Mirai, Riko and Hanami raced towards the Magic School. The clock ticked closer and closer to the time class started. The magical duo panted as they ran, terrified of being late yet again. Though, Hanami seemed to be having fun; thinking of the situation as some sort of game.
âWeâre almost there!â Riko exclaimed in relief as they made it inside, now running through the halls.
âYes! Câmon guys, we can make it!â Mirai sped to the front, having a sudden burst of energy. She turned her head, looking behind her to talk to the others. âWe just have to get in the classroom before the teacher does!â
âHey, no running in the halls!â A voice scolded.
Riko gasped. âMirai, look out!â
She turned her head back to look in front of her, but it was too late. She crashed hard into whoever was there. Papers flew everywhere, and both people fell to the ground with a loud thud.
âOw! Watch where youâre going!â The voice said, clearly very annoyed.
âIâm so sorry!â Mirai quickly apologized. She finally got a look of who she crashed into. It was you. Not wasting a second, she stood up, offering her hand to help you.
Riko stuttered nervously. âM-mx. (name)!â
âOh, you know them?â Hanami asked innocently.
âWhat? You donât?â Riko raised her voice in shock.
You scoffed, rejecting Miraiâs hand, and standing on your own. âGreat. Look at what youâve done.â You said, dusting yourself off. You bent down, and began to pick up the fallen papers.
âOh, here! Lemme help! Cure Up Ra Pa Pa!â Hanami whipped her wand out, saying the magic words. Immediately, the papers levitated, flying around you in a pretty pattern before stacking into your arms neatly.
You hummed, skeptical. How could a newbie perform that spell?
âOh, your hat!â Mirai said, noticing that it had also fallen. She picked it up, and placed it onto your head, rather crookedly.
You eyed them harshly for a few moments. Mirai and Hanami just stood in silence, kind smiles on their faces. Meanwhile, Riko looked absolutely mortified.
âYouâd better hurry. Class starts inâŠâ You paused to look at a nearby clock. ââŠ43 seconds.â And with that, you walked away.
âWow. They didnât even thank us.â Mirai pointed out.
âYeah. We were just trying to be niceâŠâ Hanami said sadly.
âGuys! Do you even know who that was?â Riko finally spoke.
âUmmmâŠâ The other two girls thought hard for a moment. But they couldnât seem to remember seeing or hearing of you before.
âThat was (name)! Theyâre like this schoolâs superstar! Theyâre perfect at everything! They see anyone beneath them as unworthy of their attention, so they always ignore everyone!â Riko explained, in disbelief that they didnât know who you were.
âWoah! So weâre pretty lucky, huh?â Hanami asked happily.
âNo! You guys got in their way! So now weâre even lower than them!â Riko said, clearly devastated. She gripped the brim of her hat tightly, tugging it down.
Mirai and Hanami looked at each other, before each taking one of her hands. âItâs okay, Riko! Who cares what they think? Theyâre not actually that important. Itâs just a dumb popularity thing!â Mirai assured her.
âYeah! Just because theyâre smarter, doesnât mean you arenât cool too!â Hanami added.
All three girls smiled. But it didnât last long, as the bell went off, declaring that they were late.
âOh no!â They all shouted, and began running to their classroom once again.

(After School)
The trio had finally finished class for the day. Luckily, they were able to talk their way out of a punishment, but their nerves were still calming down. At that moment, the only thing on their minds was relaxing, and praying that they didnât need to deal with any Pretty Cure related things that day.
As they walked through the halls, the chatter suddenly changed moods. Looking behind them to see what the fuss was about, they saw you yet again. Everyone was admiring you, like you were the best thing since frozen mandarins. But at the same time, they kept a clear distance from you.
â(name)! Hi!â Hanami greeted happily, waving enthusiastically.
The entire hallway went silent. No one talked to you, ever. It looked like she had insulted your whole bloodline based on everyoneâs faces.
You stopped walking. âOh, itâs you. The ones who were quite literally running late.â You said, not even turning to look at them.
The other students began murmuring. They simply couldnât believe you were even talking to them at all.
âHey, you were running late too!â Mirai pointed out, upset to be called out as if they were the only guilty ones.
The students gasped. They couldnât believe what they just heard! The star student running late? No way!
