. His exit bodes poorly for Snapchat fixing Discover & winning at original content. Bet Instagram wouldn't mind having him run IGTV https://t.co/JBlAx6E7xr

Here are 12 other leaders at the intersection of media and technology who are currently available (publicly, at least) and plotting their next endeavor:
Joanna Coles, Photo by Amanda Voisard for The Washington Post via Getty Images.
Joanna Coles, former Chief Content Officer at Hearst Joanna Coles, who oversaw all editorial operations for the 300-title global publishing group Hearst since September 2016, announced with a fun video on August 6 that she would be stepping down. The former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire (as they shifted into a digital-first era) said she would announce her next adventure sometime this fall after taking a break. Coles has been a board member of Snap since 2015 and was appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
Rich Battista, former CEO of Time Inc Time Inc’s CEO left the helm of the publishing group upon its $2.8 billion acquisition by Meredith Corp in the spring. Battista held a range of major publishing, TV, and digital media roles before then, from leading Fox’s cable networks to running Mandalay Sports Media to turning around Gemstar-TV Guide and selling it for $2.3 billion. At various points in his career Battista has been a big company executive, an investor, and an entrepreneur.
Joel Stillerman, former Chief Content Officer at Hulu Stillerman was one of several executives who departed Hulu in May in a leadership reshuffle by the company’s new CEO. Stillerman was previously President of Original Programming and Development for AMC and SundanceTV. At a time when nearly every major TV company is vying to compete with Netflix through another streaming video platform (on their own or in partnership with others), there’s a lot of expertise to be had from the executive to oversaw all content for Netflix’s top competitor.
George Strompolos, Founder and former CEO of Fullscreen After AT&T acquired The Chernin Group’s remaining stake in Otter Media (Fullscreen’s parent company) in September, Fullscreen’s George Strompolos stepped down as CEO of the multi-channel network he founded in 2011. According to his LinkedIn profile, LA-based Strompolos in advising and investing in startups for the time being.
Erik Huggers, former CEO of VEVO Huggers stepped down from VEVO in April after 3 years. He was previously an SVP at Verizon and President of Intel Media (which Verizon acquired). As a supervisory board member of Germany’s largest broadcasting group, ProSiebenSat.1, Huggers has also recently joined the board of ProSiebenSat.1’s streaming TV service 7TV, which is a joint venture with Discovery Inc.

Sophie Watts, former President of STX Entertainment Sophie Watts joined investor Robert Simonds in 2011 to develop a new film/TV studio with backing from TPG Growth. According to the WSJ, STX Entertainment has been planning a $500 million IPO in Hong Kong. As president, she primarily oversaw unscripted TV, digital, and VR operations. She left in January to explore new opportunities. Watts—who started her career in London producing videos for Beyoncé, Elton John, Madonna, Mariah Carey, and others—was named to Fortune’s 40 Under 40 in 2016 and is still just 32.
Jonathan Carson, former President of Mic Carson founded 3 startups (music social network Outer Sound, interactive media consultancy Intercities, and social media intelligence company BuzzMetrics) before becoming the “CEO of Digital” at Nielsen and then the Chief Revenue Officer at VEVO. In July, he stepped down from VC-backed news startup Mic after one year as President. Expect his next move to be within the same realm of video, social, mobile, and data that he’s worked in thus far.
Colin Carrier, former Chief Strategy Officer at Twitch Carrier joined Twitch in 2013, leaving the Eversport Media startup he co-founded to become General Manager of Justin.TV which operated independently from the rest of Twitch. He transitioned to become Twitch’s Chief Strategy Officer in 2014 upon Amazon’s $1 billion acquisition of the live-streaming platform. While CSO, he oversaw the acquisition of CurseMedia and ClipMine and developed a personal angel investment portfolio of over 30 startups (including Cruise, which GM acquired for over $1B). He departed Twitch over the summer.

Troy Carter, former Global Head of Creator Services at Spotify A career talent manager in the music industry who worked with artists like Lady Gaga, John Legend, and Meghan Trainor, Carter joined Spotify in June 2016 as the face of the streaming service within the music industry. Having stepped down in September, he is among several top executives who have left Spotify in 2018 before and after it listed on the NYSE. Carter—who also built an angel investing portfolio of over 40 startups—hasn’t announced his next endeavor but appears to still be making investments through the VC fund he co-founded, Cross Culture Ventures.
Stefan Blom, former Chief Content Officer of Spotify Blom left Spotify early this year just before the music streaming service went public with a $29 billion market cap. He had been Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Content Officer over the prior 4 years, working in part on Spotify’s early steps into original video (which it retreated from). Before Spotify, he was CEO of the Nordic division at EMI (a notable record label group).
Matthew Ball, former Head of Strategy at Amazon Studios Ball joined Amazon Studios as Head of Strategy in 2016 after working within The Chernin Group as Director of Strategy & Business Development for Otter Media (which is now fully owned by AT&T). Since leaving Amazon earlier this year, he has continued to publish widely-read blog posts about the future of media for MediaREDEF—which he has been doing since 2014—and, according to his Twitter bio, is currently “tinkering away on a small idea that could be more”.
Matt Pincus, Founder and former CEO of SONGS Music Publishing Last December, Pincus sold his innovative music publishing firm SONGS Music Publishing, which had become the largest independent publishing of contemporary music in the US, to Kobalt for a rumored $150 million. He departed in March and has since become a Special Advisor to Snap Inc and taken an Entrepreneur-in-Residence title at leading digital media merchant bank LionTree.

