#wip: the vespertine

summary

Aselhi is one orphan among many on the streets of Kestramore, eking out a living as a servant in a minor household. Unlike other orphans, they're one of the vespertine, an alien people who ate through the cosmic Weft separating Moia from the other realms and setting the Causeways alight.

They also have a secret: they have the ability to whisper into the crushed velvet night and bring the power of the Causeways to their fingertips. This secret is known by few, and one they refuse to use, as it would mark them as a sage - and thus forcibly separated from society into their own class.

This changes all at once, where Aselhi saves the life of Josric, finding out that he has the same power. They promise to teach him, but when they uncover that he's a prince of Lindor, they flee. In the meantime, the sun sets on Kestramore, and everything changes as most of Josric's family is eradicated by traitors within hours.

With nowhere else to turn, Jos turns to Aselhi. Feeling somewhat responsible for the younger boy, they join his escape from Kestramore. With sagekeepers and rebel nobility on their heels, they find themselves wandering the mountains in the west, called by the Causeways to a valley hidden deep within...

I don't know when I'll start on that, since I already have both my arms elbow-deep in Urathla's worldbuilding right now, and I want to make sure I start fresh.

Vazya's face was ashen as they stared at Alessa. She stared right back, her head full of cotton at what had just happened. They raced to the narrow balcony, leaving Alessa in the senator's study, and peered over the balustrade, silhouette cradled by the archway. "Look there!" Someone from below cried. Her belly dropped, stone-heavy and sick. "Murderer!"

Tears blurred their vision as they marched towards the main road, rain pattering on their face and making their too-sensitive horns tingle uncomfortably. Behind them, they could hear Jos’s frantic scuttling to catch up.

dust - amid wisteria

And suddenly a yawning pit in [Arêllan's] stomach, making them feel queasy. They drop the seashell to the ground, dusting their hands of sand. "I'll, um. I’ll wash up first."

itch - unto summer kings

Before he fully knew what he was doing, Arthur spun around on one foot and sprinted back towards the forest, only to be stopped by a harsh ironclad hand. He itched to rip free.

Aria (right) and Evie (left)!! everything here is pretty much accurate except Evie's hair, which is dyed dark green at the roots and slowly fades into black. Evie's just so happy that Aria likes her and oh my heart hurts

Laurie (left) and Amara (right)! wow is that two women in love who constantly used to compete for social status?

Charlotte (left) and Ella (right)! btw Amara and Ella are twins so that's why they have the same color palette. the hair is natural, unlike Aria's. this pic was taken the day Ella was crowned.

Julian (left) and Henry (right). this is in their 80s prequel era, specifically the moment that Julian essentially threw what he was doing to the side and kissed Henry. I will say that Julian's scar is a little farther from sight and a little less conspicuous. aaaa they're so cute <3

Taj (left) and Itsuki (right). this is their kiss right after Taj rescues Itsuki from Akahana, hence the blood and fresh scars on Itsuki and the scratches on Taj. might I mention that Itsuki is being carried bridal style?

Peaches and Motor Oil - actually an original piece.

"Well." The cat's eyes gleamed. "I'm doing no more than this boy did, after all. You come to the crossroads, and you learn something, and what you take away and where you go with that is up to you. But you were kind once, when I was caught in the rain, and kind ever since. So take yourself along, kitten, and thank the boy for telling you what he knows."

5. hartley lisa ray - a short piece about Hartley and Lisa looking to steal something from a PalmerTech event. It's honestly mostly done, I just need to smooth out the scene breaks...!

22. Vespertine - another original one. It's... hmh. I guess it's the story of a bad fairy in a city of superheroes. :)

28. Boots - I can't find this one anymore, but from what I recall it was Len setting restrictions on Hartley beating the crap out of someone - the rule was basically "go ahead, two minutes, boots and not gloves."

(It was justified, promise.)

29. Girls - a third original. :) A story about a couple of people looking for those who get forgotten. It's weird and winding and I don't like the pacing.
