Etymology

The country’s name comes from Mount Lebanon, whose name derives from the Phoenician root lbn, meaning “white”.

Geography

Lebanon is located in West Asia and borders Syria to the north and east, Israel to the south, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.

There are two main climates: Mediterranean-influenced humid continental in the center and east and hot-summer Mediterranean in the rest. Temperatures range from 11 °C (51.8 °F) in winter to 30 °C (86 °F) in summer. The average annual temperature is 20.9 °C (69.6 °F).

The country is divided into nine governorates (muḥāfaẓāt), which are further divided into twenty-five districts (aqdyah). The largest cities in Lebanon are Beirut, Tripoli, Jounieh, Zahlé, and Sidon.

Economy

Lebanon mainly imports from the European Union, Türkiye, and China and exports to the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Its top exports are diamonds, polyacetals, and gold.

It has natural gas, limestone, oil, and salt reserves. Services represent 83% of the GDP, followed by industry (13.1%) and agriculture (3.9%).

Lebanon is a member of the Arab League, la Francophonie, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Demographics

95% of the population is Arab, while Armenians make up 4%. The main religion is Islam, practiced by 55% of the population, 27.6% of which is Sunni.

It has a negative net migration rate and a fertility rate of 1.7 children per woman. 89% of the population lives in urban areas. Life expectancy is 78.3 years and the median age is 31.3 years. The literacy rate is 96.7%.

Languages

The official language of the country is Arabic. French is spoken by 40% of the population.

Culture

Lebanese culture has Persian, Greek, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and French influences. Lebanese people are very gregarious.

Men traditionally wear a shirt, a dark vest, baggy pants (sherwal), a belt, and a headdress. Women wear a shiny dress (gambaz), a wide belt, and a conical hat with a long piece of silk (tantur).

Traditional houses in Lebanon are made of stone and wood and have flat roofs and terraces.

Cuisine

The Lebanese diet is based on fish, meat, pulses, and vegetables. Typical dishes include bamieh bi-zeit (okra and tomato stew), kibbeh (fried balls made of spiced meat and bulgur), sayadieh (seasoned fish and rice), sfouf (an almond-semolina cake), and tabbouleh (a salad of bulgur, onion, tomatoes, and parsley).

Holidays and festivals

Like other Christian and Muslim countries, Lebanon celebrates Epiphany, Armenian Christmas, St. Maroun Day, Feast of the Annunciation Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Assumption, Christmas Day, Islamic New Year, Ashura, Mawlid, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. It also commemorates New Year’s Day and Labor Day.

Specific Lebanese holidays include Rafic Hariri Memorial Day on February 14, Liberation and Resistance Day on May 25, and Lebanese Independence Day on November 22.

Album of the Week #83

Overall Rating: 5/10

TL;DR: It’s fine unobtrusive mall music that I’ll never think about again. Please for my ears’ sake chill it with the falsettos, it’s helping no one.

Actually the worst semester of my life. But the end of college is in sight (ignoring that i will be going to grad school). 

Overall Thoughts

Gonna keep this one short and sweet like the album, although I hope this review has more substance. I’m glad I reread my Yesung review before this one, because the problems I had with this are very very similar: 

Not everyone is meant to be a soloist. 

Falsettos lose their power if the whole thing is sung high. Also it hurts to listen to. Stop doing this. 

Yena was originally a member Iz*One, which disbanded in 2021, after which she made her solo debut in 2022. She is a great singer technically, but again her voice is breathy and forced in its upper range for each and every song and it just sounds tired. I’m not saying that you need to be able to sing along for a song to be good, but it sounds like she’s struggling a bit. Western pop has moved away from this but Kpop has embraced it head on, making it really difficult to listen to (especially “VACAY,” the worst offender on the album). 

The songs themselves don’t stand out in any particular way, with the single “Smiley” hanging off of the BIBI guest verse and desperately trying to be the song of the summer, despite being released in winter. The rest are just generally upbeat songs, with my favorite being “Pretty Boys” which is just a fun junk food song. None of these songs are particularly bad, and I find myself bopping along to them, but I would be happy never hearing anything from this song, and it makes me feel like writing this review was a waste of time.

