Witches in Love
A 60 minute Writing Sprint by Jenni Powell

“Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again.
Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again.”
“Honey, I’m home!,” Sylvia Snitch exclaimed as she burst through the castle gate.  Well, she didn’t exactly “burst” as the gate was heavy and quite rusty.  It was more like she grunted and groaned her way through.  But that didn’t spoil her mood.
Until she entered the sitting room and saw Agatha’s face.
Normally, this was Sylvia’s favorite room in the entire complex.  It was filled with overstuffed chairs, couches, and loveseats all upholstered in a lovely light blue velvet with a damask patterning.  One entire wall was a huge fireplace, which filled the room not only with a lovely heat but also a lovely glow.  It was a room that made Sylvia feel safe and comforted.
Sylvia tried to call up those feelings as she laid eyes on Agatha’s deep scowl matched with a deeply etched frown.  Normally, Agatha’s eyes were a sparkling blue but right now they raged with a look like storm clouds.
Sylvia stopped in her tracks and lowered her head.  When Agatha looked this way, it was better to make herself seem as small as possible to try to avoid as much of the fallout.
“You said he’d be here over a week ago,” Agatha spat.  “You promised Sylvia.”
Sylvia couldn’t play dumb.  It was her first instinct but there was absolutely no way she could even attempt to pretend she didn’t know exactly what Agatha was talking about.
Timmy.
“It’s a really complicated situation Agatha.  I’m doing my best here.  No one has attempted what we are trying to do…”
“The Council approved our request months ago,” Agatha countered.  “And don’t give me that bullshit about delaying for the sake of the nuns.  I don’t care how attached to him they have become…”
“It’s not the nuns,” Sylvia interrupted.  “I had to get the vampires involved because of Vlad and Larissa’s little stunt and you know how much red tape gets involved once you get those vampires involved.”
“But I thought the curse was in place for that exact reason,” Agatha countered again.  She was good at that.  Too good.
Sylvia ran a hand nervously through her mousey brown hair.  “Yeah, about that…,” she started sheepishly.
A look of realization passed across Agatha’s face.  “Oh my goddess,” she began.  “You didn’t register the curse with The Council, did you?”
Sylvia lifted her hands up defensively.  “Look, we already had so much going with The Council with trying to gain custody of Timmy that I didn’t want to bog things down with a meager little Curse Approval.”
Agatha let out a frustrated growl.  “Sylvia, we’ve talked about this!  You already have a reputation for going rogue with The Council and they warned us...on numerous occasions I might add...that any unregistered magical actions by you could result in our application automatically being denied.  And then you went off and did that very thing!  What is wrong with you!”  She flopped into the nearest high-backed chair and began to cry.
Sylvia rushed over to her and got down on her knees in front of Agatha.  She attempted to reach out for Agatha’s hands but Agatha pulled them quickly out of Sylvia’s grip and attempted to turn her head away from Sylvia.
But Sylvia wasn’t going to let Agatha push her way.  Sylvia took her left hand and gently placed it under Agatha’s chin, turning her face back towards her.
“Aggie,” Sylvia said in as gentle a voice as possible.  “I know I make loving me hard sometimes.  I know it seems like sometimes I don’t listen and I disregard what people tell me if it doesn’t fit in with what I want to do.  But I promise you on the soul that I sold to the devil, I want nothing more than to bring little Timmy home to you so you can be the most wonderful witchy mother I know you can be.  We’ve been through so much already just to prove to The Council that us being together was our right, why would I purposefully risk all that?”
Agatha sniffled and brought a hand up to her face to wipe some tears away.  “Remember when I was arranged to marry that awful Warlock and you challenged him to a fight to the death just to get the chance to be with me?”
“I sure do,” Sylvia smiled at the memory.
“And you turned him into a newt and used him in a love potion,” Agatha continued.
Sylvia nodded and added, “I offered you the potion and what did you say?”
“I don’t need a potion to love you.  I already do,” Agatha finished.
Sylvia leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on Agatha’s forehead.  Then tilted Agatha’s chin up to place a longer kiss on her lips.  She looked into Agatha’s eyes and murmured, “Now that that is all settled, what’s for dinner?”
Agatha rolled her eyes and pushed Sylvia away playfully.  “You’re damn lucky I love you or else I’d have returned the favor and turned you into a newt a long time ago.  I think we have some leftover Shepherd's Pie in the icebox, let me go see about heating it up.”
Agatha pulled herself up out of the chair with some effort and moved her way out of the room.  As she got to the doorway toward the hallway that would take her to the kitchen, she placed one hand on the doorframe and turned back to Sylvia.  “I love you.”
Sylvia, still on her knees in front of the chair Agatha had just left, looked up at her.  “I love you too.”
Agatha smiled a genuine smile and turned and left the room.
Sylvia let out a deep sigh and took her time getting to her feet.  She moved to the fireplace and gazed into the roaring fire, deep in thought.
Sylvia had been once again successful in drawing Agatha’s focus away from Timmy and the fact that Sylvia hadn’t brought him home yet despite The Council’s approval.  What Agatha didn’t know was that the delay had nothing to do with Vlad and Larissa’s little Halloween transgression.
The delay was actually rather simple...Sylvia was simply buying time.  And every moment of it was precious.
Witches were capable of many things.  Creating curses, making potions, turning animals into familiars…
...using magic to make someone forget that they were dying.
Agatha was sick.  Very sick.  And when it comes to cancer, witches actually can’t do a whole lot, especially when they have already sold their soul to the devil.
If that is the case, as it was with Sylvia, you have to find another soul to sell in its place.
The Devil knew what soul he wanted.  The soul of a young orphan boy who was deeply loved but deeply touched by tragedy.
The soul he wanted was Timmy's.
Sylvia would do anything to make Agatha happy.  She would beg, borrow, steal, curse.  But Agatha’s one desire above all others was to be a mother.  And because she couldn’t have children of her own, Sylvia searched for a way to bring one into her life.  Agatha had fallen in love with Timmy the first time she saw him in his natural mother’s arms at a concert Agatha and Sylvia had attended on their 5th anniversary.  Sylvia saw the love in Agatha’s eyes and knew she’d do anything so that Agatha could have that look in her eyes always and forever.
But now there might not be a forever.  If Sylvia didn’t give Timmy’s soul to the Devil, Agatha would die.  But then Sylvia would have to figure out how to tell Agatha that she couldn’t have her greatest desire...to be a mother to Timmy.
Sylvia continued to gaze into the fire, her conundrum on an endless loop within her mind.  Every possible outcome spun away in her thoughts and none of them seemed to end with a Happily Ever After.
But were witches in love ever truly going to end up with a Happily Ever After?
“Dinner’s ready,” Agatha called out cheerfully from the kitchen.
Sylvia pulled herself out of her maudlin thoughts.  There might not be an “ever after” but now, in this very moment, Sylvia could focus on “happily”.