Your head snapped in their direction. Your eyes stared cold, sharp daggers. It sent a chill down all of the girlsâ spines. âI was not running late. I had arrived to class earlier than everyone else. I was simply retrieving some papers for the teacher. And even so, I got back before the bell rang, even after your little mishap.â
All three of them gulped nervously. They werenât sure if you were going to do something to them or not. But when you turned your head back in front of you, they felt their prayers had been answered.
âItâs a shame that such⊠interesting students are so irresponsible.â And with that, you walked away from them yet again.
âHey, wait!â Riko called out. But you simply ignored her; done with the conversation.
Suddenly, all three girls were surrounded by students. They braced themselves for being yelled at for talking like that to you. But instead, they received words of admiration.
âDid you hear that? (name) called you guys âinterestingâ! Thatâs awesome! Theyâve never said anything like that to someone else before!â A boy said.
âThatâs right! They must be impressed by you or something!â A girl suggested.
âThe schoolâs odd balls and the star student? Is this a rivalry or something?â Someone asked.
Everyone started murmuring in both excitement and nervousness at that question. They knew that it was very possible. You only ever talk to those you deem worthy of your attention. And you gave them more than youâve given anyone in the history of your student life. So it could very well be the beginning of a rivalry.
âOh no⊠whatâve we done?â Mirai mumbled full of guilt.
âWhat are you talking about?â Riko grabbed her hand, looking her in the eyes. Her own were filled with pure excitement and determination. âThis is amazing! We have a rival! That means we have to up our game if we wanna surpass them! Imagine their face when we do!â She began rambling.
Mirai had fully expected Riko to be upset at her for starting all this. But it seemed that she had unintentionally begun something new entirely. âOkay!â She puffed air out of her nose. âSounds like we gotta study even harder now!â She grabbed Hanamiâs hand with her free one, and thrusted both hands into the air as a sort of group cheer.
âYeah!â They all shouted in unison, as if casting a special spell to do better.
They all knew that in order to be worthy rivals, they had to do more than their best. But for the sake of fun and validation, they were more than okay with that. So after that day, they vowed to follow that goal. Both them and the entire school couldnât wait to see what happens.

Top New Science Fiction Books in April 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Science fiction has the power to take us awayâto escape, to make us reflect back on our own world in challenging ways, to fill us with awe and wonder about the beauties of the universe. There are so many science fiction books out there worth your time, but we only have room to recommend a few. Here are some of the science fiction books weâre most looking forward to in April 2021âŠ
Top New Science Fiction Books in April 2021
The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers
Type: Novel Publisher: Harper Voyager Release date: April 20 Den of Geek says: Ever since her groundbreaking A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, Chambers has been a powerful voice in science fiction. Colorful, creative aliens inhabit a galaxy sparkling with healing and love, âsoftâ science fiction in the online sense that is also bursting with ideas and thoughtful characterization.
Publisherâs summary: Return to the sprawling, Hugo Award-winning universe of the Galactic Commons to explore another corner of the cosmosâone often mentioned, but not yet exploredâin this absorbing entry in the Wayfarers series, which blends heart-warming characters and imaginative adventure. With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop.
At the Five-Hop One-Stop, long-haul spacers can stretch their legs (if they have legs, that is), and get fuel, transit permits, and assorted supplies. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through.
When a freak technological failure halts all traffic to and from Gora, three strangersâall different species with different aimsâare thrown together at the Five-Hop. Grounded, with nothing to do but wait, the trioâan exiled artist with an appointment to keep, a cargo runner at a personal crossroads, and a mysterious individual doing her best to help those on the fringesâare compelled to confront where theyâve been, where they might go, and what they are, or could be, to each other.
Buy The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers.
Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells
Type: Novella Publisher: Tordotcom Release date: April 27
Den of Geek says: Wellsâ beloved Murderbot has become one of the most entertaining and must-see characters of todayâs science fiction. The android with a reluctant heart is not to be missed. Wells rarely fails to be entertaining.
Publisherâs summary: Having captured the hearts of readers across the globe (Annalee Newitz says itâs âone of the most humane portraits of a nonhuman Iâve ever readâ) Murderbot has also established Martha Wells as one of the great SF writers of today.
No, I didnât kill the dead human. If I had, I wouldnât dump the body in the station mall.
When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of peopleâwho knew?)Â
Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans!
Again!
Buy Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells.
