wip intro: doom metal love story

The two stare at each other, Calvin watching Cole with his hands on his hips, finally caught up to the fort sheriff who'd been dogging him for months and he was everything he'd thought he'd be. Admiring him, until his knees give out and he slumps. Everything he'd thought he'd be even after he slumps. Calvin catches him, mindful of where his hands grip, almost loving. Cole coughs and is unable to steady himself. His arms dangle. His head rests upon his nemesis's shoulder. He's limp. He may as well be dead already. "Couldn't'a asked for better," Calvin says, quiet, like this is just for the four of them, as if this were something for the two to die proud of. "You're gonna live forever, in a way. Both of ya. Don't that sound nice?"

Synopsis

U.S. Army Cavalry First Sergeant Cole Sullivan has had more than enough time to count the mistakes he's made in the last year. At the end of his career, the decorated Civil War veteran has been sent to one of the last forts still standing across the Mississippi River. His best friend, Surgeon Erik Hofer, has pulled every string he could reach to be here with him. Stuck with a leg that won't heal and a head injury that altered his personality, Sullivan gets through each day by relying on Hofer, and by neither complaining nor thinking about the past. Three recruits have gone missing since he arrived in the spring, and he has no notion of where they might have gone, or why they might have deserted.

Then his former lover, an outlaw and gambler who goes by the name Arthur Royston, appears at the fort in a desperate state. Royston is the reason Sullivan lives in a broken body--he pushed him off a moving train nearly a year ago. He claims he had a reason, that what would have happened if he hadn't is worse than their current situation, and that he's here to help Sullivan find his recruits.

Sullivan has no reason to believe him. What Sullivan wants to do is leave him in the fort stockade to rot. But Sullivan has a horrible feeling this has happened before, and he refuses to allow it to happen again.

Alternating timelines between an isolated frontier fort and the ailing Kansas riverfront town where everything started, Doom Metal Love Story is an existential horror novel about love, pain, and time loops.

It has a absurdly detailed magic system, complicated world building, and It's in planning stage, and over 10,000 words of plot have been completed as well as the prologue. it is in the process of being written. You don't hesitate in volunteering to help hunt down his killer-- not if it meant protecting your family and avenging his death. The only problem? She absolutely hates the Vipers. Will you be able to come to some sort of middle ground?

Special Aspects: Enemies-to-Lovers, but will you be able even to blame her for her hatred in the end?

Damien Frost ✶ He/Him ✶ 29 ✶

A recently promoted detective within the RPD. A man that's been assigned the case, either out of pity or malevolence, you aren't quite sure, but Detective Frost isn't one to give up, even when all the odds seem to be stacked against him. In fact, he seems to have a penchant to appear wherever you are, and he doesn't seem to mind at all that he's working alongside criminals. He simply wants to get the crime solved. Is it only because he wishes to prove himself? Or is it something more?

Special Aspects: Law Enforcement Officer with a Gangster... Need I say more?

Stephen/Stephanie Matthews ✶ He/Him or She/Her ✶ 27 ✶

Stephen/Stephanie, or simply Stevie, is someone you know you can count on no matter what. They'd as easily offer you their last beer as they would knife someone in the gut to protect you. Your best friend since you joined the Vipers, being the one that had trained you after your initiation, it's no surprise that they join you on the hunt for the killer.

Gabriel/Gabriella DeLuca ✶ He/Him or She/Her ✶ 28 ✶

The other half of your motley crew within the Vipers. Gabby is known for a multitude of things within the Northside, being a jack of all trades when it comes to their skills, but their true trademark is the sea of broken hearts they've left in their wake. With a disarming smile and devil-may-care attitude, it isn't hard to understand how someone could be pulled into their axis. It's just escaping it unscathed that's the challenge.

Special Aspects: Have the option to be friends with benefits, or simply friends, and see how that could influence the possible romance to come.

Leon/Lena Prince ✶ He/Him or She/Her ✶ 28 ✶

The one person you wouldn't wish to run into within Riverwood-- having completely destroyed your relationship with them; possibly breaking their heart in the process. You haven't heard much about them since you left the Southside, but learning about them taking over the rival gang of the Vipers? Your week just couldn't get any better, could it?

