Bit of buzz from the Warhammer corner of the internet. I'm not a fan myself - in fact I find the whole fandom's lunatic brigade exceptionally repellent and their abject refusal to accept critique both internal and external makes even being on the periphery a chore
However everytime I hear the Warhammer fandom get excited about something I immediately think of that Raycevick video entitled "I'm Jealous of Warhammer", particularly the part in the beginning where he immediately admits that it's actually a Mass Effect video
Long story short he's envious of Warhammer's constant churning out of canon media, and the degree to which the Warhammer fandom has access to any and all manner of things they might come to enjoy in different genres and perspectives, from studios who benefit from generous licensing and a permissive IP owner
In the meantime, like the rest of the Mass Effect fandom, he's starved for any kind of content for a world he is enamoured with from a company whose sole strategy is an all-or-nothing, once in a generation, multimliion dollar crapshoot one bad day away from completely killing its creators and indeed almost did. And we're essentially dreading that the next will be that killing blow
Sure Warhammer has the advantage of being Warhammer with its four decade long business model making the IP a low risk option of video game developers but otherwise I agree that it pains me to be gasping for content. It's why I'm in the fandom in the first place, hell it's why I'm on tumblr. I wouldn't come on tumblr just for the asylum vibes* alone
I was nostalgia-tripping on one of my people's most famous gaming exports, the Wipeout series of anti-gravity racing. Yeah, I thought, that would be so cool to transplant a similar concept into the Mass Effect universe. It'd be easy to justify in lore - aristocratic scions, playboy dilletantes and nouveau-riche magnates compete in eezo-powered, gravity-defying, piloting on vertigo-inducing racetracks of staggering size and cost, with all the egotism and risk-taking that that implies. How cool would having a racing game set in the Mass Effect universe with that universe's world-building
Indeed we could even have one that would appeal to their investors. How about Mass Effect: Battlefield? Applying the lessons learnt from ME3MP and put them in a mainline Battlefield game with the scale and spectacle. Imagine this - the post-war galaxy gives rise to mercenaries and adventurers, tyrants and freedom fighters, battling to hoard power for themselves, or profit off the chaos to line their own pockets
And those are just high-level concepts. The Mass Effect series was deliberately designed to be a world, not just a video game, and it was always the intention to tell numerous stories within it. It's a testament to its worldbuilding that fanfiction writers of all shapes and sizes still continue to write in that universe despite how long it's been since our last outing there
Yet here we are. Still starved for more official media. Because the Powers That Be want a gigahit, when it was never intended to be all or nothing. Meanwhile the Inquisitor Cryptofash'es of the Warhammer fandom can freely gorge themselves on the thing they love. Makes my blood boil
*No, I STAY here for that

Oh btw it was zoomer Huey that pointed out the BP hypocrisy. Also yeah about the entitlement black Americans have towards black Panther
>That was created by 2 Jewish men as well, which if the current system is running that means they're white too, (handy when it's not flip flopping every other day, someone puts a horn in a game they're an oppressed minority. )
I shit you not I saw a black socialist YouTuber saying he was surprised that white guys could write stories about a black man protecting his home from invaders
Are you saying you surprised that T’Challa fought to protect his home by invaders even though he was created, written, and overview by
SONS
OF
DAVID?!
It not like half of the holidays Kirby and Lee grew up and celebrated their entires lives were based off how many times invaders tried to wipeout their people but failed
But here the thing about that racist person
It hurts writers like ME
I want more black mecha pilots, I want more black stories tbh told.
But I DONT want them to be solely defined by their races and act racist as fuck
Fuck I hate modern black writers, they are the childhood bullies that now call their victims coons when they get pointed out
It not like half of the holidays Kirby and Lee grew up and celebrated their entires lives were based off how many times invaders tried to wipeout their people but failed
That bit about Louis Armstrong and his Lithuanian Jewish neighbors who he was surprised to see were still treated badly by other "white™ people" I don't blame him for not getting the whole Jewish thing, people still don't as you've seen lately.
I want more black mecha pilots, I want more black stories tbh told. But I DONT want them to be solely defined by their races and act racist as fuck Fuck I hate modern black writers, they are the childhood bullies that now call their victims coons when they get pointed out
That's one of the nice thing about scifi just make everyone not human, but that doesn't work for what you want I know.
Could go and watch "Our Gang" see how Buckwheat does his thing.
Jefferson's were great hell Cosby show was good, bill kinda killed that being wholesome the same way we lost 7th heaven except stephen collins didn't fight it.
I loved Sanford and Son as a kid, we wouldn't get something like that now, not because of white racists but because everyone seems to be dead set on making everyone a stereotypical representation of their race/skin colour.
You, just write your stories though don't bother with the haters.
One of the good things about making Dumbledore gay after the fact is nobody could try and dissect his behaviour to say X is gay culture.
I also don't think the Rowling thought about him being gay till after the fact anyhow, but in the end for the one character it doesn't really matter.
Only thing that changed when the announcement was made other than the jokes was that ok he was gay, had no baring on his character at all.
