Y/N felt like she and Kaz had become twin soldiers, marching on, pretending they were fine, hiding their wounds and bruises from the rest of the crew.
It took two more days of travel to reach the cliffs that overlooked Djerholm, but the going was easier as they moved south and toward the coast. The weather warmed, the ground thawed, and she began to see signs of spring. Y/N knew what the city looked like, having been before on quick missions. The docks were still crowded with ships, but it’s tidy streets marched to the water in orderly fashion, and the houses were painted in such colors- red, blue, yellow, pink- as if in defiance of the wild white land and the long winters this far north. Even the warehouses by the quay were wrought in cheerful colors. It looked like the city was made by fairies from her children’s books, everything was candy-hued and in its proper place.
“Cannon,” said Jesper.
Y/N turned and glanced up to where the Ice Court stood like a great white sentinel on a massive cliff overlooking the harbor.
Kaz squinted up at the big guns pointed out at the bay. “I’ve broken into banks, warehouses, mansions, museums, vaults, a rare book library, and once the bedchamber of a visiting Kaelish diplomat whose wife had a passion for emeralds. But I’ve never had a cannon shot at me.”
“There’s something to be said for novelty,” offered Jesper.
Y/N pressed her lips together, “Let’s say it’s not fun. I hope it doesn’t come to that.”
“Those guns are there to stop invading armadas,” Jesper said confidently. “Good luck hitting a skinny little schooner cutting through the waves bound for fortune and glory.”
“I’ll quote you on that when a cannonball lands in my lap,” said Nina.
They slipped easily into the traffic of travelers and traders where the cliff road met the northern road that led to Upper Djerholm. The upper town was a rambling extension of the city below, a sprawling collection of shops, markets, and inns that served the guards and staff who worked at the Ice Court as well as visitors.
Signs of Hringkalla celebrations were everywhere. The shops had created displays of pepper cookies baked in the shape of wolves, some handing like ornaments from large, twisting trees, and the bridge spanning the river gorge had been festooned with ribbons in Fjerdan silver. One way into the Ice Court and one way out. Would they cross this bridge as victors tomorrow?
“What are they?” Wylan asked, pausing in front of a peddler’s cart laden with wreaths made of the same twisting branches and silver ribbons.
“Ash trees,” replied Matthias. “Sacred to Djel.”
“There’s supposed to be one in the middle of the White Island,” said Y/N, ignoring the harsh glare the Fjerdan threw her way. Her voice was low and hard, the toll of their journey evidently forcing her back into her usual role as a soldier.
“It’s where the druskelle gather for the listening ceremony,” Nina continued.
Kaz tapped his walking stick on the ground as he stood beside the Inferni, leaning closer to her ever-so slightly. “Why is this the first I’m hearing of it?”
“The ash is sustained by the spirit of Djel,” said Matthias. “It’s where we may best hear his voice.”
“Kaz’s eyes flickered. “Not what I asked. Why isn’t it on our plans?”
“Because it’s the holiest place in all of Fjerda and not essential to our mission.”
“I say what’s essential. Anything else you decided to leave out in your great wisdom?”
“The Ice Court is a vast structure,” Matthias said, turning away. “I can’t label every crack and corner.”
“Then let’s hope nothing is lurking in those corners,” Kaz replied.
~
“Here?” Jesper complained, peering into the dank main room of the run-down tavern. The whole place stank of garlic and fish.
Kaz gave a significant glance upward and said, “Terrace.”
“What’s a gestinge?” Inej wondered aloud as she read the welcome sign.
“It means ‘paradise’,” said Matthias. Even he looked skeptical.
Y/N helped secure them a table on the tavern’s rooftop terrace. It was mostly empty, the weather still too cold to attract many patrons. Or maybe they’d been scared away by the food- herring in rancid oil, stale black bread, and some kind of butter that looked distinctly mossy.
Jesper looked down at his plate and moaned. “Kaz, if you want me dead, I prefer a bullet to poison.”
Nina scrunched her nose. “When I don’t want to eat, you know there’s a problem.”
“We’re here for the view, not the food.” Kaz spoke from beside Y/N.