Hummingbird Salamander by Jeff Vandermeer
Type: Novel Publisher: MCD Release date: April 6
Den of Geek says: This eco-thriller from the author of Annihilation trades the weird setting for a more prosaic but just as mysterious chase.
Publisherâs summary: Security consultant âJane Smithâ receives an envelope with a key to a storage unit that holds a taxidermied hummingbird and clues leading her to a taxidermied salamander. Silvina, the dead woman who left the note, is a reputed ecoterrorist and the daughter of an Argentine industrialist. By taking the hummingbird from the storage unit, Jane sets in motion a series of events that quickly spin beyond her control. Soon, Jane and her family are in danger, with few allies to help her make sense of the true scope of the peril. Is the only way to safety to follow in Silvinaâs footsteps? Is it too late to stop? As she desperately seeks answers about why Silvina contacted her, time is running outâfor her and possibly for the world. Hummingbird Salamander is Jeff VanderMeer at his brilliant, cinematic best, wrapping profound questions about climate change, identity, and the world we live in into a tightly plotted thriller full of unexpected twists and elaborate conspiracy.Â

We Shall Sing a Song Into the Deep by Andrew Kelly Stewart

Publisherâs summary: Rose Allington is a bodyguard for celebrities, and she suffers from a rare disease. Her moults come quickly, changing everything about her life, who she is, who she loves, who she trusts.
In a world where people shed their skin, itâs a fact of life that we move on and cast off the attachments of our old life. But those memories of love can be touched â and bought â if you know the right people.

long dumb and kind of embarrassing/revealing post about my history of my religious upbringing/evolution/beliefs/whatever
my upbringing was vaguely new-agey, dad for example was a buddhist of the white hippie variety, and while he didnât raise me specifically buddhist per se, the new-agey milieu was still a major influence. he was also into tarot and âancient aliensâ type stuff, which of course influenced my exploration of UFO stuff and wicca and other types of witchcraft in middle school and into high school. believed very strongly that i had psychic powers and all that shit.
on the more sinister end, i was given exclusively homeopathic medicine when i was very young. other phony (and potentially harmful) new-age cures like ear candles were also part of my life.Â
around later high school i started getting into atheism through youtube stuff- thunderf00t back when he was dunking on creationists, and nonstampcollector, people like that. initially i was watching more because of a shared dislike of creationism, but the arguments in favor of a non-supernatural universe eventually won me over.
and like, for all the many flaws of nu-atheism i am kinda grateful that it convinced me i didnât have psychic powers.
later i ended up being a mod on a midlingly popular blog posting cringe religious artwork. the one that popularized christian sonic, as a concept. this was YEARS before my main blog gained any kind of following.
this was sorta the road to me becoming more disenchanted with nu-atheism as it put me in direct contact with the more ugly part of it. not to mention thnderf00t was getting really into anti-feminism and islamophobia, which i was disgusted by.
also in general i regret pretty much every moment i spent as a mod on that blog. the whole project was really ugly and mean-spirited.
so this led me to take less of a negative view toward religion and to start to see how even if it wasnât literally true it can still hold personal, emotional value. but then, why not re-explore the occult that had fascinated me in my youth? if itâs okay for other people to explore spiritualism, why shouldnât i?
which led me to explore godbuilding, spiritual alchemy, stuff like that- trying to keep myself on the side of viewing everything through the lens of itâs psychological effect, rather than any kind of literal supernatural phenomenon.
but even these non-supernatural frameworks for understanding the occult, and the theories i built up around them, became increasingly untenable, and i became increasingly unable to defend my promotion of them.
and of course, this was right around when i found out about stuff like the horoscope housing discrimination incident. so you know. that kinda made me want to distance myself from the whole witchy/occult thing.
so that brings us to today.
most charitably, my shifts in my beliefs and the groups i affiliate with are reasonable decisions based off of the evidence i see around me- least charitably, iâm a mindless trend-following drone. readers are free to make their own evaluation, and be sure to make it entirely on the basis of how much you like me as a person.
at any rate, i have kind mixed feelings about new agey stuff. it was bad that i was given fake homeopathic medicine. a certain level of skepticism is necessary to prevent that kind of stuff. but also, i do feel a certain fondness for certain elements of it- and i donât feel positively about having been mocked by other kids for my spiritual beliefs when i was in middle school. and, conversely, i deeply regret the time i spent on the other side of that, when i mocked people for their spiritual beliefs as a mod on fucknoreligiousfanart.
i guess the closest i can come to an answer there is that there are times when mockery as a tool to dis-incentivize negative social phenomenon is necessary- like, say, if someoneâs giving their children homeopathic medicine, instead of like, actual medicine- but it shouldnât be taken lightly.
also insert pretentious overlong paragraph describing my flip-flopping as a âdialecticâ and throwing around marxist terms arbitrarily to try to make it seem less inane here.