Special Aspects: Exes-to-Rivals-to-Friends-to-Lovers (once more). Will you be able to build back the trust you lost?

heyyy, how yall doin… i’ve been working on something that im excited about and excited to share when im done :) it’s going to be another 2 part mini series, i plan on finishing both parts at once but posting them separately, maybe a week apart at the most. we’re looking at probably around 12k-15k for both parts together. despite what you read below, this will be a very dark joel!! i will be sure to tag both parts boldly and appropriately.

here’s a hefty snippet of our intro to this joel:

“You need a ride, sweetheart?” A man asks in a gravelly voice, and you can still hardly make out what he looks like. Based on the southern accent you pick up on, he doesn’t sound like he’s from around here.

“N-no, thank you. I’m okay,” you respond shakily, taking a nervous step back from the stranger and his rusted pickup.

“You sure? Looked like you were cryin’ over here, like you might be lost or somethin’.”

“‘M not lost, I know where I’m going.”

“Oh yeah? Where’s that?”

Shit.

You take a guess.

“Um… the motel down the road,” you reply, tilting your head in the direction you had been walking in.

“There ain’t a motel down there, sweetheart. Ain’t nothin’ in either direction for miles, ‘s all just farmland out here. Reckon you’ve already figured that out, though.”

You pause, unsure of what your next move should be. He knows you’re lying, knows you’re alone with no fucking idea where you are or where you’re going. You could run, but even that shitty truck of his could catch up to you in a matter of seconds. You take another step back, swiveling your head around to look up and down the road as you try to figure your best way out of this.

“Just lemme give you a ride somewhere, darlin’. There’s a diner just off the exit, ‘bout twenty miles up ahead. Could take you that far, at least, get you somethin’ to eat” he offers. A warm meal does sound pretty good right now, and you suppose you aren’t exactly in a position to refuse his help.

You think on it for a second. “What’s it called? The diner.”

The stranger huffs. “Moody’s.”

“What do they have?” you challenge.

“It’s a fuckin’ diner off the side of the freeway, darlin’. They got greasy food and black coffee, ‘s about all you need.”

You don’t say anything.

Then, after a beat—“They got some kinda sloppy mess they call the Thunder Burger. ‘S got onion rings and shit on it. Ain’t half bad.”

You have to admit, he’s passing your pop quiz with flying colors. His answers have been too quick, too specific for him to be lying to you. There’s a pretty solid chance this diner does exist, and that he’s been there before. The man hasn’t said anything that’s indicated he wants anything more to do with you than to offer you a ride and some dinner. He’s probably just somebody’s harmless grandfather, anyway, judging by his motheaten flannel and gray-stricken beard you can see now that you’ve approached his truck a few paces closer.

“Okay,” you concede, your stomach growling loudly as the man leans over the bench seat to pop open the passenger side door for you. You shrug off your backpack and climb into the cabin, clicking your seatbelt into place as you situate yourself on the cracked leather seat.

Andy didn’t mean to become a pirate captain, but after killing the captain of her ship, she finds herself thrust into the role. Years after the incident, she is fierce and feared and recovering from a tropical fever that wiped out half her crew. Just as they’re about to dock, they find an injured siren left behind by her choir. Andy, drawn to her, pulls her onto the ship and decides to keep her there until she recovers. But with the Navy hunting for both pirates and sirens, Andy has just made her ship an even bigger target for an iniquitous captain looking for revenge.

On a Few Terms and Conditions is a WIP still very much in its infancy. The summary thus far:

Youngest child of a prominent, political family, Miles was once hailed a boy genius. Valedictorian of his private high school, full ride to study politics in D.C., promising career ahead of him. But by junior year of college he has a major issue: he’s on academic probation. To keep it a secret from his parents and the public eye, he has to secretly find a tutor to get caught up over the summer in order to graduate on time. The solution: Liam, the youngest of another political family who may or may not hate Miles. Throw in some political drama, Miles’ bad habits catching up to him, a little romance, and they’re all in for an interesting summer.

Angel is a project I've been working and re-working over and over again. I'm very, very passionate about it, but the plot is all over the place. There are a few WIP posts up on Tumblr.

