Beringer Vineyards, St. Helena (No. 1)
Beringer Vineyards is a large winery in St. Helena, California. Founded in 1876, Beringer Vineyards is "the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley", and is listed under both the National Register of Historic Places and as a California Historical Landmark. In 1934 it was the first California winery to offer public tours and wine tasting following the repeal of Prohibition. In 1939, Beringer invited attendees of the Golden Gate International Exposition to visit the winery; the winery also invited Hollywood stars including Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, and Carole Lombard to visit.

Harry plans romantic getaway: Headcanon:
Harry notices that you've been stressed out.
You've been stressing out over exams and your daily chores and not to mention your job that's been eating at you. Stress lines appeared around your eyes along with dark circles.
Harry being the empathic person he was grew deeply concerned for your mental health.
So he immediately started planning a sweet getaway to Napa. He wanted to take you to a fancy winery.
"Pack your bags yn, we're going on vacation!" Says a Harry who bursts into your room at 2 in the morning.
"Plane leaves at 5 by the way so hurry."
In a tired huff, you pack a weeks worth of clothes and everything you need with groggy eyes.
You and Harry are now in the car racing to the airport on time with you catching upon some sleep with your cheek pressed against the glass.
"We're here at the airport yn!" Says a cheery Harry.
You and Harry are racing inside the airport with suitcases and backpacks slung over your shoulder.
Harry gives security, the flight attendant and everyone that's important in getting on the plane your passports to scan.
Once you're on board, Harry slings his arm around you and nuzzles you into his chest.
And then a screaming baby gets on board....
But then you make a funny face and the baby settles down with their parents exchanging grateful looks with you.
Harry falls in love with you more with your ability to handle children.
"Now landing in Napa." The overhead speaker says.
Harry and you take the bags and leave the airplane.
Harry checks you into a beautiful house on the vineyard property.
Tumblr media
Harry surprises you saying his 'lady' deserves the best.
You both enjoy a wine tasting tour filled with luxurious wines from all over.
Harry being a lightweight gets tipsy easily.
So you help him back to your vacation house where he comes on to you.
And you tell him to save his energy for later. With a scandalous look on your face...
Harry sobers up and takes you out to a fancy restaurant for dinner.
You have on your pretty red dress with the lacy flowers on it that Harry goes crazy for.
He leans in and kisses you passionately and asks if you're enjoying your vacation.
"Of course I am." You say licking some pasta sauce off your husbands fingers.
Harry hurriedly pays the bill and snags a bottle of champagne and takes you off to the house.
You two enjoy a very lustful night of passion. With a glass of champagne of course.
You stayed a maximum of 2 weeks in Napa valley. Taking back some fancy wines and champagnes with you.
You came back less stressed and more relaxed an in tune with your emotions as well as Harry.
You thanked your wonderful husband for providing a sweet get away for you as an expression of his deep devotion for you.

Vineyard workers.  Watercolor by Jake Lee (from the collection of the Chinese Historical Society of America).
Chinese Pioneers in California’s Wine Industry
The work by the Chinese is excavating the wine caves for what would become the Buena Vista winery has been well known and researched by the original deans of Chinese American historiography, the late Phil Choy and Him Mark Lai.  The story of Chinese participation in building this industry of Sonoma County and California continues to attract the interest of local historians.
In 2018, I toured the BV winery again last year with the executive director of the Chinese Historical Society of America. With a couple exceptions, most of the guides were aware of the provenance of BV’s wine caves. The then-new ownership appears more committed to recounting the substantial contributions made by Chinese labor and engineering staff into the larger history of this landmark winery.  Photos of Chinese men working in the fields and bottling wine are displayed in Buena Vista’s tasting room.
“We feel it’s more important than ever to talk about the reason we exist and the people who contributed to it − Chinese, Hungarian, French,” says Jean-Charles Boisset, whose family company, Boisset Collection, a US subsidiary of Boisset, La Famille des Grands Vins (France’s third largest wine holding company and Burgundy’s largest producer), bought BV in 2011.
An 2017 article by NPR food reporter, Grace Hwang Lynch, summarized the labor and the ultimate fate of the Chinese workers whose involvement in virtually all phases of the production literally built a multi-billion dollar industry for Northern California and the US.  “In 1857,” Hwang wrote, “a wealthy Hungarian named Agoston Haraszthy purchased a ranch in Sonoma Valley and named it Buena Vista, with the vision of introducing winemaking techniques from his homeland. . . . Haraszthy turned to Ho Po, a Chinese labor contractor from San Francisco, who sent 150 of his countrymen to build Buena Vista, Sonoma's oldest commercial winery.“
Tumblr media

The Chinese workers dug a cave network for the BV winery which is actually more extensive than what a causal tour will disclose.  However, a couple of the 19th century excavations have collapsed due to past seismic activity.
Chinese labor also dug the caves for other wineries.  In 1870, Jacob Schram found new employment for the Chinese laborers who had recently finished constructing tunnels and grades over the Sierra Nevada Mountains for the Union Pacific Transcontinental Railroad.Schram hired them to dig a network of caves through the soft Sonoma Volcanics Formation rock underlying his vineyard. To its credit, the Schramsberg website also acknowledges the Chinese laborers who dug Napa’s first hillside caves for wine-aging and storage.