A Winter Wanderer in the Weddell Sea

Since breaking from the Brunt Ice Shelf in May 2024, a large Antarctic iceberg spent the first few months of its existence mostly hemmed in by the surrounding glue-like sea ice, especially in the new rifts. But late in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, when sea ice began to fracture and drift, Iceberg A-83 made some progress in its seaward journey away from the shelf.

These false-color images show the iceberg on May 22, 2024 (top), shortly after the ice broke from the shelf, and on August 26, 2024 (bottom). Both images were acquired with the TIRS-2 (Thermal Infrared Sensor-2) on Landsat 9. They are part of a special expanded data collection program called LEAP (Landsat Extended Acquisitions of the Poles), which has been building year-round image records of glaciers, ice shelves, and sea ice around Antarctica, Greenland, and the Arctic Ocean since 2022.

Thermal images like these can help scientists keep watch over Earth’s polar areas, even when the Sun is below the horizon and visible images are unavailable. Winter in the region lasts from March through October, with 105 of these days engulfed in 24-hour darkness, according to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The BAS operates the Halley VI Research Station, which is located on the remainder of the Brunt Ice Shelf.

Yellows and oranges indicate areas where surface temperatures are warmer, like open water or thin sea ice, while blues denote areas of colder temperatures, like the thicker ice of the iceberg and adjacent ice shelf. BAS has noted that winter air temperatures on the ice shelf are typically below minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit), with extreme lows of around minus 55°C (minus 67°F).

Note the relatively cool surface temperature of the ice-covered Weddell Sea in August compared to May. Sea ice around Antarctica reaches its maximum annual extent and thickness in late winter, usually around mid- to late-September. But even the relatively thick, late-winter sea ice can succumb to a large iceberg, in this case about the size of Portland, Oregon. According to Christopher Shuman, a University of Maryland, Baltimore County, glaciologist based at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, cracks in the sea ice were evident in late July. The berg “clearly had broken from the ‘glue’ (mélange) in early August,” he said.

By September, the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 mission and the NASA-NOAA Suomi NPP satellite observed that several pieces had broken off from Iceberg A-83 as it spun and tried to pass the McDonald Ice Rumples, a submerged knob of bedrock that has served as a pinning point for part of the shelf. However, none of the broken iceberg pieces were large enough to be named by the U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC). As of September 13, Iceberg A-83 was the 15th largest of the 46 Antarctic icebergs being tracked by the USNIC.

Poland has reached an agreement on restarting transit of Ukrainian grains through its territory as of Friday, Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus said on Tuesday, adding transits would be monitored and sealed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited troops in the small eastern city of Avdiivka on Tuesday, thanked them for their service and was briefed by commanders on the battlefield situation, his office said.

Germany has delivered a Patriot air defense system and missiles for it to Ukraine, according to the German government’s weekly update. In addition, Berlin has reportedly handed over 16 Zetros trucks and two border protection vehicles.

Poland's Development Minister Waldemar Buda added a ban on imports of Ukrainian food products to Poland would remain in place.

Pressure has been mounting on Brussels to work out a European Union-wide solution after Warsaw and Budapest announced bans on some imports from Ukraine at the weekend, with other countries in eastern Europe saying they are also considering action.

Farmers say cheap imports from Ukraine, which has faced difficulties exporting by sea due to Russia's invasion, have lowered prices and reduced their sales.

In Poland, the issue has created a problem in an election year for the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party that relies on rural areas for much of its support.

Ukraine had said its priority was to reopen transit through Poland.

"We managed to create such mechanisms that will ensure that not a single ton of grain will remain in Poland," Telus told journalists after two days of talks in Warsaw.

Avdiivka has been one of the main targets of a Russian winter offensive which was intended to reinvigorate Moscow's full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022, but has made only small territorial advances in the east.

