A little animation for Asexual Awareness Week.
It took me a long time to realise this was me.
Discovering that asexuality was a thing changed my life.
I am not alone.
And neither are you.

My journey to being a witch started with an online quiz.
I’ve always been attracted to witchcraft and the occult. The idea that we create our own magick and bring meaning into the world resonated with me more than my Catholic upbringing. But I never pursued it (See the aforementioned Catholic upbringing).
But while I’ve been in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been fulfilling promises that I made to myself.
I quit my job.
I left toxic social spaces.
I finally started learning how to read tarot.
I also spent a lot of time listening to podcasts.
Teen Creeps is a YA pulp fiction podcast that I devoured. I even began to support the creators on Patreon. This gained me access to bonus episodes.
The hosts like to take online quizzes during many of their bonus episodes. Most are intentionally silly or created by angsty 14-year-olds in 2009. I loved listening to hosts Lindsay and Kelly take the quizzes but never felt included to take one myself.
Then they stumbled upon “What Kind of Witch Are You?”
The results of the quiz were not what I expected. Cottage Witch. Lunar Witch. Kitchen Witch. Warrior Witch. I was unfamiliar with these terms. And yet, they made the concept of witchcraft sound so much more real to me.
I took the quiz.
I am a Shadow Witch.

I didn’t know what a Shadow Witch was before I took that quiz, but the description clung to my heart.
“You are a witch who is focused on shadow work. Shadow work is the process of learning to become aware, to understand and to transmute your own shadows into strengths and superpowers. Getting deep with yourself and doing this intimate work is a big part of your spiritual practice. Journaling, meditation and breathwork are all excellent tools for processing your shadows. The path of the shadow witch is not all gloomy though – the act of transmuting your shadows is one of shining a light on all the parts of yourself and learning to love yourself exactly as you are!”
“Shadow work” was another phrase I was unfamiliar with. Yet it made perfect sense to me.
I meditate to work on my anger issues.
I write to channel my insecurities.
I started reading tarot to better understand my own thoughts and feelings.
If shadow work is taking your struggles and turning them into strengths, that sounds pretty wonderful.
The quiz didn’t convince me to become a witch—it just pushed me to go after something I already wanted. It made me realize that I was already on the path I wanted to go down.
I am a Shadow Witch.
At least I would like to be.