She mously picked at her piece of bread, nibbling on it slowly. She had to agree with the others, the food was terrible, but it still wasn’t the worst she had had to eat before.
“We’re going to start looking conspicuous soon,” said Nina. “This isn’t the kind of place people like to linger.”
“Maybe they don’t have anyone to take to jail,” suggested Wylan.
“There’s always someone to take to jail,” Kaz replied, then bobbed his chin toward the road. “Look.”
A boxy wagon was rolling to a stop at the guardhouse. Its roof and high sides were covered in black canvas, and it was drawn by four stout horses. The door at the back was heavy iron, bolted and padlocked.
Kaz reached into his coat pocket. “Here,” he said and handed Jesper a slender book with an elaborate cover.
“Are we going to read to each other?”
“Just flip it open to the back.” Jesper opened the book and peered at the last page, puzzled. “So?”
“Hold it up so we don’t have to look at your ugly face.”
“My face has character. Besides- oh!”
“An excellent read, isn’t it?”
“Who knew I had such a taste for literature?”
Jesper passed it to Wylan, who took it tentatively. “What does it say?”
“Just look,” smiled Jesper.
Wylan frowned and held it up, then he grinned. “Where did you get this?’
Matthias had his turn and released a surprised grunt.
“It’s called a backless book,” said Kaz as Y/N took the volume from Inej and held it up.
She peered through. To the barmaid and the other patrons on the terrace, it looked like they were handing a book around, discussing some interesting passage. Instead Y/N had a close view of the gatehouse and the wagon parked in front of it. She lowered the book and looked at Kaz, a proud smirk gracing her lips. “Clever.”
He nodded and turned his head quickly, but not before she could notice the light red painting his cheeks.
“Four guards,” she said, nodding towards Matthias confirming what he had shared before.
“They’re the first line of deffence,” said Matthias. “They’ll check paperwork and confirm identities, flag anyone they think requires closer scrutiny. By this time tomorrow the line going through the gates will be full of Hringkalla guests and backed up all the way to the gorge.”
“By then we’ll be inside,” Kaz said.
They continued discussing the schedule of the wagons as Y/N lifted the backless book again. The wagon driverwore a gray uniform similar to the ones worn by the guards at the gate but absent any sash or decoration. He swung down from his seat and came around to unlock the iron door.
“Saints,” Y/N said as the door swung open. Ten prisoners were seated along benches that ran the wagon’s length, their wrists and feet shackled, black sacks over their heads. She felt the group’s apprehension rise. Only Kaz seemed unfazed.
“Hooded, chained, and shackled?” said Jesper. “You’re sure we can’t go in as entertainers?”
“We go in as we are,” said Kaz, “as criminals.”

a wip wednesday post? from moi?
that's right. I'm back babey. this is a lot of optimism for someone who has written about a thousand words in the last four months but it's fine. I've got deadlines to hit, books to finish, and overly elaborate fics to plot. with regards to that last item, this is the beginning of only a stone's throw away, affectionately subtitled "fjord and essek start a trade war," feat. some vexing third omniscient pov that, in spite of my whining, turned out very fun:
The sting of brine was sharp on the bright sun of late spring, and the sea level among the docks of the Open Quay felt several feet higher than usual. Whether this was an effect real or imagined, a product of the numerous ships currently testing the limits of the dock workers was difficult to parse, particularly when accounting for the wake of the constant flow of travel. Even so, anyone laboring under the sun could feel this remarkable weight.
The swell of business was a hallmark of the season, when numerous foreign traders overlapped with the first returns of ships that called Nicodranas their home port. Worse still, the seasonal storms had been particularly grueling this winter, coming and going with capricious mirth, and even the most audacious of captains had delayed their departures to watch how the winds would turn.
The start of the shipping season was often staggered simply by the varying personality of the captains among the Quay, but it seemed now that every ship that traveled the Lucidian was trying to unload on the docks today.
It was, many of the sailors would say later, a precursor or perhaps portent of the havoc that would soon entangle the languorous routine of the trade routes around the Menagerie Coast.
This morning, ahead of the pack, a ship by the name of the Leaping Gorgon offloaded a hull’s worth of cargo from Marquet, crates steadily passed onto the dock and dispatched across the city to waiting vendors. The crew was tight-knit and practiced, under the attentive but unworried eye of the proprietor of Stone’s Throw Shipping, of whose fleet the Gorgon was the flagship.