she smells good. really good. and she’s doing The Face. the one where she’s excited about something and she wants to share it but doesn’t want to seem like she’s too smart, even though I know she is, smarter than anyone i’ve ever met and we’re just 15. she tends to downplay her intelligence ever since she was once told that the Sorting Hat had made a mistake and that she should have been in Ravenclaw. she cried that night. i don’t think the Gryffindor boy meant it as a criticism but she that had been her Family’s house and there was so much pressure surrounding it and she didn’t get sorted into it. she dealt with her Family’s frustration and disappointment and made it into a badge of honor and prided herself on being different. but that deep rooted sense of inadequacy and need of approval was still there.
right now she’s telling me about how the Muggle medicinal practices are increasing and becoming so complex and so close to magic. she wants to be Healer like her mother. however she has a particular interest in Muggle studies and more than anything wants to assist and bring awareness of magical properties to Muggles. her brow wrinkles and she goes into yet another tangent of how unfair the separation of magical and non-magical persons is and how our peoples are both so advanced in different ways and we could seriously benefit each other if we just tried.
she pauses, scanning my face.
‘sorry,’ she says nervously scratching above her top lip ‘you probably don’t want to hear about this again’. she starts piling up her books and collecting her things.
‘what?’ after a brief pause in which my eyebrows pull together and i shake my head. “i-’ i start to say how i love to hear her talk about anything, especially those subjects that bring about such passion when she turns to look at me her eyes flickering between mine looking for something. I’m taken aback by her look and forget what to say momentarily. eventually i regain myself and finish.
she swallows and nods softly. She runs a hand over the top of her head that is cut short and emphasizes (with the exception of her ears) her resemblance to a pixie. her ears are large and stick out jauntily from the sides of her head. i think they give her a charming and endearing quality. she hates them. when i asked her why she cut her hair despite the fact she responded that it was to force herself to come to terms with herself, both in mind and body. both of which were lovely to me.
reluctantly she pushed back her chair stating that she needed to get to Herbology, in which she was already late. she bent wrapping her arms around me engulfing me in the smell of soft vanilla. she stood walking down the library aisle turning halfway down to smile at me over her should and wave goodbye. i stared at her long after she was gone and cursed myself for being so weak and obvious. i flipped my book open to the page we had left off on and inside was a piece of parchment with what was obviously a quick sketch of the two of us dancing. it was signed and had a ‘xoxo’ of which i taught her the meaning.
could this mean? no it couldn’t, could it? did she...did she like me back?