Angel is the youngest member of boy group, NXT. For four years, he's followed every expectation his company has set for him. Diets, dating bans, media training. But after a string of bad publicity and a drinking habit he can't shake, he's gotten a new reputation of being a rebellious bad boy. While NXT is on a summer break, he's told to shape up and get ready for a side solo career that's been perfectly packaged for him. At first, it looks like everything might be okay despite the mounting pressure. And then he meets an indie artist, Eisle. Eisle grows his hair long, paints his nails, kisses boys, and doesn't listen to anyone. And it's all very confusing for Angel who's just trying to keep up with the image his company made for him when he was 15.

The Past (2000)

The narrator wakes up in his own grave as a Newly Returned Person. As is protocol with NRPs, he's expected to continue the life of The One Before: keep his name, continue his job, and live with his wife, Fransisca. However, both the narrator and Fransisca know that he is not The One Before. When the narrator meets another rogue NRP named Van, he realizes that there's more to his new life than just pretending to be a dead man.

The Present (2001)

Van goes missing. The narrator searches for him, terrified of losing the man who has allowed him to become himself. He and Fransisca deal with his grief and guilt while searching for Van, and make an unexpected ally along the way.

Literal Logline

In a thinly-veiled trans allegory, a man learns how to love after undeath.

Inspirations

Characters

The narrator has no name that belongs to him. He hasn't quite gotten used to being alive yet, but he's getting better at it.

The One Before is the person the narrator is supposed to be. He is dead, and will stay that way.

Fransisca is the wife of The One Before. She's strangely understanding of the narrator's plight and comforts him through his grief.

Van is the first NRP the narrator meets that refuses to pretend to be a dead person. The narrator falls in love with him for that.

Setting

A world where the dead have begun to come back. Some people believe this is the real Y2K; others believe God has begun rejecting souls. Whatever the cause, NRPs are cropping up around the world. A particular hotspot is New York City.

In early 2000s New York City, the narrator's job at a shitty motel and fight to find Van brings him to some unsavory places with equally unsavory people.

Excerpt

She looked at you with pain, but no anger. You were wearing her dead husband’s face like a poor Halloween costume. If she were angry, you would understand. But she looked as if she’d been stabbed. A deep pain you didn’t know yet. You’d never known loss before, because you were the loss.

“I’m not him.” You wanted a cigarette. You wanted to run away. You wanted to hide in the cabinets. There were so many things you wanted in that moment, and you could have none of them.

i've been around here sporadically since 2018 and always tend to come home; i like prompts and ask games and tags and fun things. i write love stories in sci-fi and fantasy settings, and i'm working towards traditional publishing always. currently i'm querying my adult fantasy standalone, The Great Glavenisean Theater (The Night Circus x House of Leaves). i enjoy writing nsfw content, lush scene setting, and detailed emotional headspaces.

(bi4bi otp). a social-climber uses subterfuge, blackmail, and murder to achieve his ambitions, and the court eccentric that he's in love with gets weirder and weirder when a new discovery is brought back by an exploration team.

star white 🌟 {wip intro} {general tag} romantic space fantasy, standalone. (gay otp) one man searches for the love of his life after he's been abducted by sentient dark matter, and spends millions of years travelling through space with a semi-organic AI ship.

Holy shit making a shitty/low effort comic sans PowerPoint was actually super helpful for sparking my creativity again, highly recommend if you wanna get excited about your writing again. Definitely will be making more for my other wips in the future!

How long have you had your writing Tumblr/Writeblr?

Since November 2022

What led you to create it?

After having a beyond shitty 2020-2021 and pulling away from social media in general, a friend suggested I give tumblr a shot. I was also desperately looking for beta readers for Sunset and wanted to get involved in a writer community.

What’s your favorite thing about the Writeblr community?

The people! Getting to connect with writers whose brains work like mine!! And getting to rotate their ocs in my head! I've made some incredible friendships through writeblr that I wouldn't trade for anything.

What’s one thing you’d like your mutuals to know about you?

I am as obsessed about Sunset as I seem (possibly more--let's not get into it) but I also love listening to people talk about the things they're obsessed with so I'm always up to exchange some excitement about our respective projects. Also, I'm hella dyslexic so if we chat, be warned you may get some word salad from me sometimes.

Is there anything you’d like to see more of on your dash?

I love seeing little quotes or snippets of info about OCs that help me become obsessed with them. And out of context lines/dialogue! Those are always a delight.

What tips/advice do you have for someone who made a Writeblr today?