So write your stories and whomever is black they can be black just write them however you feel.
I think South Park is great for all that since we get Token Black, and he's treated exactly the same as all the other kids by all the other kids.
They rip on him.

Some thoughts on 0080 (Spoilers)
(As per usual, this whole thing is just a huge ramble that may or may not be coherent so I apologize for that in advance)
I dont usually run into media that hits me like a brick.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is a heartbreaking story that brilliantly utilizes the concept of the "one year war", established in the main series, to truly bring a tale that perfectly complements the values of Gundam with an amazing critique on war.
Where do I begin...
It all takes place in a small neutral colony (A colony is like a small city earth in space). It’s a beautiful place.
0080 is a beautiful series to look at, the colors are so vibrant, the animation is great, the retro-future look everything has is a treat to the eyes.
It’s a normal town with normal people living their daily lives.
The main PoV in the whole OVA is that of an elementary school kid, Alfred Izuruha
and this is the thing that makes 0080 unique from all the other side stories
In making the main PoV that of a childs instead of a soldiers, we get to see how war has influenced the youth in this colony and how Al reacts to the reality of war.
The way "War in the Pocket" critiques the indoctrination of children into war is amazing and leaves you disturbed at the sight of a whole elementary school exited for a possible next war after witnessing the horrors of this one.
The pacing of the whole thing is a bit slow but it’s the good kind of slow. It sets up everything, the world, the characters, the factions and their roles in this story, the relations between some characters.
It builds everything slowly and then it shows you how it destroys it.
Seeing this lovely world with a dark side introduced in the first three episodes ONLY FOR THE LATER 3 TO HAPPEN... GOD...
(Start of Spoilers)
Seeing Bernie slowly treat Al like a younger brother and grow fond of him is so sweet.
Bernie and Chris being cool around each other.
The Zeon team hanging out, they are not good people but they all feel like drinking friends
they deserve a better life than fighting for the war.
Alot of time is spent with the characters, its a very personal story.
I apreciate the restraint on action on the entire thing.
Every time there is action, something horrible happens.
Heres some thoughts I had in the middle of watching the final few episodes
-I fear -What will happen -Yknow -I have seen some of UC before -But the fear that comes every time a MS is brought up here -Every time... every time something horrible happens
My thoughts haven't changed.
The action is brutal.
Everything is brutal.
and after those peaceful days... everything happens.
The wipeout of the Zeon team
Bernie's resolve to fight for the colony, to protect for Al's home from the nuclear threat... ONLY FOR THAT THREAT TO BE TAKEN CARE OF OFF SCREEN.
The heartbreak of seeing this young guy throw himself to death for no reason anymore.
Seeing Bernie's recording that scene... it’s everything 0080 stands for
"Don't hate the Gundam pilot and don’t go hating the feddie soldiers because they are like us, you and me. They are just people simply doing what they think is right, that’s all. I know that it’s hard but try not to hate them".
Everything ending with the dramatic irony of Bernie asking Al to say hi to Chris and Chris asking Al to say goodbye to Bernie.
and back at the elementary, hearing some of the most chilling words ive ever heard at the end of a show.
"Al don't cry, cmon! You know another war will start soon and when they close the school we'll be able to check out all the cool stuff! it'll be more than this time!"
It hurts.
I will never forget this. what a cruel way to get back into gundam.
10/10
Thats all I got in me atm. I know its a incoherent mess as is most of the things I write about media. I deeply apologize for this wall of text

Hot New Releases - Wipeout 3 on Game Players Vol.121(Video game magazine)(Hong Kong)(26/02/2000)
Translation in English:
Playstation 1
Manufacturer: SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT Price: 5800 Yen Memory: at least 1 BLOCK Release date: on sale Capacity: CD-ROM 1-2 Players / Compatible with DUALSHOCK/Compatible with NEGCON
The fastest race in human history
The original future racing game "WIPE OUT" has been released for three episodes, The graphics and fluency of the game are definitely not inferior to other PS racing games. Maybe because the background of the story is the future, some functions can be saved. As for the quality of the game itself is not bad, and you can use weapons to attack opponents, readers who like this kind of future racing may wish to play.
Operation method (for hand button)
As this game is not a normal racing car, so the operation is a little different from the normal racing car (in fact, just use a few more buttons), and now will introduce its operation method:
← Turn left → Turn right ↑ Up ↓ Down □ Use Weapons △ Change the viewpoint X speed up O Give up weapons L1 Rear Viewpoint R1 HYPERTHRUST L2 LEFT AIRBRAKE R2 RIGHT AIRBRAKE
Game play and Tips
The gameplay is basically not much different from that of regular racing, but the game has weapons, energy (that is HP) and HYPERTHRUST, which are relatively rare (or almost non-existent) in regular racing games, so there are obviously more things to pay attention to. The way to get weapons is to drive through the floor of those special colors, if the floor is purple, the weapons obtained are used for attack (such as MINES, ROCKETS, etc.), yellow is the auxiliary system (such as HP absorption, automatic control, shields, etc.), the appearance is random, so if you are not satisfied, you can press 〇 to give it up and take it again (you can also press the button to release it in use). As for blue, you won't get any weapons, but it will increase the speed of the car (for a short time), and you can move at high speed for a short time with HYPERTHRUST. HYPERTHRUST is a HP-consuming acceleration method, so do not use it recklessly, or the car will be easily crashed.