The dockmaster, a fellow by the name of Kaian Sarkaloff, gave the captain a jovial wave from the edge of the sea wall as they passed. The man standing on deck responded in kind, then, with a hand upon the hilt of a gleaming sword that anyone watching would swear hadn’t been in his hand a moment prior, took a step forward and dissolved into mist, and appeared again, heralded by a cold sea spray, on the far side of his ship’s cargo, half-unloaded upon the dock.
By the time he met the dockmaster with a kind smile, the sword had vanished as easily as he had.

Day 0.5 to 1 - June 10th & 11th - Sydney
Tumblr media
I flew into Sydney yesterday morning and was kindly collected from the airport by my gracious hosts Mandisa and Xavier. It was so great to see them after a long time apart and we had a beautiful and relaxing afternoon wandering Newtown, preparing for their friends 30th birthday party at the local pub. At the party, we had a great time chatting and drinking. While tipsy, we spontaneously booked the last 3 tickets to the Sydney Film Festival for the showing of the new Warwick Thornton movie New Boy.
When we got up today, we didn't have many plans beyond the movie and potentially seeing my friend sam in the afternoon. Despite this, the day unfolded like a russian doll of experiences - it just kept opening up on itself. We had a lazy morning big breakfast with avo on toast with all the trimmings then set off on a postcard perfect day in Sydney.
Tumblr media
We took the train to the city and strolled from circular quay to the botanical gardens. We put $2 in a pair of tourist binoculars and looked at the boats bobbing along the harbour and the detail of the tiles on the opera house. The intricacy of the tiles was so arresting, my mind couldn't help but see the similarity between the thousands of sleek tiles and snakeskin. We stopped for coffee in the botanical garden cafe before wandering through the Fern Garden and moving on to Hyde Park, on the way to the State theatre for showing.
Tumblr media
The theatre is unbelievably grand in the true sense of the word. I spent a solid minute in my seat with my head back on the velvet backrest, staring at chandelier and ornate latticework of the ceiling. The movie was poignant and beautifully shot with thought provoking themes surrounding colonisation and spirituality. Walking out of the stalls into the side alleyway, we saw the charmingly painted sign with the old school design of the finger pointing to "Stage Door" and paintings of old production company posters, which i loved.
Tumblr media
After the movie we wandered to Chinatown for some dumplings and ran into one of Xav's old friends, who joined us for a late lunch. When we finished our noodles and dumplings we had a little shop in the Winter sale for hiking gear for Disa and Xav's upcoming Larapinta trail hike.
Tumblr media
Walking back, we detoured via Darling Harbour as the sun was setting and Xavier suggested we hop on a ferry to watch the sunset from the harbour. A capital idea if there ever was one. We had a wonderful sightseeing experience as the ferry did "upsy-downsies" (as a little kid on board called them), and the lights of luna park twinkled against the darkening sky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hopping off the ferry, Vivid Sydney was starting and I was, to be honest, a bit surprised by the quality and how fun the experience was. We met up with my old friend Sam and his girlfriend Ange near "the big white star" installation and had a delightful time moving through the markets, under the bridge and past The Rocks. There were so many highlights. I loved seeing a wonderful spherical design projected into a fountain of water. Best of all, though, was the company. We laughed and shot the breeze against a beautiful backdrop of the city illuminated with an extra layer of brightness and art.
Tumblr media
Heading home, our feet were tired but our spirits were high. It was the best first full day of the trip I could ask for. I loved, and there is very little hyperbole in this statement, every moment.
Particularly this moment, in which i turn on my audiobook and turn off the light, getting some needed rest before a huge day of travel. Tomorrow, it's Kowabunga, dude, let's do this. Tonight, it's sweet dreams.

On July 25th 2002 George Bruce, the Scottish poet, broadcaster and critic passed away.
Bruce was from Fraserburgh and his poetry references his family’s seafaring heritage in the herring trade and his own upbringing on the wild North Sea coast. In addition to his work as a poet, Bruce worked as a BBC producer for more than 20 years.