Following a review of FIA’s internal procedures initiated by its President Mohammed Ben Sulayem at the start of the year, the Paris-based governing body has confirmed that it has made significant tweaks to its structure. Nikolas Tombazis, who has led the FIA’s Formula 1 technical team since 2018 and overseen the development and implementation of the successful 2022 regulations overhaul, will take on a more transversal role as Single Seater Director. Four new roles have been established with the Sporting, Technical, Financial and Strategy & Operations Directors with all of them set to report to the Single Seater Director. F1 Sporting Director Steve Nielsen is leaving FOM to take up a similar position with the sport’s governing body, the FIA. Tim Goss will take on the role of Technical Director previously held by Tombazis, having worked as Deputy since the start of the 2021 season. Federico Lodi has led the FIA’s Financial Regulations team since its inception, and now becomes the Formula 1 Financial Director. Former Sporting Director François Sicard will take on a newly-created position within the FIA as Formula 1 Strategy & Operations Director, responsible for long-term strategic planning, and also for key trackside activities and logistics. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commented: “We have dedicated a lot of time and effort to making significant, informed changes to our Formula 1 team to create the right structure with the right people to oversee the future regulation of the sport. By developing and empowering people within our organisation, as well as bringing in expertise and experience from the outside, I am confident that we are in the best position possible to move forward together with our partners at FOM and the Formula 1 teams.” Tombazis added: “I am excited and honoured to be taking on this new position within the FIA, and very grateful to the President for the trust he is demonstrating towards me. We have a group of extremely talented and dedicated people who work flat out to deliver the level of regulation that Formula 1 demands and deserves, and I fully believe this new structure will take our resources to the next level and allow us to make continual improvements.” Commenting on the announcement, Nielsen said: “I have spent my professional life working for many teams and organisations in Formula 1, and cannot wait to engage with another new chapter with the FIA. I’d like to thank both the President and Stefano Domenicali for their trust in me, and I understand and appreciate the unique challenges that come with being the regulator. "Having worked closely with a number of people in the Federation over the years, I’m looking forward to tackling those challenges that lie ahead with them - Formula 1 is in a great place at the moment, and it’s our responsibility to ensure the future health of the sport that is at the heart of everything we do.” via F1Technical.net . Ben Sulayem hands day-to-day running of F1 over to Tombazis | 2023 F1 season
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has handed the day-to-day running of Formula 1 over to Nikolas Tombazis, who was appointed as single-seater director last month. The move follows recent criticism of Ben Sulayem’s management of the governing body’s most successful series. F1 wrote to Ben Sulayem last month to strongly object to comments he made on social media regarding F1’s financial value. Soon afterwards the FIA was forced to respond to sexist comments Ben Sulayem had made 20 years before he became president, after they resurfaced in a newspaper report. An FIA spokesperson told RaceFans the transfer of operational responsibilities from Ben Sulayem to Tombazis was a planned development following its announcement last month that it had completed the introduction of its new management structure for F1. Ben Sulayem, who was elected president of the FIA in December 2021, will continue to give input into top-level decision-making and strategy. The day-to-day operation of F1 will be handled by Tombazis and his team. Tombazis joined the FIA in 2018 as its head of single-seater technical matters. Prior to that he was Ferrari’s chief designer. His team in charge of F1 include Steve Nielsen, who joined the FIA as sporting director last month, as well as directors responsible for technical, financial, strategic and operational matters. “The president’s manifesto clearly set out this plan before he was elected,” said an FIA spokesperson. “It pledged ‘the appointment of an FIA CEO to provide an integrated and aligned operation,’ as well as to ‘introduce a revised governance framework’ under ‘a leadership team focused on transparency, democracy, and growth’.” Ben Sulayem appointed Natalie Robyn as the FIA’s CEO last September. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free Nielsen and Tombazis head up the FIA’s F1 team “These goals, as well as the announcement of the new structure of the Single-Seater Department, have been planned since the beginning of this presidency,” the spokesperson continued. “The FIA president has a wide remit that covers the breadth of global motor sport and mobility, and now that the structural reorganisation in F1 is complete this is a natural next step.” Last month Ben Sulayem indicated he intended to spend less time on F1 matters during his second year in charge of the FIA. “I should give more time to rallying,” said the former rally driver. “I have been dragged – and I’m being very straight and honest – I’ve been sucked into F1.” Ben Sulayem’s election as president came as F1 was engulfed in controversy over the conclusion to the 2021 world championship in Abu Dhabi. Its investigation into the handling of the race and the consequences arising from it lasted well into 2022. Other controversies which arose during 2022 included a long-running dispute over the wearing of jewellery by drivers, which brought Ben Sulayem into conflict with Lewis Hamilton and was regarded by some as being targeted against the seven-times world champion. Ben Sulayem was also involved in long-running negotiations over F1’s new engine rules for 2026 and Red Bull’s punishment for breaching the budget cap during the previous season.