Weapons List
AUTO-PILOT: It can be operated automatically within a certain period of time after starting, and can be used to handle troublesome corners.
FORCE WALL: Creates a force field that resists magnetic enemies on the track, which can be destroyed.
CLOAK: It will not be LOCK-ON by enemy vehicles within a certain period of time after starting.
ROCKET: A missile fired forward.
GRAVITY SHIELD: It will not take damage for a certain period of time after activation.
MULTI-MISSLES Shoots guided missiles that can be LOCK-ON.
REFLECTOR: It can reflect the attack of enemy vehicles for a certain period of time.
QUAKE DISRUPTOR: The track shakes, but the car in front is injured, and the destructible objects can be destroyed at the same time.
ENERGY DRAIN: Absorb energy from nearby enemy vehicles.
PLASMA BOLT: Hitting an enemy vehicle immediately destroys it, and destructible objects can be destroyed at the same time.
MINES: Releases floating mines behind the car, which can be destroyed.
Basic game mode introduction
SINGLE RACE Players compete with other cars on the track. The number of enemy cars can be freely adjusted in the OPTION (optional). If the CHECKPOINT is not reached within the time limit, it will be GAME OVER. If the energy is insufficient, it can be replenished at the PIT.
TIME TRIAL There is only one opponent in this mode, and no weapons will appear at the same time, but it is the same as SINGLE MODE and reach CHECKPOINT within the time limit. Like similar games, this mode has a "ghost car", but the conditions for it to appear are other than completing this mode , but also use 2 BLOCK to record data.

Cute Girls Sketches
I love drawing cute girls, okay?
This one was made on 2023, and she was an OC who was originally a WipEout OC. A Chilean AG racer part representing Chile's company of AG Technology, Suyai Industries. But I'm debating between that and making her a mecha pilot a-la-Cyberbots.
After that, these are made in 2024.
These two are made differently. I don't remember the context for these two girls. I do know the spiky girl one gives me Nene vibes.
While I love the girl with a hat and scarf. I think she's inspired by a girl who I saw on a trip to Talcahuano, who was dressed in a really cute way! I want to use that design for something, I hope.
These two abnormal girls were a try to differ from my classic anatomy. The girl of the left was Skullgirls inspired, with her hair and scorpion motif. She had like an acrobat vibe, trying to make a dynamic pose but... I must do something better.
While the girl with the horns and abnormal feet is a try to differ my normal anatomy. Just that. I did it during my lack of ideas and motivation moments.
This one was drawn after I saw a YT Short animation with Phonk. I ended up putting that short was background noise while drawing an Idol-esque girl becoming insane.
I'll admit that this is a try of anatomy.
This girl, Fulmine, is an Italian girl cyborg who's going to be part of one of my personal projects.
And I almost forgot about these girls. Made for practice! From left to right, The first girl was an attempt for fashion and trying a more adult worman. The second one is based on that cute fashionable girl I saw on that trip to Talcahuano! While the third unfinished one is an anatomy attempt for more chubby girls.
Hope you like it!

GPS Is Under Attack (NYT) The Global Positioning System runs the modern world. But it is under daily attack. This year alone, researchers say, more than 60,000 commercial flights have been hit by bogus GPS signals, which can confuse pilots. The American GPS network that was once the gold standard is at risk of becoming a relic as Chinese, Russian and European systems modernize. Without GPS, much of modern life would falter. Delayed ambulances. Extended power cuts. No cellphone signals. Yet the U.S. has no civilian backup system. GPS satellites are getting old, many exceeding the designed lifespan of 8 to 15 years, and the U.S. has been slow to replace them.
Student Loan Borrowers Owe $1.6 Trillion. Nearly Half Aren’t Paying. (NYT) After an unprecedented three-year timeout on federal student loan payments because of the pandemic, millions of borrowers began repaying their debt when billing resumed late last year. But nearly as many have not. That reality, along with court decisions that regularly upend the rules, has complicated the government’s efforts to restart its system for collecting the $1.6 trillion it is owed. At the end of March, six months after the hiatus ended, nearly 20 million borrowers were making their payments as scheduled. But almost 19 million were not, leaving their accounts delinquent, in default or still on pause, according to the latest Education Department data.
U.S. will fund deportations from Panama, expanding migrant crackdown (Washington Post) The Biden administration will begin paying for Panama to detain and deport more of the migrants streaming through Central America en route to the United States, the latest White House effort to curb illegal crossings at the southern border, officials said Tuesday. The $6 million pilot program is the administration’s first attempt to fund deportations in a foreign country. More than 500,000 migrants entered Panama illegally last year, and officials there have appealed to the United States for help, saying Panama lacks the resources to contend with the influx.
