My journey to being a witch started with an online quiz.
I’ve always been attracted to witchcraft and the occult. The idea that we create our own magick and bring meaning into the world resonated with me more than my Catholic upbringing. But I never pursued it (See the aforementioned Catholic upbringing).
But while I’ve been in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been fulfilling promises that I made to myself.
I quit my job.
I left toxic social spaces.
I finally started learning how to read tarot.
I also spent a lot of time listening to podcasts.
Teen Creeps is a YA pulp fiction podcast that I devoured. I even began to support the creators on Patreon. This gained me access to bonus episodes.
The hosts like to take online quizzes during many of their bonus episodes. Most are intentionally silly or created by angsty 14-year-olds in 2009. I loved listening to hosts Lindsay and Kelly take the quizzes but never felt included to take one myself.
Then they stumbled upon “What Kind of Witch Are You?”
The results of the quiz were not what I expected. Cottage Witch. Lunar Witch. Kitchen Witch. Warrior Witch. I was unfamiliar with these terms. And yet, they made the concept of witchcraft sound so much more real to me.
I took the quiz.
I am a Shadow Witch.

I didnt know what a Shadow Witch was before I took that quiz, but the description clung to my heart.
“You are a witch who is focused on shadow work. Shadow work is the process of learning to become aware, to understand and to transmute your own shadows into strengths and superpowers. Getting deep with yourself and doing this intimate work is a big part of your spiritual practice. Journaling, meditation and breathwork are all excellent tools for processing your shadows. The path of the shadow witch is not all gloomy though – the act of transmuting your shadows is one of shining a light on all the parts of yourself and learning to love yourself exactly as you are!”
“Shadow work” was another phrase I was unfamiliar with. Yet it made perfect sense to me.
I meditate to work on my anger issues.
I write to channel my insecurities.
I started reading tarot to better understand my own thoughts and feelings.
If shadow work is taking your struggles and turning them into strengths, that sounds pretty wonderful.
The quiz didn’t convince me to become a witch—it just pushed me to go after something I already wanted. It made me realize that I was already on the path I wanted to go down.
I am a Shadow Witch.
At least I would like to be.

5 Essential Oils for the Full Moon
by witchoflupinehollow
I’m really excited to start doing more posts about essential oils! I’ll be sharing several posts over the next few weeks and months about using essential oils in your rituals and spells. Specifically, I’m working with Young Living oils, but you can use whichever essential oils you prefer for singles (although blends are generally proprietary to individual companies.)

The Ultimate List of Witchy Resources
The Ultimate List of Witchy Resources
by witchoflupinehollow
I’ve been asked by quite a few people how I’ve learned what I just seem to ‘know’ about magick and witchcraft. And that’s a fair question! We aren’t always so great about sharing our sources on the internet, as opposed to in a more academic setting, so I thought I would do a massive roundup of all my favorite witchy resources for you.
Though this is by no means a…

May’s full moon is the Flower Moon. It’s a time of joyous celebration; our gardens are in full bloom and the sun is staying up much longer. In fact, the longest day of the year is just five short weeks away.
In honor of the Flower Moon, I thought it would…

Beltane Ritual for Sensuality
Beltane Ritual for Sensuality
by witchoflupinehollow
We’ve discussed it before: Beltane is all about sensuality. It’s one of the most potently sexual of the sabbats as this is the time when the flowers blossom, the air gets warmer and the seeds planted at Imbolc and Ostara come to fruition. Some Wiccans celebrate with the Great Rite, a metaphorical or literal sex ritual.
I’m taking the opportunity for a little sensual…

Lavender Sugar Recipe for Beltane
Lavender Sugar Recipe for Beltane
by witchoflupinehollow
There are two things I associate with Beltane more than anything else: flowers and sweets! This recipe combines both into one delicious treat. Lavender sugar is one of my favorite recipes all year long but it’s especially appropriate at Beltane.
You can stir it into your coffee or tea or sprinkle it on top of pastries brushed with egg before baking. You could even use…

Home Apothecary Tour
by witchoflupinehollow
Welcome to my Home Apothecary! So, as I’ve mentioned in the past, I live in a little townhouse in a medium-sized city in California. I have a mostly-shaded patio where I attempt to grow a decent garden, an abundance of candles and a kitchen windowsill lined with plants (which you guys see all the time in my blog photos!)
Ever since I was a little kid, I was fascinated…

Spell for the Outward Projection of Your Inner Beauty
Spell for the Outward Projection of Your Inner Beauty
by witchoflupinehollow
There are a thousand idioms regarding the deceptive nature of beauty.
“Beauty is only skin deep.”
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Beauty is often an elusive thing determined by unfair and exclusive societal norms. Our society’s ideal beauty is generally focused on slender bodies, large breasts, delicate features, tan skin and perfect manicures, not all of which…

Protection while traveling has long been one of the most popular types of spells to cast. With everything from St. Christopher’s charms hanging from our rear view mirrors to protective crystals in our pockets, witches might come across as awfully paranoid! But really, when you think about it, there…