Just put yourself out there! It took me a long time to be comfortable posting anything at all but that's the only way people can get a sense of your stories. Also, don't be scared to reach out to other writeblrs through asks and dms. We're a shy breed but once you corner us into a conversations, you've unleashed a flood of excitement.

WIP it Good

Which Works-in-Progress (WIPs) or writing projects are you noodling about, lately?

Sunset is my main project that I'm writing with my partner @touloserlautrec. It's a behemoth 2,000+ pages of converging plotlines and slow burn romance and intrigue and monster hunting. It's everything I love in a story wrapped up into one. Volume 1 (Sunrise) is out, Volume 2 (High Noon) is releasing weekly, and Volume 3 (Sunset) is probably 75% drafted. (Links in my intro if this somehow reaches someone who isn't already following me.) I've also been poking at a fluff side project to blow off steam for the first time in forever. It's a fluffy romance urban/fantasy with fae and a gay strip club. Just 'cause. I don't know that I'll ever post what I'm writing of this, but who knows?

How long have you been working on them?

Sunset for about 17 years, but seriously writing it for the past 8 years. Fluff Side Project? A month?

Do you remember what inspired them/what got you started?

I ran an in-person RPG back in college that led Tou and I to create the world of Sunset and the initial core cast (Reeve, Alex, Hannah, Gareth, Misha, Adler) and then it all spiraled out from there. Fluff Side Project comes from some characters we made just playing around in a world we created as a no-stress play zone. The problems are smaller. The stakes are nothing like the high tension world of Sunset. It's fun. It's gay as hell. It's fluffy. And July is my least favorite month so I decided, hey, why not write it down while I've got writer's block for Sunset?

How much time, in your best estimation, do you spend thinking about them?

Sunset: 28 hours a day. Fluff: I squeeze in 3 or 4 hours in the evening.

When someone asks the dreaded, “What do you write about,” question, what do you usually say?

I struggle to answer this question and it depends on who is asking. If it's on tumblr? I say I write science-fantasy slow build action with horror elements and lots of intrigue. IRL? I deflect.

What do you want to say (if it’s different from what you do say)?

I write about ruining Alex and Reeve's life.

There. Are. Too. Many. My favorite babies from my head are Reeve, Penn, Marek, and Anise.

Who’s the most unhinged?

Hannah is my most unhinged trash-panda gremlin. My nudist sniper. Ace Queen. Never shave, never surrender.

Who comes the most naturally for you to write?

Reeve. And yes, that does worry me. (And my therapist.)

Do you ever cringe at them?

The #drag Reeve tag is a thing for a reason. (But really, I love him dearly and he doesn't truly deserve to be dragged as much as he is imo. It's a good bit tho)

How much control do you feel you have over your characters?

I can wrangle when I need to but they do feel like independent little critters in my head. Writing for me tends to be me transcribing the movie I'm watching in my head while muttering, "OHMYGOD Hannah are you seriously going to say that? What is wrong with you?" Or "Reeve. Reeve. REEVE NO."

Do you enjoy people asking questions about your characters?

OMFG YES. Please give me any excuse to talk about these guys.

On Writeblr Engagement

What makes you want to follow another Writeblr account?

If I jive with their WIP concepts or they have interesting OCs. Fantasy or sci-fi elements. Queerness. I'm more likely to follow if their intro has something about wanting to connect writers who are looking to hype each other up because that is what I am also looking for.

What makes you decide against following?

If their blog is full of hateful stuff or just super negative.

Do you interact with non-mutuals often?

Sure! I'm new enough to Tumblr that the lore of mutuals and non-mutuals hasn't rooted in my brain enough for me to super know which is which in my feed except for my small core group of moots I talk to regularly. So I interact with whatever posts catch my attention, moot or not.

Do your mutuals’ characters occupy space in your noodle?

OHMYGODYES. There is a little mobile of characters and animals (a fish and some frogs) that dangles over my little brain threatening to distract me at all times.