Hurricane Beryl Caused ‘Unimaginable’ Damage in Grenada, Leader Says (NYT) As Hurricane Beryl headed toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands late Tuesday as a powerful Category 4 storm, a clearer picture emerged of the devastation it had caused on two small islands in Grenada, with that country’s leader calling the destruction “unimaginable” and “total.” “We have to rebuild from the ground up,” Grenada’s prime minister, Dickon Mitchell, said at a briefing after visiting the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which were ravaged by Beryl on Monday. Officials said about 98 percent of the buildings on the islands, where about 6,000 people live, had been damaged or destroyed, including Carriacou’s main health facility, the Princess Royal Hospital, and its airport and marinas. As of Tuesday night, there was no electricity on either island, and communications were down. Crops had been ravaged, and fallen trees and utility poles littered the streets. But the death toll appeared to be low. (Later) On Wednesday, Jamaica was lashed with a surge of water, damaging winds and flooding rainfall from Hurricane Beryl, the strongest storm the island has experienced in over a decade. Beryl passed just south of the island, knocking out power for thousands and causing all three of the country’s international airports to close.
Britain’s Conservatives face an ‘extinction-level’ event (Washington Post) After 14 years in power, Britain’s Conservatives appear headed for a historic defeat. A survey conducted last month by the Telegraph, a newspaper well-known for its Conservative leanings, projected a “Tory wipeout,” with the former ruling party dropping to a mere 53 seats from its current 365 in the House of Commons, and Labour securing a startling 516-seat haul. Sunak would lose his own seat, according to the survey, as would two-thirds of his cabinet. Not for nothing, some pundits and analysts have cast the election as a possible “extinction-level” event for the Tories, who have presided over an astonishing period of political and economic turbulence since winning power in 2010 under then-party leader David Cameron. In that time, Britain has had five prime ministers, multiple financial shocks, a pandemic, and the dramatic rupture and rolling, years-long crisis of Brexit.
What DIY dentistry has to do with the British election (Washington Post) Layla Waters pulled out five of her own teeth after not being able to get an appointment with a National Health Service dentist. This kind of do-it-yourself dentistry has become increasingly common in the United Kingdom. There are reports of people yanking out their teeth with pliers from the garden shed, fixing crowns with superglue and traveling abroad for dental care. Local politicians’ inboxes are filled with complaints from constituents upset with lack of access to affordable dentistry. This helps to explain how dentistry, which accounts for a small part of the NHS budget, has emerged as one of the top local issues in the U.K. general election. All of the major parties mention dentistry in their manifestos. When the NHS began in 1948, dentistry was free for patients. But by 1951, charges were introduced. Some people are still exempt, such as children and those on low incomes, while a majority of adults pay a subsidized rate. But securing an appointment with an NHS dentist can be hard. Earlier this year, the police were called to manage crowds who gathered outside of a newly opened dental practice in Bristol.
Russia’s glide bombs keep falling on its own territory (Washington Post) The powerful glide-bombs that Russia has used to such great effect to pound Ukrainian cities into rubble have also been falling on its own territory. At least 38 of the bombs, which have been credited with helping drive Russia’s recent territorial advances, crashed into the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine between April 2023 and April 2024, according to an internal Russian document.
With Fists and Knives, Mobs Attack Syrian Refugees in Turkey (NYT) Over the past two days, angry groups of men in a half-dozen cities in Turkey have turned on the Syrian refugees living among them, damaging their shops and cars and assaulting them with fists and knives. Across the border in parts of northern Syria where Turkey holds sway, Syrians have confronted the Turkish soldiers in their midst, pelting their vehicles with rocks, tearing down Turkish flags and condemning them in street protests. The scattered violence, which has left at least seven people dead in Syria, according to a war monitor, has exposed growing cracks in the coexistence between Syrians and Turks on both sides of their shared border. After years of generally peaceful relations, recent political shifts and deepening economic distress have brought tensions to the surface. Many Turks have come to resent the 3.1 million Syrian refugees in their country and accuse them, with or without evidence, of fueling economic troubles that include low wages and persistent inflation that exceeded 75 percent in May. Support for the idea of sending Syrian refugees home has spread across Turkey’s political spectrum.
Cash-based Japan issues first new bills in two decades, designed against counterfeiting (AP) Japan issued its first new banknotes in two decades Wednesday, yen packed with 3-D hologram technology to fight counterfeiting. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida praised as “historic” the state-of-the-art anti-counterfeit traits of the new 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 1,000 yen bills. While the new bills were released with fanfare, currency already in use will remain valid. In fact, people will still need older bills to use most vending machines and to pay bus fares, local media reported. By the end of March next year, nearly 7.5 billion new banknotes will have been printed, according to the government. The amount of money in the new bills going out in a single day is estimated at 1.6 trillion yen ($10 billion). A majority of transactions in Japan still are done in cash and cashless payments have been slower to catch on than in many other countries.