On his retirement from the BBC he was appointed as the first Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, alongside similar posts in the USA, and a Scottish Australian Writing Fellowship.
In 2000, he received an honorary Doctorate from his alma mater, the University of Aberdeen, to add to another from Wooster College Ohio.
Last year Bruce joined the likes of Sir Walter Scott, Rabbie Burns, and Robert Louis Stevenson at Makars’ Court.
The stone is inscribed with his name and the line:
The sea trembles – voiceless
It is the rare moment
when a word is sought.
(from Pursuit. Poems 1986-1998. Haiku Envoi).
Here is a poem I like by George Bruce;
Aberdeen, The Granite City
The brown land behind, south and north Dee and Don and east the doubtful sea, The town secured by folk that warsled With water, earth and stone; quarrying, Shaping, smoothing their unforgiving stone, Engineering to make this sufficient city That takes the salt air for its own. The pale blue winter sky, the spring green trees, The castigating thunder rain, the wind Beating about the midnight streets, The hard morning sun make their change By the white unaltered granite – Streets of it, broad roadways, granite pavemented To the tall tenements, rectangular wide-walled stores, To the kirks and pillared Assembly Rooms; Streets with drinking troughs for the animals, And at the port quays crowded, Overfed with horses, lorries, men and boys, And always and at every point Clatter on the causies. Business is good, will be good here At the dead end of time. Record then This people who purposive and with strategy Established a northern city, a coast town That stands and stares by the waters, Dee and Don and the sea.

What is the terrain/climate of your Kingdom like, and what kinds of outdoor activities are popular there?
Sunderland would have a very diverse terrain and climate. It's a sprawling country that occupies huge swathes of the North American continent.
So, up in the northeast, around cities like Woodbine and Warwick, you'd get harsher winters, but decent summers with some rain. I'd imagine these cities to be near the Great Lakes. So lots of fresh water sources and national parks.
Once you go to the southwest, the territories Sunderland acquired later on in its history, things get a bit warmer. Queen's Quay, a city we're about to visit in my story, is a vacation hotspot because it never snows or even rains. It's by no means a desert, but you'll get palm trees, summertime drought, a great view of the Pacific, all that nice stuff.

Neom, NEOM, Sindalah, and Oxagon
Tumblr media
Neom evokes both its name and future potential. A linear city in Saudi Arabia. New NEOM projects include an island destination, seaport, and mountain ski city - each an ambitious engineering feat in scale and scope. Shusha Island Coral Park KAUST and NEOM, an internationally acclaimed development company in Saudi Arabia's northwest region, have come together to build the largest coral garden ever. Called Shusha Island Coral Park, it will cover 100 hectares on the Red Sea. Here will be showcased innovations to protect and restore coral reefs and marine organisms; accelerate conservation solutions, and mitigate climate change effects. The project will employ an innovative hybrid of marine farming and transplantation with international expertise to accelerate coral restoration efforts. Their team has devised a methodology for growing clones of corals under controlled environments before transporting them to sites degraded by pollution or disease, mimicking natural conditions necessary for coral to flourish and protect Kingdom marine ecosystems at once. Shusha Island, home to more than 300 native coral and 1,000 fish species, will become the site for new coral gardens that will feature marinas, hotels and villas, beach clubs, and underwater museums - creating an immersive marine environment that attracts scientists, eco-tourists, and researchers. Trojena Ski Resort Located in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia, the NEOM project will host both an outdoor ski resort and the 2029 Asian Winter Games. As part of a larger $500 billion plan to build smart cities, trade ports, research centers, and ultra-luxury hotels; its development also encompasses ecotourism initiatives. However, while excitement surrounds this new destination there are concerns regarding its sustainability - according to reports, producing snow and ice requires vast amounts of energy and water resources - leaving much less for other development efforts such as smart cities or research centers, or ultra-luxury hotels compared with alternatives such as smart cities or trade ports or research centers being built at once. Development projects also threaten to displace tribespeople, sparking outrage from human rights organizations and leading one tribal activist to commit suicide after posting videos online regarding his eviction to make way for these projects. To address these concerns, the project has been designed with sustainable features in mind. These will include solar thermal energy plants and rainwater harvesting systems as well as centralized waste management systems which aim at reducing waste while mitigating