Waiting for the storm and a house blessing, while drinking the 2013 Panapé rosé from Bluejacket Crossing winery in Kansas. 100% St Vincent grapes. Bright and juicy, yet dry. New varietals: Castelão and Trincadeira (154 and 155). José Maria de Fonesca Peninsula de Setubal Periquita Original 2010, Vinho Regional Peninsula de Setubal, Portugal. Blend is of 74% Castelão, 15% Trincadeira, and 12% Aragonez (Tempranillo). Purchased at Whole Foods in Prescott, AZ. The wine is a dark ruby-garnet red in color. Nose: I detect notes of vanilla, cedar, lilac, sour cherry, plum and lindonberry, with some slight acetone. Not much to be excited about at first. As the wine opens, notes of lavender, smoke, dust, rosemary, and a pine forest appear. Palate: this wine is much brighter and more exuberant than I expected. Juicy, jammy cherry and raspberry intermingle with deep cedar and earthy notes. Yet there are also very sharp tannins here. The finish is long, lasting for a minute with notes of chokecherry, cedar, and tannins. Decent acidity. Despite the tannins, I'd classify this wine as medium-bodied, overall. Pairing: serve this wine with bbq spare ribs or roasted eggplant with paprika and provolone cheese. For a more traditional Portuguese pairing, go for bife a cavalo (Steak with a fried egg on top) Impressions: it is both old and young at heart. Also, this wine is better than I expected.