Video footage released by Zelenskiy's office showed him addressing troops in combat gear and handing them awards in what appeared to be a large industrial warehouse with sandbags packed against at least one of the high walls.

"I have the honour to be here today, to thank you for your service, for defending our land, Ukraine, our families," he said. "I wish you only victory - this is what I wish for every Ukrainian, this is what is very important to all of us."

Zelenskiy also visited a hospital where he met wounded soldiers and handed out awards.

The video footage also showed heavily damaged high-rise residential buildings in Avdiivka, where officials say about 1,800 civilians remain.

Zelenskiy has visited troops several times in recent weeks before what is widely expected to be a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin also met troops this week, during visits on Monday to Russian-occupied parts of the Kherson and Luhansk regions.

Zelenskiy was accompanied in Avdiivka by Andriy Yermak, the head of his office, who said Ukrainian troops were preventing Russia encircling the city.

He said fierce battles were under way elsewhere in the region, and that "successful defence" was key in these places.

"Our army has already broken the enemy's plans to break through the (Ukrainian) defences and advance in the east," Yermak said on the Telegram messaging app.

Germany has delivered a Patriot air defense system and missiles for it to Ukraine, according to the German government’s weekly update.

In addition, Berlin has reportedly handed over 16 Zetros trucks and two border protection vehicles.

Germany promised to provide Ukraine with a Patriot battery in January following Washington’s commitment to send the American-made system. The Netherlands later joined the efforts.

The Patriot system is the most advanced air defense weapon in the U.S. arsenal that Kyiv has been long pleading for. One Patriot battery has four to eight launchers designed for four missiles each.

Patriots aim to significantly improve the defense of Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure against regular Russian missile attacks.

Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder said on March 30 that 65 Ukrainian soldiers had completed training on Patriot systems at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and returned to Europe.

Russia shelled the village of Richky in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy Oblast on April 18, killing an 83-year-old woman, Prosecutor General’s Office reported.

The Russian artillery troops fired at the village from Russia’s territory, hitting the woman’s house, according to the report.

Sumy Oblast is located at Ukraine’s northeastern border with Russia. It has been the target of daily Russian attacks across the border since parts of the oblast were liberated from Russian control in early April 2022.

On the same day, Russian forces also struck Donetsk Oblast’s town of Ukrainsk, injuring at least eight civilians, said Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko.

The Russian shelling of Ukrainsk damaged three high-rises and 18 pavilions of a local market, according to the oblast governor.

“Not a day goes by without Russian war crimes in the Donetsk region,” added Kyrylenko.

First of all, yes I know I am a bit late with this one as episode #97 was already broadcast a week ago. Apologies, shit happens. Let's get down to business. Pictured below is the New Zealand trio The Strange Girls, consisting of Clayton Noone, Kaaterama "Motty" Morehu and Jon Arcus. Fördämning Arkiv from the mighty Göteborg released a compilation of early work from the band last year, and lately I have been listening to this record a lot. The band was unknown to me before, and that's not that weird because they released mainly cassettes, cd-r's and very limited lathe cut vinyl, so obviously not very easy to find back in the non-digital era. Some, if not most, of those releases are now on the Bandcamp page of the band, but of you want some nice black vinyl, this is the record that you must buy. It's an absolute wonderful record that I forgot to mention in my "best of 2022" list. Atmospheric downer shoegaze folk or something. It's the third time I played a track from the record in the show and I wouldn't be surprised if that was not the last time yet.

There's some intriguing new records in the show by Nusidm, The Sheaves, The Toads, Loopsel and Current Affairs, and the regular older crackers, this time coming from i.a. The death of a woman on 7 December, following an altercation involving at least four security guards at the Iso Omena shopping mall in Espoo has sparked intense debate about security guard practices. A number of papers on Thursday carry interviews with specialists on the recent events.

Lappeenranta-based Etelä-Saimaa (siirryt toiseen palveluun) spoke to Anssi Heikkinen, security training teacher at the University of Applied Sciences of South-Eastern Finland (Xamk).

