The case of the infinitive

When in Old English, an infinitive was used with to, its form changed: - Iċ sċeal etan ('I shall eat') - Iċ begann tō etenne ('I began to eat')

This was its dative case. Yes, even infinitives had case back then!

Frisian still does this: - Ik sil ite - Ik begûn te iten

On my Facebook page, a kind follower told me that the Low Saxon dialect of the Dutch town of Winterswijk has preserved the inflected infinitive after te as well: - zeuken ('to look for') vs. Wat heste daor te zeukene? (What are you looking for there?) - doon ('to do') vs. Dat hoof i-j neet te doone. (You don't have to do that.) - zeggen ('to say') vs. Daor is völle vöör te zeggene. (There's a lot to be said for that.) - eaten ('to eat') vs. Dat grei is jao neet te eatene. (That stuff isn't edible.)

There probably are many more Low Saxon dialects where a similar situation can be found. I've now updated the graphic.
