Since when has Figure Skating become "Jumping competition"....???
*Before you read please make sure you know that I don’t have anything to offend Nathan Chen nor Alina Zagitova. They are wonderful, but the problem here is about those people who said that the artistry is not important in Figure Skating*
*If you find any mistake in my writing, please don’t mind those because English is not my first language*
Since when has Figure Skating become "Jumping competition"....?
“It’s much more than a sport, it’s an art, it’s a way of life, it’s a dream, it’s a passion, it’s a feeling that no one can describe.”
We all know that Figure Skating (FS) is a popular sport around the world because of its unique beauty and the challenges in performance. Winter Olympic 2018, the American athlete, Nathan Chen attempted 6 quads successfully in his free skate program. I know that amazing but did anyone notice that other than those quad jumps, he didn’t really show much about the artistry in FS
Nevertheless, some people didn’t think that way. In their opinion, techniques and jumps are the two things that matter in FS, and the artistry isn’t important anymore.
I want to make it clear for those people who said that FS doesn't need the artistry or say it isn’t important.... How lame they are....
I'm wondering what they were even watching?
All in their head were just about quad, axel, salchow, lutz jumps???
What about the musics, the feelings, the elegant movements, the expressions in figure skating?
And what did people say? Jumping make the figure skating become more excited to watch?! The excitement in competition?! Okay then but not keep jumping and jumping and jumping during the entire program. Didn't they feel boring?!
Even though jumps are going to give them high technical scores, but please... figure skating is not all about jumping... That doesn't impress at all...
In the past, FS tended to be more artistic than now. Since all skaters have been trying to attemp more difficult elements and moves which make FS become harder in competing than ever and focus more and more on the jump techniques especially quad for now. Of course that every sport evolves from time to time; however, shouldn’t we get rid of the real beauty in it?
Although now we have the Ice Dancing as a more artistic sport, that doesn’t mean that we should get rid of the art in FS.
In my opinion, good figure skaters make sure that their techniques and the artistic elements are equal! They flow with the music, with their passions in the performances. How grateful it is! Looking at the spirit inside their performances also, not only the techniques outside and you will see. Go watch Yuzuru Hanyu and then make a SERIOUS COMPARISON to Nathan!!!
(And I think some people know why Yuzuru is that famous! I’m sure that’s not a really compatible comparison because Yuzuru probably has more experiences than Nathan, but at least you’ll see my point :) )
To be honest, even the performance of the female FS gold medalist - Alina Zagitova didn’t give me much feeling but those accurate jumps in the second half of her free skate. On the other hand, Evgenia Medvedeva won the silver medal, but she did so great and she brought all the passions, the spirits into her performance even though she didn't jump as great as Zagitova. (This is just my personal view!)
Thus, if people still look forward to seeing more jumps and consider that the artistry is nothing important in FS, why don't we just simply remove the music, change the sport name to "Jumping On Ice" so then those people can go watch and enjoy their "LAME excitement in competition”.
Thank You!
P/s: I like Nathan because he’s such a potential skater, and I believe that he can be much greater in the future. (Maybe he needs a better coach who can help him go on the right path and not giving him the frustrated glances or an extremely disappointed face when he did a bad performance....)