Tumblr media

In the late 1870′s Hwang recounts, the locals began to drive out the Chinese from Sonoma County’s vineyards through economic boycott or worse.
Tumblr media
“1106 -- Buena Vista Vineyard, Sonoma -- Bottling Wine,” no date. Photographer unknown (from the collection of Buena Vista Winery and George Webber).
The experience of the Sonoma County Chinese demonstrates that the aggregate, private violence continued even after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.  Local law enforcement either turned a blind eye or aided such violence, and the decades that straddled 1882 produced an internal migration of nonwhite Americans in the western US that had not been seen since the Trail of Tears (which was essentially done at gunpoint in a military operation), and would not be seen again until the Great Migration of African-Americans from the rural South between 1916 and 1970.
The Chinese would remain in vintners’ workforces into the next century, local conditions permitting.  However, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 would continue to exact a toll on the population of laborers, and growers would gravitate toward other groups of agricultural workers.
Tumblr media
“Chinese farm workers pruning a vineyard,” c. 1900.  Photographer unknown (from the Title Insurance and Trust Collection of the California Historical Society).  CHS wrote about this photo in its Spring 1978 quarterly as follows:  “Under the watchful eyes of Yankee overseers, Chinese laborers built California’s railroad, reclaimed the Delta, and nursed the state’s infant agriculture, including its vineyards.  .
The Chinese pioneers left as their legacy the foundation of a multi-billion dollar industry upon which the economy of California prospers in the 21st century.  Even today, researchers and writers continue to coax from the historical record more stories of a vibrant presence in the state’s earliest vineyards.

“The Vintage In California -- At Work At the Wine Presses.”  Drawing by Paul Frenzeny (from the Robert B. Honeyman, Jr. Collection of Early Californian and Western American Pictorial Material at the Bancroft Library)
Note about the artist (by Theresa Salazar of the Bancroft Library):
French artist Paul Frenzeny came to North America in the 1860s to serve under Marshal Achille Bazaine, commander of the French expeditionary corps in Mexico, sent to support Napoleon Ill's abortive effort to establish an empire there under Archduke Maximilian of Austria. Sometime before 1868 Frenzeny went to New York City, for between that year and 1873 Harpers Weekly published some twenty of his sketches, showing New York views as well as events in the Mexican war and the Pennsylvania coal fields (Samuels, p. 178).
Harpers commissioned Frenzeny and Jules Tavernier, another Frenchman, to travel across the country and record the landscape in remote, unexplored areas, telling its readers that "these gentle-men will not restrict themselves to the ordinary routes of travel. They will make long excursions on horseback into regions where railroads have not penetrated, where even the hardy squatter, the pioneer of civilization, has not yet erected his rude log-cabin" (Harpers Weekly, November 8, 1873, p. 994). The men left New York in the fall of 1873 and reached San Francisco the following summer, riding horseback from Denver.
Frenzeny apparently stayed on in San Francisco for at least six years and became known for his illustrations and sketches of Chinatown (Hughes, p. 400). He participated in the artistic life of the city and became a member of the new Bohemian Club. His partnership with Tavernier may have ended shortly after the men arrived in San Francisco, for Harper's illustrations of California and Nevada subjects between 1876 and 1878 and in the early eighties were signed by Frenzeny alone. In 1879 Harper's published Central American drawings executed on his journey back to New York. Between 1882 and 1887 Frenzeny's work appeared in Leslie's Weekly. Frenzeny later provided 150 illustrations for Harrington O'Reilly's Fifty Years on the Trail, Frenzeny’s last known publication (1889). The last decade or so of his life is undocumented, but he is believed to have died in London in 1902 (Karolik, 1:163-164; and Hughes, p. 192).