New Zealand pivots right (Washington Post) After the debate between President Biden and Donald Trump turned disastrous for the incumbent Thursday, comedian Jon Stewart quipped on “The Daily Show” that he needed to “call a real estate agent in New Zealand.” Stewart was riffing on some American liberals’ fantasy when Trump was last in power. Many talked of moving to New Zealand, a faraway place they viewed as utopian, with a progressive leader in Jacinda Ardern and natural beauty that was second to none. A significant number actually did: Data from the 2018 Census shows a jump in American-born residents in New Zealand of nearly 30 percent, or more than 6,000 people, compared with five years earlier. Americans, like Stewart, looking for an escape hatch will find New Zealand a very different place this time around. Ardern is gone, and so too are her policies. This country is now led by a coalition of center-right, libertarian and populist lawmakers who have formed its most conservative government in decades.
Israel Frees Gaza Hospital Chief Held Without Charges for 7 Months (NYT) Israel released the chief of the Gaza Strip’s largest hospital on Monday after more than seven months of detention, Palestinian health officials said, a move that drew an immediate outcry in Israel even though no charges against him have been made public. Mohammad Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, was taken into custody in late November as he took part in an effort to evacuate patients from the hospital. The military said he was taken for questioning about Hamas operations at the hospital. Reaction to Dr. Abu Salmiya’s release underlined divergent views of the war both inside and outside Israel. Human rights groups said his prolonged detention without charge was a sign of Israeli mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners, many of them held for long periods with no charges or trials, while some Israeli officials on Monday denounced the decision to release him as an example of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s mismanagement of the war. Speaking at a news conference at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis after his release, Dr. Abu Salmiya, visibly frail, said that he had been released and returned to Gaza along with nearly 50 other Palestinian detainees. “We were subjected to extreme torture,” he said, adding that his finger had been broken and that he had been beaten over the head repeatedly. The Israeli Prison Service, which operates the Nafha Prison where he was last held, said in a statement that it was not aware of Dr. Abu Salmiya’s claims, and that “all prisoners are detained according to the law.”
Crime and violence among Gazans is increasing (WSJ) The situation threatens already fragile international aid operations, drawing warnings from U.S. and Arab officials who for years have worried about a complete failure of governance in Gaza. Israel broke Hamas’s grip on public order but hasn’t filled that void itself or with the Palestinian Authority, saying it wants to work with politically unaffiliated Palestinians. The Hamas-controlled police force is absent or powerless, according to residents. After the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, the country set out to destroy the U.S.-designated terrorist group in Gaza. Kenyan activists rethink strategy after protests descend into violence (Reuters) Activists behind Kenya’s anti-government protests are rethinking their strategy after demonstrations on Tuesday were marred by widespread violence and looting. The activists say the violence was the work of “goons” hired by politicians to either discredit legitimate demonstrators or advance their own agendas, but they acknowledge that it risks undermining the protest movement. “It seems the state has realised that the only way to counter this movement is by using goons to incite violence, break into people’s property, loot, and tarnish our cause,” Ojango Omondi, an activist in the capital Nairobi, told Reuters. “It’s time to go back to the drawing board and strategise on how best to overcome this violence and keep our protests focused on their true objectives.” The initial protests last month against proposed tax hikes were overwhelmingly peaceful, although the police fired tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators.

God I forgot how good the Outback era is. Broodfall was great and this issue starts A Green and Pleasant Land, another standout arc, which heads right into Inferno. It's the most creative and interesting the book has been since From the Ashes. This arc is maybe the most politically overt story Claremont does, with a blatant allegory for South African apartheid, which was a huge global focus at the time. The opening line of narration reads "This is the present. This is the world," which is a really bold stance to take in Marvel's biggest book at the time. It's not something Marvel would have published a few years before when Jim Shooter was still in charge, and it's not something you'd see now with Disney as the parent company. We open with a man sneaking through what looks like a military installation to hide his toddler son on a plane about to take off. Some soldiers take notice, so he runs off to draw them from the baby, and we learn that he's a mutant. They call him a genejoke, I think the first time that slur has been used. The soldiers, Magistrates of Genosha, pump him full of bullets, and in his last moments, he smiles because his son can live free. Cue a brutal jump cut to the next morning, where some Genoshans, are given the assignment to go collect the baby from an Australian hospital. First, though, they're ambushing another runaway, an adult mutant named Jenny who is living in Australia as a traveling emergency doctor. When her plane lands, the Genoshans try to arrest her, but luckily Maddie has picked up some shifts as a service pilot and was flying with Jenny. She sends a distress signal before being arrested herself by the Genoshans, who are not in Magistrate uniforms, call themselves the Press Gang, and have powers themselves. They tell Jenny that she fled from her duty and zap her with a scifi ray that digitizes her and sends her as a phone signal back to Genosha, before doing the same to Maddie. The X-Men arrive soon after and track the kidnappers scent to the hospital, where they're kidnapping the baby. They get into a fight, but one of them uses the fancy zapper thing to summon a bunch of Magistrates. They take out Logan and Anna and zap them away with the baby while the rest of the team engages in battle. Alex, who could barely bring himself to kill Brood last arc, is shooting to kill against mysterious enemies who hurt Maddie, which is a telling detail both about that relationship and the character. In a weird little detail, the final panel of the issue is some Aussie cops arresting the Magistrates that got knocked out by Logan and Anna. They tell them that they sure hope whoever beat them up to save the baby is doing well in the fight, which is a weirdly supportive and hopeful note to end part 1 on. Maybe it's to contrast with how evil and oppressive Genosha is in the next few issues.