Hunters and Happily Ever Afters
Pairing: Dean x Reader
Trigger Warnings: SPN canon violence, self-doubt, kissing, SLIGHT smut, implied smut, swearing
Word Count: 2435
A/N: This was written for Jenâs Disney Challenge AKA @deanjensengirlmaggie. The movie I chose was Sleeping Beauty. This didnât really turn out how I originally planned but I think it turned out OK, not great but fine I guess. As always feedback is welcomed and if you want to be added to my tag list let me know. BTW Happy Birthday Jen. Oh, and just ignore the crappy little intro to smut at the end. Itâs awful I know. That was my first attempt at something sexual so please be gentle. Enjoy! Also please ignore any mistakes I did my own editing and did a crappy job as im tired as hell
Summary: When you and the guys go after a witch in Anaheim with a Disney fetish you get caught in the crossfire. With you under a sleeping curse and the guys having only 72 hours to track down and kill the witch for the cure to work, will they be able to make it in time to save you? More importantly, will Deanâs true loveâs kiss work to wake you up?Â
âGuys we totally need to hit the beach after this hunt,â you said.
âUH Y/N how about no,â Dean said.
âCome on weâre in Cali and its fucking summer and fucking beautiful. Prime beach weather.â
âWe are not really beach people Y/N. Anyways letâs focus on the case. We are still an hour out from Anaheim.â
âFine. Three women all about Y/H, long Y/H/C, and Y/E/C. All dead in mysterious circumstances that no one can explain.â
âFirst vic ate a poison apple. Second vic had her vocal cords ripped out. Third vic had all her toes cut off,â Sam said.
âWoah. Back up. Did you say toes?â Dean said.
âYeah. All ten cut cleanly off,â Sam said.
âAny who, all deaths happened while each victim was alone, so no one has a single clue what the hell is going on here,â you said.
âSo, we thinking witch here. Because this seems witchy to me,â Dean said.
âYeah,â you and Sam said in unison.
Something about this case seemed familiar. The way these women were killed you couldnât help but think you had seen or heard it somewhere before. All you knew was this witch seemed to be killing women every other day and needed to be stopped. But at least you had one thing down for sure. You knew the type of women she went after. Women like you.
Once yâall reached Anaheim, it finally hit you why these deaths sounded so familiar. All the Disney signs and little kids wearing Disney t-shirts, these deaths were happening just miles from Disneyland. These deaths were fairytale related. Well, not the nice happy ending ones that everyone knows and loves but more closely relates to the Brothersâ Grimm versions of each stories.
âFAIRYTALES!!!!â you shouted causing both men to jump in their seats.
âWhat? What about fairytales Y/N?â Dean said.
âThe deaths. I knew they looked familiar, but I couldnât quite put my finger on why that is until now. All these deaths are somehow related to fairytales,â you said.
âI donât remember anyone dying in fairytales. Not like this anyway,â Sam said as he leaned forward. Dean threw him a look and yâall just shook your head and ignored him.
âWell, these are more related to the Brothersâ Grimm versions of the stories. The originals before Disney got ahold of them. The poison apple is Snow White, the taking of the vocal cords is Ariel, and the cutting off of the toes is Cinderella well more like her step sisters but her story none the less,â you said.
âSo, youâre telling me this witch has a Disney killing fetish?â Dean said.
âYeah pretty much,â you said.
âThatâs just fucked up,â Dean said and you and Sammy just nodded your heads in agreement.
âThis next part, however, Dean, you are not gonna like. This witch needs to be drawn out and the only way to do that is to use me as bait,â you said.
âHell no. Ainât happening. Not on my watch,â Dean protested.
âItâs the only way Dean. Plus, I fit her type pretty much to a T,â you said.
âI hate to admit it, but Dean, sheâs right. I hate using people as bait but she is perfect and this may be the only way to draw the witch out,â Sam said.