"The relevance of training needs to be reviewed from time to time, and now is the time to review it. There needs to be an open discussion about what skills a guard needs and what kind of training they need," Heikkinen said, adding that the recent incident shows that "something has gone terribly wrong."

Jyväskylä-based Keskisuomalainen (siirryt toiseen palveluun) spoke to security guard training student, Otto Nuorva.

"I've heard it being said that the whole security industry is rotten because there have been isolated incidents. It has become frustrating that the whole sector is being vilified," the 21-year-old said.

Tha paper writes that no compulsory psychological tests or background checks are carried out for training applicants. Security checks are often only conducted when security guards enter employment. Furthermore, a criminal record does not automatically revoke a person's enforcement licence, Keskisuomalainen adds.

Nuorva told the paper that people with a background involving serious violent or drug-related crime should not be able to work in the security sector.

"It's a pretty bad equation if you've been convicted of a violent crime and you're in a job where you're given power and tools of enforcement."

Finns, Swedes most enthusiastic supporters of Ukraine

Tabloid Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reports on Finns' attitudes towards European support for Ukraine.

A recent Eurobarometer poll shows major support in Finland for Ukraine, with 83 percent saying they were strongly in favour of aiding the country, 12 percent fairly in favour and only 5 percent against.

The figures show more enthusiasm compared to general EU levels, with an average of 74 percent of respondents strongly or fairly strongly in favour of helping Ukraine. Meanwhile almost a quarter, or 23 percent, were on average opposed to supporting Ukraine, IS reports.

Ilkka-Pohjalainen (siirryt toiseen palveluun) also reported on the story, noting that people in Finland and Sweden show the strongest support for Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia. Some 96 percent of Finns and Swedes agreed to the measures, according to the poll. Greeks stood on the other end of the scale, for example, with only 46 percent agreeing to the sanctions.

Gliding to the top

Skier Iivo Niskanen has been chosen as Finnish athlete of the year 2022, Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (HS) writes.

European pole vaulter Wilma Murto came second in the vote, while the third spot went to NBA player Lauri Markkanen.

The newspaper writes that the HS sports editorial team hailed Niskanen as the clear winner when choosing the athlete that stood out the most last year.

Among the athlete's triumphs is winning Olympic gold by a wide margin in the 15km Classic skiing at the Beijing Olympics last winter.

The skier, who turns 31 on Thursday, is also likely to be awarded the Athlete of the Year award at the gala organised by the Sport Journalists' Association, according to the paper.

"If Niskanen is awarded Athlete of the Year for the fourth time at the Sports gala today, it will hardly come as a surprise to anyone," HS writes.

American business magazine, Forbes, in its 2023 list of 25 richest people in the world, featured Bernard Arnault on the No. 1 spot, followed by Twitter Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk.

In its previous list in 2022, Musk was on the No. 1 spot.

Forbes described the drop of Musk from the top spot as ” this year’s second-biggest loser”, adding that “Elon Musk, had it worse.”

A friend of mine got hit with several copyright strikes from Studio71 for having the nerve to make a fan film based on the concept of V/H/S. (I made a cameo in the retooled sequel.) History

For those who don't know (probably all of you) Cellar Rentals VHS began as @/vhscultist on Instagram in September 2022 to keep up with news about the then upcoming V/H/S/99. I fell deep into a found footage phase after watching 94 (Raatma my beloved 🖤) and just wanted a place to compile news. Then people attached to the series started following me, so I started covering news & anniversaries related to the series, until I got bored in the... offseason? Between 99 & 85, I went for a more general found footage theme. Then I got bored and inactive, and decided I didn't wanna keep up with news. I deactivated without warning. But I think I still wanna be around, and Tumblr permits you to be a lot more... passive with posting.

Valid question. My name's Reverend Ray, I really like movies (especially genre film), I wanna make some someday. Right now I'm kinda just floating through life unfortunately. I'm an avid physical media collector and, when I feel it's necessary, digital archivist.
