Mega Man franchise (near) complete anniversary calendar

Since I couldn't find this anywhere else online (Seriously! Why doesn't this exist!), here's a mostly complete collection of the release dates of every single megaman franchise game and some extras. I've tried to keep it to one line per game where feasible but this has led to some abbreviations such as "PS1" instead of "Playstation".

This calendar will always count the earliest release region and platform and for dual release games I've not included the subtitles as some of the listings would get very long.

Mega Man Battle network legacy collections 1&2 both released for PS4 but since they are digital only, this effectively acts as being released for both PS4 AND 5 so I listed 5 as I feel it's the more relevant choice.

If I've missed any games please comment to let me know :D (or if I've made any mistakes! I've already fixed some things based on feedback!), I was going to include all the manga series too as those particularly interested me but it was too difficult to track them all down with dates so I haven't bothered but I can always come back in future to edit this, if anyone knows about them: please send me a DM!. I may also add the Mega Man complete works artbooks at some point too, but I can't be bothered researching that rn. If you REALLY want them on the timeline, comment or DM.

If any wiki resource or anything wants to use this feel free but please for the love of god fact check it please, as I write this sentence it is 1am and I very may well have written something wrong or used a source that has incorrect information.

If anyone wants this formatted like a regular hangup calendar, let me know and I'll consult the graphic design department (Don't worry @faustisgettingviolent I'm not talking about you)

*I speculate this one was released around October 21st 1994 due to the fact that it came very near the release of Mega Man The Wily Wars. As both games acted as a sort of campaign to introduce sega players to Mega Man it's likely they were intended to release around the same time, however the wily wars never saw a physical American release. If anyone has a source for the game gear games original release date please do let me know.

how do u burn cds, my bf got me for christmas a cd burning station and now im wondering whats the best program to use (we used note burner for spotify conversion but we got our spotify acc taken down because of that lmaoo) so now im looking for alternatives while still keeping audio quality relatively good

I GOT U I GOT U OK SO you will need a windows laptop bcz otherwise it won't work (it probably will but this is my method and idk how to use it with apple) so

step 1. get that laptop open and plug in ur cd burner and insert a blank disc

step 2. open ur windows search and search "windows media player legacy"

step 3. a little thingy on the left sidebar should show up and have a thing that says "blank disc" click on that

step 4. then on that it should have a sort of blank screen w something that says "open the burn tab" click on that and then upload your music files

step 5. once u upload them put them in the burn list on the right side of the screen and then press "start burn"

and for good downloaders my friend reccomended me to "spotdownload" where u can download songs and playlists off spotify BUT alternatively you can use "amp3.cc" to download songs and playlists off youtube!!

did you follow any sort of guide when reskinning your computer to vista?

No, but most programs I use have individual guides, Ive put everything below for anyone interested. Make sure to create system restore points before and inbetween, please note Im not a computer guy in the least. I do not have my Windows 10 PC's best interest in mind, and Im actively trying to kill this laptop any way I can.

Start Menu: Vistalike skin on Open Shell. Files are at the bottom of the thread Login: Custom Logon Hook skin for Vista (UNSTABLE, NOT RECOMMENDED. Make sure Ctrl+Alt+Delete is enabled) Theme: Aero10 I use the Vista (shiny) variant. Not compatible with certain screen resolutions. DWMBlurGlass (for window color/opacity) may occasionally stop, I just reapply when it happens. If the program suddenly doesn't open, restarting usually does the trick. Taskbar: StartIsBack for UI, Open Shell for texture + start button. SIB's trial expiration only affects the start menu which I'm already using Open Shell for so its basically free. Uncheck all Switching tab options. For texturing, I just screenshotted a part textured by SIB and made it the taskbar texture on Open Shell. If the taskbar gets mangled for any reason restart File Explorer on Task Manager. Start buttons are an edited version of this, with added space to the right since it overlapped my taskbar items.

Firefox theme: Rinfox only works for Firefox 115/115ESR. Installation guide is in the "rinfox" folder. Extra info. Reshacker directions were in 2 different places so I'll put it all below (RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR):

1. Download MediaHuman from here:

2: open YouTube and find what video you want.