After a little more back and forth between the three of you and Dean protesting, he finally gave in. It was a reluctant giving in, but one none the less. However, he didnât hesitate to sit there and pout like a four year after losing at which you had to smile at. You werenât sure why Dean put up such a fight. He had to know this was the only way. Heâs gone down this road before and didnât put up such a big fit. What made you so special?
You guys split up different local areas that the witch might be hiding out. After sifting through so many pages of different buildings you decided to take a quick break and surf the web. Thatâs when you came across a place that would be a perfect hideout for the witch.
âGuys, I think I found something. Thereâs this attraction at the actual park thatâs under construction which means its empty. That would be the perfect hideout for her considering her fetish and all,â you said.
Both guys agreed and all three of you hit the road. You wanted to ask Dean why he put up such a fight about you being bait but realized it may not be the best time.
You had started developing feelings for the older Winchester about a few months back after he saved you from a werewolf. The way he patched you up and took care of you with such gentleness, completely opposite of the way he usually was, took you by surprise and stole your heart. Ever since then you had gotten a little flirty with him and he would reciprocate but that was it never anything more. He left you confused on where he stood. So maybe him fighting for you like this was a sign that he felt the same way. You would have to discuss that after this meeting, now wasnât really the appropriate time.
Once you arrived at the park it was after dark and everything was closed so yâall snuck in. You told the guys to hang back and went towards the attraction and the witch came out.
âCan I help you?â she said.
âUh I was told you could help me with a spell to get my boyfriend to tell me truth,â you said.
âYes, I can hold on a moment.â
When she turned around you grabbed your gun from your waistband and aimed at her, but before you could shoot she flew it out of your hands. You went running for it went she flung you in the opposite direction. At this point the guys had noticed the fight and had started running their way towards you.
âYou hunters are all the same,â the witch said with a sickening grin forming on her lips.
Before you could get a word out or move an inch she hit you with some sort of magic that knocked you out cold. When the guys saw this, they busted through the gates and went charging towards the witch. They drew their guns only to have them flung to the same place yours was.
Dean went running towards you and tried to shake you awake but you wouldnât wake up.
âNow, now boys, sheâs under a sleeping curse. And this Sleeping Beauty only has 72 hours before she never wakes up again. However, this fairytale has a twist that youâll need to figure out,â the witch said and then vanished.
Dean grabbed you from the ground and held you tight whilst he and Sam ran back to the Impala. He gently laid you down in the backseat and placed a kiss to your forehead whispering that they were going to figure this out.
While back at the hotel Sam looked up the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty and noticed the cure was true loves kiss. But since the witch said there was a twist he knew there was something more. Since she sounded so confident that she would win and using the knowledge he already knew about witches Sam guessed the twist was they had to kill the witch before true loves kiss would work.
âDean I think I figured it out,â Sam said.
âOk, hit me with it,â Dean said.
âWell the fairytale of Sleepy Beauty state that the only thing that can wake her up is true loves kiss,â Sam said. At this Dean gulped. He has loved you since he laid eyes on you and when you were attacked by that werewolf it only reinforced the matter, but he didnât think you felt the same way.
âHowever,â Sam continued. âThe witch said there was a catch to this so taking what we already know about witches, how their spells usually die with them, I figure we now have a little over 70 and a half hours to track and kill the witch and get you back here to kiss Y/N.â
âWhat me? No Sammy. Iâm not her true love. I mean we flirt sometimes but thatâs it.â
âWhatever Dean we really donât have the time to argue about this now. So, letâs get this witch and regardless of what you think you will kiss Y/N to bring her back.â
Dean shut up and sat down in front of his computer. He started doing research on this witch to track where she might be, but every so often would steal a glance at you to make sure your chest was still moving up and down. Honestly, Dean had no idea what heâd do if he lost you and he didnât want to find out.
Tracking this witch proved harder than originally thought. The guys left your side and searched the rest of the amusement park and had no luck. That took a big chunk of time out of what they had left. But Sam realized that Disney had a lot of resorts that people could stay at and that the witch could be staying at one of the more Disney-esque ones.
Lucky for them the second resort they landed on happened to be the right one. They asked the clerk if he had seen a woman matching the description of the witch and he said yes and that she was a strange one. He said that he usually couldnât give out room information but since he had a bad feeling about this chick he gave it to them.