(fanfic) silly things in my 100k+ word wip that i really fucking love

i talk about this fic out of context a lot to avoid spoilers since it's not posted anywhere yet but... i really wanted to share a couple of things that might be a little too in context. anyways! lol-- the list is under the cut. proceed with caution if you plan on reading it when it's done :3

p.s. it's a sambastian fic but has a ton of other fun stuff. there's somethin' for everyone in there. (if you care at all, here's an intro to it.)

as annoying as it is to write, reoccurring items/motifs are so fun. like yes, i can and will be referencing a joke from ten chapters ago. and yes, that character sebastian knew? yeah, well, haley knew her too because they all grew up together and went to the same high school. it's just fun and a way i world build in a space that's already pretty developed.

speaking of the motifs, my favorite has to do with touch; the boundary between something explicitly platonic and romantic. pretty much every character toes the line but there are certain things, like hand holding, that just really take the cake for me. see it's not just hand holding. it's guiding. to go from holding a wrist to a few fingers to a palm and to then intertwine. it's fuckin' fantastic. even more so because it's such a small detail you can miss.

haley and vincent are two of my favorite characters to write. they have very specific voices and mannerisms and trying to keep it consistent and in character is such a fun challenge.

on that note, haley and sebastian are my favorite dynamic to write (other than sambastian obviously lol, the fic is theirs after all). they're both catty and their love-hate relationship is my favorite thing ever. i recently wrote a part where haley comes to him for advice and half the conversation they're arguing/dragging each other for absolutely no reason. and what makes it even funnier is they continue the conversation all the while this is occurring.

sam is full of shitty jokes and even though i only throw them in there a handful of times, i adore how cheesy he is. he just thinks he's so funny and, despite everyone's grumbling, they can't help but agree.

robin and sebastian's relationship is also fantastic. a lot of what i wrote with them is early on and needs to be heavily revised, but generally speaking, they're both flawed characters who fucked up their relationship with each other and being able to explore that in a healthy way makes me cry. it's just so good. everyone needs a robin.

abby is the most omniscient character in the whole story because she's not only friends with sam and sebastian (getting both sides of their stories) but also with haley (the town gossiper). the way the two girls kinda orbit everyone else while having their own shit going on is just a blast to write. they don't exist just to fuel the plot, they're their own characters. but also, watching them lose patience and start forcing their friends together like barbies while playing house is REALLY fucking amusing SDFUIHSDFH

internal battles are just SO juicy. most of sebastian's issues are internal and self inflicted. he's just in his head too much and does dumbass shit to try and cope with whatever he's feeling (that he doesn't want to, even if it isn't inherently bad) at any given moment. the main plot and catalyst for the story's problems is literally him not wanting to accept that having feelings for people is okay!!! he's so stupid!!! i love him!!! (he's also me sometimes... i fear...)

i'm not typically a massive fan of ocs in written fan fiction (i for some reason eat art/comics up though???) but i cannot help myself by throwing in random and irrelevant characters. there are two market-esque things in winter year 1 and all the vendors the characters talk to have names and personalities. all of them were made up on the spot and will (likely) never reappear, but i don't care. they add depth to something otherwise limited to a handful of canon characters. i haven't tried out any expansion mods for sdv but i totally get why people like them so much and write those new npcs into fics. the options increase like... sevenfold XD

speaking of ocs, i basically make irrelevant canon npcs into ocs in this fic. welwick the fortune teller? i made them non-binary and they genuinely have thousands of words dedicated to them and are referenced multiple times throughout the entire fic.

SPEAKING OF QUEER FOLKS-- anyone i add is some flavor of queer. i don't give a single fuck. there's an nblm relationship and there's a trans masc character and there will be many more random inclusions because i said so.

super minor detail that i technically haven't had the opportunity to add yet but background ships? characters who literally don't have audible interaction? i'll be writing that in. haven't decided who's getting blasted with the miku-beam-of-homosexual-pairing yet but i'm leaning toward harvey and elliot. and both of them have their own lines in the fic already. so they're real... (and i love them...)

sebastian opening up as the fic progresses, letting people into his life, letting people love him unconditionally... A U G H-- it's fucking fanTASTIC bro. i already have an idea of the exact way i'm going to end the fic and it has to do with this exact concept and the way it's physically represented in his collection of 'cherished items'. more than just abby and your mama care about you now my love =((( /pos

okay. i think i'm good. i can seriously go on forever just like with my headcanons. i just love writing so much. i LOVE IT SO MUCH-- also, before i go, take a shot every time i said something was fun to do. you'll be drunk as hell by the time you get back down here, trust XDD