3: copy video link

4: click the paste link plus icon in media human

5: right click to edit tags

6: Click the video image on media human to change album picture

7: click the download arrow

8: click the dusting icon to remove it from queue when done.

9: open files

10: open windows legacy player

11: drag files to windows legacy player

12: drag album to burn side bar and place in order

12: alternatively put songs in order in the album

13: load blank CD

14: burn it

15: done

You can also make playlists in legacy player too!

Denki Kaminari likes to say the same phrase when he’s living his life out. 

“We’re gonna live forever!” 

And he says it with his chest, a warm grin spread across his face. Cheeks aching and red from the night wind, brushing across it like knuckles. It’s a half-lie, half-truth, half cheeky statement in regards to his dangerous job and even more dangerous lifestyle. He knows that all those things don’t make a whole, 3 halves - but that phrase is just as overzealous. 

The point is that he likes to say it whenever he’s having fun. Whether that be at his 21st birthday, sparklers flying out of his cake or in the middle of a drunken night - head stuck out of the window. He’s not sure why exactly. 

But he assumes he enjoys dancing with the implication that it’s possible. That, by living like this, there isn’t anything finite about existence and the he could, indeed, live as long as he wanted. Somehow, he’ll be broadly immortalized by his partying habits and missed connections and videos of him dancing with strangers at clubs. That these things will live on even farther than the legacy he was supposed to have by heroism. 

Denki Kaminari likes to think the idea of living forever is really just a way for him to say that he doesn’t have to think about the life he’s already living. The fact that he’s not unhappy but he’s not exactly where he likes to be. This hollowing incompleteness that rests on the apples of his cheeks and weighs down his smile. It doesn’t matter - this loneliness or sorrow. None of it matters if we have infinity. 

We’re gonna live forever right? So why try and think about the unimportant. There are bigger fish to fry. Bigger things to worry about. 

He isn’t.. sad. And he knows he shouldn’t be lonely. He has friends who care for him, and all the girls he could ever want, and he’s doing good! On the hero rankings, he broke 10 last week for the first time. He’s something of a bigshot now. He has media coverage. He has fans. He has the life he always dreamed of as a teenager - experiences all the cool shit he ever wanted. 

But he is, anyways. Lonely, that is. If he were more honest with himself than that’s really the only word to describe it. It’s a deep, unsettling loneliness. 

And he swore to himself that he was above most things. He would live out his dreams for the rest of his life and it would be awesome. Life would be so good He didn’t need to fall in love. Or if he did, it would be with some hot supermodel or whatever else. 

Lately, Denki finds that he really doesn’t want to live forever. 

The funny thing about love is that it brings you feelings that you didn’t even know existed. Like one day you’re completely fine but the next - you love someone so much life without them seems miserable. And there’s that weird, never ending fear that they might die. Then it’s 2am and you’re crying because you love them. Love them so much that you don’t really want to live forever but that you just don’t want them to die before you. That would make you so sad. 

And you’re not really the type of person Denki imagined himself with. You used to just be the lady on his patrol who sold Taiyaki on the corner with a pretty bandana on your head and a lovely smile. You sold other things, but he likes the Taiyaki the best. And despite how much shit you’ve seen on the corner, you never seem to leave it. You say you’re too attached to ever go, you’ve been there for four years of college and you’ll be devastated when you leave someday. 

And it’s funny because he’s not sure the two of you could be more different. You’re the type of person who others love - you have that tenderness to you. Soft hands and warm eyes. Everything about you is beautiful in the same way that renaissance paintings are. That kind, dreaminess that makes his stomach feel tight. 

He really didn’t mean to fall in love with you. It just sorta happened on his part. One late patrol became many, became talking to you for hours and hours on mundane days, became asking about your life. Where do you go to school? What do you do? Hows your relationship with your parents? Do you like coffee or tea or maybe neither? And hey, are you seeing anyone lately? 

Would you like too?

Denki Kaminari didn’t really ever intend to be a settled man.