pollution. Explore, Discover, Gateway, Valley, Relax and Fun will comprise six unique districts at this ski resort - Discover, Gateway Valley Relax, and Fun will each provide unique experiences based on your individual needs; for instance, the Valley District will host art exhibits concerts cultural events while Relax will offer spa services and wellness programs while Discover will feature an observatory with educational technologies to enhance night sky viewing experience. Oxagon Port Oxagon will be located along the Red Sea coast and equipped with an automated port that integrates smart supply chain management. It aims to foster innovation, attract global talent, and resuscitate manufacturing innovations. NEOM is part of an ambitious plan by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) to develop an advanced and green industrial hub. This year, construction of Duba Port will commence with its initial phase. This project includes building a cargo terminal and quay walls by Belgian firm Besix and Dutch dredging company Boskalis as part of an overall scheme to transform one of Saudi Arabia's smaller ports, Duba Port, into an efficient logistics hub. The circular design of the port will minimize its environmental impacts and preserve 95% of the area. Furthermore, its structure will support various maritime transport activities, such as containerization and offshore oil and gas exploration. The Port will be served by The Connector, a new high-speed rail line running along the Red Sea coast from Neom's Oxagon port city to its linear city, The Line. Webuild, a joint venture of Weir Group and Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company signed this week a contract to build 57km of The Line railway track. Sindalah Island Resort Sindalah will serve as NEOM's gateway for unique nautical experiences surrounded by a vibrant marine environment. The destination will host sophisticated cultural events, grand sporting spectacles, glamorous social celebrations, and luxurious social celebrations throughout the year. Sindalah features an exclusive 86-berth marina with offshore buoys for superyachts as well as luxury hotels; additionally, there will be a beach club, yacht club, and 38 unique culinary destinations included in this project. The project will also include the Kingdom's inaugural Autograph Collection Hotel, scheduled to open its doors in 2024. With 66 luxurious rooms and suites - including one and two-bedroom villas - and numerous dining and leisure options, as well as a spa experience featuring different treatment rooms and relaxation lounges, this will become the crowning achievement of this ambitious endeavor. Sindalah Island Resort will feature a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II with panoramic views of both the Red Sea and mountains, incorporating an innovative dual tee system for added variety and perspectives during play - it will be the first such golf course ever constructed in Saudi Arabia! WHOLE LOTTA MONEY (excerpt from my novella SLUTMANIA)
Tumblr media
Sometimes, beaten down by the savagely tiresome rhythm of the forty hour work week, I feel the need to escape from hyperreality, get away from the screens and feeds and streams, the self awareness and the interconnectedness, to be out of the market for just a moment. On days like this I develop a headache and my body starts feeling weird. It is hard to find solitude, silence or open space in the heart of a city of millions.
There is this long strip of quay, the terrain is in a stage between industrial site and yuppie urban development, there is lots of flat concrete and the broad Spree’s still dark waters make me feel at least somehow near to nature.
Even here dystopian white generic gated buildings adorned with a manifold of signs reading ‘Privatgrundstück. Unbefugten ist das Betreten verboten!’ remind me of evergrowing structural inequality and the tastelessness of the elites. Regardless it’s the closest to “the real world” as I can get without hours of travel. Sometimes, if you ignore the constant hum of two highways, a railroad track, the occasional helicopter, it approaches silence.
I am excited for the winter since then at least I will be able to roam the empty of the streets in peace. I will be able to go to the forest at Treptower without the constant techno and drug induced screaming which emanates from party boats.
I am scared for the winter since the sun is my God and gives me life and the prospect of spending eight months in a dark room in the blue hue of LED displays is already sucking the life force out of me.
Strolling next to the dark waters I contemplate my social life. October is nearing and all of my friends seem to have left the city, either permanently or to escape the winter.  I think of how I had made it through the darkness last year and it dawns on me, last winter I still took drugs.
People had these smart light bulbs. I would sit there in someone’s bedroom on the floor in the saturated pink LED-light with three others listening to hardstyle or WHOLE LOTTA MONEY, in a khole, thinking what is life and how does anyone think this is entertaining. That’s when I decided to stop getting high. Welcome to the desert of the real?

