Victory and sacrifice - these are the first words that come to mind when I think about Tyr. When I started this journey, Tyr was one of the deities that fascinated me the most. To me there is a sort of deep sadness to him. In a way Tyr is the embodiment of pyrrhic victory - a victory with such a devasting toll that it’s almost a defeat. It’s also fascinating that a god of war and justice loses his sword hand. Does this mean that Tyr only carries a shield? And if it does, what does this mean for justice? Thor and Freyr are the ones who are usually associated with protection. But, looking at the sources - and my own upg - I have come to associate him with a Tolkien quote: “I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for its glory. I love only what which they defend.” To me this embodies Tyr’s energy. After all, his own sacrifice to Fenrir is for the greater good. It’s not like Odin’s sacrifice, this is not for knowledge. This sacrifice is not for glory. It’s simply doing what needs to be done. In that way I see him in the rune Nauthiz. The need that forces us to do what needs to be done.
Tyr is also Tiwaz, of course. His own rune speaks of his facets - law, fairness, justice, sacrifice. To me, this is always a rune of right action and it embodies Tyr and Fenrir’s story. Your actions have consequences. What you do to others, you ultimately do to yourself. In this, I don’t think that there’s a better Tarot card to represent him than Justice. More than a court of law, I think that Tyr represents facing the consequences. When it comes to Victory, Tyr shows us that it cannot happen without sacrifice. In English the word “win” comes from “winnan” that means “to struggle”. This I believe, is another of his dominions, winning through struggle. Nothing ever comes easy.
To some it may seem weird, but Gebo is another rune that I personally associate with Tyr. The law of reciprocation is very Tyr in essence. But this isn’t just about consequences in a negative sense, this is also gift-giving an ever-occurring process that guaranteed a good relationship and strengthened bonds. This too is Tyr. Justice is not just punishment, but rather mending what’s been broken. In the story of Fenrir’s binding perhaps what hurts the most is not the loss of a hand, but a loss of honor and the breaking of the bond between Tyr and Fenrir.
In the sources I also find it interesting that Tyr never really shows himself as your typical war deity (whatever that means). Despite being syncretized with Mars by the Romans, I don’t see many similarities between them. Perhaps one of the most fascinating passages is in the Lokasenna when Tyr comes to Freyr’s defense and calls him “the best of all gods”. Let’s not forget that Freyr is a deity of peace, showing us a bit of what Tyr thinks about war. It’s also interesting that Freyr comes to Tyr’s defense just a couple of stanzas later. (I honestly could spend a lot of time just analyzing the god’s relationships in the Lokasenna). In the end, I guess that I just want to say that Tyr is so much more than a god of war.

image 1: i was asked to draw a mista giraffe so i made this terrifying blipblip-like creature with italian hands for legs
image 2: he’s on the wall, now. imagine this little guy greeting you like a dog when you get home and his handfeet go plap plap plap on the hardwood floor and he scrambles up your legs and torso like a tree frog and licks your cheek with his neck curved around the back of yours
Edit: oh no. he exploded on discord. people find him either adorable or terrifying.

Considering that Vênus, goddess of Love, etymologically comes from *wenh₁, and venom comes from the same root, I've read somewhere the possibly the original meaning of venom in Latin was some sort of "love potion", or potion to attract/seduce one's beloved.
From the Etymological Dictionary of Latin and Other Italic Languages by de Vaan:
venēnum ‘potent herb, poison’[…]
The form suggests PIt. *wenes-no-, a derivative of venus ‘desire, love’ (cf. catēna *kates-nā-). WH interpret the original meaning as ‘love drink’, which would imply that the term arose in the context of sorcery. If the original meaning was a more neutral adj. *wenes-no- ‘poisonous’, it might have developed from ‘with desire’ via ‘addicting’ to ‘pernicious, poisonous’.
He cites the root as *u̯enh1- ‘desire’. LIV, otoh, cites *u̯enH- ‘liebgewinnen’ (= ‘grow fond of’). The final *h1 in de Vaan is based on the Hittite u̯en-/uu̯an- mi ‘to copulate’, perhaps with initial laryngeal as well (thus then *(H)u̯enh1-).
The range of meanings it’s supposed to cover if the cognates cited in both de Vaan and LIV are taken into account is really wide though, even within a single branch (e.g. just Germanic: Go. wens ‘hope’, OIc. ván, OE wān ‘supposition, opinion’; OHG wunscen ‘to wish’; Go. winnan ‘to suffer’, OIc. vinna ‘to labour, overcome’ (from de Vaan); ON venja ‘gewöhnen’ (=‘to get used to’), ON una ‘zufrieden sein’ (‘to be satisfied, content’), OHG wonēn ‘verweilen, wohnen’ (‘to dwell, to live’) (from LIV)).
#for stuff like this the actual etymological dictionaries have more weight than anything i might write here#j#lang#pide#anon#ask

Tanna! Tanna Nyx Elbridge Winnan-a-Bear Lilyfoot Leopard Goatheat Bluejack Cardinal Owlet! (Gnomes acquire nicknames almost as a hobby, you know.)
2. How good are they at tongue twisters? Well, she can rattle off her entire name in half a breath, does that count?
6. What’s their theme song? “Touch the Sky” from Brave, “Now and for Always” from the Lord of the Rings musical
8. Paper or plastic? Paper! She’s very environmentally conscious - or would be, if plastic was a thing yet in her vaguely medieval fantasy world.
21. How did they become an adventurer? She wanted to go out and, um, hear the world after college - get some real-life experience, you know? Find something to write about. Great deeds to recount. And her good (best?) friend, @ninzja‘s aasimar paladin Corvyre, was having dreams from her goddess that said there was some great evil to be fought underground…Tanna was a little skeptical of that, actually, though she didn’t tell Corvyre. But she figured the camping trip would be a good start to her adventures. She did not expect them to be captured by drow, much less encounter all these demons.