This issue opens with Anna and Logan battling their way through Genoshan Magistrates until a man named Wipeout uses his powers to turn off theirs. We're then introduced to the Genegineer, a mad scientist who does experiments on mutants, whose name is Dr. David Moreau, and his son Phillip. David gets called into work by some Magistrates who pick him up in like a little rocket helicopter thing, and Phillip has a slave zap the lawn with superpowers to fix it. He arrives to study Logan and Anna, who thanks to Roma's spell are invisible to all the fancy scanning devices. He's shown the prisoners in their cells, Logan sedated and Anna curled up in a ball. He asks what's wring with her, and the head Magistrate mentions that some of the guards sexually assaulted her. He's so casually cruel and dismissive about it. If possible, it's made even worse by the fact that Anna has never in her life had a sexual experience. Her first kiss activated her powers, and since then no physical contact. She loves making jokes about it, flirting with everyone and wearing sexy outfits, but with the understanding that she'd never actually have it. And now, for the first time, she may be able to touch someone with her own hands, and that choice is immediately taken away from her. It just makes my skin crawl in a way that this book never has. Jean was violated in the Dark Phoenix Saga by Mastermind, but even then it was telepathic, which gives it at least a little distance from real life. Sexual abuse was also heavily implied in the Magik miniseries, but not as directly in your face. But this is something explicit that's happened to people I know and love, treated as lightly as real life monsters treat it. Back in Australia, the other X-Men telepathically interrogate the Magistrates in the prison, and after Betsy does a little psychic torture they're off to rescue their friends. The Press Gang, Hawkshaw Pipeline and Punchout, arrive soon after to free the Magistrates. Side note- the fact that Genoshans give their mutant slaves superhero style codenames is so insidious, especially through the lens of modern X-books, where those names are a sacred part of mutant culture. Even that gets twisted and mocked. Before we get back to the action, we cut to X-HQ, where the demon N'astirh shows up on the screen. Is this his first appearance? I can't remember. That's such a Claremont demon name. I like N'astirh. He's really polite and has a pretty humany speech pattern, which is a fun contrast against S'ym who's more the classic Christian demon. In Genosha, Phillip sees Magistrates arresting the human family of Jenny, which freaks him out. A Magistrate is rude to him until he recognizes him as the Genegineer's son and tries to apologize, saying he was only following orders. Every time that phrase pops up in X-Men, it's a very intentional Holocaust reference. Claremont, a Jewish man, equating the Magistrates to Nazis feels like a show of solidarity to those suffering under apartheid. Anna, meanwhile, has withdrawn so far into her own mind that she sees the psychic residues of all the people she's ever absorbed. It's a neat concept with a ton of potential for character exploration, which is why later writers keep coming back to this mindscape with her. Most of the residues want to attack her, except for Carol Danvers, who's as real as Anna herself. Since Anna is breaking down, Carol offers to take over the body and get them out of there. There's something very interesting about the fact that Anna, who's just had her autonomy take away by force, is now giving it to Carol, who despises her. This confident, brave hero has been so traumatized that she's afraid to face what may be her last days on Earth. And while it is scary to think there's another person inside of you who could take over, there's also a bit of wish fulfillment here, the idea that when you can't go on anymore this other part of yourself can take over and protect you. And she does; Anna!Carol (probably gonna just call her Carol) beats up two guards who Anna absorbed earlier who want revenge.
One of the guards is a woman, which I think is telling about how other marginalized communities will ally with the majority group if it can protect them. Carol then rescues Logan, who without his powers looks like a shitty old man. They look for Maddie and Jenny, but they've already been taken away. It's here that we finally learn the full, sickening truth of Genosha. Every mutant child is take away at age 13 and altered by the Genegineer. He rewrites their brains to make them obedient slaves and then alters their genetics to change their powers to whatever is the most useful for their slavers. This is called the mutate-process, turning people from free mutants to slave mutates. Suddenly the Press Gang and Wipeout go from complicit villains to heartbreaking victims. Jenny ran away from this, but now that she's been caught she's due for the slaving process. Phillip is upset because he was in love with her as a child, but his father tells him it's her duty to serve. In the room where they do this process, Maddie is also strapped down until N'astirh pops up on the screen and asks if she has a minute to talk. She says she can't so he's just like "okie dokie" and then blows up the power to the building as a favor to her. The lights going out gives Logan and Carol the chance they need to escape and begin planning their revenge.