But then he met you and the the idea of you having kids or marrying anyone other than him was so upsetting - he cries over it drunk. He met you and suddenly, he thinks that you might like some flowers he bought. He daydreams about holding your pinky and walking with you. Pictures living with you in an apartment - somewhere in the city. He’d take you out on the town to eat pizza and play at the arcade and then you could make out in the park.

You always listen to him. He didn’t know he wasn’t being heard until he met you. And you sat there and listened to him talk about his favorite video games for hours and hours - the classics, the lore, the fan-theories. You kissed him when he apologized for talking so much, promised you didn’t mind. These days, if he goes off on a tangent - your smile makes your eyes crinkle in the corner and your lips turn up in a smile. You encourage him to talk as much as he likes, hold his hand and squeeze it whenever he thinks he’s being too much. 

Denki didn’t know he spent so much of his life hiding. It’s scary, he has to admit. He thinks maybe you’re the only person who’s ever seen him. Not as the funny guy, or the partier, or the hero, or the side-character - he’s just Denki. You don’t lose interested in him when people like Kirishima and Bakugou are around. When someone asks who you’re dating - you hold his arm and say his name. 

Not Chargebolt but “oh! this is my boyfriend, Denki”. You smile and nudge his side. And no matter how much he hates himself somedays - you love him, always. With open arms and an unlocked door to your apartment - where you’re cooking dinner in the kitchen wearing cute socks. You’re the girlfriend he dreamed of in highschool - the one that wears anime merch and joins him in new things and holds onto him when she’s scared. 

The one he didn’t think he could have, no matter how much he wanted it. You’re a dream that he’s living. A living, breathing dream. 

The first Denki laid in bed with you - he didn’t remember much about the sex other than the fact it was good. It was so good he cried afterwards. He sobbed into your arms and you stroked his back, ran your hands over your shoulders and kisses his head. He doesn’t remember the sex itself, not really - but he remember the way the sunlight hit your skin when morning came. He spent the whole night looking at you, would you believe it? And it was nice. It was good. 

It’s so good being loved by you that Deki no longer wants to live forever. Needs too. 

Which is funny right - because you’d think the alternative would be for the two of you to be together forever. Instead of just him, you could spend eternity together latched to each others sides. 

It sounds nice in theory. It’d be nice if the two of you could stay together until time ends, and even if you left - he’s sure he’d spend eternity chasing you again. 

But he loves you so much that he doesn’t want to live forever. There would be so much he’d miss if that were the case. He wouldn’t be able to grow old with you like he wants, and if you had kids - what if they passed before you. Or even if you didn’t, you’d outlive all your friends. You would be able to see the whole world but then you’d run out of things together. 

Infinity is better in theory than in practice. He doesn’t want to live for forever because he knows he can’t. He doesn’t need to do something so.. impractical to be happy. 

Being with you, just for one lifetime, is enough to make him happier than he could ever dream. 

When Denki wakes up with you in his bed tomorrow morning - he knows in that moment that this is all he could ever need.

ABSOLUTELY I CAN!! lets go through these questions one by one

1. are you a canucks fan?

WHAT a question. am i a canucks fan? am i? like, yes, but no, but obviously, but i wish i wasn’t, but i will never quit them. the thing about being part of a hockey family in canada is that you don’t really get a choice about being a fan of your Team, and also no one really considers themselves fans per se. if you are a part of a hockey family, watching hockey is something that is embedded in your blood and your rituals and the legacy of your forefathers... but i feel in a very different way then i’ve seen in american football families or etc?

i don’t know, maybe i’m wrong, but being part of a hockey family is really about solemnly, often miserably, sometimes joyously, watching hockey Together. it’s about false nationalism and having no collective identity as canadians and therefore constructing one around hockey customs and rituals and superstitions and rivalries. at least in my experience, it’s not at all about like... masculinity, or anger, or even really competitiveness. you don’t get mad when your team loses - you grit your teeth and you bear it and you talk about how the coach should be fired and you patiently wait until your team gets good again. and if you haven’t suffered - if your team has not been Terribly, Devastatingly Bad, if you have not Earned It, then you should not win and everyone hates you (hence why no one likes the vegas golden knights).

anyways, if being a fan means knowing everything about a team and feeling passionately when they win and feeling grateful that they give you something to talk about with your dad then yes i am a canucks fan!!!