In Memory of W. B. Yeats
W. H. Auden
I
He disappeared in the dead of winter: The brooks were frozen, the airports almost deserted, And snow disfigured the public statues; The mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day. What instruments we have agree The day of his death was a dark cold day.
Far from his illness The wolves ran on through the evergreen forests, The peasant river was untempted by the fashionable quays; By mourning tongues The death of the poet was kept from his poems.
But for him it was his last afternoon as himself, An afternoon of nurses and rumours; The provinces of his body revolted, The squares of his mind were empty, Silence invaded the suburbs, The current of his feeling failed; he became his admirers.
Now he is scattered among a hundred cities And wholly given over to unfamiliar affections, To find his happiness in another kind of wood And be punished under a foreign code of conscience. The words of a dead man Are modified in the guts of the living.
But in the importance and noise of to-morrow When the brokers are roaring like beasts on the floor of the bourse, And the poor have the sufferings to which they are fairly accustomed And each in the cell of himself is almost convinced of his freedom A few thousand will think of this day As one thinks of a day when one did something slightly unusual.
What instruments we have agree The day of his death was a dark cold day.
II
You were silly like us; your gift survived it all: The parish of rich women, physical decay, Yourself. Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry. Now Ireland has her madness and her weather still, For poetry makes nothing happen: it survives In the valley of its making where executives Would never want to tamper, flows on south From ranches of isolation and the busy griefs, Raw towns that we believe and die in; it survives, A way of happening, a mouth.
III
Earth, receive an honoured guest: William Yeats is laid to rest. Let the Irish vessel lie Emptied of its poetry.
In the nightmare of the dark All the dogs of Europe bark, And the living nations wait, Each sequestered in its hate;
Intellectual disgrace Stares from every human face, And the seas of pity lie Locked and frozen in each eye.
Follow, poet, follow right To the bottom of the night, With your unconstraining voice Still persuade us to rejoice;
With the farming of a verse Make a vineyard of the curse, Sing of human unsuccess In a rapture of distress;
In the deserts of the heart Let the healing fountain start, In the prison of his days Teach the free man how to praise.

Fundy Quay development continues, creating a 'central gathering place' in Uptown Saint John, N.B.
A multi-million dollar project aimed at creating a place to gather along the Saint John, N.B., waterfront is showing signs of progress.
The foundation is poured at the new amphitheater and steel beams erected. Concrete forms are up in the shape of islands. Once filled and finished, they’ll serve as year-round seating. While in the winter, they'll be part of a skating rink.
“It’s going to make the facility friendly kind of 12 months of the year,” says Market Square business owner GayeAnn Walsh. “So now we will be able to develop a winter market too.”
Walsh has owned and operated Walsh Luggage ever since the building came to be in 1983.
“It’s been kind of a dream of mine to see this before my days are done here,” beams Walsh. “I’ve been here for 40 years now, so it’s very exciting.”
That sentiment is echoed by fellow Market Square business owner Jesse Vergen.
“Once this project is completed it’s going to be a magical figurehead for New Brunswick,” says the owner of the Saint John Ale House. “This has been sort of on the drawing board for the past 30 years, so finally all the money is coming together and this project is taking off.”
Saint John City Coun. David Hickey believes the project will serve as a cornerstone for positive growth in the Port City.
“This is going to set the table for what we want growth in Saint John to look like,” says Hickey. “We want the community to feel that they can really have a place to be Uptown. Have a central gathering place, and make sure that our waterfront continues to be publicly accessible.”
Hickey says his constituents are feeling the excitement with the sight of infrastructure being put in place.
“It’s going to see an extension of Harbour Passage from the boardwalk around the waterfront.” Says Hickey. “It’s going to add public gathering space, it's going to add patios for the businesses along there, it’s going to add skating. I mean there’s a lot to be excited about here.”
The public portion of the project is set to wrap up at the end of 2023. Some areas will be finished sooner if all goes to schedule.
“We’re going to have 4 season patios with retractable glass,” says the owner of the Saint John Ale House. “And be able to create events and feed and water the local population all year around.”
The restaurant patios for Market Square are set to open on June 30.