/I don't know why but the cover of issue 237 has always been stuck in my brain. It's just Logan and Anna!Carol holding on to the top of a train. I have always thought action scenes on the top of moving trains are the coolest, maybe that's why. Anyway, we open with the Magistrates chasing a stolen aircraft which they assume holds Carol and Logan trying to escape, but it's actually empty and rigged to blow when someone opens the door. Right off the bat, this issue has two superheroes using bombs to fight back against an oppressive regime, which is a powerful statement. They're actually still in the city, trying to stay ahead of the Magistrates till the X-Men arrive. They've worked together before, and Logan is glad to see Carol again, even at the cost of Anna, who he does also consider a friend. You have to wonder how she feels about it though. All though the city, there's propaganda posters and videos advertising Genosha as a utopia for all, regardless of gender, race, or anything else. It's a pretty scathing commentary on minorities looking the other way when they aren't the one being oppressed, which is another Holocaust parallel. It's a refreshing and important theme in a book which often, especially in older stuff, strays uncomfortably close to model minority politics. They run into Phillip starting a bar fight with some Magistrates and getting arrested. It's the first human on human violence they've seen, and they hear the Magistrates mention the "mutie train," so they tail them. In the Genegineer's office, he's talking to Jenny before she goes through the brainwashing, telling her she's making an important sacrifice for the good of Genosha. She begs for freedom, so he guilts her for abandoning her duty. Finally defeated, she asks if she'll still be a nurse as a slave. He can't even give her that small, selfless comfort, planning to assign her to manual labor and use her to breed future healers. In the bonding room, they're about to start the process on Maddie when she lets out a scream that sends waves of energy. The rest of the X-Men, meanwhile, have finally arrived, and immediately start beating up Magistrates. The Magistrates are, to the X-Men, about on the same level as the Brood, to the point that Peter of all people suggests they execute them after they knock them out, but Ororo tells Betsy to wipe their minds instead. But when she opens her own mind, she's hit with a wave of psychic force that knocks her for a loop, and then we cut to Maddie's room, where the scientists have been sent flying and impaled on machinery. Back on the train, Logan and Carol are discovered, but have stolen Magistrate uniforms and IDs, so the other Magistrates send them on their way with Phillip to return him. As they drive off, Logan swears to Carol that he's going to bring this country down.
The final part opens with a telepathic transcript from the psychic studying Maddie. In her minds eye, she's a young girl picking flowers in a field and singing "Going to America" by Steeleye Span. The Magistrates call attention to that, which means Claremont wanted to. It's a song about losing your husband because he was arrested and taken away. That's an interesting insight; does she view Scott as having been forcibly taken by Jean? Or Jean as a punishment for Scott? Anyway, in the interrogation, Maddie perceived the telepath as the Genegineer, which is freaking the Genegineer out now that he's watching this. Just to freak them all out, she turn the field into Genosha and blows it up with a firebomb, and the only thing left is the Genegineer/telepath, now dressed like Mr. SInister. Maddie shows up in like. A loincloth and the highest crop top you've ever seen. It's her Goblin Queen outfit premier, and it's ridiculous slutty comic book villain, but it's also very interesting in that it looks like Jean's Hellfire outfit but instead of fancy and expensive looking it's all tattered and ragged. And instead of the Hellfire Club she's gonna throw actual hellfire at people. That part's probably a coincidence cause Claremont likes hell though. She tells the telepath he needs to be careful striking matches, and then kills everyone in the room, which is where we last saw her. We now jump to Logan, Carol, and Phillip, who they've brought into their schemes cause he wants to save Jenny. He's shocked when he sees the prison camps that the mutants live in, having turned a blind eye to the details of the slavery. The trio are caught and brought before the Genegineer. Phillip yells at his father that this is wrong and the humans deserve to know the truth of how the mutants are treated, but he says that it's no secret and people just don't care enough to look. But since Phillip won't shut up about it now, he's an enemy of the state. Logan drops a backstory hint that he's been a slave before and won't do it again, and starts fighting back while in another part of the building, the X-Men attack. Phillip runs off looking for Jenny and teams up with Alex, who's looking for Maddie. Maddie has gone to the nursery, where she finds the kidnapped baby, who she learns was the only natural mutant birth in the country in a long time. Usually they're grown in a lab from mutant DNA, and Maddie feels a strange connection to the body growing tubes. The Genegineer shows up and tries to kill her, but Alex and Phillip stop him and demand to be taken to Jenny. It's too late, though, as she's been turned into a mutate. The X-Men discuss just toppling the entire nation, but Phillip asks for a chance to rebuild the government, starting by getting the word out locally and overseas about how mutants are treated here. The X-Men agree, but tell him that if he fails, they'll be back to take down the country. Alex blows up the entire Genoshan citadel as a threat to everyone remaining on the island, and Maddie kisses him before the X-Men walk through a portal back to their homebase.