2. what’s the deal with their history/narrative?

for this bit it is important to keep in mind the Big Hockey Thing i mentioned above, which is that all teams/fans must suffer, and only through suffering can you earn victory. this probably indicates something fucked up about us but that’s another conversation!

so here’s a quick breakdown of the past 10 years of canucks history:

in 2011, the canucks had assembled a Perfect Team. our stars were the sedins, a pair of extremely talented swedish redhead twins who were acquired through some trading magic. we had alex burrows, a talented french-canadian trash talker, ryan kesler, a talented asshole, chris higgins & mason raymond, two talented hot men, and several star defencemen. and in net, roberto luongo, who was a GREAT goalie but would get into his head and absolutely fall apart at a moment’s notice. this Perfect Team dramatically beat our Nemisis the chicago blackhawks in the first round and made it to the stanley cup finals for the first time since 1994... only to come face to face with the boston bruins. the bruins were a huge, mean team, and they beat the canucks to a pulp every game. the entire city was losing it. we were so close to the cup, so close!!! and nothing else matters but that cup!!! and then - game seven - as close as you could possibly be - luongo has a complete breakdown and the bruins win 4-0. every goal worse than the last. the city riots! it was really really bad! all of the grinning and bearing it went out the window. people were devastated.

but the canucks were still good! right! right? well, they were good enough to win the presidents trophy the next season (prize for most regular season wins, no one cares about it) but not good enough to avoid losing the first round in 5 games. and then getting swept the next year. and then not even making the playoff the year after that. the glory days were over.

and then... well. longtime coach alain vigneault gets the chop, and in his place, the canucks decide to hire john tortorella, a man noted for being.... um.... an abusive asshole!! his habits included: incessantly berating his players, both to their faces and to the media. getting into physical fights with other coaches. basing his coaching approach around punishment and cruelty. etc etc etc. he decides he hates roberto luongo (who had already been the victim of several years of vitriol from the entirety of vancouver media). in the 2014 heritage classic, he chooses to start the backup goalie eddie lack - two days later, luongo is traded.

and that’s that. the sedins retire. the playoffs wither into a far off pipe dream. the team cycles through a couple more coaches and management teams, and continues to resist a full rebuild. several prospects who are supposed to revitalize the team end up fading away.

and then! whats that on the horizon! in the 2017 draft, the canucks choose elias pettersson as their fifth overall pick. just a little boy from sweden (continuing the canucks longtime love affair with swedish players) who rocked the world of the U20 SHL with one of the greatest seasons in the history of the league. he’s skinny and tall and sweethearted, and his debut is thrilling. all of a sudden, the canucks are fun to watch again. they have energy! they have speed! they have nifty passes!

the team, which seemed so listless before, lights up around him. bo horvat is the new captain, a boyish but Very Serious little leader. brock boeser is the american hotshot with the prince charming hair and a great shot. jacob markstrom is the new goalie anchoring the team - one of the players the canucks got out of the luongo trade who developed into a MUCH better goalie than anyone thought he would!! and now, a new baby rookie, little quinn hughes, who despite his talent moves through the world with an expression of constant existential horror.

somehow, suddenly, the pieces fall into place!! the team is... fun?!! they hold the leads that they used to inevitably give up! they score the goals that used to miss! they WON A PLAYOFF SERIES!!

beyond pettersson, there is just a LOVE that these boys all share with each other!! i think that they all feel acutely the responsibility of all the history above. they just won the first playoff series in like TEN YEARS and they feel the weight of that on their shoulders. but also they’re doing it!! they are the team we’ve been waiting for and they know it and they are so happy to be doing this together!! and the fact that they all share both that responsibility and that pride... ohhh i love it. i love that they probably have so much anxiety right now that must be soothed. i love that they must just all be so grateful for the prodigal son. i love all of it!!

