Tips for dealing with below 0°F temperatures, for anyone who's not used to it and is now having to deal with it in this winter storm:
Tuck your shirt into your pants to prevent the cold from sneaking in
Put on a sweater or a hoodie over that, and then also wear a coat over that
Put on a beanie and then pull your hood up over that (BOTH hoods if you're wearing a hoodie instead of a sweater)
Wear a scarf underneath your coat hood. You want it to be kept as close to you as possible, and hopefully high enough that you can tuck your nose into it while walking outside
Wear solid pants like jeans, and put on tights, leggings, or (if you actually have any) long underwear underneath
Wear two pairs of socks—at least one of which is long socks—and tuck your leggings into those
Wear boots or some other thick shoe with good traction if you have any
GLOVES. Wear two pairs if you need to. I only have one pair and now my hands are my only weak point 😭
Try not to stay outside for too long if you can help it, frostbite and hypothermia are painful and very dangerous. When you're inside, make sure you're eating plenty of food and drinking plenty of water. Your body needs energy and hydration to fight off the cold. Stay safe out there everyone

There’s a nasty winter storm that’s going to hit most of the central regions of the US tomorrow (21 December 2022), especially tomorrow night. Please check your local forecasts if you live anywhere east of the rocky mountains, even down as far south as Texas. In some areas of the Plains region, windchill is likely to be -50F to -70F. That is so cold that you will develop frostbite in minutes. You will lose extremities without protection if you are exposed to windchill that cold. -70F is “surface of Mars” cold.
My part of the US is going to be below freezing all next week. This is normal for some. Not so normal for others.
If your area is likely to be impacted by the storm, please prepare now. The most important thing is staying warm and staying inside until things warm up outside. Specific tips I can offer, as somebody who regularly deals with cold winters are:
Put blankets over windows and doors. This will help your house retain heat.
Stay well-fed. Buy food now. You will get hungry faster because your body will burn calories to stay warm.
Stay hydrated. If your lips are chapped youre probably dehydrated.
Stay dry. Remove wet clothing as soon as possible. It is better to be naked than wet when it is cold.
If it is going to get below freezing for more than an hour or two, run your water at a trickle or drip to prevent your pipes from bursting. The colder it gets the faster your pipes will freeze.
Here’s the weather forecast for this storm:

It's dropped 6 degrees in the last 30 minutes. This is going to suck so, so hard. I'm worried about the unhoused people in my city. This is the kind of weather that kills people.

-A lot of places in the path of the storm don’t have the right infrastructure to deal with it. If that’s the case, you’ll want to be extra careful.
-Use lots of blankets, block or at least stay away from windows (especially large ones!), and wear layers! If you have storm shutters, closing those might help.
-An oven can be used as a heater if you need; just turn it on and crack the door a bit.
-Keep candles on hand. If you lose power, they’ll provide a small amount of light and warmth. Just make sure to practice basic fire safety - you do not want your house burning down in this kind of weather.
-If you’re using space heaters, remember to keep them away from furniture, fabric, and basically anything remotely flammable, and don’t leave them unattended. Most are okay on carpet, but keep an eye on them.
-Keep your faucets running slightly (you can collect the water in a bucket) so your pipes don’t freeze and burst.
-Wearing a mask can help keep your face warm and covered!
-Stay inside whenever possible. If you have dogs or other pets that need to go outside to pee, set out a pad or a pile or newspapers inside if possible so they can stay in as well. If you do have to go outside, wear lots of layers! If it’s snowing, wear waterproof clothes (and shoes) as your outermost layers if possible.
-Check your carbon monoxide detectors! Running things like furnaces full-blast all the time, especially when snow may be covering exhaust areas, might lead to CO buildup, which will kill you.
-Drinking alcohol will make you feel warm, but it actually makes you lose body heat faster. Avoid it.
-Know the signs of hypothermia!
It's about to hit us here in Oklahoma and the rest of the southern states that are not used to this level of cold.
Please take this seriously if you live somewhere this is going to impact significantly.
I just sincerely hope texas' power grid doesn't fail them again.
but at least a small blessing is that this isn't bringing much precipitation with it and the worst of it will be the wind.
Anyway. Stay inside, wear layers, and bundle up. Get your cold weather shit prepped now if you haven't yet.

Oh Golly. The high temp today is 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Right now it is 0°F, but the feels like is -20°F. I feels extremely bad for any homeless people. You could get frostbite so quickly. I hope they are the winter sanctuary. I am absolutely freezing. So is my cat, and we have the heat on 75°F

Vine maple
The trees in the backyard all covered in ice.
I was really trying to capture the light through the ice on everything, but I was just using my phone so some were more successful than others.

SPACE HEATER WARNING
As this cold front is moving in I wanna remind everyone of some space heater safety tips!
1: ALWAYS plug them into a wall outlet, never ever into an extension cord or surge protector! It will melt!!!!
2: Keep clothes, curtains, bedsheets, and any other flammable materials away from the heater, especially the coils!
3: Never leave your space heater on over night!! My rule is that the space heater cannot be turned on if I’m not in the room, or I’m not conscious.
Please reblog this (and feel free to add other safety tips) to help keep some people safe!

#garry's mod#gmod#source engine#half life 2#deathmatch#remaster#hearted#i covered this map 2 years ago (to the day) in 2022! but it's so good that i wanted to give it another pass#the cozy winter atmosphere is still there and i still very much love this map#the gigantic piles of powder surrounding buses parked in the middle of the street. flanked by cars covered up to the wing mirrors in snow#there is a part of me that finds joy in the idea of being cataclysmically “snowed in” despite the logistical headaches that come with it#it's the part of me that also found joy in pandemic lockdowns that i had to downplay. in being *expected* to stay at home no matter what#i think i selfishly want more of that. which is why i still feel more excitement than annoyance in the preparation for a winter storm#it does not help that i worked customer service through the beginnings of the pandemic & never really had the experience people lamented#anyway! i'm a winter dude and i love this map a lot