There's not a whole lot left to say, because while this is an incredibly powerful story, it's not a very subtle one, and everything is kinda right there on the page. It's maybe Claremont's most chilling story. One of the shortcomings of the mutant metaphor is how few mutants there are, which is why introducing a whole nation of large scale oppression is so effective at getting those themes across. The random mutants in the background as slaves, the father who got shot in the opening pages, and poor Jenny, who only wanted to help people, make the suffering feel very real. I said this before, but it was really important for this book to do commentary on South Africa. Most of Claremont mutant metaphor stuff has been allegories for gay and/or Jewish people, but it's really important for the metaphor to be available to every marginalized group. It never works one-to-one, and it doesn't map onto racial politics quite as well as it does queer politics, but it's there and it's important. This was a great story for Maddie, who's hardcore embracing her new demon friends, and Anna, who hasn't gotten much focus for a while and got some really interesting stuff with Carol in her brain. One of the problems with this arc is that it takes so long before the X-Men actually go back to Genosha. In universe, it's not really that long, the book is just about to get really really busy, and they also have to wait till the big three mutant books are all available for the crossover, X-Tinction Agenda. It just makes the X-Men come across kinda negligent, which is unfortunate. Nowadays they would immediately release a followup miniseries about how Genosha changes, but that's just not an option when you have a handful of X-books and a crazy number of plots going on. That doesn't take away from this story in a vacuum, though, which is really good.

Random question…what DID a baby T-Rex look like and how did it grow into the iconic beasts?
Also in a world where dinosaur co exist with humanity via Jurassic Park. Though I would go with Dinotopia domestication
Me: God why did you wipeout the dinosaurs?
God: So your ancestors can grow! [Mammals were around in a rat like stages with dinosaurs. They hide underground during the meteor shower…just like our bunkers ideas for a nuclear fallout]
Me: Why you didn’t you let the T-Rex have any descendants?
G: You want the descendants of “Tyrannical Kings” roaming the earth?
M: At least those would have nice teeth..why do why call those creatures T-Rexes?
Wait I heard dinosaurs had feathers…did baby t rexes look as fugly as baby eagles?
Autistic joke…do you think a setting like Jurassic Park that…15% of people part of the park crew be Autistic? They are mainly higher up that maintain the systems and make sure the dinosaurs are properly cared for (and might feed some assholes to them as snacks)
Also for a dinosaurs zoo, i remember seeing that some chuck e cheese having special hours for autistic kids. Now I was fine going there as a kid, but low functioning yeah I can see. But I can see that type of stuff where there are special days and hours for autistic kids to visit dinosaurs
Sorry…I am told there are millions of autistic people in the world…yet I still feels lonely…or maybe media haven’t shown that but two autistic boys in a room= Abel vs Cain, the Autistic remix
Progressive writers: We love autistic people!
Me: Can you give them a fucking pet dinosaur, make them be a historian, mecha pilot or something?
PW: Nah we just going to use the buzzfeed surface understanding of the disorder
Me: AAAAAH! THE FUCKING 2010’S POWER RANGER MOVIE GOT IT RIGHT WITH THE BLUE RANGER!
Also autistic people are products of their environment…because I made learn really quick to be careful around autistic women online(sorry not all, but why so many drink the feminist kool aid?)
Random question…what DID a baby T-Rex look like and how did it grow into the iconic beasts? Also in a world where dinosaur co exist with humanity via Jurassic Park. Though I would go with Dinotopia domestication.
Probably like smaller versions of the big ones, like chicks and chickens.
And I'd want that too, pet dino would be cool but expensive.
lol on the conversation, and there's a a lot of speculation on the feather thing, never going to be a 100% consensus for it because that's just how science works wit things like that.
Autistic joke…do you think a setting like Jurassic Park that…15% of people part of the park crew be Autistic? They are mainly higher up that maintain the systems and make sure the dinosaurs are properly cared for (and might feed some assholes to them as snacks)
Don't know about the first bit, but that bit at the end would have been awesome when I worked at Disney World.
Also for a dinosaurs zoo, i remember seeing that some chuck e cheese having special hours for autistic kids. Now I was fine going there as a kid, but low functioning yeah I can see. But I can see that type of stuff where there are special days and hours for autistic kids to visit dinosaurs
don't think that would be something that they could accomplish with live animals, animatronics you can shut down and what not at need, not so much with live animals
Sorry…I am told there are millions of autistic people in the world…yet I still feels lonely…or maybe media haven’t shown that but two autistic boys in a room= Abel vs Cain, the Autistic remix
There are, thing with media is they tend to go hard with things like that to the point where they generate characters that are walking stereotypes, which then generates tons of complaints.
Honestly it's just easier to contend with people complaining about lack of representation than it is to deal with people that are angry about bad representation.
At least when you leave them out you can use the excuse of 'I don't feel it would be right of me to include X in my media because I'm not part of X and wouldn't be able to give authentic representation' and some of the perpetually angry will accept that.
Progressive writers: We love autistic people! Me: Can you give them a fucking pet dinosaur, make them be a historian, mecha pilot or something? PW: Nah we just going to use the buzzfeed surface understanding of the disorder Me: AAAAAH! THE FUCKING 2010’S POWER RANGER MOVIE GOT IT RIGHT WITH THE BLUE RANGER!
Like I said.
Also autistic people are products of their environment…because I made learn really quick to be careful around autistic women online(sorry not all, but why so many drink the feminist kool aid?)
my guess would be large amounts of lies and manipulation are going to get a good deal of the blame for that one.