Shea B. Hey man, I just wanted to say, cool site. It's been almost 15 years since my buddy Jeremy took his own life. I still think of him. I found this site and thought i would say hello. I have awesome pictures of Jeremy and I. I played soccer with him from the time we were 5 - 11 years old. We were friends at Gaston Middle School and Bryan Adams High School. If you want to really know about who Jeremy was, talk to me. But from what I read on your site things seems to be quite accurate. Jeremy was a harmless yet lost teenage kid that could have done anything he desired if it wasn't for his home life and pressure of being cool in a new high school. I actually had a crush on him but he was too into his madness to notice. A few days before he took his life, he called our friend Rachel and told her he was going away and would not be back. He was saying goodbye. I found this out just a few months ago. Jeremy would have rather have been dead than to feel anymore pain he hid so well. Thank you for remembering my Jeremy. He would be thrilled to know his legacy still goes on today each time his SONG is played. Always took my cigs too. Miss you "silly boy" and I am still older.

Well let me see, I was not aware he had a girlfriend at the time. Jeremy had a kind heart, he really did. Not very many people got close enough to see that. He hid behind a very dark yet macho cloud. Yet he was the most timid person I ever met. He had the most beautiful eyes too. They were very sad eyes like mine were. He and I would smoke together and he always took my cigarettes (I am going on 3 years now that I quit for good). I can't for the life of me remember the class we had together but I remember passing notes back and forth. I have my yearbook somewhere packed away. His mom basically abandoned him and his dad was no Saint either. In fact he was too wrapped up into his new wife to notice what was going on with Jeremy. I remember telling him about my horrible life and vice versa. Some of the things I must take with me as I promised to never say anything and I keep that promise even 16 years later! I was born on February 9th 1975 and he was born on February 10th 1975. So I am the oldest! I used to joke with him on that. One day I came to class and he was gone. They took him away to a mental hospital. I kept thinking thank god! He's going to get the help he needs. But I never thought for once he was suicidal! I never saw him again. :( So there it was and I met my horrible ex and he did not even let me go to Jeremy's funeral. He was that jealous. Lost many of our friends a few more to suicide, a couple to car accidents, one was killed by her jealous boyfriend, one was shot at Blockbuster in cold blood and I think one drowned. My on again off again boyfriend (also a HS sweetheart) Chris grew up with Jeremy and he never liked Jeremy always called him a Punk. If he only knew why he acted like such a Punk. Chris was very angry at Jeremy for taking his life and still to this day will not talk to me about it. So much of your article is right on the money and you have great sources. I was astounded when I learned of the Jeremy song by a band I did not even like. I played it over and over and can sing lyric by lyric to anyone. In fact it is on my work Windows Media Player. He went to live with his dad after he got out of the hospital (should have kept him longer) and I believe that is where he lost it. He lost the drive to live. He did not want anymore pain. He would purse up his lips when he was deeply saddened. In fact most pictures I remember and memories I remember have him pursing his lips up. I kept thinking no not Jeremy. Not Jeremy. Our other friend named Jeremy told me and I was like no you are lying, but he wasn't. It was not a lie. Jeremy really is gone. He's no longer suffering. Yea I really do think he would have been a little cocky at the fact he is world-known and has a popular band's song based and named after him. He loved that Rock type music where I was more into what else-pop. If I saw him today I would probably smack him and say Why leave us like that! As far as doing it in front of his class. I think maybe he wanted to leave a statement behind. Wished I knew what that was. I tried to contact his dad and he will not talk to anyone about it all. If we only knew what was written in his suicide note we'd have the answers. I hope I was able to share some of my times with Jeremy with you. His website and hard work were an important source of inspiration for every person who decided to get to know Jeremy after him. Sadly, following his death in early 2020, his website domain expired. I have therefore decided to preserve part of Ssheps' work by re-posting it on my blog. Striking and shipping 35mm prints was expensive, as was paying qualified projectionists, and said prints would get beat up; the longer you waited to see a film, odds were the worse it would look. And “qualified” projectionists certainly weren’t the baseline standard by any means: I remember going to see Talk to Her improperly projected in 2002, the frame misaligned so that the bottom of the frame showed as a sliver at the top from start to finish. (Here’s a much more dramatic projection fail story from back in the day; probably everyone has at least one.) As with any new tech rollout, unforeseen problems followed: smaller theaters crowdsourced funds for new projectors or risked going out of business, digital files proved anything but foolproof in practice, a push for digital archiving placed the history of film at risk as new storage formats proved highly unstable relative to well-preserved film. (This last sentence is a heavily compressed version of what David Bordwell tracked at length in his highly recommended “Pandora’s Digital Box” series.) More succinctly, this is the first time 3D introduced a specific ghost in the machine: every time you go to a multiplex to see a movie that looks way too dark, the odds are good someone left the 3D lens on, and no one’s around who can fix it or who would even care to. What started as an attempt to perfect 3D had the inadvertent effect of undoing 2D digital projection standards.