They reached room 209 with their guns drawn and kicked down the door. The second they entered the witch threw both of their guns across the room and Sam into the book case and Dean into the glass coffee table. Sam was able to break free from the hold and charged towards the witch again only to be flung through the bathroom door hitting his head on the toilet effectively knocking him out.
With the witches focus elsewhere Dean was able to get to his feet and go for his gun. The witch noticed and was able to stop him but with the fight he was putting up when she tried to fling him across the room again she through him towards his gun instead of away from. Dean smiled picked up his ivory gripped pistol and filled the witch with witch killing bullets killing her for good.
He stood up and raced towards Sam and shook him awake. They both looked down at their watches and noticed the time. âOh shit,â they both said as they realized they only had an hour and a half to get back to you and wake you up. That is even if Deanâs kiss would work. He still wasnât so sure.
They jumped into the Impala and skidded out of the parking lot faster than a bank robber leaving the scene of the crime. Dean knew they were at least 45 minutes out without traffic so head had to step on it.
They finally made it back to the motel and raced to your room seeing you still laying there peacefully in bed not looking like you were going to die soon. They checked the time and saw they only had 30 minutes left and Dean started to panic. He rushed to your side and grazed his fingers down your face, moving some hair out of your eyes. Just sleeping you looked so beautiful and so peaceful. On the brink of death your beauty still shined through. As he went to kiss you he stopped midway and pulled back.
âWhat are you doing man? Kiss her. Wake her up before we lose her forever,â Sam practically yelled.
âI canât. She doesnât love me Sammy. Iâm not her true love. I canât be. I canât be anyoneâs true love, Iâm too broken. Too damaged. All I do is hurt the people I love,â Dean said as he started to break down.
âDean stop. Ok just stop. You do deserve love. You have it right here. You want to talk about hurting people? You will be hurting her if you donât kiss her. She will be dead. You love her and you know and she loves you. Come on, Iâve noticed the glances you guys share itâs kind of gross, but the good lovey dovey gross. So be a man and fucking kiss her before I kick your ass for letting her die because you were a coward,â Sam said literally anything he could think of that would light a fire under Deans ass to get him to do what he needed. And it worked.
Dean leaned downed and kissed you soft, plump, pink lips for a second and then let go. After another second your eyes fluttered opened and you awoke. Sam sighed, but Dean had a different reaction. He grabbed your face and smashed his lips on yours, much to your surprise, but you didnât fight it. His kiss was hard, desperate, needy, but so full of passion. He bit your bottom lip asking for entrance and you laced your arms around his neck and gladly let him in.
Sam huffed and left the room deciding to sleep in the Impala for the night because he knew exactly where that was headed and didnât need to see that.
When you and Dean part for air, he leans his forehead against yours and whispers in your ear, âNever scare me like that again. I love you and I canât lose you.â
His words surprised you so you leaned in and said, âI love you too.â
Dean smashed his lips into yours again, but this time he laid you back in bed and let his hands roam your body. âLet me show you how much I love you,â he said. He pulled your shirt off and began kissing down your jaw and your neck down to your chest. He had one hand on your breast massaging it while his other hand continued to roam. Unconsciously you moaned and started to grind your hips into him generating a growl to emit from his lips.
You looked into his eyes and saw his pupils were blown with lust and you leaned in to kiss him again while you let your hands roam. You got to his waist and felt his hardening member causing you to groan again. This was going to be a long night, but a very enjoyable night.

Nature of poetry explained in discworld terms!! GO
Iâm so glad you asked!!
Iâm pretty sure Iâve actually said part of this before, but now I have an excuse to expand and detail!
A very long time ago, when I was a wee babe of a poet who didnât know much of anything actual about poetry as a craft or a discipline, I had an insight, a flash of understanding. It stayed with me and has been confirmed by my later education and practium. Simply put, itâs like this: poems are shambles. And by extension, poetry is like witchcraft.