72 Hours in Yountville, Napa Valley – the Ultimate Food Lovers Experience|Yountville
Tumblr media
Napa Valley is dotted with five distinct cities and towns. Among them, Yountville is widely acknowledged as the culinary heart of the valley. For food lovers, the town is the epicenter of culinary excellence – both for fine dining and at a more casual level. Culinary luminaries such as Thomas Keller, Philippe Jeanty, Cindy Pawlcyn, and the late Michael Chiarello all selected Yountville for their flagship restaurants. Spend three nights in Yountville and you can’t help but discover what makes this small town the ultimate food lovers’ hub.
Day 1: Arrive in Napa Valley, the epicenter of fine food, wine, and hospitality in the U.S.
Check In to Your Home Away from Home
Hotel Yountville, for example, is situated at the edge of town on five secluded acres. The 80-room boutique resort property is exclusive to guests, giving it a private vibe. Take a walk around the property, unpack, and relax. On the opposite end of town, try the family-owned Napa Valley Lodge, which was named one of Travel + Leisure’s top 500 hotels of 2024.
Explore & Cocktail
Yountville is imminently walkable. Stretch your legs and stroll through town. Take in the public art walk sculptures and stop for a glass of wine, cocktail, or zero proof options at one of Yountville’s favorite spots. Suggestions: R&D Kitchen, Ciccio, The Restaurant at North Block, RH Yountville, or Bottega.
A Classic Yountville Dinner
Start your visit off by dining at one of Yountville’s restaurants with maximum staying power for your first night. Mustards Grill has delighted locals and visitors alike for more than four decades with elevated American faire. Since 1998, Philippe Jeanty’s Bistro Jeanty and Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro have taken the quintessential French bistro to a new level.
Day 2: Wine, Dine, Indulge
Food and wine discoveries are what Napa Valley dreams are made of.
A Delicious Morning, Your Way
Breakfast in Yountville can be as simple as a perfectly executed scone and coffee or a more elaborate affair. You decide, but on this food tour, don’t skip this most important meal of the day! Read more about breakfast options in Yountville.
Book a Leisurely Culinary Experience
Legendary wine estates such as Chandon, Cakebread Cellars, St. Supéry Vineyards & Winery, and Trefethen Family Vineyards complement many of their wine tasting experiences through a culinary lens. Wine and food are made to go together and no one knows this better than Napa Valley’s winemakers.
Add a Light Lunch
Since 1996, Brix Restaurant & Gardens has defined the ultimate farm-to-table experience.  Take in a light lunch and enjoy a stroll their culinary gardens. Or drop into Honor Market for one of their famous hotdogs.
Lounge at Your Accommodations
Part of what makes a 72-hour visit so relaxing is being able to build in downtime. Yountville’s resorts offer hidden perks and surprises. At the Estate Yountville, for example, enjoy complimentary wine tastings at the estate’s Hotel Villagio lobby on Thursdays through Saturdays.
Afternoon Pick Me Up
Yountville is home to myriad places to get a sweet treat. Don’t miss Kollar Chocolates, Madeleine’s Macarons, or Bouchon Bakery.
Takes a Lot of Beer to Make Wine
Beer is a favorite beverage of winemakers throughout Napa Valley, including the crafters of Mad Fritz Beer, a uniquely brewed beer. Stop into their Yountville Tap Room for a taste of something completely different.
Dinner
If night one was about the classic restaurants, night two affords you the opportunity to check out newer entries in town. The Restaurant at North Block, The Restaurant at RH, and Ciccio are three names shaping Yountville’s modern dining scene.
And for a Nightcap…
As a small agricultural community, Napa Valley restaurants tend to close around 9 p.m., but Yountville’s RO Restaurant & Lounge is open late with music, caviar and cocktails, and small bites to wind down this epic day.
Day 3: Add a Wellness Day
After a few days of indulgence, add a day of wellness with a dash of great food to your itinerary.
Move in the Morning, Get Outside
Play a round of golf right in the town of Yountville or take a run or bike ride on the Napa Valley Vine Trail.
Recharge with a Nourishing Brunch or Lunch
Napa Valley restaurants are known for their use of fresh, local, and organic ingredients, and Yountville’s favorites are no exception. Try: Lucy at Bardessono Hotel & Spa, which has its own onsite gardens, or on the weekends, dip into La Calenda for their brunch offered all day.
Relax and Pamper
Alongside a food fueled visit to Napa Valley, reconnect with yourself with a spa afternoon. Soak in a pool, indulge in a massage treatment or facial treatment. Tip: Book your spa experiences when you book your hotel rooms.
Walk to a Shared Dinner
Nothing recharges the mind, body, and soul quite like sharing a meal together. Try Ad Hoc, that serves the nightly selections family-style (another Thomas Keller favorite), or Bottega, where nourishing plates of pasta and grilled meats are easily shared.
Day 4: Depart, but Before You Do….
One last croissant from Bouchon Bakery, and a sandwich for the road. Stop into Finesse the Store by Thomas Keller for last minute gifts and reminders of your ultimate culinary visit.