Again, none of this is directly James Cameron’s fault. He’s just the one who helped push through a change faster than it might have been implemented otherwise. He had spent most of the 80's recording relatively few albums: the superb Off The Top (Elektra/Musician, 1982) Keep On Comin' (Elektra/Musician, 1983) the one off return to Blue Note Go For Whatcha Know (Blue Note, 1986) and Sum Serious Blues (Milestone, 1989).  Off The Top was, by far, his best recording of the 80's with an all star cast including Stanley Turrentine, George Benson and Grady Tate, with the rest being spotty, Go For Whatcha Know being good, but with far too short tune lengths running between four and seven minutes.  Easily the best performance is Grady Tate's vocal version of Michael Jackson's hit “She's Out of My Life” heard on Off The Wall (Epic, 1979).  The 90's would begin with the excellent live Fourmost (Milestone, 1991) and then the bluesy Prime Time (Milestone, 1991).  Smith's prowess at the organ remained nothing short of stunning, clearly deserving of the incredible moniker that graced his early albums, but he was being overshadowed by the young phenom Joey DeFrancesco who was hailed in the jazz media as bringing back the Hammond organ from the doldrums, and while Jack McDuff, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jimmy McGriff had all made solid recent recordings returning to the B-3, Smith and DeFrancesco remained it's most visible players at the time.  Smith's quartet of tenor and soprano saxophonist Herman Riley, guitarists Terry Evans, Phil Upchurch or Carl Lockett and drummers Frank Wilson or Jimmy “Junebug” Jackson helped keep the grease flowing in Smith's blues soaked brand of playing, but he was always best when playing with groups that included Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell or Grady Tate because they'd truly inspire him.  As fine as Smith's quartet was, he'd often go into autopilot heavily falling on heavily cliched phrases, trills and drone patterns-- with Turrentine or Burrell on board, he'd push just a little harder really enjoying the moment.

On Christmas eve and day of 1993 in Osaka, Japan at Kirin Plaza Osaka Smith would be taped in a trio with Kenny Burrell, and drummer Jimmie Smith (no relation).  The newcomer to this trio was drummer Smith, a Newark, New Jersey native and cousin of Larry Young who had recorded with Young, Jimmy McGriff and Richard “Groove” Holmes, but never the modern innovator of the organ, Jimmy Smith.  The drummer is perhaps best known for his role as house drummer for Norman Granz' roster of artists he taped for his Pablo label at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977, and his tasteful playing serves as a buffer for the organist's red hot soloing and Burrell's calm guitar.  Two albums were released in Japan and later licensed by Blue Note first, The Master (Blue Note/Somethin' Else, 1993) and The Master II (Blue Note/Somethin' Else) not hitting American shores until 1996.  With 15 selections spread across two CD's, they demonstrate the beautiful empathy the organist and guitarist  developed since their first meeting during three days of sessions in February, 1957.  The track list serves as kind of Jimmy Smith's greatest hits with a number of tracks that he had not revisited since his Blue Note recordings some thirty years earlier.  Smith is limber on Burrell's “Chitlins Con Carne” which he had never recorded, with the guitarist providing a few smooth choruses before Smith opens up with his trademark enthusiasm ripping blazing fast lines as if it's nothing. He squabbles on the set piece “It's Alright With Me” by Cole Porter, radically different from the arrangement found on At The Club Baby Grand, Volume 1 (Blue Note, 1956) with steady support from Burrell's  quarter notes and drummer Smith's velvety brushes.  The trio revisits Horace Silver's “The Preacher” which the organist cut on his very first album A New Sound, A New Star (Blue Note, 1956) and reprised in a barnstorming, definitive version on At The Club Baby Grand, Volume 1.  Here things are at a much lower boil as Burrell is featured in an unhurried solo.  Smith substitutes the grandiose congregation stirring full organ drone patterns of the Baby Grand take with a more measured funky lope.  The most memorable track on the first installment is a 7 and a half minute slow burn on Burrell's “All Day Long” first heard on At The Organ, Volume 1 (Blue Note, 1957)  Smith plays his  12 bar walking bass line faithfully from the original before guitar and drums.  Compared to Art Blakey's shuffle that got Smith to really dig in with some heated choruses.  Drummer Smith's feel is considerably more relaxed and behind the beat which makes the organist and guitarist make similarly more leisurely choices, even during the drummer's double time, chopped up during Smith's solo with rim shots.  Heavy swinging takes on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and “Back At the Chicken Shack” are highlights as well.