Year One, Part 1
She stepped off the train my pulse beating rapidly the air was filled with smoke and I coughed involuntarily. Her eyes welled up but she refused to wave a hand to dissipate the smoke reluctant to draw any more attention to myself than I already had. The small wire cage in her right hand shook as if the creature inside knew that she was thinking of it.
Older students nearby who were chatting with their friends who they hadn’t seen since the year before shot her looks of curiosity and concern. She was rather a sight. Puberty, while not a very attractive time for anyone was especially hard on her. Her limbs were long, gangly. Hair, which could be considered a lovely shade was stringy and was roughly tucked behind both ears due to nervousness and impatience. The robe was clean, pristine and had been ironed by her mother to perfection.
Her mother was a muggle and while having put two daughters through Wizarding school already it hadn’t been at Hogwarts. Since she was the last of the children her parents were able to afford the more expensive school. She could feel her sibling’s resentment towards her. They hid it most of the time but it still hurt.
Someone bumped into her as they exited the train where she had stopped, overwhelmed. That brought her back and she walked into the crowd not really sure where she was going. She took a deep breath.
‘I can do this’ she whispered to herself

🦇👻13Days13Shorts 🎃☠️
13 Days 13 Shorts is an online celebration of Halloween where the last 13 days of October each get a theme and people make creative projects inspired by those themes!
I have been participating in #13days13shorts since it started 11 years ago in October of 2007. A year after Omar and I graduated from San Jose High School (formally known as San Jose High Academy). Every year @omarnajamfilm out does himself with amazing theme selections and ways of including everyone from beginners to those of us who are seasoned. Each year I pick 1 to 3 themes and I try to be creative in some way. The submissions that 13 Days 13 Shorts gets are no joke there are some really amazing talented people out there and happy to say that my submissions are sprinkled in there surrounded by the best. This year I’ve decided to #challenge myself and submit for every day and every theme. Since right now my life is pretty much all about yoga what best way to celebrate #Halloween and #13days13shorts than by creating my own little #yogachallenge using each theme to represent some sort of #yogapose!

My! Favorite! Project! For the theme Witches in Love, I made a cute little mix (and note, because ~narrative~) that I imagine a witch would give another witch to confess her love to her. For romantic, spooky nights up in the big blue-black sky. This goes out to anyone crushin’ hard this Halloween; may your love spells be as powerful as your big ol' hearts.