In Discworld, witchcraft is both sublimely mysterious and knuckle-cracking practical. Half or more of it is plain old hard work; elbow grease. You get out into the muck where everyday life happens and you do what you can do to help people, in accord with your talents (and often not in accord with - itâs like being a policeman; you wear the hat, you do the job, whether or not you âonly do x, not y!â). The other half or more of it is flair; itâs not just what you do, but how you do it, that matters. And it does matter - to you, to the people you serve, and to the job being done, whether thatâs curing sick pigs or midwifery or tending the dying and dead or educating or whatever. And then thereâs a thin edge of the mysterious stuff - the deep witchcraft, the Granny Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching stuff. A little goes a long way. In poetry, the writer divorced from real life doesnât make a great poet. (I canât help but think of Annagramma and Mrs. Earwig.) Poetry is ultimately about compassion and relationships: expanding the self through interaction with the outside world/other people. Sometimes itâs the poet or the speaker who does the expanding, and sometimes itâs the reader; sometimes both. Compassion literally means âto suffer withâ - and poetry of every stripe and kind, good bad or ugly, successful or not - has its roots in that soil. (There are some interesting notes about empathy in the famous beginning poetâs guide/prompt book, The Poetâs Companion.)Â
A shamble is the witchy equivalent of a cross between a barometer and a swiss army knife. There are two kinds: the ones that work, and the âdeadâ ones just for show. A shamble looks something like an eccentric wind chime in construction and, if itâs to work, must be made: by the witch using it; in the moment; half-unconsciously; with whatever tools and materials just happen to be on hand. Itâs a tool that allows the skilled witch to skim the waters of the unconscious and read invisible signs in the magical field, in Whatâs Going Down Right Now. A skilled witch learns how to âjust happenâ to carry about her person the especially useful tidbits that make her personal shambles the most effective they can be.
I love shambles as a metaphor for poems because they physically represent the conscious and unconscious aspects of writing, how they relate, and how they poet uses them and moves back and forth between them. Sometimes writing poems is like waterskiing; youâve got one foot on Inspiration, which you canât really control or direct but just try to stay balanced on and let it go where it wills, and the other foot on Craft, which you can and do and must control as you go or youâre going to fall in the water. Somehow leading and being lead, the way you make a shamble in the moment with every bit of skill you have but without overthinking it or it being entirely a conscious process, is what keeps you upright and riding the water, instead of falling in and drowning.Â
We can also understand how poems work on their readers (and in some cases their writers) by considering poetry itself as something like the Discworld: something improbable and wonderful (and sometimes completely unwonderful) where reality as we (think we) know it is turned on its head, but to a point and purpose - like carnival âfunâ mirrors teach us, perspective is everything. As light moves more slowly through the thick magical field encompassing the Disc, so that which enables us to see is slowed down enough in/by/as poetry to illuminate our perspective in substantial, affecting ways.Â
In Discworld, people need witches. They need leaders who lead through service; they need, essentially, ditch diggers. People who do the dirty jobs, people who know things that others donât. People who live on the hard edge of life, to take on the tough questions and the tough issues and the tough people. People who are âinâ society enough to nudge it along, but âoutsideâ enough to see the big picture and the other people who get forgotten. People who can be part of, but still other. They donât often acknowledge their need, and sometimes outright deny it. They fear witches and sometimes resent them. In many places, theyâre completely dismissed or even not believed in at all. In the real world, poets and poetry fulfill a function very like that: poets and poetry are quite frequently misunderstood, patronized, ignored, taken for granted. Like witches, getting poets to work together is harder than herding cats. Weâre a Society that doesnât work at all like a society, except for the part where we donât have a leader because our leaders say we donât have leaders that way. (âGranny Weatherwax would never stand for that sort of thing,â sort of thing; the establishment being anti-establishment is such a trip to watch play out, especially on social media.) Poetry, like witchcraft, is the art of edges: between life and death, grief and joy; thresholds, doorways, liminal spaces. Poetry itself bridges the edges between different art forms: it can be visual, narrative, lyric, musical, or any combination; it takes cues from painting and digital art and hand-worked crafts. As Discworldâs witches do in a literal way, poets do in a particularly distilled and dangerous fashion the inner edge-work that moves human beings through the most intense and wordless or word-defying moments of their lives - and deaths - as well as the slog-work that helps lubricate the enormous wheels of the daily grind.Â
The brilliance of Discworld is that itâs a large-scale multi-level functioning metaphor; it works for people of diverse convictions and perspectives; and it provides physical, concrete ways to understand stuff thatâs almost completely abstract in real life.Â
Plus, as a poet/Discworld witch you get to wear black, distinctive hats, and bow instead of curtsey. All checks in the âproâ column.