The Master II opens with a greasy, lazy music for a Sunday afternoon take on “Summertime”, but this volume is really all about how Jimmy Smith treats the ballads and blues.  By far the best moments occur with full organ treatments of “Laura” and “My Romance”, where Smith displays total control of the organ with a wide range of tone colors and Leslie speaker settings, surrendering to the depth of melodies.  Similarly, Thad Jones “A Child Is Born” is treated with the melody in mind.  Burrell takes a lovely solo showcasing his strong lyrical affinity, and Smith's solo raises the temperature with rushed intensity: spirals of tumbling, sprawling double timed lines.  He again squabbles on a sauntering “Mack The Knife” and brings things to a heated close with a rollicking “Stormy Monday” with organ at all stops out for a dramatic ending.  Critical reception for these albums was mixed with Scott Yanow giving a typically shallow  three star review for All Music Guide, and for the second volume, Sid Gribetz giving a bizarre lukewarm response for Jazz Times.  

These albums are much, much better than that, they show Jimmy Smith's organ playing at it's peak, inspired by the invention of his choice guitarist and old friend Kenny Burrell.  These would be unfortunately, the last trio albums of Smith's career, where less than a year later he'd be back at Verve, with the classic Angel Eyes being his last truly great album until Legacy (Concord Jazz, 2005) with Joey DeFrancesco, the final session before the organist's passing just weeks before it's release.  It would have been very interesting had original Smith drummer Donald Bailey been a part of this trio; his off kilter comping and imaginative ideas would have truly added something very special to these clearly fun gigs. It could have been that since Jimmie Smith is a resident of Japan, he was hired for these gigs, and Jimmy Smith's recollections in an AllAboutJazz article indicate the drummer took some time to warm up to playing with the organist.  Jimmy was always very specific on how drummers played with him, and it is very possible drummer Smith had never played with an organist as aggressive.  Larry Young was pretty aggressive on albums like Of Love and Peace (Blue Note, 1969) but quite laid back on Testifying (New Jazz 1960) his first recording for Prestige subsidiary New Jazz that featured Jimmie Smith on drums.

Sound

Both Master sets are recorded beautifully.  There is lots of room tone, and the B-3 is full bodied with warm mid range and window rattling bass from the the foot pedals.  All details are heard, tone wheel leakage, and key click, with slightly shimmering highs, and the slow chorale setting of the Leslie filling the sound stage in stereo, behind it all is Smith's signature humming and grunting, omnipresent.  Guitar is rich, with the clear attack of the pick on strings, drums, snare, and toms appropriately thwack, with beautiful smoky ring on cymbals, and a sharp sour ping of the swish cymbal in Jimmie Smith's drum set up really enhanced wonderfully on Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones.  

The original Blue Note issues can be found fairly inexpensively second hand on discogs or eBay and at dustygroove.com, though the recent Somethin' Else reissue of the first album from a few years back is slightly more pricy.  I have had both Blue Note editions of the albums since their release more than 20 years ago and paid regular price.
